It’s been an incredible summer of sport with the Women’s World Cup, the Ashes, Wimbledon and the Netball World Cup just a few of the tournaments that have been keeping us all entertained over the last few months.

Hoping to inspire the next generation to sporting success Cash for Kids

Sports Challenge is back for 2023. This unique fundraising competition aims to improve access and provide opportunities for disadvantaged children and young people struggling to access sporting groups. Entries are open now until midnight on Monday 11th September and you

sports Cash for Kids Sports Challenge asks local grassroots sporting groups to fundraise as much as possible during a set time - this year it runs from 16th September to 16th October. Not only do the groups get access to the charity’s brilliant network of fundraisers for tips and help they all keep 100% of the cash they raised AND have the opportunity to win additional funding from Cash for Kids! The three top fundraising groups each receive an extra £5,000, £2,500 or £1,500 to add to their total. There are also two special awards – both worth £500 each – for the best use

of social media and the most creative fundraising idea. Funds raised will be used for a variety of reasons including subsidised membership fees for families who can’t afford to send their children to clubs or helping with clothing or kit for those struggling in the midst of the cost-of-living crisis. Money will also be used to improve facilities or make adaptations where necessary so that children and young people with additional needs can take part in their chosen sport.

Last year saw City of Sheffield Diving Club raise an incredible £31,909.61 that they used to extend their Community Try Diving Scheme. This helped to

provide weekly free try diving lessons across the city for 12 months, enabling more children to try our sport no matter what their personal circumstances are. They have created a hardship fund to support aspiring young athletes from struggling families to continue to train and compete, supporting young divers to achieve their potential. As the winners of the challenge, they were then awarded the first prize fund of £5,000 plus an additional £500 for winning the best use of social media award – granting them a total of £37,409.61. Encouraging other local sports groups to take part this year, Nikki

Smith from City of Sheffield Diving Club said ‘Winning the Sports Challenge has been significant in helping our club to not only survive but thrive. Funds raised have made diving more accessible to our local community through much needed facility improvements and providing sustained opportunities to participate. Taking part in the challenge engaged and united our members and we thoroughly recommend taking parting part in Sports Challenge to local clubs and teams’.

Weston Park Cancer Charity Golf Day raises more than

Despite the rain, Weston Park Cancer Charity's annual Golf Day was able to raise £31,490 thanks to the support and enthusiasm of everyone involved.

The money raised at this year's Weston Park Cancer Charity Golf Day, sponsored by Special Steel Group, will help us enhance cancer treatment, improve support and fund vital research – ensuring people across our region receive the very best cancer treatment and support.

The event, held at Hallamshire Golf Club in Sheffield, saw entries from 42 teams, including the main sponsors alongside major local firms in the construction, travel and entertainment industries.

Generous sponsorship and backing from organisations and individuals helped raise vital funds for Weston Park Cancer Charity, as did generous donations, competition entries,

auctions and raffle tickets purchased by players on the day.

Charity patron John Price set up the forerunner to the Weston Park Cancer Charity Golf Day, having defied a terminal cancer diagnosis to see his sons through their education, qualify in their respective professionals, get married and have children.

In response, John set up the golf day years ago to raise £100,000 for Weston Park – to pay back the cost of the clinical trial he took part in. John’s golf day eventually became the Weston Park Cancer Charity Golf Day, continuing a legacy which has seen him raise more than £350,000 for Weston Park Cancer Charity to date.

Weston Park Cancer Charity events manager Rachael Thomas said: "I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone for their support for the Weston Park Cancer Charity Golf Day.

"The total raised on the day shows everyone's absolute

commitment to supporting the one in two facing cancer in our region.

"As well as the 42 teams who took part, we are grateful to our main sponsor Special Steel Group, all our hole sponsors, Maggie May's Sheffield, Molson Coors, Pricecheck, alongside Pago Premium Fruit Juice for providing refreshments and Bradwell Skips for all our waste management needs.

"Our thanks not only go to our colleagues and volunteers who worked in the rain all day and still kept a smile on their faces, but also those who covered our Charity Hub, and who supported in any way in the lead-up to the event.

"It did in fact rain all day –however, that didn’t stop the golfers. Some teams could only play half the course due to the rain, but no one's spirits were dampened."

News, Information and Advice

musician is back playinG Guitar for first time in years after brain implant eases parkinson’s symptoms

A singer songwriter who has lived with Parkinson’s for more than 19 years says he has been given his quality of his life back after neurosurgeons at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust implanted a brain stimulator attached to a small pacemaker-like device under his skin which also automatically records his brain activity.

Phil Webster, 62, who underwent deep brain stimulation surgery at the Hallamshire Hospital has described the improvements he has seen since his surgery in his body movements as a “miracle”.

