South Yorkshire residents are advised to only call 999 or attend Accident and Emergency departments if a condition is a life-threatening emergency.

Health advice by Dr David Crichton, Chief Medical Officer at NHS

South Yorkshire:

“The first days back after the Christmas break are always busy

but today has been beyond anything we have experienced before. We are making an urgent plea to the public across South Yorkshire to only call 999 or attend Accident and Emergency departments if their condition is a life-threatening emergency.”

“Unprecedented levels of attendance at A&E, staff sickness and increased prevalence

of flu and covid have led to very long waits in emergency departments and for ambulances. We urge the public to use alternative services to make use of NHS 111 online and phone services (111 online is for people aged 5 and over). Using NHS 111 online, contacting your GP, or attending your local pharmacist will mean you get treatment much

sooner. Our discharge teams are working extremely hard with patients and families to make sure the transition to home is safe and with the right support in place. You can help by being on hand to collect your loved ones as soon as they’re well enough to return. Collecting family and friends from hospital as soon as they’re ready to be discharged also helps

to free up beds for those who need them.

“As we head into the New Year we also urge anyone experiencing flu or COVID-like symptoms to isolate, so that you do not pass on your infection to others. Both can be serious illnesses, so please take the necessary precautions to protect your loved ones, particularly those who are vulnerable, including getting your vaccines if you are eligible.”

South Yorkshire charities scoop share of £120,000 festive financial boost

Two charities based in South Yorkshire have received a £1,000 Christmas gift thanks to the Benefact Group.

The charities were nominated to win a share of £120,000 by members of the public as part of the Benefact Group’s annual 12 days of giving Christmas campaign.

Tia Greyhound and Lurcher Rescue, which rescues and rehabilitates greyhounds, lurchers and heavy horses, and Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice, a children’s hospice offering palliative care and support to families who have a child with a shortened life expectancy and complex medical needs, are the local charities set to benefit from the money following overwhelming public support in the area. Over 4,000 South Yorkshire residents nominated a cause close to their hearts, with 4,600 charitable causes in the area receiving votes. The 120 winning charities across the UK were picked at random from

those nominated.

Thanking supporters in South Yorkshire, Mark Hews, Group Chief Executive of Benefact Group, said: “Charitable giving is at the heart of our business at the Benefact Group. We are delighted to be giving back to deserving charitable causes once more with our annual 12 days of giving Christmas campaign, part of our Movement for Good Awards. In these challenging times, we know that £1,000 can make a real difference and we’re looking forward to seeing how this festive financial boost will changes lives for the better and bring a positive start to 2023.

“Out of some five million companies in the UK, we are the fourth largest corporate donor* and have an ambition to be the largest. As a Group of financial service businesses, uniquely owned by a charity, all available profits go to good causes, and the more our loyal customers support us to grow, the more the Group can give. As a company, our purpose is to contribute to the greater good of society and, together, we can help many good causes to continue their support for those who need it most in these difficult times.”

SHEFFIELD’S “MAN WITH THE GOLDEN VOICE RETURNS WITH NEW ALBUM

celebrating a momentous five decades in the industry, legendary musician and songwriter Paul carrack, who’s ‘Golden Voice’ features on numerous classic worldwide hits such as ‘How Long’ (acE‘) , ‘Tempted’ (squeeze), ‘The Living Years’, ‘Over My shoulder’ ( Mike and the Mechanics) teams up with the 4 time GRAMMY Awardnominee sWr Big Band & strings on epic new album “ Don’t Wait Too Long” released 20th January 2023.

The covers album celebrates the pioneering golden era in music from the 50s and beyond spanning blues,

gospel, country and jazz including“Cryin’ Won’t Help You” Paul’s tribute to the legendary BB King.

Paul has a deep love of R&B songs from the fifties and beyond. For him, 50s music was filled with intense emotion, it was wildly kinetic and had a profound impact on his career.

