LOCAL FOOTBALL & SPORT // 7 DAY TV LISTINGS // 50+ NEWS & ADVICE

Cash for Kids wants to bring sporting opportunitY to every local child The dream of one day being a Lioness or a Commonwealth Games medallist is something that is beyond the reach of so many children & young people. For families who are financially struggling, being unable to afford kit, membership fees or subscriptions means their kids can often miss out. For those children & young people with a disability or additional needs, local sports clubs are often not set up to support these children in participating

in their sport. Cash for Kids, the charity of Hallam FM and Greatest Hits South Yorkshire has launched a unique competition which aims to break down these barriers. If you’re a local sports group or club, apply now to take part in the Cash for Kids Sports Challenge. Supported by the experts at Cash for Kids, Sports Challenge participants will have four weeks to fundraise as much as they can. At the end of the competition they’ll keep 100% of what they’ve

raised, plus we have £10,000 in additional funding available to win! All the funds raised will be used by the groups & clubs to enable them to welcome more children & young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to participate in their sport. Funds could be used to subsidise membership fees, provide kit, upgrade facilities or provide staff or volunteer training to support those with additional needs. Hallam FM’s Big John at

Breakfast said; “As well as the physical & mental health benefits, sport is so important for children in helping them make new friends and boosting their self-esteem. We want all children to be able to take part in sports and I’m so proud that our charity has launched the Cash for Kids Sports Challenge to enable more children & young people in South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire to get active. We can’t wait to see what all the local groups & clubs come up with to fundraise!”

Cash for Kids’ Charity Fundraising Exec Lee Fletcher added; “With the exciting Summer of Sport this year, we’re thrilled that we could be inspiring the next generation of Lionesses and Commonwealth Games superstars through the Cash for Kids Sports Challenge. We’ll be there to support the groups & clubs raise as much as they can, so they won’t be going it alone. We’ve got £10,000 in funding prizes to win, so every local sports group & club should apply to take part!” Applications for the Cash for Kids Sports Challenge are open now at www.hallamfm. co.uk/sports. Groups & clubs have until midday on Monday 12th September to submit their application.

CALL TO HELP DONCASTER CHOOSE IT’S OFFICIAL CITY STATUS NAME City of Doncaster or Doncaster City? Which one do you prefer? Doncaster acts, thinks and looks like a city and this year was granted city status as part of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Celebrations. Naming a place a city involves a detailed official process that Doncaster has to go through to confirm the name and status. Her Majesty’s Crown Office will shortly be issuing the granting documents and official scroll that will officially mark Doncaster becoming a city from November 1 2022.

In the meantime, Doncaster Council need to decide what the new city would like to be called and they are asking residents to help to determine what that will be. There are two choices the place can be known by either: City of Doncaster Or Doncaster City * (*in alphabetical order)

Residents, businesses, community organisations and Team Doncaster partners are being asked which they prefer via the Doncaster Talks website. You can also

JOHN REILLY and THE SMOOTH OPERATORS perform The Definitive Burt Bacharach Songbook Following hugely successful concerts both in Sheffield and Liverpool, including re-opening this venue with a sold out show last September, Britain’s finest song writers and session musicians are happy to be back, performing their ‘Definitive Burt Bacharach’ show in the Ballroom in Sheffield’s magnificent City Hall. It’s a sophisticated master class in melody, honouring Burt Bacharach, writer of one of America’s greatest songbooks for artistes such as Dionne

Warwick, Cilla Black, Dusty Springfield, Aretha Franklin, Elvis Presley, Gene Pitney, The Carpenters and so many more. Atlantic recording artist John Reilly fronts this concert with his spiritual and soulful vocals and with hand-picked world class session players who usually back artists such as Paul Carrack and Take That. Female vocals are elegantly performed by Miss Rachel Raynor and the Musical Director overseeing this dazzling non-stop parade of classic songs is Canadian pianist and composer

Lewis Nitikman. ‘Anyone Who Had A Heart’ – ‘Walk On By’ – ‘Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head’ – ‘Close To You’ – ‘24 Hours From Tulsa’ - ‘Do You Know The Way To San Jose?’ – ‘Alfie’ – ‘I Say A Little Prayer’ – ‘That’s what Friends Are For’……………. Hit after glorious hit !!

