Additional cost of living support for Sheffield Sheffield City Council have confirmed they will be providing extra funding to support communities with the cost of living through the winter months. As the weather gets colder, more people struggle to heat their homes due to rising gas and electric bills. This can also make affording every-day-essentials like food, more difficult. That is why during the winter period it

is important to offer more support to local communities, which the Council is addressing in their Winter Plan. The Plan will see a boost in support for services like Welcome Places, and will put money back in the pockets of local residents who need it most, through additional grant funding. Councillor Richard Williams, Chair of the Communities, Parks and Leisure Committee, at

Sheffield City Council, said: “We want to make sure that anyone in the local community that might be struggling is supported through these harsh winter months. That includes putting cash in pockets for essentials like food, gas and electricity. “80% of the people that apply for extra help through our funding grants are families with children, and I certainly don’t want to see any of

our Sheffield residents cold or hungry this winter. “We are also bolstering efforts to support our Welcome Places across the city, and our Citizen’s Advice Services also, so everyone has somewhere to turn if in need.” As part of the support package, an additional £660,000 is to be made available to local people through the Household Support Fund – a non-

repayable grant to help people living in Sheffield with food and energy costs. More about the Household Support Fund can be found at www. sheffield.gov.uk/cost-ofliving/apply-householdsupport-fund The Council will also be providing more funding for Citizens Advice Services with an additional £169,000 to

expand their city-wide freephone advice line and to increase face-toface support over the next few months. The Council is also supporting a network of Welcome Places across the city. These are spaces that people can not only come to find warmth, feel safe and welcome, but also to find support, should they need it. Councillor Williams added: “We are

currently working with organisations across the city, including voluntary, community and faith organisations, who provide Welcome Places, to help them provide support for their local communities throughout the winter months.”

You can find a map of Welcome Places at www. vas.org.uk/sheffieldliving-crisis-map-ofsupport/

Over the Christmas period, the Community Support Helpline will also be available to deal with immediate need for support in crisis situations, including those with no food or energy. Rotherham market and library development new look revealed An artist’s impression has been released giving the latest glimpse of what the ambitious market and library complex for Rotherham town centre will look like. The to scale drawings show a cedar clad modern, light filled double height chamber which, once developed, will give a sense of space and scale. The improvement is a key part of Rotherham Council’s largescale regeneration plans aimed at breathing new life into the heart of the borough. The plans will complement the impressive Forge Island development also currently underway – forming the main cornerstones of the council’s multi-million-pound investment in Rotherham’s future. The plans, which were approved in the summer, will bring together the library, markets, food hall, gallery, and event spaces onto one site, off Drummond Street. Once works are complete, visitors will benefit from a refurbished indoor and outdoor covered market, and an external recreation area. Not only will this provide a modern and accessible central library but will also ensure links are improved between the town centre, library, and college. Rotherham Cabinet members are expected to sign off the proposals for the last time, subject to the final procurement cost, at its meeting next Monday, 18 December. Cllr Denise Lelliott, Cabinet Member for Jobs and the Local Economy, said: “This next phase of the town centre masterplan is a

testament to the Council’s dedication to investing in Rotherham’s future and to preserving the heritage of the town while embracing its dynamic future. The redevelopment will not only breathe new life into the community, but also provide economic opportunities for local businesses. “Small independent retailers play a vital role within the wider town centre offer and whilst the works are on-going, we ask that residents continue to support local traders by visiting the markets. "The reinvention of the markets is not just a facelift, but a holistic reimagining that aims to boost the local economy, celebrate our diverse community and provide an accessible, enjoyable space for all." Rotherham's markets date back to the 13th Century and have been at their current site since 1971. A council paper published earlier this year said the existing site was under-utilised and poorly connected to nearby housing. The revamped market will offer more choice, promote local

businesses, and improve links to residential areas and Rotherham College. Main work will begin in Spring 2024, once a developer has been appointed. The outdoor market has already been moved to Effingham Street in preparation and will remain there until the new premises are complete. Rotherham’s traditional outdoor market continues to take place there every Tuesday, with the general market open Mondays, Tuesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays; antique and bric-a-brac on Wednesdays; and Rotherham Bazaar on Thursdays. The indoor market will be open throughout the festive period from 8.30am to 5pm, up to Christmas Eve when it will be open from 8am to 12pm. The indoor market will re-open on Wednesday, December 27. Further details on everything the market has to offer can be found by visiting rotherhamtowncentre. co.uk/markets or by following Rotherham Markets on Facebook.

