YOU ARE INDIE

Bendfilm guide 2012 / 7

A message from BendFilm We welcome you to the 2012 BendFilm Festival, a celebration of independent cinema. You are here because you love film. You’re here to support independent filmmakers. They may be the ones creating cinematic labors of love, but they could not be doing so without you. It is your own love of film — of great acting, directing, screenwriting, cinematography and more — that sustains indie filmmakers. BendFilm is thrilled to bring its ninth annual festival to Central Oregon. We are proud to enrich the cultural life of Central Oregon during these four October days. One of the finest things about BendFilm, we believe, is the connections and conversations this festival facilitates. We hope you will expand your personal horizons as you watch films, attend panels, and interact with actors, filmmakers, your friends and neighbors. The films you will see bring voices and visions to our community from the perspective of so many human experiences and cultures, and remind us of our differences, but also our similarities. We hope that the moving pictures of BendFilm bring you a little closer to the big picture of life. There are many people and organizations to thank for making this festival possible. Foremost is our founding sponsor, Brooks

Resources. They have been essential to BendFilm from the start; without Brooks, we would not have been able to accomplish or sustain what we have. The same can be said for our many other sponsors who continue to make this festival happen, year after year; to the cities and citizens of Central Oregon, who give such marvelous annual support to the festival; and to tbd advertising, the creative and professional agency so responsible for getting our message out. Our deepest gratitude to Orit Schwartz, festival director, for her tireless dedication to excellence and for pouring her passion and life into making the BendFilm Festival outstanding. We are grateful to our scores of volunteers and managers who are with us, lending their time and expertise to make us a success. From watching hundreds of hours of film submissions, to taking charge of tickets BendFilm Board of Directors or production, to giving a few hours in guest Frank Groundwater services, their contribution is invaluable and Ben Dittman, president Tina Borders, vice-president Michael Gough embraced with deep appreciation. April Munks, secretary Gina McClard Our success is only possible through your Orit Schwartz, festival director Justin Snyder continued participation. It is an honor and a John Gottberg Anderson privilege to present this festival each year to Kim Cooper Findling the people of Central Oregon.

For downtown Bend filmgoers, we recommend leaving your car in the City Parking Garage on Lava Street at Minnesota Avenue. The garage is about two blocks from the Tower Theatre and about three blocks from McMenamins. The City of Bend has graciously suspended the daily time limits for the duration of the festival. Two hour parking limits remain in place, however, where they are zoned and marked on downtown streets. Parking is free in the shops at the Old Mill District in Bend.

where To Buy Tickets The fastest and easiest way to get tickets to films is to purchase them online at www.bendfilm.org. Here you can take your time, read about each film and decide what you want to see without leaving your home or office. You may also flip through the pages of this festival guide for descriptions of all scheduled movies. Tickets may be purchased online or at The Hub.

INDIvIDUAl TIckETs: If you intend to view only a few films during the festival weekend, you will probably want to purchase individual film tickets. They are priced at $11 online, or $12 at The Hub or at the door. Tickets are sold in a block, which includes a full-length film and a short film for a single price. Blocks cannot be broken up; tickets cannot be sold for the short films only.

PAssEs: To absorb as many films as possible with VIP treatment, we recommend you purchase a festival pass. You'll get *priority seating at all times, ensuring you the best available seat in the house.

INTRODUcINg...ThE INDIE PAss, $1000 If you don't want to have to wait in line and still get the best seats in the house, then this is the pass for you. This pass is good for any film, party or BendFilm festival event you want to attend. You must arrive 5 minutes prior to start time or you WILL lose your privileges. Only five available.

FUll FEsTIvAl PAss, $200

This assures express access to all components of the festival: Single admission to the Opening Night Film at 5:00 p.m. and the Opening Night Reception at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct 11; single admission to the BendFilm Awards Ceremony at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 13; and priority seating at all films.