In Paul’s mind, it’s where all modern pop music began, the sounds were spectacular and revolutionary. Days when the change from jazz to pop was stretched via pioneers and great singers like Bobby Bland, Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, and Lloyd Price. These artists always resonated as fantastic performers with stylistic

records that had such joy and intensity.

After working with the SWR Big Band on a number of projects, Paul and his producers had the idea to find and record a selection of these timewarped classics, some well-known, others not so much, and the title track, a modern song that harks back to those times called ‘Don’t Wait Too Long’.

Paul said, “Over the past 15 years it’s been my pleasure to collaborate on a number of projects with the SWR Big Band who are widely acknowledged as one of the finest jazz orchestras in the world. Many of these collaborations have taken me, a self-taught

rock n roll musician, out of my musical comfort zone and into areas where I might not ordinarily venture. It’s been a great experience in so many ways which has broadened my musical education whilst learning on the job. With this album I wanted to bring the repertoire and feel of the record a little closer to my own musical roots of Soul, Pop and classic Rhythm and Blues. Recording the album remotely during the 2020 lockdown presented some technical challenges but I think recording my vocals in my studio at home turned out to be a positive and I’m very pleased with the performances which

I believe are some of the best of my long and varied career.”

Highlights on the album include first single “Cryin’ Won’t Help You”, Paul’s tribute to the king of the blues, B.B. King. Paul previously featured on the BB Kings’ Deuces Wild album alongside Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour.

Paul said, “One of the highlights of my career undoubtedly was playing and singing on an album called Deuces Wild by the late, great B.B. King. B.B. was a joy to work with and great fun. This is my tribute to him”

Don’t Wait Too Long is out on 20th Jan 2023.

I said: “There’s the door.”

NEW STORE FOR CHARITY dRY jANUARY SURvEY

The Children’s Air Ambulance (TCAA) has unveiled ambitious plans to transform a former Poundland unit in Sheffield into a charity superstore which will raise vital funds for the lifesaving service.

The charity, which works alongside 11 NHS teams -including The Embrace Yorkshire & Humber Infant & Children’s Transport Service (Embrace), part of Sheffield Children’s Hospital NHS Foundations Trust - to provide high-speed, specialist clinical transfers for critically ill babies and children is due to “land” in a Sheffield retail park in February 2023, after securing the lease. The Kilner Way Retail Park unit will undergo a substantial transformation in the new year turning the 7,000 sq ft space into The Hanger superstore selling both new and pre-loved homeware, furniture, clothing, electricals, living and brand-new white goods. The success of the store is vital as the Children’s Air Ambulance receives no government funding and relies solely on donations from the public and retail income to keep saving lives. This will be the second TCAA superstore, after the children’s charity’s flagship store opened in Doncaster in 2019.

“Shopping in a charity shop is experience shopping,” explained New TCAA Head of

Retail Hannah Coventry. “Customers love the thrill of not knowing what they will find, and we want to make that experience last longer by offering a wider choice in a fantastic and friendly environment. This superstore should help us attract more footfall to drive that essential income to keep our service saving young lives. It should also provide a real benefit to the existing retail units within the park as their customers can visit once they have finished shopping for a bargain browse or to drop off donations.”

The charity also is due to open a donation station to make it quick and easy for people to drop off donations and, once drivers are in place, the retail team will offer a free furniture donation collection. This great announcement coincides with the charity’s 10th anniversary of lifesaving high-speed transfers as well as the onboarding of the new AgustaWestland 169 helicopter with a bespoke interior solution, ensuring the best clinical outcomes are achieved by the national charity. Work is currently underway to get the store ready for a February opening and new jobs will be created as well as many volunteering opportunities. For more information about the charity, call 0300 3045999 or visit www. childrensairambulance. org.uk

The results of a survey looking into the nation’s drinking habits, which was carried out ahead of the start of Dry January 2023, has just been published. The survey, in which over 1,200 UK adults aged 18+ participated, also considered the nation’s health and fitness intentions, which included reducing and removing sugar and artificial sweeteners from our diets, and incorporating mindfulness techniques, such as yoga and meditation, within our daily routines.

