reGion’s mayor convenes transport summit

South Yorkshire and regions like it were promised a ‘London-style transport network’ by 2030. That’s just over 350 weeks away.

But with bus cuts looming, and cancelled trains making commuting miserable for thousands across the North, many places feel further away from that than they ever were.

South Yorkshire’s Mayor Oliver Coppard is convening a Transport Summit, to build the vision for the future of the region’s public transport.

A transport network which serves South Yorkshire’s needs is key to a betterconnected, more sustainable

and healthier region.

South Yorkshire’s Mayor Oliver Coppard said: “Fixing South Yorkshire’s public transport system is critical for our region to thrive.

If we want to grow our economy, get healthier and create great places to live, a smarter, greener, faster public transport system is vital. That’s why I want to bring together experts in the field to help us fix our broken public transport system.

“If the Government aren’t going to do it, we need to take matters into our own hands and figure out what a ‘London-style transport network’ that works for

South Yorkshire looks like.

That’s what this summit will help us do.”

South Yorkshire’s Active Travel Commissioner Ed Clancy said: ‘Since becoming South Yorkshire’s Active Travel Commissioner, I’ve met with people who want to walk and cycle more, but don’t feel like they can. Mostly that’s because people say they don’t feel able to walk or cycle, or that they don’t feel safe enough to do so on our current infrastructure.

“Ultimately, we want people to be happier, healthier and get to where they need to be easier.

“I believe walking and

cycling is an important part of that and it must work in harmony with our plans for buses, trams and trains. I’m really looking forward to this summit and to figure out how we make some vital changes to build a better future for our region.” The summit will bring together leading experts and will hear from a series of

speakers with national and international experience to share best practice, discuss ideas and find solutions to fix the broken public transport network.

The South Yorkshire Transport Summit will take place this Wednesday at the National College of Advanced Transport & Infrastructure in Doncaster.

Sheffield road closures plan in bid to focus on pedestrians and cyclists

Roads in parts of Sheffield could be closed to cars to make the area more cyclist and pedestrian friendly, the city's council has said.

Under the plans, the road layout at Neepsend, Kelham and the area around West Bar would be changed.

Road closures, one-way streets and banned turns are among the proposals.

started out in 2000, in a tiny store on Attercliffe Road, across the road from the Banners building, selling a range of items from TVs to exercise equipment, toys to pots and pans. The shop was an immediate success and within a couple of years gave to bigger premises in the old Co-Op building on The Moor behind Redgates. The business traded here happily and successfully for several years until the council decided the building was required for other purposes.

After 23 years of trading Furniture Clearance Warehouse is closing its doors. The owner, David Perkins has successfully run the business for over two decades, but is now ready for a change.

times bigger than the original store and focusses solely on selling furniture. This also saw the business change names to Furniture Clearance Warehouse. Although all these years later, customers still refer to them as SWAG.

But business owner Matthew Windle said he feared the planned changes would "kill trade" for firms after the recent launch of the city's clean air zone.

Sheffield City Council introduced its clean air zone on Monday, with drivers of taxis, vans, buses and coaches which do not meet strict emissions standards now being charged to enter the city

centre. If the new proposals for road layout changes go ahead, further footpaths and new cycle lanes would be created and a pedestrian crossing installed at the junction of Neepsend Lane and Rutland Road. Meanwhile, work at West Bar would include a new roundabout prioritising pedestrians and cyclists, as well as cycle lanes on West Bar and Tenter Street and an upgraded ring road crossing, the council said.

Councillor Mazher Iqbal, committee chair for transport, regeneration and climate change, said: "Making it easier to walk and cycle is especially important in development areas where journeys are likely to be shorter.

However, some business owners have objected to the plans.

Mr Windle, who runs P&W Services on Neepsend Lane, said the changes would mean lorries delivering to sites in the area would not be able to avoid going through the new clean air zonemeaning an increase in delivery costs. He said the plans would also mean his car repair business, which was established by his father nearly 60 years ago, would no longer get any passing trade after the road layout changes. "One of the worst things for us is that we have lots of older customers who have been with

"[The changes] are going to kill our trade, simple as that, and they are going to make it very hard for a lot of other companies."

