UNDER 100 DAYS UNTIL THE RUGBY LEAGUE WORLD CUP Fans of rugby league are being urged to ensure they get the best seats in the house for the Rugby League World Cup 2021 with just under 100 days to go until the tournament kicks off at St James’ Park as England men take on Samoa men on 15 October. The 100-day milestone sees excitement for the trailblazing World Cup continue to rise with this Autumn’s tournament breaking new ground in staging a recordbreaking 61 matches across three competitions simultaneously for the very first time. Sheffield will host 9 fixtures in total, with England v Greece men’s game at Bramall Lane on Saturday 29 October, as well as 8 show-stopping wheelchair fixtures between 4-13 November at EIS Sheffield. Doncaster’s Eco-Power Stadium will host three men’s group games. These are: Monday 17 October: France v Greece Sunday 23 October: Samoa v Greece Monday 31 October: Papua New Guinea v Wales

It will also be a team base for Samoa’s men’s team. making it great value for all.

RLWC2021 Chief Executive, Jon Dutton, said: “With just 100 days to go until the Rugby League World Cup starts at St James’ Park it’s incredibly exciting to be in the final phase of preparation for what is set to be the biggest, best and most inclusive Rugby League World Cup in history. “The interest in the tournament and demand for tickets has been great to see, particularly after the disappointment of postponement last year.

We are now close to selling out a number of our tournament fixtures, with the interest in women’s and wheelchair matches particularly encouraging to see. “I urge everyone to get behind the tournament and be part of the sport’s future history. It is vital we see record attendances across the tournament, witness the best players in the world in action and be part of something truly special.” Fans can purchase tickets via www.rlwc2021.com/ tickets.

SY’S MAYOR COMES FEARS THE REGION IS BEING UNDERMINED South Yorkshire's Mayor Oliver Coppard said: "The calamity gripping the Conservative Party is in danger of not only undermining our country’s reputation for stable government, but is a huge distraction from the work going on in places like South Yorkshire." "Thousands of people in places like South Yorkshire lent this government their vote – many for the first time – on the basis of their promises to ‘Level Up’ our country; creating wealth and opportunities in places forgotten by Westminster and undermined by years of austerity. "Since being elected in May, I have picked up negotiations with the government about investments worth billions of pounds, leading to the creation of potentially thousands of high paid jobs in the industries of the future. And yet, the chaos engulfing the government threatens to derail not only those investments but further undermine its own ‘Levelling Up’ agenda. "In South Yorkshire, like so many regions across the country, we are desperate to drive innovation, promote clean growth, help people into jobs, and deliver the better transport connectivity that our communities need. "Because right now there are too many families worried about heating their homes and feeding their children. We have businesses fearing for their future. And our bus network is in crisis, with operators threatening to withdraw a third of routes in October.

"The calamity gripping the Conservative Party is in danger of not only undermining our country’s reputation for stable government, but is a huge distraction from the work going on in places like South Yorkshire. "I am happy to welcome the new Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Greg Clark, and urge the government to raise their focus outside of Westminster, putting their attention where it belongs: on the jobs, future, health and wealth of the people who live and work in South Yorkshire, and across the country."

