didn’t think your Sukkos Food and Family section, titled Time for Dessert, would hold anything of interest to me. At the end of the meal, I am simply done eating. But I am not done drinking! The fruit tea was so flavorful and delicious, and although the night was not that cold it was such a cozy and tasty ending to the meal. I also tried the Mintachinno, and the mint flavor in it revived me instead of making me lazy and sluggish. like heavy desserts usually do.

Our plumber brought it to our attention that there are many boilers that are problematic to use on Yom Tov, and many people are unaware of it. You can call your Rav or plumber who are familiar with the mechanisms of a boiler and the pertinent halachos. Our boiler, one which is not allowed to be used on Yom Tov is Prestige from Triangle Tube. It is possible that other models from that company have no prohibitions involved. ~ A Monsey Resident To the Tea

~ L. D. On Temporary Dwellings (Issue #19) I found Ann Zeilingold’s column on temporary dwellings very insightful and relevant. About a year ago, we purchased an investment property in an area on the outskirts of Monsey which has recently become popular. Now that the value has risen significantly, we were actively looking for a home “in the area” and thought we’ll flip our original house to fund that. Ann’s article made us aware of the high taxes we’d have to pay in such a case, something we never took into consideration. So I would like to extend Continued on page 24

YOURVOICE

YOURVOICE To All Yiddishe Mommies: My heart is broken. It’s been two very long, sad hours. Two hours of hearing a bitterhearted mother relate her tale of woe. You see, this mother has two cute, adorable daughters with middos to be envied. I’m not just saying that because I’m biased; I’m speaking from experience. These precious little girls came up to my bungalow colony for a few days in the summer to escape the bullying they experience back home. Up there in the country everyone wanted to be their friends- it's only here in Monsey that they feel like social pariahs. I know that there’s already been so much said on the topic of bullying; Boruch Hashem we have progressed to the days of unmitigated awareness. We’ve all read the articles, heard the speeches, and are aware that many schools now feature teacher-observed recess. But it’s not enough to have general awareness; it is admitting that our own precious kinderlach might sometimes be the instigators. For many long and painful days this poor, disheartened mother watched her daughters suffer, the mothers of the taunting children unaware… Finally, when she couldn’t bear to watch the simchas hachaim being sucked from her children’s life anymore, she she picked up the phone and called her neighbors, respectfully informing them of the situation. It was shocking to witness the denial, or rather the refusal to

22

assume parental responsibility. Mrs. A responded with a nonchalant, “Yes, I know she’s a difficult child. I have problems with her at home too, and I can’t take care of what goes on outside.” The reaction in Mrs. B’s home was one of utter offense. It couldn’t possible be her precious angels behaving in such a manner, she said, and if by any chance they had ever bullied, it was only because of peer pressure. Her kids, she maintained- were the nicest on the block. The situation escalated after this phone call when the bullying grew in intensity, reinforced by parental disbelief. The girls on the block continued to torment the little darlings of our story, chanting tauntingly afterward, ““Now you’ll tell your mother, and she’ll call our mother. You’re such babies!” I’ve just spent two painful hours trying to console an inconsolable mother; a mother who spends her days doling out hugs to teary-eyed girls, trying to help them find an island of comfort in their pain. She’s spending money that she doesn’t have to help the children learn to remain healthy in spite of their situation, and spending energy that is forever waning; reminding them that a time will come when new neighbors will finally move into the houses being built on their block, promising them that finally they will have friends once again. But is it really so? I fear that once families A and B send out

their children to play with the newly arrived neighbors, they will turn the tide against these already stigmatized girls, and the bullying crowd will only grow. I’m turning now to the Monsey View, a magazine that has grown in popularity at an unparalleled rate, knowing that this is a forum to reach the whole of Monsey. We have barely passed the time of year in which we beseeched Hashem for forgiveness and pleaded for a Gut Gebencht Yahr. Was our Yom Kippur truly a day of cleansing if we didn’t rectify the sins bein adam l’chavero? Can we really look at innocent little children whose blood is being spilled daily, and say to ourselves, “Yadeinu lo shofchu es hadamhazeh”? This message is for both children and their parents alike. The chiyuv for being mechanech your children lies on your shoulders, Mommy and Tatty. Don’t believe they could ever bully? Just peek outside; you might be surprised. Call your children’s school and inquire what the class dynamics are. Have an open dialog with your childrenask them who they play with, and alternatively who they don’t play with, and why. Tell them stories of Tzadikim who have gone out of the way to not hurt others. Work on being a positive role model for your children- speaking softly and sensitively to all types of people. And if by any chance a phone call comes in about your children: accept that kids can cross borders at times. It doesn’t mark them as evil, but it does mean the issue needs to Continued on page 24

be addressed and nipped in the bud. There is no greater nachas than watching one’s children all playing nicely together. Our Father stands watching us, His yidden- His children. Can’t we give Him that great nachas? I think it's time we seriously try. Pleafully, A Pained observer of this sad situation. ~ A.C.R

BECOMINGWEIGHSMARTER Crash Diets: Are They Really Worth It?

As I’m sitting and writing this article on Motzei Yom Tov, it's hard to believe that we are wishing each other “a gezunta winter.” All the hecticness of shopping, cooking, baking and preparing is winding down into the settled, scheduled and cozy months of winter.

praying for a gezunta winter, you're surely desperate to start some kind of diet immediately. Many people have overindulged on Yom Tov, having in mind to “start a diet right after yom tov is over.” Some people are

would like to discuss in this article are the advantages and disadvantages of a crash diet. As a side note, cleansing and juice fasting is not what I refer to as a crash diet. Those can be done under supervision for many health benefits, and of course, you are always going to lose weight doing that. The Rambam suggests cleansing periodically, and some people do so every year after Sukkos and Pesach.

Many people have overindulged on Yom Tov, having in mind to “start a diet right after yom tov is over.”