The council has already applied for traffic orders to prioritise buses on Burton Road and Neepsend Lane, reduce traffic slow through Kelham, Neepsend and streets around West Bar, to put a 20mph (32km/h) speed limit on some streets in Neepsend and Kelham and to increase the speed limit on Harvest Lane, Hicks Street and Platt Street from 20mph to 30mph (48km/h).

EVERYBODY SAY JLS AS THEY RETURN WITH NEW TOUR

JLs’s 2021 comeback tour proved to be one of the hottest tickets for years, with phenomenal public demand seeing the reunited quartet having to extend their initial 16 show schedule to a 29-date tour of arenas across the UK and Ireland. It was an experience of a lifetime for the boys and their fans alike as JLS performed to a total of more than 350,000 people - including four sold-out shows at The O2 in London. And when something is so good, who can resist doing it again? The JLS heart will beat again as they’ve announced

details of a huge UK and Ireland tour, the ‘EVERYBODY SAY JLS: The Hits Tour’. Utilita Arena Sheffield on 11 November 2023 will host the finale of the tour, bringing the highly anticipated show to a close.

JLS commented, “We couldn’t be more excited to announce another UK and Ireland arena tour! Last time out was totally surreal and we’ve been eagerly awaiting the right time to do it all over again. Playing live and seeing our amazing fans is definitely the best part of being JLS!”

Oritsé Williams, will bring their catalogue of unforgettable hits, stellar vocal talent, eye-catching choreography and sheer charisma to the following venues: Tickets will go on general sale from 9am on Friday, March 3rd via www. utilitaarenasheffield. co.uk/. In the meantime, JLS will be generating excitement for the tour with a selection of high profile TV and radio moments in the coming days, which will be completed with a chat on ‘Sunday Brunch’. JLS broke through in 2009 in the biggest way imaginable as the instant pop classic ‘Beat

Again’ shot straight to #1 - their first of five UK chart-topping smashes which continued with ‘Everybody In Love’, ‘The Club Is Alive’, ‘Love You More’ and ‘She Makes Me Wanna’. With another five Top 10 hits to their credit, JLS also impacted the album charts with their self-titled #1 debut and three more Top 3 records before saying goodbye with their 2013 ‘Greatest Hits’ album. Throughout, they were heralded with numerous major awards, notably two BRIT Awards and five MOBO Awards. But thankfully not all goodbyes are forever. While each member continued their own

successful careers outside of JLS, they remained best of friends and shared a nagging feeling that they had unfinished business to address.

In February 2020 they announced details of their ‘Beat Again’ reunion tour, which was quickly extended and then completed in November

I’ve just accidentally sent a naked photo of myself to everyone in my address book! Not only is it embarrassing, it’s cost me a fortune in stamps!

2021 after the world reopened post-lockdown. They also returned to the charts when their album ‘2.0’ debuted at #4, with the songs ‘Eternal Love’ and ‘Day One’ becoming new fan favourites as the tour progressed.

Now the JLS heart will beat yet again.

From Monday 27 February, Sheffield’s Clean Air Zone (CAZ) has officially started.

The CAZ is a Class C charging zone, which means that some vehicles driving within, or entering Sheffield’s inner ring road and city centre, that do not meet vehicle emission limits set by the Government, will be charged. To learn more about the CAZ please visit the clean air website.

Who will be charged?

Only the most heavily polluting vehicles will be charged for entering Sheffield’s CAZ. Private vehicles, motorcycles and lowerpolluting vehicles will not have to pay.

Vehicles that will be charged include:

• Heavy goods vehicles (HGV)

• Light goods vehicles (LGV)

• Vans

• Buses

• Coaches

• Taxis

How do I check if my vehicle will be charged?

You need to check whether your vehicle will be charged, using the Government vehicle checker.

If the vehicle you own is compliant, then you do not need to do anything.

If your vehicle is not compliant, and you drive into, out of, or within the zone, then you need to pay each day you travel. Some motorhomes and campervans may be classified as a LGV or HGV, please check your vehicle.

How much will I need to pay?

Charges are:

• £50 per day for larger vehicles – such as buses,

coaches and HGVs

• £10 per day for smaller vehicles – such as taxis and LGVs

• Larger campervans / motorhomes can apply for a discounted rate, reducing the charge amount to £10

How do I pay?