Why do German girls all have the same phone number? Every one of them I ask says 999-9999.

Tickets for the show on Saturday 27th August are available now from sheffieldcityhall.co.uk and artmusicltd.com or your can phone/text Elaine on 07918 556552

USEFUL NUMBERS

News, Information and Advice 5 tips to keep you cool joint water statement leakage This summer has been one of the hottest on record. August will be no exception, with the Met Office predicting the hot weather will continue. As Britons all over the country look to stay cool at night, experts share their advice to prevent overheating and to get a good night’s sleep throughout the warmer months. If you’re trying and struggling - to keep your body temperature under control at night, try these tips: Avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol and spicy food Strenuous exercise before bed gets your blood pumping and keeps your heart rate and body temperature up. Doing this before bed will keep your body feeling warm and will prevent you from staying cool as you try to nod off. Instead it’s best to exercise in the morning when temperatures tend to be cooler. Alcohol will make you feel hot. Remember the ‘beer blanket’? It’s the warmth your body feels as it tries to manage alcohol consumption. While your body is not actually heating up, it will feel like it and may prevent you from feeling cool and comfortable at night. Spicy food often contains capsaicin, which can increase your body temperature and interrupt your sleep. Also, eating spicy food before you go to bed may give you indigestion, making it difficult to feel able to drift off as your body battles discomfort. Practice mindfulness and meditation Anxiety can cause your fight-or-flight response, which can lead to night sweats in bed, which is a common stress symptom. Setting aside ten minutes for a mindfulness exercise before bed, such as meditation or journaling can relieve some worries and prime your mind for a good night’s sleep, helping you to stay cool throughout. Turn off unnecessary electronics before bed Electronic devices such

as computers, games consoles and TVs can get hot after use, leaving rooms, especially smaller ones, feeling stuffy and trapped with heat. It’s best to switch these devices off an hour before you go to bed to let the room cool down. This also has the added benefit of preventing the blue light from devices interfering with your sleep cycle, letting you drift off to sleep easier at night. Have a light meal for dinner - avoid heavy fats and carbs Eating a meal too close to your bedtime can be harmful to your sleep. The more food you eat, the more uncomfortable you may feel. Heavy meals tend to be high in fats and carbohydrates, which takes more energy for your body to break down. This could lead to feeling bloated and uncomfortable when trying to sleep at night. The recommended space between your last meal of the day and your bedtime is about three hours, which gives time for your body to process any food eaten. Opting to eat fats and carbohydrates earlier in the day, and eating a light meal at night, will require less from your body while you drift off, as it has done the work to break food down earlier in the day. Take a shower before bed It’s a great feeling to wash the day away and then climb into fresh bed sheets at night. Showers can help to regulate our body temperature, which can ease us into a peaceful sleep. When it’s hot, a lukewarm shower can cool your core temperature down. A cool shower can be more beneficial than a hot shower to help you fall asleep faster. However, a hot shower can still help as your body temperature will change as you dry off. Whether you prefer to take a hot or cold shower, try to avoid extreme temperatures, as they can negatively affect how you sleep.

Statement from Doncaster Council Mayor Ros Jones and Mayor Oliver Coppard. The Peel Group has confirmed in a meeting with senior officers from both Doncaster Council and South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) – that they will look at all options to keep the airport open. They would be willing to consider a range of options that could result in the maintenance of aviation operations on the site. There is a mutual recognition that the airport and wider Gateway East site are inextricably linked, and all viable options are still on the table for discussion, including the sale to another owner/operator. Each of the options will now be further investigated within the extremely tight consultation period Peel has set for its strategic review. The urgency of this work cannot be underestimated and will be conducted at pace and commitment. We have mobilised a number of groups including a business advisory board and our region’s MPs. We are now working closely with the Department for Transport and have jointly commissioned an economic impact assessment alongside our private sector partners to inform the best possible outcome for Doncaster Sheffield Airport. The region is also working with Government as we look for support with this nationally significant airport. Our work continues and we will provide updates when they are available. Thank you to everyone who have supported our efforts to see DSA continue as an aviation operation in Doncaster. We want to see the airport remain open.