Although many of you are left with extra weight to deal with, it’s inspiring to know that you are also left with an uplifted neshama, many beautiful and heartfelt tefillos, tears that surely broke through Heaven’s gate, and tremendous joy from Simchas Torah. According to the dictionary, a crash diet would be defined as: 1. undertaking a diet with the aim of achieving rapid weight-loss results 2. a diet plan where calories are reduced to below safety levels, and would be almost bordering on starvation Advantage: Without a doubt you can lose 30 pounds in 30 days! *Yo-yo dieting has shown to cause many illnesses and even damage to the body. Many people I know have developed diabetes and high blood pressure by “playing around with their weight.”

Gymnastics. Like the Pros. By Chany Spira

What mental image does the mention of a kids’ gym conjure up? I, for one, pictured a spill of mini treadmills occupying one wall, with a limited number of pink weights strewn about a colorfully tiled floor; perhaps even some yoga mats and a young, undertrained instructor blowing a whistle. After all, it’s just a kids’ gym. Right? That would be a resounding no - if Malky Blum had any say in the matter. Nothing quite prepared me for the enamoring world of health, fitness and fun hiding behind the nondescript door of the GymPros gymnasium. GymPros is situated in the heart of residential Monsey for easy accessibility, and tucked away behind bushes and trees for modesty. The professionalism, skill, and cando attitude permeating the facility have to be experienced to be believed. I stepped in, and a blow of soft lilac greeted me. I was immediately enveloped by this entire world; a fitness-true environment with a childfriendly atmosphere. GymPros

34

/ T HE MONS E Y V IE W

succeeded in developing and maintaining a completely new world of kosher yet hard-hitting gymnastics. Everything about the place and personnel exhibits a philosophy that has less to do with putting numbers on a chart and everything to do with welcoming Monsey’s younger generation into an authentic, heimishe, positively motivating gymnastics zone. Malky Blum (Silber), sole proprietor and original ’gym

pro,’ greeted me with a twinkle in her eye. “Is this what you expected to see?” Of course it wasn’t. Not by a long shot. Out loud, I only laughed. Her knowing look told me she was used to the openmouthed initial responses. And rightfully so. This kids’ gym features 3,000 square feet of well-padded foam floors, a wide array of equipment that screams top notch, and gorgeous, clean facilities.

Why Gymnastics? I arrived just in time for an afternoon class warm-up. Listening to just one stanza of the GymPros anthem – softly projected over the high-tech PA system – answered many of my would-be questions: “Gymnastics has just pros no cons, starting with agility, No weaks, no creaks, for sure no freaks, just fun and flexibility, Coordination, dedication, power, strength, and speed alike, Fitness, balance, health as well, woohoo let’s yell GymPros we like!” That left few ‘Whys’ to ask. I was amazed to observe that the entire GymPros program includes so many of the values teachers and parents tirelessly strive to instill in kids. With the school hours being so long and tiresome to many children, a GymPros session helps them feel successful as they amass a world of skill and confidence in just a single hour. This weekly GymPros boost carries them through the week, and the coordination and perseverance they learn carry them through life.

for their 4th year. You can be sure their sisters are anxiously awaiting their fifth birthday, the qualifying age for GymPros membership. It’s quite inspiring to observe the seriousness and concentration on the children’s faces. It’s obvious that the body-mind coordination behind every cartwheel, back-bend, flip, and split contribute greatly to each child’s growth. To further each girl’s sense of belonging and to offer parents a real view into how time is spent at GymPros, a video screen features a constant playback of class snippets. The girls feel true pride watching their graceful selves mastering difficult moves. No wonder all young ’gym pros’ wear their purple T-shirts with gleeful pride.

When?

“The feeling of success and accomplishment in a non-academic setting often transforms a child,” Malky tells me, as if reading my mind.

Malky Blum focuses strongly on the When. Class routine is central to the wellbeing of kids who find difficulty with schedule. It’s also great for the kids that thrive on sense and system; each class starts at the beginning of the gymnasium floor and makes its way around in a semi-circle. It kicks off with a warm-up and ends with balancing bars. Each student knows exactly what will happen, when it will happen, and how it will happen.

Countless parents and their happy children readily attest to Malky’s statement. Malky and her team have trained more than 200 students in the past year alone! Many of these are now repeat students and are attending GymPros

In addition, the walls at GymPros have detailed diagrams of all the skills being mastered. Every week they gauge their progress, which teaches them the life skill of assessing personal accomplishments.

Top 5 Reasons Why Gymnastics Is Right for Your Child

1. Health An active lifestyle is vital for your growing child. Gymnastics will teach your child the value of keeping her body in shape, move around and keep her muscles active.

2. Discipline, Persistence and Commitment

In order to excel at gymnastics, your child will learn - in a fun way - the positives of staying committed to a program and taste the accomplishment of achieving a goal through hard work and discipline. She will practice skills again and again and leave with some homework to improve the technique at home.

3. Self Confidence Excelling at a fine art or craft greatly increases a child’s emotional health. Whether it's showing off to grandma or even mastering a skill with no eyes around, your child will receive an incredible self-image boost.

4. Kosher Outlet and Mental Getaway

Even the best student needs some of that 'camp spirit' during the long school year. Your child will look forward to her GymPros class all week. It’s the one hour where she will be able to focus her energy on a positive, extra-curricular activity.

5. Developing Balance, Motor Skills and Coordination

With a professional gymnastics program, your child will learn how to properly use her body, improve her overall coordination and make the utmost use of every muscle Hashem granted her. The long-term benefits are enormous.

