Travel back in time

Steeped in intriguing stories of times gone by, including references in the Domesday Book, Test Valley has an abundance of historic architecture, is home to uncovered artefacts and contains more Iron Age hill forts than anywhere else in Hampshire. Step back in time and uncover it for yourself – it’s a real-life history lesson. Danebury Hill Fort, just outside Stockbridge, is one of the many Iron Age hill forts to be found in Hampshire. Built 2,500 years ago, the walls of this fort could certainly tell a few stories of its previous occupants! Conclude your visit by taking in the magnificent view from the top, it’ll leave you with a picture-perfect snapshot of the beautiful surrounding countryside. Discover what helped to put Andover on the map when you step inside the Museum of the Iron Age. Take a journey through the natural history of the town and surrounding areas through to the late 20th century. Relive the story of Danebury Hill Fort and discover what life was like for those who farmed, fought, worshipped and died in Wessex more than 2,000 years ago. From forts to threads…witness 19th century machinery in action at Whitchurch Silk Mill, which is the oldest silk mill in the UK. A gem of industrial heritage, this Georgian water mill, now a working museum, shows how wonderful looms of silk are created by the power of the River Test. If you ever wanted to span 750 years of history in just one day, you must visit King John’s House and Romsey Heritage Centre located in one of Romsey’s oldest thoroughfares. With three historic buildings on one site, you’ll explore King John’s House containing 14th century graffiti and rare bone floor, the Tudor Cottage complete with traditional tearoom and the Victorian Heritage Centre with its recreated gun shop and parlour. And Test Valley’s history isn’t just on the ground. Five miles from Andover and located beside the Army Air Corps Centre in Middle Wallop is the Museum of Army Flying, a British military aviation museum.

Romsey Signal Box is the centre of a unique working museum in Romsey and open to the public twice a month. Originally opened around 1870 and closed in 1982, the box was saved and moved to its own dedicated site. The signal box has been restored to operational order with various signals connected to some of the levers, which you are encouraged to pull. See demonstrations of the signal box in operation and, if you are an enthusiast, you can operate the signal box to a full timetable as if doing it for real! The site also features many other working exhibits, a small museum, café and toilet facilities. The whole site in Brick Lane is easily accessible from the town centre, the railway station and the old canal towpath. The Signal Box is open to the public from 12pm to 4pm on the first Sunday of every month, excluding January. The site is also open to the public on special dates (see website for more details). A small entrance fee is charged for adults. Enquiries: 01794 500523 www.romseysignalbox.org.uk

St Margaret’s

There is a wealth of stunning churches to visit while in Test Valley, many of which date back centuries and can be enjoyed on a leisurely countryside walk.

The small church of St Margaret’s in East Wellow near Romsey is the final resting place for Victorian icon, Florence Nightingale. Dating back to the 13th century, it’s an important shrine to the memory of The Lady with the Lamp.

All Saints at Little Somborne The size of the tiny original building is clearly visible and the windows still have their original 1,000 year old plaster splays. It was no doubt built in the reign of King Ethelred at a time of some prosperity when faith was restored after the first millennium. Within the churchyard is the grave of Sir Tommy Sopwith which reads, simply, ‘Aviation Pioneer’.

King John’s House & Heritage centre

Romsey Abbey Romsey Abbey is one of the finest examples of Norman architecture in southern England. With its lofty nave and distinctive Norman arches it is well worth a visit. It houses the tomb of Lord Mountbatten of Burma, the Abbey’s original bill of sale to the townspeople of Romsey in 1544 and a Saxon carved stone crucifix. To this day, it’s an active parish church with a fine choral tradition and is the venue for many music events and organ recitals.

Medieval house with 14th century graffiti and rare bone floor, Tudor cottage and Victorian museum, beautiful period gardens. Special events/exhibitions and children’s activities. Available for private hire.

