With a wonderful programme of music, dance, food, and activities this year’s event has something for everyone. It’s a real chance for people to soak up the atmosphere, get together with their communities and celebrate what Rotherham has to offer. We’re expecting thousands of people to come along and best of all, entry is free, which is a real bonus. Every year the Rotherham Show feels like

the beating heart of the town, a coming together and a chance to make memories, so be sure to put the dates in your diary!”

People will be able to browse the Produce & Makers Market with its handmade, unique goodies; soak up the colour and flavours of the Asian Bazaar; or enjoy offerings at the Food Court.

Music is an integral part of the show with some amazing performances over

the years, and this year promises to be no different!

From brass bands and Hip Hop to rock and Reggae you can listen to fantastic free performances throughout the show weekend across two stages and the bandstand plus, a few popup performances to look out for too! Throughout the weekend the show will celebrate the spirit of the borough and give people the chance to enjoy an amazing free festival of culture, entertainment, and family fun. But most of all, it will offer the chance for people to be together. Parking will be available at Herringthorpe Playing Fields for £3.50 per day, card payment only. The playing fields are a 5-minute walk from the showground.

ShEFFIElD ROCkS AS SkYlINE FESTIvAl IS bACk FOR 2023

After seven consecutive sold-out events since their launch in April 2022, Skyline Festival returns on August 27th across four stages at FØRGE and Southbank!

Skyline will showcase a wide-range of musical genres across its four stages, from Tech-House & Disco to RnB & Garage. The vast majority of the lineup is composed of local DJs and artists, with the goal of promoting the best up-and-coming talent the Steel City has to offer.

The lineup includes Brad Wood, Finn Eden & Gruvee, who have been drawing serious attention in the electronic scene with their recent tracks. After a surprise

appearance at the last event though from TikTok sensation TeeDee, Skyline customers have been accustomed to late headliner announcements!

They’re bringing in ex-Gatecrasher lighting techs to take the production to a whole new level, including stunning laser shows, pyrotechnics and confetti airbursts! Working alongside Sheffield based audio team Raze Sound System, they’ll also be upgrading the sound with the cutting edge Danley system which has appeared at countless major UK festivals already this year.

Organisers Phil McCue and Simon Tomlinson

have been working alongside women in the night-time economy to devise customer experience and welfare policies to ensure everybody feels welcome at the event. After a successful trial of a fast-response mobile number where customers can report incidences of harassment or safety concerns, they’re pleased to now be rolling the policy out at all events. In partnership with the Sheffield City Centre License Watch committee, this will now be trialled across numerous venues in the city centre.

bHF HElplINE Calls aRE NOw FREE

Calls to the British Heart Foundation’s (BHF) Heart Helpline have seen a 10 percent increase from last year, with nurses now taking up to 400 calls a week. The figures have been released as the charity announces that thanks to fundraising through their partnership with Royal Mail, its vital helpline is now free to call for the first time since the service was first made available over 20 years ago. The Heart Helpline is a service where heart patients can call and speak to experienced cardiac nurses about their condition and concerns.

The Heart Helpline, which is open five days a week, offers expert information and support about heart and circulatory diseases and their risk factors to approximately 80 callers a day. Switching to a freephone number means the public won’t be charged for seeking support from an experienced cardiac nurse, making heart health information and guidance more accessible than ever. Maureen Talbot, Senior Cardiac Nurse at the BHF said: “Making our Heart Helpline free to call is a milestone celebration for the BHF. It’s now easier than ever for someone to ring us for information and support, and they can speak to one of our dedicated and experienced cardiac nurses. This has never been more needed as hundreds of thousands of people face record long waits for vital heart care. For over 20 years, we have been helping hundreds of thousands of people process a new diagnosis, understand clinical jargon or been a shoulder to cry on. We’re so grateful to Royal Mail for helping us make our brilliant service even more accessible

COUld YOU FOsTER a dOG?

to support countless more patients and their families.”

Greg Sage, Deputy Director Corporate Affairs & ESG, Royal Mail said: “It’s fantastic that we’ve been able to make the Heart Helpline freely accessible for the British public, and brilliant to hear how it’s going to benefit individuals and families across the country. It’s only been made possible through the hard fundraising efforts of our colleagues here at Royal Mail. Royal Mail staff have pushed themselves through physical challenges such as the London Marathon, BHF’s London to Brighton Bike Ride and generously donated through Payroll Giving and worked hard on initiatives to raise money for BHF. It’s a proud achievement for us to have enabled the Heart Helpline to be moved to a freephone number and we’re looking forward to seeing what other impact our partnership with BHF can have.”