FUll FIlm PAss, $125 If films are the only things that really matter to you - if you'd rather skip the party food and cocktails to pack a few more films into your weekend - then this is the pass for you. It allows priority seating at all films, including the Opening Night Film. * Priority seating means pass holders must arrive no later than 20 MINUTES prior to showtime to be guaranteed admission to films. An even earlier arrival time is recommended at McMenamins and the Oxford theatres, where pass holders are NOT guaranteed seats. Please wear your pass at all times during the festival. Holders of the Full Festival Pass must RSVP for party attendance by emailing info@bendfilm.org no later than Monday, Oct. 8.

RUsh lINE If seats remain available after ticket holders and pass holders have been seated, tickets for those seats will be sold to those waiting in the Rush Line. This is for lastminute film buffs willing to take their chances to get an empty seat. We recommend arriving at least a half-hour early at the theater to take your place in the Rush Line.

AN AFFAIR OF ThE hEART BIRTh sTORY: INA mAY West Coast Premiere gAskIN AND Sylvia Caminer, director ThE FARm mIDwIvEs (93m, USA, 2012)

BUFFAlO gIRls

In a cultural phenomenon every bit as fanatical as Deadheads and Bieber Fever, pop star Rick Springfield’s fans have been following him with religious devotion for 30 years. Bursting onto the global music scene in 1981 with “Jessie’s Girl,” his matinee idol good looks and starring role on General Hospital have often overshadowed his status as a serious musician … but not to the millions of international fans who make pilgrimages to his concerts just to spend time with other "Rick-a-holics" and be transported back to the glory days of the 1980's. We take an intimate and often comical look into this fascinating sub-culture and the lives of a few of these diehard fans, exploring how the relationship with their idol and his music has personally inspired and affected their lives and ALL those around them.

Buffalo Girls tells the story of two 8-year-oldgirls, Stam and Pet, both professional Muay Thai prizefighters. Set in small villages throughout rural Thailand, the film chronicles these young girls’ emotional and sometimes heartbreaking journey as they fight in small underground arenas to win prize-money and help provide for their families. After many months of rigorous training and a long schedule of fights, Stam and Pet face each other for the 20 Kilo championship belt of Thailand and a cash prize that will change the winner’s life forever.

Sara Lamm & Mary Wigmore, directors (93m, USA, 2012) The story of counterculture heroine Ina May Gaskin and her spirited friends, who began delivering each other’s babies in 1970, on a caravan of hippie school buses, headed to a patch of rural Tennessee land. With Ina May as their leader, the women taught themselves midwifery from the ground up, and became an integral part of a new, entirely communal, agricultural society called The Farm. The people of the Farm grew their own food, built their own houses, published their own books, and, as word of their social experiment spread, created a model of care for women and babies that changed a generation’s approach to childbirth.

The Eyes of Thailand tells the true and inspirational story of one woman’s quest to help two elephant landmine survivors walk on their own four legs. Treating their wounds was only part of the journey; building elephant-sized prostheses was another. Narrated by Ashley Judd, The Eyes of Thailand is a story of sacrifice and perseverance that shows how far one woman will go to save an endangered species from threats above and below ground.

For Seth Morrison, skiing is much more than a sport or job, it's a way of life. It's not a privilege he was born with; it's a passion he discovered on his own. Through hard work and dedication, Morrison has become one of the best skiers in the world. The Ordinary Skier traces his journey from the middle class suburbs of Chicago to the Colorado Rockies and into the underground skibum subculture that would eventually become Freeskiing. This is the story of how a collection of misfits turned an elite sport upside down, and how an ordinary kid chased his dream and became one of skiing's most iconic heroes. Kid Vargas is forced to face up to a devastating truth after he kills his opponent, Jonny Vasquez, in the ring. Kiss Me is a gritty, contemporary, neo-noir drama set in the often clandestine world of Latino boxing in East Los Angeles.

