ART IN ThE gARDENS RETURNS TO bOTANICAl gARDENS

art in the Gardens, one of the largest outdoor art markets in the north of England, returns on 2-3 september at Sheffield’s beautiful Botanical Gardens. Visitors will be able to experience collections of work from artists and craft makers from Sheffield and across the UK, all in the idyllic surroundings of the gardens. Artist Wendy Carlton has exhibited her work at Art in the Gardens every year since the event started in 2004 and will be showcasing her work at the Central Dome Pavilion. Wendy said: “The first Art in the Gardens went ahead in 2004 and has catered for both professional

and amateur artists throughout its history, with the Open Art Exhibition and Celebrity Portrait competition.” Exhibits and stalls will include fine art and crafts, ceramics, jewellery, sculpture, paintings, portraiture, glass art, wire art, papercut art, original print works, plus the annual Open Art Competition, a Home and Gardens showcase, Sheffield Young Artists display, and a fantastic selection of food and refreshment stalls. Wendy continued: “The flourishing and popular event means such a lot to many local and national artists who return year upon

year. Sheffield Botanical Gardens is a fantastic location, and the pavilion is the perfect setting for my paintings. The vast walls, tropical plants and stunning Victorian glazed roof provide the perfect backdrop for my large, colourful paintings which nestle among the greenery. I am proud that my customers have seen my work develop from the stylised large flower heads of the original logo to my current ranges of meadowlands, abstracts, landscapes, and an array of custom-made homeware products printed from my art. Art in the Gardens is a fabulous event, my favourite to take part in. I see it as my ‘Happy

Place’ and long may it continue!”

Councillor Martin Smith, chair of the Economic Development and Skills Policy Committee, said: “Since 2004, Art in the Gardens has been a highlight of Sheffield’s cultural calendar, bringing artists and makers from across the UK to one of our most beautiful green spaces. The event is a fantastic opportunity for visitors to discover work from well-established and up and coming artists, as well as pick up original pieces of art, prints and crafts. Sheffield truly is a creative and innovative city at its heart, and I hope that we’ll see lots of

people come to celebrate art and creativity in all its forms over the weekend.”

The premier sponsor for Art in the Gardens 2023 is Graysons

Solicitors. The event is also sponsored by Volta Creative, and the featured charity is Roundabout.

sO HOw CaN I fall aslEEp fasTER?

The Internet’s most Googled question relating to sleep is, “How can I fall asleep faster?”, according to new research.

The study, conducted by sleep experts, analysed the search volume for various terms and queries relating to sleep to determine the most-searched-for sleep question from across the globe. The data looked at the search terms for various sleep queries within the past 12 months.

1. “How can I fall asleep faster?” - 215,000 monthly global searches. Melatonin is a key to sleep; it is the hormone secreted by the pineal gland, and a lack of melatonin is one likely reason you cannot fall asleep quickly. Melatonin is affected by an inconsistent sleeping pattern. Waking up and falling asleep at various times can confuse your circadian rhythm, your body’s internal clock. Your circadian rhythm regulates the release of melatonin, the sleep hormone, so without a consistent sleep-wake cycle, the body will be confused and not know when to release the hormone. You should maintain a regular sleeping pattern, which can help you fall asleep faster at bedtime. Melatonin is also affected by light sources, including TVs, phones, and tablets; therefore, you should avoid using these devices before you sleep. A dark room is excellent for melatonin production, as the pineal gland responds to darkness by secreting the hormone.

2. “How much sleep do you need?” - 105,000 monthly global searches. The amount of sleep an individual requires depends on their age, health conditions, and previous sleep

ClaIMING CHIld TRUsT fUNds

quality. Infants require a minimum of 12-16 hours of sleep daily, including naps. Commonly, newborns will be asleep more than they are awake, as sleep is essential for their development. As a child ages, the hours of sleep they need will decrease; toddlers will need between 11-14 hours of sleep, including naps, and those in nursery, 3–5-year-olds, will need 10-13 hours of sleep. 6–12-year-olds will require 9-12 hours of sleep, and 13–18-yearolds will require 8-10 hours. Adults require a minimum of seven hours of sleep a night. The older you become, the more hours of sleep your will need because your sleeping pattern can change. It is common for older adults to sleep more lightly, have trouble falling asleep, or wake up multiple times in the night. Pregnant women will require at least 8-10 hours of sleep, which is vital for the baby’s and mother’s health. Those ill with a cold or flu will require at least 7-9 hours of sleep, which can help the body go into repair mode.

