SHEFFIELD’S FOOTBALL MUSEUM TAKES A STEP FORWARD

The prospect of a Sheffield football museum has taken a step forward with the launch of a new charity aimed at making the footballing heritage museum in the centre of Sheffield a reality. Sheffield Home of Football has recruited a new board of trustees and has established a newly registered charity which was approved on the 21st of August this year . It was formally launched last week with a celebration at Sheffield Town Hall in the company of the Lord Mayor Colin Ross, many of it’s new supporters, City MP’s, both football clubs, the Universities and

Sheffield City Councillors. Former Sheffield MP and Minister of Sport, Richard Caborn, Sheffield MP’s Clive Betts and Paul Blomfield attended along with former International referee Keith Hackett and Former Sheffield United and England Legend Tony Currie and his wife. Kate Joseph’s the Chief Executive of Sheffield City Council said “It’s an exciting new development and now with this new charity and a clear plan, we have something we can work with to make sure this becomes a reality”. The event was also attended by former Master and Mistress Cutler James & Jo and Mistress

Cutler along with staff and students from Sheffield Hallam University. New Chair of Trustees Councillor Denise Fox said “Enormous thanks to all our new trustees and supporters and everyone for coming along to support us”. She also praised the support from sponsors the Little Mesters Brewing Co of Sheffield creators of Sheffield Home of Football Ale and Lager which is going to be a major driver in the fundraising efforts for the new charity. “It’s was necessary to get all the right people in the room to hear our vision for a Heritage Museum in Sheffield city centre

alongside a programme of education about Sheffield‘s unique role in the development of the modern game of football from the 19 century to the modern day, said Denise. “In the New Year, we will be developing a series of football walking tours around the city with our football app, and organising a series of lectures and other events to raise the profile of our work in Sheffield. We also want to work with schools, community and businesses groups to undertake outreach and develop this element of our work”. “Meanwhile, our search for a building continues,

and we are appealing to anyone with suitable premises in the centre of Sheffield to come and speak to us and once we know the location and cost of this, we will launch a public appeal for support and put bids in to the National Lottery private trusts and other funders such to really accelerate our fundraising to make it a reality” added Denise. The charity are also seeking individuals and corporate sponsorship for their plans and anyone interested in this should contact them via their website at sheffieldhomeoffootball. org

LIAM’S DEFINITELY KICKING OFF HIS ANNIVERSARY TOUR IN SHEFFIELD Liam Gallagher opens his Definitely Maybe 30 years Anniversary Tour in Sheffield at the Utilita Arena on Saturday 1 June 2024 tickets go on sale 9am on Friday 20 October 2023 from www. utiltaarenasheffield. co.uk. It would be hard to top Liam Gallagher’s biblical Knebworth Park shows, which proved to be some of the biggest live events of 2022. But the always ambitious icon has once again excelled himself with news of a tour that will be bigger than biblical. Liam will celebrate the 30th anniversary of the release of Oasis’s all-conquering and massively influential

debut album by embarking upon the ‘Definitely Maybe 30 Years’ arena tour in 2024. The tour will see Liam perform the ‘Definitely Maybe’ album in full for the first time, along with some select b-sides from the era. The sets will of course be packed with classics – ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll Star’, ‘Live Forever’, ‘Supersonic’ and ‘Cigarettes & Alcohol’, to name but a few. But it will also be a rare opportunity to see other album tracks that have rarely, if ever, been performed since the mid-‘90s, including ‘Up In The Sky’ and ‘Digsy’s Dinner’. And there are numerous fan favourites that could be performed from the other songs that

were released during the ‘Definitely Maybe’ era, which could potentially include another big hit in the shape of ‘Whatever’ as well as deep cuts such as ‘Fade Away’, ‘Listen Up’ and ‘Sad Song’. The 12-date ‘Definitely Maybe 30 Years’ tour starts right in Sheffield on Saturday 1 June 2024. Liam says, “I’m bouncing around the house to announce the Definitely Maybe Tour. The most important album of the ‘90s bar none. I wouldn’t be anywhere without it and neither would you, so let’s celebrate together LG x” After becoming the foremost frontman of his generation with Oasis, Liam Gallagher’s solo career has been a