Sculpture and construction, as well as art and labor, are often imagined as not only unrelated but at odds with one another. Installation is a visual poem that documents the day-to-day labor of riggers, truckers, and construction workers as they assemble Richard Serra’s immense steel sculpture “Sequence.” This beautifully composed film captures workers and steel in moments of unexpected grace.

She found hope when she had lost everything. This film is a reminder to all that there is always hope. Where we have fear and doubt we can replace it with joy and peace. We can turn our weaknesses into strengths, and melt our suffering and grief into something whole and beautiful. Meeder's Mosaic is a small glimpse of Kim Meeder's life, yet through her story, we see that we are capable of being the change we want to see in the world. The Men's Room is an emotionally charged short film dealing with explicit themes of male sexuality, intimacy, and the concept of public decency. When Thomas ventures into a park for a sexual encounter with a stranger, he uncovers a striking complexity composed of desire, fear, and betrayal. The Men's Room explores the seemingly unwelcome yet enduring pastime of public sex, a world of secrecy and code lurking just below the surface of normalcy.

The BendFilm Future Filmmakers program encourages youth to share their voices and talents through moving pictures. Now in its eighth year, Future Filmmakers, founded by Michelle Alvarado of Wahoo Films, has grown to become a very popular part of the festival. This screening shows the results of two programs: The Oregon Student Video Contest is open to grades 5 through 12 and showcases films of one to five minutes made in the last year. The 72 Hour Shootout, a competition requiring students to make a short film within a long weekend, is also shown during this screening. The theme for this competition was announced on September 24 and students had three days to shoot, edit and submit their films. There are three cash winners, sponsored by G5: Best in Show ($200) and Audience Favorite ($100) for both the 72-Hour Shootout and the Oregon Student Video Contest. New this year, the Best in Show will be chosen by a panel of jurors instead of by the audience, and will automatically be submitted to the LA Film Festival to compete with their peers on a national level. This wonderful event continues to be sponsored by BendBroadband and will be emceed by Dave Jones.

JURORs: We'd like to thank our lovely panel of jurors for donating their time and being our first. Cheers! Michelle Alvarado owns Wahoo Films, a video production company that produces powerfully compelling “docu-mericals”. Michelle founded Future Filmmakers Festival in 2005 and continued to run it until 2011. Trevor McCreery is a native Central Oregonian, except when he attended school in Australia at Hillsong International Leadership College, a TV Media College. He has worked as an audio tech, morning show director, commercial producer and currently works at Zolo Media as their Creative Services Manager. Bob Shaw first moved to Bend in 1983 after serving in the Navy and then working for a college ministry. In Bend he started work in the recreational vehicle industry and then later found himself launching a new career in television and returning to college. He recently completed his degree work and certification as a Meteorologist and currently serves as Meteorologist for KTVZ News At Sunrise and as the Community Affairs Director for KTVZ. Patricia West-Del Ruth, M.A. has worked/works as an actor, producer and acting teacher in So. Cal and Central Oregon. She has won several awards including some Telly's, is a member of SAG and currently the Associate Artistic Director for Innovation Theatre.

Award-winning, Portlandbased Sisbro Studios creates high quality films about the natural world for kids. Their creations are known for being clever, funny and lovely. This year BendFilm presents Lost in the Woods, a halfhour, live action Sisbro movie that was created to accompany the children's book by the same name. An old box turtle (named Shirley) meets a raccoon (named Fernando Hernandafandavez) who is totally lost in the forest. Shirley helps Fernando discover the magic of spring, as well as the tale of a newborn fawn in the springtime woods. All the animals think the fawn is lost, but is he? Winner of over 33 awards and screened at over 16 film festivals, this short film includes several original songs, including a jazzy tune called The Signs of Spring sung by a lounge-singing tree frog. Accompanying the film will be Christine of Mama Bear Oden’s Preschool, leading activities for kids inspired by nature and including pine cone animals and animals in tree houses. Join us for this mid-day interactive good time. McMenamins offers great snacks at the theatre, including popcorn, pizza, burgers and sodas.