3. “What is sleep paralysis?” - 90,900 monthly global searches. Sleep paralysis is a condition that occurs when REM sleep is disrupted, typically when one is waking up or falling asleep. It is harmless, and some people will only experience it once or twice in their lifetime. Numerous things can happen during sleep paralysis, but the most common thing is the paralysed feeling where you cannot move, speak or even open your eyes. When you experience sleep paralysis, you may feel frightened, as if someone is in the room with you

or something is pushing you down, though these feelings will dissipate within a few minutes. It is not clear why sleep paralysis occurs, though it has been linked to insomnia, narcolepsy, PTSD, and disrupted sleeping patterns. You may be able to prevent this by improving your sleeping habits. Ensure you get at least seven hours of sleep a night, maintain a consistent sleep pattern, and get regular exercise.

4. “Why can’t I sleep?”89,900 monthly global searches. Though this question is highly subjective, and a doctor should assess those with insomnia, there are a few potential reasons as to why someone can’t sleep. One likely reason is stress and anxiety, which can result in poor sleep. Numerous factors can contribute to someone feeling anxious, including work stress or the consumption of caffeine or alcohol. If you are consuming alcohol frequently and interfering with your sleep, this should be reduced or stopped. Any caffeine consumption should not be had later in the day. Another reason could be an uncomfortable environment; as aforementioned, the environment you sleep in significantly impacts your sleep quality.

5. “What is sleep apnoea?” - 80,900 monthly global searches. Sleep apnoea is a sleep disorder where breathing stops and starts while you sleep, and it can be severe if not diagnosed or treated. Symptoms include gasping, snorting, choking noises, loud snoring, and waking up often through the night. Those with sleep apnoea may feel tired and have headaches or mood swings during the day. If you think you have sleep apnoea, you must see a GP, who will refer you to a specialist sleep clinic for tests. Sleep apnoea is often treated by a CPAP Machine, where a mask is worn overnight that pumps air into your mouth or nose while you sleep.

A national defibrillator and CPR training scheme for grassroots football clubs has opened to new applications this week, after Fabrice Muamba’s ‘thank you’ video to a small heart charity sent applications soaring to almost 4,000 for just 100 life-saving defibrillators. The popular life-saving campaign is funded and delivered by family-run heart charity Red Sky Foundation and rolled-out by Team Grassroots - the UK’s largest independent grassroots football organisation. Successful applicants receive a free defibrillator and online CPR training for unlimited members of their club and community. The mobile defibrillators can be taken to every location where the team plays or trains, improving access for all.

The Grassroots Defibrillator Programme, which is now in its third year, has funded over 300 defibrillators to date and has trained thousands of members across more than 100 grassroots clubs. This follows the Premier League’s national campaign which gave 2,000 grassroots sites access to a defibrillator back in 2021, amongst other campaigns. Paul Kirton, Founder of Team Grassroots, the organisation helping to deliver the campaign comments: “The demand for defibrillators at a grassroots level is testament to the awareness raised by the household names who have been affected, such as Fabrice Muamba and Christian Eriksen. The few clubs that could afford to buy one now have, and the various schemes have made many more available, but the fact that demand is still so high confirms the need for additional funding to get one in reach of every football player in the UK, at every level.”

According to new research published today, more than half of 16-18-year-olds are unaware of the existence of Government Child Trust Funds (CTFs) — with more than half not knowing how to claim one.

The long-term taxfree savings account was launched by the Government in 2005 for all children born in the UK between 1 September 2002 and 2 January 2011. Money was put in by the Government and parents had the option to top it up. The first CTFs came to maturity in 2020 and children will continue to reach the age to claim theirs up to 2029.

According to recent data from the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), there is currently £1.7bn in lost CTFs and the HMRC website values the average account worth £2,100. However, the research shows a shocking lack of awareness amongst young people, who risk missing out on money that is due to them. Even many young people who are aware of CTFs are unsure if they are eligible or how to go about claiming their pot of money. Their parents are similarly unaware, even of the CTF initiative itself. Teenagers who are planning to access their funds are mostly opting to put the money in a savings account, towards a university education, or to purchase a car.

