repairs begin at hillsborough park ECO SOFAS

Following assessments by both Tramlines and Sheffield City Council groundwork teams, work has begun to restore Hillsborough Park back to its usual high quality.

Ground repair work began on Monday 31 July as planned and the festival’s perimeter fence is due to be removed by 4 August. Once the fence has come down, some areas of the park will remain fenced off to allow for restoration work to take place.

To give residents the latest updates on progress, Tramlines has set up this webpage which will be regularly updated as repairs progress. All repairs will be paid for by Tramlines. Repairs include removal of debris, removal of top layer

of soil, raking and levelling, new topsoil and sand; re-seeding and fertiliser; aeration; heavy rolling; protection while existing grass recovers or new growth is established.

Councillor Richard Williams, Chair of the Communities, Parks and Leisure Committee, said:

“We know how important Hillsborough Park is to residents which is why we are working with Tramlines to restore the park to its usual high quality and return it for community use.

“The council and Tramlines are committed to opening up damaged areas of the park for residents as soon as restorations are complete. The park will be reopened in sections as repairs are finished, which

means families will not have to wait until all the work is complete to access the park again. Whilst works are taking place residents can still use the pump track, playground and café. The multi-use games area will be in use from this weekend. Paths near the pond have also been cleared so residents can enjoy that area of the park.

“Repairs are weather dependent, which means we cannot say with certainty when the works will be fully complete.

Continued wet weather since the festival finished means some areas of the park will have to dry out further before groundwork begins. Tramlines is regularly updating its

residents webpage as repairs progress. The council will continue to monitor progress to ensure that high quality and sustainable repairs are made in reasonable timeframes for the weather conditions.

“We thank everyone for their patience as we complete this work and apologise for any inconvenience caused to the local community.”

Timms Cleasby, Tramlines

Operations Director said: “We understand the frustration of the Hillsborough community that sections of the park will remain fenced while repair work continues. We’ve worked really hard to open up areas as they’re ready and we’ve

kept everyone up to date via the residents Q&A on the Tramlines website. The plan is in place and contractors started work on Monday 31st as planned. The timetable is of course subject to the weather but we have promised that we’ll get it done, we’ll get it right, we’re paying for everything and we’ll keep residents informed. We’ll stick to those commitments throughout the process.”

Flying scotsman, the most famous steam locomotive in the world, will be returning to its birthplace of Doncaster, the city where it was built 100 years ago, for a weekend visit on 11 and 12 November.

This special event will be free for members of the public to attend who will get the opportunity to get close to the iconic locomotive and even step on to the footplate.

Mayor of Doncaster Ros Jones said: “I am delighted

that we can now announce this wonderful weekend event so more people in Doncaster can appreciate the magnificence and history of this worldfamous locomotive.

“Flying Scotsman was built here in Doncaster and

means a great deal to local people whose relatives helped to design and build it. It will be incredible to see it return home for an extended stay as part of its centenary year.

“I want to acknowledge and thank the organisations who have helped to make this event a reality – especially the National Railway Museum, Freightliner and locomotive engineers Riley & Son (E).”

Judith McNicol, Director of the National Railway Museum, said: “Flying Scotsman’s centenary is a fantastic opportunity for the public to see this world-famous locomotive in person and to share in the excitement of this

special occasion. A visit to Doncaster, Flying Scotsman’s birthplace, is sure to be a highlight of the centenary calendar.”

Flying Scotsman will be staying at Freightliner Railport, near the city centre. Full details about timings and how to order tickets will be made available in the next few weeks.

Freightliner Terminals MD, Nick Matthews said “We are delighted to be able to support this event, allowing the global railway icon Flying Scotsman to be on display to the local community”

Flying Scotsman went into service on 24 February 1923 and cost £7,944 to build. The locomotive

was the first in the UK to officially reach 100mph and the first to circumnavigate the globe. It was also the first ever non-stop London to Edinburgh service reducing the journey time to eight hours.

