rally to save the uk’s pubs from closure

Drinkers and pub-goers are being mobilised in their thousands to urge the Chancellor to take action in his March Budget to save the UK’s pubs and breweries.

Consumer group CAMRA is calling on Chancellor Jeremy Hunt to draw up a support package to save the UK’s pubs and breweries from having to call last orders for good.

The Campaign for Real Ale fears that the trend of small breweries going out of business and pubs closing could explode if help isn’t announced this Spring. Businesses are being hit by

the rising costs of goods and employing staff, help with energy bills being dramatically reduced from April, and customers continuing to tighten their belts.

Now CAMRA is mobilising pub-goers and beer drinkers in their thousands to call on MPs to back the campaign to save the nations’ locals.

CAMRA is calling on the Chancellor to use his Budget to announce:

• A 20% cut in duty charged on draught beer and cider to help pubs, social clubs and taprooms across Great

Britain to compete with supermarket alcohol when the new system of alcohol taxation is introduced in August 2023.

• Assurance that the amount of help hospitality businesses receive towards their energy bills will continue at its current level until Spring 2024.

• Introducing a permanent lower business rates multiplier for hospitality businesses in England to recognise their community value – with funding for governments in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland to do the same.

Pub-goers are being urged to use CAMRA’s e-lobby tool, which quickly identifies your local MP and provides a template letter urging them to back the campaign to save the nation’s pubs and breweries. The tool is available at: https:// camra.e-activist.com/ page/121106/action/

Commenting, CAMRA Chairman Nik Antona said: “Local pubs and breweries are at the heart of our communities, bringing people together and tackling social isolation –but many are under threat

of closing down for good due to the rising costs, spiralling energy bills and punters tightening their belts.

“If we want our pubs to survive and thrive in the months and years ahead, then the Government needs to use the upcoming Budget to announce a support package to save our pubs and breweries. Without help, we risk losing our much-loved community pubs for good and face more small and independent breweries shutting up shop – reducing choice for drinkers up and down the country.”

TIps TO savE ON ENERGY bIlls

BRITS are being urged to flick off the lights between 5pm and 6pm - to save energy and pocket £10.

The National Grid’s Demand Flexibility Service aims to combat energy usage during peak hours. It will see people signed up to the scheme paid to boycott energyguzzling appliances - all while reducing pressure on the grid during increasingly cold nights. But the scheme has been criticised by some, saying it risks dragging the country back to the dark ages. And one leading property expert today says Ministers and energy bosses would be better off encouraging households to be more energy efficient throughout the day - rather than for an hour. Tom Cranenburgh, from Get An Offer, said: “Asking millions of people to turn off devices at one of the busiest times of day is doomed to fail. But the good news is there are things you can do to save money and reduce the level of these crippling bills. By making a few small changes you can literally save hundreds of pounds.”

Offering his 17 top tips which add up to almost £1,500 a year in savings, Here’s how it’s done… Boil what you need when you make a brew. Nothing more. Nothing less. By avoiding overfilling your kettle you could save £11 a year on your electricity bills. Change the temperature on your thermostat by a couple of degrees.

Experts say 19 degrees is about the norm in the UK. Some people do like their homes a bit warmer, but as a rule of thumb, every degree you turn your thermostat down you will save about £50 a year

Daytime energy costs

can often be far higher. Although most energy suppliers charge the same rate for electricity used throughout the day, some electricity tariffs offer cheaper prices for off-peak electricity used at certain times during the evening and at night.

Check with your provider. More timely energy-use could see you save up to £35-a-year.

Using an eco-function equals money saved.

Turning your dishwasher onto the “eco setting” or “energy saving mode” could save £14 a month or £160 a year.

Aim to be in and out of the shower in four minutes. Taking a fourminute shower every day, rather than the average eight minutes, can help save more than £100 over the course of a year.

Gaps inside the home can leave a huge hole in your finances. By draughtproofing windows, doors and blocking cracks in floors and skirting boards you can save around £45 a year on energy bills. Have one less bath a week.. Swapping a shower for a bath once a week can help you to save around £12 a year, as long as you keep it short!

Invest in a smart meter. They will help you keep on top of your energy usage.

Seeing your costs in real time can inspire the whole family to make adjustments. Some users have reported saving as much as £45 a month or a whopping £500 a year while using them. Keep the tumble drier switched off. Instead aim to air your clothes on a washing line or clothes horse. According to the Energy Savings Trust this will help save you £60 a year. Microwaves are a great way to save money at meal-times. Mixing

up and using other appliances will help too.

