EvErybody’s Talking abouT Eurovision

Grab your heels and your sequins, Sheffield is set to host its biggest free drag show as part of the city’s ultimate Eurovision party!

Sheffield is set to become a sea of sparkles as the city welcomes Jamie Campbell, inspiration for the hit musical Everybody’s Talking

About Jamie, to host a drag spectacular on Devonshire Green as part of the city’s Eurovision celebrations.

The show will celebrate all things Eurovision and honour the Ukrainian community, who will be joining the party

throughout the day. Acts will include Yshee Black, Birmingham’s premiere drag queen and local drag queens including Emma Maezing and more. Luke Bayer, West End star and the original alternative Jamie New in London, will be singing songs from the musical to get people in the party mood. The party will be hosted by Jamie Campbell, the drag queen who inspired the hit Sheffield-based musical and film Everybody’s Talking About Jamie. Jamie’s performance will celebrate the rich queer history between

the LGBTQ+ community and the Eurovision song contest. Expect sparkles and surprises along the way!

Chief Executive for Sheffield City Council, Kate Josephs said: “Everybody’s talking about Eurovision and Jamie’s drag show is a brilliant opportunity to celebrate Sheffield’s diversity, expression, and creativity. We are so pleased to work with Jamie Campbell to put on this spectacular celebration for the city.

“This family-friendly show will bring glitter and glam to Devonshire

Green in a party to rival Liverpool’s. We’re throwing the biggest free drag show the city centre has ever seen, and we can’t wait to welcome everybody to Sheffield’s Official Eurovision Party.” Jamie Campbell said: “I am so excited to bring this fabulous drag show to Sheffield to honour Eurovision, Ukraine, and the LGBTQ+ community. I know how much Sheffield loves to party and I’m looking forward to bringing some of the best queens in the country to Devonshire Green to celebrate Eurovision.

Featuring a big screen on Devonshire Green, Sheffield’s free official Eurovision Party will be jam packed with all of the glitz and glam you have come to expect. As well as the fabulous drag show Devonshire Green will be hosting street performers, dance acts, traditional Ukrainian musicians and Marina Krutь – who came second in the competition to be this year’s Ukrainian entry with 33,000 votes and will be travelling over from Ukraine to join the party.

Join the Big help out and support st luke’s hospice

St Luke’s Hospice is set to celebrate the coronation of King Charles III with a month of volunteering opportunities. National project The Big Help Out is using the Coronation Bank Holiday, Monday May 8, as the starting point of a campaign to encourage people to support their local communities. And the St Luke’s team has decided to go one step further and create a full month-long event, going all the way through to June 8, also covering National Volunteering Week.

“We have various ways people can get involved across the month, whether they sign up to volunteer at one of our events, as a corporate group, or at one of our 14 shops across the city,” said St Luke’s Volunteer Coordinator Leah Smith.

“At any one time in the year we have more than

700 people signed up to support St Luke’s but at this very special time of national celebration we would love to think there are many more people who could give us some of their time. “It doesn’t have to be a massive commitment but any amount of time at all that you can give will make a massive difference to the lives of our patients and their families.”

Mature job seekers can face many challenges, including being perceived as overqualified, less innovative, or lowerenergy than their younger peers. Fortunately, your cover letter is a powerful tool that allows you to frame your experience and skills in a positive and attractive light, especially when you mention these three things.

1. Explanation of Your Current Situation

Right off the bat, it’s best to address what is likely to be the hiring manager’s first question: Why are you looking for a new job at this point in your life? Perhaps you took time off from your career to raise your children, to care for an ailing family member, or to overcome an illness yourself. If you have a gap in your work experience, give a brief explanation in your cover letter and mention how you have kept your skills current through attending industry events, completing continuing education courses, or whatever it may be. If you are applying to a more senior role within your industry, make it clear how your experience and skills have prepared you to succeed. In this scenario, a long and successful career will likely work in your favor. Or, if you are looking to change careers by applying to roles for which you are technically overqualified, reassure the hiring manager that you aren’t planning to leave as soon as a better opportunity comes along. For example, you could write that you are looking to ramp down your responsibilities in the later stages of your career in order to promote a better work-life balance.

advICE fOR vOTERs - NEw pOllING daY RUlEs

2. Relevant and Transferable Skills

The next thing a hiring manager is likely to look at is whether you have the skills necessary for the position. While you can list your skills on your resume, use your cover letter as an opportunity to expand on these skills and to present realworld examples of how you’ve honed your skills and how they’ve helped you succeed. Be sure to include both hard and soft skills to show the hiring manager that you are a well-rounded candidate. Hard skills are measurable and job-specific, like the ability to use Adobe design software or holding a Realtor certification. Soft skills are less tangible and often aren’t specific to a job or industry, such as leadership ability, communication skills, and so forth.