Sober curiosity is on the up Of those surveyed, more than one in five already shun alcohol completely.

Of those who continue to enjoy alcoholic beverages, almost one in five describe themselves as “sober curious” – a term used to describe someone who questions the role that alcohol plays in their lives, as well as when and how they consume it. This explains why almost two thirds of those surveyed drink alcohol less than once a week, if at all; while almost one in four intend to take part in Dry January this year – up from 18% who took part in 2022. One in three intend to reduce their overall alcohol consumption in 2023, motivated by reasons including a desire to be healthy and a desire to keep in good shape.

Interestingly, a desire to be happier influenced drinking decisions amongst almost a quarter.

Peer pressure is still a ‘thing’

Despite the increase in those considering their alcohol intake, people still face pressure when it comes to drinking, with situations in which respondents have been pressurised to drink alcohol including at work (15%), at friend’s house (21%) and even in their own family home (6%).

More than a quarter (29%) have experienced pressure to drink alcohol in the pub – perhaps unsurprisingly the highest of any

environment included within the survey.

Alcohol isn’t the only thing getting the cold shoulder

As a result of a growing awareness of our own personal health and wellbeing, more than half are keenest to remove sugar from their diets – a further 15% would prioritise the removal of both sugar and artificial sweetener. Therefore, we are likely to see further innovation from food and drink brands, offering an easy and effective way to switch to a healthier option, supporting those who are keen to make changes to their diet.

Sugar content even outweighed cost when it came to what most influenced the decision to purchase a soft drink!

Tee-total celebrities provide inspiration When it comes to the world of celebrity, respondents to the survey found that footballer Harry Kane was the most inspiring tee-total British man, with almost one in five (19%) putting him at the top of their poll, closely followed by Daniel Radcliffe and Andy Murray (both 18%); Russell Brand (16%); Chris Martin (14%) and Calvin Harris (9%). Fearne Cotton was cited the most inspiring tee-total British woman, with 26% of the vote; Zoe Ball followed (22%), together with Lily Allen (17%) and Florence Welch (14%). Kate Moss, who reportedly quit alcohol in 2008, was found to be most inspiring to 12% of those surveyed.

Exercise, mindfulness techniques and a growing interest in gut health will prevail in 2023 While exercise was the priority for 2023, with 21% putting this as their leading healthy intention, more than one in ten is prioritising the removal of sugar and artificial sweetener from their diets; while the same number plan to prioritise the incorporation of mindfulness techniques, such as yoga, Pilates and meditation, into their lives.

CHARITY REl AUNCHES

Sheffield-based the British Tinnitus Association – the only charity in the UK dedicated to supporting the one in seven adults in the UK who live with tinnitus - is now Tinnitus UK.

The world’s leading tinnitus charity unveiled a new name, new website and new chatbot – aimed at tackling the growing number of people developing tinnitus.

Deanne Thomas, CEO of Tinnitus UK said: “Now we are Tinnitus UK. This new name puts tinnitus first, because taking on tinnitus is the main reason we’re here, and we want everyone to know that. Becoming Tinnitus UK will help us reach more people with tinnitus, be more visible and raise more awareness of this condition which can have a significant impact on people’s quality of life. We began life as the British Tinnitus Association in 1979, which reflected our roots as a network of tinnitus support groups. Then most people started to call us the BTA.” Lynne Gillon, Chair of Trustees of Tinnitus UK, said: “This marks the start of a very exciting period for the charity, as we build on our past successes and strive to reach even more people who may be struggling with tinnitus - moving nearer to our vision of: Creating a world where no one suffers with tinnitus.”

Tinnitus UK received a major digital grant to improve their digital resources to further help those with tinnitus, and they used this to create a new and improved

website, an enhanced web chat and a tinnitus chatbot. Deanne added: “Our new website makes it easier for people to navigate, to engage with Tinnitus UK and to find areas of support that suits them. The chatbot means that we can help people no matter what time of day it is – as we know tinnitus can spike at night. Our website integrates with our new CRM (client relationship management) system, which will help us to connect with more people with tinnitus than ever before!”