SNODGRASS

This morning I used Red Bull instead of water to make my coffee. After 15 minutes of driving I realised that I’d left my car at home! I asked my wife to act like a “naughty school girl”. She forged a note from her mother saying she didn’t have to participate. A bunch of scumbags stole 20 crates of Red Bull from my local supermarket yesterday. I don’t know how they sleep at night. Me to mate, “My wife keeps pestering me to dress up as an Alice in Wonderland character!” Mate “Are you mad at her?” “Don’t you start!” Just tried changing my password to “14Days” but it was two week. Just managed to burn 1500 calories in 30 minutes! The pizza’s ruined though. My mother used to beat me as a child with a camera. I keep having flashbacks.

Tickets for Jeff Wayne’s Musical Version of The War Worlds in Sheffield at the Utilita Arena on Tuesday 8 April 2025 are on sale now from www. utilitaarenasheffield.co.uk

My mum always used to say “40 is the new 30”. Lovely woman, banned from driving. My girlfriend asked me, “Did you eat my chocolate in the cupboard last night?” “No, don’t be silly” I replied, “I ate it on the sofa.”

sick children’s trust abbeydale picture house drink driving - the facts reaches critical stage As the year draws to a close, we think about spending precious time with loved ones, but for many families with a sick child in hospital they’ll be worried about how they can be by their child’s side. Can you imagine having a seriously sick child in hospital and you’re not able to be by their bedside at this traumatic time? The Sick Children’s Trust is there to make sure no child faces hospital alone and can have their family by their side, especially at Christmas. This Christmas the Sick Children’s trust expect all ten of their ‘Homes from Home’ to be full, ensuring that families with a seriously ill child in hospital can be together, but they can only do this with your help. It costs The Sick Children’s Trust £40 to keep a family together for one night but that is only increasing with the cost of living crisis. Help them make sure families can be together this Christmas. Last year they supported Alfie’s family in our Crawford House ‘Home from Home’. His mum Becy said: “Crawford House really felt like a home from home. There was a large Christmas tree in the reception, and we had a communal kitchen, warm bedroom and bathroom. I found it so incredibly hard to leave Alfie on the ward each night, so to come back to such a warm, homely place like Crawford House, meant the world to us. It made a very difficult time that little

bit easier. With Christmas being our favourite time of year, we wanted to start our own family traditions. One of which was to read ‘The Night before Christmas’ to Alfie, something made possible by the close proximity of Crawford House to the ward. Though it wasn’t the first Christmas we had planned, we still got to spend precious time with our baby. Following his recovery Alfie is now thriving. While we will be making the most of this special time, we will also be thinking about the families spending Christmas in hospital and at Crawford House this year. We know how heartbreaking it is to have a child in hospital at any time, but over the festive period is particularly difficult. We’re urging everyone to support The Sick Children’s Trust and their Christmas appeal so that every family can be together over the festive period.” All families should be together during this precious time of year. Hopefully you’ll be able to donate to the Together at Christmas appeal as no matter how big or small your donation, you’ll be helping them to keep families, like Alfie’s, together at Christmas and beyond. Please visit the website sickchildrenstrust.org to donate.

Sheffield arts charity CADS (Creative Arts Development Space) has reached a crucial point in the quest to restore the Abbeydale Picture House building. Two years after the devastating news that the ceiling was unsafe and the roof was leaking water, parts of this iconic building are now at risk of immediate collapse. The significant issue lies in the current state of the space, including the Grade II listed auditorium, as it is deemed unsafe and unusable. This is causing a huge financial drain, with minimal returns from the remaining areas of the building. Earlier this year, an agreement was made for CADS to purchase the building with a mortgage approved. However, CADS have been unable to find the additional funds to secure the building. The Music Venues Trust, The National Trust and The Theatres Trust have all supported CADS with advice and consultation but two unsuccessful bids to the Community Ownership Fund (COF) from the UK Government have left CADS with limited options. This has led to a huge risk that the building will fall into further disrepair and dereliction, including a potential ceiling collapse, it requires a minimum of £160k spending to ensure it is safe with further funding needed to fully restore the building. In the two years since the water ingress was first discovered, the damage has increased a high chance that large sections of the antique, barrelvaulted plaster ceiling may collapse imminently. This outcome would be a huge blow to Sheffield. Much of the original features of this more-than-acentury-old picture house, despite needing work,

are still in place. We’ve seen previously what can happen to buildings like this in Sheffield such as the old town hall. Despite the main auditorium being out of action now for exactly two years, CADS have made extensive use of the ‘fly tower’ behind the main stage which was once used to house props and staging for the theatre and still contains the antique fire guard which would have dropped in front of the stage during the era around 100 years ago when gas lamps would have been the main source of light. Plus a ‘speakeasy’ bar has been created in the entranceway of the main space which plays host to events and activities. These projects are sadly not enough to sustain the running costs of the building. The CADS team has promised that there will be a significant update to this project very soon. CADS board director and founder Steve Rimmer said, “The CADS team has worked tirelessly to ensure the future of this prestigious building. We are incredibly grateful to everyone who has supported us over the last seven years to try and make the building work, especially more recently, whilst the ‘main hall’ became unsafe. We are having supportive conversations with the Sheffield City Council regarding available support and exploring many different business models and bidding opportunities, but sadly, without significant funding, we’re becoming unable to continue our vision of saving this piece of Sheffield history. “

