Ancient monuments, houses and places Test Valley has a rich and varied heritage and contains more Iron Age hill forts than anywhere else in Hampshire. Danebury Hill Fort, outside Stockbridge, is one of the most studied Iron Age forts in Europe. Evidence suggests it was built 2,500 years ago and occupied for about 500 years.

Houghton Lodge is a Grade II* listed Gothic “Cottage Orné” set above the waters of the River Test, a great location for the picture-perfect image of Test Valley.

Discover more and see the artifacts which have been uncovered over the years at the Museum of the Iron Age in Andover. Today Danebury Ring and its once hidden gateway is the perfect place for a picnic and to fly kites.

Located in one of Romsey’s oldest thoroughfares, Romsey Heritage Centre encompasses three buildings, which span 750 years of history.

There are many examples of historic architecture across Test Valley. Romsey Abbey is one of the finest examples of Norman architecture in southern England. With its lofty nave and distinctive Norman arches it is well worth a visit. Inside you will find the tomb of Lord Mountbatten of Burma, the Abbey’s original bill of sale to the townspeople of Romsey in 1544 and a Saxon carved stone crucifix.

Dating from the 13th century, King John’s House was once the main building in a major medieval complex. Visitors can see many early features, including the roof timbers, graffiti cut into the medieval plaster and a rare bone floor.

Mottisfont Abbey and Gardens is a National Trust property which dates back to 1201 when the Augustinian Canons took residence. Traces of the 800 years of history can be found throughout the house and gardens. The sparkling 20th-century society hostess Maud Russell, who had a strong aesthetic sense and passion for creative people, has left her own indelible mark.

The Victorian museum features aspects of Romsey life during the Victorian and Edwardian period. The old gun shop has been reconstructed upstairs using original fixtures, fittings and display items, while former owners William Moody and his sister, wait to greet you in the re-created parlour room behind.

A river runs through it...

The River Test is acknowledged as one of Hampshire’s finest chalk streams. A natural habitat for kingfishers, marsh harriers and little grebe, the river passes through pretty towns and villages on its 40 mile journey to Southampton Water.

The river is fed from the underlying chalk aquifer which slowly releases the clear and alkaline water into the river. It is extremely fertile, providing the perfect habitat for salmon, trout and grayling as well as 22 species of mayfly and a profusion of weed! The river is well known for its abundant mayfly hatches that send the trout into a feeding frenzy – and result in a fair few fishermen’s tales.

A host of beautiful villages nestle alongside the River Test against the glorious backdrop of chalk downlands and wooded hills of the North Wessex Downs. These landscapes are connected by more than 500 miles of public rights of way. Four long distance footpaths and many miles of bridleways link extensive open spaces including Stockbridge Down, Stockbridge Marsh, Chilbolton Common and Danebury Hill Fort. All of these feature in a booklet called ‘Get Out and Walk’, which includes six walks chosen by Andover and Romsey Ramblers to tempt visitors out of their cars and enjoy the countryside. A number of local hostelries are also included for essential refreshment. Circular walks feature: Faccombe; Wildhem; Abbotts Ann; Lockerley; Michelmersh and Romsey. The Test Way runs through 44 miles of tranquil scenery following much of the course of the River Test. The long distance footpath has been divided into eight sections, each providing a great day out. Choose between water meadows or tidal marshes, riverbank picnics or cosy pubs, steep hills with exhilarating views or cool, peaceful woodland. The route is well signposted and passes through some of the most picturesque villages in Hampshire, strewn with listed buildings and historic churches. Part of the path is open to cyclists and horse-riders.

The Clarendon Way is a 24-mile walk joining the two Wessex cities of Winchester and Salisbury, crossing through Test Valley between the villages of King’s Somborne and Houghton.

Walking Wherwell

If charming villages are what you are looking for, then Wherwell, near Stockbridge, fits the bill. Explore the path of the Sprat and Winkle Line, which used to run through Wherwell as part of the original South West Railway. The unusual name may have come about due to the close proximity of the southern part of the line to the coast where the winkle may be found – although the Sprat and Winkle Line leaflet gives two other possible explanations!

Why not take the bus?

There are a number of routes operating around the borough. A free bus runs every Sunday through the summer and on bank holidays. It starts at Romsey Railway Station, making a number of stops on its way to Stockbridge, including Romsey Abbey, Mottisfont and Sir Harold Hillier Gardens. The villages of Longparish and Forton have wonderful thatched properties and, as you drop down into Wherwell and the site of what was once its historic abbey, you will have the most superb view of Test Valley. The entire village of Leckford was bought by John Lewis in 1928, and the properties are all decorated in the familiar green of the retail brand.

