Visit Britain’s only museum dedicated to the D-Day landings, the D-Day Museum explores all aspects of the landings and is home to the Overlord Embroidery, the largest piece of embroidery in the world, tracing the D-Day landings from beginning to end. The Royal Marines Museum follows the fascinating history of the Royal Marines from recruitment to deployment. Take a walk through time and experience the thrilling adventures of this elite fighting force. Explore Southsea and Portsmouth’s history at Southsea Castle, which not only provides the best panoramic views out to the Solent but is also free admission. (Open March – October). The Castle was part of a series of fortifications constructed by Henry VIII to protect the country from invaders. Discover the huge ramparts and underground tunnels around this intriguing site.

Young children: Alongside Southsea Common, the Baby splash pool includes two paddling pools with plenty of play equipment to keep little visitors happy in the sunshine and warm weather. Play pirates whilst discovering tunnels and history at Southsea Castle which is free for all. Picnic alongside Canoe Lake, which is famous for its swans, crabbing and pedalos as well as the Model Village. Children will love the wide-open spaces and the play park. Southsea has great public transport links and is easy to navigate on foot or explore by bike. If you’re coming by car, watch out for signs for Ashby Place Car Park on Osborne Road or Waitrose car park on Marmion Road. There’s some free on-street parking too, but don’t forget that restrictions will apply. The Park and Ride is located on the M275 as you drive into the city and offers visitors an outof-town parking alternative. The buses to Southsea South Parade Pier are hourly and take around 25 minutes. See www.parkandride. portsmouth.gov.uk for timetable and prices.
