PM VOWS TO FIGHT AIRPORT CLOSURE

Prime Minister Liz Truss has pledged to do all she can to save Doncaster Sheffield Airport.

Last Tuesday, owner Peel Group said the airport, which employs 800 workers, would wind down from the 31st of October.

Speaking to BBC Look North, Ms Truss said: “I want to make sure that airport survives. I will do what I can, and I will talk to the relevant people.”

Peel Group said the closure was due to a “fundamental lack of financial viability”.

Ms Truss admitted she

was “very concerned” to hear the decision to close, adding the government was working with local leaders and Peel Group “to see what can be done”. South Yorkshire’s political leaders have offered public money to keep the airport operating into next year.

Responding to Ms Truss’ comments, South Yorkshire’s Mayor Oliver Coppard said: “I am really glad that the prime minister has said, again, that she is going to step in and help us save Doncaster Sheffield Airport.”

Mr Coppard, who is now awaiting contact with Downing Street, said everything had been done “locally and regionally” to keep the airport open.

He suggested the government could use measures under the Civil Contingencies Act to save the airport.

In reaction to the announcement that Peel Group are set to close Doncaster Sheffield Airport, South Yorkshire’s Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) Chair Lucy Nickson said: “We are incredibly disappointed and

saddened to hear that Peel Group have decided to close Doncaster Sheffield Airport (DSA).

Representatives from across South Yorkshire’s business community and the Local Enterprise Partnership have worked tirelessly with South Yorkshire’s Mayor, the Mayor of Doncaster, and other stakeholders to find a solution that would have seen DSA remain open and operational.

“A thriving international airport is key to our strategic economic plan. It connects our region to global trading

opportunities, drives investment and supports innovative growth plans. But DSA is not only an important economic asset to Doncaster, South Yorkshire and beyond, it also directly employs more than 800 people and has created thousands of jobs across the region. Our thoughts remain with the hundreds of people who now face uncertainty about their future.

“We will continue to work closely with local leaders over the coming days and weeks.”

ROTHERHAM COUNCIL AGREES fURTHER SUPPORT fOR RESIDENTS AS THE COST Of LIVING CRISIS CONTINUES

Rotherham residents facing financial hardship during the cost of living crisis will receive further support as part of a £2.4 million package agreed by the Council’s Cabinet.

Measures agreed include an extension of the free school meal voucher scheme and an expansion of grants to help with energy bills.

Rotherham Council has agreed that the funding be al located to the following:

£899k to continue to fund free school meals vouchers during the school holidays for eligible children, which will continue until Easter next year

£1.4m to expand the Council’s Energy Crisis Support Scheme

• £45k allocation to support care leavers

• £30k to support local voluntary organisations to support an estimated 300 vulnerable families over Christmas and New Year £90k to supplement crisis food parcels provided by local food banks

£25k to provide additional non-food products for inclusion in crisis food parcels, such as personal hygiene, sanitary and household products.

Already more than 1,000 households have received payments of up to £250 through the Council’s Energy Crisis Support Scheme, which helps residents with bills that have put them in an impossible position.

As a result of this additional funding, from this week, anyone eligible for the support will be able to receive up to £400 as a one-off payment. Households which received support in the first round will now be eligible to apply again, if they need to do so.

Rotherham Council’s Leader, Councillor Chris Read, said: “The current situation is having a monumental effect on residents in Rotherham and as we go into the winter months that situation seems likely to only get worse. That’s why we have moved quickly to ensure this grant funding finds its way to residents who need it most. There are a wide range of services and advice on the Rotherham Council website so if you do have concerns or worries, go to www.rotherham.gov.uk to see how we can help.”

The funding will ensure that almost 12,000 children across the borough will be able to access free school

meals during the Christmas and Easter holidays. Free school meals during the October half-term holidays will be covered by previous funding through the Household Support Fund.

Care leavers, such as young people leaving foster care or living independently after leaving care, will also be supported through the funding so that they are able to continue being independent.

Rotherham Council’s Cabinet Member for Children and Young People’s Services, Councillor Victoria Cusworth, said: “Our children and young people are some of our most vulnerable residents in Rotherham and I am pleased that Cabinet have agreed these funding streams to support families and individuals.

