Thanks for a wonderful publication that makes us Brooklyn olim to Monsey get a feel of the MISHLOACH MANOS place we moved to. THAT MAKE THE While reading about GRADE the shalach manos to teachers, I was surprised to see that a teacher of 150 students a year never got a note of gratitude. Wow, I thought to myself. There's so much talk about gratitude in our lives as Yidden, and more recently I've heard about many schools that have gratitude programs to teach their girls to open their eyes to all the good they get. How is it possible that this teacher was never acknowledged? Maybe she should role-play and teach her students how to write a note of thanks on their exam papers. Thanks to all the wonderful people who give up so much of themselves for our children! A Reader SENDING MISHLOACH MANOS to your child’s teacher is a way to show your appreciation, but if your child has numerous teachers, or if you have numerous children, it can be both costly and time-consuming on one of the busiest days on the Jewish calendar. The Monsey View polled both parents and teachers about their preferences for giving and receiving mishloach manos, respectively. Their names have been changed in keeping with the Purim incognito spirit! “When my own kids were little, it was not taken for granted that kids would bring mishloach manos to every teacher,” says Malka. “We walked or drove to deliver them to those who lived close enough, and I often sent them to school when we couldn’t go on Purim. As a grandparent, I find my kids in Lakewood are so busy with running to every teacher and rebbi, to the point where it becomes difficult to do anything else. Yes, going to the

teacher is important, but I do feel it is out of hand when the teacher trumps grandparents.” To beat the Purim rush, Hinda says, “I give mishloach manos to all teachers usually before Purim. I like to give a useful gift along with it — such as a salad bowl or CD — and, of course, a meaningful note.” Miriam concurs with Hinda. “I try to give mishloach manos to all the main teachers before Purim. We are not

meant to be in the car all day on Purim. If there is an organized effort, I join and am very thankful.”

Mishloach Manos with Class… or Without Every year, the parents in Devorah’s children’s classes arrange mishloach manos-giving differently. “We either pitch in for a collective one or we give it to the teachers separately. But I find it rather awkward to give one big one from the class because come Purim, my kids are dying to go to their teachers to show off their costumes, and it’s daft to come empty-handed. We’ve already spent money on their mishloach manos, so to go and buy just another box of chocolates for each teacher is a bit costly. I don’t know how to avoid that.” According to Rochel, chocolates

ON SIMCHA AND SAFETY Dear Parents, Before Purim, please discuss the matter of drinking with your older sons. I’ve recently heard of four young men who died after drinking too much liquor. Don’t let this be your child. Drinking looks innocent at first. After one cup of wine, a person becomes carefree and happy. A second cup, and they become loud and a M&S SHOE REPAIR

HELP ME RIGHT A WRONG I backed my car into someone else’s this past Motzei Shabbos Parshas Zachor at the corner of Route 306 and Phyllis Terrace. I would appreciate if the person whose car I backed into would call (or text) me at 908-505-2611 and leave a message so that I can contact him. I also kindly request that he leave some details of the incident so that I can know that it’s the right person and not some prankster. Thank you, Name Withheld

RE: IN SEARCH OF A CURE (ISSUE 136) Dear Concerned Consumer, I’d like to comment on the letter about the homeopathic remedy. First, a couple of weeks ago, when I called a health food store to order this product, they were quick to inform me that it is treif and that I should consult with a rav before using it. Second, there is a kosher version of this product called Flu Relief (main ingredient: oscillococcinum) from the company Re-leaf. I purchased it at Healthway in Monroe, and they delivered it to Monsey. Name Withheld

THE INSIDE NUTRITION BY TANYA:

EDITION CHAPTER 27

By: Basya Kovacs

ALTHOUGH PURIM IS ONLY ONE day long, many dieters or people who are just careful with their intake during the year have a hard time on this day. Here we’ve compiled a list of tips to help you get through it successfully: MISHLOACH MANOS: If you receive mishloach manos that contains chips, sugary snacks and/or commercialised juices, either re-gift it or donate the items to people in need. Do not see it as an excuse to consume any of these items as it will probably not end with “just one”; there will be many more, and once you start eating you will likely crave sugar and have a hard time stopping. Clear treats and snacks away as soon as they enter your home rather than leaving them around on the dining room table. PLANNING THE MENU: If you are hosting a party, there is nothing wrong with providing your guests with healthy choices. Try serving freshly squeezed juices instead of soda, whole wheat dinner rolls instead of regular ones, oven-cooked chicken instead of fried chicken and dressing on the side for the freshly prepared salads. PARTIES NOT HOSTED BY YOU: If you are going to a party hosted by your neighbor, friend or even at your local shul, try your best to find out what is going to be served and prepare accordingly. If the choices will not be the best, try eating at home so you won’t eat as much when you get to the party. You can also try bringing some healthy snacks with you, such as a TAP

50 / THE MONSEY VIEW / February 28, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

cookie or some almonds, so you don’t feel deprived. WINE AND DRINKING: Purim is the holiday of drinking wine, but be mindful of how much alcohol you are consuming. Just 4 ounces of red wine has 100 calories. Imagine: Just by drinking three cups (8 ounces each), you will be consuming 600 calories from wine alone! HAMANTASHEN: I realize that hamantaschen are traditional Purim treats, but that doesn’t mean you have to consume dozens of them. One or two will satisfy your taste buds without contributing too many calories. I suggest consuming them late in the day so you don't spend the whole day craving them.

