Your Voice Dear Readers, This new column is your podium, your forum to address community issues or concerns. Here, you can garner the advice and opinions of fellow neighbors, friends, and Monsey residents to a question or issue that you are grappling with or simply wondering about. The following question arrived to our inbox just this week, as the school year comes to an end. We air the question to you in the hope that you can enlighten this teacher.
Dear Mothers of the Community, Over the past few weeks, as a lower grades elementary teacher, I have gone through the agonizing process called “report cards.” I am not reaching out to you to lament on the hours of work it requires from my time; as a teacher, there is much I give, physically, emotionally, and mentally, and I do so gladly, if it will benefit my students. But here I am unsure what the goal is, and for which gain am I investing all the thought and work. Is it to continue to boost the ego of the already brilliant child? To strike another blow to the fragile self-image of a struggling student? To apply another jab to a mother’s heart, as she reads, once again, that despite all the effort she has invested, her daughter is not up to par? Granted, as the girls grow older and have the capabilities to improve and to work on their natural weaknesses, report cards can be a medium of effecting progress and motivating them to improve or keep being successful. But what really is the point in evaluating young children in such a manner? Any issue that needs to be discussed does not wait for report cards. There’s PTA and I make good use of my phone to keep the lines of communication with my parent body open. I give positive feedback, and constructive feedback, which can be tempered by the fact that it’s a personal phone call and not a dry report with ratings etched for eternity, As I slip each painstakingly written, edited, and rewritten report card into an envelope, I am reaching out to you, mothers of my students. What is your opinion? What benefits do you see in report cards for a young student? What gain did you have from the envelope that held an evaluation of your daughter’s progress? A fun-loving and soft-spoken mother of young children herself, Bracha laughs often and relates well to children. “I was a teacher for many years, and I love children,” explained Bracha. “You have to have a soft spot

a bike. There was an entire section of books and manuals designed to develop talent in art, architecture, physical coordination and crafts. There was an art area, a delightful selection of plush toys and a wall of games that looked both fun and intellectually stimulating. I found myself falling in love with the juggling kit, the face painting package, a kit to build battery-operated cars and fabulous accessories that allow you to blow the most humongous bubbles you have ever seen. The Weisses were careful to incorporate elements of fun and learning into their inventory; Bracha has a deep appreciation for children’s development at every age. “Even infants learn through play, as they start to see multiple colors, learn to grasp and manipulate things, and put things into their mouths,” observed Bracha. “That’s all play. I want to nurture thoughtful play, growing imaginations and talent in children.” Kinder World’s toys reflect that spirit of cultivating children’s abilities, developing their minds and fostering a joyful spirit. Walking around the store, I was struck by the realization that given the right tools, healthy play can unlock worlds of education and wonder for children of all ages. While children may view something as simple as dressing up, putting on a puppet show or role playing as a fun way to spend an afternoon, all of these activities have the potential

WHOLESOME, COLORFUL CUTLETS
This delectable, low-calorie chicken is packed with flavor, but not calories. It tastes wholesome and delicious and makes for an excellent supper even if you’re not on a diet. In my house, this is a favorite family supper. 6 thin sliced chicken cutlets
(If pepper strips are too long, cut them in half.)
1 large onion, cut into thin half circles
1 + ½ tsp salt
1 yellow pepper, cut into thin strips 1 red pepper, cut into thin strips
2 tablespoons oil 1 tsp paprika ½ tsp black pepper
1. Preheat oven to 380°. 2. Tenderize cutlets slightly. 3. Sprinkle with one teaspoon salt, paprika and black pepper.
PASTRAMI CUTLETS (AND DELICIOUS BAKED POTATOES TO GO WITH THEM)
This recipe is flavorful and juicy. It’s also quick and easy enough to prepare to become a regular supper for your family.
4. Spread onions evenly on top of cutlets.

5. Spread pepper strips evenly on top of onions.
1 pack sliced pastrami
6. Sprinkle with oil and remaining half teaspoon salt.
1 cup mayonnaise 2 heaping tablespoons duck sauce
1. Preheat oven to 400°. 2. In a bowl, mix the mayonnaise with the duck sauce. 3. Spread 2 tablespoon of the mayo mixture onto each of the butterflied cutlets.