Yorkshire Water has increased resources in its networks, leakage and repair teams, in order to save water from leaky pipes. The regional water company invested around Ј500m and reported a 14% decrease in water lost through bursts and leaks over the last five years. It is increasing efforts further in reaction to the prolonged dry weather – when the ground is dry it causes pipes to fracture and break more easily. Martyn Hattersley at Yorkshire Water, explained: “Our pipework allows us to move water around the region and keep taps flowing for more than five million customers. Recently, those pipes have been under a lot of pressure – we’ve seen the highest water demand in over 15 years and had very little rain, leaving the ground dry which can cause pipes to fracture more easily. We’ve increased resource in our field teams, so that we can catch more small leaks before they turn into bursts and fix the big bursts as soon as possible.” Yorkshire has seen a particularly dry spring and summer, which is having an impact on river and reservoir levels across the region. Average stocks in Yorkshire Water reservoirs were 51% last week, which is around 20% less than usual for this time of year. The increased activity allows Yorkshire Water to adopt a seven-day working pattern, so that teams are working round the clock to combat leaks in the region. The company has also increased the priority of leakage jobs so that the time from reporting to fixing will be halved.

bus service closure HCT Group has announced their Powells and CT Plus bus companies will close and services will stop running from Monday 8 August. Originally founded as Hackney Community Transport in 1982, HCT Group was established in 2008. It operates 19 services across South Yorkshire from its Powells depot in Hellaby, employing around 50 staff. Reacting to the news that Powell’s bus company will close and services will stop running, South Yorkshire’s Mayor Oliver Coppard said: “I know that Powell’s announcement of their insolvency will be a huge worry to our community, putting at risk people’s jobs, livelihoods and further undermining our region’s bus network. I share those concerns. At a time when operators are already failing to provide passengers with the services they need and deserve this is another blow. With the limited public money available to support bus companies, we had been providing Powell’s with additional levels of financial support this year. Their announcement this week is just another example of how the system as a whole is broken temporarily plugging the gap of at-risk services is not a viable longterm solution or a route to building the public transport network our region needs. Right now we have a broken system that allows operators to simply walk away, leaving taxpayers to step in and prop up services, so people can get to

work, school, medical appointments and to see family and friends. That’s why we are undertaking the assessment into whether we can franchise South Yorkshire’s buses, as a route to a long-term solution for our public transport network. In the meantime, it’s also why we’ve asked the government for a funding package that allows us to better support and maintain our public transport network. More immediately, I have asked officers to look into all the options open to us to protect services, including our legal position in relation to ownership of bus companies. People will understand that it’s a complicated process, limited by legislation in the Bus Services Act and a host of other challenges. However, I will explore any and all opportunities to protect and improve services. However, my priority is to move at pace to find operators to plug the gaps that have been created by Powells. I’m pleased to say we have had positive conversations with alternative operators and I’m confident we are in a position to fund other operations to provide some of the services that are at threat of being cancelled. We’ll make details available as soon as we have them.” South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority is co-ordinating work, with local authorities and other bus companies, to put alternative services in place, where possible.

rose garden future Discussions are underway to explore options for the future of the Rose Garden Café in Graves Park after it had to close due to safety reasons with immediate effect last week. A report conducted in July 2022 highlighted concerns about the structural integrity of the building and concluded it had reached the end of its life. Following further advice from a structural engineer, the decision was made to stop people entering for their own safety. A further independent survey has been carried out which confirmed the initial findings. Sheffield City Council has been in discussions with the tenant leasing the building and is committed to working with them, and the Friends of Graves Park group, about short-term solutions to try to ensure there is a still a café at the park this summer. Several options are currently being explored and it is hoped a satisfactory resolution will be reached. The long-term future of the building has not yet been decided and work is underway to gather the relevant information and costs for every potential option.