Take me to the river

Lying at the heart of Test Valley are the crystal waters of Hampshire’s longest river. Flowing through the beautiful villages of Overton, Laverstoke and Whitchurch then southwest to Stockbridge before joining the sea at Southampton Water, the River Test is regarded as one of the finest chalk streams in the world. The alkalinity makes for the clarity of its water. Stroll along the riverside to catch a glimpse of trout or pick a spot for a picnic and enjoy the serenity that the river and the surrounding area offers. Not only is it a thing of natural beauty, it is an angler’s paradise. The river is fed from the underlying chalk aquifer which slowly releases the clear and cold water into the river and with careful management of the weed beds, makes this 40 mile stretch of water an extremely fertile environment for fish - the perfect habitat for salmon, trout and grayling as well as 22 species of mayfly and a profusion of weed! Arguably the most famous trout fishing river in the world, it was here that the most influential fly fishing writer of the 19th century, Frederick Halford, fished and it remains an ideal base for fishermen of today. Look out for the distinctive fishermen’s huts that can be found along the river; the most famous one, on the Oakley Stream, was used by Halford himself and can be seen as part of a visit to the National Trust’s Mottisfont House. The River Test is also home to one of the most exclusive clubs you could ever hope to join Houghton Fishing Club. It’s the oldest private fishing club in Britain, dating back to 1822, and has an exclusive and restricted membership of just 25!

And you can’t talk about the River Test without mentioning the part it played in the Richard Adams’ novel Watership Down. For those who don’t know the story, the Watership rabbits plan an escape on a punt which would not have been possible on most rivers, but the Test’s smooth-flowing nature made it a possibility. Sadly the rabbits were unsuccessful. However, being referenced in classic literature is just another thing that puts the River Test on the map! To find out more about where you can go fishing along the River Test go to www.fishingbreaks.co.uk

A Tasty Trout If you prefer to sample fresh fish rather than taking part in the catch, there are plenty of restaurants, pubs and venues that frequently have fresh fish and Test Valley trout on the menu. At Keats Restaurant in Ampfield, trout is sourced from Fjordling Smokehouse in Romsey, which uses traditional Norwegian west coast smoking methods to cure fish, including Hampshire trout. At The Rockingham Arms in West Wellow you can enjoy hot and cold smoked River Test trout, which is sourced from Hampshire Fare members, Chalk Stream Foods.

Itinerary 7: Picture perfect village Distance: 4 miles Download the route: www.wherwell.net/ walking

Many a rambler, dog walker, family and Sunday stroller have tried these routes.

Wherwell, near Stockbridge, has to be one of the most attractive villages in Test Valley, with a large number of thatched properties. This easy walk presents a village which was once renowned for its Abbey which lay alongside the present Victorian Church where relics of the Abbey can still be seen. Be sure to take your camera, it really is picture perfect.

Itinerary 8: Pace to the plate Distance: 5.5 to 7.5 miles Eateries: www.themayfly.co.uk and www.peatspadeinn.co.uk

Itinerary 5: Challenge yourself to the Clarendon Way Distance: 24 miles Download the route: www3.hants.gov.uk/longdistance/clarendon-way.htm For those hardy ramblers, take one of the more challenging routes. It starts beside the waters of the Itchen in the heart of Winchester and ends near the Avon at Salisbury Cathedral, providing a splendid variety of scenery along the way.

Itinerary 6: Step back in time Distance: 2.5 miles Download the route: www.walk4life.info/walk/test-valley-health-walksladies-walk Ladies Walk is a short but challenging route that offers great views across Andover. The path forms part of the pre-roman track known as the Mark Way, where 121 trees were planted to commemorate the wedding of His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales (who later became Kind Edward VII) to Princess Alexandra of Denmark in 1863. Of the remaining trees, horse chestnut, beech, oak and sycamore can be found. Test Valley Visitor Guide 2016 - Walk this way

If you want to experience the taste of Test Valley, why not work up an appetite to tantalise your taste buds. Follow the River Anton towards Goodworth Clatford and you’ll come across a couple of lovely places to sample some Test Valley fare. Pop in to The Mayfly, a riverside inn that offers glorious views over the world famous River Test as well as a hearty menu. Replenish with a Pimms on the riverside terrace in the summer or drink a glass of red wine by one of the wood burning stoves in the cosy bar in the winter. Alternatively, walk a little further on to the beautiful village of Longstock with its chocolate-box thatched cottages and reward yourself after your walk with dinner at The Peat Spade Inn.