If you’re entering the zone you can pay up to 6 days in advance, on the day, or up to 6 days after your journey. For information and a simple and secure way to pay, head to the Government Clean Air Zone page.

Available financial support

Financial support to upgrade or replace a vehicle to meet CAZ standards is still available for vehicle owners based in Sheffield and Rotherham.

Apply for an exemption

Local exemptions and discounts are still available, see the exemptions page for information on how to apply.

If you or your business is based in Sheffield or Rotherham and runs an LGV, then you can apply now for a temporary exemption, which will expire at 00:00 on Monday 5 June 2023.

If you do not have an exemption you will need to pay the daily charge. An automatic, temporary exemption will be applied for Hackney Carriage vehicles licensed by us, up to 00:00 on Monday 5 June 2023.

You do not need to apply for an exemption if your vehicle is one of the following:

• Nationally exempt

• Meets required emission standards

• A private car or

motorbike

How does the CAZ work?

Automatic number plate recognition cameras (ANPR) capture the number plates of vehicles driving into the zone. This data is then crossreferenced against DVLA’s database.

If you are driving a non-compliant vehicle, and you do not pay the charge within the timeframe set out, you will receive a Penalty Charge Notice in the post.

Why does Sheffield need a CAZ?

Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs’ (DEFRA) latest assessments show that Sheffield is not compliant with the annual limit for nitrogen

dioxide (NO2). That’s why we urgently need to reduce NO2 levels around the city. Our CAZ will take us a step closer to cleaner air and higher standard of health for local people, especially those most vulnerable to pollution related health issues, such as the elderly, unborn babies and young children. Air pollution contributes to around 1 in 20 of deaths in Sheffield each year.

The city’s Clean Air Zone is part of a national Clean Air Strategy funded by DEFRA, to tackle air pollution, including roadside nitrogen dioxide concentrations. To learn more about the CAZ please visit the clean air site.

Grants of up to £50,000 are available to businesses in Sheffield to transform under-used spaces on Fargate. The second round of funding, part of the ReNew Project, will support local businesses and organisations to revive empty shops and bring vibrancy to areas of the city centre that have struggled in recent years. The funding is available for prime locations on Fargate. Businesses from a wide range of customer facing industries are encouraged to apply, including food and beverage, retail, leisure, hospitality and arts and culture.

Fargate is at the centre of the Council’s plans to reimagine the city centre and will soon be

home to Event Central, a year-round events and exhibition space, as well as transformational street renovations, including new pocket parks, seating areas and lighting. The improvements and ReNew grants are funded by the £15.8m Future High Streets Fund which the Council successfully bid for in 2021. As a result of the first round of ReNew project grants, Juno Books launched their brand new book shop on Chapel Walk. They used the funding to renovate the property ready for opening with new flooring, bespoke hand painted signage as well as creating a wheelchair access counter and securing the shop with internal shutters.

Mayor Ros Jones has launched her draft budget proposals for 2023/24 alongside the publishing of the council’s draft Corporate Plan. The documents outline how the council plans to deliver services over the coming year, support local people and businesses through the cost of living challenges and achieve Doncaster’s ambitions as a new city. The proposals seek to protect the city’s most vulnerable, support continued investment in the city and provide resources to boost opportunities for all. This budget provides sufficient resources to enable front line services to continue to deliver at their current service levels despite less funding in real terms, increased service pressures and rising inflation. It also includes £7.5m additional targeted funding for Adult Social Care. In light of the pressures and future risks, a Council Tax increase of 1.99% is being proposed alongside a further 2% increase through the Government’s Adult Social Care precept