There are currently around 7.6 million people in the UK living with heart or circulatory diseases, with these conditions being the biggest killer globally. The Waters family from Tunbridge Wells in Kent, used the BHF’s Heart Helpline on multiple occasions to support father and husband Stuart Waters.

Stuart, 48 at the time, suffered a cardiac arrest whilst in the car with his two young children. Stuart was considered clinically dead for 18 minutes and needed several follow-up operations. Stuart’s wife, Leanne Waters, 37, said:

“The BHF’s Heart Helpline was hugely important for us a family whilst Stuart was undergoing help and treatment after his cardiac arrest. I felt I needed the support from experts so that I could help him and our family as best I could.

It was such a tough time for us and I felt I couldn’t let out my emotions to other members of the family. I remember speaking to a specialist nurse and just breaking down – she allowed me that space that I couldn’t find elsewhere.

The nurses have always been so kind and gave us the knowledge and reassurance we needed. Knowing it was there as a crutch for us was invaluable. It’s fantastic to hear that the Heart Helpline is now totally free and will continue to support and help families the way it did for us.”

The BHF and Royal Mail partnership will last until 2026 with the goal of protecting heart health and saving lives across communities. This first fundraising milestone will be hugely significant for the 1,600 callers that come through the Heart Helpline each month looking for expert guidance. You can contact the Heart Helpline for free on: 0808 802 1234 or visit www.bhf.org.uk/ informationsupport/hearthelpline

The unique ‘Cobweb Bridge’ on Five Weirs Walk has been closed as a result of vandalism this weekend. Due to concerns for the safety of the bridge, it has been closed until further notice. Assessments are currently underway to understand the extent of the damage to the steelwork. Once this assessment is complete a plan will be drawn up to repair the damage and timescales for how long these repairs will take can be established. Further details will be shared as soon possible. In the meantime, bridge users are asked to take alternative routes. There are a number of alternatives routes which can be taken which are detailed below.

From Castlegate, head down Furnival Road and cross at Derek Dooley Way at the traffic lights. Proceed under the railway arch and pick up the Five Weirs Walk at Sussex Street.

From Castlegate, head along Blast Lane beside the canal, turn left on to Cadman Street and then immediate right onto Sussex Street. Turn left on to Effingham Road and rejoin the Five Weirs Walk at Sheffield Bailey Bridge. If accessing the bridge from the Wicker, all users will need to head back to Castlegate and follow the above routes or use Derek Dooley Way to get to Furnival Road.

Cllr Ben Miskell, Chair of the Transport, Regeneration and Climate Policy Committee, said:

“We are disappointed that the impressive Cobweb Bridge on the Five Weirs Walk was closed this weekend as a result of vandalism. Acts like this have an impact a lot of people and I know that it will be disappointing for many not to be able to use this crucial route. We’re working to establish the extent of the damage and how long it will take to repair and reopen the route. The pedestrian and cycle route provides a key link between the city centre and the east of Sheffield.

A specialist dog fostering scheme which supports people fleeing domestic abuse is issuing an urgent plea for more foster carers across Yorkshire after seeing a 23% increase in demand for its services over the last 12 months.

The Freedom Project, managed by Dogs Trust, the UK’s largest dog welfare charity, offers a lifeline for dog owners who are escaping from domestic abuse. It provides temporary foster homes for dogs, enabling survivors to access safe accommodation without the fear of what may happen to their dog if they cannot take them with them. Pets are often abused and, in some cases, killed by the perpetrator of domestic abuse in order to control and coerce. In addition to the physical abuse that pets may suffer, Dogs Trust found that 97%* of professionals working in the domestic abuse sector also said that animals are often used as a means of controlling someone experiencing domestic abuse. So far this year, Freedom Project volunteers have fostered 211 dogs, allowing 163 people to flee domestic abuse.

Due to the increase in demand on its services, Dogs Trust’s Freedom Project now urgently needs additional volunteer foster carers so that the scheme can support more people. All costs are covered by Dogs Trust, including vet bills, food, treats, grooming and bedding. Involvement in fostering through the project is always kept completely confidential to protect both the dogs

and the foster carers. Dogs are not fostered within the area that the owner is from and the foster carer will not know who the owner is or where they live.