3. Proficiency with Technology

Particularly in heavily tech-reliant fields, some hiring managers may have qualms about hiring a more mature candidate who might not be as proficient with current technologies as a younger person. Even in roles that aren’t necessarily techbased, it’s still important to be able to use software such as POS systems, digital communication platforms, online databases, and so forth. As such, it’s important to make it clear in your cover letter as well as on your resume that you are up-to-speed with industry technology and able to learn and adopt new tech quickly.

The May elections are nearly here so below is a useful guide to what to expect when voting in person on Thursday 4 May.

Where is my polling station?

If you have registered to vote, you will receive a poll card through the post from your local council. It will tell you where your polling station is. Make sure you check your poll card before heading out to vote, in case your polling station has changed since you last voted. You can also find out where your polling station is on our website, by entering your postcode.

Polling stations are open from 07.00 until 22.00.

You can vote at any time within this window. And don’t forget, you need to go to your designated polling station; you can’t go to a different one, for example, near where you work.

Do I need to take anything with me?

Yes, you now need to bring an accepted form of photographic ID in order to receive your ballot paper. The full list of accepted forms is available on the Electoral Commission website. You can bring your poll card with you on the day, but this isn’t necessary, and it won’t be accepted as a form of ID. You can also bring your own pen or pencil if you prefer, but there will be pencils at the polling station as well.

What if I do not want my ID to be checked in public?

You can ask to have your ID checked in private.

You can also request that a female member of staff checks your ID. This

request will be granted if possible. If you wear a face covering for any reason, such as a mask worn for medical reasons or a face veil worn on religious grounds, you will be asked to momentarily remove it so polling station staff can check your photo ID looks like you. Face coverings can be worn for the rest of the voting process. How do I complete the ballot paper?

Take your time: read the ballot paper carefully and complete it in line with the instructions. Don’t write anything else on the paper, or your vote may not be counted. If you make a mistake, don’t worry – as long as you haven’t already put it in the ballot box, just let the polling station staff know and they can give you a replacement ballot paper. What if I need help?

If you’re not sure what to do, or need any help, just ask the staff at the polling station – they will be happy to assist you. What if I have access issues?

Changes introduced in the Elections Act permit disabled voters to choose anyone who is over 18 to accompany them in the polling station to help them vote. If you have a disability which means you can’t fill in the ballot paper yourself, you can ask the presiding officer –the person in charge of the polling station - to mark the ballot paper for you, or you can take someone along with you to help you. If you have any questions about what will be available at the polling station, you can contact your local council. Should I tell anyone who I voted for?

Your vote is yours and yours alone: you do not need to tell anyone how you voted. Exit polls are sometimes conducted, where people – usually private companies working for newspapers or broadcasters – ask voters leaving the polling station who they voted for to help them predict what the outcome might be. You do not need to respond to their questions if you don’t want to.

Political discussion is not allowed inside and immediately around the polling station and staff will ask you to stop so that there’s no risk of influencing other voters. If you want to debate your vote with friends or family, do it away from the polling station. What are ‘tellers’? Why are they asking for the number on my poll card? You might see people outside the polling station who ask you for the number on your poll card. These people are called ‘tellers’, and are volunteering on behalf of candidates or parties. They will use the information you give them to check who has voted, and to remind people who haven’t yet voted, to do so. They are allowed to be there and to ask for the information, but you don’t have to give them any information if

you don’t want to. If you are concerned about the conduct of a teller, speak to a member of staff at the polling station.

Can I take selfies or other photos while I’m voting? You shouldn’t take photos inside the polling station as it might put the secrecy of the ballot at risk. You are more than welcome to take photos outside the polling station and share them on social media to encourage your friends and family to vote.

Can I take my friend / partner / children / parents / dog?

You can go along to the polling station with whomever you like, but only those registered to vote at that station will be able to go inside. You must not be accompanied into the polling booth by another adult, unless you have a disability, in which case you can take someone in to help you, or you can ask one of the polling station staff for their help. Children are welcome at polling stations. While your child must not mark the ballot paper for you, you will be allowed to take them into the polling booth with you. With the exception of assistance dogs, animals are not usually allowed inside polling stations, so will need to be secured outside if you do decide to take them with you.

