Sheffield is one of 7 cities out of 20 who expressed interest shortlisted as host for the Eurovision Song Contest 2023. Eurovision organisers confirmed that the UK would host on behalf of Ukraine last month and Sheffield, in partnership with the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority submitted a phase 1 bid to be host. Sheffield has been shortlisted to apply for the next stage along with Birmingham, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester and Newcastle. Cllr Martin Smith, Economic Development and Skills Policy Committee Chair said: “It’s fantastic news that we have been shortlisted to host the Eurovision Song Contest “We’re2023. working with our partners across the region on the next stage of the bidding process. It’s an exciting step closer in our collaboration on this, and we plan to work with our Ukrainian communities and partners, bringing cultures together in solidarity. We know that Sheffield can put on a fantastic show and deliver international events at the highest level. With support from Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham we can bring communities and cultures together on a larger scale and really show Europe what we have here in South Yorkshire. “As with all potential host cities, we are thinking carefully about the next steps and taking time to consider the details. We expect the bidding process to be complete in Autumn.” South Yorkshire’s Mayor Oliver Coppard said: “Crack open the bucks fizz, Eurovision are making their minds up – and the only correct choice is Sheffield and South Yorkshire! I’ve previously said that Sheffield the choice host next year’s Eurovision Song Eurovision

Lewis building now Grade II listed

John

Last week Historic England listed the former John Lewis building, in Barker’s Pool, at Grade II on the National Heritage List for England. The decision comes after the Council applied for a Certificate of Immunity of Listing for building. Cllr Mazher Iqbal, Co-Chair of the Transport, Regeneration and Climate Policy Committee, has since issued a statement: “The decision to list the former John Lewis building demonstrates the importance of the postwar heritage of Sheffield and recognises the significance of the Cole Brothers store and the work of the City Council in rebuilding Sheffield following the bombing of the city in the 1940s. “Our purpose in applying for a Certificate of Immunity from Listing was not because we wanted to see it demolished, but to remove uncertainty over whether it might be spot listed at a later date. This now gives us a clear position with which we can move forward, and we welcome “Thethat. building has deep emotional and social value to the many people who shopped or worked there over the years. Whilst there may be some conflicting opinions over its appearance and size, it is very positive that Historic England recognise its architectural merit and historic importance in the evolution of Twentieth Century department store design. It is another symbol of the progressive, forwardlooking approach to development for which Sheffield is rightly “Thererenowned.are already examples of new life being breathed into fantastic listed Twentieth Century buildings in Sheffield such as Park Hill and Kollider in the former Co-op department store at “WeCastlegate.havereceived a range of submissions of interest in Stage 1 of public consultation, with several parties wanting to retain and reimagine the building for new uses, and others showing a preference for demolition. A department store of this scale is unlikely in the current or future retail environment but we’re really excited to now work with bidders to find a way to repurpose the building in a way that will re-establish the property in its rightful place as a key attraction in the new city centre that is emerging around it.” Listing marks a building’s significance and celebrates its special architectural and historic interest. It brings specific protection so that its special interest can be properly considered in managing its future. Listing does not mean that no alterations can be made - in the vast majority of cases applications to make changes to a listed building are approved. Sheffield City Council acquired the lease from John Lewis in January 2022.

Signs making drivers aware of Sheffield’s upcoming Category C Clean Air Zone will start to be installed over the coming weeks, as the council moves forward with plans to improve air quality and reduce pollution in and around the city centre. The signs and enforcement cameras will begin to be installed over the summer as Sheffield prepares to launch a Clean Air Zone in Spring 2023 that will charge the most polluting large goods vehicles, vans, buses, and taxis that enter the inner ring road and city centre. Private cars and motorbikes will not be charged. Financial support will be available to support people affected by the Clean Air Zone to upgrade to cleaner vehicles, with further details on the grants funding to be made available in the coming Cllrmonths.Terry Fox, Leader of Sheffield City Council, said: “We are clear that we need to act now to create a cleaner and healthier environment for everyone in Sheffield, but it is not something that the council can do on its own. This will be a big change for a lot of people, and the cost-of-livingcrisis we are currently facing is putting a financial strain on us all. That is why as we take steps to put the Clean Air Zone into motion, we are also calling on Government to go further and increase the financial support available to support people to switch to a cleaner or electric “Wevehicle.recognise that small businesses need the most support in upgrading and after listening to what people have to say we have increased our proposed funding as much as we can, but there is still time for Government to provide more help to those who might already be “Sustainabilitystruggling.isatthe heart of our plans for developing the city centre and the Clean Air Zone is an important part of our plans towards our goal of achieving net zero carbon by 2030. By reducing air pollution, maximising our green spaces, and making decisions that benefit our environment, we will continue to make Sheffield a great place to live for generations to come.” Sheffield’s Clean Air Zone will begin charging in Spring 2023. very few young people will have been vaccinated against MenB, which is the strain Ashleigh and Ryan had and that causes the most cases of bacterial meningitis in the UK. Common complaints such as a hangover and Freshers’ Flu are often given as reasons for a person not feeling too well – but we are asking young people not to simply assume this is the case. A headache and fever are also common signs of meningitis, which is why it is so important that young people should learn the signs and symptoms of the disease, look out for themselves and their mates and seek medical help straight away if they feel unwell.”

