Ideally, I recommend you follow a cleansing with a professional in the field, especially if this is the first time you're doing it. Green drinks can be prepared from a large variety of different vegetables; my favorites are celery,cucumbers, kale, cabbage, spinach and a drop of apple, if you want to sweeten it. The amount can be varied according to how many cups you're preparing; there is no exact recipe, just use a few pieces of each vegetable. Enjoy!

YOURVOICE RE: A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH (ISSUE #21) Your Voice - a life and death matter - was not only a great read, but a true call of awareness to the community. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank some people for being aware about lurking allergies and using extra precaution. Like the neighbor who made allergy-friendly pekelech for her son's upsherin. Or the preschool teacher who washes off the kids hands and faces after lunch. Or like the Rebbe who has a stash of prizes instead of nosh when rewarding his talmidim. And like my mother for always having a nice supply of rice dream, egg-free cookies and benadryl... My friend called from the grocery to make sure that she is putting in the
right (read: allergy-free) food in her mishloach manos. Or like my mother in law who puts away a clean portion for my kids before serving anyone else (so it shouldn't be cross contaminated). My sister who is not afraid to have my daughter for a play date and sanitizes her kitchen before she comes... The list continues on and on, and let me tell you- they are all busy people- yet they take a moment to stop, think, care and save lives! MI KE'AMCHAH YISROEL! Let's all applaud them as individuals and as part of a community that helps accommodate us. We truly appreciate it! S.W.
RE: BULLYING (ISSUE #20) I read part of your article about bullying and it is very upsetting that children are suffering so terribly. It might be beneficial to give over how i was taught to deal with it. As a parent, I heard from my Rebbe, R’ Avigdor Miller zt”l the saying, “A drop of honey catches more flies than a gallon of vinegar.” He elaborates on the point that a person could get places a lot easier by being honey - by giving a compliment or a present, than by fighting back or the like. He was once walking down the street and a gentile shouted at

him, to which he replied, “It’s a pleasure to see you. I hope to see you again soon!” The gentile was stunned and kept quiet. So I took this lesson and I tried to deal in this manner with children who constantly bother my children. One kid on my block made my son cry every day, so one day, I took a can of soda with me and I walking boy, I asked the boy a simple question on the parsha, and I told him, “That was a great answer! Here is a can of soda.” And I ended, “The next time that I see you, I will have another question for

I understand that I should be considerate before opening a bag of bamba that has a strong smell - as many people are allergic to peanuts. But as per the letter-writer, Oh Nuts should close down. To say that I can’t eat my cream cheese sandwich or coffee on a bus is taking it too far. Awareness is good, but no nuts at simchos or no coffees on buses is not realistic. I have a friend who is allergic to chicken, so do you think they shouldn’t be serving chicken at simchos either, or no eggs at a Shabbos Sheva Brachos? A Monsey View Reader you and a prize.” My son never had a problem with him again. There is a boy in our shul who fights with everyone. Anytime I walk him by, I wish him a warm “Good Shabbos” and tell him, “You’re such a special boy; you’re from my best friends.” This idea, if done the right way, even if the recipient knows deep down why you’re giving it, can be very helpful. Send over a box of chocolate to the house, bring an extra snack and say, “Here, it’s extra.” Or say it’s because you helped me out or the like.. Continued on page 24

You probably heard the stories about the overweight, jolly person, right? Well, as comforting as that might be, it may be more myth than reality in most people's lives.

Your emotions and how (when and what) you eat are so intertwined, that I think it is virtually and almost impossible for you to lose weight and keep it off without addressing your emotional attachment to food. With that being said, following a solid fat-burning plan while simultaneously working on your emotional well-being will give you the best of both worlds. I would like you to take a close look, and gauge if you fit this or similar scenarios. Only you will be able to make this judgment, because only "you" know the truth. Scenario 1: You just had a heated discussion with your mother. You hang up the phone, and a few minutes later realize that you unthinkingly polished off a half a pint of ice cream.

RAMAPO SUPERVISOR’S PLAN TO CONTINUE IMPROVING QUALITY OF LIFE IN HIS NEXT TERM With elections coming up in just a matter of hours, The Monsey View paid a visit to Town Hall for an interview with Supervisor Christopher St. Lawrence, who is running for reelection on the Democratic ticket. The supervisor shared his thoughts with us on the current state of our town as well as his hopes and dreams for future improvements. By Sandy Eller The first thing I notice when I walk into Ramapo Supervisor’s Christopher St. Lawrence’s office for our prearranged interview is that there is a mezuza on the door. I do a double-take for a brief minute. While I am certainly accustomed to mezuzos, I wasn’t expecting to find one