Look out for the distinctive fishermen’s huts that can be found along the river. The most famous lies on the Oakley Stream, a thatched construction that was used by the father of fly-fishing, F.W.Halford, and it can be seen as part of a visit to the National Trust’s Mottisfont Abbey. Living and working in one of the most beautiful parts of Britain has certainly proved inspirational to local artists. The Romsey Art Group has 300 members and was formed in 1963 by a small group of creative minded locals. The group hosts several exhibitions a year at the Mountbatten Gallery in Lee, near Romsey, and at their main spring and autumn shows you can expect to see more than 500 original artworks.

It’s a contemporary gallery and art space that wouldn’t look out of place in a desirable district of London.

The Fairground Craft and Design Centre in Weyhill is a showcase for local creativity. Visitors are encouraged to come and watch the artists and craftsmen at work in the studios and workshop spaces. Forget Chelsea or Marylebone High Street – Rum’s Eg of Bell Street is one of the jewels in Romsey’s crown. Not only does it have wonderful displays of art, but as a community interest company its profits are used to educate and involve the community at large.

“I kept walking past this empty building and dreaming about how it would look and feel, then one day I picked up the phone to speak to the agent and it has completely taken over my life since,” she said.

You will find this showcase for talented Hampshire artists just along from the main square in Romsey. Spread over three floors, it is a hub of creativity, with classes covering everything from mosaic making to how to build a bug house.

The venue features a fully raked auditorium, an arena for more informal shows and events, a fully equipped business suite, mirrored dance studio and spacious craft studio, all of which are available for hire.

The ground floor gallery sells cards, jewellery, contemporary art and gifts produced by the finest of Hampshire artists. Work from 80 artists is on display at any time and there are pieces to suit everyone’s pocket.

During the summer months The Lights can also be transformed into a unique venue for wedding receptions, when full use can be made of the outside decking area for drinks in the sunshine.

On the first floor a welcoming café offers home made lunches, delicious cakes and barista coffee. Perfect for meeting with friends, catching up on emails or taking five minutes out from shopping.

Throughout the year the Arena Café Bar is open all day for drinks and refreshments and makes a great place to meet friends and colleagues.

Finally, the top floor provides a fascinating venue for a wide range of workshops. Founder Siriol Sherlock explains that the gallery came to life as a result of a creative groundswell that saw local artists and art admirers willing to give the gallery their financial backing. The botanical artist, who lives in Romsey, used to walk past the premises in Bell Street and thought it would be ideal for a gallery.

She approached artists and art lovers to support her in the venture and many individuals have ploughed up to £1,000 or more of their own money into Rum’s Eg to get it off the ground. These patrons have been joined by corporate sponsors such as Waitrose, Hampshire County Council and Test Valley Borough Council. The gallery also benefits from a team of enthusiastic and committed volunteers who run social events and help with looking after the venue. “I wanted to create an art space that wasn’t scary for people to visit and would be a place where talented local artists could showcase their work,” said Siriol.

Green fingered gardeners and those who prefer to admire the work of others will be spoilt for choice when it comes to visiting gardens in Test Valley. What’s in bloom when...

Test Valley’s stunning landscapes and buildings have long inspired some of the world’s best known authors. Writers including Geoffrey Chaucer, Thomas Hardy and Ian Fleming have literary links with the area and even a very famous tank engine can trace his roots to Test Valley. These connections and many more are included in the ‘Literary Test Valley’ leaflet, produced by Test Valley Borough Council. Copies are available from Romsey Tourist Information Centre and the Council’s Beech Hurst office in Andover.

Water Lily Society, Longstock Park Water Garden is open on the first and third Sunday of each month from April to September. The beautiful haven for wildlife and glorious planting includes the National Collections of Buddleia and Clematis viticella as well as the Gilchrist Collection of Penstemon. The domain was favoured by John Spedan Lewis, a botanist best known for the retail partnership that bears his name.

A taste of Test Valley

Anyone spending time in Test Valley is sure to be impressed by the stunning scenery and the growing reputation this area has for fabulous food. A whole host of producers are putting local food on the map and making eating out a pleasurable experience with many pubs, cafes and restaurants to choose from. Everything from honey to chilli oils are available – and can be washed down with local beers and wines. Information on all the top producers and where to buy locally produced food is available in the A Taste of Test Valley leaflet which can be found at Tourist Information Points and Romsey Tourist Information Centre.

Many of Test Valley’s eateries offer local produce. The Bear and Ragged Staff pub near Michelmersh has been a public house since the 17th century. It is rumoured the inn got its name from the time the Earl of Salisbury stayed in the gardens of this building on his way to fight in the War of the Roses. While the White Horse Hotel and Brasserie in Romsey is renowned for its variety of freshly baked breads. Tucked away in a secluded spot with a jaw-dropping view across Test Valley, Cottonworth Vineyard is the home to award-winning wine.