News, Information and Advice

warning of fire risk check your boiler! help for households The UK’s leading rural insurer, NFU Mutual, is making a plea for visitors to the countryside to leave barbecues at home and not slip on fire safety as temperatures are set to soar in the coming days. Droughts in spring and more recent heatwaves have already seen a number of large gorse and grass fires across the country, including those traced back to disposable barbecues and fire pits which serve as a stark warning against carelessness in the countryside. These fires, which can spread quickly and are difficult to put out, cause devastating damage to vast areas of the British countryside and endanger wildlife and livestock, as well as destroying natural habitats. In June, a huge gorse fire quickly destroyed around 1,000 square metres of headland near Kingswear in Devon, after another fire in Dartmoor led to the closure of the county’s busy A386 in March. On the same day in June, several gorse fires raged in Cornwall as people took to the coast to enjoy the hot weather. Later in June, a disposable barbecue started a large blaze in an area of heathland in rural Dorset. Further north, two wildfires endangered rare wildlife in Northern Ireland’s Murlough National Nature Reserve, with barbecues and lighter fluid found in the ashes. In Scotland, a gorse fire in Edinburgh obscured the city’s National Monument on Carlton Hill. Earlier this year, a grassfire near Bridgend in Wales damaged an area equal to around 25 football pitches, and a fire pit, used as a barbecue, sparked a grassfire which destroyed a plantation of trees on Salisbury Plain. Rebecca Davidson, Rural Affairs Specialist at NFU Mutual, said: “We know that dry, hot weather puts large parts of the countryside at risk of

fire, and there are many examples of quickspreading fires causing great damage to rural areas, including farmland and nature reserves. We’re urging visitors looking to go out and enjoy the hot weather to act considerately in the countryside, as the smallest spark can start a massive fire. Please don’t use disposable barbecues or make fire pits on walks as they can smoulder long after you have left. Visitors shouldn’t drop matches or cigarettes, both of which can smoulder and start a fire, and should pick litter up.” Safety at home Fire safety should start at home, so people looking to enjoy the hot weather with a barbecue in their garden should also take care of the risks. Andrew Chalk, home insurance specialist at NFU Mutual, said: “Barbecues should be situated away from the house and away from dry grass, shrubbery or bushes. A single spark from the barbecue could be enough to start a fire. Have some water nearby in case a spark does ignite and consider wetting the area around the barbecue if necessary. Hot ashes or sparks are also more likely if the barbecue hasn’t been cleaned since it was last used, so people should regularly clean their barbecues of ash and old grease.” Countryside fire checklist: • Don’t drop used matches or cigarettes – they can smoulder and start a fire • Don’t start campfires or use disposable barbecues on grass, moorland or in forests • Call 999 if you spot a fire while out in the countryside • Avoid parking in narrow country lanes where emergency services vehicle access could be blocked • Don’t drop litter – discarded bottles can focus sunlight and start a fire • Keep to footpaths when walking in the countryside

As energy bills are set to soar even higher by October 2022, with the price cap predicted to increase by a further 40% to a whopping £2,800, homeowners and tenants across the UK are being urged to check their boilers for faults. Experts at Boiler Central suggest that faulty boilers could increase energy bills even further, meaning you’ll be forking out even more during the cost of living crisis. A boiler should be serviced every 12 months and while for homeowners it is their responsibility, for tenants, the landlord is fully responsible by UK law. A spokesperson from the company said: “Regular boiler service can prevent issues that are not only expensive but potentially hazardous to a household. UK law is clear about who is responsible for maintaining and servicing boilers in rental properties. The law stipulates that landlords or letting agencies must maintain boilers (and other gas appliances) in rented properties, do a yearly gas safety check on all gas appliances, and give a copy of the most up-to-date certificate to new and existing tenants.” However, it’s the responsibility of the tenant to inform the landlord of any faults or potential issues with the boiler. The law doesn’t give landlords the right to force an entry if a tenant is unwilling to allow access to the boiler, the landlord should give repeated notice to the tenant in writing and educate them on the need for an annual gas safety check and regular boiler service. Six crucial signs your boiler needs to be serviced • Your energy bills are

notably higher • There is no hot water, or the water is not sufficiently heated • Heating the water takes longer than usual. • The boiler is leaking • The boiler makes an unusual noise. • Foul smells coming from the boiler (this could be gas leaks, such as carbon monoxide) And, while summer may not seem like the most obvious time to bother with your boiler, you shouldn’t completely abandon the appliance altogether. To avoid facing further costs later in the year, here are some things you can do to keep your boiler functioning properly. • Turn on the heating - Our experts advise actually turning on the heating a few times during the warmer months to ensure that the appliance is working as it should, and to avoid being faced with problems when autumn approaches. • Make sure vents aren’t blocked - Ventilation is another essential part of keeping your boiler working safely, as it needs adequate airflow. Make sure that the vents are not covered or blocked by household items, even if the boiler is installed in a cupboard. • Bleed the radiators – The experts also suggest bleeding your boiler’s radiators once a year to keep them running as they should. While this isn’t necessarily a difficult process, not everyone knows how to do this. If you’re confused, it is best to invite a boiler specialist to help you out.

