WHAT LEAH D. SAYS & HOW SHE UTILIZES OUR SERVICES: Where speed & service meet! Ask my husband; I’m an eager customer for phone orders. But after trialing a number of services, Kosher by Phone surprised me with the fastest delivery I’ve ever seen. And lately it seems like they added another vehicle on the road, so it now takes only an average of 2 hours and 15 minutes from when I call in with my order until they deliver it to my door. Amazing!

YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE! There is a prison not far from Monsey that houses several female prisoners that are Jewish. The walls of Bedford Hills Correctional Facility witnesses the pain of these women 365 days a year. The women are cold in the winter, and hungry- oh so hungry! For those that keep kosher, the hunger follows them at every turn. But even more than the hunger for food, is the hunger for a visitor. Many of these women see only the prison walls day in and day out. Volunteers from Monsey and Mt. Kisco infuse life

into these women, but the volunteers are few and far between. If you feel that you could bring new light into the life of these women, either by sending warm items of clothing, food to supplement their meager kosher diet, or by visiting them- please contact Chanie Lederer 845-426-1463. Even simple items like soap, shampoo, sneakers, or a letter mean so much to these women. You can make a difference!

MILES FOR LIFE I would like to thank The Monsey View for featuring an article about the amazing organization, Kanfei Chayim. Reading about them back then, I did not know how much I'll benefit from this special organization. Unfortunately, my little Yossi, suffering from a severe heart condition, had to get to Columbus, Ohio for open-heart surgery. I didn't see how it would be possible to swing it financially. Thinking of solutions,I recalled the article I had read, and called The

Monsey View for Kanfei Chayim’s telephone number. I'm speechless................. Like a travel agency, they took care of every little detail and magically sweetened this bitter time, saving me hundreds of dollars which I would never be able to pay myself. At this occasion, I would like to thank the donors who sponsored my tickets, through donating miles to this special organization. Thank you! you saved my son’s life! Sury Fekete

A CHATZOS PARTNER EXPERIENCE.

YESHUOS

I tried begging. I tried threats. I tried tears. But our daughter was too far gone for anything to make a difference.

EVERY MIDNIGHT the distinguished talmidei chachomim of Kollel Chatzos gather in locations across the globe.

Weeks would pass and we wouldn’t hear from her. Then she would suddenly show up inappropriately dressed, bringing grief and shame with her arrival.

During the darkest hours, when the rest of the world sleeps, they immerse themselves in vibrant Torah learning, bringing zechusim and yeshuos to klal yisroel.

My son’s bar mitzvah was coming up, but instead of focusing on the nachas, I was agonizing about my daughter. A family simcha without her? Unthinkable! My daughter parading around in highly offensive clothing at the bar mitzvah? Double unthinkable. Whether she would or wouldn’t show up, she would manage to ruin this simcha – the way she managed to ruin almost everything.

I thought she would skip it, but my daughter showed up to shul and my pulse skyrocketed. Then I registered the way she looked, and grew faint. My daughter was dressed tzniusdig! It was the first time in two years that she entered a shul or wore modest clothing.

YOU CAN BE EMOTIONALLY HEALTHY AT ANY WEIGHT! I feel that the Weighsmarter column has a lot of substance, and I enjoy Esty Weiss’s novel and refreshing approach to weight loss and to life in general. I was a bit disappointed, though, by the premise of last week’s article, “How is your weight related to your emotional wellbeing?” Perhaps it was simply a poor choice of wording, but the opening rubbed me the wrong way. Although yes, I do believe that eating and emotions oftentimes go handin-hand, to posit that most

heavyset people are generally that way because of a lack of self-esteem is detrimental! I for one, being rather heavy, can speak from experience. As a teenager I suffered from severely low self-esteem due to a detrimental life situation, and turned to not eating food as a coping mechanism. Now that I am in a much healthier place and have confidence in who I am, ironically, I am heavy. Most of the time I find that my eating unhealthy items is simply due to the lack of options (because of a health condition) and lack of time due to a myriad of obligations. I would LOVE to eat healthier if I could manage it. I actually

YOURVOICE KEEP THE MONSEY VIEW, THE “MONSEY VIEW” I usually don’t write letters to the editor, but now I feel I have to put pen to paper. And if I’m already writing, I have to first applaud your beautiful magazine! It is professionally written and designed, the topics intriguing, and I am really enjoying the special columns that do not appear elsewhere, such as business, real estate, and excursions. The health and educational columns are excellent, well-

22

/ THE MO NS E Y V IE W

written, clear, and down-toearth. The serial is beautiful and heartwarming! The recipes, too, are doable and practical- finally, things I can actually make for my own family! The crafts, Boggle, and art round it out, making it a magazine for the whole family. I especially love the fact that it is written only for Monseyites; the issues we have are made into a conversation through letters, interviews, polls, and

prefer fruits and vegetables over carbohydrates - but the pre-packaged foods are simply more convenient in this hectic life. Being “jolly” has very little to do with one’s eating; it has to do with the inner work one has performed on maintaining a positive self image. There are plenty of “fat people” out there that feel great with themselves as human beings, but would simply like to lose the extra pounds that snuck on because of external causes. Please don’t spread the myth perpetrated by the American mentality that overweight people are emotional wrecks! -A peeved and pudgy reader

more- hopefully uniting us and helping us to continue making Monsey into a beautiful place to live! After all that, I come now to the prompt for my writing. The past issue had an important and informative interview with our wonderful Town Supervisor, raising awareness in time for the critical elections coming up. However, I was shocked at the big picture on the front screaming out from the newsstands, on my kitchen table, in the streets! Although we will show our gratitude by going out to vote, we still do not want to bring such a cover into our homes. The Monsey View Continued on page 24