Andrew Russell comments: “Child Trust Funds are a leveller because they were available to all children born in the UK at that time, regardless of background. For young

people on the cusp of adulthood, gaining access to a lump sum like this offers a unique opportunity to engage positively with money, just as they become financially independent. But too many teens risk missing out on this oncein-a-lifetime chance to kickstart their financial future, simply because they don’t know about it. Similarly, we risk losing the opportunity to empower a whole generation of young people with financial skills, at a time when they have never been more motivated to engage.”

Sharon Davies, CEO of Young Enterprise, adds: “In so many households, worries about managing money have been exacerbated by the cost-of-living crisis. It is therefore crucial for young people to be informed and educated about all resources available, to ensure they are equipped with the skills to create a positive relationship with money, and a path to a secure future. Child Trust Funds have the potential to be a life-changing tool that a significant number of 16–18-year-olds have no knowledge about, even though they present an incredible opportunity to help young people learn to engage with money management from an earlier stage in life. In our 60th year of helping millions of young people, we are excited to raise awareness around the availability of Child Trust Funds, in collaboration with teachers, and provide beneficial financial education resources to young people from an early age.”

YOUNG aRTIsTs’ ExHIbITION

An exhibition celebrating young artists’ creativity opened at The Winter Garden, Sheffield on Tuesday 29th August, 3pm for a week.

The Young Artists Open Exhibition is a massive celebration of creativity, showcasing the talent and creativity we have in the City. A callout was issued inviting young artists aged 4-19 years from across the city to submit their artwork and the response has been amazing with over 100 pieces set to be displayed. This open invitation has seen artwork created at home, with friends, and in schools and groups and includes a wide variety of mediums, such as mixed media, drawing, painting, sculpture, and origami. A collaboration between Ignite Imaginations, a participatory arts charity and Sheffield Healthy Holidays, this open exhibition offers a unique opportunity for young people to see their work displayed publicly at an iconic local venue. In addition, through this partnership, IgniteImaginations has been able to offer over 100 hours of free creativity to young people across the city this summer. Over 19 professional artists have delivered workshops in 8 schools and 4 community groups across Sheffield. As well as creating individual

artworks to take home, the groups have worked with the artists to create collaborative pieces, which will also be available for viewing at the exhibition. Luisa Golob, CEO of Ignite Imaginations said “Through our work in the community we’re lucky to be able to see the creativity of young people first-hand, our vision for this exhibition is to be able to share that creativity, skill, talent and effort with the city in a huge celebration of art. We hope this will be something the young people involved will remember and feel proud of and that will be a wonderful legacy” Young Artists Exhibition opens at The Winter Garden, Sheffield on Tuesday 29th August 2023 at 3pm and runs until Tuesday 5th September 2023 at 3pm. Free to attend and open to all, we hope the people of Sheffield will come along and enjoy these community artworks. Ignite Imaginations are inviting families to come along and join in their FREE creative fun in The Winter Garden on Thursday 31st August 10-12 noon or 1-3pm or Friday 1st September 1012 noon or 1-3pm. There will be an opportunity to experience dance, drama and art activities across 2hours, which is also part of the Sheffield Showcase.

Heritage Open Days (HODs)

returns this September with thousands of free events and experiences. Brought to you by the National Trust, supported by players of People’s Postcode Lottery and run by thousands of local organisations and volunteers, HODs brings people together to celebrate their heritage, community and history.

The packed programme of more than 5000 events features everything from historic houses to factories, museums to music halls, formal gardens to graveyards, places, spaces and communities across the country who are once again hosting free events this autumn. Hundreds of activities will adopt this year’s theme, Creativity Unwrapped, sharing England’s colourful history of creativity. The festival will celebrate the experts and enthusiastic amateurs whose passions and skills add something special to our daily lives. Liam Montgomery, Heritage

Open Days Marketing & Projects Manager says: “Whether it’s art, music, writing, or another outlet, creativity moves us and shapes our history and culture. This year organisers have once again come up trumps and created a stellar programme of events which put the spotlight on the people and places who give England’s heritage the X-factor and inspire festivalgoers to engage with thousands of years of creativity. And it is the organisers who make this possible, and whose hard work enables over a million people to engage with heritage, for free, on their doorstep, every September.”

