LOCAL LEADERS ISSUE JOINT STATEMENT ON THE FUTURE OF LOCAL AIRPORT The statement was issued by Oliver Coppard, South Yorkshire’s Mayor as well as the leaders of Sheffield, Doncaster, Barnsley and Rotherham Councils after the viability of the airport was brough in to question...

Doncaster Sheffield Airport is crucial to South Yorkshire’s economy. It supports thousands of jobs, attracts inward investment, supports trade, and connects South Yorkshire internationally. The aviation industry’s suffered in recent years due to the changes brought about by Brexit and the continuing impact of

Covid-19. However, working with the owners of the site, operators, and government, we are committed to not only finding a means to save DSA but to establish it as a thriving airport at the forefront of South Yorkshire’s future. To do that, we need the airport’s owners – Peel Group – to work with us, to realise the evident potential of a facility with a passenger catchment of millions. To date, the Mayoral Combined Authority, the Local Enterprise Partnership and our local authorities have invested millions in the airport and the surrounding

Gateway East Development, and we have been working with government to further develop the airport’s rail connectivity. As well as loans totalling £8m, we have been in discussions about a further £20m loan to support the continued development of DSA. We are clear in our ambition about aviation’s place in our region. The closure of the airport would also risk limiting the potential for investment and development at Gateway East. Within that context, Peel’s approach to engagement with our region’s political leadership has been

disappointing. We now need them to both match our level of ambition for the site and engage with us to bring about the boost in passenger numbers we all want to see. We will be speaking directly to the Group’s Board and senior leadership team as a matter of urgency and we are committed to working with them to ensure the future of DSA, or finding an alternative private sector operator who can unlock its potential. There is also a role for Government. Following recent announcements from South Yorkshire’s bus companies, and the cancellation of rail services to both Leeds and Manchester, the government must now work with us to save our region’s airport. If this government are

serious about levelling up and committed to the promises made, both to the communities of South Yorkshire and the whole of the UK, now is their opportunity to demonstrate that commitment. DSA features in the government’s Flightpath to the Future plan, in which they commit their support to regional airports. In their own words, “Ensuring this network is supported is key to achieving the positive economic outcomes the Government is determined to deliver for the whole of the UK.” We wholeheartedly agree and want to work with them to deliver on that vision that we work every day to deliver; a prosperous South Yorkshire at the heart of a global Great Britain.

Sheffield City Hall last week announced it has been recognized by TripAdvisor as a 2022 Travellers’ Choice award winner. The award celebrates businesses that have received great traveller reviews from visitors around the globe on TripAdvisor over the last 12 months. Dom Stokes, Head of Live Events and Venues at Sheffield City Trust said: “Despite all the challenges thrown at us, the whole team at Sheffield City Hall has worked incredibly hard this past year to provide the best possible service and experiences to customers visiting a diverse variety of shows and events. John Wilmot, CEO of LeaseLoco, offers advice to car drivers to get the most from their air con today: “Turning on your A/C can cost you up to 10% in extra fuel consumption, so make sure you’re getting the most from it when it’s being used in this exceptionally hot weather.” John Wilmot’s advice to car drivers: Don’t pre-cool Don’t turn your air con up as soon as you get into your car as this simply recirculates the hot air while the air con tries to cool it. Your air con will work much better when you’re actually driving and the engine is working harder. Open the windows Instead of turning the A/C on when you first get in your vehicle, lower the windows first and let some of the heat escape. The air con will have less work to do in order to get your car to the temperature you want. Turn on the fan Give you air con a helping hand by turning up the fan to force hot air out of the car. If you have rear seat passengers then open the rear windows not the front ones, as the fans will force air out of the front of the car, leaving the air in the back hot and stagnant. Set temperature low By setting the lowest temperature and adjusting the fan, this will ensure the air con works more efficiently and will dry out the air less. Don’t recirculate Turn off the recirculation mode while you introduce fresh cold air, because this mode moves the existing hot air around the car. Everyone upfront might be cool but

the air in the back of the car can get stale and hot. Close the windows Once you’re driving and you turn the air con on, don’t keep the windows open because you’ll be pumping cooled air outside and wasting fuel. Point the jets upwards The cold air will spread around the car faster and more evenly if you point the jets at the roof - and it will cool the car more effectively. With a car full of passengers this will ensure everyone is nice and cool - and not just the driver and front passenger. Use the climate control If your A/C has a climate control function, simply hit the button and let it get on with what it’s designed for, which is regulating the fans and temperature settings to make sure your car is at the optimal temperature. A/C not working If your A/C is not keeping the car cool then it could be low on coolant, or has some other underlying problem. It’s best to take it into a garage to have it looked at. The last thing you want is to not have A/C when you have a long drive ahead of you this summer. Refresh coolant Nothing lasts forever and it’s the same with A/C coolant. The coolant used by the A/C system needs to be refreshed regularly, with most manufacturers recommending a refresh every two years. Check your filters It’s worth checking the cabin air filters when you have a chance to make sure they’re clean and not clogged up with dirt. Dirty air filters will prevent optimal airflow.