"It is my belief, as well as the Council’s, that no child should be made to go hungry due to the cost-of-living crisis. If your circumstances do change, please see if your children are eligible for free school meals by going to the Rotherham Council website.”

Funding from the government’s Household Support Fund Grant for the support has now been confirmed.

ONE of Sheffield’s best loved Festive traditions will be making a sparkling return this December.

The St Luke’ Hospice Festival of Light is the annual celebration that sees thousands of lights illuminate the charity’s Little Common Lane garden, all dedicated in memory of loved ones.

This year’s event will be held on Sunday, December 4, hosted by BBC Radio Sheffield presenter and keen St Luke’s supporter Paulette Edwards.

“Festival of Light is loved by St Luke’s supporters and for many it is the start of the Festive season,” said St Luke’s Head of Fundraising Joasia Lesniak.

“It’s a time for us all

to come together to remember and celebrate the lives of our loved ones in a very special way.”

For the first time in 2022 visitors will be able to enjoy food provided by local street vendors - with both vegetarian and vegan options available - along with hot drinks and other refreshments.

There will also be mulled wine and other seasonal drinks, with live music from Oughtibridge Brass Band and the Sheffield Hallmark of Harmony Choir.

First Bus will once again be providing a free Park and Ride service, with the first bus starting from the Abbeydale Road Tesco car park at approximately 4.30pm and the last bus

leaving the hospice at 7.20pm.

The Little Common Lane gardens officially open at 5pm, with the ceremony scheduled to begin at 6pm.

“We are delighted to invite you to join us in our gardens for a special evening to remember and celebrate the lives of the ones you loved,” said Joasia.

“It’s a lovely time to come together and every penny raised helps us to provide vital care and support to our patient.”

Yorkshire Ambulance Service has teamed up with the Resuscitation Council UK to support bystanders who have performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) at the scene of an incident.

Our Restart a Heart campaign encourages members of the public to learn CPR so they know what to do if they come across someone in cardiac arrest as it gives the patient the best possible chance of survival. However, we also appreciate that performing CPR can be an upsetting event that leaves witnesses with many questions and concerns. As 80% of outof-hospital cardiac arrests happen in the home, it’s likely that they will have done CPR on a loved one. A leaflet has been produced containing information about what to expect after performing CPR, common emotions and where to seek advice and support.

It will be distributed to Yorkshire’s ambulance stations for staff to hand out to bystanders at incidents. Jason Carlyon, Community Engagement Manager for Yorkshire Ambulance Service, said: “We know it can make a significant difference when someone starts CPR before we arrive on scene, but sometimes with the urgency to get the patient to hospital, our ambulance crews often don’t get chance to thank individuals or answer any questions they may have. Bystanders can be left wondering if they performed CPR correctly or worried they may have done something wrong.

It is normal to experience these feelings and we wanted to make sure they were left with information

which provides them with the correct support.”

James Cant, Chief Executive at Resuscitation Council UK, said: “Bystander CPR is so important - it offers a significantly greater chance of survival to a person having a cardiac arrest and we would urge people to step in and give it a go. However, we understand that in some cases, providing CPR can be a traumatic experience and we hope this leaflet offers the appropriate support needed. We ask those that have been CPR heroes to be kind to themselves, and to know they took the best possible action to help save a life.”

To mark Restart a Heart Day on 16 October 2022, Yorkshire Ambulance Service staff and volunteers will be visiting 138 secondary schools (on 14 October) and football stadiums (between 8 and 29 October) to teach CPR to more than 40,000 students and football fans. Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust covers almost 6,000 square miles of varied terrain from isolated moors and dales to urban areas, coastline and inner cities and provides 24-hour emergency and healthcare services to a population of more than five million people. The organisation receives around average of over 3,500 emergency and routine calls per day and employs over 7,200 staff. The Patient Transport Service made over 706,000 journeys in 2021-22 transporting eligible patients to and from hospital and treatment centre appointments.

Customers on Yorkshire Water’s social tariffs will receive an automatic account payment of over Ј70, to help with the cost of living increase.

