FOOTY FANS URGED TO THINK ABOUT TRAVEL TACTICS

With England’s World Cup 2022 campaign underway in Qatar, road safety officers are re minding footy fans not to get caught offside when it comes to the law.

Matches are taking place at times throughout the day and viewers enjoying a drink during the game are being urged to have ‘none for the road.’

The advice is to make a plan to make it home safe whether that’s a taxi, designated driver or public transport.

A spokeswoman

for South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership (SYSRP) said: “We hope everyone really enjoys watching the highlyanticipated World Cup competition.

“But if you’re driving somewhere to watch, we just wanted to remind everyone of the need to get home safely.

“Driving under the influ ence of alcohol increases your chances of being involved in a collision and don’t forget, you could also still be over the drink-drive limit the

morning after.

“No amount of alcohol is safe in your system. Think before you drink.”

Driving under the influ ence of alcohol could lead to being banned from driving, points added on your licence, an unlimited fine, or even imprison ment.

This will mean increased insurance costs, potential job loss and even restrictions on travel to other countries.

“With everything that’s going on right now, with energy prices and the

cost-of-living crisis, why make life harder?” added the spokeswoman.

“Many people think they will be ok the following morning, but you could still be at risk of being over the limit.

“An average liver can process approximately one unit of alcohol per hour, starting one hour after drinking has stopped.

“This means that if some one drinks 12 units, it can take them roughly 13 hours to fully sober up.”

The advice from the Part nership is to make a plan

to get home safe: Book a taxi home from wherever you are watching the game

Leave the car at home and use public transport or walk home if possible Book the following morning off work or use public transport

Take it in turns to be designated drivers Stick to soft drinks so you can concentrate on the excellent football on show

TRAMLINES BRINGS MULTIMILLION-POUND BENEFIT TO THE CITY AND DIRECTLY FUNDS OVER

Tramlines in the Community - Independent report shows 2022 event brought over £3.8 million to local economy with over £30k distributed by the Tramlines Trust including £10k given direct to organisations that benefit Hillsborough.

The Tramlines Trust, created in 2022, has given out 42 funding grants totalling over £30k with over £10k going directly to businesses benefitting Hillsborough.

Tramlines has now raised over £150k for charity since 2018 and donated over 350 tickets in 2022 to Tickets for Good, Sheffield Young Carers and other local charities. An independent report from Bluegrass Research and Sheffield City Council has shown at least £3.8million was generated for the local economy including a direct boost for the local cultural sector by funding over £500k to the Tramlines Fringe and free activities in the city centre since 2009.

Tramlines 2022 raised over £50k for charity which went to the Tramlines Trust, Hillsborough Primary School, the NSPCC and The Sarah Nulty Power of Music Foundation - named after the former Tramlines director and gives grants to people in Sheffield using the power of music to transform people’s lives. This brings the total raised since 2018 to over £150k with a 54% rise in charity donations between 2021 and 2022. Tramlines has tripled the number of charities supported since 2018.

The inaugural round of funding from the Tramlines Trust has seen £30,183 distributed to a wide range of businesses who enhance, educate or support the lives of local communities in the city. The Trust also funds projects and organisations that engage with young people, support South Yorkshire’s Art & Culture and support societal issues such as the environment, homelessness and health.

Over £10k from the Tramlines Trust has gone directly to Hillsborough. This includes the Hillsborough Hornets

Disability Football Club and The Burton St Foundation, a community organisation hosting over 2,500 people weekly including an adult social care provision. Other Hillsborough based groups include Age UK, Disability Sheffield, S6 Foodbank, A Mind Apart, The 393 Centre (Youth & Community Centre), Rivelin Co, Riva Project (disability charity) and more.

For the first time, Tramlines has commissioned a full economic report with Bluegrass Research which showed that the 2022 event generated in excess of £3.8 million for the local economy. This was calculated by looking at the number of attendees, local contracts, accommodation, expenditure outside the event, people travelling to the city, local talent performing and local suppliers.

As part of the commitment to keep the festival supportive of local music and diversity, programming of The Library Stage in 2022 was handed over to various Sheffield based organisations. Friday saw local venue/event space DINA put together an all female showcase with an emphasis on LGBT+ artists while on Sat, Pattern + Push (artist and comp and mentoring programme) created a huge line-up of regional rappers. vocalists, DJs and lyricists who are being supported to create positive lyrics that serve to inspire young people. On Sunday BBC Radio Sheffield were invited to use their BBC Introducing brand to bring a range of fantastic emerging local talent to Tramlines.