RE: A LIFE AND DEATH MATTER (ISSUE #21) Thank you for publishing the most amazing letter about allergies. Three out of my five children are allergic and it gave me a better understanding as to what they're going through when they have a reaction. I hope your readers will take it seriously and make some changes, so our children can

live in a safer world. I'd also like to point out that some supermarkets display their peanuts in an open container at kids height. Please, please be considerate and make some changes. Thanks again for a great article. Reizy Schwartz

Just a quick reply to the person who feels that saving lives by being careful with allergens is overdone: If you had ever watched Hatzala working to save the life of a small child quickly slipping away due to an allergic incident, you would never say those words! You can only look so coldly on because it's not YOU or YOUR children... and may it never be! Also, due to the prevalence and common severity of reactions to those specific foods, I mentioned only a very short list of highly lethal foods. It shouldn't be too hard to avoid those few in public! Thank you, The original letter writer

BECOMINGWEIGHSMARTER How Can Neurotransmitters Make a Difference in Your Weight?

When was the last time you craved celery sticks? How about feeling that urge to indulge on a chicken bottom? Wouldn’t you rather go for ice cream, cake, cookies, challah, chocolate and potato kugel? There actually is a very valid reason behind these cravings. You see, in your brain are something called neurotransmitters. They act as a chemical messenger relaying information within the brain, and the strength or weakness of each neurotransmitter plays an important role in your ability to "stop overeating." The four key neurotransmitters are dopamine, serotonin, GABA, and endorphins. Let’s learn a little bit about each one.

DOPAMINE:

This is the overall “feel

good” chemical. Low levels of dopamine can lead to a lack of motivation, fatigue, mood swings, and memory-loss. The following can help boost dopamine levels naturally.

• • • • • • • • •

All animal products Almonds Avocado Dark chocolate Green leafy vegetables Seeds Yogurt Physical activity EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique)

SEROTONIN:

This is considered to be the “happy/anti-worry/ flexibility” chemical. When you’re low on serotonin you may feel worried, rigid,

oppositional, and it affects your sleep, mood, and appetite. When you indulge in high-carbohydrate foods, they temporarily comfort and relax you because they increase serotonin levels for very short time. The comfort lasts but a few momentsbut the weight can last for a very long time! Try these natural methods for boosting serotonin levels quickly, instead of demolishing a brownie cake.

• Dark chocolate that is

at least 72% and higher in cocoa.

• A very effective

supplement called 5-HTP works great. (Check with your Doctor if you are currently taking any anti-depressants before adding 5-HTP)

• Inositol • Getting a good night’s sleep of at least 6-8 hours

• Physical activity • EFT (Emotional

Freedom Technique)

GABA:

This neurotransmitter is known to calm and relax the brain. Your levels of GABA may be depleted if you’re under a lot of stress or have experienced trauma. Having low levels of GABA can make you feel anxious, uptight, and

sad. Here are some tips to raise your GABA levels.

• Vitamin B-6 • An amino

acid supplement called “GABA”

• Magnesium • Physical activity • EFT (Emotional

ENDORPHINS:

ARE YOU DESPERATE TO DROP WEIGHT AND INCHES???

Endorphins are the brain’s own pleasure and painkilling chemicals. They are heavily involved in food addiction, and in any form of loss of control. You can produce endorphins by:

WHEN DID YOUR PARENTS COME TO FOUNTAIN VIEW? Our father was 95 and our mother was 92. Most of their married life they lived in Washington, and then moved to Baltimore where they resided for nine years. At that point, it was clear that they needed additional help, and it was decided to have our parents move to a senior facility. WHY FOUNTAIN VIEW? After visiting several possibilities in the New York area, we realized that Fountain View was our number one choice. Walking into Fountain View is like entering a five-star hotel. It’s exceptionally well kept; the grounds are truly magnificent; and the pool is a wonderful recent addition. But more importantly are the

people who make Fountain View work. The personnel – from the executive director to the maintenance crew – are gems. They try and accommodate everyone’s needs and treat everyone with dignity and respect. Our parents worked hard their whole lives and we were happy that Fountain View offered them such a comfortable and heimishe life in their later years. SO IT WAS A PERFECT FIT FROM THE BEGINNING. Our parents came on a trial basis. As with everything in life, some adjustments were necessary. But stay they did – one of the best decisions they could have made. In particular, our father was ecstatic that there is a shul on the premises and enjoyed the warm prayer services with a minyan three times a day, all made possible by Rabbi Seplowitz, a wonderful Rabbi who is a caring, thoughtful and concerned individual. Another point of appreciation for our parents was the warmth and care in the dining room. For seniors, meals are a very social event. The meals are delicious and beautifully presented, and are an example of Fountain View’s respect for its residents. Our father was impressed that, rather than having to eat the Shabbos or Yom Tov night meal according to the specific dinner schedule, he was able to have a full Shabbos seudah after davening. That is what he always did, and was initially afraid he would have to give up this pattern of his life. He

he had attended every minyan at the to the Fountain View shul. The night before, his granddaughter and great grandson had visited him to perform bedikas chometz. We know he had a special bracha from Hashem.