story of a remarkable rebirth – and one that has introduced his talents to a whole new audience. It has seen him score five UK #1 albums in just six years: his three studio sets, ‘As You Were’, ‘Why Me? Why Not.’ and ‘C’MON YOU KNOW’ plus the live

records ‘MTV Unplugged’ and ‘Knebworth 22’. His comeback has been capped by two unforgettable performances at the BRIT Awards, winning Rock ‘n’ Roll Star of the Year at the GQ Awards, and landing his highest position on the singles

charts in thirteen years with ‘Everything’s Electric’. Liam Gallagher’s Definitely Maybe 30 years Anniversary Tour opens in Sheffield at the Utilita Arena on Sat 1 June 2024 - tickets go on sale 9am on Friday 20 October from www. utiltaarenasheffield.co.uk

ocd awareness week will-aid week cycle route markets development Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is all too often misunderstood and no two cases are ever the same, an expert has said. Lynn Crilly, an author and counsellor, also said the condition can strike at any age. Speaking to shine a light on OCD Awareness Week, Lynn said: “OCD is a mental disorder and like all mental disorders not only has it a huge stigma attached, it can also be fearfully misunderstood as it cannot be seen by the visual eye, so therefore it can be harder to diagnose. For the sufferer, who will have no doubt thought they were losing their mind up until diagnosis, it will be very difficult to come to terms with. They’ll have known for some time that something could potentially be wrong, but their brain can trick them into thinking all is normal, so the diagnosis of a legitimate mental illness is often a shock. It typically first starts to significantly interfere with a person’s life during early adulthood, although problems can develop at any age. No two cases are ever the same, they are all unique to the individual sufferer, below is a summary of the familiar ‘facts’ which are often quoted in relation to obsessive compulsive disorder.” OCD FACTBOX: What is OCD? OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) is a mental health disorder that causes people to suffer from obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviours. OCD obsessions are reoccurring and unwanted thoughts, urges or images which can cause distress and anxiety. Examples of symptoms include needing things orderly or symmetrical, doubting

and having difficulty tolerating uncertainty and fear of contamination. OCD compulsions are repetitive behaviours you feel you must perform to reduce anxiety related to obsessions or to prevent something bad from happening. Examples of this are persistently cleaning, checking and counting. How many people are impacted by it? OCD affects approximately 70 million individuals worldwide. Although it can occur in anyone at any age, the general age for onset is between 8-12 years, and late teen-early adulthood years. However, it is a hard disorder to diagnose, a German study showed a 70% misdiagnosis rate in 2010. This is because symptoms show similarity to those of anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, OCPD and other mental health disorders. It can also just go unrecognised, with sufferers thought to sometimes spend 10 years untreated. How can it be treated? There are two main treatments for OCD. The first is ‘talking therapy’, which is talking about your obsessions and compulsions without actually acting on them. Confronting fears helps to calm anxiety and therefore overcome the disorder. People with fairly mild OCD will require about 8-20 sessions of this treatment, whereas more severe cases will need a longer course. The second treatment is medication, typically an antidepressant medicine which can help by altering the balance of chemicals in your brain. This is used when talking therapy does not help, or if the condition is severe. To decide diagnosis and treatment, a GP or the NHS should be contacted.

During the current costof-living crisis, the annual Will Aid campaign which sees solicitors across the UK volunteering their time to write Wills throughout November, represents a great opportunity to tick writing your will off your to-do-list, and ensure your family’s future is protected November is Will Aid’s annual UK-wide fundraising campaign involving nine of the UK’s leading charities that share the proceeds: ActionAid, Age UK, British Red Cross, Christian Aid, NSPCC, Save the Children, Sightsavers, SCIAF (Scotland) and Trocaire (N. Ireland). Will Aid is open and appointments are now available. Like previous years there is expected to be a high demand, so people are encouraged to book an appointment now with a participating solicitor, which they can find via the Will Aid website. Will Aid has been running since 1988 and is open to all adults. The campaign has encouraged more than 350,000 people to write their will with a regulated and insured solicitor and, in so doing has raised over £24 million in donations, and many millions more in pledged legacies. The suggested voluntary donation is £100 for a single will and £180 for a pair of mirror wills. Peter de Vena Franks, Campaign Director for Will Aid, said: “The money raised each year is incredibly important for each of our partner charities. I encourage anyone who does not yet have a will to use this opportunity to protect loved ones and causes close to them.” Jonathan Chase, Chair of Will Aid, added: “We are very grateful to all the solicitors, new and returning, who selflessly volunteer their time to write thousands of wills without their normal fee each year. Not only does their philanthropy help thousands of local people protect their loved ones and causes close to them with a professionally written will, but it also helps the Will Aid partner charities continue their life-changing work.”