here. St. Lawrence notices my surprise and tells me that the mezuza has been on his door since he took office over fifteen years ago. St. Lawrence, a lifelong Ramapo resident, is justifiably proud of his years of public service and he acknowledged that while there are some who have criticized him
for his efforts on behalf of the Monsey community, nothing could be farther from the truth. Pointing to the $50 million worth of open space the town has acquired during his tenure to preserve Ramapo’s rural nature and to protect its river ways, and the $200 million worth of sewers that have been installed in the villages of Hillburn and Sloatsburg, St. Lawrence stressed his commitment to all Ramapo residents and noted the importance of maintaining unity within the many diverse groups that make up the town’s population. With the upcoming election just days away, St. Lawrence is eager to discuss the issues that are most on the minds of Ramapo’s Jewish community. Having spent 22 minutes making the trek from my home to Town Hall, a trip that should take no more than 12 minutes, I am elated to hear
the Supervisor’s thoughts on easing traffic on town roads. “One of my main goals has been to improve the quality of life in our town,” said St. Lawrence. “My goal now and going forward is to work on our streets and have better traffic flow.” St. Lawrence, who has his eye on the Routes 45 and 59 corridors, as well as the Route 306 corridor, has been meeting with the Department of Transportation to discuss possible improvements for the heavily traveled roadways. The supervisor intends to turn to his constituents as those plans are formulated. “I plan to put together a task force that will include regular residents and have public meetings for input,” noted St. Lawrence. “We need to find ways to widen roads where they need to be widened, put in turning lanes where they need to be, and do studies to make some roads into one way streets.”

St. Lawrence acknowledged that Ramapo has grown far beyond what its original residents could have ever envisioned over 220 years ago.
The goal is to work hand in hand with the community and the Department of Transportation to study both traffic flow and pedestrian safety and to create better intersections and crossings.
St. Lawrence said that the town has just received a $2 million grant to install sidewalks on the eastern side of Route 306 from Ralph Boulevard through Viola Road. He pointed to the typically congested Cedar Road

Several Spring Valley streets are also on the supervisor’s radar. “Herrick and Decatur are parallel streets that run between West Central and Maple,” said St. Lawrence. “There is no reason why one can’t be one way and one the other way, because having it two-way is dangerous. On Ellish Pkwy we are going to take that island out to allow the street to become a little wider. We are going to put some speed bumps in so it doesn’t become a speedway and so it will be safer for kids getting off the school bus, while giving us some additional parking there as well.”
The goal is to work hand in hand with the community and the Department of Transportation to study both traffic flow and pedestrian safety and to create better intersections and crossings. Another major problem area identified by the town is right

in the heart of Monsey’s main shopping district, further exacerbated by the large number of walkers in the area. “At 59 and 306 going up towards Robert Pitt, we need sidewalks,” explained St. Lawrence. “We need to be safer. We could even have some pedestrian flyovers from maybe Hamaspik to Evergreen. We need to think outside of the box, how we can make it a more walkable, sustainable community.” Another attempt to ease traffic on Route 59 will see the Park and Ride lot moved to Saddle River Road, behind the Goodyear tire store.
St. Lawrence acknowledged that Ramapo has grown far beyond what its original residents could have ever envisioned over 220 years ago. “We are a town that started in 1791,”remarked St. Lawrence. “They are small roads. Sometimes the roads are the ways the cows walked home from the farms that were here.

and if you get off at 14B, you have to cut through all the little local streets and smaller streets,” said St. Lawrence. That
improvement will diminish local traffic by freeing residents from having to make the trek to the existing Thruway exits and also comes with an additional bonus. “That exit will dovetail with the new Park and Ride,” said St. Lawrence. “Coming off that exit, you would turn right and be able to get to the new Park and Ride. There will be a bus stop there and busses will be able to pull right in.”
The supervisor has also long advocated for a new Thruway exit to be located in Monsey, a plan that has been incorporated into the ongoing Tappan Zee Bridge project.
“They are working on it now,” said St. Lawrence. “They are making 400 spaces there and we are going to have new traffic flow which won’t be what we have now, where people are blocking the road on 59 trying to get out of the drive-in theater. It’s a mess.”

Garbage is another hot button issue for residents, but St. Lawrence noted that much of the responsibility for cleanliness in the town lies with residents.
“We have three street sweepers and really, during Pesach we do an incredible job in Monsey, but we should be having that feeling all the time,” said St. Lawrence. “That comes down to not just what the town can do about cleaning the streets, but it also means educating people that when they put their garbage out and it gets picked up, they should take their cans back in because when they are left out it doesn’t look good.” The propensity of some to just discard trash improperly further complicates matters,

and St. Lawrence emphasized the importance of putting out all garbage in suitably closed trash cans the day before pickup and the importance of recycling. “We have flyers and hangers that we are going to put on people’s doors in different languages whether it is in Creole or Yiddish or Spanish, whatever it may be,” explained St. Lawrence. “We want to educate people on how you put out your recyclables, that you should take your garbage cans in and that people have a personal responsibility to keep that area clean.”

back when I was a kid and I know how important it is for us to protect the quality of that water. We have a great community- a great diversity, and our diversity is our strength. We all care about our kids and everybody cares about every child in this community. We need to stop having people put wedges between our communities for political reasons. I always have dedicated myself to this, but I need to do a better job of bringing all of our communities together and make them understand that we are all sharing in this great town.”
Garbage is another hot button issue for residents, but St. Lawrence noted that much of the responsibility for cleanliness in the town lies with residents.
St. Lawrence noted while he has had major disagreements about rate increases with Orange and Rockland over the years, he continues to maintain a solid relationship with the utility company, which has been beneficial in matters relating to the Monsey eruv. Many local organizations in the community have been the beneficiaries of town grants approved by St. Lawrence, allowing them to continue providing various services to residents.

