ROTHERHAM REMEMBERS THIS WEEKEND Rotherham will come together to remember its fallen servicemen and women from past and recent conflicts on 13 November for the annual Remembrance Sunday commemorations. This year’s event will follow a similar format to 2021 and will be self-contained within the glorious setting of Clifton Park. The parade, made up of uniformed groups, veterans and key organisations from the armed forces family will depart from outside Garden House at 10.40am and make

its way through the park towards the Fun Park, past the Bandstand and down to the Cenotaph War Memorial. From 10.55am, a service will take place led by the Reverend Canon Phil Batchford from Rotherham Minster, with the Act of Remembrance, national two-minute silence and wreath laying at the Cenotaph War Memorial. Mayor Councillor Tajamal Khan as First Citizen of the Borough of Rotherham and Rotherham Council Leader, Cllr Chris Read will lay wreaths on behalf of the borough.

On conclusion of the service, from 11.25am the parade will make its way back up to Garden House where the Mayor and Deputy Lord Lieutenant will take the salute. Mayor Tajamal Khan said: “We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the men and women of our armed forces, past and present. Remembrance Sunday is always a sombre and moving occasion and it will give me immense pride to lay a wreath on behalf of the people of Rotherham in remembrance of the fallen and in gratitude of all those

who have served. “I know the contribution of our Armed Forces is very much appreciated by the people of Rotherham and I am sure people will turn out in their numbers as usual to show their support of remembrance events Clifton Park or in their local community. “We are grateful, as always, for the support of the armed forces community in assisting the Council in organising this year’s event.” To coincide with Remembrance Sunday, Clifton Park Museum will be

MAYOR’S FARES COME INTO FORCE ACROSS SOUTH YORKSHIRE

Passengers in South Yorkshire can travel for less as Mayor Coppard’s £2 fare cap comes into force on buses and trams, part of bold plans to combat the cost-of-living crisis. The price freeze brought in last week (1 November) on any bus or tram ride anywhere in South Yorkshire - comes more than two months ahead of a planned national £2 cap on bus journeys between January and March. The £600k boost from the Mayoral Combined Authority will see passengers save up to 50% on some trips and slash the price of over 700,000 journeys that cost more than £2. It comes as the Mayor sets out ambitions to fix the regions’ broken public transport system. South Yorkshire’s Mayor, Oliver Coppard, said “As we head into winter, I know just how many people

in South Yorkshire are worrying about feeding their families, heating their homes, and affording the very day to day basics as the cost of living continues to spiral. “Public transport is part of the solution. That’s why we’re not just introducing the £2 fare cap early here in South Yorkshire, we’re extending it to include trams. “Because while the Government’s temporary fare cap is welcome, it doesn’t go far enough to support the thousands of people in our region who rely on our buses and tram network. Alongside the Zoom Beyond fares at just 80p for young people, we now have some of the best public transport fares in the country. “We have a broken public transport system here in South Yorkshire but bit by bit we’re making things better for the travelling public. This is just another step on that journey.” Bus and Supertram journeys which already cost under £2 will not be affected. The move follows a £12.3 million rescue package from South Yorkshire’s Mayoral Combined Authority to protect bus routes and school services from cuts by operators. PETER KAY IS BACK IN TOWN One of Britain’s best loved comedians, Peter Kay, is finally returning to stand-up comedy after twelve years. The star of Phoenix Nights, Car Share, record breaking StandUp tours and much more announced last weekend that he was going back on tour with the star stating the ticket prices for his 2023 shows are the same as they were 10 years ago to help people struggling with the costof-living crisis. “It’s good to get back to what I love doing best,

stand-up comedy and if there’s ever a time people need a laugh it’s now. And with the cost of living at an all-time high, ticket prices are starting from £35. The same price they were on my previous tour in 2010” Peter’s 2010 tour still officially ranks with the Guinness Book of World Records as the biggest selling comedy tour of all time. Playing to over 1.2 million people. In 2017, the Bolton based comic cancelled his nationwide tour, citing family

circumstances and took a break from being in the spotlight. Recently though he has slowly returned back to public life and this new tour is set to be his biggest yet with two dates announced at the Utilita Arena in Sheffield on Friday 17th February and Friday 11th August 2023.