What? When I ask Malky what the goal is at GymPros, she expounds in a three-part answer: SAFETY FIRST. Malky 1. didn’t settle for anything less than the safest. She went as far as to pay for the travel expenses of a gym-building expert so he could visit and develop the entire experience on site. A GREAT TIME, EVERY 2. TIME. The class focus is on recreation and on making the most of the hour! GYMNASTICS! Healthy, 3. sweat-inducing physical activity. “But even then,” Malky emphasizes, “each girl knows that the GymPros classes are not a means to an end, but rather every class is the goal! I make sure they utilize the hour to build

much more than their muscles; I make sure they build themselves.” In her integration ‘speech,’ Malky tells each girl, “The only person to compete with is yourself.” That’s one of the key differences between GymPros and a secular gym. Before hiring an instructor, Malky ensures that not only is she skilled at gymnastics, but that she also adores children! I listened as Chany, one of

the instructors, gently guided a girl toward the Tumbl Trak for a challenging handspring. The entire team cheered her on and high-fived her when she proudly mastered it. There was absolutely no competition involved in the entire routine.

Who can benefit from GymPros? Every child that needs a physical outlet with the taste of success will flourish at GymPros. And this healthy

To give you a little taste of gymnastics, we are sharing some tips on how to master a few basic skills that are achievable and safe to try at home with adult supervision. THE BRIDGE: One of the most basic and important skills in gymnastics is a bridge. The bridge helps improve arm strength, lower back flexibility, and overall body coordination. The ability to perform a bridge is necessary in many advanced gymnastics skills.

1.

Start off with body lying flat on the ground with hands straight up like you’re holding 2 pizza pies.

5. 2.

Bring knees up and keep your heels flat on the ground.

3.

Put hands down (drop both pizzas flat on ground) making sure palms stay on floor and fingers point towards feet.

4.

Push up with hands, using stomach muscles to help you get up, and dig your feet into the ground.

Hold for 15 seconds.

Join us for our winter semester! malky@gym-pros.com 304-4-GymPro (304-449-6776) outlet isn’t limited to girls. Due to huge demand, Malky added boys’ classes on Sundays. She hired Yiddish- and Englishspeaking male instructors to cater to the entire community.

Yes, even a child who is not gymnastically inclined can blossom at GymPros. Every single child becomes better than they were the week before.

As Mrs. Chana Bergman shares, “Gymnastics was a totally new concept to me, and I was unsure whether it was for our family or not. But my son, Sruly, is a different child since he started GymPros. Sunday gives him the confidence to attack yeshiva the next morning. His Rebbe can’t stop saying how these classes improved his attitude and demeanor!”

How did GymPros evolve? When Malky was a kid and felt intrigued to try gymnastics, she had to hire a private instructor and attend a gym after hours. "I realized soon enough what a great demand existed,'' says Malky. She went through the certification process and started teaching out of her parents’ dining room.

But then GymPros went viral. All those who trained with her referred their friends and sisters, and the dining room couldn’t serve the growing appetite of Monsey’s youth. As with everything she does, Malky only wanted to make the next move the real way. That’s how she decided to take the plunge and somersault her way into proud gym owner. From the general facilities to each and every piece of equipment, GymPros is a beautiful gym. Take it from me: While only a visit will do the gym justice, try to get a sneak peek at some of the pieces, at the very least. One

THE SPLITS: The splits are widely known as important for flexibility and to prevent injuries. Surely, you have tried them multiple times and gave up when your hamstrings refused to cooperate... Luckily, we broke it down into simple steps. With a little time, patience, and persistence, you too can master it.

1.

Lunge, drop your back knee to the ground, and push you back foot farther back.

4.

2.

Pull your back leg in with your hand and hold for 15 seconds. You will feel the stretched in you upper thigh.

Push yourself back up. Supporting your body with both hands on the ground, push your back foot the most back possible. When you feel the stretch, hold for 15-20 seconds.

5.

3.

Drop your back leg and push it back a little bit more. Lower your body down on the inside of the foot and hold for 15 seconds. Make sure your front foot is still in a 90 degree angle.

Repeat the stretches every day until you can get all the way down. Although you will have one side that’s easier than the other, try it every day on both legs.

A glimpse at some of the many exciting skills we teach at GymPros:

BACK TUCK

highlight is the 480-cubicfoot in-ground pit lined with foam blocks, which create an absorbent surface for safe landings. There's also a long Tumbl Trak which can be described as a trampoline on the floor with a hollow bottom. The girls perform their intricate runs and flips straight from the Tumbl Trak into the Pit. I gasped as nine-year-old Tova executed a perfect backflip into the pit! She’s obviously talented, and I marveled when I heard she’s only been with GymPros for two months.

I asked Tova what she loves about GymPros. “Oh, I love gymnastics and I love my instructor. I think gymnastics would be quite challenging with a different type of instructor.”

BACK HIP CIRCLE

It's clear that Tova is referring to the infectious enthusiasm and spirit that Malky and her instructors exude. Instructor Chany adds: “Today, I’m a certified instructor. But I actually attended classes in Malky’s dining room. She pushed and guided me until I was ready to become certified. I’m so grateful to work here.

And let me tell you, it’s the best of both worlds; top-notch professionalism without the competition.”

Stone NINETEEN Duvid’s Story: “I’m a father. I did what all fathers do. I provided for my family. Give me my child.” She was a woman, big faced, black haired, lips pursed in self-justification. I knew she had some humanity down there, although it wasn’t apparent, and I appealed to that invisible force I knew resides in all mothers, all humans really, though some hide it deeper than others. “We did not forsake the child. Believe me, we love our children more than anything. More than anything. Even more than ourselves.” “It is not possible to love more than the love you have for yourself,” she said. “All you have in love is yourself. Everything else is illusion. Selfishness. Damage. Like your son.” I closed my mouth tightly; there was nothing I could think of to say. My eyes stung

A long moment passed, in which neither of us said anything. She looked at me; “Adela” it said on a wooden name plaque on her desk,

“But I don’t hate you,” I continued. “Because we are part of one family, part of Am Yisrael. I know you are holding very tightly to something that gives you meaning. And you can’t even exhale, can’t even feel what it would feel like without that perception. Let alone feel what it is like to be me, a father whose child needs me now, just as he has always needed me, just as I always was with him.

