Hopefully you will have noticed the ongoing improvements to the terminal including; both new seating in the main terminal and in the departure lounge, a new Costa Coffee pod in the departure lounge plus a new special assistance desk and hosted seating area to make sure every passenger can breeze through the airport. Earlier this year we held our first ever Summer Solstice Sprint on our very own runway to raise funds for Sophie’s Appeal. 400 people turned up at 6:00am for the run and overall we were able to raise a staggering £6,000. Lapland A real-life winter wonderland
Stepping off the plane into Lapland is the closest you could get to walking through the wardrobe in to Narnia. The snow paints a truly picturesque picture with white peaked mountains and trees laden with snow.
ell known for being the home of Father Christmas and where Christmas dreams come true, Lapland is definitely a wonderful family experience. Dash through the snow on a sleigh pulled by reindeer, a toboggan or a snowmobile and meet the man himself, his trusty elves and Mary Christmas. This is far from the only reason to visit Lapland. It’s also a great destination for skiing and snowboarding to suit the beginner and more experienced mountaingoers. Enjoy the thrill of snowmobiling or really “chill-out” with a float down an arctic river in an arctic suit. But if the winter sports aren’t for you, there are plenty of other great things to do in what’s best described as a winter playground! Take a trip to see the reindeer in their natural habitat and let them whisk you into the woods on a sleigh or go to husky heaven and mush your own team of huskies through the pristine countryside. Walking is also a great way to see some of Lapland’s best sights. Of course be careful of your footing and make sure

you stick to the walking paths - you may just find yourself waist deep in snow! Exhausted from a fun-packed day, the evenings are the time for relaxing when the snow turns to glitter in the moonlight. Outside of the resorts you can walk for hours without sight of a single person but if its nightlife you are after then hire a sled and glide your way in to town where you’ll find a good selection of bars and restaurants. When you are ready to turn in for the night there are several accommodation options for staying in Lapland. Choose between an apartment in one of the main ski resorts, hire a chalet or log cabin or sleep under the stars in a glass igloo. The heated glass roof and adjustable bed provide a comfortable position from which to see the Northern Lights unspoilt views and perfect for a romantic break. Lapland’s extraordinary nature, diverse activities and fascinating attractions make for a unique holiday offering winter magic for all. The experience is simply unforgettable!

Romance in the snow! To many Lapland is known for being the home of Father Christmas and a ski retreat, but for some it’s the perfect setting for romance as Laura, one of the writers for Breeze reveals: “We stumbled across a great deal on a log cabin in Ruka, Lapland flying from Southampton and despite the fact neither of us ski or snowboard, we decided it looked like the ideal location to explore. When we arrived at our log cabin it was idyllic. Located just out of the main resort it offered us the perfect location for some ‘us’ time with a welcoming log fire and our own sauna. “Everywhere we went we were taken back by its beauty, it was simply stunning! spotting and would often not see a single person the whole time we were exploring. One day we packed up a picnic and made our way down to a frozen lake. As we finished our lunch the clouds rolled across the sky and the sun beamed through like a perfect picture. To my surprise and delight this was the moment my boyfriend of 7 years chose to get down on one knee and asked me to marry him – of course I said yes! Lapland will always hold a special place in our hearts for more than one reason.”

Log cabins are great, but just make sure you get the right size. The maximum occupants can be a bit of a squeeze, so if you’re a group of 4 you may be better opting for the 5-7 person cabins rather than the 2-4. Lapland is cold - don’t underestimate it and take plenty of layers. Book activities early - they do get popular, especially Father Christmas excursions, so book in advance to avoid disappointment. You’ll get tired - trudging through snow and doing activities is very tiring, make sure you rest up so you can enjoy the following day. Stick to the paths – the snow is deep and although great fun, wandering from the paths can lead you into waist deep snow!