All this activity has not gone unnoticed and Tramlines are delighted to reveal that they have been shortlisted at The UK Festival Awards for ‘The Sarah Nulty Community Impact’ Award. The winner in this category will be announced during the award ceremony on Tues 6th December in Manchester.

The hotly anticipated lineup for Tramlines 2023 will be the next major announcement from the festival. Stay tuned to the official website and social pages for future updates.

TICKETS GO ON SALE FOR DIVERSITY’S SHEFFIELD RETURN

Britain’s most-successful dance group, Diversity, have announced their brand-new UK and Ireland tour, supernova is coming to Sheffield City Hall for two shows on 17 February 2024. The 66-date tour takes place across 40 towns and cities throughout 2023 and 2024. Tickets went on general sale last Friday 8th November.

Supernova follows Diversity’s sold-out Connected tour earlier this year, which combined playful, comedic routines with powerful statements on human connectivity.

Big, relentless, and energetic, the tour dazzled fans across the UK.

Diversity took the nation

by storm when they won the third series of Britain’s Got Talent in 2009 and have since sold out multiple UK and Irish tours, with countless television and live performances.

Alongside preparing for their brand-new tour, and in keeping with their progressive, innovative nature, Diversity are currently preparing to launch Diversity Studios, which will offer in person and live streamed dance classes.

Last month, Ashley Banjo was awarded an MBE for his services to dance.

Alongside choreographing and performing with Diversity, Ashley has been committed to educating people on

dance, becoming a judge on Dancing on Ice, and offering his expertise as a host and creative in the BAFTA nominated The Real Full Monty and International Emmy Award, Broadcast Award, and Royal Television Society Award winning The Real Full Monty: Ladies Night.

Ashley also had the honour of becoming a co-presenter at the Pride of Britain Awards last year, working alongside Carol Vorderman.

Jordan Banjo has also hosted a variety of TV shows, including two series of BBC 1’s Primetime and BAFTA-nominated show The Greatest Dancer.

Jordan along with Perri Kiely are also part of

breakfast radio royalty, presenting Kiss Breakfast every weekday.

Diversity’s illustrious career shows how they continue to innovate, grow, and achieve. Collectively Diversity recently won Virgin Media’s Must-See Moment of 2020 at the British Academy Television Awards for their incredible Britain’s Got Talent routine, watch here.

Diversity have also confirmed that they will be supporting anti-poverty charity the Trussell Trust**, which provides emergency food and support to people locked in poverty while campaigning for change to end the need for food banks in the UK. Right now, millions of people across

the country are facing a cost of living crisis as food and energy prices soar and families are feeling the biggest squeeze on incomes in a generation. Attendees on the tour are being invited to bring along food donations to the shows, where there will be collection points across the venue each night. There will also be collection

buckets for any cash donations. All donations will be distributed to people in crisis across the 1,300 food bank centres in the Trussell Trust network.

Clean Air Zone to launch from February and financial support measures roll out date confirmed

Sheffield’s Clean Air Zone will launch on February 27, 2023, with the roll out of financial support measures starting from December 12, 2022.

From Monday, February 27, 2023 the Class C Clean Air Zone will begin charging noncompliant vehicles.

Charges will apply to the following vehicle types that do not meet the minimum standards when entering the Clean Air Zone boundary:

• Taxis, including both hackney carriages and private hire vehicles, which are below Euro 6 Diesel or Euro 4 Petrol standards

• Light goods vehicles (LGVS) such as vans, campervans and pickup trucks and minibuses which are below Euro 6 Diesel or Euro 4 Petrol standards

• Buses and coaches which are below Euro 6 Diesel standards

• Heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) which are below Euro 6 Diesel standards

In light of the cost-of-living crisis, the potential incoming changes to taxi licensing in Sheffield, the current difficulties with buying a compliant LGV and volume of LGV applications expected to be processed, the Council has negotiated with Government to deliver additional temporary local exemptions from charges until June 5, 2023 for both local Hackney Carriage taxis and LGVs.

Private cars will not be charged.

Financial support launch date

From December 12, 2022, financial support to assist those affected by the charges will be launched. Eligible businesses and residents may be able to apply for financial support to

upgrade to cleaner vehicles.