Keep in mind that Purim is only one day long. Remind yourself that dieting won’t be this difficult all the time, and that you can do anything for a short while, including exercising self-control. Keep strong for 24 hours, get rid of the remaining temptations as quickly as possible, and when you look back on Shushan Purim, you will be proud of yourself! “A SHIUR? UM, NO THANK YOU,” Dahlia spoke into the phone. “Thanks for thinking of me, though. Sure, I’ll call you sometime. Okay, all the best, kol tuv.” Dahlia hung up with a sigh. In the next room, Dahlia’s Aunt Leah looked dismayed. “Chavy, how long has Dahlia been acting this way? I’ve never known her to turn down the opportunity to go to a shiur,” asked Aunt Leah. “It’s not only shiurim, Leah; she’s lost interest in everything. First she started spending less time shopping or with friends. Then she was saying less and less Tehillim, until she stopped altogether, as far as I know. Now it’s shiurim. I’m concerned, of course, but I think it’s perfectly natural. I mean, all she’s ever wanted to do was get married and build a family. It’s been extremely painful for her to have to wait so many years.” “Yes, Dahlia was a little mommy from an early age, always with her doll either in her arms or in the toy stroller,” reminisced Aunt Leah. “Yes, she was,” Chavy said, “and I understand that the uncertainty of waiting to get married is weighing on her, but why does she have to drop the very things that are helping her stand out in shidduchim? She came home from seminary on fire — she was attending shiurim, davening, saying Tehillim, getting involved in chesed opportunities... you name it. How could a girl who had been to Eretz Yisroel and learned from the best drop it all so quickly when the first nisayon came along?” “Let me talk to her, Chavy,” said Aunt Leah. “I think I can reach her.” “Talk to her? What is there to say? I mean, unless you have a shidduch suggestion, I don’t see how talking can help her.” “Dahlia has every right to feel disappointed and hurt that her bashert has not yet come along. When I got married, I didn’t have to wait half as long as she’s been waiting with no end yet in sight. But I did wait almost six years to have children. I know what she’s going through to an extent.” “We cannot compare one to the other,” said Chavy. “Without getting married, Dahlia is also waiting to have children, but she waits alone. If you want to try and give

56 / THE MONSEY VIEW

her chizzuk, be my guest, but I don’t think she’ll be very receptive.” “It’s not the pain of her situation that I want to discuss with her, and it’s not about whether her pain is the same or bigger or smaller than mine was. It’s about what she is doing with her pain — or rather, what she is allowing her pain to do to her.” Chavy looked concerned. “What is she allowing her pain to do to her?” “When I was still waiting to have my first child, Rebbetzin Berkowitz called and invited me over to her house. She spoke with me for a long time. Like Dahlia, I had been losing interest in many things. I even stopped going to shul, which was something that was very special to me. But Rebbetzin Berkowitz taught me a very powerful lesson from this week’s parsha, which contains a puzzling and tragic event in our nation’s history: the Cheit Ha’egel. Just as you asked how Dahlia could so quickly succumb to her first big nisayon after learning in Eretz Yisroel under the greatest of teachers, Rebbetzin Berkowitz said that many have asked how it could be possible for a people to do such a big aveirah after not only experiencing Yetzias Mitzrayim, but right after hearing Hashem speak.” “Nu, how?” Chavy waited expectantly for the answer. This was something that had always troubled her as well, and she was eager to hear what Rebbetzin Berkowitz had said on the matter. “Rebbetzin Berkowitz explained that the Satan showed the Bnei Yisroel an image of Moshe Rabbeinu dead. The Bnei Yisroel had come to depend upon Moshe Rabbeinu, not only for his leadership, but also for his role as an intermediary between them and Hashem. When they thought they had lost their beloved leader, they began to despair and feel hopeless. When a person feels hopeless, they can chalilah fall to the lowest levels. As understandable as the pain is, it’s important to work on oneself not to give up when things don’t go the way we expect.” “That was beautiful Leah, and it for sure helped me. Go ahead and tell Dahlia.” “That’s okay, Ma, I already heard.” Dahlia smiled from the doorway. “But I hope you don’t mind if I can’t stay to discuss it. If I don’t leave now, I’ll be late to the shiur.”

Senator Asks O&R to Review Latest Bills for Mistakes RESPONDING TO CONSTITUENTS who were stunned by their most recent heating bills, State Senator David Carlucci has called upon the utility company to review its most latest bills, which in some cases were approximately $200 more than anticipated. The Journal News reported that a letter sent by Carlucci to Orange and Rockland CEO Robert Sanchez on February 16 took the utility company to task for the “sudden and dramatic bills.” Carlucci also noted that consumers received no warning of an impending jump in their monthly energy costs, and that while higher bills are not unexpected in the winter, the most recent bills issued were “not reasonable.” O&R spokesperson Michael Donovan acknowledged that the average temperature during the billing period in question, December 21, 2017, through January 21, 2018, was just 25 degrees, compared with 36 degree av-

erage temperatures over the same period just one year earlier. The prolonged period of extreme cold translated into escalating utility prices, explained Donovan. “The month-long deep freeze from mid-December to mid-January hit the eastern U.S. hard and led to significantly higher energy usage by O&R customers, and that higher usage created higher energy supply prices than expected for that period,” said Donovan. The early January record cold snap also brought with it historic usage levels for O&R. Donovan noted that in many instances, home heating systems ran around the clock just to maintain thermostat settings. Customers who have difficulty paying their bills because of emergency financial situations can call the utility to see if they can take advantage of O&R’s Neighbor Fund at 1-877-434-4100.

