We had a flying start to 2017, hitting the 2 million passenger mark back in April, something that we celebrated in the terminal with our passengers waiting to depart. We then held our annual Runway Run in June which saw our Charity Partner, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance raise a staggering £16,000 for their wonderful cause. This was closely followed by us announcing our busiest month ever in August which saw over 225,500 passengers travel through the airport.

New Routes

We are delighted to announce our newest routes for summer 2018! Flights to Menorca with TUI will begin 26th May and operate on Saturdays and flights to Skiathos with Flylolo will begin 3rd July and operate on Tuesdays. More info at southamptonairport.com/news

Busiest Summer Ever Southampton Airport has enjoyed a record breaking summer after 445,556 passengers travelled through its doors during July and August, an increase of 4.2% compared to the same period last year. August was our busiest month ever with 225,682 passengers flying through!

COMMUNITY MATTERS: a positive space at Bitterne Park School It was great to visit Bitterne Park School in September and watch the unveiling of a brand new seating area and study facility that we had gifted to their new building. The airport has been working with Bitterne Park over the past few months to create and deliver an area which provides a flexible space that positively supports learning and is also a great place for the pupils to relax with friends. We hope the pupils love their new area!

Are you interested to know what happens behind the scenes of your favourite airport? We asked Jordan Peters – Security Officer, to tell us more... 1. What does your day to day job involve? My job involves greeting passengers, making sure that the people who fly out of Southampton and the staff that work here are kept safe. I make sure no dangerous items are being taken airside. 2. What is your favourite part of what you do? Meeting people and hearing about what travelling through Southampton means for them, and my team! 3. What training did you have to go through before you could do this job? I had to go through two tests that assessed my visual capability before I was allowed to interview. After that I had to learn all the rules and regulations that govern the aviation industry. 4. W hat made you decide to want to work in aviation/at the airport? I started working at the airport when I was 16 (I’m now 22) as a passenger service agent and honestly, to begin with, it was just to get a foot in the door of the working world, but since moving to security, every day is new and different and I feel like an integral part of the airport’s inner workings. 5. W hat do you love about working at Southampton Airport? It is relatively calm compared to larger scale airports. 6. W hat is your favourite destination from Southampton? The slopes of Andorra, between France and Spain, which you can reach via Perpignan Airport. A very small but beautiful country in both the winter and summer. 7. Who is the most famous person you’ve met at work? I’ve met a lot of famous people but I’d have to say the most famous in my eyes would have to be the Sugar Hill Gang on their way back from Glastonbury festival. Absolute legends! 8. If you weren’t working at the airport what would you do? I’ve always wanted to be in a uniformed service such as the armed forces or fire service. 9. W hat is your favourite aircraft? My favourite aircraft still has to be either the Spitfires or Lancaster bombers which have both been revived to do anniversary shows and have both travelled through Southampton Airport at some point. 10. What is your favourite thing to do outside of work? I love a good gym session and don’t shy away from sitting on my Xbox till the early hours of the morning, polar opposite activities but I enjoy them just as much as each other!

STAFF AT THE AIRPORT WHO TRAVEL THE EXTRA MILE

BREEZE AWARD

WINNER At Southampton Airport we pride ourselves on helping to make our passenger’s journey’s as easy as possible. Our Breeze Through Awards recognise and reward those staff who go the extra mile.

BAL GILL AND CLAIRE BRAHAM (SWISSPORT) Bal and Claire went above and beyond recently to look after an elderly couple who accidentally missed their flight and panicked that they would not make it to France to see their eldest. The couple’s son wrote in to say ‘your team at Southampton were quite simply fantastic, they firstly managed to reassure my Mum that something could be sorted out, enabled her to make some telephone calls & ultimately re-booked my parents on a flight to La Rochelle that evening.’ Well done guys!

MIKE GROVES (SWISSPORT) Mike was praised recently for going out of his way to help an elderly couple back to their car in the long stay car park. The couple had forgotten to book assistance but Mike stayed on for an hour after his shift finished, to ensure they got to the car park safely and then even helped them to find their car in the car park as they couldn’t remember where they left it. A member of the Flybe cabin crew wrote in to say ‘Mike went above and beyond his role, he was patient, kind and when most people would have been in a rush to go home (we were the last flight in) he stayed and made sure the couple got away safely.’ Excellent work Mike!

STU PAVEY CELEBRATES 20 YEARS Congratulations to Stu Pavey who received his 20 years of service medal last week after joining the Southampton Airport Fire Service back in 1995. Thank you for all your hard work over the years Stu, here’s to 20 more!

Batch distilled on the Isle of Wight, Mermaid Gin has a contemporary flavour profile, smooth, fresh and invigorating with a layered complexity. This truly local spirit is made using an infusion of carefully selected botanicals to create a distinct flavour. These include hand-picked rock samphire and Boadicea hops grown at the famous Ventnor Botanic Garden, as well as juniper berries and coriander seeds.

To find out more about our investment management services, please call James Nield in our Chichester office on 01243 531 234, or Giles Marriage in our Lymington office on 01590 613 580. We can make sure you’re heading in the right direction. For more information, visit our website at www.thesis-plc.com Please remember that investing involves risk and you may not get back the amount you invest.