While average water bills have stayed the same throughout the year, other utility bills have seen sharp increases. More than 45,000 Yorkshire Water customers will automatically receive the payment, which will be applied directly to their account. Customers will not need to contact Yorkshire Water in order to receive the payment. The payment is part of a series of initiatives Yorkshire Water is introducing in response to the increasing cost of living. The water company recently announced a Ј115m pot of support for struggling households.

Yorkshire Water currently has five financial support schemes that help customers struggling to pay their bill. Those already on the company’s social tariffs, WaterSure and WaterSupport, will be eligible for the Ј70 payment. The company estimates that there could be up to an additional 200,000 low-income households in Yorkshire could be eligible for help via its WaterSure or WaterSupport. Those applying from September will receive the Ј70 payment pro-rata for the remainder of the year.

Angie Markham–Nock, customer support manager at Yorkshire Water, said: “We know a lot of customers are worried about money at the moment and we’re seeing more people than ever benefit from our financial support schemes. We hope this Ј70 payment will provide some relief to households across Yorkshire this year. We don’t want our customers to worry about paying their next bill –our financial support schemes are there to help and provide some relief to those who need it.”

Luv2meetU, a friendship and relationship service for adults with learning disabilities and/or autism operating in parts of England and Wales, is launching an online service to enable anyone across the country to access it in a bid to enhance their overall health and wellbeing.

Luv2MeetU is part of national learning disability charity Hft, and will launch Luv2meetU Online in Yorkshire on 10 October.

Currently, there are in-person programmes in Bradford, Bristol, Calderdale, Cheshire and Merseyside, Denbighshire, Flintshire, Kirklees, Leeds, Newcastle, North East Derbyshire, Sheffield, Wakefield and Wrexham.

However, the new virtual service aims to give learning disabled people the opportunity to access a range of national virtual events so they can make new friends across the UK. Adults over 18 can sign up for just £10/ month to join any online activity they like, getting a chance to meet people and make friends with others nationally. They will be able to access approximately 15 different virtual events every week using a range of digital platforms such as Microsoft Teams, Zoom and social media including Facebook.

“Love2meetU will help people with learning disabilities and/or autism get out and about and try new things and visit different places,” explains Karen England, National Co-ordinator. “Hft recently published a report, entitled Lockdown on Loneliness, which found that nearly a third (36%) of people with a learning disability surveyed after lockdown said they felt lonely nearly always or all the time. “For many, feeling disconnected was a long-standing experience, with a third (33%) of those surveyed saying they did not feel part of their local community, and almost half also saying the pandemic had exacerbated their feeling of loneliness.

This goes to show how important something like Love2meetU is in combatting loneliness and helping people make new friends,” she says. “We’ve organised everything from supported leisure activities like bowling, walking, sport or a night out on the town to educational workshops. These might be on things like personal safety, relationships, mental health and wellbeing, as well as fun hands-on activities like cooking, yoga and dancing. And with Luv2meetU Online, we’re harnessing the power of technology to offer some really exciting and creative events, including a ghost tour, trips round the world, a virtual disco and arts and crafts mornings.” With the re-launch, Hft is on the look-out for new volunteers to join its ranks. There are opportunities to be involved in the running of the service’s events with a friend or with the Community Coordinator, as well as other roles in admin, fundraising and to be an ambassador for Luv2meetU. The roles include incentives to say thank you for the hard work, valuable time and support, and expenses will be paid so volunteers are not out of pocket. “It is an incredibly rewarding challenge and provides an opportunity to grow your skill set.” says Charlotte Narozanska, National Volunteer Co-ordinator for Luv2meetU.

Childhood Cancer Awareness Month (CCAM) takes place in October each year, with children’s cancer charities worldwide taking the opportunity to increase awareness of childhood cancer to raise vital funds to support their work

Around 1,800 children are diagnosed with cancer every year in the UK with 150 children diagnosed in Yorkshire alone. Receiving a cancer diagnosis for a child is devastating and is the start of a long and gruelling journey for the whole family.