In the 1990s, Phil was a regular fixture on the local music scene in West Yorkshire but his Parkinson’s disease diagnosis in 2004 made it impossible for him to play to live audiences or play his guitar due to the involuntary movements and tremors he was suffering.

As the years went on, Phil’s symptoms worsened: “Before I underwent deep brain stimulation surgery I was falling daily, sometimes hourly. I smashed both my shoulders and had to have them replaced, I broke my neck, and in the last 16 months alone I broke my nose three times. Parkinson’s has been a burden.”

After hearing about a procedure called deep brain stimulation, he was referred to the Royal Hallamshire Hospital by his GP where an expert team of neurosurgeons, neurologists,

neuroradiologists and specialist nurses first implanted very thin wires with electrodes at their tips deep inside his brain. These were then connected by wires that travel under the skin and down the neck to a tiny pulse stimulator device under the skin of the chest, which sends electrical signals to damaged areas of the brain.

A new, novel feature –which has previously not been available – was also added to the pulse stimulator device to capture signal data direct from Phil’s implanted leads.

This data, which is stored and can be played back on the physician’s tablet programmer, shows the continuous patterns of Phil’s brain activity, allowing clinicians to see at-a-glance how medications and therapy can be optimised. This allows patients who have had deep brain stimulation to have greater control of their symptoms as clinicians can see ways where supportive treatments, such as medications, can be reduced.

“The impact of the deep brain stimulation surgery has been incredible,” said Phil. “I can walk straight, regained my ability to play my guitar and write music, and my bodily movements are so much better. It’s been so rewarding to be able to keep up with my wife’s walking pace and to simply hold her hand while walking with the dogs. It’s been phenomenal. I am eternally grateful to all

the nurses at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, the medical team and surgeon Mr Yianni for all they have done.”

Sheffield Teaching Hospitals is one of a handful of leading neurosurgical centres in the country to provide deep brain stimulation for patients with certain neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s, dystonia and essential tremor.

Mr John Yianni, Consultant Neurosurgeon and Stereotactic Radiosurgeon at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust said:

“There is currently no cure for Parkinson’s disease, so we are delighted to hear that this specialist treatment has helped reduce some of the terrible effects of Phil’s condition. Deep brain stimulation is not new and not suitable for all patients and we have been providing the surgery here in Sheffield for over two decades.

“Advances in device technology now mean we are able to offer more personalised therapies which give us vital diagnostic information whereas previously we were only able to stimulate the brain without this to guide us.

“In Phil’s case this has made an immeasurable difference to the quality of his life and, together with the information accrued by the new novel technology captured from his device away from the hospital, we have been able to make adjustments to his therapy over a much shorter period of time than was previously possible.”

Patients undergoing deep brain stimulation at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals can find out more about the different types of battery-powered stimulators available to them by speaking with their clinician.

raise a Glass to tHe cotleiGH cocktail bar

Raise a glass to Hackenthorpe’s Cotleigh Residential Care Home… and its new cocktail bar! The home, part of the chain operated by city charity Sheffcare, raised more than £1,000 for the Cotleigh residents’ comfort fund when the launch of the cocktail bar was celebrated with a special summer party.

“Everyone had so much fun and the atmosphere was absolutely electric,” said Cotleigh manager Nick Iwanejko.

“It was great to see our residents have so much fun with their family and friends and the money raised will go towards providing more activities, trips and equipment for the home that will help bring joy to our residents.

“The party was also a great demonstration of the power of the community and how we can all work together to make a difference.

“We are so grateful to everyone who contributed and participated and a special thank you to the Cotleigh team for their hard work in designing our bespoke bar.”

family business offers complete funeral service

Eric Eyre Funeral Service understands how difficult the process of planning a funeral for a loved one can be and offer a bespoke funeral service, whilst continuing to uphold traditional values.

Established since 1864, Eric took over the business in 1955 and has been looking after families in the local community and surrounding areas of Sheffield, Barnsley and Rotherham ever since, with branches at High Green and Sheffield Lane Top.

Available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and with decades of experience in guiding bereaved clients through this difficult time, Eric Eyre provide a professional yet personal service, caring for you and your loved ones while facilitating the necessary funeral arrangements and ensuring your wishes are carried out with care and compassion. Eric Eyre go the extra mile to provide an exceptional service and will take responsibility for ensuring everything is perfectly organised to deliver a fitting tribute to your loved one’s life story. “Just as other aspects of life have evolved, so has society’s approach to funerals, with modern funerals a very different affair to the traditional, formal black-tie events of years gone by,” says Wayne Pickering, manager at Eric Eyre Funeral Service. “For many, a funeral has moved from being a sombre affair to a celebration of life – complete with all that you’d expect from any other celebration, including music, entertainment and laughter. That is why we are always on hand to offer guidance on the many ways we can add a personal touch, just let us know what you would like and we will do our utmost to meet your requirements.” “

With over 20 years’ experience of the industry, and many years’ previous experience with John Fairest, Wayne was offered the opportunity to join Eric as

manager in 2017, “I joined John Fairest as a hearse driver in 1997 and was later promoted to funeral director. It was there that I learnt how to arrange and conduct funerals, as well as the correct way to handle and line coffins and how to prepare the deceased for the family to pay their respects. This gave me a full scope of all aspects of the job and after ten years of service I was offered the position of manager at a new branch on Abbey Lane, which I accepted.