SNODGRASS I’ve been saying “mucho” more when talking to my Hispanic friends. It means a lot to them. What’s the difference between an African elephant and an Indian elephant? About 5000 miles. I used to think I was indecisive, now I’m not so sure. I went to the doctor yesterday and he says I’m paranoid. Who else has he told? My flat-earther friend decided to walk to the end of the world to prove it is flat. In the end, he came around. I’m annoyed because I had to work at the museum tonight moving suits of armour. I hate knight shifts. I just got hired at a company that makes bicycle wheels!! I’m the spokesperson.

Tickets for Peter Kay’s nationwide tour go on sale Saturday 12th November at 10am via www.gigsandtours. com and www. ticketmaster.co.uk

how to check your diabetes risk car de-frosting warning crystal peaks remembers A leading charity partnership is urging people across Yorkshire to check their risk of type 2 diabetes through a free online tool as shocking new figures reveal an alarming acceleration of diagnoses in younger age groups across the UK. More than 14,400 people under-40 in Yorkshire are currently registered as living with type 2 diabetes, a serious condition that is known to have more severe and acute consequences in people under 40 and, without the right treatment and support, can lead to serious complications that include kidney failure and heart disease. Analysis of NHS data carried out by longstanding partners Diabetes UK and Tesco has shown that cases of type 2 diabetes – historically associated with older people – are now rising at a faster rate among those under 40 than in those over 40. With registered cases of type 2 in this age group up 23% in just five years, the charity predicts the number of people in the UK aged between 18 and 39 living with a diagnosis of the condition could hit 200,000 by 2027. It comes as new research commissioned by Diabetes UK and Tesco reveals that people under 40 from Yorkshire are generally unaware of many of the symptoms of type 2 diabetes, or the devastating complications the condition can lead to. The research also sheds light on the impact of the cost-of-living crisis. More than half of people (57%) said they had

deprioritised their health as a direct result of the current crisis, with nearly a quarter (23%) saying they had avoided or put off medical checks. The UK-wide survey of people aged between 18 and 39 also found: • A worrying 72% of people in Yorkshire didn’t know how to check if they were at risk of developing type 2 diabetes. • 68% either didn’t know or weren’t sure what the symptoms of type 2 diabetes were, raising fears cases could go undiagnosed. • Few realised that amputations (35%), strokes (29%) and depression (27%) were possible complications of type 2 diabetes. In response, Diabetes UK and Tesco are launching a campaign across the UK to drive a million people to better understand their individual risk of type 2 diabetes by using Diabetes UK’s free online ‘Know Your Risk’ tool, or by visiting their local Tesco pharmacy. Anyone who completes an assessment using the tool will be directed to free advice and information on the help and support available to manage their risk. The campaign comes ahead of World Diabetes Day on 14th November. Clare Howarth is Head of North of England at Diabetes UK. She said: “This trend of rapidlyincreasing early-onset type 2 diabetes is incredibly troubling. It marks a shift from what we’ve seen historically and should be taken as a serious warning to policymakers and our NHS. If you’re under 40, you’re not immune to type 2 diabetes. It is vital that you check your risk now and that individuals,

no matter what their age or background, are given the opportunity to access support to reduce their risk of type 2 diabetes. We’re immensely grateful to Tesco for their support with this important campaign and hope it leads to huge numbers of under 40s in Yorkshire making that essential first step and checking their risk of type 2 diabetes.” While type 2 diabetes is often stigmatised as a condition that people bring on themselves, the risk factors are multiple and complex, and include genetics, family history and ethnicity, as well as living with obesity or overweight, among other factors. Social deprivation is also an issue. Factors such as income, education, housing, access to healthy food, as well as poorer access to healthcare, have been shown to be strongly linked to an increased risk of developing several health conditions – including obesity and type 2 diabetes. As a result, people who are at increased risk of type 2 diabetes are all-too-often less likely to be able to benefit from support to manage it. Type 2 diabetes has until recently been quite rare in those aged under 40, and while numbers of under 40s with type 2 diabetes remain a small proportion of total cases, many people – including healthcare professionals – don’t always recognise the symptoms, which include: • going to the toilet more often, especially at night • feeling more tired, because your body can’t get enough glucose in to your cells for energy • losing weight without trying • genital itching or thrush cuts and wounds taking longer to heal • blurred vision • feeling extremely thirsty Most people over 18 are eligible to use the free Know Your Risk tool