By switching to using a slow cooker and a microwave four times a week you can save £58 a year.

Only use the washing machine when it’s full. A washing machine uses around 1kWh of energy per cycle, costing about 28p. By only putting it on when you have a full load you can save £41 a year.

Plug holes in exterior walls. Have a look around the exterior of the house and block up any nonessential holes. Effective insulation will save you at least £100 a year. Reduce the temperature of your boiler flow system. Its default setting is usually too high. Turn it down a bit to between 55 and 60 and your home will feel just as warm, but you could cut your energy bills by 8% and save up to £70 per year. Switching shower heads will freshen up your finances. Replacing your current one with a more efficient model can save you £55 on your gas bills each year.

Thermostat charges might leave you at boiling point. But changing the temperature by a couple of degrees can make a big difference. Experts say 19 degrees is about the norm in the UK. Some people do like their homes a bit warmer, but as a rule of thumb, every degree you turn your thermostat down you will save about £50 a year

Vacuum your fridge and save cash. Dust on the condenser coils at the back can prevent a fridge or freezer from cooling properly. Not keeping your fridge freezer clean could cost a whopping £45 more each year.

Eco efficient light bulbs and other LED saving options are also a great way of saving cash. You can save £2-3 per year for every traditional halogen bulb you switch to a similarly bright LED bulb. If the average UK household replaced all of their bulbs with LEDs, it would save about £40 a year on bills.

CHaRITY NEEDs YOUR HElp!

A NEW Year sales boom at city homeless charity Emmaus Sheffield has led to a call for fresh stock as the organisation gears up for a busy 2023.

Emmaus Sheffield is the drug free working community with quality, self-contained accommodation, training facilities and a workspace for previously homeless men and women aged 18 years and over. It aims through its Social Enterprise programme to provide meaningful work and enable the people it supports – known as companions - to eventually become selfsupporting once more.

One of the charity’s main fundraising projects is its hugely popular second hand store at the organisation’s headquarters in the historic Sipelia Works, a former cutlery factory at Cadman Street, close to the city’s Canal Basin. “Christmas and New Year were extremely busy for our retail section but that success, of course, now means we have a real need for more stock to keep our shelves full,” said Emmaus Sheffield Deputy Manager Charley Fedorenko. “We are actually selling more than ever before - in fact this is the busiest we have ever been as people look for those bargains to tackle the cost of living crisis. We can take any large items of furniture as long as they have their fire safety labels still attached. We do also have a full collection service so there’s no need to worry about getting those items to us. And at the other end of the scale there is always a constant need for household items, bric-a-brac, books, CDs and DVDs and, of course, clothes for all ages.”

To find out more about Emmaus and how to arrange for a collection simply visit http://www. emmaus-sheffield.org.uk or call 0114 272 0677.

RNIb MIlEsTONE REaCHED

Leading sight loss charity the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) has announced its Bookshare service has reached its millionth title. Thousands of children and young people across the UK with a vision impairment and/ or reading difficulties, like dyslexia, now have a million books and education resources at their fingertips.

RNIB’s Bookshare website provides books, worksheets and resources free of charge to teachers, pupils and students which can be downloaded in accessible formats including electronic braille, PDF and audio.

All the titles have been generously donated by 1,046 publishers and are currently used by

45,087 students from 12,647 nurseries, schools and universities. Amber Whiston, 13, is blind in one eye, with tunnel vision in the other. Her vision impairment was caused by damage to the optic nerve as a result of a brain tumour. Her mother, Lara, says Amber is doing well at Tapton School in Sheffield as she’s able to use resources such as RNIB Bookshare that open up a “fantasy world” of reading for her. RNIB Bookshare makes all the difference to kids like Amber, who can’t access things that they want to be able to, just like anyone else. There’s already enough things that she can’t do that her illness has caused, without something as basic as being able to read a book.

Tramlines Festival, Sheffield’s Biggest Party is over the moon to finally reveal the 2023 lineup.

Richard Ashcroft, The Courteeners, and Paul Heaton and Jacqui Abbott will headline The Sarah Nulty Main Stage in the celebratory 15th edition of the three-day event at Hillsborough Park, Sheffield from Friday 21st to Sunday 23rd July. Also amongst the first lineup announcement are: Blossoms, DMA’s, Kaiser Chiefs, Sugababes, Beabadoobee, Kate Nash, Katy B, Sea Girls, Pale Waves, special guests The Enemy and The Zutons plus many more, including the full comedy lineup featuring Omid Djalili, Jonathan Pie and Paul Smith. Day tickets will now go on sale plus the FINAL batch of Weekend tickets on Friday 3rd February at 12pm and are available from www.tramlines. org.uk.

