south yorks transport Granted £44m to move forward

Transport schemes in South Yorkshire have been granted £44m to move ahead.

The programme includes money for the construction of Barnsley’s Market Gate Bridge and road layout changes in

Kelham and Neepsend in Sheffield.

Funding for new cycle routes and bus lanes in Rotherham was also approved by South Yorkshire’s mayor and council leaders last Monday (6/3).

Mayor Oliver Coppard said the projects would make the region “a better place to live, work and invest”.

Among the schemes the Mayoral Combined Authority approved was £8.1m to provide better cycle paths on Sheffield Road, Rotherham, to encourage active travel between Tinsley and the town centre.

A scheme to add or extend bus lanes on part of the A631 between Maltby and Rotherham was also given the goahead.

Plans to change the road layout at Neepsend and Kelham in Sheffield to

create more space for cyclists and pedestrians were also granted funding.

A project to replace 11 diesel minibuses with electric vehicles for community transport groups in Sheffield, Doncaster, Rotherham and Barnsley was awarded £1.4m. A further £2.5m will support plans to build a pedestrian bridge over the Sheffield to Leeds railway line in Barnsley. The authority also provided £6.5m of funding towards the redevelopment of Doncaster Waterfront, £2.4m for improvements

at Rotherham’s markets complex and £3m for the development of Sheffield’s West Bar project.

Mr Coppard said: “When I was elected last May, I promised to renew South Yorkshire, and make our region healthier, more prosperous and more sustainable.

“We want our communities to be able to thrive and these projects and schemes will make a real, tangible difference to our future.”

DON’T PANIC!! SALUTE TO DADS ARMY VARIETY SHOW

Dont Panic, but at 1pm on the saturday 1st april, the home guard will be marching into The Victoria Hall in Sheffield city centre to perform ‘a salute to the 1940’s Dads army Variety show’.

Local duo Gary Birtles and Lorrie Brown produced the show and are regular performers at The Garrison in Hillsborough and Fairways Inn at Birley with their lunchtime tribute shows.

of the show, they march through the audience and get the crowd clapping along before they walk onto the stage.”

In between the sketches featuring the characters, the show also features tributes to some of the great variety acts of WW2, including Lorrie’s tribute to Vera Lynn, Flanagan and Allen, George Formby, Gracie Fields and a special duet performing Whispering Grass from ‘It Aint Half Hot Mum’.

have all developed a real chemistry on stage.”

The role of Captain Mainwaring is played by top George Formby tribute Colin Bourdiec.

Gary says, “Colin has really taken to the role and the resemblance is uncanny.”

family business offers complete funeral service

Eric Eyre Funeral Service understands how difficult the process of planning a funeral for a loved one can be and offer a bespoke funeral service, whilst continuing to uphold traditional values.

Established since 1864, Eric took over the business in 1955 and has been looking after families in the local community and surrounding areas of Sheffield, Barnsley and Rotherham ever since, with branches at High Green and Sheffield Lane Top.

Available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and with decades of experience in guiding bereaved clients through this difficult time, Eric Eyre provide a professional yet personal service, caring for you and your loved ones while facilitating the necessary funeral arrangements and ensuring your wishes are carried out with care and compassion. Eric Eyre go the extra mile to provide an exceptional service and will take responsibility for ensuring everything is perfectly organised to deliver a fitting tribute to your loved one’s life story. “Just as other aspects of life have evolved, so has society’s approach to funerals, with modern funerals a very different affair to the traditional, formal black-tie events of years gone by,” says Wayne Pickering, manager at Eric Eyre Funeral Service. “For many, a funeral has moved from being a sombre affair to a celebration of life – complete with all that you’d expect from any other celebration, including music, entertainment and laughter. That is why we are always on hand to offer guidance on the many ways we can add a personal touch, just let us know what you would like and we will do our utmost to meet your requirements.” “

With over 20 years’ experience of the industry, and many years’ previous experience with John Fairest, Wayne was offered the opportunity to join Eric as

manager in 2017, “I joined John Fairest as a hearse driver in 1997 and was later promoted to funeral director. It was there that I learnt how to arrange and conduct funerals, as well as the correct way to handle and line coffins and how to prepare the deceased for the family to pay their respects. This gave me a full scope of all aspects of the job and after ten years of service I was offered the position of manager at a new branch on Abbey Lane, which I accepted.

