olympic champion siGns up to mayor’s team

South Yorkshire’s Mayor Oliver Coppard appoints

Ed Clancy OBE as the region’s new Active Travel Commissioner.

Ed Clancy is a triple Olympic cycling champion, multiple World & European champion and the most successful Team Pursuit rider in history.

Ed’s priority is to improve the region’s walking and cycling networks, so everyone feels safe and able to walk or cycle.

He’s been appointed by South Yorkshire’s Mayor Oliver Coppard to work with him to make South Yorkshire a safer and easier place to walk and cycle.

Ambitious plans are underway to build more

than 620 miles of accessible walking and cycling routes linking South Yorkshire’s towns and cities. The South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) is investing £85m building the Active Travel network so that everyone who wants to walk and cycle around the region feels safe and able to.

South Yorkshire’s Active Travel Commissioner Ed Clancy said: “I’m honoured to be South Yorkshire’s new Active Travel Commissioner and I can’t wait to get stuck into the new role.

“I want to use my platform to break down those barriers that stop people walking or biking to get where they need to go. Too many of

us are driving cars, that’s clogging up our roads and making them more dangerous.

“South Yorkshire has some of the deadliest roads in the country and this stops people choosing to walk or ride the short distances they currently drive, which just adds to the pollution and the danger. If you’re scared to cross the road, you’ll use the car instead.

“I’m committed to using my platform to get more people of all ages to walk, cycle, scoot or skate around South Yorkshire and this means giving people a real, safe choice when it comes to their journeys.”

Currently 1 in 4 journeys

under 500m are taken by car. According to Public Health England, 700 people a year die prematurely in South Yorkshire because of poor air quality.

South Yorkshire’s Mayor Oliver Coppard said: “I’m determined to build a betterconnected, more sustainable and healthier South Yorkshire and making sure everyone can walk or cycle where they want to is key to that.

“Right now our roads are too congested, it’s dangerous, it’s making us sicker and it’s stopping us reaching our Net Zero targets. Too often people don’t feel safe walking or cycling because our roads are too busy and we need to change that. No

one’s going to leave the car at home if it’s easier or feels safer not to, and that’s why the work Ed will do with us is so important. That’s why it’s great to welcome Ed Clancy as our new Active Travel Commissioner, it’s vital work and I’m sure he’ll be a huge success. I’m sure he’ll be a huge success and help us build a better connected, healthier and more sustainable South Yorkshire.”

This week, (February 6) Active Travel England announced £200 million to improve walking and cycling routes and boost local economies in England. South Yorkshire was given £1m towards walking and cycling route plans, e-bike loans and training.

spOTTING THE sIGNs Of bEd bUGs

Your bedroom is essentially your safe haven; it’s the place where you can relax and unwind at the end of the day, but that can quickly change when you have unwanted guests like bed bugs. Not to mention, they can be quite difficult to spot, causing them to become more of a nuisance in your home and therefore harder to get rid of.

Fortunately, experts have provided seven signs to look out for and some tips to remove them from your bedroom.

Unusual smell

One of the early signs of bed bugs is a strange, musty scent lingering in your bedroom, despite there being no clear cause of it being there, such as a dirty pile of clothes. When bed bugs feel threatened, they emit what is called alarm pheromones which have a faint smell of raspberries, cilantro, or almonds – and in severe bed bug cases, this smell we be mixed with the odour of dead bugs and shed cell casings which creates a rusty scent.

Bites

If you wake up with red, itchy bites, this could be a sign of bed bugs as they typically feed on blood during the night. Usually, bites will appear on arms, hands, and legs and will be in small clusters of a few bites, but they can also show up in single bites. These bites are not usually dangerous, but some people can be allergic – so if you experience extreme itchiness, swelling, blisters, or a fever it’s crucial to seek help from a medical professional.

Blood stains

Once a bed bug is finished feeding itself, the blood can leak out if you squash them during your sleep by sudden movements like rolling over. If you notice any small splotches of blood on your bed sheets

CALL

or clothing, check for anything on your body first that could be the cause, like a scab. If there’s no visible cause of the blood, it’s likely that these stains occurred from bedbugs.