Pothole Reimbursement May Be Just a Phone Call Away LIKE SNOW DAYS AND FRIGID TEMPERATURES, potholes are a fact of life come winter, but if your vehicle was damaged by one of those yawning black chasms, you may be eligible for reimbursement. The Journal News advises drivers to first check with their insurers to see if they are covered for pothole damage, and if not, to determine ownership of the road where the incident took place. While most main roads in local areas are state-owned, smaller ones may be owned by a municipality, the county or the state, and your best bet is to call a local official to help you identify the responsible party. Incidents occurring on highways need to be resolved either with the New York State Department of Transportation or the New York State Thruway Authority. In most cases, damages will only be paid if the responsible agency has been previously notified of a particular pothole’s existence, with a $5,000 maximum in reimbursements for potholes that are located on state roads. Drivers are also encouraged to take pictures of the pothole if they can do so safely, file a police report and get

62 / THE MONSEY VIEW / February 28, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

written repair estimates from two reputable mechanics. To file a claim for damage sustained on state roads, contact the Department of Transportation at 845-4315921 or the Thruway Authority at 518-436-2981. To file a claims for damages on local roads, contact the local government’s clerk or highway department.

HALACHOS AND MINHAGIM OF PURIM BY: REBBETZIN Y. WEISSMANDL

MACHATZIS HASHEKEL • It is a minhag al pi halacha for every man to give a minimum of three coins to tzedakah before Mincha on Erev Purim as a zecher of the machatzis hashekel that was given at the time of the Beis Hamikdash. Preferably, the coin should be named as half of a currency, i.e., a half dollar. • The minhag is to give a half shekel for each family member, including small children. • There are some who are noheg to donate machatzis hashekel again on Purim morning before davening.

THE FOUR MITZVOS There are four mitzvos of Purim: 1. Hearing the Megillah 2. Matanos l’evyonim (giving gifts of money to the poor) 3. Mishloach manos 4. Eating the Purim seudah

HEARING THE MEGILLAH • Hearing the Megillah is the primary mitzvah of the day. The Megillah is read twice, once on the first night of Purim and once in the morning. Care should be taken not to miss hearing even one letter of the Megillah. If one is afraid of not hearing every word, one can quietly mouth the words along with the baal koreh. • If one misses a word when mouthing along, one should continue mouthing the words until he or she catches up to the baal koreh. • Before leining the Megillah, the baal koreh says three brachos: 1. Al Mikrah Megillah 2. She’asah Nissim 3. Shehecheyanu • All three brachos are said before both the evening and morning readings. • When saying the brachos, the baal koreh and the listeners must stand. The listeners may be seated during the leining itself. • In the morning, during the bracha of Shehecheyanu, one should have in mind to be mekayim the mitzvos of the day: matanos l’evyonim, mishloach manos and eating the Purim seudah. • A woman who cannot attend shul should make sure to have someone who knows how to lein properly, in accordance with halacha, lein for her.

68 / THE MONSEY VIEW

MISHLOACH MANOS • Women are mechuyav in the mitzvah of mishloach manos, which is performed by giving two kinds of ready-to-eat foods to at least one woman. One is not yotzei with giving mishloach manos before the morning reading of the Megillah. • One should not send mishloach manos to an ovel (mourner) r”l, but may send to the family of an mourner. • An ovel is mechuyav to send mishloach manos to at least one person and is allowed to send to the important people to whom he or she would usually send. • A woman is not permitted to send mishloach manos to a man. Likewise, a man is not permitted to send mishloach manos to a woman.

MATANOS L’EVYONIM • One must give money to two poor people. The mitzvah is to give to the aniyim (poor people) of one’s own town. (i.e., Kupath Ezra). The money must be handed over to the aniyim on Purim day. • One may give matanos l’evyonim to a needy ovel with no limitations due to his aveilus. Likewise, an ovel may give matanos l’evyonim with no limitations. • It is better to donate more to the poor than have an elaborate Purim feast or send expensive gifts of food to friends.

THE PURIM SEUDAH • It is a chiyuv to eat a seudah on Purim. The minhag is to eat a second seudah that extends into the night.

AL HANISSIM • We say Al Hanissim in Shemoneh Esrei in the evening, morning and afternoon of Purim. • If one forgets to say Al Hanissim in its proper sequence, and then realizes that he forgot, he must go back and say it as long as he has not already pronounced the shem Hashem at the end of the bracha of “Hatov shimcha no’eh l’hodos.” After that point in the tefillah, he should not return to it, but rather say it before “Elokai netzor leshoni.” • During bentching, Al Hanissim should be recited before the words “Ve’al hakol.” If one forgets to say it there, and if one has already pronounced the shem Hashem, one should not return to it. However, before the words “Harachaman Hu yezakeinu,” one should say: “‫הרחמן הוא יעשה לנו ניסים ונפלאות כמו שעשה לאבותינו בימים ההם בזמן הזה בימי מרדכי ואסתר‬.”