In September 2017 I was offered the opportunity to join the team at Eric Eyre’s and to ‘move back home’, as I say, as I live local to both branches. It was, and still is, a fantastic opportunity for me to grow and develop an already friendly family run business and provide our local community with a warm and compassionate service.”

Completing the team at High Green is Sharon Clayton and Kay Cooper, while Beverley Travis and Ruth Fenlon look after the branch at Sheffield Lane Top, which opened four years ago.

“Our aim is to be there for our clients in every way that we can and make sure that their loved one is sent on their final journey exactly as they would have wanted. Your first point of contact will be the person you deal with throughout the process and whether the death has occurred at home, in a hospital or elsewhere, we will guide from the initial arrangement all the way through to directing the funeral. We even provide help following the service, should you need any further support or guidance.”

If you need help arranging a funeral for your loved one, contact Eric Eyre Funeral Service.

ERIC EYRE

Music Venue trust Closes in on £2.5M target For ‘own our Venues’ initiative

‘Own Our Venues’, the campaign launched by Music Venue Trust (MVT) to make a radical intervention into the ownership of the UK’s Grassroots Music Venues (GMVs), is nearing its £2.5m fundraise target and has set a final deadline of March 30th to secure the remaining investment needed to commence the purchase of properties.

‘Own Our Venues’ was launched as a crowdfunded project by Music Venue Trust in June 2022 and is the first step in a long-term campaign to take control of the freeholds of music venue premises and bring them under a protected status of benevolent ownership.

The ‘Own Our Venues’ concept is built on the Community Share model that has been so successful in saving and protecting local pubs, post offices and even sports grounds, and is seeking to acquire nine venues in its first phase. Further venue freeholds will then be identified and secured as and when they become available. On completion of purchase the venues will be offered an immediate rent reduction and help contribute to building repairs and insurance, while also guaranteeing long term security and market resistant rents.

Since the launch of the ‘Own Our Venues’ initiative, hundreds of individuals, companies and organisations have already pledged their support to the

project. These include high profile investors such as Ed Sheeran, Frank Turner and musicianturned-venue-owner Ben Lovett, alongside major music industry companies such as Sony Music Entertainment and Warner Music among many others. Arts Council England has also confirmed a grant of £500,000 to the project, which is not included in the crowdfunded total.

£1.8m of the target total has already been secured and MVT aims to begin purchasing its first venues in April.

Mark Davyd, CEO, MVT

“We know that changing the ownership model of Grassroots Music Venues is the single most important change we can make to this sector. The best people to Own Our Venues are the people who love them, need them and

use them. We want to see everyone who has a stake in the future of these venues become a direct financial stakeholder in that future; local communities, artists, audiences, the music industry. The success of these venues is vital to the future of live music for all of us. This isn’t a time to sit on the side lines hoping someone else will do this for us, it’s down to us to make it happen.”

Investments in the Own Our Venues initiative, which start at £100 and can go up to £100,000, can be made at www.crowdfunder. co.uk/p/own-our-venues, with a guaranteed 3% APR return on any investments. Alternatively, those who would rather make a one off donation can do so at www.crowdfunder.

MOTOR CITY MOTOR CITY

It’s the tail end of the big, bad 1980s in Hollywood, and the party has been raging hard. Aqua Net, Lycra and Heavy Metal flow freely at one of the Sunset Strip’s last legendary venues, a place where legendary rocker Stacee Jaxx takes the stage and groupies line up for their chance at an autograph. Amidst the madness, aspiring rock star (and resident toilet cleaner) Drew longs to take the stage as the next big thing (and longs for small-town girl Sherri, fresh off the bus from Kansas with stars in her eyes). But the rock ‘n’ roll fairy tale is about to end when German developers sweep into town with plans to turn the fabled Strip into just another capitalist strip mall. Can Drew, Sherri and the gang save the strip – and themselves – before it’s too late? Only the music of hit bands Styx, Journey, Bon Jovi, Whitesnake and more can hold the answer.

Brand new apply-to-play competition will offer a festival tour, studio time and a magazine feature for the winning act.

