Britain’s licensed premises drops to 20 year low Newport Road, North Cave,

Open Every Sunday from 6:30am til 1pm

More than 44,000 net outlets have been lost since 2003, equivalent to just over six closures every day for the last two decades. New figures from leading hospitality trade body UKHospitality in partnership with CGA by NIQ, reveal that Britain’s number of licensed premises has fallen by nearly a third (31%) in the last two decades. The figures highlight the seismic changes in hospitality and the sustained periods of pressure the industry has been under, more recently exacerbated by soaring inflation, rising energy bills and

workforce challenges. UKHospitality is calling for urgent Government support in the Autumn Statement, in the form of extending business rates relief and freezing the current multiplier. The insights show that at the end of September 2023, the total number of licensed premises in Britain stood at 99,916 —a drop of 30.6% from the figure of 144,055 recorded by CGA in 2003, and the first time it has entered five figures. The largest losses have been drink-led pubs, bars and nightclubs, which have seen a net decline of 43.6% over the period. The

last 20 years have also seen an uplift in managed sites, which have performed better than their independent counterparts, up 14.6% versus a decline of 32.9%. The period has also experienced an increase in eating venues, up 14.8%, mainly in the form of the casual dining restaurants and foodled pubs, which reflects the consumer shift in this time from drinking out to eating out. The positive news is that the wider hospitality sector continues to grow its workforce, suggesting that some of the losses of venues are offset by larger sites and

particularly more foodfocused businesses. However, this shows a very changed landscape in the space of just two decades. Kate Nicholls, CEO of UKHospitality, said: “Given the shocking number of hospitality business closures exposed by these new figures, the last thing the sector needs is the potential £1 billion bill as a result of the business rates hike due in April. Our industry has proved time and time again that, with the right conditions, it can drive national economic growth, invest in local communities and create jobs at all levels.

The Autumn Statement is an opportunity to extend the current business rates relief and freeze the current multiplier. In doing so, it can not only save more local and national businesses from closure but enable investment and growth. We also continue to ask the Chancellor to consider more medium- to long-term measures to support the industry, such as reviewing the rate of VAT for hospitality and reforming the apprenticeship levy to give businesses more control and flexibility over funding.”

TICKETS GO ON SALE FOR ORCHESTRAL Manoeuvres IN SHEFFIELD After the recent announcement of their forthcoming new studio album, synth pioneers Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark (OMD) revealed details of their return to the stage, with the band taking to the road next year, arriving at Sheffield City Hall on Sunday, 10 March 2024. Across February & March 2024, OMD will play 22 dates across the UK & Ireland with support coming from Walt Disco. “We are so excited to be able to tour again with a brand new album to showcase.” says Andy McCluskey. “It’s been six years since we learned

new songs for live performances. The songs from Bauhaus Staircase will fit beautifully into our setlist - we just have to choose which five to play, as we have to treat people to the hits as well!” The band also release ‘Slow Train’ - the second installment from their forthcoming new studio album Bauhaus Staircase - out October 27th on 100% Records. A raucous, glam-tinged explosion, ‘Slow Train’ arrives with help from the band;s only other external influence David Watts. Known as a rock producer, who helmed Sheffield band The Reytons’ recent No 1

album What’s Rock And Roll?, he brings a sharp, exciting new sound to the record. “Slow Train is a bonkers song and the video is stunningly crazy!” Andy reflects. “It feels nice to be able to challenge people’s expectations of the band after 45 years of creating music” The new album sees the band’s most explicitly political record and the crowning achievement of their desire to be both Stockhausen and Abba born from the impetus to kickstart new explorations during lockdown. A broad, electronic, sonic masterpiece that

lyrically tackles the topics of the future, it was predominantly written, recorded, and mixed by both McCluskey & Paul Humphreys (who has recently become a secondtime father). OMD have sold an astonishing 25 million singles and 15 million albums, which has established them as electronic synthesiser pioneers and one of Britain’s best-loved pop groups. Their 13 albums include reissued ‘Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark’ (1980), ‘Organisation’ (1980), ‘Architecture & Morality’ (1981) and ‘Dazzle Ships’ (1983).