YEARS AGO — quite a few years ago, actually — I dressed up on Purim as a merry little princess. All frills and lace and lopsided lipstick, but my smile was real and glorious. When I had three girls of my own and they begged to dress up as princesses, I couldn’t do it. I needed to be original! I needed matching mishloach manos and a theme. And so, I take this public forum to apologize to my girls. You will always be my princesses. Along the way of beautifying this heilige day, I somehow got lost in the trivial. One year I gave in and dressed them as glowing kallahs. They had real gowns. Professional updos. A limo. The works. I look back at the photos and realize that I took the essence of a kids’ yom tov and made it into something of a novelty. Sorry, girls. I will make it up to you on your chasunah day and let you choose the gown you want. Though this year I’m still guilty of planning an original theme, at the risk of sounding cliche, I think I’ll eventually be giving it up and focusing on the areas of

Purim I’ve long missed. If you’ll ever see a simple kallah and a princess and a rebbe and a clown walking together, you’ll know I did it. I achieved the epitome of a pressure-free Purim. Next year, bli neder. Remind me. I grew up in Monsey, but we all know that the real action on Purim was in Williamsburg and Boro Park in those days. The streets packed with 400 clowns, each one sprouting a different red nose, and 800 Mordechais running along on a sugar high was something of a novelty in the suburbs. By the time I got married, the tides, I mean streets, were slowly changing on Purim here. While the streets were still hopping in the city (well, it is the city!), I didn’t feel the need to travel in anymore. Monsey had come a long way, and everyone loved it! The music was everywhere! Route 59, Francis, Rita, Suzanne, Route 306... Bochurim were dancing on almost every street! The air was infused with joy and achdus. The spirit was high and it felt amazingly real. Like the alter heim. Okay, I wasn’t

a princess enough years ago to know what that felt like, but it was so leibedig and so, so special. The feeling of a genuine Purim was felt throughout my beloved town. The rush to get through the traffic to deliver mishloach manos and the rush to get back home so we won’t miss anyone coming to our house made me feel a little breathless on this great day. As did the pressure of the costumes staying just so. And gevald when even a stitch came undone, and the horror when a single sour ball somehow got lost in the perfectly themed mishloach manos that took hours to wrap! And there was no way to adjust that lonely sourball, because the cellophane paper was 8 feet long, held down by 19 feet of tape. And even when it was 29 degrees outside and snowing, coats were not mandatory on Purim because how can those incredible costume be covered up in layers of

Interestingly enough, however, the past few years I’ve missed that spirit. Has something in Monsey shifted? Granted, we have some vans with music blasting, and did I mention horns beeping all day? Monsey has grown so much, it’s practically the city already. Let’s make it just as leibedig! The last time I felt a rush of emotional achdus was when R’ Rubashkin came home. was surreal. It was magic. That’s when it suddenly dawned on me that this is how we, as Yidden, need to celebrate when a miracle occurs. By coming together. And what greater miracle than Purim? This is the way they must’ve danced when Haman was hanging in the air and Mordechai Hatzaddik was wearing his malchus’dig clothing after fasting and davening. Well, minus the cellphones. And cars. And a bunch of other stuff they didn’t have back then. But the joy! The unity! It was absolutely incredible. I was there — I

know. Let’s bring it back! Let’s make it genuine again! Baruch Hashem, the insides of our homes are filled with laughter and wine and delicious food. No, not marzipans (though I haven’t seen them in ages) or anything blue or red. I mean actual food. So let’s spread the kedushah through singing and dancing and music! Let’s spread some decorations outside! They don’t have to be fancy and can be something you have at home. Let the kids run around the house and come up with the zanniest things to hang up. Throw confetti on your grass to dress it up, hang any old sheitel or mask from your Purim box, and so on. These will put anyone in Purim zone. It’s a mitzvah to be b’simchah on this special day, so go all out! The fun can continue on the vehicles. Whether you drive a minivan, school bus, station wagon (what are those?) or mini Cooper, anything you put onto the hood of your car guarantees someone else smiling. Even a broken piece of furniture with ribbons hanging down and a Simchas Purim sign on it. How priceless is that? Anything goes! And these decorations do not have to be original; we’re counting the effort! All of you with bochurim (and fathers as well!): Dance outside every few hours or so, and see the smiles on the faces of your fellow Monseyites! Nothing invokes the glowing feel of Purim more than seeing grown-ups dancing outside and acknowledging the unbelievable nissim Hashem did for us and is constantly doing! This is what I’m going to contribute to Monsey this year: I will play loud music by a front window so passersby can hear it and sing along; offer prizes for any kids on the block who tell me a nice thing their teacher/rebbi taught them about Purim (no candies — I’m scared of the mothers here); and give extra treats for the boys who dance instead of walking home (maybe along with just a few candies). Remember: Our goal is to spread simchah and make a kiddush Hashem. Give the policeman manning the streets a smile and a hamantasch. Be understanding on the roads and keep the beeping to a minimum. Unless somebody tries to steal the humongous Haman from the hood of your car. Stay calm. Hide the good stuff that comes your way. And wear a mask so nobody sees you eating. Don’t count the Jolly Ranchers in little Devoiry’s mouth, and yes, it looks like 20 pieces because it is. Remember being a princess all those years ago? You can be one now and enjoy the moment. Surrounded by the little grape juice bottles, beam at your little one and taste a Jolly Rancher. It’s sweet. It’s delicious. And when all else fails, dance.

