Airship compAny should use Airport

A Doncaster MP is calling for the company behind a plan to build airships in the city to base themselves at the former Doncaster Sheffield Airport.

Nick Fletcher, who represents Don Valley for the Conservatives, wants Hybrid Air Vehicles (HAV) to build its new factory at the airport site. The company confirmed it will start producing airships in Doncaster in 2024 and eventually employ 1,200 people.

Doncaster Sheffield Airport closed in late

2022 after 17 years in operation.

Airport owners Peel Group said the airport never made a profit, but Mr Fletcher said the site would be the ideal place to build the 90m (295ft) helium-filled airships thanks to recent investment in transport.

“The beauty with the airport is we have the links - like the new Yorkshire Way road,” said Mr Fletcher.

“From there it is straight onto the motorway which is going to make it a lot easier for the company to bring the

materials they need to the factory.”

HAV chief executive Tom Grundy said their plan involves investing £310m at a site in Doncaster, but a number of locations are in contention.

Staff at the airport Image caption, Doncaster Sheffield Airport closed in November 2022 after operating for 17 years

“Our plan is to start work this year, we’ll see aircraft in service with their first customers in 2026 or 2027,” Mr Grundy said.

“We are working with partners including South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority to select the best possible site.”

Each aircraft would carry about 100 passengers at around 90mph (145km/h), but with a 90% reduction in carbon when compared with an aeroplane.

South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority has approved a £7m loan to support the company’s development plans.

Oliver Coppard, the county’s elected mayor, said: “We have

a world-class cluster of companies working at the cutting edge of advanced manufacturing and green technology, so I’m genuinely excited that we can support HAV in their ambitions to build a sustainable aviation cluster here in Doncaster.”

The location of the airship factory is expected to be announced in the summer.

The city’s council is currently exploring options to buy the former airport site with a view to reopening it.

BLADES victory pArADE tHiS WEEK

After their 2 – 0 win against West Brom last week gained them automatic promotion, Sheffield United will be celebrating with the city with a victory parade on Thursday 11 May between 5:30pm-8pm. The open top bus, which will take the team’s players and coaching staff through the streets of Sheffield, will leave Bramall Lane stadium at 5.30pm, to arrive at the Sheffield Town Hall for around 6.30pm.

With the route closed to traffic, the open top bus will travel at walking pace to allow Sheffield United to greet people along the route.

Blades supporters can join in the celebrations outside the Town Hall in a traffic free fanzone, where the team will be presented to share their success and mark the occasion with loyal fans. After the parade, the team will attend a civic reception at the Town Hall.

Lord Mayor, Sioned-Mair Richards said: “Congratulations to Sheffield United on their promotion. The victory parade is a fantastic opportunity for the team and fans to come together to celebrate the team’s success and we will be

honoured to host the Blades at the Town Hall. “I’d like to remind fans to respect the city, each other and security staff if they’re coming into the city centre to watch the victory parade.”

United’s chief executive officer, Stephen Bettis, said: “Our thanks to Sheffield City Council for affording us the opportunity to celebrate our achievement with the people of the city.

“No doubt it will be a special event, we hope thousands of Unitedites will turn out to enjoy the moment with the players and management staff who have worked tremendously hard to secure this promotion.”

The bus will travel at walking pace accompanied by stewards to ensure people’s safety. People along the route are asked to adhere to the following:

• Do not follow the bus too closely. This is not only potentially very dangerous, but will also delay proceedings for the whole evening’s celebration.

• Are respectful of and listen to instructions from stewards

• Do not throw anything up in to the open top bus

During the parade some roads will be closed to allow the bus and fans to pass through. More details of the closures will be released via the council’s social channels.

lOOkING afTER YOUR HEdGEs

Spring has sprung once again and gardens are beginning to bloom - with flowers, trees and hedges growing at pace. But if your hedge protrudes onto a public paths or highways, it’s important to ensure it remains well maintained, otherwise you could find yourself footing a large bill from the authorities.

Charlotte Ellis, Legal Adviser at DAS Law explains how to stay on the “right side of the law” and avoid being a nuisance when it comes to your garden or driveway.