There’s additional financial support on its way for families, pensioners and care leavers in Rotherham to help with hardship caused by the cost of living crisis. Rotherham Council’s Cabinet announced initial plans for how it intended to allocate its share of the Household Support Fund in May this year. And it considered further measures at its meeting on Monday 11th July: • Increasing funding for a supermarket food voucher scheme for families with children in receipt of means-tested free school meals to meet an increase in the number of eligible children • Help with gas and electricity bills for care leavers living independently for the first time • Additional targeted financial support to help the poorest pensioners with gas and electricity bills The Council’s Energy Crisis Support Scheme is already in place, which is providing one off £250 payments to working and nonworking households in Rotherham struggling to make ends meet because of energy price hikes. This scheme is funded by the Council and has been supplemented by an additional £150 for pensioners struggling with the cost of living, linked to the Energy Crisis Support Scheme and paid for from the Household Support Fund. In total, the package of support adds up to almost £2.5m, which is the full Household Support Fund allocated to Rotherham Council by the Government, covering

the period from March to September 2022. The Household Support Fund has been allocated to all local authorities. Councils decide how the fund is distributed in their area. The Government has announced that a further round of the Fund will be allocated to cover the second half of the current financial year. The Council is currently awaiting an announcement about the amount it is to be allocated. Councillor Chris Read, Leader of Rotherham Council said: “The increase in food, fuel, gas and electricity costs is tough on everyone and we know people are really struggling. The Household Support Fund, along with other national measures to support people at this difficult time is welcome but we know it is only a sticking plaster for an increasingly gaping wound. We know many people are having to really tighten their belts, but with only a finite resource, we’re trying to target our support at those in the very greatest need – people in receipt of means-tested benefits and those with less than £150 left each month after they’ve paid for essentials like food rent and utility bills.” A wide range of information about the support available, saving money, jobs and benefits is available on the Council’s website. Rotherham Council is amongst the first local authorities in the country to have distributed the Government’s £150 Council Tax energy rebates to all its eligible households.

shock public loo report The Bathroom Manufacturers Association’s ‘Nowhere to go’ report, published this week, summarises recent results of a survey on the state of our public loos. The findings do not make a pleasant read, with the national average score for local public loos at a lowly 4.2 out of 10. Most people regard a public toilet as a facility operated by the local council, and toilets in Sheffield and Cardiff received the lowest ratings. Local MPs Gill Furniss, Louise Haigh, Paul Blomfield, Olivia Blake and Clive Betts have been made aware of the findings of the report and has been asked to press for an inquiry into the matter. Only a quarter of people feel there are enough public loos in their area, and only one in three believe those toilets are clean and well kept. The report also uncovers the reasons people dodge public loos and the factors they consider make for a good facility. Bathroom Manufacturers Association, Chief Executive, Tom Reynolds, said: “Public loos are an essential piece of social infrastructure which has been neglected for

too long. But a lack of co-ordinated investment for many decades has resulted in inadequate public toilet provision. We feel it is time for policy-makers to reverse the trend of public toilet provision, and our survey results suggests the British public thinks so too.” Richard Braid said: “Public toilets have a real impact on our local communities and can restrict people’s daily activities. We know, hundreds of public toilets have closed across the country in the last decade and the BMA’s report clearly indicates the impact this is having on the public. They are often viewed as an expensive provision which local authorities are not legally required to provide, leaving them vulnerable to cuts. We need to recognise how important they are to the public and change the script.” The BMA is calling on MPs and the Housing, Communities and Local Government Select Committee to launch an inquiry to forensically examine the issue, in the light of the findings of the research.