TWENTY ONE Duvid’s Story: Chuna was alive, and he was going to be okay… maybe, they said. It would be a long recuperation. I had already missed two days of work, without a word to Rachamim. I hurried out of my dreams. In the kitchen, Malka’la was sitting and davening. The table was bare, no milk, no bread. “Do we have milk?” I asked her. She shook her head. There was no money. Neither I nor Chaya was bringing anything in. The door to parnassah had shut in our faces the second we became consumed and stressed. “But don’t worry,” she said. I looked at her. When had my Malka’la grown to become my bastion, my rock? “That’s my job, dear. To worry about you.” “That’s the Bashefer’s job. To masbia kol chai,” she said. “Your job is to do only what you can.” I looked at her. “I need to know my children have what to eat. If they don’t,

I will borrow. I will somehow procure. It’s my job.” The inadequacy, mixed with the provider’s pride. Malka’la was silent for a long time. Her lips edged closer together as we waited, as if guarding her words were becoming more burdensome the longer I was willing to listen to her silence. “The rav said we could come.

We need you. That’s all we need.” I said nothing more. But once I was already walking briskly down the street, many responses popped into my head. “I’ll always be here for you.” Partly true, it was certainly a father’s wish, one which, if that father’s Creator willed, and that father did his job faithfully, would perhaps be granted. “You deserve everything,” was also partly true, but what did that have to do with the constraints of reality? So once again, I found myself unable to give, only to take. “Hashem, give them. Give us. Let them grow up with joy, with knowing there is enough. With knowing You.”

His eyes were light, smiling, but serious. I shook my head, clueless. “Did He give you health?”
“Take care of yourself. Because we don’t need things. We need you. That’s all we need.” “And you came here. To work. To provide.” He drank luxuriously. “You are one strong man, chabibi.” “I don’t want to be strong. I want to be…” “What? What is it you want to be?” “I want to be good. Normal. Reassured. I want life to go back to before. To the time when life’s problems were reduced to only bread. It’s only gotten worse.” “That, my friend, is not in our hands. What is in our hands is how we come to what life gives us. If we wake up, talk it out with the Ribbono shel Olam, we do the right thing. We go to work, we pat our kids on the head. That’s all there is to life.” “But…” How do I argue with Rachamim’s logic? “And my Malka’la is getting married.

Hashem.” “What else? What else did He say?” Rachamim pointed upwards. “That the good people of Jerusalem are taking care of my kids?” “Exactly. What else?” “Ah. I suppose… I have work. With you, an endearing and very kind man.” “He said more. He must have said more.” “We all have shoes.” Rachamim nodded. “And we have a home. Malka’la has a wonderful chassan. The girls are running both the house and the store well. The rains didn’t come yet, because Chaya didn’t yet find time to mend their coats.” “Can you see? Hear? Taste?” I was smiling. “But what
if Chuna doesn’t return to himself?” “What if all of Yerushalayim falls to the Arabs, Hashem yishmor? What if miracles happen? What if we can’t predict what the next second will bring? The Eibishter loves you, more than you love Him. As much as you can open your heart, that’s how much you’ll feel Him. Worrying does nothing but clog the heart. Didn’t you just overcome bigger challenges than most people will ever face? Didn’t you show courage and conviction? Didn’t you see open miracles?” He stood up, beckoning me to follow him. We lifted up a heavy refrigerator together and maneuvered it through the warehouse. “As for the wedding,” Rachamim said, “I think I have an idea.” To be continued… Chany Rosengarten is a mother of three, whose love for writing runs almost as deep as her love for nature. WELCOME NEIGHBOR WHAT MADE YOU MOVE?
I was seeing to the care of my grandparents, and we lived in their home in Boro Park. They were nifter two days apart from each other. The house was going up for sale, and as grandchildren, we didn’t have any ownership. We needed to vacate the house on short notice, and we knew we couldn’t afford the exorbitant Boro Park prices.
ARE YOU RENTING OR DID YOU PURCHASE?
We looked at one apartment in Monsey, but it was far out from the area that we wanted to be in, and really not appealing. So we decided to look into buying. We felt that we were done looking when we were taken to Glen Hill for a quick ten-minute viewing. The apartments were really nice, so we had the developer put down our names. Right after Succos of last year, we got a phone call from him with the go-ahead to proceed. We needed a mortgage. I was working as a daycare provider,

and my 1099 wasn’t sufficient for a mortgage. We needed a W2 form. A family member offered to co-sign, but that didn’t work out. Finally, the mortgage broker called me back; the rules had changed! We were approved with my own 1099. Our broker told us, “You must have davened, because the rules just changed in your favor!” It reminded me of a story that I heard from Rabbi Dovid Ashear, about a patient who needed a transplant in a foreign country, but was number 14 on the list. “You go sit there in the hospital,” his Rav told him. As he sat there, an earthquake hit, making it possible for him to receive his transplant right away! Sometimes, the rules change for one person.
HOW DO YOU LIKE THE NEIGHBORHOOD? The people here are like family. I was offered help when I first moved, and the neighbors are happy to lend