Tramlines, which welcomes 40,000 music lovers and families daily to its mix of music, art, comedy and performance, managed to keep

the 2023 headliners under its hat until cheeky miniature bottles of Henderson’s Relish arrived in the post at addresses across the UK, revealing several artist’s names on its label! General Manager Matt Davies from the Sheffield-based company (the northern rival to the SauceThat-Shall-Not-Be-Named) said, “The recipe for Henderson’s Relish has been kept under lock and key for over 130 years. Normally, we’re quite good with secrets, but we got a bit too excited about the line-up for this year’s Tramlines. Sorry about that.”

The appearance of Richard Ashcroft will be bringing down the Main Stage curtain on Friday night, followed by The Courteeners’ return on Saturday in a historic year where the band’s classic debut album, St Jude, went to number one in the album charts, 15 years after its original release. The Sunday headline slot is always a special one, and who better to host it than the infallible duo, Paul Heaton and Jacqui Abbott.

On the launch of Tramlines 2023, Operations Director and a man who has been involved since the very beginning, Timm Cleasby said, “This year’s lineup is a cracker with some awesome names and, as always, there’s more than just music with loads to do, see and get involved with. My personal mustsees this year are Kate Nash, Rachel Chinouriri, Rumbi Tauro, Sugababes, the funny Paul Smith, and Paul Heaton and Jacqui Abbott. To quote our much-missed friend Sarah, “I Just want to have a massive party with all my friends”. The turns are booked, the party’s on and you’re all invited. It can’t come soon enough”. Spanning rock, pop, indie and alternative – and with even more musical diversity to come in future announcements - festival goers can stomp the festival site to find their all-time favourites or discover something new. There are bands in abundance in this first phase including; local Yorkshire lads, the Kaiser Chiefs, who’ve promised

a new album will drop this year; Manchester favourites Blossoms; the BRIT Award winning Sugababes, and Australia’s DMA’s in a much anticipated appearance after Tramlines 2020 was postponed due to the pandemic when they were originally billed to play. Like everyone who performs, they’re bound to fall in love with Tramlines and its cheeky Sheffield sensibilities. The critically acclaimed Beabadooboo also joins the bill where festival goers will get to witness just why she’s earned her ‘guitar hero’ status. Tramlines welcome back Katy B following her five-year hiatus and is now armed with a ton of new music. Special guest slots this year come from The Enemy and The Zutons, which added to Kate Nash, Sea Girls, Pale Waves, and Red Rum Club, make for a reyt good lineup.

And of course, it wouldn’t be Tramlines without an injection of Sheffield’s finest, Reverend and The Makers who’ll bring the crowd

pleasers as well as teasers from the new album, plus a band who pull in one of the biggest crowds of the weekend for their hilarious spoof covers, The Everly Pregnant Brothers. The full 2023 comedy lineup which takes over Tramline’s T’Other stage during each day, is also announced.

Headline acts are the award winning comedian and Hollywood star, Omid Djalili, the outrageous spoof news reporter, Jonathan Pie, and the quick-witted Hot Water Comedy Club compare and Liverpool Comedian Of The Year, Paul Smith. Plenty more laughs are in store with sets from Tom Wrigglesworth, John Hastings, Nina Gilligan, Tamer Kattan, Scott Bennett, Raul Kohli, and many more.

Since 2009, Tramlines remains true to its roots in supporting both breaking & emerging talent. This year it’s tipping acts such as Stone, The Moly Wallopers, Primaqueen, Jetski, Franz Von, Amaroun, Deadletter, Lizzie Esau, Rumbi Tauro, Deuxe & more new artists on the scene.

Each year, The Library stage is a thriving home to a diverse selection of grass roots artists and once again, local talent competition Pattern and Push will be curating the Saturday lineup, with newly announced local acts Coco, Deuxe, JxK, DJ Lamour and more to be announced soon! Only a handful of Weekend tickets are left for Tramlines 2023, with over 95% sold already. They’ll be back on sale on Friday 3rd February at midday, priced at £140 (+ booking fee) and the first batch of Day tickets from only £50 (+ booking fee).To buy tickets and for more info, people should visit www.tramlines.org.uk

Over five stages of music, comedy and performance, a family friendly area packed with quirky things to do, the best festival food around, bespoke craft beer and ale, vintage clothes stores, and roaming entertainment, there’s a lot to love about Tramlines. The 2022 festival was a sell-out so the advice is to be super quick for this last batch of Weekend tickets.