HOW DID YOUR FAMILY DYNAMICS PLAY OUT? With our parents together, we functioned as a unit. Our mother and our father loved the gorgeous grounds, often spending 2-3 hours a day outdoors. We visited regularly and were thankful to witness how, despite our mother’s waning strength, she was treated with endless respect – never as a burden. Until today I visit Fountain View from time to time to look in on those residents I got to know.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO DONATE A SEFER TORAH IN YOUR PARENTS’ MEMORY? They were very active in Washington’s Jewish community; they helped build the yeshivah there. Our father led a group known as the “minyanaires”. Every Sunday morning he would teach bar mitzvah-age boys to daven and lein. He would encourage them to wear tzitzis, eat breakfast

At Fountain View “Shabbos is Shabbos and Yom Tov is Yom Tov."

HOW MANY YEARS DID YOUR FATHER ENJOY AT FOUNTAIN VIEW? A little over 4 ½ years, with a brief break following a stroke. Everyone was overjoyed when he returned to Fountain View from rehab, but none happier than our father himself to be “back home.” Our father passed away with the love of Hashem on Erev Pesach, 2015, halfway through his 101st year. The day before

with them, and they would spend quality time together. We keep getting emails from people saying they are frum today in his merit. A Sefer Torah seemed the most fitting way to immortalize the memory of our mother and our father. Neither of them was ostentatious and always valued what was truly important. Now it is befitting to commemorate their lives with the joy and simcha and love of Torah.

WITH YOU IN QUEENS AND YOUR BROTHERS IN BALTIMORE AND LAWRENCE, WHY THE DONATION TO FOUNTAIN VIEW? We feel tremendous hakaras hatov to Fountain View. For almost five years, this community cared for our parents. Whenever we headed back home after a visit, we knew deep in our hearts that we had made the best choice and that we were leaving them in the best possible hands. As an aside, I think you would appreciate this story: Last year for the first and last days of Succos, my husband and I stayed at Fountain View. My brothers and I and our spouses oftentimes spent Shabbos or Yom Tov with our father, staying in Fountain View’s lovely S h a b b o s apartments and being able to share Shabbos and Yom Tov meals with our father. But last year our father was in the hospital and with gentle prodding the doctors agreed to discharge him on Simchas Torah if he was well enough.

B’reishis in his hands and could not even give it to the Rabbi, as the Rabbi had Choson Torah. Suddenly, my husband saw our father’s aide pulling up right outside the window. Our father had been discharged and was returning home. They were just about to start leining B’reishis, so my husband quickly told the Rabbi to wait. A man of timeless etiquette, our father was hesitant to enter the shul without his suit or his hat. But accompanied by Fountain View’s amazing Rabbi, my husband wheeled my father right in up to the bimah and he was honored with the aliyah of choson B’Reishis. What timing!

Whenever we headed back home after a visit, we knew deep in our hearts that we had made the best choice.

Spending Simchas Torah at Fountain View was a wonderful experience – full of life with amazing hakafos. Anyhow, during the day my husband had bought choson B’reishis to give to a gentlemen who regularly davened at Fountain View to help make a minyan. However, this man did not return after Shacharis and my husband had choson

AND NOW THE COMMUNITY WILL HAVE A NEW SEFER TORAH BY WHICH TO REMEMBER BOTH YOUR MOTHER AND FATHER. Absolutely! A magnificent Hachnosas Sefer Torah is planned, which coincides with the day after our father’s Hebrew birthday. Fountain View should definitely be a first choice for retirees seeking a retirement community, with a beautiful new Sefer Torah dedicated to the memory of our parents to greet them as they enter.

BONEI OLAM ANNUAL CHINESE AUCTION I arrived at the mailbox a minute after Sara Rochel. My ever exuberant neighbor was tearing open a pink envelope and peeking in to see what surprise it held. A birthday party invitation for her daughter, she informed me. The next envelope in the pile had the information emblazoned on the outside: Time for a visit! Her pediatrician was coaxing her to schedule an appointment. But it was the last envelope, in muted pink and blue, that stole my heart. The faintest of colors, the daintiest of apparel, the new season’s line was in at Jacadi.

oblong white envelopes it held.

It was the worst form of selfdestruction, yet I couldn’t help but study the contrast to my life.

My uneasiness by far outweighed my curiosity as I entered my apartment to peruse them.

My husband and I, we lack the erect stature, the ease that comes with being men of society.

Done with her scanning, Sara Rochel graciously stepped aside, juggling baby, purse and a stack of gaily colored envelopes between her teeth to give me the floor, and access to my mail.

Her family was photographed on the sprawling lawn of their new home. My eyes traveled from Leah, beaming at the camera, arms protectively wrapped around two of her daughters, to her husband, carrying himself proudly as master of the brood, to the array of kinderlach, their

The top envelope, more elegant than the other two, was the only one which looked like it might hold anything of interest. I tore it open to reveal the invitation to Leah’s Chanukas HaBayis. Leah and I went back a long way; our relationship strengthened through high school, shidduchim, and then marriage, and was one of the few to survive what followed.

Our hopes of a family have yet been unrealized; mercilessly snatched from our reach time and again over the years.

Once the money flow had trickled and then run dry, the doors had closed in our faces. Our down payment for the house we had hoped to buy is gone, sucked into the whirlpool of never-ending expenses incurred in our quest to have a family of our own. I lingered on the photo a bit longer, exploring the pain. I tried to place the deep abyss of pain aside, making a made a mental note to purchase a housewarming gift for the event, and tackled the next

$12,000 to join the effort of failure, more thousands to be added to the black hole where every last penny we had earned over the past decade had gone. Money: I had no idea where to take from, and how to pay off. Our doctor had been hopeful that a new advancement might lead to our deliverance. But it was out of the question. How would we pay for it? How could we think of feeding the black hole with more money money that we could ill-afford to borrow - when our financial situation was careening out of control? And this bill, the astronomical sum - coming on the heel of many similar ones - how would we cover it? The third envelope, I noted through a dizzy haze, was my credit card bill. I hadn’t the stamina to open it and be confronted by our dire financial straits. I

brooding over our options. There were none. Once the money flow had trickled and then run dry, the doors had closed in our faces. Mentally we were still armed, ready for battle. We were willing to invest energy and resources and continue to trudge down the obstaclestrewn path to parenthood. It wasn’t the failure that rankled in me and made me put my face in my hands in despair. It was the lack of funds. Some time later, my husband stepped into the door, my comrade - my partner in this battle. He looked at the dark kitchen that held no aroma of dinner, at me, sitting in an uncharacteristic melancholy stance at my table, at the pile of papers under my hands, and he understood.