Protruding brambles – if a member of the public hurts themselves on a protruding bramble from my hedge, am I liable?

Providing fault can be established, hedge owners may be liable in this situation. Negligenceacts or omissions falling short of the reasonable standard - is a prerequisite for most personal injury claims. To bring a successful negligence claim, the injured party must demonstrate that the hedge owner owed them a duty of care and subsequently breached this obligation. Resulting injuries must have been reasonably foreseeable and victims will need to disclose evidence in support of their injuries. Crucially, personal injury claims need to be actioned in the courts within three years from the date on which the accident occurred. Prospects will need to be assessed if pursuing this type of claim as brambles, much like other invasive plant species, will grow exponentially in the summer months.

Therefore, it may possibly be seen as reasonable for hedge owners to maintain and cut the protruding brambles in the summer months to the reduce risk of injuries to members

pETs EasE wORRIEs

of the public. Moreover, any compensatory award would need to be proportionate to the injury suffered.

Is there a maximum encroachment of my hedge on a public footpath?

It is common for landowners to have public rights of way, namely public footpaths, running across their land. Local highway agencies can use the public purse to carry out routine maintenance work, but this does not absolve landowners from responsibility.

The Highways Act 1980 imposes a statutory duty on the Highway Authority to ensure that the surface is free from defect and suitable for the type of traffic ordinarily expected to use it. Whilst the responsibility for surface maintenance lies with the local authority, it is the duty of private landowners to facilitate the safe passage of this traffic. This means promptly repairing broken stiles, gates and fences and keeping paths clear from fallen trees, overgrown vegetation and parked vehicles. Under the aforementioned legislation, it is a criminal offence to obstruct a footpath or bridleway without lawful authority. Can the council come and cut my hedge without giving me notice first?

Section 154 of The Highways Act 1980 stipulates that where overhanging hedges, trees or shrubs endangers or obstructs the passage of vehicles or pedestrians or interfere with a street lamp, a competent authority may issue a notice to the hedge owner to remove the cause of the danger, obstruction or interference. Failure to comply with the notice within the specified timeframe can result in

the competent authority carrying out the necessary work. Where a neighbour complains about your hedge, the local authority can issue a remedial notice if two or more evergreen hedges exceed two metres in height by virtue of Section 66 of the Anti-social Behaviour Act 2003. Failure to comply with remedial notices carries criminal sanctions and the local authority reserves the right to recover any expenses reasonably incurred in order to carry out that work.

Debris – who is liable if a member of the public falls over a bag or pile of debris?

This depends on where the debris was left and who was responsible for leaving it behind. If a member of the public trips over the debris in a public place and reasonable steps weren’t taken to make the area safe, the injured person could bring a public liability claim against the organisation or authority who owns and/ or manages that area. Can I cut a neighbour’s hedge that is spilling on the pavement ?

Legally as a neighbour you have the right to abatement which means, you have the right to cut a neighbour’s hedge where it encroaches over the boundary of your property only. You have the right to cut encroaching branches back to the boundary line but must return these branches to the hedge owner as they are classed as their property. Take care when doing this as you may be liable if you cause the tree to die as a result of cutting back too much.

Ahead of Mental Health Awareness Week (1521 May), a leading vet charity is advocating keeping pets and their owners together through the cost of living crisis. Nearly all pet owners (94%) say that owning a pet makes them happy, according to new figures from the upcoming 2023 PDSA Animal Wellbeing (PAW) Report – and their support has been vital, especially as many people have been forced to make drastic cutbacks to stay afloat. While worrying figures have shown that as many as 770,000 owners are going without necessities in order to keep caring for their pets, almost half of owners (44%) have also said that their four-legged friend has been a lifeline during the cost of living crisis. Nearly all pet owners felt having a pet improved their lives, a comfort which is especially important as many feel the impact of the cost of living crisis. This figure is higher especially among dog and cat owners. The findings also highlight the benefits of having a pet on overall health, with 87% stating owning a pet makes them mentally healthier. While over two thirdsfeel it makes them physically healthier – a figure that is even higher among dog owners. Meanwhile, at a time where many people are having to juggle energy bills and soaring living costs, which can prove isolating, furry friends are essential when it comes to providing companionship. For example, the figures show that over four in five pet owners say that owning a pet makes them

feel less lonely. PDSA

Veterinary Surgeon, Lynne James, said: “Pets are family, and we know that pet owners will go to great lengths to ensure they can continue to care for their beloved pets. It vitally important that with everything pets do for us, we make sure that they have everything they need to live healthy and happy lives. Our latest figures show pets are invaluable, especially when their owners are going through hardship. As the cost of living crisis worsens, the work of charities like ours becomes vital, not only to provide essential veterinary care, but also to keep pets and their owners together in their time of need.