BLADES SPOIL HOLLYWOOD

United are in the hat for fifth round draw of this season’s FA Cup following a dramatic late equaliser at The Racecourse Ground on Sunday afternoon.

Oli McBurnie’s first-minute header looked to have put United in control of the tie against the National League leaders, only for Wrexham to score three times after the break, with Paul Mullin putting them in front late on after Daniel Jebbison’s red card, but John Egan was again United’s hero scoring in the fifth of seven minutes of stoppage-time to secure a replay next month. Boss Heckingbottom made five changes from the team that beat Hull City for the clash in Wales, with Davies, Basham, McBurnie, Osborn and McAtee all recalled to the starting XI. Youngsters Sachdev and Marsh were named amongst the substitutes. United got off to the perfect start having won a first minute corner. Doyle’s delivery was inviting, MCBURNIE got away from his mark and powered home a diving

Danny Schofield admitted the manner of Rovers’ 4-1 defeat to Mansfield Town was tough to take. Rovers conceded four poor goals at the One Call Stadium, with the timing of the first and third in particular damaging to their efforts. And head coach Schofield pointed to those as the decisive factors in the defeat.

“It was a tough result and a difficult one to take. The manner in which we started the game was poor - to concede after 30 seconds in the manner we did was poor.

header at the near post.

The home side were forced into two early defensive changes, as they lost both their central defenders to injuries. Moments after the second change, Mullin went down as he looked to latch on to Forde’s, but referee Whitestone rightly adjudged any contact with Davies was minimal.

The long throws of Tozer would prove to be a regular occurrence and after Mullin had challenged Davies, O’Connor fired over. At the other end, McBurnie fashioned space for McAtee, but the Manchester City loanee saw his shot deflected behind. On 22 minutes, McBurnie was again involved in the build-up, this time Jebbison powered past O’Connor only to be denied by former Blades stopper Howard. Bogle required some treatment for a facial injury picked up in an accidental clash with Tozer, who continued to launch his missile like throws, but as the first half progressed United defended manfully

“I think all four goals we conceded were poor. Teams aren’t having to do that much to create that chance.

There’s no great football it’s just the first and second contacts and the awareness of runners into the box that are costing us. That’s the disappointing thing.

“When we scored we were fully in the game and in the ascendancy to get back into it. I had full belief in the changes that I made to impact it and they did. For the first 15 minutes of the second half we were in the ascendancy and we scored.

“But the third goal we conceded and the manner

to repel the danger. Seven minutes off added time were signalled following the aforementioned injuries to Tunnicliffe and Hayden and Egan was booked for a foul on Mullin, after Davies had beaten away an earlier effort from the striker.

The Blades made a change at the break with Lowe replacing McAtee, as Osborn moved into midfield. The hosts looked for an equaliser in the opening minutes, Davies parried Young’s initial shot, then saved from Mullin on the rebound before Bogle eventually cleared the danger after a tremendous block by Lowe. But then in the 50th minute Tozer’s long throw wasn’t dealt with and JONES managed to force the ball home from close-range to restore parity. Seconds off after the hour, the home side took the lead as O’CONNOR rattled the ball into the net from a left-wing corner from Young, who had earlier been booked for a foul on Jebbison. But United equalised less than four minutes later,

we conceded it in was tough to take and it was tough for the players to get back into the game after that.”

“Conceding after 30 seconds has a huge impact. We all know that goals change games and shift momentum and mentalities and things like that. To concede after 30 seconds away from home was difficult.

“There were a few words spoken at half time and I just asked for a reaction from

as NORWOOD kept his composure to fire past Howard at the second attempt after Tozer had blocked his first shot at goal. The tie seemingly swung in favour of the home side when Jebbison was red carded on 71 minutes, following a clash with Tozer that was reported to the referee by the fourth official. Palmer looked to grasp the moment, but thankfully his effort didn’t cross the line having hit the underside of the crossbar with Davies beaten. On 86 minutes, Wrexham looked to have snatched the winner, as MULLIN, started and finished a move, slotting underneath Davies from Dalby’s pass. Bogle was booked as seven minutes of added time were signalled, but the Blades never know when they are beaten and they duly rescued a replay deep into that added time through EGAN, who prodded the ball beyond the dive of Howard from another excellent Doyle corner to the back post.

the players. The first half was done and we couldn’t control that any more so what do we do now to impact the second half. We came out all guns blazing and scored a good goal. They responded well for the first 15 minutes of the second half. That’s what I wanted from the start of the game but we didn’t get that. Ultimately the third goal cost us.”