He took on our case, referring us to a physician most suited for the specific issues we faced and working out a customized treatment plan for us. Bonei Olam did not rest and left no stone unturned in seeing to our deliverance. All of the expenses of this prohibitively costly venture were assumed by this amazing organization to whom we owe our sanity, to whom we owe our life, to whom we owe the priceless gift, the Heaven-sent bundle we now hold in our hands.

He sighed a deep sigh, and turned his eyes Heavenward, searching for words which we can anchor on. I know not how this difficult chapter of our lives would have turned out, how long our desperate cries would have gone unheard had we not been introduced to Bonei Olam. With care and dedication, the Bonei Olam staff took us under their wing. What a relief to relinquish the burden we had been carrying all on our own! Stone TWENTY TWO Chaya’s Story I’m poised, waiting. I know it’ll happen. I hope it will. Standing at the ready for a miracle to come through, yet knowing every day that today might not be the day. It’s in that stillness, that pause between what is and what can be, that strength either falters or grows. Chuna will be okay. That’s what they said. From their words, I can hear a promise and a doubt. I’m listening to the promise. And waiting. Every day, I bring broth. I can wet his lips with it. One day, he will turn to it. The aroma of salt and water and vegetables, a few chicken bones — all the good that this earth offers up — might tickle his senses. One day, he’ll stretch out his neck. He’ll part his lips. He’ll drink. Perhaps that’s why the Jewish nation is so strong, waiting for Moshiach. Every day, operating in the still, small place between what is, and what could be. Maybe he’ll be okay.

Recap: Dovid realizes that his Creator has been listening to him all along. And Rachamim might have a plan to help Malka’la get married.

In the silence, the normalcy is what has to change, seeds germinate and grow and penetrate through frozen ground. I am a good mother. This morning, the little ones all left the house with washed faces and clean clothes. I parted from them for the day with a kiss on their tender cheeks. Some of the pants will need patches, I noticed, because in

And now I’m here. Perhaps the hours of sitting here at Chuna’s bedside — just sitting and not running, patting his fingers, baby round fingers crawling into gnarly adult twigs, calling his name and murmuring Tehillim — might be what is quieting my insides. There is want in the house. The veneer of family is gone; in its place people come and offer charitable assistance. Chuna is here. He isn’t okay — yet. Amid all this, I’m feeling calm. Perhaps that’s why, when I come home, I can listen.

“Your wedding is almost,” I say. It’s as if I wake up from a dream with a jolt of cold water. the whirlwind of the store, I didn’t get to mend them. They each took along a moitzika of bread smeared with techina — bread which Duvid brought home last night- techina that miraculously materialized in the small chest under the kitchen counter, along with beans, split peas, and a sack of rice.

Isaac tells me he has no friends. That’s lonely. But I don’t pick up the double-edged spear of guilt and blame that I’ve thrust into my heart so many times. “Would you like to play kugelach with me?” I ask. He is eager. My bones are weary from a long day back and forth from the hospital, but I sit down. My bones feel

He’s getting big. “Yesterday, I dreamed a happy dream,” he says. “I didn’t dream about animals.” I tuck him in. We say Shema. Every day, we Yidden recite it. This is what real relationships are. Did I waste the bond of mother-daughter in the mundane of every day? “I asked Regina for cost-price fabrics. Look what I want to sew.” She holds up a shiny satin, and a soft green cotton. She wants to sew linen, she says. For her own home. “My wedding was supposed to be in a month,” she says. “We didn’t even—” She has said too much. Clamming up, she traces her fabrics nervously, busying herself with

My feet start tapping the ground and my jaws draw together, before I realized that sitting this way won’t heal Chuna… won’t marry off Malka’la. She needs a dirah. A wedding hall. A dress. She needs beds, a table with chairs and some pots. Money. Time. I look at her. Now that I look, I see that the girl bustling about, taking care of the children, the food, the store, is my child. disapproving scowl. She’s protecting it because she wants it. She’s looking to celebrate her life in the linens she has, the home she creates. She deserves it. She deserves more than I ever gave her. At least, she deserves it in her own new home. It’s hard for me to talk. I know what will emerge from my mouth- the first reaction of frustration and inadequacy and the jealousy of never having fargined myself to indulge, to smooth my hands

Here is Malka’la. She has emerged from the bedroom and is shadowing the kitchen table again, and I want to give her everything, to tell her I will… I keep looking at the edges of her eyes, now narrowed with worry. Inside of me, a storm of questions arise and rage. How will we do it? How can we even sew so many dresses, and linens, and tablecloths at once? How can we manage? We can’t. We must. How? At this pivotal time, Malka’la deserves a mother, not a question. Malka’la wants linen. Not just any linen. She wants fancy, stately. She wants to close her eyes in a bed that she likes, wake up in a nest that surrounds her with her own creativity and love of life. She’s afraid to say it to me. over luxury, to breath loud and deep. She is worthy of life. She is worthy because she came into life. If there’s one thing, only one gift, I can grant her as she embarks on the journey of womanhood, it is this. It is experiencing worthiness. I just don’t have it to give it away. In the awkward pause of wanting, of putting out her request and waiting for it to be acknowledged, to find reassurance that it’ll be fulfilled, Malka’la has moved away. I hear her shuffling in the bedroom. I want to give you. I can’t. You deserve… it all.

