History in the City >>

Family fun times Itinerary 2

Start your day as you mean to go on and use up some energy. For water babies the obvious choice is

A fascinating past

The Quays, featuring a great fun pool with jets and a whirlpool. Also boasting Olympic standard diving and swimming pools, this centre has it all. If you prefer a dry option, head for the Alpine Centre, where you can try out skiing or the madness of Ringo’s, giant donuts that speed you down the slopes.

Southampton has welcomed tourists for nearly a thousand years. Its popularity began as a place of pilgrimage in the twelfth century due to being on the route to Canterbury. After the murder of Thomas Becket King Henry II travelled from his lands in France and landed at Southampton, where he had a castle. From there he journeyed onto Canterbury to make his own pilgrimage as atonement for his role in Becket’s death. Pilgrims wanting to follow the route the king had taken, started to flood into Southampton.

You can keep the kids happy at lunch time, with a vast array of themed restaurants, including TGI Friday’s at WestQuay Retail Park and La Margherita at Town Quay. Walk off lunch and visit The Hawthorns Centre, where both young and old will be amazed by the variety of wildlife that is on our doorstep. This fantastic biodiversity centre lets you interact with all the creatures you’d expect to find and some you wouldn’t!

During the Victorian period, the port of Southampton grew and the celebrated White Star shipping line moved its headquarters to the city. It was from here that RMS Titanic set sail on her ill-fated maiden voyage in April 1912. The story of Titanic will feature part of the new SeaCity Museum which will open in April 2012, 100 years after the event.

If you need a rest later in the day, why not take in a film at Odeon cinema in Leisure World, or Cineworld or Harbour Lights Picture House at Ocean Village. If you would prefer a family musical or play, head for The Mayflower Theatre, where West End shows come to life.

Old Town New Discoveries Southampton’s Old Town is just to the south of the city centre. This magical part of the city boasts famous residents and visitors including the Pilgrim Fathers, William the Conqueror, Jane Austen and even Shakespeare who it is claimed visited the Dolphin Hotel and performed in the courtyard. Visit the Old Town at night on one of the famous Ghost Tours to reveal the spirits of the area!