Every September, children’s cancer charity Candlelighters looks to turn Yorkshire gold in support of CCAM, and this year is no different. This charity is campaigning throughout October, encouraging families to share their cancer journey. Doing so helps to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of childhood cancer, such as continued unexplained weight loss, increasing swelling or persistent pain in the bones, joints, back, or legs and development of excessive bruising, bleeding, and a rash which is just a few of the changes in a child’s body that can signal a problem, that they may need medical care.

One family that has suffered from childhood

cancer is the Lambert family who have shared their story. Mum Lucy told us “Ted was a lively three-year-old when he got poorly in 2019 and was diagnosed with Burkitt lymphoma. The news absolutely shook us. Before he was diagnosed, Ted had been suffering with sickness and then ended up losing his sight – becoming blind. The news that he had cancer completely turned our world upside down. We had to think of the practicalities of work, the dog and helping Ted through this all. We were told that Ted’s treatment would be aggressive for this form of cancer and that we would spend more time in hospital than out. We didn’t believe the doctors when they said this, but they were right. Ted spent the majority of six months in hospital, and a lot of that in isolation.

The support we had from Candlelighters meant we could give Ted our full attention and support him as much as we could through treatment, as well as cope with him being visually impaired now. They also gave us so much advice, especially when we were in hospital about all the practicalities and emotions.” Ted is now six and enjoying life at home with Lucy, his dad and Digby the dog.

Lucy is keen that people are more aware of the

signs and symptoms of childhood cancer. “It’s important that people know what to look out for with childhood cancer, as we weren’t aware that repetitive sickness was a sign. I understand it’s scary, but it needs to be discussed so people become more aware.”

For over 45 years, the people of Yorkshire and beyond have enabled the charity Candlelighters to provide care and support to children and their families as they deal with the consequences of childhood cancer.

CEO of Candlelighters, Emily Wragg, says, “It is absolutely heartbreaking to see the impacts cancer has on children and their families. The disease and its treatment take a terrible toll on a child, causing so much pain and discomfort and can leave them with longterm effects impacting the rest of their lives. We are continually humbled working with so many brave children, mums, dads and grandparents and we are so thankful that the people of Yorkshire donate and fundraise to ensure these children and their families receive the support they need to get through such terrible times.” You can give happier times to children facing childhood cancer by donating to Candlelighters. https:// candlelighters.enthuse. com/donate#!/

10cc ceLebrate 45th anniVerSary

oF not being in LoVe at the city haLL

10cc’s Sheffield City Hall show is almost upon us, The band take to the stage on Sunday 9th October and will be performing the hits which have singled them out as one of the most inventive and influential bands in the history of popular music. Marking the 45th anniversary of the release of their mega-hit I’m Not In Love, which landed the band a top 5 single in 10 countries and spawned a No 1 album in the US.

Led by co-founder Graham Gouldman, the artpop band are heralded in equal measure for their ability to craft ingenious songs that also resonated commercially, with eleven top 10 hits, and over 15 million albums sold in the UK alone. The group also have three No 1 singles to their name – Rubber Bullets, Dreadlock Holiday and I’m Not In Love. The line-up features Gouldman (bass, guitar, vocals), Rick Fenn (lead guitar, bass, vocals), Paul Burgess (drums, percussion) – both of whom have been

with the band since the early years - Keith Hayman (keyboards, guitars, bass, vocals) and Iain Hornal (vocals, percussion, guitar, keyboards).

In recent years, 10cc have toured worldwide, including Australia, Japan, Iceland, New Zealand, across the UK and Europe. They’ve performed at the 65,000 capacity British Summer Time festival in Hyde Park, and sold out London’s 5,200 seat Royal Albert Hall in advance last year.

It has been an eventful few years for Graham Gouldman. Not only is 10cc enjoying increasing success around the world, but recognition of his solo achievements has grown too.

Being invited by Ringo Starr to join his All Starr Band for tours of Europe in June 2018 and the USA that September, during which the band played three 10cc songs, elevated his profile yet further.

2022 is set to be another sell out year as the band take their inspirational live show back on the road, performing their timeless hits and more, and always with a surprise or two.