She peered up at me, eyes placid.

“You’re not an idiot,” Yossi said. “You guys know how to turn the city upside down if you need to.” He was right. the self-satisfaction never leaving her. I walked out. She thought I was going to sit on one of her chairs, waiting. Waiting for what? For her to decide my fate? I couldn’t do that. I needed a smoke. I had spoken myself into a fever of emotions, and now, pitched as they were, I needed to release them. “Eibishter,” I said, and I walked. Briskly down the corridors, descending the stairs, into the heat of the street I went. “Eibishter?” There was no need for babble, no need to explain, because I could hardly explain my heart to myself. But I could feel it. And the Eibishter could, too. Especially if I opened it up to Him. I reached the small, round kiosk at the corner. Candies. Lottery cards. As if anyone ever won anything. But cigarettes were different; they helped you pull breath and warmth deep into yourself every time you opened your lungs. The clouds had cleared in my eyes. I approached the window of the kiosk, the Rosh Hashanah nusach of “haneshamah lach v’haguf peulach” on my breath. “What’s happening, my friend?” Yossi, the owner, greeted me. “My son is in there.” I threw my head back to show where. “Ach,” he said. “I figured. Where do you think I make my bread and butter from?” “They won’t let me see him. I’m very afraid.” I looked into Yossi’s eyes. They were a dark olive, almost black. A panic enveloped me, seizing my breath. There had been hundreds of Yossis. Their parents were told Bashefer knows what before their children were whisked away, never to be heard of again. I shuddered. “You’re not an idiot,” Yossi said. “You guys know how to turn the city upside down if you need to.”

He was right. Of course. Secluded as I was in my world that had turned the size of a soap bubble, I had completely forgotten the warning of Velvel Parnass. “Don’t tell them anything. And if you need help, we are here.” Infused with renewed vigor, I ran down the hill, my feet flying. My belabored breath only infused me with more passion. I only stopped to take a bus down to the city, where I got off and ran, wildly, until the shtieblach. Velvel wasn’t there. He was working, of course.

When was the last time they spent 24 hours with a nineyear-old? So they want to punish me, take away the child. I don’t know what. They won’t even let me see him.” “So we need a hafguneh,” proclaimed the young man, whose name I didn’t even know but I supposed he was Mann’s son. “Yes,” I said. “We’ll arrange one for tonight. We need to speak with the rabbanim. We’ll all be there.” “Thank you,” I said. Because I knew they cared. I knew that unlike some people with stone walls around their pure hearts, these people had built a wall of fire. “And the sooner the better. Because I haven’t seen my son since he was whisked into surgery. And I don’t know; I hope that the fact that they’re not letting me see him means that he is well, and not, chalilah, the opposite.”

In a short few hours, I needed to be ready for the showdown. And for what came after. But there were plenty of people hanging around after Shacharis, devouring the rugelach someone had brought in for a yahrtzeit. “We heard about your son,” Zimmerman said. “They won’t let me see him,” I said, and instantly, the circle moved around me in accordance with my willingness to share firsthand. “I need help.” “What are they saying?” a very young man, hardly a hint of facial hair, asked with utmost seriousness. “They are blaming us. They don’t know how it happened that Chuna fell off the roof.

“You’ll have it. By five this afternoon this parshah is behind you,” Zimmerman said. I walked out. I should go home, check on the other children. I should also go back to Adela and warn her of what was coming. But she would find out soon enough. I had done everything in my power, and that was all I could do anyway. I needed to rest

before the big showdown. I hadn’t slept last night. Adrenaline was still fueling me but was leaving me giddy. I needed to go home. I also needed to tell Rachamim. I had only just started a job, and already, I didn’t show. Should I work now, push myself to lug appliances instead of sleeping? But I couldn’t. Rachamim would understand. He would ask, after yesterday, what had happened, and he would give me the time off. And if he wanted me to leave my job, then, well then it would be back to square one, only having lost so much on the way. For now, I needed to rest. In a short few hours, I needed to be ready for the showdown. And for what came after. CHANY FRIEDMAN Lives on: 5 Ridge Avenue, Spring Valley Family: One girl and three boys, ages 7 years to 14 months Occupation and affiliation: Husband learns in kollel and is dayan in Kamada (Satmar affiliation)

WELCOME NEIGHBOR By Chany Rosengarten

WHAT MADE YOU MOVE? We were living in a cozy four-room apartment, when my grandmother passed away. We were offered her Williamsburg projects apartment, as the rent is cheap and my husband is learning. It was a six-room apartment, on the seventh floor. I had three children and although I would eventually grow out of my four rooms, it seemed wise to make the move now, when this bigger apartment became available. But I hated it. My grandmother had spent her last years there, at the time she was deteriorating. The projects were a very unpleasant place to live. Three months later, I was in Monsey. I didn’t know the place, and I knew no one. I didn’t know who the neighbors would be, what type of crowd I’d find, but I was happy to see a group of young chassidish women sitting outside.

48

/ T HE MONS E Y V IE W

ARE YOU RENTING OR DID YOU PURCHASE? The apartment building I’m living in is all rentals, but I’m looking forward to buying a house with a yard. I think it’s good to raise a family in a more private setting. It allows for more connection with the children, it fosters a family identity, and it allows for more oxygen and activity. Mostly, it curbs the excessive social stimulation that children are exposed to. I love it when my children are outside, and I even enjoy schmoozing with the other mothers near the slides. In Williamsburg, we went to the country two months a year, and this lifestyle was limited to those months. The rest of the time, the children were home. I love it that my children get to rough it out in the great outdoors for most of the year, but I like it less that after coming home from a full day of cheder, they still have to manage the social ropes every time they want

Moved from: Williamsburg Years in Monsey: Three and a half to climb or play. My husband grew up in Seagate and spent a lot of time in his family’s ample backyard. It’s one of the things we aspire to have.