How? A list fills my head and then boils over like a simmering, hearty soup. Wedding hall. Drummer, singer, mesader kiddushin. Guests. Inviting guests. A seudah, kibbud, wine, sweet drinks. An apartment. Money for an apartment… in all the weeks and months and fears, we haven’t gotten any closer to the astronomical amount of an apartment. Dresses. Window dressing. The list goes on, and on, but here is Malka’la. She has emerged from the bedroom, and is shadowing the kitchen table again, and I want to give her everything, to tell her I will… And there’s no way I can lie like that. Because I don’t have it. When You Build Your Dream Home Build It On A Superior Foundation The Superior Advantage America's finest homes are being built on our foundations. Maybe it's because Superior Walls is the leader in residential precast foundation systems. Maybe it's because our high-strength concrete walls are created in a factory-controlled environment with built-in insulation. Or maybe homeowners just like warm, dry basements. INFORMATIONAL As you read this, there are approximately 61,000 people airborne over the United States. If you are from the lucky ones to have experienced air travel or are looking forward to having the experience- here are your air travel facts in a nutshell!

by Batsheva Honig

FAST

FACTS All international airline pilots speak English. The longest operating non-stop flight is a Delta flight between Johannesburg and Atlanta, at 17 hours. On a mission to save money, American Airlines was the first to stop providing pillows during flight. (They kept their blankets on all flights to keep passengers warm - which can be improvised as pillows.) Another attempt at money-saving took place in 1987, when AA saved $40,000 by removing one olive from each salad served in first class. Do you know that food tastes different while airborne? This is caused by the atmosphere in the cabin which dries out our noses and compromises our sense of smell, as well as the change in air pressure which numbs about a third of taste buds. The solution? Airlines generally add heavy amounts of salt and spice to dishes.

AIR TRAVEL IN HALACHA Traveling on a fast day poses unique shailos in halacha. According to nearly all poskim, eastbound travelers who don’t cross the dateline may end their fast when they encounter nightfall. There is however considerable dispute regarding westbound travelers, and one should consult his Rav for ruling prior to traveling. When a friend or relative is traveling, we traditionally give “shaliach mitzvah gelt,” (a coin or bill which they will give to Tzedaka upon safe arrival at their destination) because it says that “A shliach of a mitzvah will come to no harm.” Common practice is that one bentches gomel only on flights over an ocean, and according to some, from coast to coast. Reb Moshe Feinstein felt that any flight, while statistically safe, warrants the bracha haGomel. Consult your Rav for his ruling.

AIRPORTS AND AIRLINES AROUND THE WORLD • The world's largest airline in terms of fleet size is Delta Airlines (United States) with 809 aircraft in service, and having carried 129,433,000 passengers in the past year.

• The largest passenger plane is the Airbus 380 - nearly 240 feet long, almost 80 feet high, with standard seating capacity of 555 passengers.

The world's busiest airport in terms of passenger volume is Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport in Atlanta, Georgia. More than 96 million passengers shuffled through the Atlanta airport in 2014.

The busiest airport in terms of flight traffic is O’Hare International Airport in Chicago, Illinois, with 881,933 flights in 2014, and aircraft take-off and landings every 10 to 15 seconds on a given day.

• One of the weirdest airport amenities can be found in Sao Paulo/Guarulhos International Airport in Brazil. Travelers can head to Terminal 2 to visit an in-house dentist who offers cleaning, whitening, and other services - the last place I’d want to visit en route to vacation!

SAFETY MEASURES Are you scared to fly? Keep in mind that statistic wise, plane crashes kill one in eleven million passengers. Compared to the 1 in 5,000-risk of being killed in a car accident, you should feel safer in the skies! Additionally, much of airline protocol is focused on keeping you safe.

• Did you ever wonder how pilots manage the flight without shuteye? Actually, they probably get more rest than the average flyer! Flights longer than eight hours require three pilots on board to rotate flying duties, while flights longer than 12 hours require four pilots, who usually fly in 3-4 hour shifts.

• Each airplane pilot flying the aircraft eats a different meal to minimize the risk of all pilots on board being ill, or suffering from food poisoning. The main pilot usually gets the seniority perk of getting the first-class meal, while the copilot gets the business class one.

• Aircraft doors are designed to be fail-safe. Due to the pressure inside the plane cabin, even several strong human beings would not be able to open the door during flight.

MRS. H. Resides on: Secor Street Family: Eight children: one married and living in Boro Park, plus children of various ages

WELCOME NEIGHBOR WHAT MADE YOU MOVE? The biggest catalyst for our move was our special needs daughter. She was getting older, her needs were growing, and the support system we had when she was younger didn’t serve our needs anymore. Living in a small community meant the infrastructure she needed wasn’t available. Besides, New Jersey provides very little in the way of services.

The situation was becoming very taxing on the family, with my husband needing to drive her to school every day. We knew Monsey has much more available. The existence of Ohr V’Daas and other agencies providing for these children really was the deciding factor.

ARE YOU RENTING OR DID YOU PURCHASE? We were advised to rent for

Occupation: Mr. H. remained at his management job in Union City, while his wife accepted a job in her children’s school one year after moving. Previously resided in: A small city in New Jersey Years in Monsey: Two the first while, until we get to know Monsey and decide where we’d like to settle.