By rights, OMD should be in semi-retirement, performing classics like Enola Gay and Maid Of Orleans on the nostalgia festival circuit like so many peers. Instead, they’ve created a landmark album worthy of their finest work. If real life meant OMD were happy to get help,

Bauhaus Staircase remains unmistakably the work of a duo who are still perfectly in sync 45 years after their first gig at legendary Liverpool club Eric’s. Tickets are now on general sale and available from the City Hall Box Office and sheffieldcityhall.co.uk

“An ADHD diagnosis doesn’t mean you can’t drive, but it does mean you need to take special care to ensure your safety and that of other road users,” states Dominic Wyatt, of the International Driver’s Association (IDA). Unravelling ADHD and Driving Attention-Deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) significantly affects attentiveness, impulse control, organisational abilities, and time management. Translated into a driving context, these challenges can affect road safety. It’s essential to scrutinise symptoms meticulously and make sensible decisions about disclosing your condition to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA). UK law stipulates that individuals who hold a driving licence — or those interested in obtaining one — are obliged to inform the DVLA about any condition that may affect their driving competence. Numerous Shades of ADHD: Warning Signs The effects of ADHD on driving can manifest in different ways, and to varying degrees. Here are some symptoms that might signify difficulties: 1 Difficulty with sustained focus and attention, leading to distractions while driving. 2 Impulsivity, leading to rash decisions like speed violations or risky overtaking manoeuvres. 3 Hyperactivity, which could affect the ability to remain still and observant during long drives. 4 Poor organisational skills and time management, resulting in last-minute outings, hasty driving, and potential rule-breaking. Ashton’s Law and Implications for ADHD Drivers UK legislation, Ashton’s Law, introduced in 2016, places a moral, medical, and legal imperative on all drivers to declare certain diagnoses to the DVLA.

DOLCE VITA

Sheffield’s Christmas markets are back and full to the brim with festive treats and gifts for everyone to enjoy, including an extra special weekend of festivities planned. Sheffield’s Festive Weekend will take place on the first weekend of the Christmas Markets and the city will play host to street entertainment including brass bands, choirs, street dance artists and an outdoor cinema screen which will be showing Christmas films throughout the weekend. Due to ongoing transformative works on Fargate to improve and develop the city centre, Christmas in Sheffield will look a little different from usual this year. It will not be possible to safely host a Christmas lights switch on event, therefore, to make sure people can celebrate Christmas in style, the Council will be hosting a whole weekend of festivities, with lights put up across the city centre and plenty of Christmasthemed activities taking place across the city for all to enjoy. Why isn’t it possible to host the Christmas lights switch on? The decision to not hold a Christmas lights switch-on event has been taken due to crowd safety concerns and much consideration. Experts advised that due to the Future High Streets Fund works currently taking place at the top of Fargate, entry and exit routes to and from Barkers Pool are compromised. • Recent attendance levels at the event have been in the area of 35,000 – 40,000.

• Other locations were considered as alternatives – The Peace Gardens, Barkers Pool and Tudor as individual locations do not give the capacity site numbers needed for the event. • The Moor is not available due to the fact over 60% of the Christmas Market and Big Wheel will already be in operation. • The Christmas Market will operate from 16th November – 24th December (Bars will be open until 2nd January 2024) Opening hours: 10am - 8pm everyday (Bars open until 11pm) Councillor Minesh Parekh, Deputy Chair of Sheffield City Council’s Economic Development and Skills Policy Committee said: “Sheffield is the place to be at Christmas time, with so much to enjoy. This year, the city will be hosting a two-day Festive Weekend on Saturday 18th and 19th November, to celebrate Christmas in style. Big changes to Sheffield’s city centre—including transforming Fargate and Pinstone street—have led us to explore new opportunities to ensure our Christmas celebrations will be better than ever. We’re excited to showcase our changing city centre throughout the Christmas period, and to be hosting this new, whole-weekend event.” What work is happening on Fargate? Work is underway to transform the public space on Fargate, including new seating, lighting and Grey to Green inspired planting, an underground bin system and a sustainable urban drainage.

This includes conditions such as ADHD that can influence driving ability. Dominic stresses, “It is the individual’s responsibility to self-declare. If ADHD medical professionals are aware of a patient’s symptoms impacting driving the doctor can break confidentiality and notify DVLA.” Failure to abide by these laws can lead to fines up to £1,000. More severe situations involving damage, injury, or loss of life due to undisclosed medical conditions can result in prosecution and imprisonment. Making Informed Decisions: Disclosure and Self-Regulation While ADHD can present certain challenges, it does not necessarily render individuals incapable of driving. With precautions, people diagnosed with ADHD can lead perfectly normal and unrestricted lives on the roads. Dominic suggests crucial steps in managing driving with ADHD: • Engage with a healthcare professional to gauge the severity of symptoms and their potential impact on driving. • Disclose the situation to the DVLA, if necessary. • Consider professional driving training to understand road rules, safe driving habits, and coping mechanisms for ADHD symptoms. • Conduct regular selfassessment to ensure any heightened symptoms are not impacting your ability to drive safely. Dominic says: An ADHD diagnosis may throw a temporary speed bump on your driving journey. Nonetheless, with an understanding of warning signs and adherence to legal disclosure requirements, driving responsibly can be well within reach. Your commitment to safety, honesty in disclosure, and willingness to adapt ensures your drive remains smooth, even with ADHD in the passenger seat.