The Khan Review was released in June 2022. It was created by Dr Javed Khan OBE on the government’s wish to review the government’s current tobacco policies, the support available for those wanting to quit, and if the government will hit its target to make England smoke-free by 2030. However, the review did not make for positive reading. It found that the government would miss its target by seven years, with the country’s poorest areas not hitting the target until 2044! Failure to reach this target by 2030 will mean many people will die unnecessarily, and this pain will be hardest felt in most deprived communities. Around 20% of all cases of pancreatic cancer have a direct link to smoking, and current smokers have a 66% increased risk of being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. However, by stopping smoking, an individual can reduce their risk by 26%, with some research suggesting that the increased risk caused by smoking can almost be reversed on average 20 years after quitting. Pancreatic cancer is the deadliest of all the common cancers, and anything that can be done to reduce the risk of developing the disease will save lives. This is why in 2019, Pancreatic Cancer Action welcomed the government’s commitment to making England smoke-free by 2030. To have any chance of making England smoke-free by 2030, radical change is needed to support people to quit

and stop new people from starting smoking. Pancreatic Cancer Action full supports the recommendations raised in Khan Review to help England meet the 2030 smoke-free target. These are direct asks of the government with regards to funding, legislation and policy, including these four critical recommendations: • Urgently invest £125 million per year into a comprehensive smokefree 2030 program. Options to include a ‘polluter pays’ levy. • Increase the age of sale by one year, every year. • Offer vaping as a substitute for smoking, alongside accurate information on the benefits of switching, including to healthcare professionals. • For the NHS to prioritise further action to stop people from smoking by providing support and treatment across all its services, including primary care. Joe Kirwin, said: replaced by the former Brexit Secretary, Steve Barclay. As Steve Barclay settles into this new role, the charity urges him and the government to act now, to implement the Khan Review and not allow it to be postponed amidst the upheaval of Westminster. Cancer will not wait for the “right time”, so neither should the government to bring these recommendations to fruition. Every day, 29 people are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, and 26 people die from it. This number will rise if no change is made to control tobacco use in England.

tramlines clean-up Tramlines returns to Sheffield next weekend and the teams at Streets Ahead will be working around the clock to keep the city clean and tidy over the action-packed weekend. With thousands of music lovers expected to descend on Sheffield between Friday 22 to Sunday 24 July, teams working for the council’s highways contractor, Amey, are preparing for an increase in footfall across the city. The festival, one of the biggest in Europe, holds a special place in the city’s heart. It features performances not only from over 70 acts across 5 stages of music, arts and comedy, and showcases local, handpicked foods, as well as craft ales at their very own pub, The Open Arms. As always, there will be something for everyone, with the event celebrating local talent and creativity in Sheffield. Last year, Streets Ahead collected approximately six tonnes of litter over the course of the weekend and with more bins and litter pickers placed around key festival sites, it’s hoped that revellers will remember to dispose of their rubbish in the right way; keeping areas clean for everyone to enjoy. Kieron King at Streets Ahead says: “Tramlines is always a big challenge for our street

cleansing teams but we have tried and tested plans in place, so we’re confident we can handle the extra waste that will be created over the busy weekend.” With several events being held in the city, including Bassfest Summer Festival and the Pollen Market, as well as the UEFA Women’s Euros before the festival starts, there are already extra wheelie bins in place for visitors to make use of. Kieron continues: “Just like last year, we’ll have more operatives than usual working in the city centre, from 4am to 7pm on Saturday and Sunday, together with an extra 20 wheelie bins and large 240 litre and 1100 litre bins that we’ll put in place on the Friday morning before the Tramlines Fringe events begin. Whilst our teams will be working across the city centre that weekend, we do ask people to be considerate, and put their litter into one of the many extra bins so that everyone can enjoy themselves in a safe and clean environment.” There are similar plans in place for the streets surrounding Hillsborough Park with the teams regularly emptying litter bins and picking up litter on adjacent streets, shop sites and at nearby bus and tram stops. Mechanical sweepers will also be used to keep the streets as litter free as possible.