PURIM IS A DAY THAT IS MESUGAL for our tefillos to be answered. All the nissim that happened in the days of Mordechai and Esther came after the Jews increased their fervor and amount of tefillos to Hashem. We celebrate Purim with mishloach manos, seudos and, of course, helping our children dress up. All in all, it becomes a very busy day, and how can young mothers incorporate the all-important davening into this day as well? There are basically two kinds of tefillos that we mothers and grandmothers utter. First there are the “organized” tefillos that the Anshei Knesses Hagedolah composed. These tefillos, with slight variations due to different nuschaos, fill our siddurim. Men over bar mitzvah are obligated to daven three times a day, preferably with a minyan. We ladies, however, are exempt because

94 / THE MONSEY VIEW / February 28, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

we have a different, and perhaps even more lofty, purpose: namely, the care and nurturing of our families. However, despite our not being obligated to daven, and perhaps because it is so, our tefillos are very dear to Hashem. Here’s a typical scenario of a young household on Purim morning: Mommy went to an early minyan to hear the Megillah, Tatty just got home and is getting ready to take the kinderlach to deliver mishloach manos. Mommy is back and putting the finishing touches on the costumes. Finally, Avrumi is satisfied with his crown, Rivka’le agrees that her lipstick is bright enough, and Moshie and Chaim are painting mustaches on each other using Mommy’s best pencil. The mishloach manos are ready (thanks to a certain someone who went to sleep in the

early a.m. hours), and Tatty loads the car. A moment later, everyone except Mommy and the baby are off to do the deliveries. The house is finally quiet, and the baby falls asleep. Now is the perfect time to pick up that siddur! I know what you’ll say: “There are dishes in the sink, and I have to sweep the kitchen floor for the third time today!” But neither the dishes nor the dirt on the floor will run away. Trust me. Just don’t forget to say Al Hanissim in Shemoneh Esrei.

Then there’s the second kind of tefillah, which we mothers utter in the most impromptu manner. Any time, any place, is the right time and place to ask Hashem for anything. You are at the doctor’s office with a feverish child, and the kids’ school bus is coming in twenty minutes. The only way you’ll get home on time is if the taxi comes promptly. You utter a tefillah: “Hashem, please help me get home on time.” Your son is leaving for an important job interview. You wish him hatzlacha, while davening that he find favor in the eyes of the potential employer. You leave the house on a shopping trip and say a tefillah that your time (and money) not be wasted. A piece of fabric at the dressmaker is accompanied by a tefillah that the dress come out good. On Purim, as your sons start out on their “rounds,” you send up a tefillah that they be matzliach in their gathering tzedakah and that they return home safe and at least half sober. Every mother and grandmother was asked more than once, by curious onlookers, “What do you say when you cover your eyes at licht bentchen?” You daven for good children, parnassah, good health, and you “throw in” a good word for whatever pressing matters you are aware of in the lives of your offspring. And yes, you should even daven for a good cleaning lady. There’s a famous story about the Baal Shem Tov’s daughter, the tzadekes Udl, who once complained to her

father that she was having problems with her maid. He admonished her gently and said that she probably did not have the proper kavanos on Rosh Hashanah when davening for a good maid. We mere mortals cannot fathom the greatness and kedusha of the Baal Shem Tov and his daughter, let alone know which kavanos he was talking about. But one thing is certain: If we always keep in mind that it is Hashem Who orchestrates everything in this world, we would come to the realization that not only is there nothing too hard for Him, but nothing is too petty or mundane for us to ask of Him either. We must also remember not to underestimate the value of our tefillos. The first Belzer Rebbe zt”l refused to daven in a shul that did not have an ezras nashim. The tefillos of Yiddishe mammas are very holy and vital to the kedusha of the makom tefillah. The management of the Ponevezh Yeshiva once

met to address the problem of overcrowding in the beis medrash during the Yomim Noraim. Someone came up with the suggestion to send the younger students up to the balcony, thus effectively eliminating the ladies section. The Rosh Yeshivah emphatically refused, saying, “Aren’t you aware that your tefillos go up to Shamayim on the backs of the ladies’ davening?” As for formal tefillah, here are some ideas that you may be able to incorporate into your daily life: Say Birchas Hashachar “inside.” It does not have to be a siddur. There are laminated cards (which look like bentchers) that easily fit into a kitchen drawer. And if your busy lifestyle precludes davening during the week, then at least try to pick up a siddur on Shabbos. And on the rare afternoon, when supper is cooking and the children are actually engrossed in a good game and not fighting, chap arein and daven a Minchah. It’ll be a short break that will give you fuel that will last you for the next few hectic hours. And once the children will be out of the house, iy”H, you will be able to incorporate a full Shacharis into your daily routine. As my mother, a”h, used to say, “Every age has its own compensation.” May Hashem listen to all of our tefillos, however, wherever and whenever they’re said, and may He bentch us all with Yiddishe nachas gezunterheit.

Now that it's over, what do you do? Punish yourself and go on a starvation diet? Go on a 7 day cleanse/juicing diet? Give up dieting because it just isn't worth it? ... The option are endless. The idea of going on a cleanse diet seems logical. Let me clean out all the junk food from my system. Right? Even fasting for the next month till Pesach might sound logical. As logical as it sounds, it probably isn't the best option. When we restrict the amount of food we eat over the day we tend to go through binges and rebounds.

Your left scratching your head trying to figure out what you are doing wrong. The best option for you is to practices 2 skills. Reflection and self-compassion. Reflect back on what happened at the Purim party. What made you overeat so much. Once you realize what happened you can come up with ideas on how to make sure it doesn't happen again. While you are reflecting you need to practice self-compassion. You need to understand that part of being a human is slipping up. There is no person that is 100% perfect. Even if you did consume 10,000 calories over the purim meal. And yes, you did gain 2.86 pounds of fat. By staying the course. Focusing on sticking to the good habits you have been working on. You’ll be back on track in no time.

Sometimes we notice these binges but most times they go undetected. We might use Shabbos as a day to go all out. After all, you deserve to have 5 helpings of every course. You’ve been so good all week. Others might have uncontrollable cravings and proneness to hunger at night. The most frustrating part about this back and forth dance is we only remember how good we have been. We don't remember the binges we had. When it comes to the end of the week and it is time to weigh there is no change. No weight loss.

