EDITORIAL PHENOL PRICES FIRM UP, BUT LONGERTERM SENTIMENT IS BEARISH

here has been a slight uptick in phenol and phenol derivatives demand in Europe partly as result of an improved economic outlook, notably in the automotive sector, and an absence of phenol and derivatives imports from the United States and Asia, according to IHS Chemical's latest Market Advisory Service: Global Acetone. The upturn has been noticeable in plant operating rates in Western Europe, which improved from about 75% in January, to about 80% on average in April, according to IHS. Phenol contract prices in April were about â&#x201A;Ź1,517/m.t. The global demand for phenol has been steadily increasing over the last 10 years. In 2003, global phenol demand stood at 6,072,774 tons, before increasing to 7,934,218 tons in 2013. A significant portion of the increase in demand for phenol was from the Asia-Pacific region, and this is expected to continue in the forecast period. The Asia-Pacific region is expected to account for 51.2% of global phenol demand in 2020. The global demand for phenol will increase to reach 11,576,620 tons by 2020. China has rapidly emerged as a global petrochemical products manufacturing hub. Production in China enjoys the advantage of lower operating costs than the majority of other countries, but China currently imports a considerable amount of phenol in order to produce phenol derivatives such as Bisphenol A (BPA), phenolic resins, salicylic acid and nonylphenol. As a result there is huge scope for phenol capacity additions in China. Demand from China is currently driving the Asia-Pacific market's demand for phenol and it is expected to drive the demand in future. Bisphenol A (BPA), phenolic resins and caprolactam were the leading end-use segments for phenol in 2010, with 2,761,915 tons, 2,181,698 tons and 1,001,903 tons of demand, respectively, Together they accounted for more than 70% of global phenol demand. In terms of the end-uses of phenol, a similar trend is expected to continue throughout the forecast period till 2020. The recent increase in demand for epoxy resins (derived from phenol and acetone via BPA) from wind turbine power generators, where epoxy resins are used extensively in the rotor blade composites, is expected to continue due to the increased focus globally on sustainable alternative energy sources in the current environment of high costs with crude oil and energy. With a 20% per annum growth projected for the wind energy market, the phenol and acetone industry is expected to see growth and a wide range of opportunities in the next five years. Global phenol demand is assessed in CHEMICAL BUSINESS WEEKLY

terms of enduser segments and price, and the competitive landscape, at both the regional and national level, is also provided. With an annual growth of 3.5-4% in past two years, global demand hit 7,630kt/yr in 2004, and global capacity reached 8,300kt/yr, leading to oversupply. However, the redundant goods could be consumed in China. In recent years, China saw a rapid development in electronic & communication, construction, automobile and other industries, leading to an increasing demand for phenol derivatives. Chinese apparent consumption of phenol hit 617kt in 2012, 648.1kt in 2013 and was anticipated to reach 697kt in 2015. With development of Chinese economy, the demand for phenol will increase continually in following years. By end 2014, Chinese phenol capacity reached 455kt/yr, and about 97% goods were produced by isopropyl benzene process. Since domestic goods cannot satisfy demand, China should import goods every year with most from the US, Japan, Korea, Europe and Taiwan. Goods from Japan, Korea, Taiwan and the US occupied 88% of total imports in 1998, and the figure escalated to 96% in late 2001. After an antidumping investigation, Commerce Ministry of P.R.C declared on Feb. 1, 2004 to impose antidumping duty on goods from Japan, Korea, the US and Taiwan. Generally speaking, proportion of imports will decrease due to rising self-sufficiency. China is anticipated to import 240kt goods in 2005. Chinese phenol capacity will rise by 168kt/yr to 623kt/yr in 2015, and the consumption is expected to be 700kt. After finishing capacity expansion and establishment of new units, producers in China will have close capacities, leading to basically-equal competitiveness. As a major feedstock for industry, agriculture, construction and medicine, phenol will enjoy rapidly-increasing demand in the future. In following two to 7 years, phenol demand growth is expected to mainly from BPA industry, which is a feedstock of PC. Certainly, demand from phenolic resin industry will increase. Phenol market will see fiercer competition because of follows: Original market pattern will be broken due to increasing producers. Most downstream users have no high requirements on phenol quality. In the context, competition in the future is anticipated to focus on price and service.