In 2022, we provided veterinary care for over 390,000 pets, whose owners would otherwise have struggled to afford the cost and may even have had to resort to other options such as rehoming – the mental health consequences of which are unimaginable. As Mental Health Awareness Week approaches, I’d like to encourage pet owners who are struggling due to rising costs, and who are concerned about being able to afford the cost of veterinary treatment to reach out to us. Our website includes a free eligibility checker to find out whether they’re able to access our services. We also have lots of free advice on how to reduce the cost of caring for pets, while ensuring they remain healthy and happy – something we hope will take a mental load off for many pet owners through the cost of living crisis.”

First aid sessions which aim to reduce the number of people on scooters or motorbikes killed or seriously injured is back for the start of the new riding season. BikerDown! is an interactive workshop offering riders and pillions the chance to learn basic first aid as well as gain an awareness of road traffic collision management. Delivered by South Yorkshire Police’s Community Safety Team, the session provides the knowledge to safely help at the scene of a collision, as well as administering potentially lifesaving first aid.

Margaret Lawson, Community Safety Manager, said: “As a rider you are more likely to filter through stationary traffic and be confronted with a collision, or come across an incident on remote country roads. By responding quickly, and with basic first aid, you can make a tremendous difference to a person’s chances of surviving. Although BikerDown! centres around a collision involving a rider, the skills and knowledge are equally as useful if you come across any vehicle whether four, three or two-wheeled.”

In South Yorkshire in 2021, 92 powered-two-wheeler riders were seriously injured in a road traffic collision and sadly eight of those riders lost their lives. And despite only making up around one per cent of vehicle traffic, statistics show that riders

account for around 20 per cent of road fatalities across Great Britain. A spokeswoman for South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership (SYSRP) said: “Motorcyclists are one of our priority road user groups and we continue to work with partner organisations, like the National Young Rider Forum, to offer advice and information to riders. The BikerDown! training is a valuable part of our toolkit as we work together to try and prevent unnecessary loss of life on our roads. Keeping riders safe is not just down to the riders themselves, we all have a part to play in safe road use and shared responsibility is key to saving lives. “

SYSRP recently launched a new casualty reduction strategy with a target of halving the number of people killed or seriously injured on local roads by the year 2030. Partners have adopted a Safe System approach to road safety which has five pillars of action, including Post-Collision Care, which BikerDown! is part of. Interventions are also being delivered under the remaining four pillars: Safe Road Users, Safe Roads, Safe Speeds and Safe Vehicles. Dates of upcoming BikerDown! courses can be found on the SYSRP website: https://sysrp. co.uk/bikerdown

The multi-platinum selling band, now in their 46th year, will be returning to their roots with a one-off show at The Leadmill this month to support the iconic venue, alongside raising funds for the Music Venue Trust.

The Leadmill show on Friday 19th May will be the band’s most intimate fully-electric hometown headline show in over 40 years, with only 850 tickets available for the special event. It takes place ahead of their massive stadium shows at Bramall Lane and Wembley Stadium the following week.

With The Leadmill still under threat of eviction from their landlord, Def Leppard pitched the show as a way of showing solidarity with their plight, and to highlight the venue’s cultural significance to the city. Proceeds from the show will also go towards the Music Venue Trust, a charity that champions and protects grassroots music venues across the UK.

“We’re absolutely delighted to be welcoming a band as legendary as Def Leppard onto our stage. The fact that a local act that has gone on to play stadiums across the world is willing to come back home and support us in a time of need (as well as thousands of other integral grassroots venues across the UK) speaks volumes

of their character. This will be the first time they’ve played The Leadmill, so it’s wonderful to be adding another chapter to Sheffield’s musical history.” Ben Hartley – Live Promoter

It’s creepy and it’s kooky, mysterious and spooky... it’s High Green’s upcoming musical, ‘The Addams Family’.