TIps fOR skIN CaNCER MONTH

The most common form of cancer in the UK, skin cancer kills more than 3,200 people each year, with at least 172,000 diagnoses each year. There are two main types: melanoma and non-melanoma. While melanoma is less common, it’s also more deadly, and stats from Cancer Research show that the vast majority of cases (86%) are preventable.

“Skin cancer is the result of mutations in skin cell DNA from exposure to UV light and other carcinogens,” explains Dr Antony Nakhla, skin cancer surgeon. That’s why it’s so important to be aware of the risk factors –and why Sun Awareness Week (May 1 to 7) is held annually. Here, Nakhla sets out five things he wants everyone to know about staying protected and preventing skin cancer…

1. Make sure kids are protected “The majority of sun damage occurs in childhood, ” Nakhla says. “Thus, it is crucial to protect children from sunburns and overexposure to sun.”

Parents should use SPF 50 on kids – or better yet keep them covered with UV protection clothing when they’re in the sun. During summer or while on holiday, it’s best to stay in the shade when UV rays are strongest, from 11am to 3pm.

2. Use plenty of sun block Sunscreen should be applied at least 15 minutes before any sun exposure – and don’t scrimp on the lotion. “It is important to not only wear sunscreen, but to wear enough of it,” Nakhla says. As a rough guide, he advises: “A teaspoon for the face. A full shot glass for the body.”

3. Reapply regularly

It’s not enough to slather yourself in sunblock first thing in the morning then forget about it.

“Reapplication is key when extended hours are planned in the sun,” Nakhla says. “One should reapply every two hours or so, depending on activities ”

4. Don’t underestimate the risk

“While lighter skin types are more prone to developing skin cancer, all skin types can develop skin cancer, including the deadliest type – melanoma,” Nakhla explains. Whatever your skin type, you should still use sunscreen and never let skin burn.

5. If in doubt, check it out

Skin cancer specialists recommend keeping an eye on moles (especially if you have a lot), watching out for any changes in shape, size, colour or texture. If in doubt, consult your GP, who may refer your to a specialist for further investigation.

The combination of the King’s Coronation, Eurovision and three bank holidays means hospitality is set for a bumper month, according to UKHospitality.

The long history of bank holidays providing a boost to footfall and sales, in addition to the first Coronation in 70 years and Eurovision being held in the UK, has contributed to the analysis by UKHospitality that hospitality is in store for an estimated boost of £1 billion.

The King’s Coronation bank holiday weekend alone is set to deliver an individual boost of £350 million to the sector. The bumper month would come at a crucial time for a sector that is contending with a significant increase in energy costs, record food and drink inflation, continued staffing shortages and a fresh set of rail strikes.

UKHospitality Chief Executive Kate Nicholls said: “May has the potential to be a historic month for the hospitality sector, which is set for one of its busiest times in recent memory.

“We know the British public turn out in their droves for big events and we expect the Coronation and Eurovision to be no different. “Whether it’s the traditional street party to celebrate the King or a watch party in Liverpool for Eurovision, hospitality will be at the centre of both events and we anticipate this will translate to a huge uplift in sales for the sector. “Bank holidays alone are always popular for eating and drinking out and staycations and combining this with two historic occasions is incredibly exciting for hospitality, at a time when the support of the public is absolutely essential to its survival.”

BLADES CELEBRATE WITH A WIN

Despite the midweek celebrations having secured automatic promotion, United made it five consecutive league wins at Bramall Lane, with a comprehensive success over play-off hopefuls

Preston North End.

Three late goals secured the spoils at a soggy S2, prior to the medal presentation that followed post-match, after Liam Delap had cancelled out a seventh goal of the season for defender Anel Ahmedhodžić, with the Bosnian heading home Tommy Doyle’s first-half corner.

Boss Heckingbottom made four changes from the starting XI that overcame West Brom, with Basham, Sharp, Norwood and Bogle all recalled to face the Lilywhites, with Baldock, Berge, McBurnie and Egan dropping to the bench. Both teams had a sight of goal in the opening exchanges, as Doyle saw a shot blocked at the expense of a corner

at one end, before Onomah’s tame effort was gathered was Foderingham at the other. The best chance of the half came United’s way midway through the first half as Ndiaye raced away having got the better of Fernandez, but Woodman stood tall to deny McAtee.