When these decisions are required, they will be taken through formal Committee routes. Cllr Richard Williams, Chair of Community, Parks, and Leisure Policy Committee, said: “I would like to stress that at this stage no definite decision has been made regarding the future of the Rose Garden Café. There are many options and factors to consider but we are committed to a café featuring in the park long-term. We are aware how important the café is to people across the city and further afield and we will keep people up to date as this matter progresses. We appreciate this is extremely distressing news for the tenant leasing the building and understand just how damaging this could be to their trade over the busy summer holiday period. The summer months are very important to such businesses, and we empathise with and apologise to the business affected. However, we have a moral duty to protect all of those who may enter the building and deemed it the right option to close it to the public with immediate effect.”

LET’S ALL MEET UP IN THE YEAR 2023 Jarvis Cocker has confirmed that Pulp will return for reunion shows next year and Drummer Nick Banks has also shared that more news will follow soon. The Pulp singer and solo artist told fans at a Guardian-hosted talk and Q&A for his new memoir Good Pop, Bad Pop that the band will regroup for 2023. It follows a 15-second clip shared by Cocker on Instagram last month in which the words “What exactly do you do for an encore?” appeared on screen. The line is from the title track of Pulp’s 1998 album ‘This Is Hardcore’, which hits its 25th anniversary milestone next year. The move prompted fans to speculate that a reunion was on the cards. At last month’s book event Cocker said that the post was “deliberately cryptic”. “It’s a line from ‘This Is Hardcore’… next year Pulp are going to play some concerts!” he said. It’s not known yet when, where and how many gigs will take place in 2023. However, Pulp drummer Nick Banks then Tweeted a reassuring message to fans. “Hey folks, unsurprisingly it’s all gone a bit mental on here,” wrote Banks. “Gig details will be revealed as and when.” He added: “Stay calm, hug your Pulp records and dream of going mental sometime in 2023.” The drummer then told BBC Radio Sheffield that the returning Britpop icons had a list of “potential” dates and venues in mind after a “couple

Long Blondes return for Leadmill comeback show Last month, cult Sheffield indie rock band The Long Blondes announced their return to live shows, 14 years after their last on stage performance. They’ve reformed for a handful of live shows as they continue to celebrate the 15th anniversary of their debut ‘Someone To Drive You Home‘. 2021 marked the milestone, with Rough Trade re-issuing their classic as a deluxe version at the tail end of last year. Kate Jackson (lead vocals) and Dorian Cox (lead guitar and keyboards) in June announced a handful of new gigs and have now also scheduled a huge hometown

of months” of planning – but that he was unable to confirm any details as of yet. “It’s not bad [news] is it?”, he told BBC Radio Sheffield. Asked if they’d be performing in their Steel City hometown, he replied: “It doesn’t take the brain of Britain to put those dots together.” He continued: “It was never a case of us all starting calling each other names and chucking our toys out of the pram. The band gets put in a drawer under the bed and you know it’s safe there and eventually it’s going to get resurrected.” The seminal Sheffield band announced their last reunion in November 2010 featuring the Different Class line-up of Cocker, Russell Senior, Candida Doyle, Nick Banks, Steve Mackey and Mark Webber. They went on to play a number of shows including a now-legendary surprise set at Glastonbury 2011 and a headline slot at Reading & Leeds that year. Pulp haven’t performed together since December 2012 when they played a homecoming gig in Sheffield and two shows aboard the SS Coachella Cruise. The band haven’t released new material since 2012’s stand-alone single ‘After You’, which was produced by LCD Soundsystem‘s James Murphy. Speaking to NME in 2015 Cocker compared Pulp to “a dormant volcano”. “You can think ‘wow, that’s dormant’ and then the next day your house has gone, because it’s erupted,” he said.