With the darker nights drawing in and temperatures dropping across the UK, the temptation to flick on the heating and cosy up by the fire has arrived. Despite the new energy price cap leaving some bills to cost less than last year, there are still many ways you can reduce the costs and keep expenditure to a minimum. This is why experts have revealed their top tips on saving energy at home to lower household bills, whilst keeping your home and family warm during the colder months. Following this guide over the Winter will help to reduce energy bills, allowing Brits to save money, stay warm and make smarter decisions when it comes to energy usage. Water Efficiency It is vital to know that around 25% of your home’s energy consumption is used by heating water, but it is possible to save money while you are in the shower, surprisingly. By shaving off a few minutes in the shower, you can save up to £150 each year on your bill. Another way to ensure your hot water is being used efficiently is by adding a waterefficient showerhead into your bathroom, most of which cost between £10-£20 and when fitted properly, make sure you have no leaking areas, which could be costing you vital pennies. Correct insulation is key Draught-proofing your home doesn’t have

to cost an arm and a leg. If you notice that your home is losing a lot of its heat quickly and it’s hard to keep warm, you can try some insulation hacks to try to combat the escaping heat. Remember to identify the areas that are causing the escaping heat first before trying these steps: • Move your furniture to maximise heat – if your furniture is blocking your radiators, you are essentially throwing money away. It is important to let the heat circulate in a room properly, so have a play around with your furniture placement and make sure you aren’t blocking off the heat at the source. • Invest in a smart thermostat – as well as being totally cost-effective, smart thermostats are a great way to manage your home’s temperature through your phone. They offer an easy way to set timers for when you are on your way home, that way, your home can be toasty when you get in, as well as having complete control over the temperature in each room. • Upgrade your curtains or blinds – when a home has thick curtains, it allows the heat to stay in the room and not easily escape. Remember to put your blinds down and curtains across as soon as it starts to get dark, as this will also prevent escaping heat. If you are looking for a more substantial

This option is pricier but can reduce costs in the long run. Improper insulation is a total waste of energy, so make sure to check any gaps around windows, doors and vents for cracks which need to be sealed appropriately. Turn off radiators in rooms you aren’t occupying This one is a must and could draw you in a massive yearly saving by whittling down the temperature valves on your radiators when you aren’t in the room. If turning the radiator completely off is not something you want to consider, reducing the temperature by half can still make sure to keep the room at around 15-20C and for a room you don’t tend to venture into, is a comfortable temperature. Unplug devices once they are charged British Gas estimated that around 23% of a home’s electrical use could be eaten up by having devices still plugged in and charging once fully charged or by keeping devices on standby; this equates to around £200 per year.

cemetery project completed

Sheffield General Cemetery, one of Sheffield’s most fascinating locations, celebrated the end of a four-year £3.8 million conservation and repair programme this summer and on 25th October there wasa gathering of those involved to acknowledge their invaluable support for this high-profile conservation project, and to celebrate Sheffield’s heritage. The conclusion of the project celebrates the General Cemetery’s significance as a heritage treasure – “Sheffield’s Highgate” - whilst protecting its value as a tranquil green space and important wildlife habitat close to the city. Thanks to funding from the National Lottery, the Council carried out extensive structural repairs to the Cemetery’s famous catacombs, stabilised key monuments and provided support to the massive retaining walls which are now nearing 200 years old, ensuring the Cemetery can continue to be treasured and admired by future generations.

creating a winning mindset After seeing his side win their first game of the Championship season, Danny Röhl cut a satisfied figure post-match. The new Owls manager said he will enjoy the moment – before beginning the preparation for the next outing. Wednesday emerged 2-0 winners against Rotherham and on another day, the scoreline might have been more emphatic but Rohl is content

with the points. He said: “Today we got the reward for the performance, which is the win. We had the gameplan, the players carried out what we wanted them to do and we got the three points. “We showed them a lot of video, we had our plans, and I say well done to them for taking those plans out onto the pitch. “We played with intensity right from the start because this

is an intense division and that is what we must do. “We played on the front foot which is what we must do to win games. I can see the improvement in the short time I have been here and now we must continue and improve more and more.We are creating a winning mindset. In the last two games we were unfortunate to get nothing but today we got the win and it is nice to be part of a

winning dressing room today.” Röhl tasted the S6 atmosphere for the first time and beamed in his media conference, adding: “It was amazing to see the stadium and listen to the stadium like this. “The atmosphere was special and I thank all the fans for that. The fans have made me feel so welcome since my first day so to give them something to smile about today makes me very happy.”