The chatbot will be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week – and will guide people with tinnitus to relevant resources each time they visit the website. This is the only tinnitus chatbot that is free and available to everyone and marks a significant step forward for the charity in its aim to reach more people with tinnitus.

Alongside the new name, a refreshed visual identity has been developed, which features clear bright colours and a soundwave graphic.

Tinnitus UK’s new website and chatbot can be found at www.tinnitus.org.uk

Life-saving defibrillators have now been installed across every Northern train station across South Yorkshire.

The scheme was partly funded by South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) and has seen a total of 36 new defibrillators installed in the last few months of 2022. Every defibrillator has step-by-step, spoken word instructions built-in to it which explain how to use it on someone in an emergency. Computers inside the defibrillators work to analyse a person’s heart rhythms to find out if an electric shock is needed. Electrodes then automatically deliver the shock if required. All of the life-saving units have been added to the national register and training will be offered by the local ambulance service to station staff along with local communities.

Tony Baxter, regional director at Northern, said: “All our defibrillators are in public places, and they are of huge benefit, not only to those travelling with us, but also the communities we serve. We plan to continue to introduce life-saving defibrillators at even more of our stations.

I would like to thank SYMCA for their help in making this happen.”

Northern installed more than 100 defibrillators across its stations in the North of England

last year. John Dowie, interim executive director of infrastructure and place at SYMCA said: ““We welcome the latest installations as it means that now there’s a defibrillator in or nearby every rail station in South Yorkshire. Having them available on public spaces used daily by a large number of people is reassuring as it significantly increases the chance of survival following a cardiac arrest.”

Locations of new defibrillators across South Yorkshire: Meadowhall, Bentley, Barnsley, Conisbrough, South Elmsall, Kirk Sandall, Chapeltown, Thorne South, Fitzwilliam, Hatfield & Stainforth, Sandal & Agbrigg, Bolton-Upon-Dearne, Moorthorpe, Hope (Derbyshire), Wombwell, Hathersage, Dore & Totley, Kiveton Bridge, Dronfield, Thurnscoe, Althorpe, Grindleford, Workington, Goldthorpe, Mexborough, Kiveton Park, Thorne North, Dodworth, Adwick, Silkstone Common, Darton, Shireoaks, Elsecar, Bamford, Penistone, Woodhouse

Northern’s new timetable went live in December and customers are advised to use the new ‘Check My Timetable’ feature on its website to see the changes specific to their local station.

Temporary exclusion zone outside Graves Building (Central Library)

The results of a recent external survey of the Graves Building (Central Library) have shown that there are substandard areas of stone or brickwork on all sides of the building.

This is due to the building’s construction and the delamination (oxidisation) of its steel framework, which has expanded causing cracks and loose masonry.

From the 10th January, a temporary three metre exclusion zone will be placed around the building on the Arundel Gate, Surrey Street and Tudor Square elevations. This will include a footpath closure on Surrey Street along the whole of the footpath next to the building.

Entrances and exits will have protective scaffold canopies installed for the safety of members of the public and our staff as they enter and leave the building.

Councillor Richard Williams, Chair of Communities, Parks and Leisure Committee, said: “I’d like to reassure people using the Graves Building that after the survey, engineers did what was needed to prevent further damage to the structure. With the fencing and the canopies in place the building can still be used safely.

“We expect an exclusion zone to be in place for at least 12 months. The zone installed today will be replaced with a more robust structure soon given the length of time that an exclusion zone will be in place. We will keep our residents updated as the work on the building progresses.”

THE BOYS DEBUT IN TOWN

Hitting the Crookes Social Club stage on the 11th February will be one of the UK's leading tribute to the music of Thin Lizzy and the legendary Phil Lynott.

The Lancashire based band will be crossing the border following a successful 2022 seeing them play to sold out theatre shows, music venues and festivals across the UK.