In September 2017 I was offered the opportunity to join the team at Eric Eyre’s and to ‘move back home’, as I say, as I live local to both branches. It was, and still is, a fantastic opportunity for me to grow and develop an already friendly family run business and provide our local community with a warm and compassionate service.”

Completing the team at High Green is Sharon Clayton and Kay Cooper, while Beverley Travis and Ruth Fenlon look after the branch at Sheffield Lane Top, which opened four years ago.

“Our aim is to be there for our clients in every way that we can and make sure that their loved one is sent on their final journey exactly as they would have wanted. Your first point of contact will be the person you deal with throughout the process and whether the death has occurred at home, in a hospital or elsewhere, we will guide from the initial arrangement all the way through to directing the funeral. We even provide help following the service, should you need any further support or guidance.”

If you need help arranging a funeral for your loved one, contact Eric Eyre Funeral Service.

First established in 1865, Eric Eyre has personally looked after families in the local communities of Sheffield, Barnsley and Rotherham since 1955.

Operating from branches in High Green and Sheffield Lane Top we offer a bespoke funeral service upholding traditional values whilst progressing to cater for modern, personalised customer requirements.

LEGENDARY SINGER ALEXANDER O’NEAL VISITS SHEFFIELD ONE LAST TIME

After nearly five decades in the business, it is with great excitement that legendary singer Alexander O’Neal heads out on his Time to Say Goodbye: Farewell World Tour, calling in at Sheffield City Hall on Friday 8th September.

The beloved soul star is hitting the road one final time, with farewell dates to extend until mid-2024.

Time to Say Goodbye takes the audience on a wonderful journey through his incredible career with never-before-seen-photos, testimonies and tributes, all set to the tune of some of Alex’s most beloved songs from his legendary catalogue including “Criticize,” “Fake” and “If You Were Here Tonight.”

Accompanied by his exemplary 9-piece live band, there won’t be a dry eye in the house as audiences come together to celebrate the legacy of Alexander O’Neal. Boasting a soulful yet tough voice noted to have the same grain and

Sheffield to celebrate John Burkhill’s £1million fundraising

range as that of Otis Redding, Alexander O’Neal is comfortable with pumping dancefloor burners and slinky couch-cuddlers.

The strength of his material and his robust vocals can be heard on his many chart-topping releases including 1985’s eponymous debut Alexander O’Neal, 1987’s smash hit album Hearsay, 1991’s All True Man, and 1998’s Lovers Again.

The Farewell Tour Sheffield City Hall Friday 8th September Tickets available from www. sheffieldcityhall.co.uk or from the Box Office.

On Thursday 17 August, a celebration event for John “The man with the pram” Burkhill will take place at Sheffield Winter Garden, hosted by Lord Mayor Cllr Colin Ross. The event will be open to anyone who wants to join us in celebrating John’s enormous fundraising achievement for Macmillan Cancer Support, which has and continues to change the lives of many. There will also be the opportunity to write a post card of thanks to

John, which will be available on entry.

Lord Mayor, Cllr Colin Ross, said: “I’m very proud to be hosting a civic event for John Burkhill, whose achievements have been nothing short of astounding. To raise over £1million for charity is no mean feat and it’s only right that we honour John’s achievements in a public setting for people to enjoy.

“I’d love to see people there, dressed in Macmillan green, celebrating John together. The public can leave messages of thanks for John to read, alongside hearing from a number of people who want to publicly thank John for raising so much money for Macmillan Cancer Support. This will be a special celebration for John, for Macmillan and the city.”

We ask that those who wish to attend arrive by 11am.

bLADES SUFFER NARROw DEFEAT IN PREMIER LEAGUE RETURN

United battled gamely in defeat on their return to the Premier League last Saturday afternoon.

Odsonne Edouard netted the decisive goal of the game early in the second half, with Will Osula having the Blades best chance, one in each half.

Boss Heckingbottom handed a full debut to new signing Traoré for United’s Premier League return against the Eagles, he was partnered in attack alongside Osula, who made his full league debut. Four other summer arrivals were

named on the bench with a number of academy players.

United started positively and having won an early corner, Osula curled a left-footed effort towards goal, only for a deflection to take it wide of the far post.