The financial support measures will be available in the form of a grant, an interest subsidised loan or a mix of the two, details of the financial support packages will be available on the Sheffield City Council Clean Air Zone website Monday, December 12, 2022.

More information on the range of local exemptions available will also be launched on the Clean Air Zone website on December 12.

Cllr Julie Grocutt, Co-Chair of the Transport Regeneration and Climate Policy Committee, said:

“The Clean Air Zone is a necessary intervention to protect current and future generations in our city from the effects of exposure to NO2 emissions. While we are legally mandated by Government to introduce it, it is a scheme we completely support. We are committed to doing all we can to limit the public health implications such as permanent damage to children’s lungs, strokes, lung cancer and cardiovascular disease. We cannot ignore these damaging effects and must implement important schemes such as the Clean Air Zone for the benefit of our city.

“We understand that this scheme will affect people and businesses in a variety of ways and we have successfully pressed Government for extra financial support in an effort to support Sheffielders to make this transition, recognising the impact of the cost-of-living crisis on our city. As a result, we have secured one of the best financial packages of any local authority.”

DonCAster’s new City nAme is City of DonCAster

Doncaster

City of Doncaster has been confirmed as the borough’s new name at a Full Council meeting.

This name has been supported by more than 60 per cent of people who preferred Doncaster to become City of Doncaster, according to a naming survey.

The survey led by Team Doncaster shows that 62 per cent of people who responded, wanted the whole of Doncaster to be called City of Doncaster after the borough was named as one of eight places in the country to be granted city status as part of the late Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Celebrations earlier this year.

Doncaster became a city earlier this month and Their Majesties The King and The Queen Consort visited Doncaster last week to officially confer the status and bestow a letters patent which is an official scroll.

Thousands of local people and businesses took part in the naming exercise with nearly 12,500 responses. The exercise led by Doncaster Chamber on behalf of Team Doncaster, which is made up of public, private, voluntary and community sectors and oversees the delivery and achievements of the Doncaster Delivering Together Borough Strategy, was made available online and in local libraries over the summer.

Mayor Ros Jones said: “I am grateful to everyone who has taken the time to take part. Becoming a city is such a momentous and historic moment for Doncaster and we want to have a name that we can all support and get behind. We are delighted to have been one of the eight places in the country to have been

given this royal honour. It was such an amazing day in our long history when we welcomed The King and The Queen Consort to the Mansion House and gave them a truly fabulous Doncaster and Yorkshire welcome.”

Doncaster Council will also change its name from January 2023 to City of Doncaster Council (CDC). The first use of this will be seen on digital sites such as My Doncaster website and social media channels. There are no plans to undertake a wholesale rebrand of the council. The new brand will be used as and when replacements or changes are needed over time.

Driving in bad weather accounts for 1,292 injuries, including 4 fatalities, in the UK every year. And, as well as the danger it poses, drivers could also be at risk of fines and license points if not driving correctly.

New research has revealed some of the road rules British drivers don’t know. This includes 60% not knowing the recommended driving distance in snow and ice, and only 39% knowing you should use only fog lights when visibility is seriously reduced, which is a legal requirement and can result in points on a license and a £30 fine. Shockingly, half (49%) of British drivers don’t slow down whilst driving in heavy rain, which works out at 25 million drivers, while more than half (53%) don’t slow down whilst driving in snow and ice, even though almost 1 in 10 (9%) have had an accident in this weather. Here are 5 winter road rules many Brits don’t know: Keep your aircon on (and avoid a £1,000 fine!)

Driving in bad weather can mean your windows are likely to quickly steam up. Make sure you have your air conditioning on to make sure your visibility isn’t reduced, and you avoid a fine. Driving with misty windows could get you a £1,000 fine and three points on your license. Clear windows and lights (and avoid a £60 fine and points!)

It’s a legal requirement to have a clear view of the road before you set off. Not having cleared away snow and ice properly could result in a £60 fine and three points on your

license.

Leave 10 times the recommended gap in snow and ice

Well over half (60%) of drivers don’t know the recommended driving distance in snow and ice. When the roads are icy, they will inevitably be more slippery than usual, and braking distances can be 10 times more than on a dry road. National Highways therefore advises to slow down and keep 10 times the normal recommended gap between you and the car in front. It also advises to drive particularly slowly around bends.