HOW DO YOU LIKE THE NEIGHBORHOOD? I love Monsey’s shopping. I appreciate the shopping centers, with everything being under one roof, situated right next to suburban streets. It’s convenient and pleasant. I also love the winter here. In Williamsburg, when the snow fell, all you saw were buildings and smog. Here we have the evergreens topped with white fur, and if I imagine it, I can stop seeing the busy highway right out my window and start seeing only the majesty of winter.

WHAT’S THE MOST DIFFICULT ASPECT OF LIVING HERE? The thing that’s most difficult in this neighborhood is the proximity to the open

CreativityEleganceProfessionalismPersonalized attention

road without being properly gated in. Coming from Williamsburg, I was delighted to let my children roam and explore the greenery outdoors. But when my son wandered all the way to the sidewalk in front of my house, I became embroiled in a long and taxing CPS case. I wasn’t the only one. I am now petitioning for a gate, at the very least around the play area. I encourage others moving to Monsey to look out for a properly gated neighborhood, because young children being open to Monsey’s ever more congested streets is a tragedy waiting to happen. I now know that this is not Williamsburg — the children can be outdoors from April until October — but it’s not the country either.

HOW DO YOU FIND THE SCHOOL SYSTEM? My daughter is doing very well in Satmar, and my boys are in an excellent cheder, Nikolsburg. I’m very happy.

WHAT DID YOU HAVE TO GET USED TO? I used to feel pressure to conform to neighborhood norms, as living in a bungalow colony setting blurred my boundaries. But as I developed a more internal sense of self, I learned I could still retain my values. I relied less on public opinion and got to choose my own standards. In child rearing, lifestyle ,and in purchasing the clothes befitting my family, I saw I can grow at my own pace.

Party Planning for Every Budget and Style

Chany Rosengarten is excited to introduce this new column, where we meet people who have moved to Monsey as recently as yesterday, or as far back as 20 years ago. As a newcomer herself to this diverse and thriving community, she looks forward to featuring your journey of acclimating to our town. IF YOU KNEW EVERYTHING THEN YOU NOW KNOW ABOUT MONSEY, WOULD YOU STILL HAVE MOVED? I love it here. The children are happy, and so are my husband and I. Yet, as prices keep rising unfairly in Monsey, I wonder if, had I moved today, I would have still chosen Monsey over, say, Bloomenberg. The rent is a bit cheaper, but life is not. A year after we moved in, my husband leased a car, because we couldn’t manage without a cam anymore; it’s not like in the city. But with leasing, gas, and insurance, we are near Williamsburg living cost. Add to that the school vouchers that many lose out on by not living in the city, plus tuition, which is at least double the price, and the cost of living here is high. I would still do it, just for the trees, but that’s another consideration.

Meanwhile prepare the lemon glaze by combining eggs, confectioner’s sugar, lemon juice, lemon zest and baking powder in a bowl. Pour over warm cake and return to oven for an additional 25 minutes. 5. Let cool and cut into desired size bars. Sprinkle with confectioner’s sugar.

by Pearl Stauber

Some of my favorite childhood memories are those of long family car trips up to the mountains. Piled into the back of a rusty station wagon, my siblings and I had to sit face-to-face with each other for hours of fun and boredom. When we weren’t bickering or nagging our parents with “Are we there yet? questions, we had some fun road games which we loved to play. We would intently study the license plates of car after car, as they briefly advertised their state or - if we were lucky - foreign country, until they were out of sight. Since those childhood years, license plates have undergone considerable transformations, and perhaps some that are even more dramatic in nature in the years prior. and slotted plates were discontinued in 1918. The first plates were made of sheet iron, but tin became the standard by about 1920. Arizona made their plates from sheet copper from 1932 - 1934.

Timeline:

License plates came into existence in 1903, when the use of automobiles had become the ever popular replacement for horse-drawn carriages and a system for taxing and registering them became necessary. Some states produced slotted front plates, addressing concerns of automobile operators that full plates may block airflow to the car and cause it to overheat. This concern had been debunked,

66

/ THE MONS E Y V IE W

Porcelain plates had also been popular in some states in the early days of license plates.. During WWII, plates were made from soy-based fiberboards, in an effort to preserve all metals towards the war effort. This worked well for its intended purpose, except the plates became a delicacy for goats. Around 1920, the manufacturing of plates was taken to correctional facilities in several states to reduce cost of manufacturing and provide useful work for inmates that would help them acquire important skills for employment in the real world.

In 1923, the states began to require that automobile builders provide lights to illuminate the plates. The reflectorized plate was first issued in Georgia in 1941. Georgia was also the pioneer in the use of decals to update registration information, as opposed to issuing new plates every year. Plate sizes were not standardized until 1957, when the dimension of 6x12 inches was selected.

Vanity and Specialty Plates:

Personalized plates, also called vanity, custom or prestige plates have become increasingly popular over the past three decades, and its popularity continues to soar, despite the additional cost to the vehicle owner. In California, the revenue from personalized plates is dedicated to environmental projects, giving them the name Environmental License Plates (ELPs).

Specialty plates are another category that has become popular. These plates recognize university graduates, recipients of National Honors, such as Purple Heart and the Congressional Medal of Honor, war veterans, and plates dedicated to special causes, such as the Astronauts Memorial, commemorating the Challenger Space Shuttle disaster. The list of specialty plates changes every year according to demand.