On 36 minutes though, United duly hit the front, with AHMEDHODZIC rising highest to glance home a header into the far corner from Doyle’s inviting corner. The Manchester City loanee looked to double the lead moments later as he took aim from 20 yards, but Woodman tipped it round the post, before Robinson fired an effort wide from the resulting corner. Having opened the scoring United had gone on to dominate proceedings, but Woodman kept the visitors in the contest as he tipped over Norwood’s dipping free kick after Bauer had upended the advancing Ndiaye.

The visitors had a rare

STICK TOGETHER & MOVE FOREWARD

sight of goal minutes after the restart as Cannon found himself in on the angle following a couple of fortunate bounces, but Foderingham was out quickly to avert the potential danger. At the other end, Woodman denied Ndiaye following a mistake by Fernandez, before Bauer blocked McAtee on the rebound, as Parrott was then booked for cynically halting the progress of the City loanee.

Around the hour, Doyle and Sharp both received warm applause as Berge and Jebbison were introduced and the latter would go to produce a man of the match cameo, but not before DELAP restored parity on 63 minutes sliding home a low cross in from Potts.

FLECK replaced McAtee on 69 minutes and netted his first goal of the campaign moments later as he powered forward to join a counter and following a back heel by Jebbison and a fortunate deflection the ball nestled in Woodman’s far corner to the delight of

the Kop. On 75 minutes, the lead was extended further, with Jebbison again claiming the assist, this time putting the ball on a plate for NDIAYE to fire home his 15th goal of the season in all competitions, with a booking for taking his shirt off in celebration absolutely immaterial. The Senegalese star was then replaced along with the ever-reliable Robinson, with McBurnie and Egan handed some late minutes. North End had strong appeals for a penalty waved away by referee Martin as Ahmedhodžić appeared to catch Delap and deep into seven minutes of added time, MCBURNIE add the cherry to the icing on top of the cake, volleying home the fourth from Basham’s cross with not even the wet weather able to dampen further celebrations post-match.

OWLS AWARD WINNERS

The Sheffield Wednesday Player of the Season Awards took place at Hillsborough on Sunday evening.

The manager, his staff and all players were in attendance as the presentations were made in the club’s 1867 Lounge. The star of the show was Liam Palmer who scooped a raft of awards on the night including the official SWFC Player of the Year gong, as

voted for by supporters via swfc.co.uk. Palmer, who is approaching 400 appearances for the club, was also named Players’ Player of the Season as well as receiving a prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award for his services to the club over the past two decades.

Will Vaulks was amongst the winners scooping the club’s Community Player of the Season and Goal of

the Season for his wonder strike away at Port Vale. Michael Smith picked up the Owls’ Golden Boot Award with the striker on 19 goals for the campaign after scoring his hat-trick away at Shrewsbury on Saturday.

The Owls league campaign concludes against Derby on Sunday at Hillsborough before full focus turns to the play-offs which begin for Darren Moore’s men on Friday 12 May.

Darren Moore was pleased with the assurance his side showed following our 3-0 win over Shrewsbury at Montgomery Waters Meadow.

Michael Smith netted his maiden Owls hat-trick to put the club on 93 League One points. Moore said: “We played with assurance and confidence and from start to finish we didn’t allow Shrewsbury any real momentum in the game, because we know they can be dangerous here.

“I thought the pitch played well today and with the rain coming down it added a bit of grease to it which helped us in terms of moving the ball around.”

Despite victory in Shropshire, results

elsewhere ended hopes of automatic promotion for Wednesday, so a playoff campaign will follow our league finale against Derby.

Moore insisted the team’s focus now shifts to a big opportunity and he praised his players for their achievements so far this season.

The Owls gaffer added:

“What we have now is a wonderful opportunity and that’s what we’ve got to be looking at.

“I said it on Friday, I won’t look back because it takes energy, and unspent energy isn’t what we need.

“The points we’ve got this season and the records we have broken are there to be enjoyed, we’ve had to achieve those

things to put us in the position where we are now, and we still have an opportunity.

“Everyone should take credit for what the club has done this season.

If you look at the last two years, we’ve shown great progression, and that’s down to everyone involved.

“We pushed on this season, the points tally that we have, we know over the course of any other season where we would be. But we know we’re not in any other season, we’re here in 2023 and we continue to look forward.

“Of course, I’m disappointed not to get automatic, but we have another opportunity.”

Wednesdayites were in

fine voice in Shrewsbury and Moore explained how vital they will be in the final month of the campaign.

He added: “The fans were tremendous. I said to the boys, ‘you’ve seen the reaction and they have complete belief and trust, they are with you all the way.’