Wednesday Addams, the ultimate princess of darkness, has grown up and fallen in love with a sweet, smart young man from a respectable family. And if that wasn’t upsetting enough, Wednesday confides in her father and begs him not to tell her mother. Now, Gomez Addams must do something he’s never done before – keep a secret from his beloved wife, Morticia. Everything will change for the whole family on the fateful night they host a dinner for Wednesday’s “normal” boyfriend and his parents. Jonney Glaves will be playing the part of Gomez. Jonney joined the group back in 2018 and usually plays our pantomime

Dame. Jonney says “I love playing Gomez. Being a father myself, the role of Gomez means a lot to me. I love his accent and I especially enjoy rolling my R’s when singing my songs. I am particularly looking forward to preforming the Tango, it’s out of my comfort zone but I enjoy a challenge.”

If you’ve been to a High Green show before you will recognise some of our familiar faces in leading roles. We also have some fabulous new members, such as Carpenter Lockwood who is playing Morticia Addams.

The show takes place at the EPPiC Theatre, Well Lane, Ecclesfield from the 13th to the 17th of June 2023. Tickets are on sale now from the Box Office 0114 4388698, email info@ hgmtg.co.uk or direct via www. ticketsource.co.uk/HGMTG

BLADES END SEASON ON A HIGH

United signed off a memorable promotion winning campaign with a deserved away win at Birmingham City on Bank Holiday Monday.

Second half goals from Oli McBurnie and James McAtee proved enough to see the Blades end the season with 91 points, despite a late consolation from Dion Sanderson. Boss Heckingbottom made five changes for the clash at St Andrew’s, with Davies, Stevens, Fleck, McBurnie and Doyle all handed starts for the season finale.

But after something of a slow start from both teams, it was City who had the first chance of what we become an open game. Bacuna whipped in an inviting cross from a short corner, but under pressure from Robinson, Jutkiewicz headed against the crossbar. At the other end McAtee saw an effort blocked by Sanderson, before Trusty did likewise to deny Stevens, before Ndiaye saw his shot deflected behind after a trademark mazy run. On 33 minutes, Doyle

placed an effort against the post, before the ball fell to McAtee who struck the same area of the woodwork on the rebound, with the half ending with the Blades pressing for the opener, as Stevens sent a dipping effort narrowly wide of the far post.

The opening moments of the second period proved decisive as United netted twice in three minutes, with MCBURNIE glancing a header home from Basham’s cross, before MCATEE tapped into an empty net after Ndiaye

had rounded Etheridge from Robinson’s ball over the top. That prompted a double change from United, with Osula and Sharp introduced to the action, joining Berge who had replaced the injured Baldock prior to the goals.

Chances continued to come United’s way with Berge denied having latched on to a Stevens pass, before Osula dragged an effort wide after a mistake by the retreating Roberts. Dean lunged in horribly on Ndiaye, before Norwood and Buyabu, for his

debut, were given cameo appearances.

On 79 minutes, the Blues gave themselves a lifeline as SANDERSON volleyed home from 16 yards out after Roberts had kept alive a free-kick from the right, but typically it was the Blades who finished on the front foot, with Osula missing another couple of opportunities and Sharp being denied at the near post in search of his 250th goal from Doyle’s cross. But it all mattered not a jot as United ended on a high in the midlands.

With the regular season having reached its conclusion over the weekend, all focus now turns to the play-offs.

Wednesday and Peterborough will go head-to-head in the League One play-off semi-finals to battle for a place at Wembley. Despite missing out on automatic promotion, the Owls can reflect on an incredible campaign filled with huge highs and broken records but the biggest challenge lies ahead.

Liam Palmer believes Wednesday head into the semi-finals in the right manner with four wins on the bounce – including Sunday’s triumph over Derby at a sold-out Hillsborough. It was a terrific

atmosphere as the Owls inflicted a damaging defeat on the Rams and Palmer says the team will need all the support in the crucial games ahead.