ROsE GaRdEN UpdaTE A sister’s quick thinking saved the life of a student who had fallen ill with meningitis, when she took her straight to A&E on their way home from university. Ashleigh Denton was 18 and in her first year at the University of the West of England in Bristol when she became ill with a headache and flu-like symptoms on a night out. The following day her sister Sophie drove from Oxfordshire to collect her but, halfway home, went straight to Swindon A&E as Ashleigh’s condition suddenly worsened. Doctors say her fast response that day saved Ashleigh’s life. “If my sister had tried to take me to Oxford rather than Swindon – less than an hour down the road –doctors said I would have died,” Ashleigh said. “It would have been too Nowlate.” Ashleigh, 29, is telling her story to raise awareness of meningitis and the importance of looking out for your friends and taking quick action if the disease is suspected, as she spearheads charity Meningitis Now’s ‘Look out for your mates’ student campaign, which launches today. The campaign is timed to coincide with the announcement of A-level results as thousands of young people contemplate their future. Meningitis Now is concerned that the combination of new-found social freedoms, the desire of young people to mix in large groups and a move to forthestudents,accommodationcampus-basedforwillpresentidealopportunityinfectiousdiseases to spread, putting young people at a higher risk of “Ifmeningitis.you’reat university and you or one of your friends is unwell or acting out of character and you’re not sure if it’s something small or serious, get things checked out,” Ashleigh added. “Don’t be afraid to go to hospital –meningitis can develop so quickly, from just having a headache to being at death’s door. . A report conducted in July 2022 highlighted concerns about the structural integrity of the building and concluded it had reached the end of its life. Sheffield City Council is working with the Café operator to assess the options for a temporary refreshment provision in Graves Park. The building was closed on July 28 due to safety reasons. Since then, discussions about the future of the building have continued and the council is liaising directly with the operator to explore the options for continuing to provide a refreshment offer in the park. The operator of the Rose Garden Café has been offered the opportunity to run a café cart or similar or a temporary container space. If they choose not to proceed, the opportunity will be opened to other interested operators. Ajman Ali, Executive Director of Operational Services, said: “The closure of the Rose Garden Café in Graves Park has been extremely difficult for everyone, and we know how important it is to visitors. Since the sudden closure of the building, we have been doing all we can to find a suitable closurethatinaretoalternativetemporaryforthecaféensurerefreshmentsavailabletopeoplethepark.Weknowthetimingofthecameasablow to the business, with trade typically increasing during the summer holidays, and we’ve worked as quickly as possible to make a decision on the way forward, including reviewing the original decision to close the building for the safety of the staff and customers. After assessing all the options available, allowing the operator the opportunity to provide and run a temporary facility was deemed the fastest, most appropriate way to reignite trade and provide a provision in the park. We are committed to featuring a café in the park long term. No decision has been made regarding the future of the Rose Garden Café building and we will work in partnership with the community on this. Work is underway to gather the relevant information and costs for every option and we will keep people up to date as the matter progresses.”

The festival also features the Kids Entertainment Village, featuring live comedy shows and funfair rides as well as fun games and activities. Once again the main bar will be provided by local business Thornbridge Brewery who will be offering a wide selection of both non-alcoholic and alcoholic drinks, including the return of Wentworth Festival’s own ale ‘Dancing Over Diamonds.’