7. Bake for 25 minutes, uncovered.

GOLDEN, BREADED CHICKEN FINGERS WITH SESAME DIPPING SAUCE Treat your family to these crispy, fried chicken fingers with the best sesame dipping sauce ever! The sesame sauce freezes really well. It’s a good idea to double the recipe and freeze half for another supper.
1. Place breadcrumbs in a bowl and season with salt, paprika and black pepper. 2. In a second bowl, beat eggs.

3. Dip one piece at a time into the beaten eggs and then into the seasoned breadcrumbs. 4. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat until hot and shimmering. Lay chicken strips in pan and fry for 2-3 minutes, until golden brown. Turn the chicken over and fry until equally brown on other side, about 2-3 minutes more.

SESAME DIPPING SAUCE 1 onion, chopped
½ cup ketchup
2 cloves garlic, minced
½- ¾ cup water
¾ cup brown sugar
¼ cup sesame seeds
2. Add the brown sugar, ketchup and water. Bring to a boil. Lower the flame and cook 10-15 minutes until slightly thickened. 3. Stir in the sesame seeds.

Bike Registration & Fun Fair By Chanie Spira

Every kid (and adult) in Rockland County is eagerly counting the days toward the upcoming Bike Registration and Fun Fair, which will take place Sunday, June 28, 2015, iy”H. This exciting, fun-filled, and educational day is brought to you by Chaverim of Rockland County. At the Chaverim headquarters, preparation for the event is feverish, and the last minute details are being ironed out. I caught up two dedicated Chaverim coordinators, who kindly took the time in between setting up the place to answer some questions regarding this special day. MV: How many years have you been doing Bike Registration for? This year will mark 11 years B”H. MV: That’s a long time! How did it all start? The summer before we started the program, there were a record number of bikes stolen in the Monsey area. Chaverim received numerous calls from desperate riders missing their bikes, and we decided that something must be done about it. So the next summer, we announced a bike registration day. Basically, we engraved each bike with a number, similar to a license, and registered the number with Chaverim. The numbers were then registered with the Ramapo Police Department. If a police officer caught any suspicious individual riding a bike, the numbers would point to the rightful owner. In addition, prospective bike thieves quickly realized that the bikes from our community are registered with the police, and they thought twice before making that grab. We got some side benefits from the registration, too. On more than one occasion, a small child was lost with a registered bike, and Chaverim had much an easier time locating the parents. We also get phone calls from people who have found a bike

and are looking for the owner. Mi Ke’amcha Yisrael, people truly go out of their way to do Hashavas Aveida. The bike registration still works the same way. Each bike gets engraved with a special tool by a Chaverim member, and the bike holder fills out a form which goes into Chaverim’s registry. Would you believe it, the summer just began, and the police have already caught quite a number of our bikes! MV: Oh! We can just imagine the excitement of someone finding their lost bike! What are you planning for this year? Some of it is a surprise, but we’ll share some, too. There are two parts to the day, the safety education part and the fun part. But really, both are fun! MV: Let’s start with the safety education part. We’re having many interesting departments join us: the Town of Ramapo Police, Hatzolah, Monsey Fire Department, NYS Police, and the Rockland Sheriff Department. Each department will make a presentation about a different safety issue using various interesting visual aids. Some of them will distribute a little memento or allow the children to see their vehicles up close. The fire department will talk about escape routes and the importance of smoke detectors. Town Supervisor Christopher St. Lawrence sponsored smoke detectors that will be distributed while supply lasts. The police department will discuss seatbelt safety, and The National Child Passenger Safety Certification, which is an organization dedicated to car seat safety, will have certified technicians showing you how to properly affix a car seat. MV: Anything else on car safety? Of course! We didn’t forget anything. Mendy Mobile Tires will be at the fair all day to check your car tires and ensure that they are safe for driving. They will also show the