As Britons across the UK brace themselves for Autumn’s first frost this weekend, stolen vehicle recovery expert, Tracker Network (UK) Ltd, is urging motorists to be on their guard from unscrupulous thieves when de-icing their windscreens. Nearly £2.5 million worth of stolen vehicles were recovered by Tracker between November 2021 and January 2022, the peak months for vehicles to be ‘frost jacked.’ The crime known as ‘frost-jacking’ is usually an opportunist crime when thieves see an unattended unlocked car, typically with the keys in the ignition, as drivers wait elsewhere to thaw out frosted windows and warm up cars on bitterly cold days. Car owners need to be aware that leaving their vehicle unattended in frosty mornings can not only make them an easy target for thieves, but they also run the risk of their insurance company not covering the theft. “It can be very tempting to leave your car running and unattended on harsh frosty mornings, but we’ve come to learn that the risk is too great,” warns Clive Wain, Head of Police Liaison at Tracker. “Many people don’t know that leaving a car running unattended on a public road is an offence under the Road Traffic Act, termed as quitting. You could see yourself being fined anything from £20-£801 on the spot if caught in the act. But more worrying, whenever you do this, you are inviting criminals to help themselves to your car. And if it is stolen as a result of you not taking the necessary precautions to keep it safe, your insurance company could be unwilling to pay out on a claim if it is stolen.” However, not defrosting or demisting a vehicle is not an option. Motorists need to be aware they can be fined £602 and receive three penalty points when using a vehicle with parts or accessories in a

“dangerous condition”. This includes relying on ‘porthole vision’ - where drivers leave a gap big enough to see out of but not the whole windscreen. Clive Wain continues, “Our advice is wrap up warm and stay with your car when defrosting windows. We also always urge motorists to be extra vigilant around this time of year and use a combination of new and traditional methods to keep their cars safe. One of the best ways to protect a car is to fit a tracking unit, which can significantly increase chances of a vehicle been recovered if it is stolen.” Winter Security Advice • At home, don’t keep keys in a place where they can be seen or accessed from outside • Never leave the keys in the ignition, even if you are just stopping quickly • Never leave your car running unattended when de-icing • Always lock and secure your vehicle • Don’t leave belongings on show, lock them in the boot or take them with you • Do not leave technology items on display, such as satnavs or mobile telephones. Take them with you or lock them in the boot. • Never leave car documents or spare keys inside the car – this only makes it easier for thieves to sell it on • Park in busy or well-lit and attended car parks near CCTV cameras • If you have a garage, use it to park your car • Consider fitting a tracking device to help police recover your vehicle if it’s stolen

CRYSTAL Peaks shopping centre will fall silent on Friday November 11 as staff and visitors remember the people who lost their lives in two world wars and subsequent global conflicts. Members of the Royal British Legion will meet at 10.30am and form up in the Central Atrium where they will observe the Last Post and the traditional two minutes silence at 11am and then march on through the West Mall. There will also be a poetry reading by local children from Meadowhead school and the Deputy Lord-Lieutenant of South Yorkshire Sughra Begum will be in attendance. “The Remembrance Day Parade is a tradition that Crystal Peaks is always extremely proud and honoured to support and we are very pleased to welcome our veterans back again,” said Centre Manager Lee Greenwood. “We know that our visitors are always pleased to observe the two minutes silence and share this special moment of tribute and gratitude to our Armed Forces.” Volunteers from the RBL are selling poppies at various locations throughout the Centre to enable customers to show their support.