“We knew Derby had a lot riding on it but so did we because we wanted to go into the play-offs having won the last four games which we managed to do.

“We wanted to finish the normal season strong at home, we have a good home record and this was another one we can add to the clean sheet total as well.

“I think we’re up to 24 clean sheets now and that’s what we set out to do on Sunday.”

The first leg will take place in front of the Sky Sports cameras at the Weston Homes Stadium

on Friday night (8:00pm).

Palmer continued: “So now we move on to Friday, we will regroup and go again. “We wanted the 96 points and to give the fans something to shout about.

“We go into the play-offs confident and in good form, we’ll go back to the drawing board, look how we set up against

Peterborough and start the first leg strong.

“It was great to walk out at Hillsborough to a sea of blue and white everywhere and we want to thank the fans for their support all season and we’ll need them for hopefully another three games.

“I’m sure they will sing us home and hopefully we can get the job done.”

Millers boss Matt Taylor was quick to pay tribute to the season-long efforts of his side as they preserved their Championship status against all the odds. The Millers ended their campaign with a goalless draw with already-relegated Wigan Athletic, but it mattered little, as Taylor’s side were serenaded by over

4,300 travelling fans, who provided a carnival feel to a rain-soaked DW Stadium in the season finale. “We did our work last week. It would have been nice to take three points from today. I thought we were quite bright in the first half. We created enough chances to probably be ahead in the game. The second half was a bit

disjointed. I’m pleased to get to that 50 point mark. It’s a big boost for this football club. We’ve got a little bit of time to digest and reflect and improve for next season.”

“Now is the time to thank the fans for their efforts this season. We have ups and downs. We have had difficult times and good times but we have been

successful in what we started out to be. This has given me more clarity in where I want to take this football club. “One of the reasons I came to this football club was to achieve something, and we have achieved something right now by staying at Championship level and getting to 50 points. We now have time to build again.”

mA xwELL: NO ONE HAS GUARANTEED THEmSELF A START NExT SEASON

James Maxwell believes no Rovers player has done enough to guarantee themself a starting berth for the side next season. Reflecting on the campaign as a whole after making his return from injury in the final game of the season at Walsall, the full back said that all places are up for grabs next term as Rovers look for significant improvement on the pitch.

Maxwell on how the game played out: “The first half was pretty even and there wasn’t very much in the game. It took us a bit of time to get up to speed. I thought defensively we didn’t look too bothered apart from the first five minutes or so.

I thought they dealt with it better. We made the point after the game that a lot of the times when we go up and compete, it’s not clean enough.

“Overall, we were not good enough and we’ve come up short.”

On the season as a whole:

“There’s not much more you can say. We’ve had moments in games, ten or 15 minute spells where we look really good. Towards the end of this one we looked like we could score but for 60 minutes, did we look like we could score?

Probably not.

“It’s hard to put a positive spin, especially in the last couple of months where we’ve been below par.”

On the need for greater physicality:

“I think it needs to be a big part of the summer, that the lads that are here go and put on some size.

Sometimes it’s not even about size - it’s about personality and that commitment and intensity which I think we can do

better. The manager has talked about it and also in the players that we bring in, we need to be more physical.”

On the summer:

“It’s a huge summer. I think no one has done enough to say they’re going to be a starter next year. Places are definitely up for grabs and we need to bring in competition for places. We need to bring in better players than what we’ve got because ultimately that’s what it boils down to. A lot of the time us players feel the gameplan and what we’re being sent out to do is right. We all believe in it 100 per cent but we know as players, that individual moments cost us and it’s been like that all season.”

On the mood in the camp:

“It’s not been negative in any way but to say that the

place has been bouncing would be a lie because of where we are. We know this club has been at higher levels and this is a really poor finishing position for us.”

On being back from injury:

“I was hoping to be back a couple of games earlier and I was trying to push but I wasn’t ready. It would have been easy to sit this one out and leave it until the end of the season but the lads have been struggling and myself I was champing at the bit to play and get some minutes.

“I wanted to at least get some good minutes, get some work in and make sure the injury didn’t finish my season because it came at a bad time. It was a good intensity when I go in there.”