Darren Moore says his side deserved victory against Fleetwood in the Emirates FA Cup fourth round but had to settle for a replay at Highbury Stadium on Tuesday week.

A 1-1 draw played out in S6, with Josh Earl’s own goal cancelling out the opener from Promise Omochere. Wednesday had chances to win the tie but the two teams will do battle for a

fourth time this season in the replay.

Moore said: “I thought we dominated the game and we’ve had so much of the ball and the only thing I would say really is our final contact could have been better.

“The two teams know each other very well now and with the replay, that will be the fourth meeting in around six weeks.

“So this was always going

to be a tight game but overall I think we had the better of it.

“The target was to be in the fifth round and if that wasn’t the case, make sure we are in the hat for the draw.”

Moore was delighted to welcome skipper Barry Bannan back to duty and also enthused about the performance of Mallik Wilks, who was a constant threat to the Fleetwood backline.

He said: “The plan was to always give Baz around 30 minutes and it’s great to have him back because he’s an important player for us.

“With Mallik, I’m delighted for him because he was a real thorn in their side all afternoon.

“The fans could see what he can bring in that role. His ball control was good, he made some great runs and he gives us another string to our bow.”

WE’RE IN A GOOD PLACE – VIKTOR

Johansson hailed the team’s togetherness following two impressive results against promotionchasing Blackburn Rovers and Watford. Having seen a dip in results after returning from the World Cup break, the Millers triumphed 4-0 against Rovers at AESSEAL New York Stadium before picking up an impressive result on the road against the Hornets.

Johansson stressed that the team have set high standards for themselves throughout the course of the season and even after making a string of strong saves in both fixtures, he admitted he was disappointed to have not kept successive clean sheets.

“I’ve never doubted the spirit we have in this team and I knew it was only a matter of time until our luck turned,” Johansson told www.themillers. co.uk.

“This has always been a good place to be, I think we just needed the rub of the green. In our last two games we’ve gone up against two good sides and we’ve had positive results in both, which gives us all confidence.”

Sheffield Wednesday or Fleetwood will travel to either Burnley or Ipswich in the fifth round of the Emirates FA Cup.

The draw was made live on BBC’s The One Show on Monday evening.

The Owls drew 1-1 with Fleetwood on Saturday

“It is a good group here, everyone works hard for each other and we have each other’s backs. That is how I knew it was only a matter of time until our luck changed.

“We were disappointed not to get all three points against Watford, which shows just how good of a place we’re in as a team right now.

“We’re always holding ourselves to high standards and that is why I was disappointed with the goal we conceded, because even though it took a bobble, I thought I could’ve saved it.

“Again though, I feel like that shows where we are as a team right now, we’ve gone toe-to-toe with two good teams and feel like we should’ve had more points.”

Five new faces have arrived in South Yorkshire during the January transfer window, with Sean Morrison, Leo Hjelde and Tariqe Fosu already playing their part in recent results, with Jordan Hugill and Conor Coventry in contention to feature in next Saturday’s South Yorkshire derby against Sheffield Untied.

Johansson has been left exciting by the new additions to the squad and feels it will only help the team towards

achieving their goals.

“It has been brilliant to see some new faces in camp, we’re a very welcoming group here and I feel like that has helped the new lads settle in straight away. “It’s always good to see new faces in the building, they can bring something new to the team, which is of course a positive. We’re all looking forward to see how they get on and that is something which excites us for the rest of the season.”

With no game last weekend, Johansson and the rest of the squad will be benefitted from a well-earned break from action and he feels it will be good to get some down time before

attentions turn to a big game next Saturday. “Personally, I would’ve liked to have had another game on Saturday, but that’s now out of our hands.

“Having said that, it will be good to spend a weekend away to charge the batteries. I’m going back to Sweden this weekend to see my grandparents, which I’m really looking forward to.

“The fixture schedule is obviously so constant and when you do get a brief pause in the calendar, you have to make the most of it.

“This will give us all the opportunity to reset and come back fresh ahead of a big game against Sheffield United.”

at Hillsborough to set up a replay at Highbury Stadium on Tuesday 7 February.

Ipswich and Burnley played out a goalless draw at Portman Road in their fourth round clash.

The replay at Turf Moor will also take place a

week on Tuesday. Should the Blades overcome Wrexham in a fourth round replay next month, United will host Tottenham Hotspur in the fifth round of the Emirates FA Cup.

Monday’s draw was conducted by Alex Scott

and Jermaine Jeans, with Bramall Lane or The Racecourse Ground the destination for Antonio Conte’s Spurs. All fifth-round ties will be played week commencing 27th February.