show at The Leadmill on Thursday 15th December. Pre-sale tickets available from Wednesday 10th August at 10am by signing up to their mailing list with general sale from Friday 12th at 10am. The original line-up was comprised of Jackson, Cox, Reenie Hollis (bass guitar and backing vocals), Emma Chaplin (rhythm guitar, keyboards and backing vocals) and Screech Louder (drums). Jackson said in a statement [via Clash]: “I can’t wait to stand on stage and look over at Dorian while we perform our songs again for the first time since 2008. Something I thought would never happen. “The reaction to the 15th anniversary reissue of ‘Someone To Drive You Home’ convinced us both that we had to play it live and we have spent the last six months reworking the songs as a duo using a lot of junk shop synths and electronic sounds. We’re so excited to be back.”

BLADES WINNING HOME START MOORE REACTS TO MK WIN An excellent first half display was the catalyst for a first win of the new campaign, as Millwall were brushed aside at Bramall Lane. Iliman Ndiaye scored early before Sander Berge added a second shortly after and despite a penalty miss from Ollie Norwood, the Blades were comfortably winners. Boss Heckingbottom made two changes to face the Lions, with Ahmedhodžić handed a debut replacing the Stevens, whilst Brewster starting in attack as Jebbison dropped to the bench. McAtee was named amongst the substitutes following his midweek loan switch from Manchester City. Having dominated the opening exchanges, United hit the front on seven minutes as NDIAYE latched on to a long ball forward and held off the

DALTON SMITH WINS title derby Dalton “Thunder” Smith put on a spectacle in his hometown of Sheffield, England, to defeat Sam O’maison on Saturday. Claiming the previously vacant British SuperLightweight Title at Utilita Arena Sheffield after a TKO meant derby victory over Sam O’maison in the sixth round. The 25-year-old was a picture of patience and calculation as he picked his spots against 31-year-old O’maison, earning a TKO in the sixth round with several

attentions of Wallace before firing hard and low into the far corner past Bialkowski. Ahmedhodžić was marauding forward from defence and only a last-gasp challenge from McNamara stopped Ndiaye from making it two. As United continued to pour forward in numbers, Baldock saw a shot saved by Bialkowski after good work by Berge, before the Millwall stopper was on his guard to save from Ahmedhodžić who had advanced threateningly towards goal. On 23 minutes, the Blades capitilised on an error by Cresswell to double the lead. Fleck seized on the defender’s misplaced pass and having round Bialkowski, BERGE showed great composure to finish despite the best efforts of McNamara. The Blades totally

dominance continued for the remained of the half and just before half-time, they were handed a golden chance to put the game to bed as Cooper fouled Brewster and Coote pointed to the spot. Unfortunately, though, Bialkowski guessed the right way to claw out Norwood’s spot-kick, as the half ended with Ndiaye taking aim from distance after Bennett was booked for a foul on Ahmedhodžić. Millwall started the second period on the front foot, but the first real chance didn’t come until the hour, when a free header from a corner was gathered by Foderingham despite a deflection. At the other end, Norwood took aim from distance, but Bialkowski just about clung on. The visitors then broke down the left, but Malone saw his effort headed behind be Egan, having cut inside

Baldock. With 23 minutes remaining, Heckingbottom made a double change as Sharp and Jebbison replaced Brewster and Ndiaye. But it Ahmedhodžić who was needed to make a crucial block as Bennett took aim as the game started to open up. Osborn was then introduced, with Fleck departing the scene. Clark was cautioned for a foul on Burey but despite an improvement from the visitors it was still United creating the better openings as Osborn headed wide from Sharp’s cross and the subsequent five minutes of added time passed without incident as United deservedly claimed the spoils, although Norrington-Davies and McNamara were carded before the end.

well-timed combinations. O’maison, clearly weary of Smith’s power advantage, was hesitant to open up against his younger opponent. Instead, his tentativeness worked against him as Smith was equally as patient but much more decisive when opportunities presented themselves. Smith knocked O’maison down in the third round and progressively made things worse for his compatriot as the fight wore on, with O’maison becoming increasingly bloodied towards the end of the bout. Things went from bad to worse in the sixth, and ultimately final, round as O’maison was knocked down twice quickly towards the end of the round to end the fight.