Fun Plate Facts:

31 of 51 U.S. jurisdictions (including Puerto Rico) require two plates per vehicle - one on the front and one on the rear. However, single plates - located on the rear of the vehicle, are likely to become more widely enforced to reduce manufacturing costs. Commercial plates have codes and colors that differ from passenger plates, and change more frequently, to differentiate between tax rates for commercial and passenger vehicles. The sequence of alphanumeric characters on a license plate provides important information to law enforcement personnel, who are trained to decode them. It typically provides information about the vehicle and its owner. States constantly change the appearance of their plates. A lot of thought goes into the design of plates to appeal to tourists. Currently, the three oldest plate designs in use are that of Delaware (in production since 1959), Colorado (since 1960), and Minnesota (since 1978).

Some license plates have special markings to indicate status of the vehicle owner, such as doctors, EMTs, handicapped, government vehicles, etc. USPS trucks do not have license plates. Steve Jobs, co-founder of Apple, never had any license plates on his silver Mercedes SL55AMG. It is unclear why he did not want to put plates on his vehicle. He was able to get away with it via a loophole in the California law, which states that when a new license plate number is issued, the vehicle owner has 6 months to put the plates on the car. His wealth allowed him to change cars every 6 months, and he always bought a new model Mercedes SL55AMG. In 1979, a man from California filled out a DMV form requesting vanity plates. He gave the DMV three options: • SAILING • BOATING • NO PLATE The third option meant that if he couldn’t get either of the first two, he did not want personalized plates at all. The DMV employees who processed the application misunderstood and issued plates with the words “NO PLATE” written on them. About a month later, this man received numerous parking tickets in the mail, about 2,500 in total, many from states he has never been to. He alerted the DMV and responded to each citation with a form letter. The explanation he received was that the words “NO PLATE” was used by law enforcement agencies when citing a vehicle without plates. Similar cases were reported by owners of plates reading “MISSING,” “NONE,” “VOID,” “XXXXXXX,” and “NOTAG” among others.

Shopping for your home can be fun and inspiring! Inspiration for design can come from anywhere. It can be a bold graphic pattern on a throw pillow or a sofa in your favorite shade and perfect orientation. Maybe it's a striking piece of art or a sculptural object; pieces like thesecan be the foundation of a scheme or the impetus of your own style. Which pieces do you gravitate to? Do you like warm, cool, bold or neutral? A palette of soft colors or a cacophony of an eclectic mix? Luxurious fabrics such as silk or velvet or abstract and geometric patterns? The most important step for decorating your home is defining your style. It is a mandatory starting point when embarking on a project with all my clients! As an interior designer, I'm so often faced with clients who don'tknow where to start. I find that nearly everyone's style falls into four categories: Traditional, Modern, Transitional and Rustic. And of course, subcategories from there...which means a mix of styles! Once you've determined your style, it is a whole lot easier to start the process. I've put together a visual language of style in the hopes that you'll achieve true style clarity. Most people can't decorate their house in one fell swoop! Remember, be true to yourself and your style, and you'll create a home that's beautiful and truly yours.

What Do I Do If My Child “Just Can’t Memorize” With school starting so close to Yom Tov, it may still be a little early for this topic. It usually takes a test or two for mothers of preteens and teens to hear the classic refrain, “Moooommy. I’m teeeerrible at memorizing. . . I’m failing this test.” On the second thought, what could be better than taking advance measures to avoid problems before they occur? Let’s examine what memory is all about and explore some fun, concrete ways to spruce up your child’s memory, before it’s put to the test. Memory Works We are all forgetful at times. Have you forgotten any of these lately; your cellphone, the car keys, baby’s bottle? You’re in good company. On the flip side, each of us also has areas where our memory seems to function just fine. I usually remember faces of people I’ve come in contact with. (Then, when I don’t remember names or where we met, it gets pretty awkward!) There’s the fellow at the register in my local grocery that remembers hundreds of customers’ telephone numbers and my amazingly musical friend who can identify a song from two or three introductory notes. If memory were one defined entity, like a huge safe deposit box in a specific area in our brains, then we wouldn’t be blamed for thinking that either it works or it’s broken. Memory however, is not a simple, isolated task. It is a complex function with many subtasks, which uses

74

/ THE MO NS E Y V IE W

multiple areas of our brain simultaneously. Memory can’t be classified into ‘good’ or ‘bad’. Each individual has a different profile of memory strengths and weakness. A child may have a hard time recalling facts (semantic memory), but a phenomenal memory for the smallest details of an interesting experience like a trip to the park (episodic memory). It may be hard for a child to remember things she hears, like a series of directions, (short term auditory memory) but the child could be great at recalling things she sees, (visual memory) like the shapes of states on a map. Helping our children memorize starts with analyzing just what our children’s strengths and weaknesses are, pointing out those strengths so that they realize that their memory is not ‘bad’ and then using the strengths to compensate for the weaknesses.

Memory Laps The good news is that memory, even the weakest parts of one’s memory, can be improved. Just like a runner builds muscle and speed each time he does laps, the nerve pathways for memory build ease and speed just by being used And the best part – it can be fun! Here are three of my favorite, family friendly ‘memory laps’, but there are many more out there and you can even make up some of your own. What’s Different? This popular game is great for building visual memory; the ability to hold a picture in one’s memory. A child is chosen to be ‘it’ and everyone takes a moment to look her up and down. Then the child leaves the room and changes one detail about herself i.e. takes off an earring or changes her hairstyle. When she comes back into the room, the first person to notice what was changed is the next one to be ‘it.’ Add a twist to the game by having the children observe other things, such as the dinner table or items in a pencil case and then say what is missing or changed. During the game be the ‘memory coach.’ Give tips and suggestion about how to remember visual details. “Observe Chavy closely. Notice all the little things about her. Start from the top and go down. How is she wearing her hair? Is her top button open or closed? What outfit is she wearing? Is she