As we enter the yom tov of giving, many people spend days running around like beheaded chickens. Into one store and out of another, they peruse shelves, aisles and various products hoping for inspiration. Once again, they consult their list, now crumpled beyond repair, of teachers, therapists, babysitters and family members. Much time, effort and money gets invested when finding the perfect gift, often resulting in so much pressure and anxiety. And so, to make gift-giving the pleasurable experience that it’s meant to be, we bring to you a guide to gifting.

1

First and foremost, keep in mind that the purpose of gift-giving, whether by an individual or a corporation, is to please the recipient. Your focus must remain on the recipient if you want to elevate your gift-giving to an art. When shopping for a gift, many individuals automatically think along the lines of what they would appreciate or find appealing for themselves, not realizing that it may not be quite so valuable or admirable to the receiver. Gifting is so much more than just the physical exchange of objects; it’s a way to communicate and to send a message to the recipient that says “I really thought about you.” The way to do that is to consider the personality and lifestyle of the recipient. Categorize: male or female, middle-aged or teen? Then, break it down further. Are they athletic or couch potatoes? Foodies or health nuts? What are their hobbies and interests? Would they like something useful or something decorative? Something for the house or something for themselves? Your friend the traveler might like a leather bag or passport holder, while your mother, who loves to entertain, might appreciate new tableware. Once you’ve got a good analysis of the person you’re getting the gift for, the process will be much easier.

102 / THE MONSEY VIEW / February 28, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

2

Frequently, the monetary value of the gift is unimportant. There really is no need to break the bank and your tight budget to try to please and show that you care. A freshly married woman told me of a friend who gave her a list of menus for meat, dairy and pareve, written out in calligraphy, together with an offer of a cooking demo. Total monetary value about zero, and yet one of the most charming and thoughtful gifts that was appreciated for a long time thereafter. On that same note, Rebbetzin Ruchoma Shain, a”h, used to say that the best gift she’d ever received from her husband was a special tube of healing cream for a bad case of chapped hands… Something practical and given with heart goes way further than an expensive item that will collect dust on someone’s storage shelf.

3

If you’re more crafty, try making the gift. Nothing says “I care about you” more than a unique gift that you made yourself. Using your time, energy and creative juices to create something nice shows your loved one just how meaningful they are. The possibilities for do-it-yourself gifts are endless. Even if you don’t make it from scratch, just personalizing something yourself or adding some cute detail will instill a warm, personal touch to the present.

4

Instead of buying yet another knickknack that turns into useless clutter, offer a much needed service. Almost everyone could use a helping hand from time to time. Offer to watch

ACCEPTING GIFTS

For those on the receiving end, take a word of advice: Always accept a gift gracefully, regardless of how you feel about the gift or the giver. Even if a gift appears to be an insult, like a gym membership for that overweight someone, it may have been well-intentioned, albeit misguidedly. A genuine thank you is always an appropriate expression of appreciation and should not be delayed. Never diminish the giver’s generosity with a statement like “You shouldn’t have!” even if you wish they hadn’t. After all, they invested time, effort and money just for you! As we all know: It’s not the gift that counts, but the thought behind it!

5

While money is always appreciated, don’t just give cash. Cash gives the message, “I couldn’t be bothered to think too much about your preferences, and I needed to cross you off the list, so here you go.” To show just how much you really care, give the truly priceless gift of the written word. And don’t buy one of those cards with a generic message, but compose the message yourself, preferably in some beautiful ink. You don’t have to be Shakespeare and write deep poetry; a few heartfelt words is all it takes.

6

Some don’t feel like giving money, so they resort to the next best thing: gift cards. While for some this may be just what they wished for, keep in mind that gift cards force your recipients to spend them at a particular store. If that store is nowhere near their home or is not to their taste, it’s not much of a gift. Buy a gift card in a store that they frequent regularly or a boutique they wish to shop at but is above their budget. Another practical option is buying a gift card for a place like Amazon, where every person can find something they need. And once again, include some warm words.

someone’s kids for a night so they can have some time for themselves, or deliver a hot, nourishing supper on a busy evening. Send paid-for cleaning help on a hectic Erev Shabbos, or schedule an appointment for a calming massage. Do you have a special talent, like a knack for shopping or home-organizing? Give the gift of your expertise!

GIFTING TEACHERS

Here we need to devote a separate section for all those special people who play such a big role in our and our children’s lives. After all, we want to show appreciation for a job well done to the people who help nourish and educate our precious kids. Many parents will choose to tip teachers, and the topic of “how much is appropriate” is a hot one. To be honest, there is no one answer. Everyone knows their financial standing, and some have a much closer connection or feeling of indebtedness to a particular teacher than others. The bottom line is to wholeheartedly show our gratitude in every way possible. A few small bills with a warm poem on pretty stationery means so much more than a cold $50 check stuffed into a white envelope. One teacher, who had an especially challenging class one year, told me that the best gift she ever got was a letter from a parent who wrote a lengthy note thanking her for everything she had done to help her son throughout the school year. “I get it out and read it every time I have a bad day to remind me why I love teaching,” she says. For those who like to send along a cute little something, consider this advice about what not to buy:

1 2 3 4

Coffee mugs. Mugs are a perfect example of gifts teachers would prefer not to get. I know there are some really cute coffee mugs out there, but think about it: If a teacher receives just three mugs a year, how many will she accumulate in five years? Even if said teacher is an extreme coffee addict, how much use will it get? And think about all that wasted cupboard space… Scented lotions and perfumes. Unless you know for a fact what products your child’s teacher loves, please pass.