Events are taking place across Doncaster as part of Flying Scotsman’s centenary year to celebrate this significant milestone with schools, museums and libraries getting involved. The full programme is available to view at www. dglam.org.uk/whats-on/ flying-scotsman

Is CHEapEsT

New cost comparison research has found a trip to your local swimming pool to be one of the most affordable activities for families and children. With the cost-of-living rising and putting families at increasing risk of sacrificing valuable leisure time, new insight from Swim England shows that casual swimming is actually much more affordable than other family activities. In addition to the extensive health benefits of being

active in the water, it is also a great way to keep the family entertained throughout the summer holidays. The latest cost comparisons show that swimming as a family has been found to be on average 28 per cent cheaper than bowling, 35 per cent cheaper than cinema tickets and 35 per cent cheaper than crazy golf. These comparisons also do not include any of the additional costs of food or drink associated with many of the activities

that further inflate prices for families.

The swimming sector has launched the latest wave of its #LoveSwimming campaign to highlight the affordability of swimming as a family activity, and the importance of leisure centres as a vital community resource. Research also indicates swimming remains a fantastic bonding opportunity for families, with clear benefits to the happiness levels of both parents and children.

Oddfellows is inviting all retirees who want to explore their local surroundings, but might be stuck with who to go with, to join them. The local friendly society’s members often set out to explore Sheffield, Rotherham, Doncaster, Barnsley and Worksop’s attractions, dine out, or enjoy walks together. Branch Secretary of South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire Oddfellows, Lesley Walton, believes that trying new things is better in good company. She says her group is a ready-made set of friends to adventure with, and they are always looking for newcomers to join them. She added: “Most of our members are retired, so they find they have more free time to do things that they’ve not had time to do before. However, sometimes their friends are still working, or they don’t have that likeminded person to share the experience with. That’s where we come in. We always have space for new faces. In fact, the more the merrier!”

The group has recently visited Bury Market, Hollywood Bowl, Crazy Golf, York, Chester and coffee mornings and lunches galore. We also have monthly social afternoon our region. Our new diary is hot off the press for July to December 2023 with day trips to Southport on Wednesday 27th September 2023 and Brigg on Wednesday 29th November 2023. We also have trips to museums, afternoon teas and our new Brunch Bunch events at various cafes is proving popular, plus

lots of other events on the horizon. “Visiting new places together is a great way to get to know new people as there’s always something to talk about,” Branch Secretary, Lesley, added. “Members often come back discussing their new favourite pub or restaurant, or a local fact they’ve learnt along the way.” Susan Everatt, 75, from Rotherham, has been a member of South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire Oddfellows for two years, and enjoys realising the pleasures that are on her doorstep. She said: “I can’t think of a better way to spend my days than getting out and about in good company. It’s amazing how many hidden gems I’ve discovered. After retiring, it would have been easy to sit back too much, but with the South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire Oddfellows, my social life is more active than it ever has been. I have made some lovely friends. I had a breast cancer health scare last year and had to have surgery. I wouldn’t have known what to do without the support of the Oddfellows.”

MaYOR slaMs CUTs

South Yorkshire’s Mayor Oliver Coppard has today called the Government’s funding for South Yorkshire’s buses “completely unacceptable” as they impose further cuts to public transport in the region.

At today’s Mayoral Combined Authority Board meeting (Mon 31st July), the Mayor and local Leaders confirmed a series of measures to protect as many routes and services as possible across the region. South Yorkshire’s Mayor Oliver Coppard said: “The government’s promises to level-up by giving us a ‘London style transport system’ are in tatters. In the most recent round of funding, we got just 15% of the money going to other areas. I simply won’t accept that the people of South Yorkshire get just a fraction of the funding received by other communities here in the north, they are our friends and neighbours who I work for and represent. Make no mistake, the bus network in our region is broken. We’ve been failed by the privatisation of our buses and a series of governments who haven’t fixed the problem. And now we’re facing further cuts to routes, changes to services, and even having to stop some vital

cheaper fares because the government have again cut the money for South Yorkshire’s buses. Every day, people across Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield are having to deal with a bad bus network that is getting worse. We used to have a world-class public transport system here in South Yorkshire, but now we can’t rely on our buses, even to do the bare minimum: to get to work, to hospital or college, or to see friends and family. Locally, we’re doing everything we can to protect the network and fight these cuts. Every year we spend around £70 million pounds on our public transport system. We’re now using every available penny of our financial reserves to save as many routes as possible. But cuts to the funding we get from the government now mean our buses are going to get even worse. I’ve today written to the government demanding that they get around the table and look again at funding for South Yorkshire. We deserve and need a fair deal. At the very least we deserve the same support as other places in the north.”