Itinerary 9 : Sprat and Winkle Distance: 49 miles Explore the path of the Sprat and Winkle Line which used to run through Wherwell as part of the original South Western Railway. The unusual name may have come about due to the close proximity of the southern part of the line to the River Test where the winkle may be found – although the Sprat and Winkle leaflet gives two other possible explanations!

A Light Angelic Mill Whitchurch Silk Mill is part of Test Valley’s industrial heritage, a working museum still using original Victorian machinery, including a number of power looms. On arriving at Whitchurch Silk Mill and touring its grounds and interior, you will see the magnificent building in its equally magnificent setting and the beautiful fabrics that are still produced inside. Here it is not only theatrical costumes that adorn some of our finest actors and actresses that are made, but wall hangings made for Winchester Cathedral, silks for Hampshire Air Ambulance, and the exquisite cushions, scarves and ties available to buy in the mill’s shop. Built in 1814, under various owners, the mill has woven ribbons, serge, silk linings in 22 colours for Burberry and, during World War II, silk for insulating cables. Later, the mill wove black ottoman and satin for lining legal gowns and even, it was said, cream silk for a scarf, tie and handkerchief for the Kray brothers. In 1990 the Whitchurch Silk Mill Trust was established so that the people of Whitchurch could manage its future and ensure that it continues to produce some of the finest fabric that this country can offer. Sumptuous silks are still produced by hand, the traditional way and on original machines. They are so authentic that they adorn some of our finest TV actors and actresses as well as those in films and theatre. Visitors to the mill can enjoy the original mill wheel and Victorian machinery, including looms still active and full of fabulous fabrics. Take in the Victorian history that’s etched in the mill and indulge in stunning silk products produced at the mill and available in the shop. Young at heart - Test Valley Visitor Guide 2016

The Museum of Army Flying Tucked away in Northwest Hampshire lies one of Test Valley’s hidden gems. The Museum of Army Flying sits next to the busy Army Air Corps Airfield at Middle Wallop. Two large hangars house the journey of British soldiers in the air. From the pioneering days of balloons to the World War 2 Glider Pilot Regiment, to the modern chapter of helicopter operations. Likened to the Tardis, visitors awe at the volume of artefacts and more than 40 fixed wing and rotary aircraft hidden inside. Imaginative displays with clever use of interactives and video give insight into the role of the British military in the air. For front row seats of these aircraft in action, look no further than the Museum’s Apache Café. Overlooking the active airfield and open daily with no need for a ticket, this is the spot to enjoy a bite to eat and watch aircraft. Whether it’s an Apache thundering overhead or Lynx pilot leaning out waving at the café and play park below, this is where the action is! Good food, friendly staff and a great view make this a popular haunt among those in the know.

It continues to inspire creative development in others and this is thanks to the support of a number of energetic champions of the arts, the strong community of local artists, the arts officer and the Test Valley Arts Foundation. It’s a stunning place to visit and for those attracted to art, craft and design, it’s guaranteed to inspire.

Step inside the romantic house and gallery of Mottisfont, a place of inspiration to many an artist over its history. Here exhibits a substantial collection of 20th century pieces and the spacious gallery hosts a series of changing exhibitions which explore different aspects of art on a wide range of themes. Mottisfont Abbey inspired a 1930s dream of creativity where artists would come to relax and create works of art, some of which can be found in the gallery of its historic rooms. It’s a feast for the senses and one not to miss when visiting Test Valley.

For those who enjoy the atmosphere of a gallery, Stockbridge is home to many including The Wykeham Gallery which displays works of some well-known British artists.

Chapel Arts Studios in Andover delivers creative education through residencies, workshops and art projects such as The Bus of Many Things, to organisations, schools and towns of north Hampshire. It provides resource, advice, support and opportunities to developing artists in the community.