Only use fog lights if visibility is seriously reduced Rule 236 of the Highway Code states: “You MUST NOT use front or rear fog lights unless visibility is seriously reduced as they dazzle other road users and can obscure your brake lights. You MUST switch them off when visibility improves.” 60% of driver did not know this to be true. Worrying, one in five (21%) drivers think you should use your full beam headlights during fog, which can be very dangerous.

Leave a gap of four seconds during heavy rain

National Highways says you should slow down and increase the gap between you and the vehicle in front to at least four seconds minimum during periods of heavy rainfall. This is to allow for longer braking distances due to slippery roads.

Over half (52%) of drivers weren’t aware of this.

5 essential tips for anyone needing to drive in bad weather conditions: Check your tyres: Tyres with very low tread

wear seriously affect the grip they have on the road and can make aquaplaning more likely. The legal limit is at least 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre. You may want to consider getting all season tyres too, which can be more effective at gripping.

Check your wiper blades: It’s important to check that your front and back wiper blades are functioning properly and if not then get these replaced.

Fill up:

Getting stuck in traffic in bad weather increases your fuel consumption so make sure you have enough fuel in your car.

Check for weather advice: Check out local news bulletins for any road closures or flooding that is affecting travel.

If the conditions are particularly bad, consider if you really need to take the journey.

Use dipped headlights in heavy rain (and avoid a £50 fine):

If visibility is seriously reduced due to rain and spray from roads, you should use your dipped headlights to help you and other drivers.

Hundreds of residents who live on the Dryden estate at Southey Green are due to receive free broadband at the end of November as part of a pilot scheme to address ‘digital poverty’.

The scheme has been drawn up after the national computer software company WANdisco PLC became aware of problems accessing broadband among residents who needed financial support, when it was involved with the ‘Laptops for School’s’ project during Covid lockdowns.

The new network aims to connect residents to education and employment opportunities, improve access to public services and promote community engagement.

Sheffield City Council awarded a Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) grant of £72,000 to The David and Jane Richards Family Foundation (DJRFF), a Sheffieldbased charity, to pay for the project. The area has been surveyed and the cables laid, ready to offer free broadband to 360 homes on the estate. The scheme is a

Environment Agency data shows that Yorkshire had the same amount of rainfall in September and October as it did over the whole summer, as reservoir levels rise.

The region is still officially classed as within drought; however, the increased rainfall has helped river and Yorkshire Water’s reservoir levels to increase significantly In the last six weeks reservoir levels have gone up by 19%, although they are still below the level expected for this time of year.

The water company has been working closely with the Environment Agency to obtain additional drought measures, which the company says when paired with the additional

rainfall, has helped raise the levels of some reservoirs. Granville Davies, at Yorkshire Water, said: “Reservoir levels are moving in the right direction – we’re seeing some significant increases week on week as the rainfall, drought permits, additional leakage activity, and support from our customers to save water, help them to top up. We have had more rain recently than summer months, but that rain doesn’t always fall evenly across the whole region – meaning that in some areas, such as South Yorkshire, reservoir levels are still much lower than we would hope. When the requirements needed to remove the hosepipe ban are met, we will let our customers know.”

partnership led by Lloyd Samuels of the SYNC Programme, Sheffield Youth; Neighbourhoods and Communities (SY-NC), David Richards of DJRFF, Sheffield City Council, Sheffield-based internet service provider Pine Media, digital safeguarding company Smoothwall and the Digital Poverty Alliance.

Pine Media is building the network with state-of-theart digital infrastructure and is creating several roles for trainee field services technicians. They will work under the supervision of experienced technicians, running cables, fixing blockages and developing skills in fibre-optic engineering. Community leaders will manage a portal at the heart of the network. This will provide links to community news, essential online services such as GP booking systems, details of educational resources, job listings and digital skills courses. Smoothwall is providing a firewall to protect the online safety of users. Councillor Richard Williams said: “This initiative has come at the right time, with many people struggling to pay for food and fuel and other essential items. The internet is so important to all of us and should be accessible to everyone. I hope that this communityled project is a success and that residents will see long-term benefits from this improved connectivity.”

The project will run for a period of three years, including a first-year pilot to analyse its effectiveness.

Cyber criminals will be looking to exploit shoppers during the Black Friday sales – an expert from Sheffield cyber security firm CSS Assure has warned.

People in the UK are planning to spend an estimated £3.95bn on Black Friday (25 November) and Cyber Monday (28 November) purchases this year, according to research by comparison site Finder.