A star-studded fundraising event will continue a family’s support for Weston Park Cancer Charity in memory of their much-loved mother and wife for a third year running.

BB With Love’s ‘Simply the Best 2023’ continues a longstanding partnership, which began when the Croke family decided to come together to celebrate the memory of Bev Croke – nicknamed ‘Beautiful Bev’, or ‘BB’ – who passed away aged 61 from breast cancer.

Bev, who sang in Sheffield Cancer Choir, committed herself to helping others going through cancer. Her children Matthew, Sean and Rachel, with their dad Michael, wanted to carry on that commitment by forming the charity – which has since raised more than £100,000 through ‘Simply the Best’, golf days and other fundraisers.

The night, which this year takes place on October 1st at Sheffield City Hall, brings together stars of television and the West End – including Dr Ranj, Billy Pearce, Hayley Tamaddon and returning host Gok Wan MBE. It’s inspired in part by the performing backgrounds of Rachel and Matthew, himself a West End star notable for starring in Aladdin, Wicked and the upcoming I Should Be So Lucky.

Sheffield Cancer Choir will also

The UK’s number 1 Arctic Monkeys tribute - Antarctic Monkeys - will be heading out on an extensive UK tour across 2023 and 2024.

The tour will kick off at Manchester’s O2 Ritz on 1 July, and will see the band take their distinctive and dynamic live show to venues across the UK including the O2 Academy in Sheffield on Saturday 23rd September.

Formed after a jamming session, Antarctic Monkeys have become a phenomenon in their own right, touring across the UK and Europe while forging a sound that rivals the original Turner, Cook, O’Malley and Helders style.

Firmly established on the tribute scene and with demand now higher than ever, Antarctic Monkeys’ live show has the power, passion and creative edge to whip audiences into a frenzy

give a special performance, alongside RMC Academy of Theatre – for whom Rachel is performance principal – Manor Operatic Society, and the BB With Love Orchestra and Pro Dance Squad.

Alongside raising funds to enhance treatment, provide support and enable research to ensure the best experience possible for the one in two people facing cancer in the region, ‘Simply the Best’ is also a showcase of the range of care and assistance available to those living with cancer.

Matthew and Rachel Croke said:

“Our mum had a huge heart and was always the one in the family to go above and beyond to share her love and warmth.

“Mental health awareness was so significant to her during her life and cancer battle, and she always wished for other people to have

the same support in Sheffield.

“Even if the money raised from Simply the Best only makes a modest difference for Weston Park Cancer Charity, it is one thousand percent worth it.”

Weston Park Cancer Charity chief executive Emma Clarke added:

“We’re so grateful to the Croke family for all they’ve done for our charity.

“BB With Love has raised a tremendous amount for us, which has directly fed into our support for people living with and beyond cancer diagnoses.

“And in donating 100 per cent of the money raised from ticket sales, they truly are continuing Bev’s selfless nature and creating a lasting and beautiful legacy for a much-loved woman.”

Recently, A group of friends came together with the idea of bringing the landmark Earl Grey pub at Rawmarsh, Rotherham, back to its former glory. They took it on with ideas of presenting Live Music and Real Ales as this is what people are

wanting more of; we all need a place to relax and let our worries drift away. This is where good music comes into play. After a lot of hard work landlord Matt and his team have put together a schedule of Live Music acts for locals and visitors from further afield to enjoy, starting with the Martin (Howlin’) Wolf Elvis Tribute this Friday, 11th August. There are more very good gigs appearing over the next few weeks and the team want your opinions. Listings will appear weekly in The Mercury and Facebook will carry any last minute updates. The Earl Grey welcomes you.

more costs' UK brewers and pubs plea

UK brewers and pubs are suffering cost increases as beer duty will reach the highest level it has ever been.

From last Tuesday brewers will pay 10.1% more tax on bottles and cans of beer, meaning tax will make up around 30% of the cost of a 500ml bottle. At the same time, duty paid on draught beer in pubs will be frozen but the tax increase on packaged beer is set to have an impact on both breweries and pubs, adding an extra £225million of costs per year across the industry, at a time when businesses and consumers have already been battling high inflation for months on end. The changes, which are being introduced as part of wider reforms announced in 2021, simplify the regime so that duty paid on all alcoholic drinks is relative to their strength (ABV).