driver where the spare tire is located and demonstrated how to properly use the spare tire tools. Then, Quality Mobile Mechanic will inspect your brakes, oil, and windshield wipers. MV: Wow! All of us can really learn a lot! Wait, we’re not done yet. One of the highlights every year is the helmet distribution. Bikur Cholim of Rockland County is doing it again! Thanks to them, the number of free helmets being distributed has more than quadrupled over the years. And this year, a record number will be doled out. MV: Are there unlimited helmets being distributed? No! But quite a lot. Make sure to be there early to get yours. Over the years, we’ve had a number of disappointed children who had to leave without a helmet because we were simply out of them. MV: What happens to the boys, who can only come later? Don’t they stand a chance? Sure they do! We divided the helmet distribution in two. 1:30 half of the helmets will be distributed to girls only and 4:30 the other half will be distributed to the boys.
MV: This whole event sounds massive! Who will be sponsoring such a major day? The organization, Mishkan Yecheskel, founded and supported by the renowned Baal Tzedakah Mr. Yecheskel Kaufteil from Evergreen Kosher Market, is sponsoring the event. We also have co-sponsors for some of the food. The money from the rides will cover the loose ends, and all the extra money earned from the rides will go straight toward helping Chaverim! MV: Definitely a most worthy cost. So let’s hear the exact timing of the fair.

We used to do it on Friday, but then the boys were only able to come late. So now it’s on Sunday from 1:30-6:30 at Viola Park. The rides will be divided for boys and girls. Every other hour, the four boys’ rides will be available for the girls and the girls’ rides will then be available for the boys. With this rotation, everyone can enjoy the day together. Helmets will be distributed at 1:30 for girls and 4:30 for boys.
The line may be long, but it pays to wait. Many people are unaware that a helmet that doesn’t fit properly is not worth much. So we have expert fitters customizing your helmet.

Many immigrants (including my grandfather) recall the wearisome, endless journey over the Atlantic to the New World. They vividly describe how they subsisted mostly on lukewarm soups, black bread, boiled potatoes, and herring, sustained by the dream that was America. When the disoriented passengers stepped off the boats, and onto the solid land of Ellis Island, the first encounter for many was an immigration agent, proffering a banana to each person, with the greeting, “Welcome to America!” My great-grandfather recounted his experience of arriving by himself from Yugoslavia in 1901, only 17 years old. He spoke no English, so the workers at Ellis Island placed a sign around his neck that listed his destination, gave him a banana, and put him on a train. “I did not know what to do with it, as I had never seen a banana before,” he explained. “So I watched, and when others peeled and ate the banana, I did the same.” But a friend of his, also from Yugoslavia, was told by a prankster that he should eat the skin and throw out the inside, a mistake he never made again. Ironically, the banana was as foreign to these shores as the men, women and children who were arriving from the Old World. Bananas. Once an exotic delicacy in the US, now ubiquitous and very popular. If you rub the inside of a banana peel on a scrape or burn, it will help the pain go away, keep the swelling down and keep the wound from getting infected.

If you rub the inside of a small piece of banana peel on a wart every night (or tape a piece of peel over the wart), the potassium in the peel can make the wart disappear in one to two weeks.

If you tape a banana peel over a splinter, the enzymes help the splinter work its way out of your skin (and also heal the wound).

To whiten teeth naturally, rub the inside of a banana peel on your teeth for about two minutes every night. If you gargle with salt water, this will heighten the effect. Expect results in about two weeks. It works because of the effect of the potassium, magnesium, and manganese in the banana peel.

New York Prison Escape: Manhunt Intensifies It may be the break that authorities need to capture Richard Matt and David Sweat, the two convicted murderers who escaped from Clinton Correction Facility on June 6. New York State Police have found DNA evidence in a cabin near Wolf Pond, about 20 miles west of the prison in Dannemora, New York. Police have set up a command center in nearby Owls Head.
Doug Hughes, 61, a Florida postal employee, had enough of the corrupting influence of big money in American politics. During a Monday press briefing, New York State Police Maj. Charles Guess characterized the latest search effort- one of the many over the past 17 days- as a confirmed lead. He said that the escapees are likely on their own. “There is no definitive evidence that anyone else is assisting them,” Guess said in a press conference Monday, “but we’re not ruling it out.” Although Guess declined to elaborate on the items that were recovered, multiple news outlets are reporting that police found prisonissued clothes, boots, bloody socks, and at least one set of fingerprints. Additionally, a water bottle and a jar of peanut butter were retrieved from the cabin. Ironically, the cabin is leased by a group of corrections o ff i c e r s , though there is no indication the escaped i n m a t e s knew this.