Dark, brown marks

Dark marks from bed bug droppings about the size of a pen tip can appear on mattresses, sheets, headboards, and even your walls, and they’re a lot smaller than blood stains. They will also give off a faint, rusty smell that contributes to the unusual odour altogether.

Eggs

Bed bug eggs can be hard to spot, as they are only around 1mm long – but they can be found by paying attention to anything that looks like small rice grains in your bed. They can be loosely stuck to different types of surfaces, typically the mattress seams and joints or behind the headboard.

Shell casings

Often easier to spot than the bed bugs themselves, shell casings are an early sign of infestation. Bed bugs shed several times during different lifecycle stages, meaning that their shell casings can come in different sizes – but you can spot them by their yellow, translucent appearance in the seams, folds, and crevices of mattresses, or even other areas such as cracks in walls and furniture.

Live bed bugs

It can be quite a challenge to spot a live bed bug, as they normally look for a hiding place, however with a severe infestation you are more likely to notice them. Adult bed bugs are approximately 4-5mm long, with bed bug nymphs starting at just 1mm. Their hiding spots can be various places from your bed and the area next to it to furniture and your walls.

How to remove them from your bedroom

It can be difficult to

completely get rid of bedbugs, especially with a severe infestation, so it’s advised to contact the council or a pest control service to ensure they’re no longer taking over your bedroom. However, there are some steps you can take yourself to put your mind at ease.

1) First of all, try to identify all of the areas where the bed bugs could be hiding by using a flashlight and a magnifying glass. This includes your entire bed, cushions, cracks in walls and furniture, loose wallpaper, the seam between wallpaper and the ceiling, and underneath decorations on your wall.

2) Wash all of your affected bedding on clothing on a hot wash, as well as using the tumble dryer on a hot setting for a minimum of half an hour. For anything that can’t be washed, place them in plastic bags and leave in the freezer for 3-4 days.

3) Using an insecticide is not recommended as some of them can contain harmful chemicals that can be dangerous when used indoors, but you can opt for a bed bug spray to use before vacuuming which is typically safe for mattresses and furniture.

4) Clear out any rubbish from your bedroom and put it in the bin, such as magazines, and make space ready to vacuum.

5) Use a vacuum on the entire floor, making sure to get all of the corners – you can use the small wand to get into other areas of the bedroom, such as furniture and cracks in the wall. Getting cosy in bed on an evening is something that many people look forward to at the end of the day. Unfortunately, this can be ruined when bed bugs take over your bedroom, so it’s important to know what signs to look out for so that you can get back to relaxing quickly and to avoid a more complicated process of removing them.

Yorkshire Water has increased the number of customers it is helping through its financial support to more than 90,000, showcasing the utility’s commitment to supporting customers during the ongoing cost of living crisis.

Yorkshire Water currently has five financial support schemes that help customers struggling to pay their bill and recently offered an additional £70 payment to more than 45,000 Yorkshire Water customers receiving the social tariffs.

Angie Markham–Nock, customer support manager at Yorkshire Water, said: “We know some of our customers are concerned about their bills and throughout the last 12 months we’ve increased the amount of support we have available. We’ve provided support to over 90,000 customers in the last 12 months, providing such support as one-off payments and helping them access social tariffs or debt schemes to help make bills more affordable.

In addition Yorkshire Water has provided payment breaks, tailored payment arrangements and signposted external debt and benefit support to thousands more customers across the region. It is extremely stressful to be concerned about money and we’re pleased to be able to support our customers so that we can remove some of their financial worries. We have expert teams who are able to quickly signpost and explain the schemes available to customers, and we’ve simplified our online application forms to make it even more accessible.” Additionally, the utility has expanded the number of customers on its priority services register (PSR), which helps people with disabilities, long-term illnesses, or caring responsibilities, to over 100,000 – up from 77,000 last year.