Twin Lizzy have a reputation for reproducing the authentic sound of Thin Lizzy with twin lead guitars and arguably the closest sounding front man taking on the Phil Lynott role.

Singer and bass player Roger told The Mercury “2023 will see us performing the legendary Live and Dangerous album in its entirety celebrating 45 years since it's general release something I believe is unique within the tribute scene and certainly this year.”

Twin Lizzy's drummer Neil said: “We are kicking the year off with an already sold out show at Chorley Theatre and we're hoping the Crookes Social Club will be no different, this is our first time performing in Sheffield so we are hoping to make some new friends.”

halving energy bill help puts uK’s thriving beer scene at risK: caMra

Commenting on reports that help with energy bills for hospitality businesses will continue until 2024 but only at half the current rate, CAMRA chairman Nik Antona said: “The prospect of energy bills massively increasing from April this year will be extremely worrying for hospitality businesses – particularly community pubs, social clubs and small breweries and cider producers that are vital for consumer choice and a thriving beer scene.

“The cost of goods and employing staff continues to rocket and customers are tightening their belts. Many businesses wonder how they

will be able to turn a profit if energy bill support is halved.

“If this cut is announced next week, then the Chancellor’s Budget in March will need to provide extra support for hospitality businesses if we are to avoid the nation’s beloved pubs and breweries facing the threat of permanent closure.

“It will be vital that venues get more help with the burden of business rates – and for the new, lower rate of duty charged on draught beer and cider to be introduced as quickly as possible to help pubs and small, independent breweries compete with the likes of supermarket alcohol.”

a new year and a new set of challenges for clubs

As we embark on another year together, we can be certain that 2023 will present many significant challengesfor clubs and for the Union itself.

The energy crisis, combined with rising inflation and the general economic downturn, has affected every individual and businessin the country and clubs are no exception.

But I have no doubt that our clubs – as they always have done – will adapt to any new circumstances and will continue to be there for their members and for their local communities.

Our volunteer army of committee members and club officials will continue to put in their usual countless hours of hard work behind the scenes to keep their clubs running smoothly, whatever obstacles are put in their way. And if there are any hurdles which seem insurmountable, please get in touch with your local branch as soon aspossible to utilise the

collective resources and knowledge of the Union to tackle the problem.

Talking of collective knowledge, we are relaunching the Award in Club Management (ACM) day sessions this year and it encompasses all the key information needed by officials to run their clubs efficiently while keeping them informed of the latest regulations.

As a Union, we will continue to lobby the Government at local and national level on any legislation which affects how we operate, such as that concerning the thorny issues of VAT, Alcohol Duty and Business Rates.

Individual clubs have a vital role to play here and I would urge you all to invite your local MP or Councillor to your club as this will give them an invaluable insight into the unique challengeswhich non-profit making members’ clubs face, as well as alerting them to the positive influence we have on our

neighbourhoods. To my mind, we should be mightily proud of our clubs and the safe, friendly environments they provide for all walks of life and shout our many achievementsfrom the rooftops.

As ever, we will gather in Blackpool in April for Conference Weekend so pleasebe sure to send your club representatives along.

Ahead of the Union’s Annual Meeting on Saturday, April 15, please hold your own discussions regardingthe future of the Union at your club meetings and AGMs and feedit back to the NEC so we can act upon your ideas and build an even stronger organisation which delivers for all ofour members.

This is your Union, fighting for the interests of all our clubs, so please continue to support us as the CIU has supported clubs over the past 161 years.

First half goals from Daniel Jebbison and Jayden Bogle gave the Blades a capital boost in the Emirates FA Cup.

Against fellow Championship outfit Millwall, those goals were enough to book a fourth round berth.

Boss Heckingbottom’s team showed six changes from Monday’s league fixture at QPR, including a start for goalkeeper Davies.

The competition allows nine substitutes and 19year-old Sheffielder Marsh was named on the Blades bench for the first time.