(3.99% in total). The council has chosen not to increase by the maximum 5% allowable, whilst the additional funding generated is much needed, this has to be balanced against the impact on our residents facing the current cost of living challenges. To offset the impact of this and to help support those residents who are struggling, the Local Council Tax Reduction scheme (LCTS) remains in place. In addition, the Council Tax Support Fund grant of £0.6m will be used to provide a £25 reduction to the council tax liabilities of working age and pension age council tax payers who are in receipt of benefits. Doncaster will continue to have the lowest council tax in South Yorkshire. The Corporate Plan 2023/2024 sets out the council’s priorities and how they contribute to the long term partnership strategy, Doncaster Delivering Together as we embark on a new era as a city. Mayor Ros Jones said: “As the cost of living crisis continues, our

key priority is to support the people of Doncaster through these difficult times and reduce the impact of increasing costs on daily life wherever we can. Of course, as a local authority we too are not immune from the challenges of the current economic climate. While operating in a volatile and uncertain environment, with no certainty from government about funding beyond the next year, it is hard to plan ahead. We are a financially well managed council and I will do whatever I can to continue to lessen the impacts of uncertainty and focus on supporting Doncaster’s priorities outlined in the Corporate

Councillor Mazher

Iqbal, Co-Chair of the Transport, Regeneration and Climate Policy Committee, said: “We recognise the need and desire to reinstate Fargate as a vibrant and social part of the city centre and the ReNew project is one of the many ways we hope to achieve this. With so many exciting businesses in the city, some just starting out and others keen to expand, it is critical we work with them to inject new life into the areaencouraging them to be creative in their plans

and use this opportunity to try something new, expand or move to a central location. We are looking for projects that will have a longlasting positive impact on the city centre and will benefit from the regeneration taking place.”

Those interested in applying must complete an expression of interest form. These must be sent to citycentre. management@sheffield. gov.uk by midnight on 5 March 2023.

In addition to their performance, The Signatures will be collaborating with Amy Hodkins,

a talented dancer who has amassed a huge following on TikTok for her Northern Soul moves. Amy will be joining the band on stage for a special performance that is sure to get everyone on their feet and dancing.

But that's not all - Amy Hodkins will also be opening a youth club in the area, The Younghearts Soul Club at the Lowedges community centre, providing a safe and inclusive space for young people to come together, learn new skills, and explore their passions. The club will focus on promoting the culture and history of Northern Soul, and will be a valuable resource for the local community.

Don't miss out on this unforgettable night of Northern Soul music and dance!

It’s the tail end of the big, bad 1980s in Hollywood, and the party has been raging hard. Aqua Net, Lycra and Heavy Metal flow freely at one of the Sunset Strip’s last legendary venues, a place where legendary rocker Stacee Jaxx takes the stage and groupies line up for their chance at an autograph. Amidst the madness, aspiring rock star (and resident toilet cleaner) Drew longs to take the stage as the next big thing (and longs for small-town girl Sherri, fresh off the bus from Kansas with stars in her eyes). But the rock ‘n’ roll fairy tale is about to end when German developers sweep into town with plans to turn the fabled Strip into just another capitalist strip mall. Can Drew, Sherri and the gang save the strip – and themselves – before it’s too late? Only the music of hit bands Styx, Journey, Bon Jovi, Whitesnake and more can hold the answer.

THE CIRCUS ROCK N ROLLS IN TO TOWN LED BY NOEL GALLAGHER

UK music icon Noel Gallagher and his High-Flying Birds will head to South Yorkshire this September to perform a major concert at Don Valley Bowl.

Kickstarting with Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds on Friday 1st September Rock N Roll Circus will host a weekend series of concerts that will be staged in a huge bespoke Big Top structure specially built for this three-day series of live music.

Joining Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds on the line-up will be Happy Mondays, The Cribs, The Joy Formidable and Somebody’s Child.

With a new album ‘Council Skies’ set for release on 2nd June, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Bird’s appearance in Sheffield is the conclusion of an extended run of summer concerts in the UK for the legendary star.

The forthcoming album features the recently released ‘Pretty Boy’ and the current single ‘Easy Now’. Having had Noel headline the inaugural Rock N Roll Circus in Newcastle last summer, the event organisers are looking forward to bringing the touring circus concept to music fans in Yorkshire.

Alongside the fantastic music, Rock N Roll Circus will feature fire performers, aerialists, contortionists, stilt walkers and acrobats, bringing a whole new dimension to the traditional concert experience.

Speaking ahead of this week’s announcement, a spokesperson for Rock N Roll Circus said:

“We’re proud to be bringing our event to South Yorkshire.

Sheffield has such a strong tradition for Live music, we’re delighted to be able to host our

touring concept there.