Heather Small, one of the most recognised British singers of all time, is headlining the Main Stage at this year’s Wentworth Festival on Saturday 17th September 2022. As well as being the lead singer of hugely successful band M People, who notched up an impressive 20 UK hit singles, five albums and sold over 11 million records, Heather Small has also maintained an incredible solo career, most notable for the anthemic hit ‘Proud.’ Held in the grounds of Wentworth Woodhouse in Wentworth, South Yorkshire – the largest fronted stately home in Europe – Wentworth Festival was created by local residents Toby Foster and Steve White back in 2017. Having previously played host to successful chart acts Tony Hadley, Scouting For Girls, The Feeling, Cast, Heaven 17, Space and Go West amongst so many others this year promises to be the biggest and best festival so far. Organiser Toby Foster said; “We started Wentworth Festival as a great local event for local people and the support we’ve had from residents and businesses around us has been incredible. We’ve watched the festival grow from the ground upwards. Having survived the Covid crisis, which was obviously terrible for our entire industry, we’re now looking forward and the buzz around this year’s event is like something we haven’t experienced before. People are really ready to come out and have a great Co-organisertime.”Steve White commented; “The beauty of Wentworth Festival is we’re a small but very professional event. Our capacity crowd is just 5,000, surrounded by the most stunning outdoor countryside of Wentworth, so everyone has space to relax and enjoy the event. The infrastructure we provide however – everything from the staging and production to the quality of acts – are the same as you’d find at any large-scale national festival. It really is a unique experience.”

Beyond and hugely successful 90s boy band Five, performing all of their 11 Top 10 hits, including three Number One’s! The Teatime Tribute slot this year plays hosts to the incredible Bulsara & His Queenies, performing their world-class tribute show to Freddie Mercury and Queen. So good are this band they have previously been booked by Brian May to perform at the annual Freddie Mercury birthday celebration in Montreux. Brian May was quoted on his website as saying; “This remarkable band have their own identity – there are no wigs, no yellow jackets and no attempts to look like Queen. Instead, their whole ethos is to simply perform the songs to an exceptional standard.”

Also headlining the Main Stage this year will be The Farm and The Christians. The afternoon sees the return of Wentworth’s popular 80s & 90s Pop Party, this year featuring Baby D, Urban Cookie Collective, Brother WENTWORTH FESTIVAL PROMISES TO BE ONE NIGHT IN HEAVEN

United chalked up a point on the road at Middlesbrough, but it could have been all three having had the lead twice. Sander Berge’s early opener was cancelled out by Chuba Akpom, who then did the same late on after a owngoal by Ryan Giles looked to have put the Blades on course for an away win. Darren Moore’s triple substitution changed the course of the game as Tyreeq Bakinson came off the bench to seal Andvictory.Moore highlighted the impact of the trio and influence on the team. He said: “We always knew the substitutes were going to play their part because of the conditions. The heat was intense and credit to both teams for playing at both Sharp and McGree carded for their part in the disagreements after a foul. On 14 minutes, the hosts equalised with their first real attack. Some good work from Boro saw McNair release Jones and from his low cross AKPOM was unmarked and slotted into an empty net. On the character in the “We’vegroup: got good fitness levels, good people to come off the bench and a really good culture. “We want to work as hard as we can as a team and we keep going to the end in every single game. “We can mix it up. We’ve got different players who can do different things for the “Wegroup.feelcan score at any time in the game. “The ideal scenario is that we’re 3-0 up at half time. But football is not like that, you have to come through adversity at times and we’ve had difficult moments in the first few moment a ball was kicked – capitalising twice on the mistakes made by the Reading goalkeeper to catch him off his line, with the first instance leading to Conor Washington heading just over the barhowever the second time round, Ogbene would take matters into his own hands and bury it himself. Ro-Shaun Williams insists he took more joy from securing a last-gasp point for Rovers at AFC Wimbledon rather than netting his first ever senior goal. The centre half glanced home a header in added time to complete Rovers’ comeback from two goals down to earn a 2-2 draw. On how the game played out: “I felt like we were dominant today for large periods and we didn’t capitalise on that by scoring goals. “We went two goals down which was disappointing, Following on from the last week’s victory at Vale Park, another Irish striker was in good form as the Millers defeated Reading 4-0 at AESSEAL New York Stadium. This time, however, it was Chiedozie Ogbene stealing the headlines. We keep going to the end and we’ve done that two weeks in a row, getting two late goals. “It’s a good characteristic for the team but it should be a more comfortable game really.”

With nine remaining, minutesNdiaye was withdrawn and McBurnie entered the contest, but within a minute or so Boro restored parity again. A short corner was crossed in by Giles and after Lenihan won the first header, AKPOM was unmarked to head past Foderingham from six yards out. The atmosphere had completed changed inside the stadium and Watmore hit the post from Giles low cross into towards the near post as the clock ticked down. Seven minutes of added time were signalled and it was arguably Boro who finished the strongest, a timely intervention from Egan halted the progress of Giles and from the resulting corner Foderingham tipped over an effort from Lenihan, but in the end the spoils were shared. that pace and tempo in that weather.