wearing any accessories . . . Now close your eyes and pretend to see a picture of her in your mind. Hold that picture there so that you can compare it when Chavy comes back in.” I Went to the Store and Bought. . . Another classic, this is great for increasing shortterm memory. Play goes around the table with each child getting a chance to say what ‘I went to the store and bought’ adding an item in alphabetical order. The catch is that child may only add an item to the list once she’s stated all of the previous items mentioned by other players, in proper sequence. Again, use the opportunity to help your child acquire memory strategies by demonstrating some out loud. Simon Games Easily obtainable in local toy stores, these electronic games are great for working on short-term memory and they have tremendous appeal. Your kids won’t even realize they’re doing something educational! Simple memory challenges, like who could remember the longest string of numbers could become a fun game when played in the car with the entire family. And don’t forget the classic Game of Memory. Learning to Remember The first step to ensuring that we remember what we

learn is to learn it in such a way that lends itself to remembering. Scott Young, an entrepreneur in his 20s taught himself advanced college courses in a quarter of the time it takes college students to complete them and he passed the course tests. He claims that in order to remember educational material one doesn’t need a good memory. One needs to learn it well. And by learning it well he means learning it deeply, really engaging with the material and understanding it. Often, in my practice, when I encounter children who have difficulty memorizing I find that they are learning the material inefficiently to begin with. I explain it to them this way. When someone sits in class and listens to what the teacher is teaching, it’s as though the student is holding a cup and the teacher is pouring in the water. Did the water become part of the child? No. Did it hydrate and refresh the child? No. That can only happen if she drinks the water. If the water becomes a part of her. In order for the child to remember what the teacher teaches, the student needs to drink the material, interact with the material, and make it a part of her. Active learning While this may seem to be the responsibility of the teacher, a child can be taught to take a more active role in the learning process

T H E M O N SE Y V I E W /

75

EDUCATIONAL

no matter what kind of teacher or classroom she’s in. Participating and asking questions makes the child a more active learner. A big part of this process happens in the head. It’s simply about the way the child thinks about the material (see sidebar). A child can also use the margin of her notes or a small scrap to put this kind of thinking onto paper. Modality Information enters our brain through all of our senses, taste, touch (tactile), sight (visual) hearing (auditory), smell as well as through movement (kinesthetic). Often, one of these pathways is much more efficient for a child than the others. Most of the information a child receives in the classroom is sent along the auditory pathway. If a child has a hard time learning information she heard (short term auditory memory) the other modalities must be made available for her in order to be able ‘drink’ the information. Studying To Remember What do you do when you want to remember a telephone number and you don’t have a pen? Do you repeat it over and over ‘til you dial it? Do you give yourself hints? When children study information, many of them tend to take information that

76

/ T HE MO NS E Y V IE W

they haven’t really mastered and just repeat it over and over. Repetition may be a good way to remember information for a couple of minutes but it is not a good way to retain information over time, like for a test the next day. (Done strategically however, at properly spaced intervals, it can be a very powerful technique.) Recently my 10-year-old was trying to memorize which shevatim stood on Har Grizim and which stood on Har Eivel. Repeating the shevatim over and over was becoming a taxing and confusing task. I suggested that she take the initial letters of each group of shevatim and form a creative acronym with it, which she did. Presto! She had the material memorized in moments. It’s not about how long you study, or how many times you repeat the information that helps your remember it, it’s about studying and memorizing effectively. One of my children recently complained, “Mommy, everyone in my class’s mothers give them prizes when they get good marks on their tests. You never do.” (I love being compared to Everyone. Don’t you?) I thought about it and answered, “Sweetie, I’m willing to give you a prize if you study well and tell me which strategies you used to study well. That matters more to me than your mark.”

Below I’ve listed some of my favorite, study/memory techniques. Introduce them to your child slowly, with time in between to really master them. Try to match the technique to your child’s learning style and preferences and don’t give up if the first one doesn’t work for her. There are many ideas out there and if you search you’re bound to find something that’ll do the trick to help learning stick. A learning specialist or educational consultant can also advise you regarding your child’s specific memory needs and give you some ideas tailor-made for your child. Acronyms Acronyms, the age-old memory technique, (think d’tzach adash b’achav) and it still fantastically effective. The creative process of trying to see a word in a whole bunch of random letters can also be great fun. Visualization Take a familiar area in the house that the child can envision with her eyes closed, such as the kitchen. Then use post-its to hang up the facts that need to be memorized on prominent areas of the kitchen, such as the fridge, the stove etc. Have the child look at each one in turn and then close her eyes to envision it in her with the post-it. Have her point to the post-it as she closes her

eyes and says the facts. Then have her take a mental walk around the kitchen pointing and saying the facts. Hints a.ka. Humorous Associations This technique works because it is based on making connections, a crucial key to memory, as well as the novelty factor. The memory hooks onto things that are new, novel, funny, strange and different. In this case, the wackier the connection the better. We used the technique last year when my daughter had a hard time remembering who sold the Mearas Hamachpeila to Avraham Avinu. I told my daughter “Let’s think of a hint.” We looked at the name Ephron Hachiti and decided that Ephron looked like the Hebrew word Iparon, pencil and Chiti like Chita, wheat. We then proceeded to make up a silly story about why Ephron needed a pencil and wheat to sell the Mearas Hamachpela. There was lots of giggling to go around and it worked! Now when I say, “Let’s think of a hint,” my kids are eager for the fun to begin. Sorting Finding a household item, say a pen, is a simple task when a drawer is sorted and organized and a monumental task when it is messy. Sorting and categorizing helps the brain store information in

an organized manner, which makes it easier to retrieve. While one can sort and categorize just by thinking or asking questions, why not add the tactile dimension to it by using cards and physically sorting the information. Cut a piece of hard paper into small cards approximate 1” by 1 ½” and have the child write the facts onto the cards. Then mix them up and have the child sort them into the proper categories or pairs. You can then use the cards as flashcards (flash one at the child and the child has to say the pair or more in the category) or to play Memory (the child turns them over and finds the pair or more in the category). Rhymes and Songs The mind gravitates to patterns and rhythm. Music, especially, has amazing recall power. Setting information to rhymes or song can go a long way to help children remember. That’s one of the reasons why the multiplication tables are so often set to rhymes and songs.