The Christmas countdown has begun in earnest, but drink and drug driving rehabilitation expert TTC is urging merry makers to be fully aware of the legal limits before they get behind the wheel of a vehicle. Findings from a TTC poll of motorists on drink and drug driving awareness are cause for concern. One in ten motorists confess to drink driving and a staggering 64% confirm they have knowingly accepted a lift from someone who is likely to be over the drink drive limit or taken recreational drugs. Someone found guilty of driving whilst over the drink or drug drive limit, or who was unfit through drink or drugs, including legal drugs in their system, could face an unlimited fine, a driving ban, a community service order or even a prison sentence. What’s more, if a passenger in that driver’s car was found guilty in a court of law of ‘aiding and abetting’, they could receive the same penalty as the driver, including being sent to prison and a disqualification from driving. However, the highest price to pay is being involved in a driver impaired collision that harms passengers, other road users and pedestrians. Latest Department for Transport figures show fatalities from drink-drive crashes are at a 12-year high. An estimated 260 people were killed in collisions on Britain’s roads involving a driver over the alcohol limit in 2021 – the highest

annual total since 2009. “Drivers are putting themselves, their passengers and other road users at serious risk every time they get behind the wheel after consuming alcohol or drugs,” Sharon Haynes, Director – Police at TTC commented. “You don’t have to be over the limit to increase your risk, but our survey results suggest drivers and passengers have a much too relaxed view of drink or drug driving. All too often this is simply due to a lack of awareness of the impact alcohol and medicinal and recreational drugs have on our senses and ability to drive safely. The findings also show drivers have little more than a vague idea of the legal implications of being caught over the limit.” Although being aware of units per alcoholic beverage and legal drink drive limits are a must, it is extremely hard to know if someone is over the legal drink drive limit at a given time. The amount of alcohol in a person’s breath, blood or urine at the time of testing will depend on their weight, age, metabolism, the amount of food they’ve eaten and other factors. The only way to guarantee safety is to abstain from alcohol and drugs entirely when planning to drive that day or the following morning. The consequences of being caught When it comes to convictions and legal consequences of driving under the influence of drink or drugs, many respondents are hazy

The minimum ban is actually 12 months for a first offence or three years if convicted twice in ten years. To mitigate the impact of alcohol or recreational drugs the morning after an evening out, less than half of respondents (49%) allow 24 hours to pass before driving, while 56% will drive as long as they got a good night’s sleep of seven hours. 41% make sure they drink a large glass of water before bed to rehydrate and help alleviate the inevitable hangover. One in three will have a big breakfast before getting behind the wheel, and one in five will rely on taking over the counter painkillers. Know the facts • The NHS recommends adults drink no more than 14 units of alcohol a week, spread across 3 days or more. That’s around 6 medium (175ml) glasses of wine, or 6 pints of 4% beer.

• If a driver is found to be over the drink-drive limit, and/or driving while impaired by alcohol, they can receive a maximum penalty of six months in prison, an unlimited fine and an automatic driving ban of at least one year. • Drivers can be convicted of drug driving even if they only took prescribed medicine, so check with your doctor or pharmacist if you’re unsure. • The Police confirm: - If you are found guilty of drink driving, you will receive a criminal record - You can be sent to prison on your first drink driving conviction - A UK drink drive conviction may impact your ability to visit other countries - The minimum driving ban because of a first conviction for drug or drink driving is 12 months, increasing to three years if convicted twice within ten years - If you drive for work, your employer will see your conviction on your licence • The Government confirms: - A drink driving conviction remains on a licence for between four and 11 years - A drug driving conviction remains on a licence for four years

Brighten up the beginning of the year TICKETS GO ON SALE FOR BEN ELTON BRINGING with fantastic events across Yorkshire ‘AUTHENTIC STUPIDITY’ TO SHEFFIELD CITY HALL As the public regained their confidence and love of attending face-to-face events, a local business vowed to entertain people with a mix of music styles at multiple venues across South & West Yorkshire. Throughout 2024 Tony Sykes productions will be hosting top class shows at the Holiday Inn at Dodworth, Shafton Village Working Mens Club and Ossett Town Hall. The entertainment ranges from fantastic tributes to Elvis Presley, Dolly Parton, Robbie Williams and more, to some of to some of the premier Brass Bands of the region.