HOW DO YOU LIKE THE NEIGHBORHOOD? I, baruch Hashem, got everything I davened for, and I’m very grateful and happy. Our beis medrash is right next to us, and we have wonderful neighbors in a very heimish environment. My children fit right in, and there are lots of neighbors for my children to befriend.

WHAT’S THE MOST DIFFICULT ASPECT OF LIVING HERE? I come from a small community. I expected to be coming to the suburbs, where the standards are laid back and low key. I had to digest the fact that, as the Monsey community is

74

/ THE MO NS E Y V IE W

growing, it is becoming more commercialized. With consumerism comparable to the big cities, it is more challenging to keep to one’s standards and refrain from conforming to cultural norms.

HOW DO YOU FIND THE SCHOOL SYSTEM? I belong to a community and its mosdos, and we were, baruch Hashem, accepted in the school of our mosod. The classes there are small, so my children’s adjustment was seamless. In the past, we had spent summers in Monsey, and the children had gone to our mosdos’ day camp. This pre-acquaintance made the transition smoother.

WHAT DID YOU HAVE TO GET USE TO? Living in a development is like living in a bungalow colony, where children are out from Pesach to Chanukah, and I had to set boundaries and rules. Coming from a small community in a secular hispanic city, I appreciated relocating to a city vibrant with Yiddishkeit, where you feel the seasons and Yomim Tovim, and where you feel the pulse of Yiddishe life.

WHAT DO YOU MISS MOST? I experienced a sense of loss when I moved, of having been part of a community where I knew everyone and they knew me. I knew I’d have to slowly build that again by reaching out and creating those connections;

it doesn’t happen on its own. I involved myself in community activities, found out where the shiurim are, and later got a job that allowed me to interact with more people and get to know them. I had to proactively create a niche for myself in the community. I opened myself up to the change, and I proactively looked for opportunities to build a sense of belonging.

IF YOU HAD KNOWN EVERYTHING THAT YOU NOW KNOW ABOUT MONSEY, WOULD YOU STILL HAVE MOVED? Everything is Hashgachah, exactly the way it was supposed to be. What I didn’t know was that I would have to be extremely patient in getting services for my special needs daughter. I was hoping to get services right away, but until everything was set in place took over a year. At this point, she is set up, and we are very happy that we made the move. Chany Rosengarten is excited to introduce this new column, where we meet people who have moved to Monsey as recently as yesterday, or as far back as 20 years ago. As a newcomer herself to this diverse and thriving community, she looks forward to featuring your journey of acclimating to Our Town. Email monseyneighbor@ gmail.com to say hi, to nominate an interview, or to share your story. We look forward to hearing from you.

G N I T N PARE Q&A eth By Faiga Bin

Now that it’s back to business as usual, we find ourselves finally falling into blessed routine. The kids are B”H back in school, the workers back at work, and homemakers catching up with all the various odds and ends they may not have been able to get to over the past few weeks. Although the High Holy Days are officially behind us, the scent of introspection still lingers in the air, and it is with this in mind that The Monsey View is pleased to introduce our new column, Parenting Q&A, to our loyal readership. Here you will find a forum to ask and be answered in your search for chinuch advancement in the home. Advancement in any area of a meaningful life can be compared to climbing a mountain in a rainstorm; the path is treacherously slick and much effort must be invested to propel the hiker forward. If he stops, he will be in danger of the mud and gravity that seek to pull him down. In addition, the parent of a child is not making the trek alone. The children climb in tandem with their parents, connected by the ropes of dependency. The higher they go, the higher their children will also ascend. Allow your minds to expand as you read this column; try new skills, learn new techniques, and always remember to implement our most powerful resource: Tefillah! This column will empower you in your personal hishtadlus, providing tools to grow. However at the end of the day- no strategy will be effective without prayer. We encourage our readers to submit short parenting queries regarding issues which inevitably crop up throughout the career of motherhood. The questions submitted will be addressed by Mrs. Faiga Bineth, longtime qualified parenting expert, founder and director of several special programs for children struggling in the Social/Emotional arena, and Coordinator of various Special Education programs. She will, with the help of Hashem, attempt to answer the questions that readers present with practical hands-on strategies and chizuk for the growing parent. We at the Monsey View are looking forward to growing together with you and all of the Eibishter’s children!

Questions are welcome to be submitted to comments@themonseyview.com.

G N I T N PARE Q&A By Faiga Bineth

QUESTION: It is very difficult for me to remain calm and relaxed in the midst of the mad morning rush. Between whipping up breakfast, packing snacks and lunches, getting kids dressed, temper tantrums, and the neverending morning chores list, I find myself in a frenzied state almost every morning. I am also consciously aware of the weighty achrayus parents carry in sending their kids off to school “full”- both emotionally and physically content. Therefore, I frequently feel guilty after they are finally out of the house and I have a quiet moment to think. I must say, that I am literally starting to dread the mornings. Do you have any ideas on how I can reduce or even better, completely eliminate the emotional drama in our daily morning routine?

THE PARENTING COACH RESPONDS: Firstly, you are a truly admirable woman, showing concern and attentiveness for the wellbeing of your family. You are right; Mothers in particular do actually carry a tremendous responsibility of maintaining the happiness and peace in the home. We all know that the gemara states that mothers are rewarded for doing their duties of sending off and welcoming home their kids from school. Rav Shmuel Rozovsky zt”l said: “The primary and most natural role of the woman is to take care of the young, to protect them, and nurture them and mold them into the people the Ribono shel Olem intended them to be.” Yet, mornings, especially if you also have to go out to work, can be a very challenging part of a mother’s day. How do we

78

/ T HE MONS E Y V IE W

ensure then, that we properly fulfill our sacred role of sending off our kids to school while simultaneously giving them our all and providing for them in a relaxed environment? With just a little planning you can reorganize your schedule and create new routines, so you can honestly say “Good Morning!”