Temporary road changes have been made permanent on the Sheaf Valley Cycle Route following a more than a 62% increase in cycle trips in the past two years. In May 2022 a number of alterations were made to roads in the area on a temporary basis to create a safer, low-traffic, active travel route between Sheffield City Centre and Norton Hammer. The Sheaf Valley Cycle Route (SVCR) connects other existing and planned cycle routes in the city, helping to make cycling more accessible, safer and a more convenient choice for everyone, including families and young children. These schemes include Castlegate’s Grey to Green, the City CentreAttercliffe-Darnall route, alterations in Nether Edge, as well as the number of changes taking place in Kelham, Neepsend and the wider city centre. Proposed bus priority schemes in the south west of the city will also complement the SVCR, supporting improved journey times for bus passengers and other road users along these roads. Perception surveys from local residents around the SVCR show 37% of respondents feel that they walk more than they did before the interventions were put in place. Of those that say they cycle, 45% said that the scheme has resulted in them cycling more than they did before. The route will give people who do not have access to cars the opportunity to travel by cycle or on foot more safely. Walking trips are estimated to have increased on average by around 15% across the full route. This includes a 35% increase on parts of Saxon Rd and 39% on parts of London Rd. In addition, the route helps to connect some of the most in demand areas in the city, including the train station, bus station, Sheffield Hallam University, a number of schools and colleges, Victoria Quays and West Bar.

Enabling works to prepare Rotherham Markets for future redevelopment are now underway as part of a key milestone in the borough’s town centre masterplan. Cabinet Member for Jobs and the Local Economy, Cllr Denise Lelliott joined Ward Councillors and partners Henry Boot Construction to break ground on the site, which will also include the addition of a new library. Once works are complete, visitors will benefit from a refurbished indoor and covered market, extensive public realm, a modern and accessible central library and improved links to the town centre and college. Cllr Denise Lelliott said: “The redevelopment is a testament to our dedication to preserving the heritage of our town while embracing a dynamic future. This initiative will not only breathe new life into our community, but also provide economic opportunities for our local businesses.” “The reinvention of the markets is not just a facelift, but a holistic reimagining that aims to boost the local economy, celebrate our diverse community, and provide an accessible, enjoyable space for all.” The reimagined space will promote both seasoned and emerging local businesses, providing varied offerings to shoppers and fostering a prosperous trading environment build upon the existing mix of shops and services with the addition of a

new food hub and dining area. Embedded within the redevelopment is the addition of a cuttingedge library. Offering more than just books, the library will become a new cultural, leisure and learning destination and will include a children’s area, café, a dedicated IT space and a business development facility. Craig Finn, Director at Henry Boot Construction said: “Commencement of the enabling works are exciting first steps in this transformative project for Rotherham. Creating new and vibrant urban destinations is part of the Henry Boot DNA and we’re thrilled to be partnering with Rotherham Council to bring the vision from the drawing-board to reality.” The RAIN Building and former Chart Arms pub on Eastwood Lane have already been demolished, with the main building works expected to start in early 2024. Rotherham Council received funding from the government’s Future High Street Fund to pay for part of the improvements at the market with additional funding secured from the council and the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority. rose garden cafe A decision on the longterm future of the Rose Garden Café in Graves Park is to be made at an Extraordinary Charity Trustee Sub-Committee on Wednesday 18 October. The Charity SubCommittee will be asked to vote on the recommendations in the Council’s latest report, which are to pause looking at the new build or demolition option and agree to pursue the two remaining viable options – a full or partial restoration of the existing building. Proposals on the long-term options were heard at The Charity Trustee Sub-Committee in October last year. Since then, a feasibility study has been commissioned to understand the condition of the existing building, the level of repair and refurbishment works required and the options for the café building. All the necessary surveys have now been carried out and the list of options has been developed and appraised. Once a decision is made at committee, there will then be a city-wide consultation exercise and the Council will continue to work with Brewkitchen, the café operator, the Friends of Graves Park group, the Save the Rose Garden Café Campaign group, and