“Noel is a living legend, his live shows are always amazing, featuring songs across his 30 year career. The first tracks to be heard from his new album ‘Council Skies’ are great with the album to be released before he arrives in Sheffield. Stay tuned for more major artist announcements.”

Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds first emerged in 2011 with their eponymous album released in October that year. The album went double platinum in the UK and has sold over 2.5 million copies worldwide.

In the two decades prior to this release, Noel Gallagher was main songwriter, lead guitarist and occasional lead vocalist of Oasis, one of the biggest and most loved bands ever to emerge from the UK.

His band played a tremendous

LiVe eVentS at the ParaMount

role in shaping and inspiring contemporary guitar music from the 90’s onwards. Noel’s continued success with the High Flying Birds cements his position as one of the most gifted, successful and enduring songwriters to come out of the British music scene in the last 50 years.

Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds played Glastonbury’s Pyramid stage in June 2022, delivering a career-spanning set to one of the weekend’s biggest crowds, and the band look forward to performing their chart-topping hits in Sheffield this September.

Happy Mondays need little introduction. The ‘Madchester’ band from Salford were one of the most popular forces of alternative music in the late 80s, early 90s, and one of the flagship

bands of Factory Records. They are considered one of the true originals from the early indie scene, and will be performing all of their classics at Rock N Roll Circus.

Meanwhile Wakefield’s finest The Cribs - led by the Ryan Garman and his two brothers - will be bringing their spiky lo-fi indie rock to the Rock N Roll Circus party this September after music fans hear performances from Welsh alternative rockers The Joy Formidable and one of Ireland’s most spellbinding breakthrough vocalists of the year so far, Somebody’s Child, AKA Cian Godfrey.

Sheffield Councillor added:

“Councillor Martin Smith, Chair of the Economic Development and Skills Committee said:

“This is an incredibly exciting event which combines the best

artists of the UK music scene with the top circus performers, it will be an immersive experience you won’t want to miss.

“Sheffield’s reputation as the music city is growing, and this event is a fantastic new element to the city’s varied major events calendar, featuring the best of music, sport, outdoors and entertainment. I’m so excited for the year ahead.”

Tickets for Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds at Rock N Roll Circus will go on pre-sale this Wednesday 1st March at 10 am and they will then be available for general sale to the public on Friday 3rd March at 10 am. For more information about the event and to buy tickets head to:

Friends since they were neighbours in the sixties Dave Kelly & Bob Hall have had illustrious careers in the British Blues Scene and have won many awards for their artistry. Dave Kelly, singer, guitarist and songwriter, is a founder member of The Blues Band (which has recently celebrated its 40th anniversary). Dave cut his teeth in the backing bands of Howlin’ Wolf and John Lee Hooker, and has played with Buddy Guy, Son House & Muddy Waters. The Blues Band have released around twenty albums, and Dave has fifteen more either solo or with his own Dave Kelly Band Bob Hall, singer, pianist and songwriter, is a founder member of The Groundhogs and Savoy Brown.

Bob has also accompanied Howlin’ Wolf and John Lee Hooker and a host of blues stars including Little Walter, Lightnin’ Slim and Homesick James. Bob has played on well over a hundred albums, including four solo piano albums and dozens more as band leader or co-leader. Down the years Dave and Bob have had a number of critically acclaimed joint projects, have played in each other’s bands and on each other’s records. With such a pedigree it seemed natural to get together a show to exploit their joint talents. Complimenting the duo is Hilary Blythe on bass, an emotive singer of classic blues and Bob’s partner off-stage. Hilary’s rock-solid bass has been part of the A-Team, accompanying Lil’ Jimmy Reed on his UK and international tours.

BLADES RETURN TO WINNING WAYS

United returned to winning ways with a hard-fought but deserved success against playoff chasing Watford at Bramall Lane on Saturday afternoon.

The decisive moment came in the 73rd minute as Oli McBurnie’s back post header in front of the Kop was deflected into his own net by the unfortunate Ryan Porteous and coupled with some excellent defending at the death United saw the game out for what could be a crucial three points.

Boss Heckingbottom made three changes for the clash against the Hornets, with Fleck making his first start since November.

Ahmedhodžić and Ndiaye were called, as skipper Sharp returned to the matchday 18.