Pupils in Sheffield are celebrating after securing a place on a national leader board of active schools. Holt House Infant School is one of ten schools on the national leaderboard for the WOW Walk of Fame for October 2022. Holt House Infant School takes part in WOW - the walk to school challenge from charity Living Streets. WOW sees pupils record how they get to school using the interactive WOW Travel Tracker with those who walk, wheel, cycle, scoot or ‘Park and Stride’ to school being awarded a monthly WOW badge The Walk of Fame helps boost pupils’ engagement in WOW and increase walking rates at schools. With a few challenges scattered across the school year, the Walk of Fame supports pupils’ health and wellbeing while reducing congestion and pollution around the gates. This term, pupils at Holt House Infant School took part in the autumn WOW Walk of Fame Challenge which asked them to walk to school as many times as possible between 3 and 31 October. Pupils who live too far away

or are not able to walk the whole way to school were encouraged to Park and Stride by asking their parents or carers to park at least ten minutes away from the school. A generation ago, 70 per cent of primary school aged children walked to school, now it’s 49 per cent. Living Streets is working to reverse the decline in walking rates. WOW schools typically see an increase in walking rates by 23 per cent with a 30 per cent reduction in cars driving to the school gates. Nationally, 43 per cent of 5–10-year-olds are driven to school. However, just 4 per cent of journeys recorded on the WOW Travel Tracker by pupils at Holt House Infant School are car trips all the way to the school gates. Helen Haynes, Headteacher at Holt House Infant School said: “Pupils at the school really enjoy walking to school and the Walk of Fame challenge is a great incentive. I’m delighted to see that their hard work and enthusiasm has paid off and is being celebrated. The teachers here have noticed the positive change when pupils walk to school!” Stephen Edwards, of Living Streets said: “It’s fantastic to celebrate the achievements of Holt House Infant School as part of the WOW Walk of Fame.

THE SIXTIES SENSATIONALLY RETURN TO SHEFFIELD With a brand-new production for 2022. Join us for the musical phenomenon of 2022 with this festival of nostalgia as it returns to Sheffield City Hall on Thursday 1st December. The show with the definite feelgood factor will transport you back to that magical decade that was the 1960’s. Whether you come to relive your childhood memories or you just simply want to see what your parents have been raving about for all these years this is the show to see. These legends of the 60’s will deliver to you a night never to be forgotten.

THE TREMS (former members of The Tremeloes) Starting out as an English beat group founded in Dagenham Essex in 1958, originally called Brian Poole And The Tremeloes. The Tremeloes toured the world from 1963 through 1974. The Trems are still a massive draw in Europe as well as the UK today as much as they’ve ever been. They have the fantastic reputation as one of the most entertaining bands on tour today. Hits include, Even The Bad Times Are Good, Do You Love Me, Call Me Number One and their world-wide number one hit Silence Is Golden.

MIKE PENDER MBE (original voice of The Searchers) The Searchers were formed by Mike Pender and John McNally originally as a Skiffle group in Liverpool in 1959. As they went into the 60’s they turned to mainstream pop. They were rivalled only by The Beatles and Gerry and The Pacemakers. The band notched up 6 UK top ten hits with 3 of those reaching number one and spent 36 weeks in the top 10 of which 7 of those weeks were at the number 1 spot. Hits include Needles And Pins, Don’t Throw Your Love Away, Sweets For My Sweet, When You Walk In The Room.

DOZY BEAKY MICK & TICH Originally called Dave Dee And The Bostons formed in 1961. Changing their name to Dave Dee, Dozy Beaky Mick and Tich in 1964. In 1966 the band were in the charts for 50 weeks out of 52. In Germany alone in 1967, record sales outsold The Rolling Stones and The Beatles. Hits include Bend It, Zabadak and The Legend Of Xanadu plus many more. THE FORTUNES Hailing from Birmingham England, the band first came into prominence in 1964 with their hit single Caroline, which was used as the signature tune for

the influential Pirate Radio Station of the same name. Other classics include, Storm In A Teacup, You’ve Got Your Troubles, Freedom Come Freedom Go. VANITY FARE Formed in 1966 (often misspelled Vanity Fair, due to the similarity of the novel and magazine title) are a British pop/rock group famously known for such hits as, I Live For The Sun, Early In The Morning and the worldwide classic, “Hitchin A Ride” which scored the

band a number one on the Billboard 100 in the USA. The harmonies of Vanity Fare a renowned throughout the sixties scene which makes them one of the best vocal groups still touring today. The Sensational 60s Experience Sheffield City Hall Thursday 1st December 2022 Tickets available now from the City Hall Box Office or via sheffieldcityhall.co.uk