Welcome to Romsey

The ancient and prosperous market town of Romsey sits on the banks of the River Test. Florence Nightingale and the creator of Thomas the Tank Engine both lived in this timeless English market town. Pretty medieval streets surround the Abbey which is one of the finest examples of Norman architecture in England. Romsey Market is a strong survivor of the town’s impressive heritage. Enjoy wandering through the stalls on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. And, on the first Sunday of the month, in the Alma Road car park (near Waitrose) you will find one of Hampshire’s busiest Farmers’ Markets - an opportunity to buy top quality products grown or made within the local area. The backdrop of the stalls within the Market Place is a reminder of days gone by with the statue of Lord Palmerston (former Foreign Secretary and Prime Minister in the 1800s) and the Victorian Town Hall which first opened its doors in 1866. Venture up to Church Street and you’ll find the Heritage Visitor Centre and the local museum which is a Tudor cottage in a former Victorian gun shop and a wonderful tea room in a cottage garden. Within this historic town, there is an excellent range of shops and cafés from small independents to high street names, brands, stores and food retailers as well as the family owned department store, Bradbeers, which has been serving the town well for many years. After all that shopping you’ll no doubt need to stop for refreshments. There is an abundance of places to choose from, including the gallery café of Rum’s Eg in Bell Street, where you will not only find the perfect slice of cake but also works of art by many local artists. There are also some great eateries. Relax in a cosy country pub for some traditional pub grub, experience some of the finest food in Romsey’s 2 AA Rosette brasserie, enjoy excellent food in a period setting with unique character, seasonal delights of the deli or share a pot of tea for two in a family run tea room. The traditional railway station may be small but it serves around half a million customers a year! It has train routes to Salisbury, Southampton, Eastleigh and Portsmouth and direct services to the West Country and the Midlands.

Enjoy Romsey’s welcoming atmosphere as well as its history, shops, markets, people and the opportunity to explore further afield.

Whether a keen, green fingered gardener or someone who simply admires and appreciates the beauty of blooms, Test Valley includes four outstanding gardens which are all unique and well worth a visit – whatever the season. National Trust property, Mottisfont Abbey is famous for its walled rose garden with more than 500 varieties, which provide heavenly scents from June throughout the summer. The picturesque grounds have much to excite visitors all year round along with a programme of events and exhibitions. Houghton Lodge and Gardens near Stockbridge is a hidden gem and recognised as one of the finest gardens in Hampshire. Enjoy the Walled Garden with stunning peony walk and rose arbour, themed herb garden and ancient orchard of fruit trees. The 180 acres at Sir Harold Hillier Gardens near Romsey are famous across the world. The magnificent collection boasts more than 42,000 plants from around the world including 13 National Plant Collections and the largest winter garden in Europe. Year round events include the Art in the Garden sculpture exhibition running from May to October. Children will love the regular trails around the gardens, tree house and flying carpet swing. Voted the finest water garden in the world by the International Water Lily Society, Longstock Park Water Gardens is open on the first and third Sunday of each month from April to September. A beautiful haven for wildlife and glorious planting includes the National Collections of Buddleia. The Year of the English Garden celebrates the 300th anniversary of the birth of England’s greatest gardener, Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown, best known for designing gardens and landscapes at some of the country’s grandest stately homes including Blenheim Palace. In Test Valley ‘Capability’ landscaped and designed the park at Broadlands in Romsey. The picturesque style was followed and patroned by architect John Nash and John Plaw who built the 18th century cottage orné at Houghton Lodge. Blooming Marvellous - Test Valley Visitor Guide 2016

Woodlands and nature conservation

The woods of Test Valley provide a cool canopy for walkers or cyclists on a hot summer’s day, and those such as the ancient Harewood Forest lie right at the heart of the borough. Many of Test Valley’s woodlands and nature conservation areas are managed by Council staff and volunteers. Please contact the countryside officers at Test Valley Borough Council for details of the year round volunteering opportunities on 01264 368811 or email leisure@testvalley.gov.uk.