The Danish forward was then booked by referee Brooks, as Palace tried to assert themselves on the contest, although a shot from Edouard was comfortably gathered by Foderingham.

On 22 minutes, the visitors thought they had taken the lead after Ayew headed home the rebound after

Foderingham failed to gather a dipping effort from Andersen, but thankfully, despite an initial delay, the assistant referee flagged for offside.

The Blades were combative across the pitch and forced a couple more corners before the break, from the last Egan headed, prior to Norwood seeing an strike from distance saved by Johnstone as the first period drew to a close.

Palace took the lead inside five minutes of the restart as EDOUARD scored from closerange after Ayew had

fashioned room for a cross from the right. Ahmedhodžić was booked for halting a counter attack, before Foderingham had to make the first of a number of timely interventions from an Edouard header. At the other end, the lively Traore looked to have freed Osborn in the area, only for Andersen to make a crucial sliding block with Osula ready to pounce if not, before Edouard strayed offside prior to converting Mitchell’s low cross, as Foderingham was called into action to deny the advancing Schlupp.

MOMO DIAby jOINS OwLS ON LOAN

The Owls have made their ninth signing of the summer in the shape of Frenchman Momo Diaby.

The towering midfielder joins Wednesday on a season-long loan from Portuguese Primeira side Portimonense SC.

Diaby has spent his professional career to date in Portugal, including four seasons at Pacos Ferreira and more recently Portimonense

SC, whom he joined in the summer of 2022.

The 26-year-old links up with a familiar face at Hillsborough having played at Pacos Ferreira with fellow new Owls recruit Jaun Delgado.

Diaby told swfc.co.uk: “I know Juan, I have played with him before. Before I came I spoke with him and he told me great things about the club.

“I am very happy and I hope we have a good

season. I am here to help the team.

“As soon as I heard, it was clear I wanted to come to Sheffield Wednesday and I am very happy because I will finally play in England, it has always been a dream.

“I can’t wait, I have heard a lot of good things about the fans and I want to tell them that me and the rest of the team will do our best to make them happy.”

Diaby has been allocated shirt number 44 for the duration of his S6 stay.

The last 15 minutes saw United give it a real go and from Traore’s pull back, Osula fired a powerful effort into the side netting with half of S2 thinking the net had rippled, whilst the ever-dangerous Ayew saw a stinging strike beaten away by United’s number one. Chasing the game, United made changes, including debuts for Larocui and Souza, but despite several balls into the box during five minutes of stoppage time, Palace held on to claim the spoils.

TAyLOR CREDITS CHARACTER

Rotherham United boss Matt Taylor reiterated the need to praise his side for the character and effort that they displayed in their 2-2 draw with Blackburn Rovers on Saturday. The Millers had taken a two-goal lead courtesy

McCann pledges calm

Grant McCann insists that calm heads will prevail in the aftermath of Rovers’ heavy defeat at Newport County. The Rovers manager labelled the performance in the 4-0 loss

of strikes from Hakeem Odoffin and Fred Onyedinma before the latter received his marching orders for a second bookable offence and reduced the home side to 10 men.

Blackburn fought back to restore parity and ensure that the sides shared the spoils in the Millers' first home league game of the season at AESSEAL New York Stadium.

"We're disappointed and frustrated and that's to

‘unacceptable’ and said everything that could go wrong, went wrong for his side.

As he looks to address the circumstances of the defeat ahead of Tuesday’s visit of Mansfield Town to the Eco-Power Stadium, McCann said the group cannot afford to dwell on what happened at Rodney Parade for too long.

“There’s two ways that

sum it up lightly.

"We'd just gone 2-0 up at home to Blackburn Rovers and all of a suddenly then we're a yellow card down and two minutes later there is a sending off.

"Every single moment now is magnified in terms of the scrutiny and if that is going to be a yellow card then I understand that and have no problem with it whatsoever but there are so many decisions in the game

you can go about it - you can either throw your toys out of the pram or you can remain calm,” he said. “I know what I’ll do. I’ll remain calm and I’ll make sure I pick the players up and go again. “It’s a three game week and that’s all we can do. We can’t let it linger, we have to address it and move on. The players lacked serious energy and it’s something we

that have to be right before we start getting into these ones.

"Do I give a bit of sympathy for the referee - because they're just trying to implement the rules - yes. "We've got another suspension now.

"It's frustrating and I think we still have to talk about the character and effort shown by the players out there, who were out on their feet by the way because we couldn't rest them on Tuesday night."

have to look at. They are fit. It’s hard when you go 2-0 down, in the manner that we did as well by gifting two goals to them. It’s frustrating.”

On an afternoon of few positives, McCann praised the impact made off the bench by new signing Mo Faal, who joined the club on a season-long loan from West Bromwich Albion on Friday.