Man who Lands Gyrocopter on Capitol Lawn Rejects Plea Deal
It’s a surprising development to learn that the escapees may still be so close to the prison. Over the weekend, police received a “credible tip” and began searching in Allegany County, New York, near the state’s southern border with Pennsylvania. A 36-hour search of the area, which is 300 miles from the prison, turned up nothing.
On a separate note, a report published late Monday alleges that the prison worker accused of helping the two convicted killers break out of jail smuggled them vital tools, including hacksaw blades, chisels, a punch and a screwdriver bit, that were concealed inside frozen chunks of hamburger meat, according to a report published late Monday. Joyce Mitchell, 51, has been charged with felony promoting prison contraband and misdemeanor criminal facilitation in connection with the June 6 escape.

HOW YOUR CREDIT SCORE AFFECTS YOUR MORTGAGE How important is your credit score? For Michael, it has a potential cost of $77,330.40. Yes, Michael is purchasing a home, and he is putting 10% down. Because his credit score is 624, his interest rate is .625% higher than it could have been had his score been over 720, and his PMI (Private Mortgage Insurance) rate is also higher than it would have been. Based on his mortgage amount of $375,000.00, Michael’s low credit score will cost him over $77,000.00!! Michael is actually one of the lucky ones. He can still buy a home. Home ownership is the ultimate American dream. For Sophie, her credit score actually precluded her of the opportunity of purchasing a home. Sophie has a credit score of 504. She has scattered late payments in the last six months, and she is “maxed” out on all of her credit cards. She has no major credit catastrophes, no collection accounts and no judgments or repossessions. She is simply being rated very poorly because she is a habitual late payer and because she is overextended on her credit cards. She has been deemed by the three credit bureaus as poor risk. Sarah is also unable to purchase a home. Her score is 687, not too low by normal standards. She, though, has a settled HELOC (home equity line of credit). Sarah went through a very tough divorce, emotionally and financially. As a result of the divorce, she was forced to sell her home. She and her ex-husband had taken out a HELOC. At the closing, there weren’t enough proceeds to pay the HELOC in full, and the bank accepted a settlement. Because this happened in the last year, Sarah cannot get a mortgage until a minimum of two years have passed, irrespective of her credit score, down payment or income.
The more you know about what goes into your credit score, the easier it will be to maintain a good one. There are five key pieces of information used to calculate your credit score: Your Payment History: Pay your bills on time. That goes for all your bills, not just your credit cards and loans. While certain bills don’t get reported to the credit bureaus when you pay on time, they could end up on your credit report if you fall behind

2. Level of debt: Keep your credit card balances low. The higher your credit card balance is, the worse your credit score will be. Your credit card balance should be within 30% of your credit limit to maintain a good credit score. That’s $300 on a credit card with a $1,000 credit limit. Charging more than 30% of your credit limit is risky even if you plan to pay off the balance when your billing statement comes. Card issuers typically report the balance when your statement closes and if that’s a high balance, your credit score will be affected even if you subsequently pay your balance in full. 3.
Credit age: Don’t close old credit
cards. When you close a credit card, your credit card issuer no longer sends updates to the credit bureaus, and the credit scoring formula places less weight on inactive accounts. After 10 years or so, the credit bureau will remove that closed account’s history from your credit report. If the account was an old one (which it would be after 10+ years), losing that credit history will shorten your average credit age and cause your credit score to drop.
4. Mix of Credit: A “well-rounded” credit report has a mortgage, a car loan or lease, and three major credit cards. More credit is unnecessary. Recent Credit and Inquiries: Each time you apply for credit – whether a credit card or loan – your credit score takes a small hit. Credit Inquiries are only 10% of your credit score. Opening a new credit account also lowers your average credit age (15% of your credit score).

The mortgage industry is tough on credit and credit score. What is the recourse if someone may have a credit issue? I say early “detection”; some people don’t even know their score or don’t know what is on their credit report. Just because you do everything right with your credit doesn’t mean everyone else will. Errors could end up on your credit report leading to a drop in your credit score. Identity theft and credit card fraud can also lead to inaccurate information on your credit report. I urge everyone to carefully monitor your credit reports. There are many such services available to the consumer.