all other stakeholders. Councillor Ian Auckland, Chair of the Charity Trustee Sub-Committee said: “In October 2022, the council’s Charity Trust Sub-Committee approved five options for further investigation for Rose Garden Café and at next month’s committee we will look at the current proposals. The Charity Trust Sub-Committee will be provided with all the relevant information and consider all factors, including the consultation, costs, and available funding. If the committee members agree the recommendations, I will want to move quickly after that to secure the future of the Rose Garden Café in a partnership with the community. We will continue to work closely with all stakeholders to progress this project as quickly as we can. The café has recently been added to the South Yorkshire heritage list which shows that it is an important asset and loved by the local community, so we want to make sure that we make the right decision for the future.” The full feasibility report outlining all the options for Rose Garden Café is on the Council website - www. sheffield.gov.uk/parkssport-recreation/rosegarden-cafe-updates

Sheffield’s Festival of Sci-fi, Magic and Halloween RETURNS THIS WEEKEND greasbrough Out of this World, Sheffield spooky festival of Sci-Fi & Magic returns this Sunday (22/10) to various locations around the city centre, 10:30am to 5:30pm. Back for its ninth year, this free city centre event celebrates all things otherworldly and is for anyone who enjoys sci-fi, comic books, gaming, magic, illusion, Halloween and all things spooky. Spread across the city centre, it attracts thousands of adults and children (many in costume), who come to see and enjoy this weird, wonderful and wacky event.

Sci Fi, Comics & Gaming Winter Garden, Tudor Square, Town Hall, Millennium Square and the Peace Gardens

The ever popular sci-fi, comic book, gaming and fantasy areas are home to comic book artists, costumers, trade stalls and displays. You’ll encounter your favourite heroes and villains including Darth Vader, Stormtroopers, Ghostbusters and The Superheroes to name just a few. A popular zone to find, or photobomb, your favourite superhero, get hold of the latest character, comicon and

gaming must haves and enter our Baby Kong set if you dare. Share a dance with our children’s film and animation favourites meet and greets, time travel (back to the 80s) with Transformers and enjoy an Instagram moment at the Barbie Box. See if you can spot the Crystal Ball globe to find out your fortunes. Loveable prankster robot Sparky is always fun, but watch out for his hidden water pistol. With Pokemon, Baby Kong, Tardis and Dalek displays and a Star Trek Nerf range – there’s plenty for everyone to see and do!

Magic & Illusion Millennium Square, Town Hall and Peace Gardens A programme of mystifying illusion and magic - some of the UK’s best magicians and illusionists can be found in this zone. Magic that will astound you - from sleight of hand to the weird and wonderful! Joining us this year in the Magic zone for your delight and entertainment is Dr Phantasma and his ever changing cast of the unusual and the strange, including Dangerous Steve’s thrilling

OWLS ANNOUNCE Danny Röhl AS NEW MANAGER HONOURS EVEN IN U21 DERBY The Owls have confirmed Danny Röhl as their new manager, and here we delve into the German’s everrising career. At just 34 years old,

Röhl’s experience as a coach has seen him go head-to-head with Europe’s elite, plying his trade at the very top of the game. Having had his playing career cut

short through injury, Röhl began working as a video analyst with RB Leipzig’s youth sides, before moving into a coaching role with the younger teams at

a time when former Manchester United boss Ralf Rangnick was first team manager. He later stepped up to first team coaching duties at Die Roten Bullen in 2016 under Ralph Hassenhuttl. Having gained promotion from 2. Bundesliga, the pair guided RB Leipzig to the runners-up spot in the club’s maiden top flight campaign, qualifying for the Champions League. In 2017/18, RBL finished in sixth place and reached the quarterfinals of the Europa League. Röhl made his first

switch to England in 2018, joining Premier League Southampton with Hassenhuttl, successfully helping the Saints to survival. He departed St Mary’s the following season for European giants Bayern Munich. He was assistant manager to coach Hansi Flick and would enjoy playing a key role in one of Bayern’s most successful campaigns in recent history. The club won the Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal and Champions League title to complete the coveted treble in 2019/20.