The festival features thousands of events and activities across the country including a wide range of places that usually charge, free sites that put on extra special events for the festival and places that aren’t usually open to the public. Take a behind the scene tour of the iconic Tyne tunnels, visit the Gothic Temple - a splendid

historic folly within the National Trust’s Stowe, and explore that most iconic item of creativity, the television, at the BFI Film & Television Archive. For a tasty creative fix head to a gelato flavour exploration in North Shields. And had you ever wondered about the creativity behind a brick? Now you can at Hampshire’s The Brickworks Museum. See where the magic happens and meet the talented team who build incredible jukeboxes at Sound Leisure in West Yorkshire. And there is plenty for the younger generation. Take a ride on an iconic London bus, have a day out at Bradwell Abbey Medieval Family Fun Day, a take a trip through time at Lancashire Police Museum, located in Lancaster Castle’s former prison. New Wave is a series of innovative youth-led events being produced for this year’s Heritage Open Days festival. Enjoy the interactive Cranford Park ‘Out of Time’ - Interactive Maze, sing your

heart out at a Shanty Social in Portsmouth, and discover the amazing and secret history of Oxford’s graffiti through the ages in a Hidden Heritage Graffiti Trail. Founded in 1994, Heritage Open Days has captured imaginations for almost 30 years. Last year more than 45,000 organisers and volunteers ran nearly 5,000 events across the country, attracting one million visits. Around one-third of visitors had not visited a heritage site/event in the past year while 80% of festival-goers said their visit made them more proud of their local area. A visitor from 2022 said “Such passionate individuals who were generous enough to share their knowledge. Forever grateful for their time and effort. It allowed me to connect with sections of the society that I do not normally interact with within the specific context.” And organisers see a real benefit: “I feel that Heritage Open Days is really important, both to provide access to less visited/

usually closed places and also to bring about more of a diverse audience than usual, opening up places for people who may usually avoid heritage attractions.”

Laura Chow, head of charities at People’s Postcode Lottery, said, “Once again Heritage Open Days organisers have come out in force for this fantastic opportunity to explore, celebrate, and enjoy England’s national heritage. It’s wonderful that our players are helping to ensure Heritage Open Days events are accessible and free for all. In fact, Postcode Lottery players have now raised over £1.1 billion to support thousands of great causes, including this amazing event and many others run by the National Trust.” Heritage Open Days is brought to you by the National Trust with support from players of People’s Postcode Lottery. Every single Heritage Open Days event is free, including access to many sites that usually charge for admission.

When Daphne’s Flight completed their last tour in 2018 and after a handful of euphoric festival performances in 2019 which garnered them an army of new followers, the stage was set for a 25th anniversary tour in 2020 with a brand new album to launch and celebrate. Then the world turned upside down. What followed were two frustrating years of postponed dates and a career sitting idle, unable to capitalise on the momentum that had been building since their 2017 reunion tour. Now the heavy cloud of the pandemic has lifted and the stage is set for a euphoric return to touring for Daphne’s Flight. With a heavy heart, Christine Collister pulled out of the band for personal reasons at the beginning of 2022 so Chris, Helen, Julie and Mel asked Miranda Sykes (Show of Hands) to join the band. The result in rehearsals couldn’t be better, the blend of personalities and musical synergy has given new energy and hope to Daphne’s and so a new chapter begins. Five individually successful solo artists in their own rights, together they create a unique and unparalleled force, empowering women of all ages, producing music that is relatable, moving and uplifting and creating a chemistry on stage that is both joyful and contagious. Ask any musician what they are most looking forward to post pandemic and the resounding answer will be performing on stage again to live audiences.

Enjoy a taste of Mediterranean sunshine this September as we welcome back the acclaimed West Yorkshire Savoyards, the ‘Savs’, to Penistone with their touring production of ‘The Gondoliers’, one of the most popular operas to come from the Gilbert and Sullivan partnership. Sullivan’s sparkling music and Gilbert’s humorous plot twists and topsy turvy wit, combined with colourful costumes, lively dances and beautiful melodies, and accompanied by a professional orchestra, are guaranteed to make you leave the theatre with a smile on your face. It’s pure joy from start to finish. The ‘Savs’, a Gilbert and Sullivan touring company made up of hand-picked singers and musicians from across the north of England, have been delighting audiences and building up a following throughout Yorkshire and abroad for many years. This year we welcome them back again under the direction of Graham Weston with the orchestra under the musical direction of Oliver Longstaff.