Tramlines Festival takes place from 21st - 23rd July at Hillsborough Park in Sheffield. Following the announcement of headliners Richard Ashcroft, Courteeners and Paul Heaton with Jacqui Abbot in January, the focus now shifts to local and emerging talent. The ‘apply to play’ scheme has been a fixture of the festival for many years but has been revamped for 2023. This year in addition to the opportunity to perform at Tramlines, one act will receive studio time, multiple festival performances,

a magazine feature and the chance to perform for industry professionals.

The Tramlines team and panel of experts will select a shortlist of artists from the applications to go forward to a public vote. The overall winner will be rewarded with an incredible prize; including £500 of rehearsal and recording credits at Pirate Studios, a feature interview in Exposed Magazine and a series of paid festival slots at Truck Festival (Oxfordshire), Victorious Festival (Portsmouth) and of course, Tramlines in Sheffield. Additionally, they will be invited to perform at This Feeling industry showcase event at The Social in front of music industry professionals. Runners-up will receive a paid

slot at Tramlines and £100 credit for Pirate Studios. Full details on how to apply can be found on the Tramlines website - https://bit.ly/ TL23ApplyToPlay

Local and emerging talent already feature heavily in the 2023 line-up. Sheffield’s finest, Reverend and The Makers and The Everly Pregnant Brothers are firm festival favourites and return this year. Acts such as Stone, The Mary Wallopers, Primaqueen, Jetski, Franz Von, Amaroun, Deadletter, Lizzie Esau, Rumbi Tauro and Deuxe also represent new and local music. Rumbi

Tauro is returning for the 3rd time and was first selected through the apply-to-play scheme back in 2021. Her career has flourished since and she’s now climbing

LiVe eVentS at the ParaMount

the billing at Tramlines. Rumbi also won the Pattern + Push competition in 2021. Pattern + Push who specialise in mentoring aspiring rappers, lyricists and singers will be returning in 2023 to programme the Saturday lineup on the Library Stage with local acts Coco, Deuxe, JxK, DJ Lamour and more to be announced soon!

Operations Director Timm Cleasby said, “Local music and new acts have always been a key feature of the festival. It’s always such a privilege to feature acts who then go on to achieve great things and we must continue to use the platform the Tramlines provides to support and nourish local music. I am excited to see which acts blow us away this year.”

Only a handful of Weekend tickets are left for Tramlines 2023, with over 97% sold already. They are on sale now, priced at £140 (+ booking fee) with day tickets from only £60 (+ booking fee). To buy tickets and for more info, people should visit www. tramlines.org.uk

Over five stages of music, comedy and performance, a family-friendly area packed with

quirky things to do, the best festival food around, bespoke craft beer and ale, vintage clothes stores, and roaming entertainment, there’s a lot to love about Tramlines. The 2022 festival was a sell-out so the advice is to be super quick for this last batch of Weekend tickets.

Tickets and more information available at tramlines.org.uk

The Smash Hit Comedy from the writes of “That’s the Spirt”, Lee Pollard AND Paul Athorne

The funny old game just got even funnier!

AWAY DAYS 1 - The loyal supporters of Holgate County F.C club are ready to set off for their first away game of the season. After three consecutive relegations and nine managers in five years, the dizzy heights of the 1974 Mackeson trophy semi-finals now seem a long way away. However, with new club secretary Russell at the helm and millionaire chairman Jim on board, things certainly seem to be on the upturn. That is until the late arrival of local football hooligan Vince, a man with an IQ lower than his waist size and the news that the bus is being diverted to collect a most unwelcome passenger.

AWAY DAYS 2 - Rejoin the gang as they take an all-expenses paid trip to Amsterdam, where they encounter MMA fighters, bogus priests, ‘special’ cakes, dodgy pilots, drag queens and a host of never to be forgotten characters. What could possibly go wrong! Join them for a night of uplifting comedy you will never forget.

BLADES DROP POINTS ON THE ROAD

An early goal by defender Harry Pickering saw United slip to a narrow loss in Lancashire last Saturday lunchtime.

United made just one enforced change for the trip to Ewood Park, with Basham replacing the suspended Ahmedhodžić. Baldock and Clark returned amongst the substitutes. The Blades started positively but were undone by a swift counter in just the fifth minute.