Oliver Coppard, Mayor of South Yorkshire, has outlined plans for an independent inquiry to help protect strategic infrastructure in this region. This has been triggered by the decision of Peel Group to close Doncaster Sheffield Airport (DSA) last year and follows an unsuccessful appeal for judicial review of the company’s decision by Doncaster Council. The inquiry will look at whether new powers, policies or laws are needed to protect similar and new infrastructure projects in the future, at the local, national, and regional level –including through the region’s devolution settlement. Its findings are expected to hold lessons for places outside of South Yorkshire. It will be chaired by lawyer, business, civic leader and former High Sheriff of South Yorkshire, Martin McKervey. Coppard said: “What happened to our airport should never have been allowed, and yet we did not have the ability to stop it from happening. We were at the mercy of a private company over whom we had no control, and a government in London who refused to intervene. That simply can’t be allowed to happen again. Increasingly, we are talking about how proper devolution might work in this country. For me, proper devolution has to mean putting power in the hands of our communities so we can build the type of economy we want for our region and have proper democratic control over

the infrastructure we all rely on. South Yorkshire has lost two airports in ten years. Despite the millions of investments and the years of support our region poured into DSA, when push came to shove we simply didn’t have the powers, money or control we needed to stop it from being closed and mothballed. We need to urgently look at how we shift the balance of power back into the hands of our communities.”

Doncaster Council says it is pursuing a Compulsory Purchase Order for the airport. The inquiry’s scope will be defined so as to prevent its work being in any way prejudicial to ongoing legal action surrounding the airport. McKervey said: “The strong feelings of business and the local community over Doncaster Sheffield Airport’s closure show that – whilst due process is of course to be respected – it is clearly not enough in itself to ensure private decisions and regional ambitions are aligned. It is therefore right that independent experts –trusted by business, the community and a wide range of stakeholders – come together to review what more can be done to protect our critical infrastructure and economic assets.”

The inquiry will be led by the independent chair, with a secretariat provided by the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority at arm’s length to maintain independence.

A study has found that 96% of GB residents are not testing their smoke alarms as regularly as is recommended, and that less than half have a fire escape plan for their home.

In the year 2020/21, fire services in England, Scotland and Wales attended over 630,000 total incidents, tragically resulting in over 300 fatalities. As part of a report on residential fire safety, High Speed Training surveyed over 2000 GB adults, and found that an incredibly high number [96%] were not engaging in weekly testing as is recommended by fire services. Smoke alarms are one of the most effective defences against fatal fires in the home, with estimates suggesting that you are eight times more likely to die in a fire if your home does not have working smoke alarms. In private rented and social rented homes, it is the duty of the landlord to ensure a suitable number of smoke alarms are installed and functional at the beginning of the tenancy.

If a fire does break out in your home, having an agreed escape plan is essential to increase your chances of escaping without serious injury.

The main key to a good fire escape plan is to include alternate routes

to safety in case one exit is blocked or dangerous to use. Though escape plans are recommended by fire services, the survey found that 55% of people in the GB do not have a fire escape plan in place in their home. Faulty electrics, including appliances, wiring, and overloaded sockets, cause around 4,000 house fires in England every year. The maximum current allowed to safely flow through the socket should be clearly marked on the back or underside of the extension lead. The report found that 77% of respondents were unsure on how to check either the voltage or the amperage levels of a socket.

Closing all of the internal doors in your home is one way to increase your chances of being able to escape from a house fire. A closed door can hold back fire and smoke, and buy you precious time to escape. However, in the survey, 66% of people don’t close their internal doors every night. Another simple step to add to your routine is to make sure that your exit route is clear of trip hazards. In the disorientating smoke of a house fire, objects on the floor could pose a real risk. The survey found that a huge 71% of respondents don’t ensure their exit routes are clear every night.

Voice of Sheffield United Gary Sinclair named as Weston Park Cancer Charity Patron

Weston Park Cancer Charity is delighted to welcome Gary Sinclair as a patron of the Charity. Well known as Sheffield United’s Stadium Announcer, as well as owner of popular late night bar, Maggie May’s. Gary joins other Charity patrons including Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill CBE, Darren Gough and most recently announced, Celebrity Chef Tim Bilton. Gary says: “First and foremost I was honoured to even be considered, and I’m proud as they come to accept the honour.