Coronation Street: Jenny returns to the Rovers with Stephen in tow and tells Daisy that she signed on the dotted line and no longer owns the Rovers. Carla tells Roy her symptoms are consistent with LSD - but Roy when reveals this to Peter, will he put two and two together? Paul presents Summer with one of Shelly’s stolen laptops for her birthday. Stu is torn when Dom assures him that he only wants what’s best for Eliza. When Ed reveals he’s put in a bid for the plot of land, Ronnie’s forced to explain there’s no money because he blew it all on Newton & Ridley shares which are now worthless.

Emmerdale:

Liam & Charity go on a date - with the doctor unaware he’s the subject of a bet! Nate discovers Corey shifting guns for gangster Harry - but he & Caleb are too late to recover them. At the Hide, Victoria needs help and as she’s moaning about needing a new chef, Suni jumps at the chance to try out. It’s Amelia’s birthday and with dad Dan in prison she feels miserable and alone. Claudette has a favour to ask of her son Charles.

Eastenders: Anna and Gina stare motionless at their long lost mum, as Cindy tries to explain herself. Knowing that she’s got a LOT of history to lay bare, Cindy starts to open up but the girls are so overwhelmed by the situation that they storm out of the pub. Ian’s return to Albert Square is not QUITE as explosive as the ‘late’ Cindy Beale’s reappearance, but it’s still set to stir the pot! The Walford hardman is NOT happy about Ian’s return and Phil makes it perfectly clear that he wants Ian out of the Square - sooner rather than later! George is struggling to take in the news that his whole relationship with his wife was a lie, and the girls are half-sisters to Peter Beale! Unable to deal with it any longer, George demands that Cindy get out of the pub, along with the rest of the Beale family! Left alone, George breaks down, overwhelmed by emotion.

UNLUCKy bLAdES TAKE mANChESTER CIT y dOwN TO wIRE

United pushed the Premier League champions all the way at Bramall Lane on Sunday afternoon.

Substitute Jayden Bogle, on his first appearance this term, cancelled out Erling Haaland’s opener, only for Rodri to win it for the visitors late in the day.

Boss Heckingbottom made one change for the hosting of the treble winners, with Baldock returning at the expense of the injured Lowe. Hamer and Souza made their home debuts, whilst Norwood broke Carl Bradshaw’s 29-year

record for the most Blades Premier League appearances. City dominated the opening exchanges but did trouble Foderingham until the 12th minute and Haaland’s header was comfortably gathered from Silva’s cross. Moments later, there was injury concern for Osborn as he went to the ground and required treatment, subsequently he was replaced by Larouci. The visitors had the ball in the net on 20 minutes, but Rodri who won the initial header from a free-kick was offside, making

Ake’s finish irrelevant following a brief VAR check. Foderingham’s next contribution was far more significant though, saving well to deny Alvarez, after Haaland had used his strength to get the better of Egan with the aid of a deflection off Ahmedhodžić. On 36 minutes, referee Gillett pointed to the spot for a penalty after an Egan handball from Alvarez’s pull back, but from 12 yards in front of the Kop, Haaland hit the post, to the delight of the majority inside the Lane. The first period ended with Rodri having a shot

saved, before Baldock was cautioned for a lunge on Grealish. The start of the second half was similar to the first, with Haaland firing wide from Walker’s low cross, before Grealish teed up Rodri who dragged an effort wide of the far post. S2 was then incensed as Osula was booked despite being fouled by Gvardiol. On the hour, Foderingham was out quickly to deny Haaland again, before getting down smartly at his near post to save from Alvarez.

On 63 minutes though, United’s resistance was

LAST-GASP OwLS LOSE TO LATE CIT y GOAL

Owls manager Xisco was left frustrated for his players at Cardiff as Wednesday suffered a fourth consecutive defeat in the Championship.