Follow Your Local Team Every Week In The Mercury BLADES STEAMROLL LEAGUE LEADERS THE POWER OF GOOD United are on a roll as leaders Burnley crumbled in the second half at Bramall Lane, with the Blades claiming a third consecutive success following away wins at West Brom and Bristol City. Manuel Benson’s first half brace either side of a goal from Iliman Ndiaye saw Burnley lead at the break, but four secondhalf goals, started and finished by Oli McBurnie, with Jack Robinson and Anel Ahmedhodžić also on target gave United the spoils. United made three changes for the clash against Vincent Kompany’s leaders. Stevens, McBurnie and Ahmedhodžić all returned to the starting XI, as Basham, Sharp and Khadra dropped to the bench. On a perfect afternoon for football, United started well with Muric looking decidedly indecisive from Norwood’s early corner and Robinson’s long throw, from a second early corner McBurnie beat Muric to the ball at the near post but headed wide. But on 17 minutes Burnley hit the front in fortunate circumstances, a corner

was only partially cleared and from Maatsen’s cross the ball fell at the feet of BENSON, he curled an effort towards goal and with the aid of Robinson’s head it beat Foderingham. United looked for an instant response from another corner with McBurnie again the threat, but it was Harwood-Bellis who should have done better with a free header at the other end from a Zaroury delivery. Stevens was cautioned for a foul that halted the progress of the lively Benson, but it mattered not as United restored parity on the half hour. McBurnie claimed the assist with a header towards goal from Norwood’s corner and it was NDIAYE who was jogging on the spot to apply the finishing touch. Foderingham was alert to deny Zaroury following a swift counter from the visitors, before Maatsen struck the crossbar, but in response McBurnie got a touch on Stevens effort at goal and only Beyer’s clearance denied United a goal, so it was a huge blow to concede a second just before the break as BENSON capitilised on a

Morecambe in S6 on Friday night by a 2-0 scoreline. Josh Windass and Alex Mighten were on target for Darren Moore’s side. Mansfield, meanwhile, defeated Barrow 1-0 on the road. Second round ties will be played between 25 and 28 November. Full details, including date and ticket prices will be announced in due course.

slip by Robinson before confidently slotting the ball beyond the dive of Foderingham. After the disappointment at the end of the opening 45, the second half got off to the best possible start as MCBURNIE headed home at the back post from a Ahmedhodžić knockdown after Robinson had scooped the ball into the area. Kicking towards the Kop, United sensed something and they were to be proven right. Ndiaye had a goal chalked off for offside following a flurry of corners, whilst Ahmedhodžić tried the spectacular moments later. But on 64 minutes, the Blades deservedly hit the front for the first time, from another corner. Ahmedhodžić powered an header against the crossbar, Egan won the rebound before ROBINSON managed to divert an effort into the back of the net. A fourth wouldn’t be far away, but Muric denied McBurnie twice before AHMEDHODZIC duly opened up a two-goal lead. Another corner wasn’t cleared, Osborn recycled and after a bit of pinball the Bosnian spun and

fired beyond a helpless Muric. That goal came in the 69th minute and five minutes later United added a fifth. Norwood’s ball was inviting, Baldock controlled only to be denied, but that man MCBURNIE scored on the rebound to cap an amazing second-half comeback. The Scottish international, along with Tella were cautioned before they left the field, as Cork always went to referee Bond’s notebook as the clocked now ticked down in United’s favour. Despite been well in control, Foderingham was called into action late on to deny Harwood-Bellis from a corner and Fleck duly completed the clearance in no nonsense style. Six minutes of added time were signalled as Brooks was introduced for his senior debut, along with Arblaster as Baldock and Fleck departed and the remaining moments passed without any incident of note as the Blades claimed arguably their best win of the campaign, Burnley’s first loss since early August in the Championship.

a measured, controlled performance. Everyone did what was asked of them and you can’t ask for much more. For the players who needed the minutes, that will do them the power of good. “Morecambe came here to play and credit to them for that because it was a good game to watch. We’ve had some teams come here and play deep with a low block but Morecambe came here to play.

“I think we had too much for them tonight and I’m pleased for the team and the individuals. I was really pleased for Alex, he has shown what he can do tonight, Josh has scored a fabulous goal and Tyreeq is getting better with every game he plays.” The manager went on to explain the absence of Cameron Dawson in the squad, pointing to an unfortunate incident in training this week. He explained: “Josh

Windass has hit a shot, and you know how he can strike a ball, and it’s come off the post right into Cam’s face. It’s a bizarre incident really. “So we’re following the concussion protocols and Cam will be out for seven days. “It’s a real blow for him because he would’ve got some game time for sure, but he was concussed and we have to follow the protocols.”