1. PLANNING FOR SUCCESS: Take a moment to stop and think about the next 24 hours. Ask yourself: What will my family need in order for our day to iy”h be successful? Think about what you expect to encounter that are potential trouble spots for yourself or your family. Review your day’s agenda the night before. Mentally prepare yourself to try implementing the tips below.

it’s

still 30

ft long

ADVICE

• TRY USING THE “SNATCH AND

GO” METHOD: Try to prepare snacks and lunches in the evening while the environment is relaxed. Prepare anything that your children will need for school tomorrow and ready their briefcases, including the food items. Homework and books should make their way back into the briefcases as soon as they are finished being used. If the food products will spoil- keep the prepared lunches in the refrigerator- ready to grab at a moment’s notice. CHOOSE THE NEXT DAY’S CLOTHING THE NIGHT BEFORE: Morning brain-fog can inhibit the decision-making process. Lay clothes on a chair or shelf, or hang them on a special hanger. Try to pick the dress together with your child before she goes to sleep; the fewer the surprises, the more cooperative the child will be. LIMIT DISTRACTIONS: Children are easily distracted. To limit the chance of a child becoming distracted by toys, books or the like when the child is supposed to be getting ready for the day, try to pack away all potential pitfalls the night before. Out of sight is out of mind!

2. FORGO SOME SLEEP: By waking up earlier than the rest of the family, you’ll have a sliver of quiet time to savor a cup of coffee, and daven a tefillah with peace of mind before the kinderlach appear- bringing along with them the inevitable distractions. No doubt you’ll feel less rushed and better prepared for the day.

3. LIGHTEN UP: If you are tense in the morning, your children will pick up on it. They are sensitive to your oncoming moods before you may even know it yourself. Instead of nagging your child to get dressed, try to lighten the mood and have a playful race to see who gets finished first.

4. STAGGER WAKE-UP TIMES: If you have a large family ke”h, consider “staggering” wakeup times for greater efficiency. Start with the kids who require the most assistance from you first, as this will minimize your need to be in two places at once.

5. LEARN FROM YOUR MISTAKES: If you had a frustrating morning, think about why it was so stressful. By examining what went wrong today, you can iy”h figure out how to do things better tomorrow. Most importantly is to remember that a composed mother creates a calm atmosphere which ultimately results in happy kids. Therefore, it is crucial for us to set our own limits to keep our minds clear of any external affairs which may divert our attention from our primary responsibilities, leading to swift decomposer. Remember your family comes before everything. All business matters, arrangements, and related pressures ought to be temporarily postponed until after the children have happily left for school. Similarly, consider postponing all non-urgent phone calls for a later time. Furthermore, I would advise you to put on pleasant, lively music first thing in the morning; it truly lightens the mood and adds a bounce to the atmosphere. As you review your routine, you will start to figure out what you will need to modify in order to avoid the panicked rush. By pre-planning your morning in advance you will have transformed your position from a reactive one into a proactive one. B’ezras Hashem you now have great chances of sailing through your mornings encounter-free, stressfree, and trouble-free. Wishing you lots of hatzlacha in this lofty profession of motherhood.

Roundtable discussion

Three experts share their insights on floor options that buyers will be eager to walk on...As an expert in interior design, I highly respect their input.

Motty Walter, Supreme Hardwood Floors

Susan Perlmutter, KJ Tiles In business for 30 years.

12 years in business.

On tile trends: Large format tiles are all the rage now. Not only do they give you less grout to clean, but a more expansive look too. Patchwork patterned tile is new as well. It dials up the drama in any application. Any tips for the tile consumer? Think about durability, maintenance, comfort as well as aesthetics. Tiles are a commitment, so stick to the patterns and colors you've loved for a long time and that can stand the test of time. On Cleaning and care: Clean up spills before it gets a chance of getting comfortable and embedded to the grout. Don't use anything abrasive, acidic or vinegar based as they can cause damage especially to polished tiles. I always recommend a mild household detergent like Mr. Clean for tile and ammonia for grout.

On Wood floor trends: A growing segment in the wood floor industry is rustic, character grade wood whose key elements are visible grains, knots and prominent color variation, as well as assortment of sizes. The wood looks today are more towards wider planks like 5" and 6" width and multi-size planks. Dark stains like Ebony and Jacobean, still remain a favorite amongst customers! Any tips for consumers? Stick to warm colors that will enhance the woods distinctive grain patterns. Remember, wood can be refinished a number of times adding lasting appeal to its natural beauty. On care and cleaning: Use a damp mop with a little vinegar (optional). I recommend a special cleaning line from Bona which offers safe and effective products for your cleaning routine.

Shloimy Rosenberg, Ace Flooring 40 years in business On luxury vinyl and carpet trends: Luxury Vinyl has been making a huge comeback since new introductions like wood and stone looks hit the market. It’s relatively soft underfoot and extremely durable making it a superb choice for kitchens and high traffic areas. The carpet world has exploded with chevron, animal prints, and great shag varieties. Increasingly popular are carpet squares which offer the flexibility to exchange just one area at a time. Tips for consumers: Focus on practicality first! On care and cleaning:I recommend that you have your carpet cleaned by a professional once a year. In the interim, spot clean immediately for fastest results.