Home decor. Unless you’re a regular guest at the teacher’s home and know her style, avoid buying decorative frames, plaques or other items of home décor that are so dependent on personal taste.

Clutter-creating knickknacks. Tiny picture frames, porcelain baubles and other trinkets may be thoughtfully chosen, but they clutter up a teacher’s home very quickly. And don’t even think about buying anything with the words “World’s Best Teacher” on it.

FOR THOSE WHO ARE VERY busy, even important things will sometimes fall through the cracks. For Ahron Binick, that something was his personal bookkeeping; his bills and checks were all over the place. In a recent meeting, however, his rav pointed out that being sloppy with his maaser accounting wasn’t acceptable. Ahron thought he gave even more than maaser of his income to tzedakah every year, but the numbers were in his head so he just wasn’t sure. Now, with his rav’s warning ringing in his ears, he decided to look for a system to track his maaser calculations. With Purim and matanas l’evyonim just around the corner, it seemed like the right time to get his tzedakah in order. What systems and tools can Mr. Binick use to clean up and maintain his tzedakah account?

Keeping It Simple with Notebooks and Envelopes While Purim is a yom tov of giving, we are required to give tzedakah year-round. Giving maaser (10 percent) of one’s income has a special segulah to it, but this requires keeping close track of how much is owed and given to poor people and mosdos. While there are many ways to do so, the simplest methods often remain the best. Keeping a tzedakah ledger in a notebook can be very effective, and in days of old when there weren’t other options, all tzedakah was probably tracked this way. Indeed, there are many stories about the handwritten tzedakah ledgers of tzaddikim and how Hashem miraculously brought them back into balance when they were overdrawn. One such story in the well-known book All for the Boss relates how Reb Yaakov Yosef Herman, zt”l, used red ink for the side calculating the money owed to maaser and blue ink for the amounts paid. A color-coded written or typed list of obligations and donations can work just as well in the 21st century, too. Another low-tech but useful method is the envelope budgeting system. The idea of envelope budgeting is proactively planning where your money is going. Using cash or checks, each paycheck is divided into envelopes: one for housing, one for food, one for car expenses, one for savings, etc. This forces a focus and discipline on spending; if an envelope is running low, you must skimp until it’s refilled when the next paycheck is received. While this may seem a bit drastic, many who’ve had trouble with overspending appreciate the discipline of this basic system. While Ahron may not be interested in envelope budgeting for everything, he can do it just for his maaser. Every time he takes out income from his business, he can write checks (leaving the “Pay to” blank) of vari-

110 / THE MONSEY VIEW / February 28, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

ous amounts, equaling 10 percent of his income. By distributing these checks, he knows he is keeping his giving responsibilities. Having everything pre-filled out can work especially well on Purim when things are so busy and people are tipsy!

Technological Solutions for a Good Cause For those comfortable with technology, good personal accounting has never been easier. First, an Excel spreadsheet is today’s standard way to calculate numbers. As long as you are disciplined to update it, Excel is a very powerful electronic “notebook” (and much more). But because Ahron is so busy, he may want to use an automated software or app to do the data entry for him. Two popular programs, Mint and YNAB, automatically sync up with your bank accounts and categorize income and expenditures. There are some minor differences between them (mainly that Mint is free while YNAB costs a few dollars a month), but both are secure and very easy to set up and use. Using modern technology, Mr. Binick’s maaser obligations and payments can now be organized very accurately and speedily. In fact, once he gets used to using these programs to track his tzedakah, his whole personal budget will likely become a lot more organized as well!

For Savvy Nadvanim: Donor Advised Funds While notebooks and software programs will meet the needs of most, those with larger amounts of charity to give out should explore opening a Donor Advised Fund (DAF), which is an extremely convenient tool to manage charitable giving and tax deductions. A DAF is a tax-deductible account into which you deposit your charity money to be forwarded to charities of your choice. Large investment companies and charities maintain master DAF charities where all money donated is held in separate donor accounts. As they see fit, donors can instruct the master charity to forward donations out of their accounts to other charities of their choice. All charitable contributions made via a DAF show up in one statement, and during tax season there is no longer a need to chase down dozens or hundreds of receipts. The reason for this is that from the IRS’s perspective, the donation occurs immediately when the money is deposited into the master DAF, not when funds are forwarded to the many individual charities. This arrangement can work very well for people like Mr. Binick. By donating 10 percent of his income to one place, his DAF account, he will get an immediate tax deduction and ensure that his maaser is separated and tracked. Then, over time, he can have the DAF disburse the money to his favorite mosdos with no paperwork or hassle. DAF minimum account sizes begin at $5,000 and the fees are minimal, so it can be a good choice for many people. While a DAF is a very flexible and valuable tool, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, once the money goes into the DAF there is no going back because it is already donated. Also, the DAF route doesn’t allow for giving on the spot or to needy individuals; the check is sent directly from the DAF to recognized charity organizations. This takes away some of the personal touch of tzedakah and makes DAFs impractical for matanas l’evyonim. However, if they help Ahron keep his maaser orderly, the DAF will still help him enjoy a freilich and kosher Purim.

The Latin phrase in vino veritas means “in wine, truth.” That’s the reason ancient Persians, in addition to making it a rule to reconsider when sober the decisions they made when drunk, also made it a rule to reconsider when drunk the decisions they made when sober.