The opening ten minutes saw both teams look dangerous in an attacking sense. Bogle was snuffed out at one end, after Ndiaye freed Berge, with Hodet later booked for his foul in build-up. But at the other end, Davis got in behind the Blades defence, but under pressure from

You have to wait for your chance

Jaden Brown reflected on a memorable afternoon in the capital and was pleased with his shift as the Owls posted three points against Charlton to stay at the summit of League One. Brown made his first league appearance for four months and emerged with credit, claiming an assist for Liam Palmer’s winner and turning in a solid performance in the left

Lowe he missed his kick and Foderingham gathered. Ndiaye was proving a real handful and was denied from McBurnie’s flick on, only for the assiatnt referee to raise a late flag. Ahmedhodžić was cautioned for a shirt pull on Joao Pedro and from the resulting free-kick Davis should have scored with a glancing header. The frenetic pace carried on until the break, as Lowe entered the book, before Foderingham was brave to claim a Louza free-kick under heavy pressure Hodet.

United ended the half on top though forcing successive corners, from which Egan saw a header block, before Choudhury headed behind after Egan had recycled the ball to maintain a promising attack from Fleck’s initial delivery.

The Blades registered their first shot on target from Norwood’s free-kick after Porteous had been booked for a foul on McBurnie, at the other end Ahmedhodžić was alert to the danger to prevent Sarr getting a shot away

wing-back berth. Delighted to having made his mark, the 24-yearold said: “I’m buzzing for myself and the boys and the fans because Charlton away is a tough game.

“I was ready because no matter when you get the call, you have to be ready, I can’t have any excuses.

“I’m a footballer and I want to play. But when the team is doing well and winning matches you have to wait for your chance. I have waited for my chance and I like to think that I took it.”

Darren Moore was equally pleased for Brown, who was drafted into the team with Marvin Johnson

RECORD BREAKING OWLS GO TOP

from Joao Pedro’s pass. Ahmedhodžić then nearly popped up at the other end, curling an effort wide from Fleck’s ball having started the attack inside his own half.

The hour mark saw Osborn and Doyle introduced and moments later Bogle had the ball in the back of the net from Ahmedhodžić’s volley across goal, but the assistant referee raised his flag to curtain the celebrations. But less than 10 minutes later, after Berge had been denied by Bachmann, United did hit

the front as McBurnie was left unmarked at the back post from a corner, his header caused panic in the six-yard box and Porteous was unfortunate to see the ball go over the line off his legs.

Watford through everything at United as the clocked ticked down, including well into five minutes of added time, but the Blades were to be broken down despite two or three nervy moments in their own penalty area at the death to add another home win to the tally.

Darren Moore hailed a record-breaking afternoon at The Valley as the Owls beat the Addicks 1-0 to achieve a run of 20 games unbeaten in League One. Liam Palmer’s early goal was enough to break the 62-year-old record and the Wednesday boss was happy with how his players applied themselves in the capital.

Moore said: “I thought we started the game really quickly, we knew we had to do that here at The Valley because we knew the home crowd would be behind them.

“I thought the boys did really well and it was an excellent goal. The only thing about today was that

we could have scored more goals with the chances we created.

“But on the flip side I thought the concentration levels off the ball were exceptional and that’s earned us another clean sheet and three points.

“I said to them at half time that they could have been three goals to the good, so it’s about resetting and applying ourselves in the right manner.”

Harry Catterick’s Owls side of 1960/61 held the previous club record of 19 league games unbeaten, and Moore noted the achievement whilst remaining focused on future challenges. He added: “We’re really

pleased with the record.

“It seems a long time when you go back to the start of the 20-game run, but we’ve just focused on applying ourselves game by game, one at a time. We have this record but we’ll put it to one side and keep going.

“We don’t look at anybody else, we focus on us as a

group and as long as we’re being competitive and showing our level best then we can’t argue with anything.

“The players know what is required, they know the hard work they have to put in and we know there are more hurdles ahead of us and we’ll approach them together.”

DECISION MAKING COSTS ROVERS

Danny Schofield felt decision-making cost his Rovers side in the narrow defeat to fellow top seven chasers Bradford City. After a promising start to the second half, Rovers saw the game begin to slip away from them before Andy Cook netted the only goal of the game for the visitors.

suspended and Reece James feeling soreness after his recent comeback.