McCann ready to offer rest after demanding run Grant McCann is looking to use the next few days as an opportunity to ease the aches and pains of Rovers’ walking wounded. With more than a dozen players ruled out through injury, McCann has only been able

to call upon a small group in recent weeks and admitted that has taken its toll on those available. But with a blank midweek ahead, he is hopeful of the chance to prioritise recovery in the first half of the week, before attention turns to

next weekend’s FA Cup tie against Accrington Stanley. “There’s lots of bumps and bruises, knocks and niggles,” he said. “People are just strapping themselves up and getting painkilling injections just to play. “It’s nice to have the

and can call upon experiences with the likes of Norwich City, Blackburn Rovers and Middlesbrough – the latter of whom he enjoyed promotion to the Premier League with in 2015/16. Ayala has amassed over 300 appearances

free week before we go into a busy week the following week so we’ll patch a few of them up in the early part of the week to get them ready for what’s to come.” Speaking in the aftermath of the win over Grimsby Town, McCann praised strike

throughout his senior career which began at Anfield in 2009 with 26 of those outings coming in the top flight. The Spanish defender has been out of contract since leaving Blackburn Rovers in the summer. Ayala will wear the number 4 shirt for the Millers. Everyone at Rotherham United would like to welcome Daniel to the club and wish him all the best during his time at AESSEAL New York Stadium.

duo Joe Ironside and Mo Faal for their recent resilience, despite not being at peak form during the game. “Mo and Joe probably weren’t at their productive best,” he said. “I always give them a lot of credit, they’re outstanding players. “Joe has been struggling with a really badly bruised foot that he’s having to get injections in to play. It shows the

character of him. “This is Mo’s third game in a week. It’s difficult - a young player coming from the U21s at West Brom and having missed a huge chunk of preseason where he was training on his own. It was a big ask. “We have what we have. We have the players available and we ask them to keep going and going. The boys put a huge shift in.”

CAPITAL PUNISHMENT FOR THE BLADES United’s fourth trip to the capital again ended in disappointment, despite an encouraging first half display. But the concession of four goals without reply in the second half condemned the Blades to a heavy loss against the Gunners. Boss Heckingbottom made two changes for the clash at the Emirates Stadium, with Slimane handed his first competitive start for the Blades. McBurnie (groin) missed out, with Brewster starting in attack, as Archer dropped to the bench, where he was joined by the fit-again Baldock. United started well and stifled the hosts for much of the opening 20 minutes or so, with Robinson clearing in the nick of time with Havertz ready to pounce after an initial effort from Rice deflected into a dangerous area, before Saka’s touch let him down after a swift break down the left by Martinelli. But moments before the half hour mark, the home side opened the scoring as NKETIAH created the opening with his first touch before slotting past Foderingham from a Rice pass. With half-time approaching, Foderingham was on his guard at the near post to tip round his near post from Martinelli before Trusty produced a timely intervention to head behind Smith-Rowe’s goal bound sliding strike. United got off to the worst possible start after the interval as NKETIAH fired home after

Foderingham had spilled Saka’s inswinging corner, with the goal standing following a VAR check for White’s involvement in challenges with the United stopper and then Bogle in the second phase. And before the hour, the contest was settled as NKETIAH fired home a third to complete his hat-trick from distance. Osborn and Archer were introduced from the bench and the former was cautioned almost immediately for a foul on the advancing Havertz, before White was smartly denied by Foderingham. Bogle was then carded for accumulation of fouls, with the last on Trossard to halt the Belgian’s progress. Baldock and Fleck returned to action getting some valuable minutes as the clocked ticked down, with United final change seeing Oné introduced for his senior debut, as Hamer departed the action. The Blades afternoon worsened as FABIO VIEIRA added a fourth from the penalty spot following a lengthy VAR check with Norwood, who was booked, adjudged to have fouled the substitute. Ten minutes of added time were signalled and from a corner in the 96th minute, Arsenal bagged a fifth as TOMIYASU scored, despite a possible handball in the build-up which was checked.