Whenever I sit out I always find company, which might not be an advantage for some, but for me, coming from the city, it works very well. I find that a positive outlook filtered down from the parents makes a very big difference in helping the children to adjust. I love the neighbors, and Monsey is beautiful! In Boro Park, living on 42nd and 13th avenue, my children had 8 classmates on one block. Here, there was an adjustment - and we needed to help it happen in the most positive environment possible.
WHAT’S THE MOST DIFFICULT ASPECT OF LIVING HERE? Soon after we closed on our home, my son had to be
hospitalized and then, ten days later, another child found himself in the hospital. I took it upon myself to improve an aspect of my personal tznius. When I told this to my friend, she asked me to speak about it at my class reunion. We hadn’t seen each other in nearly twenty years, and a classmate of mine had just come for a visit from Eretz Yisroel. I donated the book Daughters of Dignity to any classmate who didn’t have a copy, and I told stories of salvation that people had experienced by embracing this special mitzvah, including my own story. That was a very difficult and hectic time, but it resolved, Boruch Hashem.
HOW DO YOU FIND THE SCHOOL SYSTEM? When we moved, my oldest had just been sent to Eretz Yisroel to learn there in Yeshiva, so we didn’t have to worry about placement and adjustment with him. My daughters needed a school, however, and my friend asked Beis Shifra Miriam to just give them an interview; to just have that chance to prove themselves. They got accepted, and my son was accepted into Vien. My husband found out about a mosod that desperately needed a bus driver right at the time we moved. So although he knew nothing about the
winding streets of Monsey, he took the route list, and a GPS, and drove his route around Monsey.
WHAT DID YOU HAVE TO GET USED TO? That I can’t walk to wherever I need to get to. We live very close to Monsey Glatt and even my girls can walk there, whereas I can only walk to Rockland Kosher Shopping Center on a fine day. If I need to go somewhere else, I have to travel a little bit. I really don’t need so much, surrounded as I am with so many wonderful and helpful neighbors. My family thinks I moved to a hick-town, but we are managing fine, even without driving. My children are settled, my husband found his place, and I thank Hashem for being here.
WHAT DO YOU MISS FROM YOUR PREVIOUS RESIDENCE? My family. I’m the oldest child in my family, so although I live in my Monsey now, my parents remain surrounded with children still living at home. When my father had knee surgery this year, I would have felt guilty for showing up way less than I used to, except that my siblings reassured me saying, “When you lived here, you were always helping. Now
you are giving us a chance.” In any case, they are a phone call away, and we get to see the family on yomim tovim. I have a young, teenage sister, with whom my daughters are very close. They get to spend time together on yom tov.
IF YOU HAD KNOWN EVERYTHING YOU NOW KNOW ABOUT MONSEY, WOULD YOU STILL HAVE MOVED? When I came here, I walked with the Eibishter. I didn’t know anyone in Monsey, aside for one friend who suggested that I come look at the Glen Hill apartments. I had looked into moving to Lakewood, and even had schools for my children. At the last minute though, the schools fell through and this opportunity presented itself. It was clearly ratzon Haborei. Chany Rosengarten is excited to introduce this new column, where we meet people who have moved to Monsey as recently as yesterday, or as far back as twenty years ago. You couldn’t help but be impressed by the Wesley fan group with pompoms and banners.
Draizy Wercberger We heard that it was going to be massive event, and arriving at The Atrium proved that theory correct. The first hint of the huge crowd in attendance was the parking lot. It was so jammed that we had to park away from the Atrium, in the Park and Ride. The main draw of this gala event was the cooking show competition. The four competing teams each got four secret ingredients, two to be incorporated in an appetizer and two in the main dish. Additionally they each brought along a boxfull of run-of-the-mill ingredients that they thought they would need. Coconut milk and cannellini beans had to be used in the appetizers and yucca and maple syrup in the main dish. 3..2..1 and the race was on!

Who knew that Monsey had such talent hidden in every street corner? The fresh, original and entertaining way in which the four groups competed with each other was fast-paced, exciting, and kept the audience on its toes, with running commentary by Victoria Dwek.
Four burners, two convection ovens, eight energetic contestants and 45 minutes later, it was over. The dishes were judged by taste, creativity, and presentation, with ten points allotted for each component. The three judges, Malky Levine, Sandy Eller, and myself were the lucky recipients of the most tantalizing, eye-catching and creative dishes. The sophisticated plating was really the icing on the cake.

It was so lovely to see this huge crowd united in supporting such a worthy and noble cause. Who knew that giving tzedaka and helping fellow Yidden would be such fun? I can’t wait to see what Ohr V’Daas cooks up for next year’s party!

DELICIOUS CRUMB CAKE This is a nice change of pace from the typical. It takes minutes to prepare but tastes like it took much longer. 1 stick margarine 1 ½ cup sugar 3 cups flour 1 tablespoons vanilla sugar 3 eggs 1 16-ounce whip, unwhipped 2 teaspoons baking powder 1/3 cup chocolate syrup 1. Preheat the oven to 350. 2. Combine margarine, sugar, flour and vanilla sugar. Mix on low speed until coarse crumbs form. Set aside 1 cup of this crumb mixture. 3. To the rest of the crumbs in the mixing bowl, add eggs, whip and baking powder. 4. Pour the batter into a lined 9x13 pan. Pour chocolate syrup over the batter and marbleize with a knife. Then sprinkle the reserved cup of crumbs over the chocolate syrup. 5. Bake for 1 hour.