Mike Wills said bargain hunters lowering their guards during the rush to bag the best deals are at greater risk of malicious threats.

He added: “In the run-up to and during Black Friday and Cyber Monday, many outlets will run promotional offers to encourage spending. This is a potentially lucrative time of year for cyber criminals as they know shoppers are less vigilant as they rush to snap up the best deals. Cyber criminals will no doubt be looking to take advantage of the vast amount of transactions taking place and the financial information being shared as a result. There is also an increase in promotional email traffic, which makes it hard to differentiate the real bargains from scams – presenting a heightened risk of phishing attacks.

With this in mind, it is important consumers take steps to protect themselves and their families during two of the biggest shopping days of the year.”

Password management Firstly, shoppers should change their passwords

right away. While this is a faff, it is the single greatest defence you can make to protect yourself against a cyber attack and will instantly make you much safer online. Currently, there are millions of emails and passwords for sale on the dark web, which have been breached by companies that have not protected people’s personal data sufficiently.

Cyber criminals can buy this data for minimal amounts of money and gain access to your emails.

They will look for social media accounts and online high street accounts and test your combination to gain access. From this, they can gather more personal data until they have enough to conduct identity theft, which could result in credit being taken out in your name or using your saved payment cards to make online purchases, for example.

Personal data breach identification

It is a good idea to understand whether your data has been breached so you can put in place other necessary measures to protect yourself. To do this you can use a free service provided by Have I Been Pwned. All you need to do is enter your email address and the site will tell you whether it is associated with a breach and if so, what other data has been stolen. If you have been breached, it is even more important that you change your password to break the chain. Next, you need

It’s ‘Mission Christmas’ for Hallam FM as host Big John at Breakfast appeals to listeners and locals to buy one extra gift to help thousands of disadvantaged children in South Yorkshire and Derbyshire.

The largest Christmas toy appeal in the UK, Mission Christmas is an annual campaign run by charity Cash for Kids and supported by Hallam FM. In 2021 Mission Christmas collected over £14.1 million in gifts and cash donations, which was used to make sure that 267,547 children and young people had presents to open on Christmas Day.

The cost-of-living crisis this year has seen many families struggling with rising food and fuel bills and, with many already choosing between heating and eating, buying Christmas presents is financially beyond them. As a result, the charity is expecting record levels of requests for help this year. And so, they need you.

Big John at Breakfast said: “Every child should feel the excitement of waking up to presents on Christmas morning, however we know for some families that after another tough year they are struggling to even get by day to day. That’s why we want to help out Santa by making sure that even more young people in our area can be given some Christmas cheer this year.

“People in our community have always been so amazingly generous when it comes to Mission Christmas, and so if you can, please just buy one extra gift this year and we’ll make sure that it goes to a child who truly deserves it.”

Supporters of the campaign can take their gifts to a number of drop-off points near them, including local Wickes stores. Simply head to www.hallamfm.co.uk/mission and enter your

postcode to find the drop-off point closest to you.

Supporters can also buy a gift online which will be delivered directly to the purchaser’s nearest Mission HQ for no delivery fee. Just head to www.hallamfm.co.uk/mission to browse the gift list. Alternatively, you can text ‘MISSION’ to 70910 to donate £10 and the Cash for Kids team will donate a gift on your behalf.

Cash for Kids works with thousands of grass-root organisations across the UK who support disadvantaged children (0 – 18 years). Throughout the Mission Christmas campaign, these organisations along with social workers, head teachers and the emergency services nominate families in crisis to be supported by the appeal. Highlighting their age, gender and any special needs, Cash for Kids identifies children that the Mission is hoping to support and what age groups may be struggling for gifts throughout the appeal.

For further details, including information on how to get involved or make a donation, please visit www.cashforkids.uk.com or www.hallamfm.co.uk /mission

a night with ricky hatton

There’s a great chance to catch up with Ricky Hatton next month when he visits Olive Grove Sports Club for a night of memories!

From his early days, to his fight with Marco Antonio Barrera (who beat Prince Nassen Hamed) as recently as November 2022, he recalls his problems with weight loss, ongoing battles with his mental health and his overcoming drug addiction.

Enjoy the chance to grab a photo with the legend of boxing, and take adavantage of the refreshments and drinks available at the bar!

The fun won’t stop there, however!