The Customer Service Team will also make arrangements for parents who need to take children home and wish to return to site on their

own later, or alternatively pick up their children from school and bring them into the festival. Families don't need to get in touch ahead of the event to make re-entry arrangements, however we do understand attendees may have queries so please get in touch on info@tramlines.org.uk and not through our access email address. Please be aware, those permitted to re-enter the festival will be able to do so once per day, those who re-enter will be subject to the same entrance procedures as first arrival and will have to return to the festival before the gates close for all ticket holders at 19:30 each day.

All Food Traders, Merchandise Vendors and Fairground rides will be accepting cash and card payments, there will be an ATM Machine at the Festival should you need to withdraw money. ID - If you are under the age of 16 you will not be allowed entry into the festival without a responsible adult (21+). To prove you are 16 or older you are able to bring a photocopy of your passport. We operate a strict ‘Challenge 25’ policy at all bars. Passport, Driver’s Licence, Validate UK or Citizen Card are accepted. Please note: Photocopies will not be accepted as a form of ID to purchase alcohol. REUSABLE WATER BOTTLE - Remember to keep hydrated. There are plenty of water points inside the festival. You are welcome to bring your own refillable water bottle , please make sure it is empty on your arrival to the Festival. Alternatively, you can bring a sealed 500ml water bottle. SUITABLE CLOTHING - The weather is constantly changing. Please check the forecast and dress suitably for the weather.

WHAT NOT TO BRING BAGS - WE ADVISE YOU NOT TO BRING BAGS - If absolutely necessary ensure they are no larger than an A4 piece of paper. Please understand that bringing a bag will lead you to experience increased queueing time. Expect to be searched. FOOD/DRINK - No food or drink is permitted (with the exception of a sealed 500ml water bottle and baby food). There are bars and lots of food options including plenty for vegetarians, vegans, kids meals and the likes. CHAIRS - Seats and chairs of any kind are not permitted into the festival. There will be plenty of seating inside the festival should you wish to sit down during the day. ALCOHOL - Please don't bring any form of alcohol with you, any alcohol found will be confiscated at the gates. Drinking is not permitted in the queues. DRUGS - As with anywhere else in the UK, it is illegal to buy, sell or take drugs at Tramlines. We work with our security teams and South Yorkshire Police to prevent drugs entering the event. All drugs are potentially dangerous; there are no harmless drugs. The only way to avoid risks is not to take drugs at all. This also goes for psychoactive substances (formerly known as ‘legal highs’). If at the point of search anyone is found to be in possession of drugs, legal highs, pyros or weapons, our policy is that you will be refused entry and may be arrested.

Please don’t ruin your Tramlines experience before it gets started. Ahead of the festival we are encouraging everyone to read through the great advice shared by Festival Safe.

TRAMLINES APP Want to plan your festival weekend at Tramlines Festival before you arrive? Now you can. The official Tramlines Festival 2022 mobile app is now available for download from the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store - it's completely free! village. It was also the location of the seventh climb of the stage, the Category 4 Côte de Bradfield. It was 1 kilometre (0.62 mi) long at an average gradient of 7.4%. Bradfield is one of the largest parishes in England, and covers extensive moor and agricultural land around the Damflask Reservoir, Dale Dike Reservoir, Strines Reservoir, and Agden Reservoirs, including the Bradfield, Midhope, and Broomhead moors and eastern parts of the Howden moors. The western end of the parish reaches to the upper parts of the Upper Derwent Valley with part of its boundary forming Yorkshire’s border with Derbyshire. Low Bradfield is less historic, having been largely destroyed in the Great Sheffield flood of 1864. The parish extends across the City of Sheffield electoral wards of Stocksbridge and Upper Don and Stannington Ward, and covers more than a third of the land area of Sheffield City Council.