One of the main events happening throughout the year is their Tribute Act Festival, which returns after a successful launch in 2023 and is back bigger and better for 2024! This year-long event’s line up includes tributes to Tom Jones, Roy Orbison, Neil Diamond, Elvis and much more! The Sunday afternoon events are perfect for those that love to socialise, dance or have a laugh without the late night. However, the bar remains open all evening should you wish to stay around longer. So bring your celebration to one of these events for great times and long-lasting memories.

The full listing of dates, venues and acts scheduled can be found in the advert below. The new Yorkshire Brass Band Festival promises to bring musical delight by featuring some of the best local brass bands. Don’t usually listen to live brass music? Give it a try, it is an experience to be witnessed at least once! This celebration of traditional Yorkshire Brass Band music kicks off at Ossett Town Hall then continues at the Holiday Inn Barnsley. PLUS don’t miss Colin Paul & The Persuaders on Saturday 8 June 2024 for a Rock ‘n’ Roll extravaganza 7PM til late. There will also be some exciting additional events, yet to be published, so watch this space for more news! You can download the current 2024 event brochure at tonysykesproductions.co.uk or follow them on Facebook to keep up with all the event happenings.

Following the huge success of Ben Elton’s critically acclaimed sold-out UK tour in 2019, which marked his return to stand up after a 15 year hiatus, the undisputed godfather of modern stand-up is going back on the road with a brand new live show – Authentic Stupidity. Taking in 54 dates across the UK & Ireland, the tour arrives at Sheffield City Hall on 10 September 2024. The world has changed a lot since Ben last toured five years ago - a whole new existential threat has emerged to challenge our very existence: Artificial Intelligence. Apparently, it’s going to render all human life meaningless, but Ben is here to warn you that AI is not the greatest threat that we face; it’s Authentic Stupidity! Ben said: “The verdict’s in! Humanity is thick! Homo halfwit.

The idiot branch of the Ape family! We need signs to tell us to step off escalators, we elect gibbering fools to lead us and now we’ve invented Artificial Intelligence which is actually going to replace us! I’ve spent 45 years in comedy

exploring the outer limits of human idiocy and my mission has never been more timely. Forget AI! It’s AS we need to be worrying about!” Tickets are now on sale via www. sheffieldcityhall.co.uk

BLADES RETURN EMPTY HANDED FROM TRIP TO THE CAPITAL United’s trip to the capital ended in defeat, with two second half goals in the space of seven minutes proving decisive. It was a pretty even first period with the Blades frustrating the hosts and the Stamford Bridge faithful, but Cole Palmer opened the scoring before the hour, with Nicolas Jackson adding a second moments after to secure the points for the Blues. Boss Wilder made two changes for the trip to SW6, with Lowe and McBurnie recalled to

the starting XI, at the expense of the suspended Robinson and Osula, who dropped to the bench. Baldock and Norwood also returned to the matchday 20. Despite conceding a corner inside the opening 60 seconds, Foderingham wasn’t forced into a save until he comfortably denied Gallagher from distance on 15 minutes, whilst at the other end Archer’s promising effort took a deflection after Brooks and then Hamer had done well to win the ball back in midfield. Lowe was ideally

KELLY JOINS MILLERS AS ASSISTANT HEAD COACH

Rotherham United are delighted to confirm the appointment of Rob Kelly as the club’s new assistant head coach. Kelly re-joins head coach Leam Richardson in signing a contract which will run until the summer of 2026 in South Yorkshire having previously worked alongside the new Millers boss - most recently during their time together at Wigan Athletic. The 58-year-old boasts a decorated coaching CV which includes stints with the likes of Leicester City, Preston North End and Nottingham Forest and follows time as professional player with the Foxes, Tranmere Rovers, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Burton Albion. Kelly’s arrival bolsters the club’s coaching staff ahead of Saturday’s trip to Plymouth Argyle, where he will be joined in the technical area by current coaching staff Wayne Carlisle, Dan Green and Scott Brown. More will follow including reaction from head coach Leam Richardson to Rob’s appointment over the coming days on www.themillers.co.uk.

positioned to make a crucial block after Mydryk had got round the back of Bogle, but the wing-back then overlapped McAtee and put in an inviting ball the went across the face of the home goal, as the dangerous Archer won a third Blades corner. Foderingham was out smartly to prevent Jackson from advancing, before the Senegalese striker curled wide from distance, with McAtee being booked prior to that attack. The second half begin with Trusty making a crucial block to deny