Most people associate honey cake with Rosh Hashana, but this cake is so delicious and easy that you will find yourself making it on a weekly basis! 5 eggs 1 ½ cups sugar 3 tablespoons vanilla sugar 2 cups flour 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder ½ teaspoon baking soda ½ cup oil ½ cup honey ½ capful of rum extract 1 ½ tablespoons of coffee, dissolved in ¾ cup boiling water 1. Preheat oven to 350. 2. In a large mixing bowl, combine eggs and sugars. Mix well. 3. Add the rest of the ingredients, and mix until very well incorporated. 4. Pour into a parchment paper-lined 9x13 pan or 2 loaf pans and bake for 1 hour.
CHOCOLATE CAKE SUPREME This cake recipe has been in my family for as long as I can remember. No other chocolate cake can compare; neither in taste nor in simplicity. You don’t bake it in a standard 9x13 pan, but in a larger 12x16 roaster pan. 3 cups sugar 3 cups flour 6 eggs 1 cup cocoa 1 1/3 cup oil 1 tablespoon vanilla sugar 3 teaspoons baking powder 1 ½ teaspoons baking soda 1 teaspoon salt 4 teaspoons coffee, dissolved in 1 ¾ cup hot water 1. Preheat the oven to 350. 2. Combine all ingredients in a large mixing bowl, and mix on medium speed until well combined. 3. Pour the batter into a parchment paper-lined roaster pan and bake for 1 hour.

Rockland Rises to the Occasion for
GREAT BIG CHALLAH BAKE THE
By Sandy Eller I have to tell you that I wasn’t quite sure what to expect when I was asked to be a coach at the Rockland County Great Big Challah Bake event, part of the global Shabbos Project, which was held in ASHAR last Thursday night. Still, saying no is not my strong suit, so I went for official “Challah Coach” training a few days in advance, and showed up at ASHAR at the scheduled time, ready to don my pink scarf signifying me as a certified “Challah Coach.”

From seasoned challah bakers to complete novices, women and girls hailing from all walks of life flocked to their assigned tables and I was wondering how exactly I was supposed to inspire them in this combined spiritual and culinary journey.

The first thing that struck me as I got to the school a full 20 minutes before the scheduled start time was that people were already coming, excited to join women from all across the religious spectrum for the event, whose focus was equal parts challah and achdus. Women of all stripes filed

I needn’t have wondered at all. While most of us are accustomed to going about our lives surrounded by our neighbors, friends and relatives, at The Great Big Challah Bake everyone clicked instantly, no matter what their background. You would think that spending two hours with absolute strangers might be awkward and uncomfortable, but the room was filled, not just with music, but with the companionable
into the beautifully decorated room eager to get their hands doughy. They were struck by the decorations that were simultaneously artistic and
buzz of people enjoying each other’s company. The program was led by Rivky Shimon, who opened by speaking about the significance of challah and all of its components. Throughout the evening the constant hum of 1,000 women and girls chatting amicably permeated the cavernous gym, and when everyone stopped for a moment to daven just prior to Mrs. Shimon’s challah separation- I was struck by just how loud the silence really was. Sending up a quick tefilla of my own, I took a moment to look around the room and take in the absolute stillness. I saw one girl across from me with her eyes closed, her lips mouthing a personal request, and another woman immersed in prayer with her hands over her eyes, while a third nearby was shuckling quietly, and taking advantage of the opportunity to direct her requests heavenward. No matter what their level of religious observance, everyone was clearly connecting with the Ribono Shel Olam, and it was a priceless moment that defined what the Great Big Challah Bake was all about. Within seconds, the room burst to life once again as the music came back on and everyone began rolling out their dough and braiding it amid spontaneous dancing that swept through the room- a celebration of the unity that magically enveloped everyone in attendance. I can’t tell you that there was anyone in the room who will start keeping taryag mitzvos because they made challah at the Great Big Challah Bake, but what I can tell you is that it was an opportunity for all of us to appreciate each other, to respect the diversity that is part and parcel of the kaleidoscope of Klal Yisroel and to create a sense of good will. We walked into the Great Big Challah Bake as individuals; we walked out with as a single unit- the Jewish people b’achdus. Got a craving? In Africa, coffee beans are soaked in water, spiced, and then enjoyed as a popular form of candy. The coffee in your cup resembles nothing of its former state. Once upon a time it was a hard, yellow little berry growing slowly on a tree smelling strongly of jasmine and orange. Over time it became red and ripe. Finally, it was picked and shuttled off to undergo a soaking and de-shelling process that revealed a green little coffee bean inside. Only after roasting that little bean, was it ready to be ground, cooked, and poured into your mug! Before coffee became the breakfast beverage of choice, beer was the American morning favorite. CREATIVE USES Just can’t get enough of the world’s best beverage? Try these ideas for ways to spend a little more time with your favorite bean!
• Pesky cats hanging out uninvited near your flower bed? Spread coffee grounds and orange peels around your garden for a cheap pet deterrent. Most animals hate the smell!
• Freshen up your refrigerator by placing a satchel with coffee grounds inside your fridge and let it whisk away odors.
• Looking for a way to falsely age clothing or paper? Use coffee as a dye! Experiment with different strength brews and different lengths of submersion for various results.