The following season, Bayern retained their Bundesliga trophy while also triumphing in the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup. Röhl’s success with Flick saw the duo make another step up, this time to international level with the German national team at the end of the 2020/21 season. He left Germany last month and now makes his first foray into management with the Owls, backed by a plethora of success in his burgeoning career to date.

of games we’ve been quite comfortable in the way that we’ve attacked teams, pressed them and made it hard for them. “But in too many games we’ve let that slip and conceded sloppy goals that’s meant we haven’t come away with the three points.

“In this one we took our chances when we were on top and it meant that although we were frustrated to concede a goal in the 98th minute, we’d done the work to take the three points. “In other games we haven’t put those chances away and it’s cost us.”

Westbrooke relishing midfield relationships at Rovers Zain Westbrooke is loving life in the thriving Rovers midfield. The 26-year-old has been one of the shining stars for Rovers so far this term and netted his first goal for the club in the 4-1 win over Sutton United. Westbrooke believes

Aaron Little joins as Head of Women’s Football Sheffield United is delighted to welcome the club’s new head

building good relationships in the middle of the park has been key to his own form, and Rovers’ upturn in results. “It is enjoyable,” he said. “We’ve been playing a nice brand of football one that I believe I look best in and suit best. “With Closey in midfield,

we’re building a good relationship in there, looking to dictate games. “Adding Rowey, Biggo and George in there as well, it’s been really enjoyable. “We have to be. Teams are going to try to stop us playing, as we saw against Sutton.

“You have to have tactics and systems to try to work in. We’re all comfortable in rotating, so it’s all good.” Westbrooke welcomed the ruthlessness Rovers showed in seeing off Sutton and making their dominance of the ball count at the weekend. He said: “I think in a lot

of women’s and girls’ football, Aaron Little. Following the additional significant commitments to women’s football made in the summer, with the transition towards a full-time playing model and introduction of a Professional Game Academy, Little joins the club with the aim of driving further success both on and off the field. Little brings

with him a wealth of experience in women’s football, most recently at Women’s Super League side Everton FC, and is relishing the opportunity to take Sheffield United Women to the next level. “Sheffield United is a huge football club and it’s a pleasure to be joining at a time when the club is enhancing their commitment to the women’s game,” he said. “We have a fantastic opportunity here to lead the way for women’s football in this region and I’m looking forward to taking the next steps on this exciting journey.”

United’s chief executive officer, Stephen Bettis, commented: “In the summer we reaffirmed our commitment to our women’s team and its continued development. Despite a number of challenges, we believe we are going in the right direction. “Aaron’s appointment is a major step for us, he brings a wealth of experience and we are keen for him to keep us on a trajectory that keeps the club competitive in the progressive world of women’s football.”

The Owls and the Blades went head-to-head at Hillsborough and shared the derby honours. It was second v first in the PDL2 and the close encounter forecast duly unfolded, with Wednesday twice coming from behind to take a share of the spoils. The Blades hit the front eight minutes in – moments after the Owls might have taken the lead. Keeper Luke Faxon acrobatically parried a curling set piece from Cian Flannery that triggered a swift counter from which Andre Brooks sent Owen Hampson scampering in on goal and the midfielder finished calmly beneath the outrushing Pierce Charles. The hosts’ shot-stopper had to be alert to thwart Brooks immediately after the restart, darting off his line to block on the angle. Wednesday composed themselves and sought a route back into the contest. Bailey Cadamarteri span on the edge of the box and fired a low drive that Faxon was relieved to see whistle past his far post. The threatening figure of Cadamarteri caused concerns in the Blades’ rearguard and the inform hitman was just off

target again after shaking off his marker down the right side of the area. Wednesday went closer still three minutes before half time when Ciaran Brennan got full purchase on a Rio Shipston free kick but Faxon sprang to his right and tipped away from danger. The Owls started the second half as they ended the first and got their reward only two minutes in. Dovydas Sasnauskas sliced a Sam Reed feed onto his own crossbar and Cadamarteri was on the spot to pick up the pieces from close range. Wednesday pressed for a second but were caught on the counter on 59 minutes. Antwoine Hackford nicked possession 30 yards out and advanced to tee up Jili Buyabu, who drilled low into the bottom corner to restore the advantage. But the Owls were far from finished and pushed numbers forward for a second leveller, which arrived deep into stoppage time. Reed sent in another dangerous cross that the Blades failed to clear and substitute Luke Cook executed a fierce drive on the turn that gave Faxon no chance.