Ale brewed in memory of Stan Shaw ‘little mester’ of Sheffield

A brand new beer is being launched in memory of a Sheffield cutlery legend who died last year. Stan Shaw, last of the “little mesters”, will have an ale produced in his name by the Little Mesters Brewing company in Meadowhead. The world-renowned knife-maker crafted blades for clients including the Queen, Elvis Presley and US presidents. Little Mesters Brewing said all proceeds from sales of Stan IPA will go to the Stan Shaw Memorial Trail Appeal. The ale will be launched at the Millowners Arms, which is a small pub

within Kelham Island Museum where Stan Shaw’s knife collection is held. Mr Shaw stopped working in 2019 due to ill-health but he continued to show off his skills to the public in his workshop at Kelham Island Museum. Mr Shaw was one of Sheffield’s last “little mesters”, self-employed craftsmen who worked out of the city’s famed cutlery works. An appeal to raise funds for a permanent memorial recognising the work of Stan Shaw and the other Little Mesters was launched in February. Mr Shaw became an apprentice at 14 and went on to spend almost 80 years forging, grinding

and finishing blades. In 2017 he was awarded a British Empire Medal in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours list for his services to manufacturing in the city. More information on the appeal can be found at www.facebook.com/ littlemester1 For more information and cask orders you can contact the brewery direct at info@ littlemestersbrewimg. co.uk The 440ml cans can be found at Mitchell’s Wine Merchants at Meadowhead.

BLADES GET OFF TO WINNING START United’s pre-season campaign began with an encouraging success in the searing Portuguese heat against Casa Pia at the Estádio Pina Manique on Friday night. Despite falling behind inside the opening five minutes, goals from Sander Berge and Daniel Jebbison ensured the Blades got their preparations for the new season off to a positive start following an intensive week away in Lisbon. Boss Heckingbottom gave a number of players 45 minutes of action, although Foderingham (calf ), Robinson (illness) and Doyle (thigh) weren’t risked. Skipper Billy Sharp, Oli McBurnie, Jayden Bogle and Jack O’Connell have all travelled to Portugal to continue their rehabilitation. United started brightly but fell behind early on. Neal was caught in possession deep inside his own half and having been played through on goal GODWIN prodded the ball into the

Reece James joins Owls on loan The Owls are pleased to announce the signing of Reece James on a seasonlong loan from Blackpool. The 28-year-old is Wednesday’s seventh summer addition, joining a day after the permanent capture of fellow defender Akin Famewo. Predominantly a left back, James is equally comfortably on the left of midfield and began his

net past the oncoming Davies, to put the hosts in front against the run of play. But the Blades reacted positively to the early concession and forced a flurry of corners in quick succession. Neal saw a shot deflected over from the edge of the area, the home goalkeeper then punched clear under pressure before denying Egan at the back post. There was some concern for the welfare of Norrington-Davies having tracked the dangerous Godwin to the byline from halfway and unfortunately, he was subsequently replaced by Gomis. Prior to a refreshment break, Brewster headed over from a promising position from Osborn’s inswinging corner. United deservedly restored parity in the 32nd minute. Osborn’s free kick wasn’t cleared properly, Brewster saw an effort blocked, but BERGE kept his composure to score from close-range. The Blades continued to press high and put the

hosts under pressure and having won the ball back, Ndiaye teed up Brewster who struck the post with a placed shot. With half time in sight, Davies came to United’s rescue. A ball was played in behind down United’s left and Godwin found space to volley towards goal, but thankfully the Welsh stopper was equal to his effort, turning away at the expense of a corner. Heckingbottom subsequently rang the changes at the interval to give as many of his players some valuable minutes in testing conditions, with only Davies and first half substitute Gomis returning to the field for the second 45. The early stages of the second half were scrappy, but Osula had a sight of goal following another high pressure, but the substitute goalkeeper for Casa Pia denied him. United were caught out through the middle approaching the hour and having committed a foul, Gordon was cautioned.