My mission is to locate products that capture the essence of functional design while bringing an element of beauty and durability. Designs on rugs include an overscaled floral motif, bold geometric looks, concentric hexagon forms that make for rich dimensionality and eye-popping composition. Playful pillow collections are prominent players on the home decor scene, from vibrant and saturated color palettes, to lattice influenced medallions. Crocodile embossed leather pillows with subtle metallic shimmer are also making its mark across the spectrum. What strikes me on the bedding arena, are the ombre patterns which traverse the spectrum from light to dark, soothing color palettes, classic blue and white combinations, vivid floral, and glamorous silks. childhood is not my strong point, but I can still recall the magic of strolling down the avenue and noticing that I was able to decipher the signs in the store windows as well as the store names. “Big Sale.” “Chap-A-Nosh.” “Candy Land.” The world had gained an added dimension of excitement. Words haven’t lost their magic since. I also recall the first time I encountered someone for whom words were a chore and a bore. It was approximately three years later, the summer after third grade. During a carefree game of tag, one child was called inside to do summer homework. She emerged from her bungalow with an old reader and a sour face. The worn orange cover with colorful polka dots in rows looked tantalizing to me, so I assumed she was just upset to have to read during the game. I ran over to her and told her we’d wait while she did her homework and could I please read over her s h o u l d e r. She looked at me with disdain and said, “Uch. I hate to read.” Shocked, but undeterred, I walked with her to a nearby bench and said, “How about we take turns? You read one page and I’ll read the other.” Which is what we did. The orange book contained exotic tales of gold and princes, and though her reading was slow and hesitant, it was fun to read and even more so with a friend. The arrangement

became a routine. I think that some of my exuberance rubbed off on her, because at the end of the summer her mother came over and thanked me. I couldn’t fathom why. Wings of Words: The Power of Reading I do now, though. Instilling a love for reading isn’t just about helping children gain fluency in a task that they need in order to pass through school and navigate the more tedious parts of life. If you could give your child wings with which to plumb the depths and explore the breadth of this world, wouldn’t you do it? Reading is wings. If you could give your child a potion through which you child could increase his intelligence, wouldn’t you do it? Reading is that potion. Reading has been proven to increase children’s vocabulary more than speaking or even direct teaching. Better general comprehension, analysis and higher order thinking have all been proven in children who read a lot. Reading increases a child’s ability to understand other’s motives and empathize with others. In other words, it improves social skills. Research has proven that reading in volume is so closely tied to a child’s IQ, that the relationship between reading and IQ is considered almost symbiotic. Read Alouds/ How to Read to Young Kids Instilling a love for reading is something that starts at a young age. While children can be read to from infanthood, reading to a child from the age of about 15 months becomes

a fun bonding experience. Board books with faces of infants or familiar objects are especially interesting. At the age of 18 months children are usually ready for books with unfamiliar objects such as zoo animals, as well as simple board book storybooks. Cars, trucks and other moving vehicles seem to excite boys at any age! At this young age, I often don’t stick to the text. I dramatize a lot and repeat the familiar words while pointing at the picture, “Banana. . . Banana!” I also include lots of sound effects, like animal or vehicle noises as well as interaction. If I read a peekaboo book, for example, we’ll be playing peekaboo of course. Reading aloud doesn’t need to end once a child can read. I’ve got wonderful memories of being read to at the age of eight or nine, and when my mother picks up a children’s book, grandchildren from ages two to twelve gather round to hear. Research has shown that children who are read aloud to have a better pre-reading skills such as rhyming, and the ability to break words down into parts, making it more likely that they will master reading smoothly. Reading aloud is a great bonding experience and a great way to expose a child to the pleasure and power of the written word before they can read. But even more so, it is a wonderful way to model your personal passion for reading and thereby pass it on to your children. Engaging Reluctant Readers When children learn to read easily, it isn’t difficult to get
them excited about reading. Some children take to reading with a passion, without anyone having to instill it. Others may read well, but have little patience or interest in sitting over a book. This is often the case with boys. When learning to read is difficult, however, it is common for children to become frustrated with reading. This can breed a negative cycle where children for whom reading is critical avoid reading and consequently make slow progress and avoid reading . . . How do you spark a passion for reading in children who aren’t interested? Use whatever they are interested in to turn them on to reading. Is your child interested in music, cake-decorating, airplanes or frogs? There are books for children on all of these topics. Purchase them and gift them to your child. You will be nurturing your child’s giftedness in so many ways.
What’s this book’s title? It doesn’t really matter. I’ve got a friend who is a mother of many boys k”ah. She can’t stand the sight of an insect, yet she has a library full of books about insects because these are the kinds of books that will lure her boys. Boys are naturally more inclined to read adventure books and books about boys and there is a growing niche of precisely such Judaica books on all levels. 15 years, and there are books available on many interesting topics. My three-yearold wanted a ‘car-book’ so I purchased Yael Mermelstien’s, A Car That Goes Far. The various vehicles in the book, a car, minivan, van and even bus more than satiated his carcraving. Torah Umesorah has a secular booklist available on their website, chinuch.org, which can be helpful to parents who’d like to dip into a wider variety of books. Having a large, engaging, colorful collection of books around the house is a sure way to find a child picking one up on her own. While it usually a good idea to match the book to the child’s reading level, often, if the content of the book is exciting for the child, he will push himself to read way beyond his level. A fellow writer shared that she had a learning-disabled daughter who desperately wanted to read an advanced novel. It took her the better part of a year to plow through the book, but once she finished, her reading level took a tremendous jump. Comics – Good or Bad? One kind of book that usually entices reluctant readers is comics. The vivid, colored, action-packed pictures tempt children, and they’re motivated to read the text to understand what the pictures convey. Recently, there has been a tremendous proliferation in Judiaca comics books. This has led to a discussion regarding comics in a writers’ group I belong to. One writer vehemently argued against them. She claimed that they were the literary equivalent to junk food. I’ve always felt that comics were a valuable to contribution to Judaica. A child who reads well will read comics as part of a wider repertoire, and if comics book entice reluctant readers, then they deserve accolades, not criticism. The literary value of the comic books I’ve seen is top-notch. They are often a simpler version of already-published books. Most of them contain stories with sound hashakafa and quality lessons. And most children don’t get stuck at comics. Once they feel comfortable with the written word, they move on to the more complex texts. So if your child is not all that happy about reading, try comics. They’ll do more good than harm.