MARKETING

MONSEYREBRANDED The Rebrand Series of Checklists

> The personality and attitude. > The Copy > The Color > The Font The last five weeks we’ve explored the practical elements of a brand. I hope I’ve given you enough information to empower you with the knowledge to evaluate your current brand or gain clarity about the eventual brand you’ll want to build. Here I’ve compiled the checklists from the previous articles for you to keep handy. This is also my farewell gift to you, as I wrap up this column. I wish you good luck on all your business adventures!

1

Brand Attitude

Brand Fonts

What is the goal of this business/company?

Is this a Serif or Sans Serif font and why?

How is our service and product different?

Does it connect with the mood I’m trying to portray?

Describe the personality of the owner/founder of the company?

Does it read clearly or do I stumble over it?

What is the age of your potential clients?

Does it read well on the web or mobile?

What is the gender majority of your potential clients?

Is it very dated, or can it withstand the test of 2 years time?

What is the community mindset/ lifestyle of your potential clients? What are your potential client’s values? What is most important to them? What are “no-no’s” to your potential client? How would you describe your competitor’s brand personality?

2

Brand Language

Does the headline grab my attention? Is it centered on your strongest selling point? Is it true to your brand attitude? Does the reader feel emotion? Is it speaking directly to the reader? Do you come across trustworthy? Does it have a call to action? Are there any unanswered questions? If yes, where can they find an answer? Are there any extra words that can be cut out?

88

3

Is it too detailed that it’s almost distracting in and of itself? Does it still look good even when it’s at 200 points for an outdoor banner, or at 8 points for disclaimer text?

4

Brand Color

Does your color reflect the attitude of your brand? Is your color different than your competitors? Does your color appeal to a large enough audience? Sometimes colors have different meanings in certain cultures. Does your color offend prospective clients in any way? (For Example: in most countries Red has a positive meaning, in South Africa Red is a sign of mourning.) Will your color choice work well on a white background? Does your color show up well even in thin fonts and from a distance?

RE ALE STATE

TRID IS HERE

Now that the longanticipated, MAJOR change to the mortgage process is in effect, homebuyers will be affected by the change, with different forms, different timelines and different processes. TRID, also known as the TILA-RESPA Integrated Disclosure Rule, is aimed toward making mortgages more transparent and easier to understand for consumers, but there will be a learning curve.

Under TRID, a lender cannot impose any fee, except a reasonable fee for obtaining a consumer’s credit report, on a consumer, until the consumer has received the loan estimate and has indicated intent to proceed.

1. THE OLD FORMS ARE OUT.

This should make it easier for a consumer to shop for and understand interest rates, but it might take lenders longer to preapprove someone, because they are going to be extra careful when collecting and reviewing borrower information.

The homebuyer will be receiving new disclosure forms from lenders explaining the loan estimate and loan closing.

The Closing Disclosure form combines the final Truth-In-Lending statement and the HUD-1 settlement statement into a shorter form

Keep these three primary areas in mind while preparing yourself for the home-buying process:

96

The Loan Estimate form combines the Good Faith Estimate (GFE) and the Truth in Lending Disclosure into a shorter form that should be easier to understand and explains the mortgage loan’s key features, costs and risks at the beginning of the mortgage process.

/ T HE MONS E Y V IE W

by Ann Zeilingold

that should be easier for the consumer to understand and provides a detailed account of the entire real estate transaction, including terms of the loan, fees and closing costs. This disclosure might transform the closing table from a nightmare experience with piles of documents to review for the first time into a more manageable, slightly bad dream of reviewing the information ahead of time. With more information provided by the lender before the closing date, the various roles held by the lender and title company at the closing table might change. Stay tuned. 2. THE DISCLOSURES MUST BE PROVIDED WITHIN A SPECIFIC TIME FRAME — OR ELSE. Lenders must provide the Loan Estimate form to consumers within three business days of applying for a loan – which means three business days after the

consumer provided the lender with their name, income, Social Security number, property address, property value estimate and mortgage loan amount sought. The Closing Disclosure form must be provided at least three business days before loan consummation (the time the consumer becomes contractually obligated to the mortgage, which is usually at closing). Any significant changes to the loan terms (the annual percentage rate (APR) becomes inaccurate, the loan product changes or a prepayment penalty is added) will restart a new threebusiness-day waiting period. Both the Loan Estimate and Closing Disclosure forms can be delivered in person, by mail or electronic delivery. 3. THE CLOSING PROCESS WILL BE IMPACTED IN THE MONTHS TO COME. The TRID rules apply only to loan applications received after Oct. 3. The timing should be of concern to agents and homebuyers. According to the National Association of Realtors, if 10 percent of transactions experience closing issues due

to TRID, that’s as many as 40,000 transactions a month.

This disclosure might transform the closing table from a nightmare experience with piles of documents to review for the first time into a more manageable, slightly bad dream of reviewing the information ahead of time.

Lenders will be extra careful and hesitant after Oct. 3 while providing mortgages so as not to be out of compliance with the new rules. This will most likely translate to longer timelines to get a mortgage and delayed closing dates. This, in turn, will impact the tight timelines around moving into a home while consumers are also coordinating assets, move-in dates, time off of work and so on. So, prepare yourself for what is to come. TRID is here and it is not going away fast!! Once we get the hang of it, I actually think for the most part, it will be good for the consumer. It’s

only if one is in a rush or has a tight schedule to close, where there will be issues, at least in the beginning. When applying for a mortgage loan discuss the timeline with your lender and review the process to ensure that you are in compliance. The accuracy and delivery of the new forms will be critical to ensure the mortgage process is not derailed or delayed, and for you to have a smooth purchase process.