James is currently fostering for the Freedom Project: “I really wanted to get a dog but I feel ready for the long-term commitment at the time. Fostering through the Freedom Project seemed like the perfect solution. It’s also meant I have got to meet different breeds of dogs and it has really opened my eyes to types of dogs that I didn’t think I’d like! At first, I didn’t realise the impact of fostering fleeing abuse would have on the family, being separated. I was just focused on me and the dog. But after my first foster, I received a card from the owner thanking me for looking after their dog. This made me feel a connection to them and made me realise what I was doing. And I embraced fostering in a much different perspective after that. Fostering became much more rewarding for me then. I feel proud of my efforts and happy for the families I have helped because I know the impact it’s had on them being able to change their lives. I also feel very proud of the dogs because they’ve been through a lot too.”

Laura Saunders, Freedom Project Manager at Dogs Trust said: “We’ve seen first-hand the ways that perpetrators use dogs to coerce, control, physically harm and threaten within abusive relationships. This is incredibly frightening for survivors and is often aimed to leave people

isolated. By providing temporary foster homes for dogs, we support survivors to access safe accommodation with the reassurance that their dog will be taken care of until they can be reunited. Whilst we are pleased to have been able to help so many people, there is still very much a need for our service, and we urgently need more foster carers across the UK so that we can continue this life-saving work.”

The Dogs Trust Freedom

Project is looking for volunteers who are at home during the day, potentially people who are retired or work from home. They must have some experience of caring for dogs and be able to commit to fostering a dog for at least six months. If you think you can help or would like more information on the service, visit www. dogstrustfreedomproject. org.uk or call 0808 196 6240

LEADMILL URGE LOBBYING OF COUNCIL FOR CAMPAIGN

The new leader of Sheffield City Council, Tom Hunt, has a major headache less than three months into the job — and it’s not something a quick paracetamol can solve.

The Leadmill, who are currently running the ‘Battle for the Soul of Sheffield’ campaign, have launched a major lobbying effort demanding that Hunt backs their bid to save their iconic venue — and more than 5,000 people have already committed to the push.

Supporters of the campaign are being asked to ‘#TellTom’ to back

The Leadmill’s campaign to keep their doors open on Twitter/X, by email or postcard.

Tom Hunt is the Leader of

Sheffield Council and so far hasn’t taken a position on the hostile takeover of The Leadmill, which puts decades of cultural heritage and history at risk

“This isn’t just about The Leadmill,” a spokesperson from The Leadmill said. “Everything that’s made our city what it is today is at stake. It may start with us, but it goes much further than that. If we don’t stop this hostile takeover, the very soul and character of our great city is at risk. Tom needs to pick a side.”

Supporters can either tweet @ tomhunt100 using #TellTom, email him at tom.hunt@ councillor.sheffield.gov.uk, or they can write letters to him. A campaign hub with posters and

leaflets has also been launched so residents can show their support.

All the details to do so and guidance to do so can be found here: www.savetheleadmill.com/

TellTom

A Spokesperson for The Leadmill said:

“This isn’t just about The Leadmill. Everything that’s made our city what it is today is now at stake, but here’s the truth: The leader of our council is ignoring us. We’ve reached out to Tom by text, phone call, email and letter — and we’ve heard nothing.

“Tom, of all people, should know that this hostile takeover risks fundamentally and forever changing the course of our city,

heritage, and culture. It may start with us at The Leadmill, but it goes much further than that. If we don’t stop this hostile takeover, the very soul and character of our great city is at risk. Tom needs to pick a side. “There are 80 members of staff who are incredibly passionate about ensuring that The Leadmill is a top quality venue that provides a huge variety of entertainment to visitors from across the globe, but we are all so tired of the ongoing situation — time and energy is being spent on trying to retain our jobs and The Leadmill. Its history and its legacy is so important to Sheffield and to all of us working here.

“That’s why we’re asking you –the great people of Sheffield (and further afield!) to help us win this battle. It’s simple, easy and quick:

we need you to #TellTom to back our campaign. Tom Hunt is the leader of Sheffield City Council and is accountable to you. He is elected by you, works for you, and represents you. He should have your best interests at heart.

“We need you to #TellTom how you feel about this hostile takeover and #TellTom to join us in this Battle for the Soul of Sheffield. You can #TellTom by email, letter or tweet him.