Smith is still a football fan and has been ardently backed by Sheffield Wednesday supporters from the early stages of his career. However, the 25year-old wants to get the whole city behind him as he hopes to bring more big nights back to Sheffield. Before the fight, Dalton declared it was his turn in the limelight after Naz, Nelson, Hatton, and Brook have claimed and defended title fights inside the arena. Sheffield’s most successful amateur boxer, Smith (12-0, 10 KOs), is now one of the hottest prospects in world boxing, claiming his first pro title at Manchester Arena in May 2021 – dominating Lee Appleyard and forcing a punishing sixth-round stoppage to earn the vacant English Title.

O’maison (17-3-1, 7 KOs), a former English SuperLightweight Champion, shared two close contests with Luton’s Kay Prospere in 2019, drawing the first and losing the second, before returning to winning ways with a points win over Serge Ambomo in May.

Dalton Smith, British Super-Lightweight Champion said: “Look, my main job was to win this belt. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do,” Smith said. “Whatever’s put in front of me by my team and [Matchroom boss] Eddie [Hearn], that’s who I’ll fight. I’m not one for calling people out. I’m not one for badmouthing. I get in and fight whoever I need to fight.”

The Owls emerged triumphant 1-0 from MK Dons on Saturday, with Josh Windass’ penalty enough to take the points. Here are some key talking points from Darren Moore’s postmatch press conference.

happened to his season last year. He’s played two games running, he’s building up to where he wants to be and to get the winning goal today was the icing on the cake for Josh.

ON THE WIN It’s great to win your first away game because it sets the tone. That’s what we did in the first half, I thought we started the game really well and it put MK on the back foot. We got the goal which we deserved and I am pleased for Josh because we all know what

ON AKIN FAMEWO He started the game superbly but he’s picked up an injury and we can only wait to see what the outcome is. It seems to be a muscle injury and with that kind of thing the physios tend to ask to wait 48 hours or so because it’s difficult to make a diagnosis before that. Like I say, he did

Rovers boss Gary McSheffrey was proud of the resilience of his team to come from a goal down to beat Sutton United in injury time. A Donovan Wilson goal for the visitors in the 16th minute looked to have been enough for the U’s, but McSheffrey’s determined group did not give up. Goals in the 92nd and 94th minute for George Miller

and Kieran Agard secured Rovers’ first win of the 2022/23 campaign. He said: “Early doors Sutton were getting joy out wide and won a lot of headers. The loose balls were falling their way all the time. “We made Kyle Hurst and George Miller go wider to get on the second balls to help calm the game down and I felt that worked. “Sutton are good at what

really well today and I see Akin as a project, someone I am really looking forward to working with. He’s a good size, athletic with a good left foot. We will keep everything crossed for him and we will know for sure on Monday.

because his positioning is spot-on. The one where the lad Kemp went through and tried to guide one into the far post, Stocko has seen it and got a vital hand to it. He’s had a great afternoon and credit to him.

ON DAVID STOCKDALE Stocko has showed all his experience today and for the goalkeeper and the group, it’s three points, a win, and you can’t ask for more than that. He’s made some top-class saves today and some others went straight down his throat but that’s

ON THE FANS We’ve had over 6,000 Wednesday fans here today, it looked incredible. Milton Keynes certainly know when Sheffield Wednesday are in town. We’re delighted they are going home with smiles on their faces tonight.

they do which makes it hard to deal with, but the lads dug in and got their rewards in the end. “I am delighted with the lads’ resilience and the ‘never die’ attitude. Last year when we went a goal down we never looked like getting back into the game, so to see that today shows a massive improvement we have made as a team.” Agard’s winner led to ecstatic scenes from

the home dugout as McSheffrey celebrated the goal. He said: “Once that second goal went in I felt a lot of relief. That is what football does. “I was delighted because our character shone through in the end. “For the last six weeks, this is the culture we have been drilling into the lads. Never give up, keep driving until the end and stick together.”