“We’ve got a full house to look forward to next week in S6 against good opposition and we focus all our attention onto that game.

“We had another full awayday travel today and we have a full house next week. So, it goes to show where their mindset is at.

“The biggest message I have for everybody is stick together and keep moving forward.”

MILLERS GUARENTEE SAFETY

Rotherham United will be playing Sky Bet Championship football next season as a superb victory over play-off incumbents Middlesbrough guaranteed their safety with one game to go. Hakeem Odoffin’s fourth goal of the season proved critical as the Millers got the necessary points they needed to ensure their status in England’s second tier rendering their last day visit to Wigan Athletic meaningless.

Millers boss Matt

The atmosphere was at fever pitch, prior to kick-off, at a sold-out AESSEAL New York Stadium with both sets of supporters creating a cacophony of noise. Rotherham were quick out of the blocks and Chiedozie Ogbene forced an early corner and Wood – in what could prove to be his last home appearance for the club – made a nuisance of himself from the following corner in an aerial duel with Zack Steffen but a foul was awarded.

In a lively opening, Cameron Archer blazed over from a tight angle after meeting McGree’s cross before Hayden Hackney deservedly became the first to see yellow for cynically hauling down Ogbene in full flow. The Republic of Ireland flyer was left grounded following the incident, and he was deemed to be in no position to continue, as he went straight down the tunnel for further treatment

with Tariqe Fosu replacing him.

The Millers had a scare when ‘Boro attacked with menace and Chuba Akpom had a sight of goal, but a last-ditch tackle from Cohen Bramall halted his progress, although all those of a Middlesbrough persuasion were appealing for a spot kick but the protests were waved away by the referee.

The home fans had a penalty call of their own when the ball appeared to strike the arm of Darragh Lenihan just inside the box, but no further action was taken.

Taylor was forced into another reshuffle when Ferguson had to leave the fray just before half-time after he failed to shrug off a knock sustained earlier in the game and homegrown star Ben Wiles was thrust into action.

There was further drama to come in the five minutes of first-half stoppage time and Fosu nudged the ball forward into the path of Hugill, who looked to break clear into the ‘Boro box but Anfernee Dijksteel illegally halted his progress, by hauling him over.

With the referee adjudging Dijksteel to be last man, a red card was brandished to the ‘Boro defender.

The Millers made the perfect start to the second half when they broke the deadlock just three minutes into the half.

The home side worked the ball up field with Fosu and Rathbone paved the

way for Odoffin, to weigh up his options before striking a lovely effort from distance and Steffen – who appeared to have his view obstructed by a ‘Boro defender – was helpless, as the ball fizzed into the corner of the visiting net.

The goal sent the AESSEAL New York Stadium into ecstasy with Odoffin leading the celebrations, soon followed by his team mates.

Despite their numerical disadvantage, ‘Boro were still posing a considerable threat with Barlaser at the thick of things on his old stomping ground, but his free-kick was cleared away before he blasted over from long-range.

The Millers fans were up in arms when Odoffin was yellow carded for trying to re-enter the field of play without permission following an injury. It was the Millers goalscorer’s last involvement as he was replaced soon after – with Taylor making a double substitution in the shape of Georgie Kelly and Leo Hjelde.

The Irish striker made his presence felt immediately when Rathbone knocked the ball into his path, and Lenihan in a lastditch attempt to stop him advancing on goal, bundled him over but with the Millers fans and players baying for a second redcard for professional fouls this time, the referee waved play on.

There was further controversy at the

other end when Isaiah Jones appeared to be nudged over by Cameron Humphreys in the Millers box, but, again the referee took no further action to the consternation of the ‘Boro faithful.

A tense finish was anticipated, and Millers nerves were heightened when Fosu was stripped of possession and Akpom’s snap shot was deflected behind.

Moments later, Johansson made a superb claim under pressure from Akpom from Jones’ hanging cross before Lenihan was inches away from meeting Barlaser’s free-kick, but a timely Rotherham foot diffused the danger.

The pressure was released on the hosts when Bramall embarked on a lungbursting run from deep inside his own half to win a throw up field.

Relief was only temporary though as ‘Boro switched play to great effect and Bola’s cross took a wicked deflection off Lindsay, but Johansson – not for the first time this season –flew through the air at full stretch to palm the ball to safety.

Taylor’s side successfully ran down the clock before the final whistle brought acclaim from all four corners of the AESSEAL New York Stadium – with the ‘Boro fans also respectful of the achievement of their hosts.