With a first point of the campaign in sight after Barry Bannan had cancelled out Ike Ugbo’s early second half goal, the Owls conceded a penalty in the 97th minute. Ryan Wintle converted from the spot to leave Wednesday

empty-handed in the Welsh capital. It was harsh on Xisco’s side, who deserved something from the game and on another day, could have taken all three points. “But this is the Championship,” the manager said. “You must be ready in all the minutes, the very first to the last. If you make mistakes in this league you will get punished and I have spoken about this. We are frustrated about the result, I think the

performance was good away from home. We had control in the second half, we had power and showed important signs. We were unlucky to concede and again had bad luck in 97 minutes to receive a penalty against us and I don’t know for 100% if it was a penalty or not but after that, so late, there was nothing we could change.” Xisco continued: “I think every day we are getting better and better, our high press today was very good and there was a good level in the performance. I am sad for the players because I know how hard they are working every day. They are working hard to improve the situations. We always try to put the positive things

on our list and every day they are getting closer to what we want. We will see for the next one. We know the level in the Championship, our second half was better and we had a control and this is why I am sad for the players because this point for us was very important. The team were more solid today, with a better balance in defence and attack. We had good chances to score and if you don’t, then after you can have problems and in the Championship, every minute and action is important from the very first to very last.”

finally broken, Grealish got the the byline and stood up a ball to the back post where HAALAND headed home. The Norwegian striker thought he had a second eight minutes later, but it was ruled out for offside. United reacted by making a double change, as McBurnie and Bogle were introduced. On 74 minutes, Robinson’s long throw was only partially punched clear by Ederson, but Hamer’s shot on target was blocked by Dias, before Ahmedhodžić tried his luck from distance after a poor clearance

by the City stopper in the next phase of play, unfortunately it went wide. Souza was the third Blade to be booked for halting the marauding Silva, from the resulting free-kick Foderingham tipped behind a curling effort from Alvarez. Walker took a big risk as Traoré advanced into the area, but referee Gillett wasn’t impressed, but on 85 minutes, the roof came off the Lane as substitute BOGLE scored with the aid of a deflection at the Kop end, after Souza had kept the attack alive with a big tackle on

Kovacic. Unfortunately, though, parity was only restored briefly, as City quickly regained the lead. Walker capitilised on a slip by Larouci, he fired a low ball to Foden whose poor touch fell perfectly into the path of the advancing RODRI who fired who into the top corner. United

had chances to level again though, as seven minutes of added time were singled, firstly through Ahmedhodžić at the back post from McBurnie’s cross, before Larouci blazed over having won the ball back, but it just wasn’t to be.

TAyLOR PRAISES mILLERS TENACIT y

Rotherham United boss

Matt Taylor praised his side for a number of ‘moments of quality’ in their narrow 2-1 loss to Leicester City on Saturday, as the Millers were narrowly edged out by a side looking for an immediate return to the Premier League. The hosts were anything but outclassed in the

contest with the Foxes, playing some excellent football which they thought had them in front from Jordan Hugill, whose goal would eventually be chalked off by the officials. Speaking following the match, Taylor said: “It was a hell of a performance but we ran out of legs and steam in

the last 15/20 minutes of the game. We worked so hard to get back into the game and we felt we were unlucky to be behind and we showed moments of quality throughout against a top, top team. We got a little bit weaker towards the end which has been a pattern so far this season - they probably

mCCANN RUES COSTLy mISTAKES

Grant McCann has called for more concentration and focus from his players in a bid to avoid the sort of errors that have cost Rovers so far this season. An excellent performance at MK Dons was undone by two mistakes which saw the hosts run out 2-1 victors and leave Rovers still hunting for the first league win of

the campaign. “We gave ourselves an absolute mountain to climb again, conceding two goals in the manner we did,” McCann said. “One we didn’t track a man and the other came from not competing in the box from a set play. We conceded something similar last week against Notts County. We have

to eradicate these errors because unfortunately it’s costing us as a team at the minute. I know the lads don’t mean to make those mistakes but we need more concentration and focus in certain moments in games because when you put a performance in like that you expect to come away with the three points. We

got a little bit stronger. We didn’t have enough in our legs or bodies to get back in the game. From a manager’s point of view we defended the first breakaway and we got chance to regroup and we thought we should have defended it better than we did. “

could have been 2-0 up with some really good chances. On another day those go in. I’m obviously really gutted about the result because we’re here to win games but that performance definitely gives us something to go on. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not standing here happy at all but that performance shows us that we’re moving in the right direction.”