Thomas broke out and freed Szmodics, he fed Dolan who in turn teed up PICKERING, with the left-back firing the ball into the net on the angle giving Foderingham no chance. Looking for an instant response, Ndiaye and Lowe worked an opening for Berge but his effort was gathered by Pears, before Bogle’s low cross was fortunately claimed following a couple of lucky rebounds.

Despite the concession of an early goal, it was United who remained largely on the front foot and from their first corner on 20 minutes, Robinson rose unmarked, but he header

Walking Football can boost your mental health!

Since retiring, Peter had struggled with his mental health. He was feeling low, getting easily out of breath and hadn’t kicked a football in almost 30 years.

That’s when he heard about the Sheffield Wednesday Community Programme’s Walking Football project that runs five times a week.

The sessions not

with the aid of off RankinCostello was parried away and subsequently cleared. A long throw by Robinson then fell kindly for Fleck but Travis managed to block his shot that appeared to be on target. Basham rolled back the years, beating three defenders having embarked on a trademark run, but he couldn’t apply the finishing touch.

In a rare attack, Blackburn threatened a second, Thomas got to the byline and the ball back for Dolan, he unleashed a powerful strike which had Foderingham beaten, but thankfully it bounced favourable off the woodwork. But the visitors continued to look the better side, as McBurnie headed wide from Fleck’s cross after Norwood had switched play to pick out Lowe. The first half ended with United forcing a couple of late corners, but it was Blackburn on the break that threatened, initially through Gallagher, before Dolan dragged an effort wide from a Thomas cross.

Basham was cautioned in

“The social aspect is just as good as the physical, I’ve never felt so great and couldn’t recommend it more!” said Peter.

Sessions are just £2 per person and run on the following days:

the opening minutes of the second period, having caught the lively Dolan. The home side then forced a couple of consecutive corners, prior to Buckley blazing over from the edge of the area after United failed to clear their lines.

Gallagher then broke the offside trap down the right channel, but Szmodics saw his moment snuffed out, before the same player struck the cross with a chipped effort.

United’s first changes came on 62 minutes as Baldock and McAtee replaced Bogle and Fleck, moments later, Osborn took the place of Lowe, as Norwood entered referee Smith’s booked for a foul on the advancing Dolan. Tempers were starting to boil over after most tackles, this time Szmodics seeing yellow for

a cynical pull on McAtee. McBurnie couldn’t generate enough power when trying to redirect Robinson’s attempt on goal, before Egan headed over at the back post from Norwood’s corner, as United’s final two changes saw Sharp and Doyle thrown into the action. Time was starting to run out and Egan took one for the team, hauling down Brereton-Diaz as he looked to run into space in behind. There was a brief stoppage for an emergency in the crowd as fifth minutes of added time were signalled by the fourth official. United threw everything at the hosts, with Berge seeing a shot deflected wide and Doyle having a free kick headed behind, but the Blades couldn’t find that elusive leveller.

As the Owls extended the run of resistance to 21 league games, with 20 clean sheets to boot, Darren Moore pointed to one particular incident that encapsulated the spirit of the squad. Minutes after Jaden Brown scored the only goal of the game, the defender raced back to deny Peterborough a leveller, pinching the ball from the toe of Kwame Poku with the striker bearing down on Cameron Dawson.

The passion of Aden Flint as he acknowledged Brown’s key intervention was not lost on the gaffer, who told swfc.co.uk: “You only have to look at that reaction of Aden Flint

Rotherham United boss

Matt Taylor praised his side for their attacking intent in front of their own supporters as they saw off the challenge of Queens Park Rangers with a 3-1 win.

The Millers made the early running as Jordan Hugill scored the opener - which marked his first in his new side’s colours - before he followed it up with a second half penalty to

to see what the clean sheet means to the players.

“As a former defender myself, I know that feeling, you give everything to protect your goal and fair play to Aden, because he showed what it means for everyone to see.

“Jaden did ever so well to not only get back but just get his foot in at that crucial point to spoil the chance.

“And fair play to Baz as well, the way he sprinted back near the end to stop an attack on the edge of the box was wonderful to see.