PALMER, but on 54 minutes the former Manchester City man combined with Sterling before firing home to complete a flowing attack, with the goal standing despite a VAR check for a possible offside in the build-up. Osula was introduced with Brooks making way as Wilder reacted positively to the setback of conceding. But seconds after the hour mark, Chelsea doubled their lead with JACKSON applying the finishing touch from Palmer’s low cross after Foderingham

We had a feeling

After a sensational climax at Hillsborough as the Owls struck a late, late winner to beat QPR 2-1, Danny Röhl spread the credit around the whole S6 camp. Anthony Musaba was the man of the moment, firing home in front of the Kop following a Bailey Cadamarteri goal that cancelled out Ilias Chair’s opener for the R’s. Röhl told swfc.co.uk: “It was fantastic for everyone, I am so happy. Our fans were unbelievable, they helped us so much over the line. “We had a feeling, that feeling that something special can happen. We have spoken about the belief about going all the way to the last whistle and the players delivered. “The substitutes are so important, they are as important as the team that starts the game. Everybody played their part, if you keep believing then special things can happen. “Two weeks ago it was 12 points, now it is six points, we will keep going step by step, game by game.” Röhl will assess injuries to Bambo Diaby, Callum Paterson and John Buckley, all of whom were forced off through injury. He added: “It is too early to say right now, we will know more soon. The intensity of the Championship can lead to these injuries but if one player cannot play, another player must come in and make their claim, they must be ready. “Tonight we focus on the positive things, this is only three points but a very big three points.” The Owls captain was a delighted man at full time on Saturday. Barry Bannan was as influential as ever as Wednesday picked up a crucial three points at Hillsborough against QPR. Under Danny Röhl, the team continue to show progression, improvement and a fighting spirit so clear for all to see. The weekend win over the R’s once again showed the boys’ ability to bounce back having fallen behind and

couldn’t gather after a combination of Sterling and Gallagher had looked to force the ball home. Hamer was cautioned before being denied from a free kick by Petrovic, with Osula having the ball in the net moments later, but the ball had gone out as McAtee forced his way to the byline. Lowe was carded for a late challenge on Enzo before Broja somehow missed from under the crossbar with Palmer again causing problems down the right. Slimane was introduced late on, before Foderingham

produced a fine double save to deny Jackson on the follow up after initially parrying Palmer’s free

push to the very last moments in the game. Having got back on level terms through Bailey Cadamarteri, the big moment that sent S6 into a frenzy came on 94 minutes when Anthony Musaba blasted emphatically into the Kop net. The brilliance of Bannan in the build-up played a huge part in the clincher and the skipper told us: “We got the crowd behind us, they were brilliant and pushed us on and it was just a great moment. “We knew we would get chances, it was just about patience and sticking to the gameplan and we came through in the end. “When you want something so much and it happens like that, it’s hard to describe. There is no better feeling. “We are all together as a team, as a club and fighting for the same things and going in the right direction. To see everybody as happy as that is an amazing feeling.” As Wednesday keep on chipping away at the point deficit to safety, Bannan continued: “Second half we were the better team, we were the ones forcing the game and dictating the game. “We probably lacked quality in the final third at crucial moments, but it’s the end of a tough week, boys are tired so you’re not going to get the same quality. “But what you need to do there is make sure you’re fighting to the end. Once we got the goal, I knew we were going to push to win it. Once you get this crowd behind you it’s powerful and that’s why I was trying to get the boys back to the halfway line to give us more time. “Whether we got it or not I didn’t know, but I knew we would get chances. It’s amazing. They were behind us the whole second half and drove us over the line.”

kick. Six minutes of added time were played out, with Archer firing wide from a promising position

after got the better of Silva and that was the last action of note.

Terry Bramall to become club ChaiR AT ROVERS Following discussions between the owners last week, Doncaster Rovers have confirmed that Terry Bramall will become Chair of the club. Terry said: “I’m excited to assume the position of Chair of Doncaster Rovers and thank David for his efforts, and now giving me the opportunity to assume the role. “When I first stepped onto the Board of Doncaster Rovers almost 20 years ago, we managed to secure promotion to the Championship for the first time in 50 years. “I hope that during my tenure as Chair, between Gavin, Grant and myself, we can rebuild the club and have those aspirations again. “As those who have heard me speak before will know, ensuring Doncaster Rovers remain an important part of the borough’s community is hugely important to me, and the club will continue to operate to those principles whilst I am Chair.”