“All the details to do so and guidance to do so can be found here: www.savetheleadmill.com/ TellTom

“We have been overwhelmed by your support so far, but we can only win this Battle for the Soul of Sheffield with your help, so let’s get out there and #TellTom how we feel. And don’t forget to tell your friends and family to join too! Thank you.”

Sullivan’s sparkling music and Gilbert’s humorous plot twists and topsy turvy wit, combined with colourful costumes, lively dances and beautiful melodies, and accompanied by a professional orchestra, are guaranteed to make you leave the theatre with a smile on your face. It’s pure joy from start to finish. The ‘Savs’, a Gilbert and Sullivan touring company made up of hand-picked singers and musicians from across the north of England, have been delighting audiences and building up a following throughout Yorkshire and abroad for many years. Coronation Street: Paul is overcome with emotion when Billy presents him with an engagement ring for his birthday, but he’s dismayed when his occupational therapist agrees with Billy that it is probably time for a wheelchair. Frustrated that he can’t pay his way, Ryan tells Sean and Daisy he is hoping to start making money from his socials. George makes it clear to Todd that their working relationship is over. Eileen urges him to bury the hatchet with Todd and pay him a decent salary. At No.8, Lily opens her birthday presents whilst David and Shona congratulate Max on passing his GCSEs. A stressed Carla tells Sarah that they need to find another European distributor.

Emmerdale:

Mackenzie falls back into bed with his ex. Charity, who is starting to hope this could be the start of the road back to togetherness. As Mack’s mistake weighs heavily on his mind he’s aware that he needs to make a decision about his love life, once and for all. So, who’s it to be, Chloe, the mother of his child, or his soul mate Charity? Samson’s stunned when he finds out Lydia’s childhood friend Craig owns the company which created one of his favourite mobile phone games. Can Lydia swing the keen teen some work experience with Craig? Charles seethes as his mum rallies round Victor, who relishes in winding up their son. Rhona’s patience snaps and she tells her loved ones they’re all going to have to face their fears together. At the B&B, Wendy and Bob continue to try to get their relationship back on track.

Eastenders: Peter investigates Cindy’s ‘other’ family and is shocked to find Bobby & Anna are keen on each other. He’s taken by surprise when his mum calls him to see where he is. Peter tries to cover but Cindy knows there’s something up. Stacey is rattled when she gets back home to find her bedroom has been trashed and she’s at a loss over what has happened. Yolande is faced with an ultimatum when her ex pleads with her to return to Birmingham with him.

bATTLING bLAdES GO dOwN TO LAST mINUTE FOREST wINNER

United battled gamely in Nottingham on Friday night, only to be denied a deserved point by a late goal.

Gustavo Hamer, on his debut, cancelled out Taiwo Awoniyi’s early opener and for long periods, the Blades more than matched the hosts, but substitute Chris Wood snatched the points at the death which was harsh on the visitors. Boss Heckingbottom handed Hamer his debut against Steve Cooper’s Reds, one of two changes, with Souza making his full bow in place of the injured Baldock.

Norwood equalled Carl Bradshaw’s Premier League appearance record, whilst the newest recruit Tom Davies made the bench. In front of an expectant home crowd, United got off to the worst possible start. In the third minute, a miskick by Lowe was seized upon by Johnson and from a Aurier cross, AWONIYI rose highest to head past Foderingham. United looked for an instant response from a Robinson long throw, but Osula couldn’t get any contact on the ball after Ahmedhodžić had flicked towards.

Former Blades loanee Gibbs-White was denied routinely by Foderingham, before a corner was kept alive by Aurier and ended with McKenna heading over. Forest had appeals for a penalty waved away by referee Bankes after Ahmedhodžić and Awoniyi tangled, before the Bosnian timed his challenge perfectly to deflect the ball away from Williams. United’s best chance came on 34 minutes, Osborn’s low cross was only partially cleared by Danilo, but despite fully stretching Turner, Souza’s curling effort was claimed by

the American stopper. Osborn then freed Hamer following a mistake by Hamer, but with Osula lurking, Worrall headed clear, before Boly was booked for a blatant tug on Traoré. The Blades were really starting to come into the game, with both Lowe and the Osborn winning corners after being found in the area by Traoré and Hamer respectively. Before the break, Aurier was cautioned following a disagreement with the match official, as GibbsWhite fired over from a promising position. There was still time left

xISCO PLEASEd wITh PROGRESS dESPITE RESULT

After a whirlwind six weeks at the helm, 10 new additions to the squad and now into the cut and thrust of the Championship campaign, to say it’s been a hectic start for Xisco would be an understatement.