There’s a great after-party to finish the night, with the fantastic Madness tribute act upstairs to rock the night away until the small hours!

thriVing SheffieLd cLubS’ generaL Manager recogniSed by nationaL award

Earlier this month Sheffield’s own Crookes Club received the highest possible accolade from Club industry magazine, The Club Mirror. Maurice Champeau General Manager and Secretary of Crookes Club was awarded the prestigious Manager of the Year award 2022.

Maurice took over the reigns at Crookes Club in 2014. At the time the club was in a dire financial position and possible closure was imminent. Maurice was recruited with the specific brief of rescuing the club from bankruptcy.

Crookes Working Men’s Club as it was formally called started trading in August 1919. The club enjoyed huge success during the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s but as club land started to decline in the 90’s the clubs finances started to suffer. By 2010 the club was struggling from week to week to survive.

Club president Mr Peter Lonsdale said “We recruited Maurice specifically for his experience in rescuing failing hospitality businesses. Maurice had 30+ years in the license trade and we recognised his energy and experience was exactly what the club needed. In his first few months at the club, he proved to me and the committee that he had a wealth of innovative

ideas that when put into practice were expected to rejuvenate the club. I could never have dreamed that in the coming years the club would go from strength to strength. By 2017 Maurice had put us firmly back on the Sheffield map by getting the club to No1 night time venue in Sheffield on TripAdvisor. At the 2019 Club Mirror awards we received the prestigious title of UK Entertainment Club of the year. I remember Maurice telling me that he was proud of the award but for his this was not enough, He wanted manager of the year.”

The Covid pandemic hit the club hard and all the financial reserves that had been built up since Maurice joined in 2014 were used to keep the business afloat. Maurice said “ Following the reopening from the covid shutdown in summer 21 we were expecting business to be back on its feet again quickly. A spike in Covid cases in late 2021 all but wiped out our 2021 Christmas trade. However, 2022 has been an amazing year. The diary has been full all year and we’ve had the privilege of hosting some amazing events with live music being at the heart of our business, The jewel in Crookes Club’s crown is our amazing 500 capacity concert room, but the club is still and always will be

firmly rooted in the local community. Crookes Club needed to change, the club needed to evolve. We not only host some of the most amazing touring bands but regularly hold children’s classes, running groups, martial arts lessons, dance lessons, fitness classes along side our regular snooker and bowls. I needed to make the club a place for everyone. The award from The Club Mirror has humbled me. But I am elated by the recognition of all the years of hard work. The club is now exactly where I wanted it to be and bookings for events in 2023 and 2024 show that the clubs future is safe.”

The Owls strengthened our promotion credentials with a resolute win and performance against Shrewsbury and Darren Moore hailed the determination of his players to grind out the points.

Mark McGuinness opened his Wednesday account with the only goal of a game the hosts dominated.

The Shrews came out of a rearguard action in the closing stages but Wednesday held on for a vital victory.

Moore told swfc.co.uk: “Credit to the players today because Shrewsbury played a low block and made it difficult for us.

“But we plugged away and got the goal from the set piece and I’m pleased for Macca because he was outstanding today.

“Credit too goes to Simon Ireland, he’s been working on the set pieces and it’s always rewarding to see one of them come off.

“What pleased me the most was the doggedness of the team, they threw their bodies at everything when they had to when Shrewsbury came out.

“There were blocks, headers, tackles and a

determination to keep the ball out of the net. That’s a sign of the progress we have made as a team.

“Maybe we could have scored more but the most important thing is the win.”

Moore said his medical team will assess Josh Windass during the week after the forward was forced off late in the second half.

He explained: “We think it could be a groin injury but we don’t know if it’s a knock or a pull at this moment in time.

“We will assess Josh in the week and see where he’s at but hopefully he will be okay.”

The word ‘break’ in ‘World Cup break’ implies a rest, but the hard work is only just beginning for the Rotherham United players and the coaching staff alike.

In the summer just gone, the Millers flew away to Croatia for a warmweather training camp and proceeded to have their best ever start to a Championship season.

Despite circumstances changing since then, the boss Matt Taylor still firmly believes this time will be positive for the team.

“We’ve got a week away of warm-weather training, good facilities, a change of environment.

It will be good to get the group away,” Taylor told www.themillers.co.uk.

“We’ll try and get some team bonding in there, they don’t need it, but it would be great for myself and the staff to show our true colours in

terms of certain aspects of what we want moving forward.”