Boss Matt Taylor was once again left emptyhanded - despite an excellent showing from hims side - as Rotherham United were cruelly-defeated 2-1 by high-flying Norwich City at AESSEAL New York Stadium on Saturday. The Millers ended with nothing to reward their incredible effort against another side gunning for promotion to the top flight, when Aaron Ramsey’s goal - which

followed Ollie Rathbone’s equaliser - proved to be the winner after the visitors had taken the lead through Kenny McLean.

We were restarted with our press, we were quick to the ball, we moved the ball pretty freely, worked so hard to get back in the game and then 20 seconds later, the ball is in the back of our net. “When Ollie Rathbone got the equaliser it was well-deserved. “We were where we needed to be in terms of our positional play, in terms of our structure, in terms of the way we shifted the energy around

the pitch. But critical moments are absolutely huge and usually you get back in the game, you climb the mountain to do that and don’t give yourself another mountain to climb in relation to that. That was one of the few moments our middle of the picture was exposed, they had a shot on goal, it was slightly deflected and then it’s a goalmouth scramble which we didn’t see out.”

Danny Schofield says the challenge to his Rovers players is to move on quickly from disappointment in the Emirates FA Cup. Rovers were beaten 1-0 by National League North leaders King’s Lynn Town to end their cup campaign at the first stage. Schofield was disappointed with the manner of his side’s performance and has urged his players to react decisively from the defeat.

physical we want to be, the need to compete, winning first and second balls, intense with our actions. I thought we were second in all that today. “It’s difficult to take. Results are massive in any football game and in the FA Cup, if you don’t get the result you get knocked out. “I don’t think the performance was where it has been and I thought King’s Lynn deserved the win. “I’ve given the players a lot of praise from what I’ve seen in the previous performances but in this one we fell short. “We’ve watched a lot of King’s Lynn and we knew they were a very good team for the level they’re playing out. We knew they were aggressive and want to get up against your players and press in a man-for-man situation. “We just need to be better in those situations, much cleaner with the ball, sharper to make

movements, give options to players when they have the ball. I don’t think we did that and it invited the pressure onto us. We didn’t find solutions.”

reflect and react quickly from this disappointment. “To lose to a lower league team in the FA Cup is difficult to take but we need to make sure we move forward in a positive manner from this.”

WHERE WE NEEDED TO BE Speaking after the match, boss Taylor said... “I’ll be honest, it’s difficult to put into words. It’s two performances on the bounce and we’ve had so many positives to take but no points to take from it. We were where we needed to be today.

Darren Moore has taken a range of positives from Friday night’s FA Cup win over Morecambe. The Owls eased into the second round with a dominant, impress performance and are safely in the hat for Monday’s draw. Moore shuffled his pack against the Shrimps and was pleased with the overall display, individually and collectively. He told swfc.co.uk: “It was

Schofield on his assessment of the game: “It’s a difficult one to take. In the last three games previously I’ve seen a lot of positives in the performances. This one was not a good performance and I don’t think we deserved to win the game. “We speak about the fundamentals as we prepare for every game - how important starting games strongly is, how

On conceding the winning goal: “As soon as he came on the pitch we knew the type of football game it was going to be from then on. “We are constantly working on things like that in training - the set plays, the long throws, the fundamental parts of football. We didn’t defend that well enough today.” On addressing his players after the game: “I’m open and honest with the players. I tell them what I think and I expect that back from them. “We’re in this together. We’ve got to be honest and open and show our feelings. “Things were said in the changing room but it’s to try to progress and try to

On having the tools to play the style he wants to implement: “I think if you look at the players that were missing - Tom Anderson and Joe Olowu - they’re first team players who are pretty much established. I think we’re capable of playing football. We need to believe in what we’re doing. The players need to believe in it, which I think they are doing, and the coaching needs to reflect that. If you look at the previous performances in terms of what we tried to do in a short space of time, I think it’s been pretty positive. This one wasn’t but we’ll reflect and try to pick the bones out of it.”