On 63 minutes, United hit the front. JEBBISON seized on a loose pass out from the home goalkeeper and kept his composure in fashioning space for a shot which he duly fired into the bottom corner. The hosts made a number of changes as the game entered it’s latter stages, but it was United who continued to press and push in search of another goal, with Osula looking a real handful. The closing stages saw both sides content to try and retain possession, although Coulibaly had the last shot on target from distance as United saw out the game to register a deserved win.

He enjoyed loan spells with Carlisle United, Rotherham United and Huddersfield Town before making a permanent switch to Wigan Athletic in July 2015. The full back played 57 games for the Latics and went on to join Sunderland, later signing for Doncaster. James played 80 games in two seasons for Rovers, scoring nine goals, with the

bulk of those appearances coming under Darren Moore. He joined Blackpool at the

start of last season and now bolsters Wednesday’s ranks ahead of the 2022/23 campaign.

Gary McSheffrey was pleased with the level of control shown by Rovers as they comfortably saw out the friendly at Nuneaton Borough. Goals from summer signings George Miller and Josh Andrews saw Rovers through a second consecutive 2-0 triumph in pre-season. While he admitted he wanted better from his players, first team manager McSheffrey was pleased to see some of the work on the training ground transferred into the game.

McSheffrey on the performance: “There were good bits and some not so good bits. “For large periods of the first half we wanted to control the game a bit better, especially after going one ahead. Could we

look after the ball better, can we not go and try to score with every attack and force play. “Second half, we did that a lot better. We controlled midfield better and took the sting out of their play. They still had a couple of decent chances and we got a bit lucky with the one from the half way line that just went over. “I can’t complain. A 2-0 win and the lads saw the game out really well.” On goals for new signings George Miller and Josh Andrews: “It was another good header from George. In the first half we had a couple of chances for George and Reo [Griffiths] and you just want to see a bit more composure and better decision making. “Josh came on and gave us themed opportunities. In addition, shirts are reduced by 25% or just over, with adults down to £36, juniors £26, and £30 for infant sets, including shirts and shorts. And still there’s more - all supporters wishing to have the 21/22 shirt signed by their favourite Wednesday player will have the chance to do so! that different ball forward. He won a lot of his first contacts and when the ball was at his feet he was bringing other people into the game. “It looked a bit more fluent in the second half. “Josg got the goal to give us that cushion which allowed us to get people off, get the young lads on and rest a few legs. On controlling matches: “We’ve been working on it - controlling the game in the opposition half or on half way. “You don’t have to go forward all the time. You pick your moments especially when you’re winning. “We’re getting used to controlling games. “I know the opposition is going to get better as each game goes by but it’s just

good to get into those habits.”

On the health of the squad: “You’re always going to get injuries. It’s part of the game. There’s not many out there that have fully fit squads to choose from and if they do, they’re very lucky. “We’ve added some numbers and we’ve got some numbers back. “Harrison Biggins and Luke Molyneux travelled with us and they were running on the pitch to get up to the levels that are required. They’ll feature in the next game. “We’re getting some numbers back and hopefully in the first couple of weeks of the season we’ll have a healthy looking squad.” provide your contact details to be entered in the draw. As well as shirts all other remaining Macron items are reduced by 25%. Supporters are reminded that due to the higher purchase cost this season from our provider, we are unable to offer significantly discounted prices as in previous years. His loss will be felt by many at the golf club, including by our players and staff who crossed his path at our shared training base there. We are sure that Dave’s popularity in the local area through his connections with both the football and golf clubs will mean that he is missed by many in the Rotherham area. Rest in Peace, Dave.