This is the final article in The Rebrand series of checklists. The previous articles focused on the personality and message of the brand, the copy, and the color. Fonts. A world unto themselves. Graphics designers can tell one font apart from another even when they appear very similar. The way the letters are spaced, the kerning, how they wrap one letter next to the other; most people don’t pay much attention to it- but that’s the beauty of a font. A font will set a tone and mood without anyone giving it a second glance. Fonts are the most subtle impression of who you are. Without any color, imagery or words, a font lends an understated presence. That’s why it’s important to have the right one. Fonts are not something you can choose on your own. A skillful designer will evaluate the balance of all the visuals at hand and figure what font is needed. Here I will aim to teach you a bit about the realm of typography so that when you choose a designer you aren’t completely ignorant. The most basic division among all fonts is “Serif” and “Sans Serif.”
SERIF SANS SERIF 86
Serif fonts are typically believed to be more classic, elegant, and formal, while sans serif fonts are more straightforward, simple and modern. The most popular controversy is that a serif font should be used for content and a sans serif font for headlines. However, today most designers have dropped this belief and simply operate on project basis, figuring the balance of fonts for each project anew. Another belief is that only sans serif fonts are good on the web, since the little “serifs” get very pixilated on screen and don’t show up well. However as technology has improved, as well as the quality of screens, many have dropped this principle as well. Historically, when organizations or the government wanted to enlist the help of citizens or community members, they would write in a script font since they found that people viewed the request as friendly, organic, and nonthreatening. Still today, script is used to create a friendly environment but often also a pure design element, to make copy “pretty.” Another element that can completely change a font is the difference

in uppercase or lowercase letters. Here’s a list of questions to ask yourself when evaluating your choice of fonts:
1. Is this a Serif or Sans Serif font and why?
2. Does it connect with
the mood I’m trying to portray?
3. Does it read clearly or do I stumble over it?
4. Does it read well on the web or mobile?
5. Is it very dated, or can it withstand the test of two years’ time?
6. Is it too detailed that it’s almost distracting of itself?
7. Does it still look good even when it’s at 200 points for an outdoor banner, or at 8 points for disclaimer text?
When it comes to the topic of fonts, you can gather “designer” the world over, but if you are not conveying the correct message for the business, the designer font won’t help. Fonts, though many have tried to create guidelines and rules for them, have the most diversified opinions and controversy. Though myths and popular belief abound, with fonts, you just have to read between the lines. Until next week,

30-DAY CLOSINGS: MYTH OR FACT? by Ann Zeilingold
mortgage guidelines that went into effect October 3rd, the mortgage industry is scrambling to figure it all out. It is possible to close a mortgage loan in 30 days or less. That is a fact. Unfortunately, it doesn’t happen that often. On purchases, there is just too much to juggle at once. The seller needs time to move; the buyers need to give notice on their rented apartment… On refinances, we usually are finished with the approval of the file within 30 days, but then a lot of times we are waiting for CEMAs (consolidation extension modification agreements). This is a legal maneuver whereby the borrower can avoid paying the mortgage tax on the existing mortgage again. It can save borrowers thousands of dollars. Unfortunately, CEMAs can take one month to four months. Now with the launching of TRID (TILA RESPA Integrated Disclosure), new

Currently, we are two weeks into TRID. Let me share a few observations I gleaned: 1.
If you don’t have email access, your mortgage will take longer.
2.
We must allow an additional week to two weeks from the application to closing.
3.
Different lenders are handling TRID differently.
To further explain this, throughout the loan process, there are numerous COC (Change of Circumstances) that need to be disclosed to the buyer. Generally, we disclose this information via email. Now with TRID, if we don’t have your consent prior to you signing your mortgage application and disclosures, to communicate via email, then we are not allowed to disclose anything via email, and we need to mail all the
COC and disclosures to the client. There is a 7-day wait period after mailing these items/documents to the client that we don’t have when we email the same to the clients. So by not agreeing to email, or if you don’t have email access, there is a forced wait period that will postpone your closing. Now that we are actively engaged in doing business with TRID, we are learning how to deal with the rules. One rule is that a client must sign a form, “Intent to Proceed.” Without that form signed and returned to us, we cannot order the appraisal. I recently experienced this. We disclosed an application in which we spelled the first name incorrectly (Avrohom vs Avraham). The client didn’t want to sign until this was corrected. This triggered a COC, then re-disclosure. All of these changes have legal wait periods, so we could not order the appraisal until we were already over 7 days into the process. We actually were
ready, at that point, to submit the file for a commitment; we issued a commitment even though the appraisal was not back yet.
Now with the launching of TRID, the mortgage industry is scrambling to figure it all out. Besides TRID, just revamped all of guidelines, and guidelines are stricter before.
FHA their most than
Besides the rules being stricter than before, making it more difficult - in some instances - to qualify for
an FHA mortgage loan, the underwriters have to relearn the rules and guidelines. Donna Hemberger, Senior FHA underwriter with FM Home loans said, “Since the guidelines are so different, I need to look things up as I underwrite a file. Therefore, it takes me about double the time to underwrite a mortgage file than before.” Additionally, there are now instances where even if we have an online approval, we need to downgrade the file to a manual underwrite, which inflicts more restriction on the buyer. In order to alleviate these issues somewhat, it will boil down to a mortgage
representative knowing his guidelines really well, and for buyers to build in more time for unforeseen delays in the process. So can one close in 30 days? Realistically, until our industry understands TRID well and learns the new FHA guidelines, I wouldn’t count on it. Stay tuned for more information, as we navigate the unchartered waters of new mortgage changes and guidelines.