From time of consumption, it takes alcohol six minutes to affect the brain.

Bill Wilson, the co-founder of Alcoholics Anonymous, drank no alcohol during the last 37 years of his life. During his last few days, however, he demanded whiskey, becoming angry and aggressive when his caretakers refused.

A bottle of champagne contains approximately 49 million bubbles.

What does minding one’s p’s and q’s have to do with alcohol (aside from the suggestion being all the more apropos when the person in question is tipsy)? In England years ago, pubs served liquor in pint and quart sizes, and if a customer would become too out-of-control, the bartender would tell him to mind his pints and quarts. Over time, the phrase was shortened to “p’s and q’s” and its usage spread.

114 / THE MONSEY VIEW

Alcohol may improve personal hygiene. Wait, what? Yes, spraying not-sofresh clothes with vodka will improve their smell since vodka kills odorcausing bacteria immediately.

Approximately 30 percent of American adults never consume alcohol.

In 1931, during the height of the Prohibition, Winston Churchill visited the United States and found himself in a bit of a quandary. He wanted to drink, but the States didn’t allow it. What to do? The solution came after he was hit by an oncoming car; the doctor prescribed him six shots of alcohol at mealtimes.

In 1875, a large fire in Dublin, Ireland, spread to a malt house where some 5,000 barrels of spirits were stored. As the flames engulfed the storehouse, the casks containing the alcohol burst, sending a river of whiskey — which at one point measured two feet wide and six inches deep! — flowing through the streets of Dublin. The tenements emptied fast as their residents ran to take advantage of the free alcohol, and crowds of people used whatever means that had at their disposal — including their hands and boots — to scoop up the whiskey. Thirteen people died the night of the fire, but no one perished in the flames or from smoke inhalation. The universal cause of death? Alcohol poisoning from drinking “freely of the derelict whiskey.”

Blood alcohol concentration level can be three times higher in people who drink on an empty stomach versus people who drink after a meal.

Alexander the Great once held a drinking contest in India during his travels. The result? All but one of the 42 contestants — who were Indians unaccustomed to drinking — died on the spot from alcohol poisoning, and the winner, a Greek soldier, died four days later...

Alcohol doesn’t get digested; rather, it gets absorbed directly into the bloodstream.

It takes approximately 600 grapes to make a bottle of wine.

FLAUM’S, HERRING MAKES A TRENDY COMEBACK Herring is one of the comeback kosher foods of the 2000s Brooklyn, NY - For five generations, the Flaum family has been serving up fresh kosher pickles and herring, fish spreads, dips and salads that bring the delightful taste of oldworld tradition to every table. Once thought to have been discarded into the dustbin of history, herring has emerged as a strong seller in the modern kosher food world, experiencing a 30% spike in sales over the last five years, according to food experts. Celebrating its 100th year, the famed Flaum’s brand which began as an appetizing store on Lee Avenue in Williamsburg, has rolled out a series of herring products that are named after several legendary Eastern European Chasidic and Yeshiva movements such as Kotzk, Volozhin and Breslev, each known for their respective traits of sharpness, wit, and sweetness with the herring mimicking these virtues. Having built a reputation for being true to their original recipes, whilst being innovative, Flaum’s herring has come a long way. Each product that is introduced is inspired by one of the original recipes, perfecting it so that it remains flavorful, comfortable and a familiar taste for loyal customers. Today Flaum’s which is run by a fifth-generation family member, sells more than 15 varieties of the herring including Swedish Matjes Herring, Lox Tidbits in Cream, European Matjes and more. “Naming our herring products after the legendary move-

ments of Chasidus and the Yeshiva movement puts these foods in a context of continuity and heritage,” said Hershey Grunhut of Flaum’s. Indeed, historians point out that herring was a basic staple in the courtyards of the Chasidic movements in pre-War Europe. Whether it’s a week day or Shabbos, tens of thousands of people choose Flaum’s Appetizing for their spreads, dips, herring and other delicious Jewish heritage food because of its exceptional taste it has become the herring of choice at Kiddush celebrations all over the country. For immigrants who lived on the Lower East Side and Williamsburg, a trip to Flaum’s was an obligatory stop as a way of connecting with some of the foods of “der alter heim.” Today Flaum’s is a leading producer of a full line of salads, Mediterranean delicacies, dips and fish products. The remarkable growth of so many different kosher foods in the late 11980’s and 1990’s relegated herring to a back seat, say the experts, but in recent years sales of herring products, particularly the Flaum’s variety, have soared making it a leading seller in the kosher market. Herring has become a basic staple at the shul Kiddush. Served with a variety of different kichels, herring along with Vodka, Bourbon, Schnapps or other alcoholic beverage has completed the traditional Kiddush. But herring is no longer a Shabbos food, as it is now on buffet tables at events and even weddings.

I’m still not convinced they’re right…

He’s just trying to help the factory during a difficult time.

Recap: Gavriel leaves the boys’ clubhouse to answer a phone call from Tom, who called to ask Gavriel for more help. The boys follow Gavriel and overhear the suspicious phone call.

RESIDENT’S REVIEW:

“Although Pomona on the Hill is technically spread over a large area, it’s like one big family in terms of being there for one another. I’ve lived in Pomona for the past two years, and I love it. Turning onto Camp Hill Road after a hard day of work makes all the pressures recede — it’s as if I’m pulling into the driveway of my vacation home. The area is quiet and peaceful, and I have amazing views from my very own deck. I can see as far as New York City and miles and miles of empty land.”