Unquestionably, United were quicker out of the blocks and could have grabbed the lead after just 30 seconds but despite being in a good position, Ndiaye smashed over after Jebbison challenged from a Basham clip down the right channel.

Jebbison had a shot deflected wide and from Norwood’s corner, Robinson connected but could not direct towards goal. There was also a Doyle half-volley which

flew over the crossbar, all in the first 15 minutes.

United continued to force Millwall onto the back foot, which included a few deliveries into the box - from one of which a Robinson overhead kick was on target but blocked - but the lively start was rewarded with the opening goal on 23 minutes.

Doyle’s pass down the right channel found JEBBISON in space and he could not be caught before beating Bialkowski at his near post, in front of an empty Cold Blow Lane stand.

The goal sparked Millwall into the life and despite a spell of possession, they were unable to test a well-protected Davies. The minor storm was weathered and the lead was doubled on 36 minutes. Ndiaye weaved his way around the back of the home defence and his pull-back was perfect for an onrushing BOGLE, who found the net via a deflection and the underside of the crossbar.

Millwall’s only serious chance of the first half

arrived on 44 minutes, and it was a good one. A pass across the box from Bennett found Bradshaw in space inside the six-yard box but Davies managed to get a foot to the effort, deflecting the ball wide.

The start of the second half saw Millwall try to get on top. An effort from substitute Flemming was wide from the edge of the box, whilst Davies had to collect a couple of low crosses.

United, though, remained in control and a threat.

From a neat short corner routine, Doyle’s shot at Bialkowski was parried away and then Ndiaye and Bogle linked up at pace around the hour mark but the Senegalese international’s effort was blocked.

With 20 minutes remaining, Heckingbottom made his first changes - Berge and Sharp - and both were involved straight away in a move that saw Bogle almost claim a second but he was crowded out in the six-yard box.

Voglsammer squandered

a good opportunity for the home side, shooting wide when in space after a loose ball dropped to him, whilst a delicate pass from Stevens found Sharp’s run on 74 minutes but after rounding Bialkowski, the United skipper’s goalbound effort was kicked away by Cooper.

Berge and Sharp were involved again in another chance as the game entered a final 10 minutes, when the speed of the rain increased. It was the Norweigan who pulled a ball back from the right that saw McAtee and Doyle leave for Stevens, whose shot struck Cresswell in the chest.

The later stages saw thunder and lightening around the capital and a late debut for Coulibaly as United looked comfortable, especially after a miss from Burey. Three added minbutes were incidental ahead of the Blades booking a place in the fourth round at the end of January.

SAVOUR THE mOmENT AND mOVE ON!

Darren Moore hailed the Owls on and off the pitch as they progressed to round four of the Emirates FA Cup on a memorable night in S6.

Premier League Newcastle were beaten by the odd goal in three under the Hillsborough lights, with a Josh Windass brace doing the damage.

And Moore said his

players must saviour the moment and then move swiftly on:

“It’s a wonderful night for everyone connected with Sheffield Wednesday.

We played with so much energy, the fans had so much energy, it was a superb all-round performance.

“That’s what I called for and that’s what I got and it was excellent to see.

WE NEEDED THE ExECUTION TO mATCH THE INTENSIT y - TAyLOR

Rotherham United boss Matt Taylor insists his side need to eradicate the errors which are costing them results of late by matching their execution with the intensity at which they are competing.

It was another tough afternoon for the Millers who were knocked out of the Emirates FA Cup by Ipswich Town, despite drawng themselves level and looking like they had grown into the contest when they levelled shortly after the break.

The boys thoroughly deserved it and I’m so pleased for the fans.

“Josh will get the headlines and rightly so as a striker but that was a proper team performance.

“There’s no better place than down here at S6 with an atmosphere like that. I wanted a Premier League team at home, I got that, so for the next

round, what will be will be!

“So now we have to move on, we get back in and we get back to work on the training ground, it’s the only way to be.