אייגנטליך דאס ,אז מען זאל נישט רעדן בשעת'ן דאווענען .אויפן פליקאט איז פאראן א ווענדונג צו יעדן באזונדער ,אכטונג צו געבן על קדושת המקום ,און זיכער מאכן אז מען רעדט נישט אין דעם דאזיגן מקום קדוש. דער דאזיגער פליקאט – צוויי אין צאל ,אויף די צוויי זייטן פון שוהל איז אן עדות אויף דער קוואליטעט און תוכן פון דעם בית-המדרש.מיר דארפן שוין נישט צופיל ארומפרעגן און מברר זיין .אזעלכע פליקאטן ווייזן אויפן ציל פון די מיסדי בית-הכנסת ,ווי אויך אויף וועלכע סארט אופן דער בית-המדרש ווערט געפירט. ראדושיצער בית-המדרש פארמאגט דעם חן פון אחדות און צוזאמענלעבן .אין דעם בית-המדרש דאווענען אינאיינעם חסידי'שע אידן פון אלע הויפן און חצרות ,און אלע מיט איין אחדות ,אזוי ווי דער פסוק זאגט 'ויעשו כולם אגודה אחת ,לעשות רצונך בלבב שלם' .עס דאווענען דארט אידן פון ויז'ניץ ,באבוב ,סקווירא ,סאטמאר ,בעלזא און פון וואו נישט? – אלעס מיט אן אחדות און געשמאק ,האבנדיג איין מטרה צו דינען דעם אויבערשטן און דאווענען מיט געשמאק.
אכסניא של תורה
דער בנין בית-המדרש ענהאלט אין זיך א שיינער מקוה ,קאווע שטיבל ,היכל התפילה מיט אן עזרת-נשים וואס איז געבויעט געווארן אויפן אן אויפן, אז זי זאל באנוצט ווערן אלס חדר-שני לתפילה אין די וואכן טעג. א באזונדערע דגש איז אריינגעלייגט געווארן אויף די באקוועמליכקייט און שיינקייט פון דעם בנין ,אז זי זאל דינען אלס מקום נוח פאר די מתפללים ולומדים פון דעם בית-המדרש ,שיין און באקוועם זיך צו געפינען אין דעם בית-השם. דער ארט איז טאקע דער בעל-אכסניא פאר פילע אידן ,וועלכע זענען זיך קובע מקומם אין דעם בית-המדרש ,זיצנדיג צווישן אירע פיר ווענט און זענען עוסק בתורת קל חי .דאס אלעס א דאנק די באקוועמליכקייטן און געשמאק פון בית- המדרש ,באזונדער דארף צוגעגעבן ווערן דער געשמאקער אוצר-הספרים וואס באצירט די ווענט פון דעם מקום קדוש, לרחבת המתפללים והלומדים. אין די יעצטיגע טעג האלט אינמיטן געפארטיגט ווערן דער שיינער שמחה- זאל וואס וועט דינען פאר אידן אין די גאנצע געגנט ,צו פראווען שמחות ברוב פאר והדר .דער דאזיגער זאל וועט געפארטיגט ווערן אין די קומענדיגע וואכן, און אנטשפרעכט צו זיין א הערליכער זאל לרחבת תושבי עירמאנט והגלילות. דער טאג אין ראדושיצער בית-המדרש
הויבט זיך אן אום 6:45אינדערפרי ,מיטן שיעור פונעם רב .יעדן טאג לערנט דער רב פאר חק-לישראל און דערנאך שטעלט זיך דער ערשטער מנין שחרית ,אום 7:30אינדערפרי .עס איז פאראן אויך נאך א מנין שחרית אום 8:30אינדערפרי. דורכ'ן טאג איז דער בית-המדרש אפן און ברייט פאר ווער עס וויל דארט קומען לערנען .ביינאכט איז פאראן דארט שיעורי תורה און פיל שכנים פילן אן די בענק פון בית-המדרש .עס איז אויך פאראן א שיעור אין גמרא-רש"י ,דורך הרה"ג ר' יואל ראטה שליט"א ,וועלכער לערנט פאר דעם שיעור בטוב טעם ודעת. מנחה דאוונט מען בזמן און אויף מעריב זענען פאראן צוויי מנינים, אכט-אזייגער און ניין-אזייגער.

אז עס קומט שבת ,איז דער בית-המדרש פושט צורה ולובש צורה ,עס באקומט א שבת'דיגע טעם און אויסקוק .עס דארף ארויסגעברענגט ווערן די הכנה לשבת ,וואס ווערט אפגעראכטן צווישן די ווענט פון בית-המדרש ,בשעת עס ווערט אנגעפירט א פראגראם פאר די קינדער ,פארן זמן פון שבת ,דורך הרב ר' אברהם מרדכי שטיינמעץ הי"ו ,וועלכער פירט אן בכלל מיט פראגראמען