A gemar chasima tova to all of you. May Hashem remember us all for life and inscribe all of klal yisroel in the Book of Life.

Be an Active Learner: Think to Drink! Introduce these questions to children one at a time and give them ample opportunity for practice before expecting them to transfer their new habits to the classroom.

1. Does what my teacher just said make sense to me?

2. If not, which part don’t I understand?

3. How can I restate what my teacher said in my own (simple) words?

4. What’s the main thing my teacher is saying?

5. What point is my teacher trying to make?

6. Can I see a picture in my mind of what the teacher is saying?

7. What does this remind me of? 8. Did something like this ever happen to me?

9. Did something like this ever happen to someone else I know?

10. Does this remind me of something we learned earlier in the lesson?

11. Does this remind me of something I learned in another lesson?

12. Does this remind me of something I learned last year?

13. What do I think the teacher will say next?

MONSEYREBRANDED The Rebrand Series of Checklists

> The personality and attitude. > The Copy > The Color > The Font

This is the third article in The Rebrand series of checklists. The previous two focused on the personality and message of the brand. One of the first questions children as young as three will answer to is, “What is you favorite color?”

consumers. In a survey, 93% of participants said that they buy according to the visual properties of a product or advertisement. And ads that were in color were read 42% more than black and white ads.

Our world is a rainbow of color, millions of shades and hues. Yet the first way we learn as children to group together is by color, rather than shape, texture, or function.

Color has the power to affect the moods and emotions of people. (see figure 1) And people’s favorite colors will often reflect their true disposition. Here’s why it’s important to remember that your brand is like a person, with its own personality. Which color best reflects its character?

Color is so iconic. We often paint memories in color or envision things in specific tones. More than logos or fonts, color is what etches in the mind of (I’m listing this first, because in a study between conducted on a group of men and women, both gender groups reported blue being their favorite color. Between blue’s favoritism and its strong psychological appeal, blue is the most widely used color in branding.)

WHY MAINTAINING YOUR HOUSE SHOULD BE YOUR PRIORITY by Ann Zeilingold

One of the benefits of homeownership is the equity in your house. If a home is NOT maintained, you are allowing your home to age faster than it should, thereby losing equity. Here’s a simple maintenance strategy to keep your home young.

of it, here’s the simplest way to keep your home in good health.

protect its value. It’ll also help you prioritize what you need to do. Here’s how:

FOCUS ON YOUR HOME’S #1 ENEMY.

FOLLOW THIS EASY 4-STEP ROUTINE

If you focus on nothing else, focus on moisture - your home’s #1 enemy.

An out-of-shape house is older than its years and could lose 10% of its appraised value, says Bruce Potash, an appraiser in Warwick, NY. That’s a $15,000, to $20,000 adjustment for the average home in the USA.

1. When it rains, actively pay attention. Are your gutters overflowing? Is water fl o w i n g away from your house like it should? Is water c o m i n g inside?

An out-of-shape house is older than its years and could lose 10% of its appraised value, but good maintenance can even add value.

But good maintenance can even add value. A study done in the University of Connecticut and Syracuse University showed that regular maintenance increases the value of a home by about 1% each year.

Water can destroy the integrity of your foundation, roof, walls, and floors — your home’s entire structure. So a leaky gutter isn’t just annoying; it’s compromising your foundation.

So if you’ve been deferring maintenance, or just need a good strategy to stay on top

Keeping moisture at bay will improve your home’s effective age, “real age,” and

2. After h e a v y rains and storms, do a quick inspection of your roof, siding, foundation, windows, doors, ceilings, and basement to spot any damage or leaks. 3. Use daylight savings days, or the Yom Tov of Sukkos and Pesach as a reminder bi-annually to check and test water-related

RE ALE STATE appliances like your washer, refrigerator, water heater, HVAC (condensation in your HVAC can cause leaks), and sump pump. It’s also a great time to do regular maintenance on them. Inspect any outdoor spigots and watering systems for leaks, too. 4. Repair any damage and address any issues and leaks ASAP. Don’t procrastinate when you spot minor leaks or drips inside your house. Ongoing small leaks can slowly erode pipes and fixtures, and even cause mold and mildew issues that you won’t notice until it’s too late. Say you’ve got a bit of cracked caulk around the kitchen window. It may not seem like much, but behind that caulk, water could get into your sheathing, causing mold damage and rot. Before you know it, you’re looking at a $5,000 repair that could have been prevented by a $4 tube of caulk and a half hour of your time. Once you settle into a routine, it becomes easier to handle other maintenance tasks, which will only do more to protect and enhance your home’s value. Plus, you’ll get to know your home better, which will help you spot other one-off problems,

such as termites and other wood destroying insects that cause costly damage. After closing on your home, sometimes there is no money left. The monthly payment is high and the thought of a fund for repairs is the farthest from your mind. Despite this, try to put something away monthly for repairs and maintenance. Regular maintenance and deferred repairs are not covered by insurance. I have a client who went up to the country for the summer. The husband was home during the week. When they came back at the end of the summer, they discovered that the main first floor bathroom tub walls were soft, and upon touching them, they collapsed. Since the husband hadn’t used that bathroom, nor the second floor bathroom which was right above it, he hadn’t realized that the faucet on the second floor had not been

turned off completely and it had been dripping for the two months. It had dripped into the wall, traveled downstairs to the first floor and to the basement. Mold developed and the home was not livable since some of the kids had asthma and were very sensitive to mold. The repair and mold remediation from this one unmaintained leak was over $100,000. The insurance company denied the claim because it was deemed negligence on the part of the homeowner. After two years of fighting, they still did not receive any insurance money and they have to find a way to repair the home on their own. The lesson is: be aware and be mindful. A well maintained home will last longer and eventually sell higher.