A few tickets are available for the Sheffield City Hall show on Sunday 9 October 2022 (rescheduled from November 2020 & April 2021), available from www.sheffieldcityhall.co.uk.

diSaPPointMent aS SheFFieLd FaiLS in euroViSion bid

Earlier this week it was announced that Sheffield had not made in through to the final two cities campaigning to host the Eurovision Song Contest next year.

Cllr Ben Miskell, Economic Development and Skills Policy Committee Deputy Chair for Sheffield City Council said:

‘Massive congratulations to Glasgow and Liverpool –the final 2 left in the race to host Eurovision.

‘Getting to the final 7 showed we really mean business here in Sheffield – loads of cities wanted to host this and it was amazing to see Sheffield and South Yorkshire get behind this bid. Over the last few months we have showcased the very best of Sheffield

– the love of music that runs through our veins, our stunning Outdoor City, and of course our people.

‘As the UK’s first City of Sanctuary we have said all along we were doing this in solidarity with Ukraine and its people. We have long-held and strong connections with Ukraine and they have been at the forefront of our minds throughout this bid.

‘The BBC have paid tribute to the passion, enthusiasm, quality and creativity we showed in our bid and we’re incredibly proud of the work team Sheffield and team South Yorkshire did to get us this far. Massive thanks goes to the universities, colleges, businesses, culture sector and of course our Ukrainian communities too, all of whom got behind this.

‘After the summer we’ve had hosting the recordbreaking UEFA Women’s Euros, we have some massive events coming up in Sheffield – the Rugby League World Cup, the Arctic Monkeys at Hillsborough and the UK Figure Skating Senior Grand Prix, for example.

‘There’s more to come from Sheffield and we cannot wait.’

United remain unbeaten at Bramall Lane and stay top of the Sky Bet Championship, despite having to settle for a point against Birmingham City.

Oli McBurnie’s second half strike looked set to secure a fifth consecutive home maximum, only for Troy Deeney to deny the Blades with 20 minutes remaining.

Boss Heckingbottom made two changes to face the Blues, with Khadra and Doyle recalled to the starting XI in place of the injured Ahmedhodžić (thigh) and Brewster who dropped to the bench where he was joined for the first time this season by goalkeeper Davies and Bogle.

It was a quiet opening 15 minutes, with Khadra’s low cross forcing Trusty to glance a header wide, before McBurnie rose highest from a right-wing corner, only to head straight at the

OWLS DUO IN TEAM OF THE WEEK

Ben Heneghan and Will Vaulks have earned spaces in the League One Team of the Week following their performances against Port Vale on Saturday.

Heneghan has also been named in the EFL Team of the Week following a commanding display in our 1-0 win at Vale Park.

experienced Ruddy. Norrington-Davies had to be alert to deny Chong a sight of goal for the visitors, before Longelo went into the book for a foul on Doyle that prevented a counter attack. Moments later, Doyle hit the top of the crossbar from a wide free-kick that had Ruddy worried, before Berge curled a left-footed effort wide of the far post with Ndiaye inches away from getting a telling touch.

Tempers threatened to boil over at the beginning of the second period and as a result Bielik and

McBurnie were cautioned by referee Bond. Having missed an earlier header, Ndiaye glanced another effort wide, after Hogan had failed to latch on to Deeney’s flick on. A double change on 62 minutes paid instant dividends as from a Norwood free-kick MCBURNIE reacted quickest to fire a powerful effort beyond the outstretched arm of Ruddy. The goalscorer received a warm hand as he was replaced by Sharp, but on 70 minutes, the Blues levelled as DEENEY timed his run perfectly

and kept his composure to beat Foderingham from close-range after Bielik had flicked on Chong’s left-footed cross. Norwood was then cautioned for a lunge on Chong as the Blades set about chasing the three points again. Hannibal was booked for a challenge on Baldock and despite the introduction of McAtee, United couldn’t find a winner, as Ruddy stood tall to deny Sharp and ensure his side left South Yorkshire with a share of the spoils despite nearly ten minutes of added time.

DOGGED, DETERMINED AND DESERVING OF THE WIN

The Owls overcame a difficult pitch and a dogged Port Vale to register three vital points on Saturday.