“It’s infectious and it’s felt by the whole team, they are giving everything they have got.”

Moore was full of praise

make it 2-0. The R’s got themselves back into the contest with a second half penalty but the game was put to bed by Hakeem Odoffin, who fired home late on to make sure of the points.

Here’s what Matt Taylor said after the game:

“I’ve been saying it for a little while, I feel we’ve been moving in the right direction.

“We certainly feel

for matchwinner Brown, who went one better than last weekend’s assist at Charlton having been drafted back into the team at The Valley.

He added: “I’m really pleased for Jaden, he’s come back into the frame, he got the assist at Charlton and he’s got the winning

goal today.

“It’s taken a little nick but Jaden is claiming it and rightly so, I’d be doing the same, it looked like it was going in anyway.

“He’s had a real influence at both ends of the pitch today, it’s another win and we move on to next week at Portsmouth.”

YOU ONLY HAVE TO LOOK AT THE REACTION THIS TEAm SEEmS TO BE GROWING - TAYLOR

relatively good about ourselves. [It was a] hell of a battle, QPR have got a manager who knows how to get the best out of players and is highly motivating.

“I thought we stood up to the majority of [their play]. A couple of moments of quality for our goals got us ahead.

“I want this team to keep being aggressive, hence why we put Conor and

Georgie out there. “This club isn’t a club that sits back. We’re in Yorkshire, we’re in the North of England, we roll our sleeves up and we face everything we can head on.

COLLECTIVE EFFORT PLEASES SCHOFIELD

Danny Schofield praised the collective effort of his side as they emerged from the clash with Stockport County with a solid point. The game ended goalless with the defensive organisation of both sides winning out on the day in a competitive affair.

Schofield on how the game played out: “I said to the players that it was a hard-earned point. I think we showed a lot of fighting spirit. Defensively we were very good collectively to deny the spaces and we defended the box really well with the first and second contacts.

“I think we deserved a point.

“I’ve been really pleased with the lads’ defensive organisation and understanding when to press high or defend a bit deep and squeeze up from those positions. Also how we defend the box, the positions we take up. I feel we defended solidly.

“I was really frustrated because I felt we started the last few games really

well and on the front foot, being physical and winning the duels. But the first five or six minutes of this one, we didn’t do that and we invited pressure onto us.

“We soon worked that out and I felt we were much more comfortable after the first ten minutes.”

On areas for improvement from the performance:

“it’s hard sometimes when you’re working so hard without the ball to then transition into attacking play. I felt we had some good moments - Harrison Biggins had a really good chance from good attacking play.

“At places like Stockport, I don’t know the stats but teams will come and not create many chances against this team.

“We need to take those big chances. It’s always that - defensively, how organised can we be, how aggressive can we be and when the moments come to attack, how much quality can we show to try to get the end product?”

On the importance of the result:

“We’ve had some really good away performances - Grimsby, Newport, Swindon where we won. Leyton Orient, we didn’t get the result but the performance was very good. We know we can come away from home and perform. We knew it was going to be very difficult. They’re a good team with really good players and a good coaching staff that have them very well organised. To come away, put on a performance like that and come away with a point, I think it’s positive going into the next two games.”

On the midfield discipline:

“Both Harrison Biggins and Charlie Lakin did that and so has Ben Close when he played. It was a difficult decision to leave him and George Miller out. But I thought Caolan Lavery, Harrison Biggins and Charlie Lakin the middle were outstanding. It’s a collective effortthere’s games coming up where players will play that were on the bench

“I can hear a bit of noise in that changing room after the game, which is always a positive. I’m delighted because that team seems to be growing.” today.

“I thought there were some really good individual performances today but collectively we were very good.”

On George Miller being named as a substitute:

“I know he’s not scoring at the moment but he will. And I think what he’s been doing for the team sometimes goes unnoticed - the positions he takes up to trigger the press because he’s our starting point for pressing, He’s been doing that really well and he’s been moving in behind really well.

“Caolan [Lavery] has been champing at the bit so he got the opportunity in this one and I thought he did really well.”

On Jonathan Mitchell’s performance:

“I thought he made two outstanding saves and coming to a place like Stockport, we knew we’d need our goalkeeper at some point and he stepped up to the plate. He was outstanding.”