As the manager continues to mould the team in his image, impart new ideas and put his stamp on the squad, Xisco has called

for calm heads, a little time and patience during this transitional period. The hard work has continued on the training ground this week and with more new faces through the door, the squad is taking shape. The Owls slipped to defeat against Preston as the visitors profited from a set piece goal that decided the game. Wednesday turned in a much-

improved performance following two previous losses and Xisco says the signs were there for better things ahead. But the manager also emphasised the need for increased energies moving forward as the team combats the demands of the Championship. He said: “We are improving, it was a better performance and we must go step by step. Of course I am disappointed with the result because we deserved something from the game. There is a big difference between the divisions and we must have more energy, more velocity,

more power. “We are getting there and we lost today on a set play.

I am working with the players every day, I can see the improvements. We will continue to get better and we must be patient.”

Xisco says new recruit Momo Diaby will be assessed after the midfielder hobbled off in the second half. Diaby impressed in the engine room and Xisco said: “He played a good game, it was a good performance and I was sad to see him come off. It is too early right now, we will assess the situation and get the full report from the medical department.”

for United to have their own penalty appeals waved away as Mangala and Osula challenged in the area, as Norwood was the latest to be booked for seemingly speaking out of turn. United mad a change at the interval with Larouci replacing Lowe and the visitors were soon on the front foot, Traoré crossed, Osula competed with Worrall, before Ahmedhodžić fired an effort, which deflected of Williams, wide. Aurier headed the corner over his own bar and from the second corner, the Blades levelled on 48

minutes. McKenna could only clear to HAMER who curled a delicious effort into the top corner to send the away end into delirium. Having finished the first half strongly, United were the ones forcing the issue having restored parity and Souza came within inches of replicating the effort from Hamer after excellent work by Osula. On 56 minutes, Awoniyi had the ball in the net from Johnson’s pass, but the assistant referee flagged and Souza was withdrawn as Basham entered the fray. The game

remained on a knifeedge entering the last 20 minutes, as Hamer was cautioned for a foul on the ever-lively Gibbs-White. United made a third change, with Brooks introduced at the expense of Osula. A mix-up between Worrall and McKenna presented Traoré with

an opportunity, but in fairness to Turner he did well to deny him. Hackford was United’s final change, and on 89 minutes, Forest delivered the cruellest of blows as WOOD headed home Aurier’s cross to snatch the spoils.

TAYLOR bEmOANS dEFENSIVE SLIP-UPS

Millers boss Matt Taylor bemoaned his side’s inability to capitalise on their early advantage as a Jobe Bellingham-inspired Sunderland ran out narrow victors at the Stadium of Light. Hakeem Odoffin put the Millers ahead with a well-taken effort but it proved a false dawn

dONNY STILL SEARChING FOR wIN

Owen Bailey believes Rovers set the standard for themselves in the Carabao Cup but must find a way to deliver on a consistent basis. The victory at Hull City in the competition has been the high

as Bellingham turned the game on its head with a brace either side of the interval – with his first goal coming just two minutes after Rotherham’s opener. “Immediately after the game, I’m frustrated. Especially their first goal on the back of just going ahead. We knew what this atmosphere would

point of the campaign so far, as the hunt for a first league win continues. Midfielder Bailey says aspects of the performance at the MKM Stadium must be carried into all fixtures as Rovers look to get on track in Sky Bet League Two. “We have conceded quite a few goals so far and haven’t scored many

be like if we stayed ahead just that little bit longer. The pressure would have built on the home team and that was a moment we needed to see out better than we did. The second goal is an example of where we are at the moment. We defend their counter attack and win the ball back and then give it

so naturally that’s not going to end up well,” he said. “The Hull game was a massive high for everybody. That shows how good we can be and everyone knows it. It was the perfect performance from this group. Sprinting everywhere, pressing, high energy, clinical on the counterattack and being calm, composed

away. I felt that just happened all over the pitch. It happened too often today and meant it was a difficult encounter trying to stop them. I thought defensively we did enough to get something out of the game. Our use of the ball let us down too often, today.

and keeping it when we’ve got the ball. Mansfield was kind of a step back in the right direction but it’s low after Saturday. We need to get back to the drawing board and find a level of consistency when we have two games in a week and try to really push on and get the points.”