“We have a big game at Wycombe on Saturday and next we prepare for that. Tonight has been a night to remember, but we move on and get back to work.”

of the pitch. There were some good performances, as much as we’re feeling negative right now. I thought Cameron Humphreys and Woody performed well and Conor led the line well on his own.

“In the first half we had something to believe in and something to hold onto in terms of the clean sheet and then the equaliser in the second half.

“Unfortunately when we conceded the second goal, we were chasing the game and we couldn’t cover the spaces against a good team.

“You can’t take away the last 25 minutes but In terms of how we set-up, I can’t fault the intent of the team.

“They were in the right place, thinking the right things and putting their bodies in the place where we wanted them to be.

Sheffield Wednesday will host Fleetwood in the fourth round of the Emirates FA Cup.

The Owls overcame Premier League side Newcastle on Saturday evening at Hillsborough to continue their progress in the competition.

The draw for round four was made on Sunday ahead of Manchester City’s third round clash with Chelsea.

As per the previous rounds, Wednesday have been handed another S6 tie, this time against League One Fleetwood.

It will be the second meeting of the month between the two sides, who are also set to go head-to-head in the league one week prior.

United have been drawn away to Wrexham in the fourth round of the Emirates FA Cup.

The Blades will travel to The Racecourse Ground later this month, having beaten Millwall 2-0 at The Den on Saturday thanks to goals from Daniel Jebbison and Jayden Bogle.

Fourth round ties will take place between 27-30 January.

Speaking following the tie at Portman Road the first team manager insisted that he would not criticise his players’ effort levels, but admitted that they need to show more quality in decisive moments at both ends

SINCLAIR APPOINTED PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPmENT PHASE COACH

Rovers are pleased to confirm the appointment of Frank Sinclair as professional development phase coach.

Sinclair has been in the role on an interim basis following the appointment of Chad Gribble to first team assistant head coach in October.

During his time in charge of the U18 group, Sinclair has guided them to the quarter-finals of the Professional Development League Cup, with an important win against Category Two side Barnsley in the previous round.

The U18s are currently sixth in the Youth Alliance League - four points off leaders Lincoln City - after two wins from three games.

“I am really pleased to have been appointed,” Sinclair

mARVIN JOHNSON NOmINATED FOR PFA AWARD!

Marvin Johnson is one of six players in the running for the League One December PFA Vertu Motors Fans’ Player of the Month award. The winner of the award will be decided by supporters

“Unfortunately, we came out second best and that was again a reflection of individual mistakes. When we’ve got a fully fit squad, we can be more flexible with what we’ve got, but unfortunately, we haven’t got that at the moment.

“I would love us to be a little more direct, but – no disrespect to Conor – we haven’t got a physical output at the top of the pitch as our focal point.”

said. “I have been around the Academy for 18 months now and I’ve had the opportunity to work with the U12s up to the U16s this season.

“I helped Chad Gribble with the U18s individual development programme before I took interim charge so I knew the group of players already.

“I am really excited about the young players we have got coming through, especially over the next few seasons, as there are some exciting players in the Academy.”

The former Chelsea defender has an existing relationship with head coach Danny Schofield which will allow him to align his group with the culture and style being implemented at first team level.

Frank added: “The head coach is filtering down a philosophy of how we want to play.

“I know Danny very well as we played together at Huddersfield Town for a couple of years so I know how good his ideas are and how he likes to work, which is a huge benefit to our relationship in terms of knowing how we want to play.

“My job is to feed Danny’s ideas down so that I can help create players that benefit the first team and creates an easy transition for any players who might make the step up to the senior squad.”

and you can give your vote to Marvin by visiting www. riddle.com/view/458669

Johnson was an ever-present for the Owls in December and played the full 90 minutes on each occasion.

Having fallen a goal behind away at Fleetwood on Boxing Day, it was Johnson who completed the comeback with a superb hit on the volley in the second half after George Byers had earlier levelled the contest.

In the same game, Johnson also made a vital goalline clearance and claimed the assist for Byers’ equaliser. The 32-year-old has made 29 appearances in all competitions for Wednesday so far this season.