FOCUS ON HILLSBOROUGH Wadsley Bridge WMC

FOCUS ON HILLSBOROUGH La Plata Social Club

Who says Clubland is not what it was? Pay a visit to a true giant of the entertainment scene (for over 100 years and still going strong!) Wadsley Bridge Club is a great example of how a thriving club can play a key role in serving its members and the wider local community. Call in almost any day of the week and there is usually some kind of activity for the locals to enjoy – including Slimming World and dance classes for all – there are even allotments in the grounds growing fresh organic produce that can be bought at really great prices! Wadsley Bridge remains a leading venue for top quality live entertainment, and features many of the top acts and live bands from around the country every weekend, as well as many special events offering the opportunity to see many shows not usually available in Clubland. You can also enjoy a large variety of drinks available at some of the very lowest prices anywhere around. Then there’s Sky Sports and BT Sport, three full size snooker tables and a darts room. For your own special event, there is not one but two function rooms and a marquee provided free, with the option of on-site catering provided by the club itself. So why not visit Wadsley Bridge Club and discover what you might have been missing right on your doorstep in S6!

There is a La Plata Club in Argentina and another in Spain, but the homeliest and friendliest is surely to be found right here in S6 and it’s even friendlier with steward Tim Brooke behind the bar. Readers are welcome to call in for a coffee after shopping in Hillsborough Centre, only one minute’s walk from the club, based on Walkley Lane for many years. With easy parking and with Supertram and bus stops close by, La Plata’s excellent location is equalled only by its comfortable, clean and bright surroundings. You can sit inside or in the welcoming Beer Garden right outside the front door. Brian Helliwell of La Plata says “We want shoppers and their families to visit and see what the club offers; it really is a cosy and familyfriendly home from home.” After entering through the Beer Garden you arrive in the Family Room which is well furnished and comfortable. Live acts appear on stage every Saturday and bingo is played several times during the week. On Mondays there’s bingo with free snacks provided, on Wednesdays it’s “All-Pay-Out” night and on Fridays and Sundays there is a £500 jackpot and Open the Box. Then there’s the separate Pool Room, recently refurbished it provides players with the privacy to enjoy a quiet game or watch sport on TV. Low priced drinks include Stones, John Smiths and Heineken, plus S6ers own Bradfield Brewery beer is available. With almost 500 members La Plata is already wellknown inS6, so why not visit soon and see if you might like to join them? Renowned artist Tony Gold appears at La Plata this Saturday 23rd July.

BLADES BLUNTED BY THE IRON OWLS UNVEIL NEW KITS United’s preparations took a small setback as they narrowly lost at Glanford Park on Saturday afternoon, despite mounting a second half comeback. Scunthorpe took their chances in the opening 45 minutes, with Colin Daniel netting a brace, either side of a goal from Alfie Beestin. But the Blades were much improved after the interval but fell just short of levelling the game, despite efforts from substitutes Rhian Brewster and Iliman Ndiaye. Boss Heckingbottom rotated his squad again for Saturday’s clash with the Iron, with youngsters Amissah and Arblaster given a chance to impress from the start, with United’s most recent addition Clark named on the bench. United were quickly out of the block as Lowe volleyed over at the back post from

an excellent deep cross from Broadbent, but after both teams had enjoyed spells of possession, it was Scunthorpe who had a couple of forays into the Blades area, before Feeney latched on to a long ball forward and tested Amissah. On 21 minutes, a slip from Broadbent as he attempted to clear Nuttall’s cross allowed DANIEL time to control before rifling past Amissah. United’s response would have been instant, but Blades loanee Dewhurst was at his best to deny Robinson at the back post from Fleck’s inswinging corner. Moments after the half hour, things went from bad to much worse for the visitors. Scunthorpe doubled their led on 33 minutes as BEESTIN applied the finishing touch from close range after Butterfield had found Daniel in space on

the left. Basham limped off and was replaced by Ahmedhodžić, but before United could reset defensively, DANIEL was left unmarked to head home a third for the home side. Ndiaye replaced Osula at the interval and in the opening exchanges of the second period, Jebbison stung the palms of Dewhurst. The Blades were certainly looking to make a dent in the three-goal deficit, but Coulibaly could only fire over from Broadbent’s low cross from the right. The pressure continued, but Dewhurst stood tall to save from Lowe, after good work from Fleck, before Jebbison backheeled wide on the rebound. As the hour mark ticked by, Norwood replaced Arblaster and could have scored minutes later, after Norwood had robbed Taff high up the pitch.

United had got Scunthorpe pushed firmly back now, but Lowe failed to hit the target from Norwood’s inviting centre. At the other end, Amissah was alert to deny Fleming. Shortly after a flurry of United changes, one of them, in the shape of BREWSTER gave them hope, as headed home from Baldock’s cross from the byline with 16 minutes remaining and five minutes later after Baldock had won a header, NDIAYE rifled home from the edge of the area to give them further hope. United galvanised by the six substitutions were sensing a draw, but after Dewhurst failed to collect under pressure from Berge, Brewster blazed over and unfortunately that was the last real chance of netting an equaliser.