And Darren Moore hailed his players for a resolute display that showcased the other side of Wednesday’s game.

The Owls have forged a reputation for free-flowing football under Moore, which was not possible at Vale Park on an inconsistent playing surface.

Moore said: “We showed a different side to our game today because we had to. I keep on saying that every game in this division is

different and we’ve seen that today.

“Credit to the players because they kept their concentration in the conditions, they kept their composure and we dug in to win the game.

“We showed resilience, we had a doggedness about our game and we deserved to take three points.

“We now get ready for Plymouth, again, a completely different game and one we are looking forward to.”

decided the destination of the points.

He said: “I’m really pleased for Will, he’s bided his time and players of his quality, players of his experience, will always come good.

“He’s been excellent in that anchor role and the icing on the cake for him today was the goal.

“He’s seen the opportunity and taken it really, really well.”

Vaulks’ second half screamer sealed three points for the Owls who climbed to third in the table ahead of our midweek trip to leaders Plymouth.

The Team of the Week is decided by statistics from WhoScored.com, with every player receiving a rating out of 10 based on a number of data points.

Heneghan and Vaulks were given scores of 8.2 and 8.0 respectively to rank amongst the best in the division this weekend.

CALM HEADS SAW ROVERS TO ROCHDALE WIN CLAIMS AGARD

Goalscorer Kieran Agard believe calm heads helped Rovers on the way to the win at Rochdale.

Agard put Rovers ahead as the side recovered from failing to make count a strong start to the game, before comfortably seeing the game out after George Miller restored the lead.

Agard on the manner of the win:

“They made it really tough for us so credit to them.

“But we prepared really well, had a good week and thankfully we got the win.

“We know there are no easy games so we always prepare

MILLERS CLUb STATEMENT REGARDING NEW MANAGER

Rotherham United can confirm that the club has requested and subsequently been granted permission to speak to Exeter City manager Matt Taylor about the vacant manager’s position.

The Millers confirm that initial talks have taken place and remain ongoing.

At the time of going to press their had been no confirmation of the appointment.

Moore was full of praise for matchwinner Will Vaulks, whose second half stunner in the right way.

“We had a good start, didn’t get the early goal but it came eventually.

“They got the goal back and it’s just important to remain calm. These things happen in games and I think we dealt with it well.

“We dealt with it well after going in front and saw the game out well.”

On his goal:

“Sometimes they go in, sometimes they don’t. You’ve just got to keep getting yourself in there and thankfully the goal came.

“I knew Knoyley [Kyle Knoyle] would get his crosses

in. I just tried to hold back and he spotted me and got the ball in.

“I just had to get a good touch and finish in the bottom corner. I was happy with that.”

On Joseph Olowu’s injury:

“Joe’s an important player for us and we’re all disappointed that he had to go off.

“We’re rallying around him in the changing room.

“You have to deal with it.

We’ve got strength in the team to come off the bench and fill in nicely, which is exactly what Bobby [Faulkner] did.”

On the upcoming trip to Hartlepool:

“Again, we’ll prepare in the right way. There’s no easy games.

“We’ll go there and hopefully give a good account of ourselves.

“We go into each game wanting to win.”

On starting matches:

“It’s really good. Personally I worked really hard over the summer and I’ve waited for my chance. I always know that I can contribute and score goals, that’s showing now.”

NORTON-CUFF y EARNS MATTRESS ONLINE MAN OF THE MATCH AWARD FOLLOWING WIGAN CLASH

Exciting wing-back Brooke Norton-Cuffy has been named the Mattress Online Man of the Match as the Millers slipped to their first home defeat of the campaign against Wigan Athletic.

Brooke has been a stand-out player since he switched the

Emirates for the New York in a temporary season-long deal, and Saturday afternoon was no exception as he was in sparkling form once again.

The England youth international proved to be a thorn in the side of the Tics all afternoon, causing problems with his quick feet

and athleticism to glide past defenders like they weren’t there, hammering the Wigan box with dangerous crosses throughout the afternoon. Norton-Cuffy won the votes by a landslide over his two fellow nominees Dan Barlaser and Grant Hall –finishing with 83% of the 559 votes cast.