The gaffer explained: “I’m really pleased for Jaden. He came in and I thought for 60/65 minutes he did really well.

“What we have to remember is that he played in midweek for the Under21s so you can understand him cramping up a little so the time was right for the change.

“Reece had a soreness around his ankle. We think

another three or four days of resting up will sort it. I just didn’t want to risk him so pulled him out really late as he said the soreness wouldn’t go, so I didn’t want to add to that.

“I’ve said all along that every single player has to be ready because you will all have a part to play and we’ve seen that with Jaden, he came in, he got the assist, he played well and he can be really pleased with his part in the win.”

And head coach Schofield felt Rovers did not make the right choices at key moments in order to wrestle control of the game.

Schofield on how the game played out: “It’s obviously a disappointing result. I felt for 60 minutes that the game was in the balance, up until the goal and then there was a big momentum shift. We found it difficult then to get back into the game and create any more chances.

“The first half and at the

start of the second half, I thought we were good value.

“I think we started the second half the stronger but then some decisionmaking and poor choices of passing resulted in them being more on the front foot. To concede from a set play was disappointing.”

On the manner of the goal conceded:

“We work a lot on set plays, collectively and as a staff so to concede from that set play was disappointing. It was a good ball and a good contact from their top goalscorer who has 20 goals for the season. We knew it was going to be a threat

“Mitch [Jonathan Mitchell] has come out and made the decision to try to catch the ball. I’ve not seen it back at this stage but he could potentially have

Joel Piroe put the Swans ahead at the interval but Ogbene – a threat all evening – levelled matters in the Sky TV clash.

Speaking afterwards, Taylor was proud of his side’s efforts in South Wales, especially after falling behind, and the Millers boss was quick to praise the impact of Ogbene, who notched his eighth goal of the season in all competitions.

made the decision to punch the ball. I’m not too sure and we’ll discuss that with him. These moments happen.”

On the struggle to get back into the game:

“I think goals do change games. It’s an old adage. We tried to make some positive changes, starting just before the goal because I felt we were in the ascendancy. I felt like bringing Luke Molyneux on would add more attacking impetus to the game but we conceded straight after the substitution.

“Then we tried to be a bit more positive in going with a line of four and putting Caolan Lavery up with George Miller but I don’t think it affected the game in attack for us.

“In terms of creating chances and goalscoring opportunities, it was probably the lowest since

the second half. I felt the game was a little bit soft from both teams in the first half and a couple of soft moments turned into errors. We let them in with that goal and it gave them a boost.

“In the second half. It was important we got the goal and we could have and possibly should have got the three points.

I’ve been at the club. I think we had one big chance at 0-0 with the cutback to Kyle Hurst and that’s the only really good opportunity I can recall.”

On George Miller’s form in front of goal:

“We work intensely with all the players to help them try to improve their games and instil confidence with them. I’m sure it is playing on George’s mind - like any striker who doesn’t score goals, it will play on his mind.

“But he does so much for the team, as I’ve said before. How we press, how we want him to work, how he competes with physical centre backs. He adds a lot of value.

“It will be something he’s conscious of and it’s something we want him to improve on and we’ll work on that.”

“It was a strange looking goal as Shane (Ferguson) slipped when he delivered the ball while Chieo (Ogbene) put the ball in despite being on the floor.

Millers boss Matt Taylor was full of praise for the battling qualities of his side as Chiedozie Ogbene’s second-half strike ensured their share of spoils following a hard-working display by Swansea City.

“It could have been three points but I’m pleased we equalised and pleased we got back into the game because we have not done that enough this season.

“I’m pleased we showed some real character in

“At half time, we were well in the game without playing particularly well. Our structure was fine but our execution with the ball was too poor.

I felt our intent, our aggression and our use of the ball was a lot better in the second half. We still didn’t have enough quality moments, though.

“So much is expected of Chieo and he has a big responsibility. He is still learning his game and you are not going to perform at your best in every game in this league. He’s still gaining experience in the Championship and I have no qualms with Chieo.

I’m pleased he got his goal because that is the only thing that he has been lacking in recent weeks.”