In total there are ten botanicals that are steeped together for 24 hours, allowing the essential oils to be released. Mermaid Gin is then rested for seven days as the flavours and aromas mellow and marry together, creating the perfect gin. Serve up in your G&T, simply add a juniper berry or two and a slice of cucumber.

Munich

As Germany is THE birthplace of the Christmas market, Düsseldorf is a must - the Rhine turns into a magical festive world staged across seven locations simultaneously. At the Christmas market on Marktplatz the market stretches across the square as crafts men and women demonstrate their skills and offer their wares. Hop on a restored 100-year-old merry-go-round and see the hand-carved life-sized manger of Bethlehem. The hut facades on Flinger Strasse will be modelled on Düsseldorf’s old town houses to create a unique harmonious ensemble and see the dream setting of crystals and sparkling stars that make up “Sternchenmarkt” (“Little Star Market”) at Stadtbrückchen. You’ll also want to make sure you warm yourselves up at the traditional mulled-wine pyramid located on Heinrich-Heine-Platz.

Munich is home to the oldest Christmas market in the city with origins reported to date back to the 14th century. With 20,000 square metres of booths and craft stalls from numerous vendors, the Christmas Market still retains its traditional Bavarian character offering a variety of handmade items. You’ll also find over 160 stalls of culinary delights that include baked apples, gingerbread and homemade specialties like Bratwurst. In the Marienplatz Town Hall children between the ages of 6 and 12 can have fun with arts and crafts or baking Christmas cookies at the ”Heavenly Workshop”, and from the balcony of the Town Hall, Christmas carols are performed by Bavarian musicians and singers every evening at 5.30 p.m (December 24th at 12 noon).

Traditional Bavarian Celebrations

Market dates: 27th Nov to 24th Dec 2017

With nearly 350 festive stalls spread across the city centre, this Christmas market is one of the largest in the UK and winds through Manchester’s most eye-catching streets and squares. It is famous for serving a traditional bratwurst, however you can also treat yourself to Hungarian goulash, Spanish paella or a good old-fashioned hog roast. Soak up the atmosphere and follow the market trail as it winds through the city centre, tempting you with gifts, crafts, jewellery, clothes and toys. European and local producers offer everything from fine amber jewellery, handcrafted leather bags and top-quality bonsai trees, to handmade Belgian kitchenware, framed photo prints and French soaps. The city feels magical under the warm glow of twinkling lights and you can celebrate with the sounds live music and aromas of festive delicacies.

A sea of possibilities Dream of taking your friends and family away on a yacht?

It’s an exciting prospect, but a big responsibility too. Professional tuition is one way to gain the skills and confidence needed to take charge of a yacht and its crew abroad. RYA Day Skipper is a popular course enabling students to skipper either a motor cruiser (powered by an engine) or a cruising yacht (powered by sail). Taking the theory first will help get you up to speed on things like pilotage and passage making. This can be taught in a classroom or via a distant learning programme. Next is the fun part! In four days for motor and five days for sail you’ll learn all aspects of skippering a yacht; sail trim, stern-to mooring, pilotage, passage planning, anchoring and safety management on board; all with the safe assurance of RYA-qualified instructor to guide and encourage you. Becoming an RYA Day Skipper means you have the ability to skipper a yacht and crew in safe waters by day. Your qualification allows you to apply for an ICC (International Certificate of Competence) which you will need if you plan to travel abroad. It’s quite an adventure, but one that could lead to a whole new way to travel. To find a course or look for an RYA recognised training centre near you: visit rya.org.uk/go/ wheresmynearest

Prices start from £25 for the year and include a photograph of your chosen primate, a certificate, three editions of the Ape Rescue Chronicle and free entry to the park for a year! The Monkey World online gift shop also has great gift ideas to supplement your adoption, such as clothing, mugs and prints of your chosen primate!

SEASONAL FOOD & DRINK Treat your guests to a feast bursting with Hampshire flavour. With such a vibrant local food scene in the county you don’t need to go far to find quality meats, wines, spirits, cheese, chocolate and more.

Ashford Farm ©Kim Taylor Photography

For a local bird try Ashford Farm near Petersfield or Cobley Wood near Ringwood where thousands of turkeys have been reared with fresh air and views of the idyllic Hampshire countryside. You can book your turkey well in advance to save a last minute panic nearer to Christmas. For those in search of an alternative to turkey, try local grass-fed buffalo from Broughton, delicious slow roasted or served as steaks. Trout from the beautiful clear waters of the River Test and Itchen make a delicious change from meat. Fresh seasonal vegetables will always taste better the less miles they have travelled. Pick them up from a local farm shop or farmers’ market or arrange a veg box delivery from a company such as Boxxfresh.

taste

In recent years Hampshire has built up an impressive drinks cabinet of wines, beers, ciders, spirits and liqueurs. Many of the vineyards, breweries and distilleries are open for tours and tastings so leave yourself with time to do some pre-Christmas research and try before you buy. Round off your Christmas indulgence with award-winning cheese from Lyburn, Hampshire Cheese, Chalke Valley or Two Hoots. For the sweet-toothed try a box of chocolates from Winchester Cocoa, Thorpe Confectionary, Chocolate by Miss Witt or New Forest Chocolates.