The move is part of the Government's plan to incentivise the production of lower-strength alcoholic drinks, with products qualifying for the new lower rate of duty now being anything less than 3.5% up from 2.8% in the previous system.

The long-awaited introduction of this new system is a positive step forward, but with other cost increases showing no signs of let up and the overall rate rising due to inflationary pressures, pubs and brewers are pleading for Government to guarantee an end to price increases and stop further hikes to duty in the future.

"Our duty system was longoverdue reform, to better incentivise the production of lower-strength products and nudge consumers towards them. This is a very welcome change for our industry which will help to generate even more variety and greater innovation in our sector, as is the freeze for draught beer to support pubs.

"But brewers don't just supply draught products, they package beer in bottles and cans for enjoyment in pubs and at home as well, so the 10.1% duty increase will have a huge impact, and overall will likely lead to costs going up across the whole category.

"This will be on top of the enormous price hikes they've faced on energy, barley, wheat

and other key commodities across their supply chains over the past two years. The cost of consumer goods have risen on average by 24% in that period, but brewers have worked hard to keep the impact of disrupted supply chains and cost increases to customers at a minimum, with average cost of beer increasing by just half that, at 12% because the last thing they want to do is price people out of enjoying their favourite drinks.

"We need the Government to guarantee there will be no further increases to duty in the coming months, because there is only so long our brewers and the pubs they supply, can continue to shield customers from these rising costs so that a pint at the local remains affordable for everyone."

WE WILL GET BETTER AND BETTER OWLS SIGN MILAN STOPPER

Xisco saw signs from his team that bode well for the season following the opening day reverse against Southampton last Friday. The Owls were beaten by the odd goal in three when Che Adams came off the bench to score

the winning goal after Lee Gregory cancelled out Adam Armstrong’s early strike.

The Saints dominated a one-sided first half before Wednesday sparked into life in the second period only to be beaten at the last.

Xisco said: “The players gave everything against a very, very good side who keep the ball very well. I think it was a good performance with everything in consideration but we need to improve, and we will.

“We were in the game for 87 minutes and I am happy with the players with the way they came back into the game. This is the spirit I want to see in the dressing room.

“We were better in the second half and I know we will keep getting better and better. We lost the game but from what I have seen I know a victory is close.

“We are working together a very short time and we will get better. I say thank you to the fans for an incredible atmosphere and occasion and we will give them victory soon.”

BLADES FINISH PRE-SEASON WITH A LOSS

United’s final game of pre-season ended in defeat at Bramall Lane on Saturday afternoon.

Sehou Guirassy scored a hat-trick for VfB

Stuttgart and that was enough to settle the contest in their favour.

Striker Traore made his Blades debut against the Bundesliga outfit at S2, leading the line with Osula.

The visitors started brightly with Robinson

forced into a vital clearance before Foderingham denied Katompa. But in the eighth minute, Stuttgart took the lead with GUIRASSY firing home at the near post following a swift break down the left.

United looked for an instant response with Osborn drawing a save from Nubel, before Berge saw a shot deflected behind after a run from

the Norwegian had freed Ahmedhodžić in the area. But on 15 minutes

GUIRASSY scored from 12 yards out from a low Fuhrich cross.

Before the break, Traore produced a few lively moments including a shot after another Berge run, whilst Slimane saw his attempt cleared off the line having rounded Nubel. With the last action of the half though, Katompa broke clear and Foderingham had to stand tall to deny him a third goal.

Stuttgart should have made it three early in the second half, but Milot failed to apply the finishing touch after a poor clearance from Foderingham, before a

potential flashpoint was stopped when referee England brandished yellow cards to Robinson and Katompa after a disagreement between the pair.

As the hour approached, GUIRASSY completed his hat-trick with a confident finish, with Katompa claiming the assist. Osula had a chance to pull a goal back as he raced on to Berge’s through ball, but despite rounding Nubel. Traore’s afternoon came to an end on 73 minutes when Hackford was introduced, and the last action of note was Foderingham parrying behind Furich’s curling effort.

The Owls have added to the ranks with the signing of goalkeeper Devis Vasquez. The Colombian custodian joins Wednesday on a season-long loan from Italian giants AC Milan and becomes our eighth capture of the summer transfer window. After climbing through the youth ranks in

THE GOALS BEFORE HALF-TIME KILLED US

Millers boss Matt Taylor was disappointed with his side’s display at the bet365 Stadium as they suffered a hefty opening day defeat the hands of Stoke City.