“I know I’m joining a great team of patrons, whose mission like mine is just to carry on raising funds, raising awareness and doing anything we can to help those with cancer, going through cancer and who will sadly suffer from cancer in the future. The fight goes on.”

“I’m aware of the magnificent work Weston Park Cancer Charity does and I’m just so proud, along with my mum – to accept this honour and carry on doing my bit. It’s a charity which has been so special to me over the years, and like everybody I’ve lost friends and family.”

Gary has been a longstanding supporter of the Charity and gives up his time to support Weston Park in whatever way he can. His support means so much to the Charity and he recognises now, more than ever,

the need for support. The pandemic has been cruel to everybody, but especially now with the cost-ofliving crisis, it is going to stretch everybody and it’s going to have an impact on us all. The charity relies on disposable income. As people’s disposable income is shrinking, people have to plan accordingly. But the charity even more so.

"Cancer doesn’t know what time it is, what the economy’s like, it’s no respecter of wealth or income.”

Cat Rhone, Deputy CEO of Weston Park Cancer Charity, says: “We are thrilled to welcome Gary as a patron of Weston Park Cancer Charity and cannot thank him enough for the generous support he has given us over the years. With the vital support of our patrons we can continue to be there and care in every sense for everyone in our region who is affected by cancer.”

Gary says: “It’s about letting people know – don’t be scared. Weston Park Cancer Charity are there for you – you’re not alone.”

Plea for SPring Budget action aS 21 PuBS cloSe doorS to the PuBlic every week in Britain

In the last 6 months of 2022, 554 pubs closed for business or stood empty without tenants, new statistics from CAMRA reveal. CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale, is calling on the Prime Minister and Chancellor to put together a support package to save the UK’s pubs after new figures showed that 21 pubs a week are closing for business or losing their licensees. Pub closure statistics revealed by the consumer organisation for the period July – December 2022 show that 554 pubs in Great Britain are

now classed as ‘long term closures’, meaning they have gone out of business or are standing empty.

The shocking statistics have prompted CAMRA to call for the Government to invest in a dedicated support package to save local pubs which are at the heart of communities up and down the country.

Beer drinkers and pub goers are being asked to contact their MP to ask them to support action to save pubs in the Government’s Spring Budget.

CAMRA’s one-minute lobbying tool matches people with their local MP and gives them a template email, making it easy for people to join the campaign to save their locals. The tool is available at: https://camra.eactivist.com/page/121106/action/1

Commenting on pub closure figures for the last half of 2022, CAMRA Chairman Nik Antona said:

“These figures should be an urgent wake-up call for the Government.

Without a support package in the Spring Budget, we risk losing more pubs which are at the heart of community life and play such a crucial role in bringing people together and tackling loneliness and social isolation.

“With the cost of doing business rocketing, energy costs skyhigh and customers tightening their belts it is little wonder that hundreds of pubs across the country are closing for business or are standing empty. We know that the licensed trade can thrive and drive growth in the economy, but only if the Government acts quickly.

“That’s why CAMRA is calling on all pub goers to join our campaign for urgent help to save our pubs which includes giving more help with energy bills from April, making the business rates system fairer for pubs and cutting tax on draught beer and cider by 20% to give our locals a fighting chance to compete with the likes of supermarket alcohol.”

This year’s Winter Tour will present a mix of long-established Fairport favourites and some surprises from albums old and new. Fairport Convention have won a BBC Lifetime Achievement Award and Radio 2 listeners voted their ground-breaking album Liege & Lief ‘The Most Influential Folk Album of All Time’. Their story has been celebrated with television documentaries on BBC Four and Sky Arts. The band features founding member Simon Nicol on guitar and vocals, Dave Pegg on bass guitar, Ric Sanders on violin, Chris Leslie on fiddle, mandolin and vocals. BLADES EXTEND RUN WITH DERBY DRAW

United extended their impressive unbeaten further with a hard-fought point at the AESSEAL New York Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

As expected, the clash against the Millers was a typical South Yorkshire derby, with goalscoring chances at a premium, although it was the Blades who were pushing and looked the most likely to win the spoils, particularly as the second half progressed.