A notable absentee on the plane to Cyprus will be Chiedozie Ogbene, who will instead link up with the rest of the team a day or two later due to his international commitments. Ogbene received the call to once again represent the Republic of Ireland for their two friendlies against Norway and Malta.

Having just competed in two taxing international fixtures, Matt Taylor was keen to tell that not all players will be subjected to the same intensity.

“We have to use it for our benefit, get the players exactly where we want them to be. We will take the load off certain personnel, we will overload certain personnel.

“The main thing is to be sure that we’ve got a fully fit squad for our

first game back - which is Bristol City - and everyone at a similar level.”

“The players aren’t always going to be at their top, top level and their peak performance because they just haven’t had the six-weeks of preseason going into that.” insisted Taylor, “But we’ve got to try and get them as close as we possibly can and then keep them at that level.”

Though sneak-peaks inside the camp will

follow over the week, Taylor teased an overview of the plans for the squad in preparation for their return against a tough Bristol City side. “There will be a few presentations within the week, training time, and then we’ll come back here and do two weeks’ worth of work which will involve some game time - possibly in-house first and then against other opposition - and then it’s all focus on the next league game.”

United Women’s tough run continued in front of a record crowd at Bramall Lane as goals in the first and last 10 minutes of the game sealed defeat for the Blades.

In front of both a club and league record of 11,137 supporters, United were looking to bounce back from three defeats in a row, and could have had

a penalty inside three minutes when Courtney Sweetman-Kirk was dragged down inside the box.

To compound United’s frustration, London City Lionesses took the lead just moments later when Amy Rodgers dispossessed Rhema Lord-Mears and found the bottom corner from just outside the box.

The Blades though responded well and Lord-Mears tested Shea Yanez from outside the box and fired another one just wide, before Georgia Walters went closest when her sweetly struck effort slammed the crossbar and went behind.

Bex Rayner saw a lot effort blocked before the visitors got back on top, United goalkeeper Bethan

Davies making several good saves before the break.

The second half saw fewer chances as United did most of the pushing, but couldn’t force Yanez into action. Rayner fired wide and Naomi Hartley headed a corner over, but the game was sealed in the 83rd minute when Atlanta Primus was played in and rolled home a second into the far corner.

The head coach felt his side were second best at the basics as they lost their grip on the game at the JobServe Community Stadium.

With almost a fortnight until the next game, Schofield has an extended period to work with his players and was clear where he felt improvement was needed before the clash with Walsall.

Schofield on how the game played out: “It was a disappointing day. I think losing 3-0 in any manner is always disappointing. We have to reflect on where it went wrong and I’m quite clear on where we were second best. We’ll watch it back and review it but we weren’t good enough. “I think it was the fundamentals of football that I speak about all the time - winning the second balls, the contacts, the

duels, the physicality that the game demands.

“I thought we were second best all over the pitch and I think all three goals were as a result of us being second best. I know the strikes were of a high quality but in the moments leading up to them, we were fundamentally poor.

“The first ten minutes was scrappy but then I think we really grew into the game and we started to create some chances.

We didn’t have a shot on target all game, which is disappointing, but we were creating chances in the first half.

“We had a 25 minute spell. The manner in which we conceded and the timing of it is always tough but I was really positive at half time with the players. I felt the game was there for us but ultimately it wasn’t that way.”

On the dip in performance from the previous week:

“It was way off where we were at Grimsby. The fundamentals I’ve talked about were there against Grimsby.

“If you’re not going to be first at it, you need to be level, you need to be 50-50 and make sure you don’t come out of it worse than the opposition.

“These are the things that we’ll focus on. They are the moments we’ll review with the players.

“It’s a bit of a realisation of where we are. There’s been lots of positives but this was not one of those games.

“We need to reflect, realise where we’re at and realise there is a lot of hard work that needs to be put in from us to get to where we want to be.”

On defensive vulnerability: “Since I’ve come in we’ve conceded four goals, and three goals in one game

is not good enough.

“I build my whole way of playing football on being defensively solid and fundamentally sound which then allows us to play football the way we want to.

“We were second best at that.”

On the extended break between games:

“It’s a bit disappointing for us that we don’t play until December 2. It’s a long period.

“But we need to use this period to our advantage and instil some key points to ensure these performances don’t happen again.

“We’ll be back in first thing on Monday morning and the schedule will be the same as if we had a game on the Saturday.”