Jean Belehouan is the latest Blades prospect to be loaned. The young central defender joins National League North outfit Boston United until January. Marcus Dewhurst, Femi Seriki and Kyron Gordon all enjoyed successful loan spells at Boston last season. Dewhurst, Seriki, Jake Eastwood, Harry Boyes, Harrison Neal and now Belehouan have been loaned to aid their development.

With the Owls now back on home soil following the training camp in Portugal, Darren Moore is looking forward to the next steps of our summer schedule. All eyes are focused on the 30 July League One curtain raiser against Portsmouth at Hillsborough but in the meantime the gaffer has stressed there is plenty of work to be done. He said: “One of the things that has pleased me the most about pre-season is that the performances have been getting visibly better and better. “The play has been more

consistent over a sustained period. I’m really pleased overall with the trip to Portugal. “Some really heavy work has been done and the players will benefit enormously from that. We’ve given them the weekend off so they can recover from the loading of the work and we’re pleased to complete the programme. “We move on to next week now and that’s when we hit the fast forward button because the start of the season will soon be upon us, less than two weeks away.

“We have another game on Wednesday against really good opposition in Rayo Vallecano and then on Saturday at Wigan, so now it’s about seeing the sharpness of all the work.”

Jean Now we fast forward loaned

The Owls are proud to unveil their official home and away kits for the 2022/23 season. Last week they premiered their reveal video showcasing the brandnew Macron strips, once again giving a nod to their community roots, featuring local champion boxer and Wednesdayite Dalton Smith. The video also features a high energy track from up-and-coming Sheffield band and fellow Owls fans, VIVAS. The home shirt houses the Owls’ traditional blue and white stripes, with a smart black pinstripe to either side. An intricate blue, white and black design adorns the collar,

arms and trim through the shirt, black shorts and blue socks. The away shirt is based on the iconic yellow kits of the past, while adding embossed stripes of the home shirt to give a modern SWFC twist on classic retro design. The shorts are the same blue, alongside tailored yellow socks. The logo of Wednesday’s new principal partner, Host & Stay, takes pride of place on the front of both the home and away shirts. Following previous feedback, increased sizes up to 7XL in men’s shirts and size 24 in ladies will be available to supporters. The shirts on sale are the exact models as those

worn by the players with sizes manufactured to Macron’s current specifications. Prices for adults in short sleeve are £52, juniors £37 and infant kits, with the shorts and socks included, £42.

Full sale dates will be announced in due course and Owls fans will get their first viewing of the new strip when they welcome Spanish La Liga side Rayo Vallecano to Hillsborough on Wednesday 20 July.

Warne acknowledges need to add to squad Manager Paul Warne reflected on his side’s pre-season outing at Mansfield Town. “I really enjoyed the game to be fair. The lads are getting used to patterns and triggers. It felt a lot more like us today. We crossed the ball a lot. We should have took more chances, possibly. “We were a little open at the back but we have a few issues and people playing a little out of position, but it was generally good. “The only downside for me

is losing JJ. He’s going to be out for a long period of time. It’s a massive blow for us. We are down to two strikers in the middle. That’s a problem for us. “We’ve still got a lot to do but our better players got a good work out today and they are looking at little closer to how we want them to be. “Apart from JJ, we had no more injury issues. That’s good. The result is immaterial to me and that’s not what’s important to me in pre-season.”

New boy Adam Long is relishing the prospect of competing for a starting berth in the heart of the Rovers defence. The 21-year-old signed a two-year deal after switching from Wigan Athletic for an undisclosed fee and is looking to establish himself as a regular starter at senior level.

To do that with Rovers he will need to force himself ahead in a highly competitive race for centre back spots. “The manager said he wants me to come in and work hard and results will start to show for you,” Long said. “I just feel like it is for me to prove myself and get games at men’s football

level. “I’m hoping that Doncaster can be a place where I can do that and hopefully we can be successful. “I feel like it’s been a long time coming. I’ve played a handful of games at senior level and I feel the time is right to play on a more regular basis. “The manager has laid out his plans for the season and how he wants to play and I feel that just fits me perfectly.”

Long was part of a Wigan squad that won promotion from Sky Bet League One last season and says the experience has prepared him to aid Rovers’ efforts for an immediate return to the third tier. He said: “I feel last season gave me an insight into how it was and what it takes. “I know how big this club is and we should be pushing for promotion this season.”