Boss Heckingbottom made two changes from the starting XI last on duty in the Sky Bet Championship, with McBurnie replacing the suspended Jebbison and Osborn recalled as Doyle (calf) missed out.

Clark returned to the matchday 18, where he was joined on the bench by youngster Marsh.

United started positively, but after Fosu had attempted to buy a penalty, Foderingham had to be alert to deny Ogbene after he had latched on to Hugill’s flick on. There was then a minute or two Sheffield United has recieved two nominations, one for ‘Best Professional Football Club’ and one for ‘Best Football Club or Individual in the Women’s Game’, whilst Rainbow Blades have been nominated for the ‘Supporters Group’ Award. The awards ceremony will take place on the 24th of February at the National Football Museum in Manchester. These nominations again reaffirm United’s commitment to

UNDUP

THE START AND THE FINISH

of concern for the Blades, over Ndiaye’s welfare after a clash of headers with Hall.

Thankfully the Senegalese international was fit to continue and gradually the visitors then started to assert themselves, a swift break ended when a fortunate deflection from Bogle’s cross was gathered by Johannson, with the stopper than making a good save to deny Berge from 20 yards out.

The Blades then forced a flurry of corners in quick succession, with Bogle drawing a save from Johannson from the last of the four. But arguably the best chance of the opening 45 minutes came the way of the hosts as Fosu did well to find Odoffin unmarked in the penalty area, thankfully for the Blades though, Foderingham parried away his header.

The opening moments of the second half saw Ahmedhodžić require treatment following an accidental clash with Osborn, the Bosnian

made a swift recovery though and headed over from Bogle’s cross following a swift counter. Ahmedhodžić was then harshly cautioned for a foul on Fosu, after Rathbone had dragged a shot wide. United were the side in the ascendency, although clear chances were hard to come by, as Bogle blazed over from Berge’s pass. Both sides then made substitutions, with the Millers forced into a concussion change

as Wright left the field moments after coming on following a blow to his head, whilst Sharp and McAtee were introduced by Heckingbottom. Rathbone was unsurprisingly booked as the clocked ticked down, but despite throwing numbers forward and enjoyed the better territory they just couldn’t break the Millers resistance, despite the best efforts of Sharp and deep into added time Bogle, as the spoils were ultimately shared.

A powerful beginning and thoroughly professional finish had Darren Moore purring as the Owls reached the summit of League One with a 1-0 win over Plymouth. Callum Paterson scored the only goal of a fiercely contested match, punctuating a lightning start that ultimately won the game. At the end, Wednesday managed proceedings to the point where the Pilgrims could barely get out of their own half.

Moore said: “It was a

professional performance all over the pitch. We had to start the game we did because we are playing the team at the top of the league.

“We came out flying, we put them on the back foot and credit to the players, I’m so pleased for them tonight.

“Pato took his goal really well and it’s such a shame for him that he had to come off later in the game.

“It’s a muscular injury and I’ve just spoken to him now, it’s sore, and we will have him assessed over

the next day or two but I’ve got to be honest, it doesn’t look good.”

On a brighter note, another clean sheet - our 17th of the seasonequals a club record just over halfway through the campaign and Moore credited the whole squad for the achievement.

The gaffer added: “It really is credit to the whole group, they have worked so hard. To equal a club record at this stage of the season is remarkable really.

“Today was a great example, we defended

really well, Cameron didn’t have many saves to make against the league leaders and that says a lot.

“They all deserve to be where we are tonight on top of the table, I am so pleased for the fans and everyone connected with Sheffield Wednesday, but the work is only just beginning.

“Now we are there the challenge is to stay there and the only way we will do that is by continuing the work that has taken us to the top.”

WE HELD oUR oWN AGAINST A GooD oppoNENT

Matt Taylor following his side’s 0-0 draw with Sheffield United at AESSEAL New York Stadium...

