Special Exhibition - Titanic the Legend Marking the hundred-year commemoration of the disaster, 2012 sees the SeaCity Special Exhibition Area host a completely original Titanic exhibition – ‘Titanic the Legend’. This special exhibition space will host other temporary exhibitions in future years. History at the Heart of Southampton

Encompassing over 800 years of history on one site, Southampton’s most important historic building, the Tudor House, is now open after almost a decade of repairs and refurbishment. Dating back to 1492, the current Grade 1 listed house has

In 1501 the painter ‘deaf Robert’ was working on the Bargate, painting decorative tudor roses on the outside of the building in preparation for the arrival of the Princess Catherine of Aragon, who was due to land in Southampton en-route to marry Prince Arthur, the heir to the throne of England. In the event, Robert’s work was for nothing as a storm blew the princess’s ship off course and she landed at Plymouth; in later years this was seen as a fateful omen about the fate of the marriage. Catherine of course did marry Prince Arthur but on his early death re- married his younger brother Henry, later King Henry VIII. This alliance meant that for the first part of Henry’s reign he was in alliance with Spain against the French and this created an opportunity for a young man called John Dawtrey. He had

come to Southampton in the hope of making a name and a fortune; he accomplished the latter by marrying a rich widow who lived in a large house in Bugle Street. John then was appointed to help purchase materials to build the king’s new warship, the Mary Rose and at the same time he began a major building programme for his Bugle Street residence. Oak timbers dating from the period can still be seen in Tudor House Museum which was John Dawtry’s home. He was also given the task of repairing and enhancing the defensive town walls and those magnificent remains still stand as a testament to his work. Both Henry and Queen Catherine visited the town probably being entertained by Dawtrey, the King inspected the town guns and even

presented a gun to the town himself which can still be seen in Tudor House garden. Southampton in the time of Tudors was considered one of the most magnificent towns in England, it welcomed all the Tudor monarchs as well as visitors from across the known world and traces of this rich story are still to be found today. A major programme of events takes place in Southampton from August to raise the profile of the heritage, archives and hist of Southampton in the Tudor Period. A Michaelmas Fair will take place on the 29th and 30th September in and around St. Michael’s Square with events including workshops, lectures, performances, games and a Living Tudor Market with stalls, stands, displays and entertainment.

Southampton Guest Guide: Shop to your heart’s content

There was a time when vintage shops had a reputation for being jam packed, untidy and even a bit smelly. Bedford Place offers a fascinating selection of small independent shops and stylish boutiques. This part of the city is also filled with bars and bistros all within easy reach of the city centre and parks.

Hepwright’s in Bedford Place, Southampton says that shops like hers are the new face of vintage.

“I hope visitors find my shop is as bright and welcoming as a designer boutique. We don’t pack the rails so it is easy to browse. Stock changes all the time and we try to offer as much for the mainstream fashion shopper as the vintage collector. We sell clothes and accessories people can wear every day.”

“I always say I’m running an adoption agency for clothes. The previous owners entrust their beautiful garments to me – and they tell me they are pleased they are going to be bought by someone who will love them just as much they did.” Vintage clothing has moved into the mainstream and is no longer the preserve of the young and trendy or flamboyant individuals who like to dress-up.

“If you want something a little bit different, vintage shops are the ideal place to go. Not only are the clothes more individual, but the shops are independently run by people with a passion for fashion.... We’ve got everything from wartime tea dresses, 1950s party frocks, Tweed jackets for the chaps, beaded evening gowns and everything in between. I love it when we can help style customers for big event like Bestival or Goodwood Revival.” “But you don’t have to dress top to toe in vintage fashion to get the look. A funky tie, a pretty silk scarf or a brooch added to your high street outfit can transform it into you own unique look.”