FRUSTRATION AT OPENING DAY DEFEAT FOR ROVERS

Grant McCann was left frustrated with Rovers’ performance as they ended the opening day with a 1-0 defeat to Harrogate Town.

Jack Muldoon’s second half penalty was enough for the visitors to take all three points from the Eco-Power Stadium. And McCann was disappointed with the showing from his side.

BOURNE IS A BLADE

Sheffield United Women is delighted to confirm the signing of defender Tara Bourne from Barclays Women’s Super League side Manchester United ahead of the 2023/24 Barclays Women’s Championship season.

Bourne spent the first half of the 2021/22 season on loan with the Blades from United and now returns

Colombia with Cortulua and Patriotas, Vasquez moved across South America to Paraguay and signed for Guarani, making his senior debut in 2021 against Club Olimpia. The 25-year-old went on to claim a regular starting shirt and his impressive form between the sticks for Guarani earned a call-

Andre Vidigal and goals from Ki-Jana Hoever and Jacob Brown led to a sobering afternoon for the Millers while their woes were compounded when summer signing Cafu was red-carded for two bookable offences.

“The two goals before half-time really killed us. We weren’t good enough in any department in the first half. I can’t stand here and say that. It’s my responsibility. They played through, round

He said: “I thought we were poor in the first half. We just weren’t quite getting there to everything. Credit to Harrogate, I thought they were better than us in the first half and that’s disappointing for me to say.

“We knew it was going to take time but I didn’t expect the team to be that poor in the first half. We were way off it in every aspect of our game. You don’t win football games if you don’t get the basics right. “Second half we showed more fight but still nowhere near the levels we can be.”

on a permanent basis after spending last season with Birmingham City.

Bourne was a regular for the Blues last season, helping the team to a promotion push and second place in the league, but now returns to United ahead of the new season. The 20year-old has also been a regular in the England youth teams over the years and made 12 appearances for United during her initial loan spell. Speaking about returning to the club ahead of the new season,

up to the Colombian national side in January this year. At the same time, AC Milan swooped

and over us too often. It’s always comes down to individual moments but it would be wrong to point the finger at certain positions as collectively we weren’t good enough.

“I’m so frustrated with the second goal because we should have defended the set-piece better than we did. It was too easy with a clean header and a ball across the goal.

“We had to be realistic

Goalkepper Ian Lawlor was delighted to be back out in front of Rovers supporters despite his disappointment on how he re-debut for the club ended.

The keeper turned in a man of the match performance in the opening day clash with Harrogate Town, which ended in a 1-0 defeat courtesy of a second half penalty.

Lawlor was frustrated that he did not save Jack Muldoon’s spot kick but spoke of his happiness about his return to the club. “I loved it,” he said.

“I love being here and

Bourne said: “I’m really happy. I had a really good conversation with the manager and what I wanted aligned with what he said the ambitions of the clubs were, so it’s perfect for me.

“I feel like I’ve learned a lot since I was last here.

It’s amazing to be at Bramall Lane, it shows what the club is pushing to do, I can’t wait to get going.”

Head coach Jonathan Morgan is also happy to have added more quality to his squad with the arrival of the versatile

in what the challenge was in the second half. We asked for pride and a bit more character and personality. We got the goal and we felt better about ourselves. To go down to ten men against a team like Stoke was pretty brutal to watch. “We can certainly perform better than that. We can talk about a lot of excuses but it does not shy away from our first-half performance.”

everyone knows to me it’s like a second home. It’s nice to be back and I’m really enjoying it.

“I’ve always had a good relationship with the fans. They always supported me when I was here before and I want to repay that faith and give them something to cheer about. “It was a disappointing game. It’s always disappointing when you lose a football game. In the manner that I conceded the goal probably too and I’ll look back at that. I did think in the second half we gave a better account of ourselves.”

Bourne. “I’ve watched Tara from afar for a number of years and I’ve always been impressed in the games I’ve seen her play in. One thing that was a big attraction for me was her versatility, it’s key to have a number of players like that, but another thing that was massive was the more background research I did on her the more apparent it became she’s a fantastic character and a real team player and that’s integral to any success we want to have.”