“I think the game was entertaining enough in terms of the effort that both teams put in. We came across a quality team today and held them generally at bay.

promoting equality, diversity and inclusion in the sport. We will continue working hard every day to ensure Sheffield United Football Club is safe, inclusive and welcoming to everyone.

“”This is an unbelievable achievement. For Sheffield United, Shefield United Women & Rainbow Blades to be shortlisted across 3 different categories in the Football v Homophobia awards is another landmark moment in our LGBTQ+ inclusion journey. It’s once

again testament to the hard work that has gone into LGBTQ+ inclusion at Bramall

Lane, within the Football Club and amongst the fan base over the year.”

“We had two good chances in the first half, but I know we didn’t create enough in the second. We ran out of a little bit of legs and steam but how resolute they

were at the back is credit to every single one of them.

“On another day, maybe Haks’ chance goes in, but we have to give respect to the opposition, who pinned us back at times and caused us problems.

“There were a few debuts out there and returning bodies, so hopefully this is a sign of what is to come in terms of what we want to achieve.

“We’ve gone toe-totoe with a very good team today, they’ll get promoted out of this

league and deservedly so but we have to our mentality that we want to try and win games of football.

“Bailey had a clash of heads on the far side, the other lad didn’t seem too injured by it, so I think it was just the area of his head that has made him concussed.

“I don’t think he quite knew where he was when Lee [Peltier] and the physios spoke to him and he is as tough as they come. The big issue now is what we do in terms of

SCHoFIELD poINTS To LACK oF

Danny Schofield felt Rovers lacked quality in attacking areas as they fell to defeat against Hartlepool United. Rovers had the majority of the attacking play during the game but failed to make pressure count and were undone with Dan Dodds’ late breakaway goal for the visitors.

Schofield on how the game played out:

“I think performancewise, there was lots of it that I was really pleased with. The final third and the final action, not so much.

“There were one or two chances where I felt we could have done better in that moment. And the rest is creating chances but not ones that were clear cut.

“It’s difficult sometimes when a team is sitting in really deep and Hartlepool did that really

well. We didn’t have that final action and quality in the final third to result in a goal.

“We were unsure on which players they’d select, which shape and tactical formation but it is what it is. We just dealt with that the best we could and focused on what we could do with and without the ball. For large parts of the game, I thought we were good but suffered on the counter late in the game.

“We conceded a number of goals in the previous game and we wanted to really improve on that, which I thought for large periods we did.

“We knew Hartlepool would come here full of fight. They’re fighting for their lives and we needed to be up for the challenge. That was my first message to the players.

“I thought we defended well and were aggressive

concussion protocols. “We have come up against quality opposition in recent weeks, none more so than Sheffield United but we have to keep backing up results, regardless of who we play.

“We need the same desire and the same will, no matter who we play. That has been one thing that has pleased me in recent weeks, the desire has been second to none.”

ATTACKING qUALITY

enough and fell short in our attacking final third.”

On recovering from a difficult run of results:

“It’s a difficult moment. We need to stick together collectively and grow through this moment of adversity. We need to get the supporters back on board and you do that with even better performances and results.

“We’re all judged on the results and that will be our focus.”

On missing an opportunity to climb the league:

“Every defeat is a missed opportunity. We go into every game prepared to win in and first and foremost to be competitive and to try to implement what we can do on a game.”

“It’s never part of the plan to lose football games. It’s about winning football games and we

try to prepare the team as much as possible to do that. You’ve got another team wanting to do the same thing and in the last three games we’ve fallen short on that front.”

On the performance of the recent additions to the squad:

“I think they’ve been really positive since they’ve come into the club. They’ve integrated quickly with the rest of the players and they’ve all been positive signings. I’m sure with more time they’ll add some more quality to the team.”

On Ben Nelson’s withdrawal from the game:

“He’s being assessed. The first thoughts is that it’s just cramp that continued to persist and bother him a bit more. We’ll assess that in the coming hours to see how he recovers from it.”