England’s Christmas Capital Winchester is a must-visit destination for all those wishing to experience a traditional Christmas. The city justly claims to be England’s Christmas Capital and its Cathedral is at the heart of the festivities with a stunning Christmas Market and Real Ice rink dominating its beautiful and historic Close. All are welcome to attend the services which are popular, attracting over 10,000 people a year. Winchester at Christmas is buzzing with excitement. Retailers, hoteliers, restaurants and bars, all eager to stand out from the crowd, strive to offer the best in a city that sparkles brightly for Christmas. The long-established Cathedral Choir is internationally acclaimed, with 12 Lay Clerks and 22 boy choristers who are educated at The Pilgrims’ School in Winchester. At Christmas time, the choristers can often be seen skating on the ice rink in the Cathedral Close – an image that has become synonymous with Christmas in Winchester. But it isn’t all music and play, the boys work hard for their music scholarship, singing at six services a week during term time with a rehearsal before each service. We spoke to some of the choristers from The Pilgrims’ School about their role in the choir and school life: Which Christmas song is your favourite to perform? The cool version of Jingle Bells (where we use our voices to make percussion noises) – it’s a lot more fun than the traditional arrangement. The Twelve Days
of Christmas, because it gets faster and faster and is really good fun to sing. It also has some great scrunchy chords when we sing “Five gold rings” The best thing about being a chorister at Winchester Cathedral? Christmas Choir Time! We go on fun trips and ice-skate in our cassocks - we have the whole rink to ourselves so we can really get up some speed. We get to go inside the Wykeham Arms in Winchester to sing carols for charity - there are so many people in there that you can hardly move! The Carol Services are unforgettable; we sing to thousands of people, which is very exciting, especially if you are the one singing the solo verse of Once in Royal David’s City. On Christmas Eve we put on a Choristers’ Cabaret and on Christmas Day we have stockings, give each other presents and eat a massive Christmas lunch with turkey, crackers and Christmas pudding at school with all our families. Apart from being in the choir, what do you enjoy most about Pilgrims’ School? The sport! We play lots of sport and compete in matches, as well as doing all our music.
And what’s been the best moment as a Chorister? Singing in the Proms … twice!

Tom Burden, Headmaster of The Pilgrims’ School “What sort of boy are you looking for, Mr Burden - what kind of boy do you think will thrive here?” This is a question I am often asked by visiting parents, to which I have no short reply and no wish ever to find one. Both the school and its boys defy neat labelling, and I am delighted. This is a school whose strengths stem from its complexities. I don’t believe in a narrow intellectual elite - and yet we have an impressive history of extraordinary academic attainment. We have two professional choirs and many exceptional instrumentalists but you don’t have to be remotely musical to belong and to have the best time here. Sport is a major part of what most boys enjoy about life at Pilgrims’ - but participation and enjoyment of the game is key, at every level, so no boy need ever feel excluded. We are by choice a boys only school – and here at least I can be unequivocal! Having worked for many years in co-ed schools, I am a firm believer that a boys only education works best, certainly at this age. First-time visitors are often surprised by what they find (me included): we are right in the heart of the city, in the beautifully secluded Cathedral Close, yet we are surrounded by open space and leafy vistas. “Comfortable in their own skin” is an observation I often hear of our older boys, and one with which I totally agree. Our boys are motivated and engaged with their education, but above all they are individual, their own person. I want this school to continue to help develop impressive characters: I want your sons to be kind and happy, confident and determined, and to have integrity and manners. Academic work is important; skills are important; a rounded experience of sport, music, art, and drama (and much else) is important. But personality is the most significant quality of all. Pilgrims’ is a school that escapes easy summary. Good. It should be like that. And I hope that the Pilgrims’ boy escapes easy summary as well, except to say that he is the best that he can be, in all regards, and is at ease with himself. If you have not visited already, please do, you will be very welcome – and you know not to expect any short answers to your questions!

The Charm of Christmas Markets An essential festive attraction that guarantees to get you into the Christmas spirit is the ever-popular Christmas Market. The aroma of mulled wine and incense amidst quaint little wooden huts decorated with pretty fairy lights, selling traditional crafts and tasty delicacies from local artisans really does evoke the atmosphere of advent. Originating in Germany, Christmas markets can be found in many towns and cities across the UK and Europe, some happen just over a weekend and others last for six-weeks or more. In fact, on our doorstep we have the truly amazing market set within Winchester Cathedral’s historic Inner Close. If you think Christmas markets are the same - think again.
During Advent, Düsseldorf is an exciting mix of Christmas markets and shopping delights with over 200 decorated huts which form part of different theme worlds across the city. With crystals that break the light into thousands of colours and sparkling stars, the “Sternchenmarkt” (“Little Star Market”) at the Stadtbrückchen is idyllically located in the courtyard of the Wilhelm-Marx-Haus. On Marktplatz in front of the historic town hall, numerous nostalgic huts offer arts and crafts. The Engelchenmarkt (Little Angels Market) in the art-nouveau style Heinrich-Heine-Platz, provides a ‘heavenly’ atmosphere with floral motifs and angels adorned on the market huts. On Flinger Strasse, Christmas ware is presented in small hand-painted reproductions of historic middle-class houses. You must: take a stroll along the worldfamous Königsallee and see the giant chestnut trees which sparkle with thousands of lights. Markets open: from 19th November to 23rd December.

Whether you want to shop with the Eiffel Tower or Notre Dame as your backdrop or prefer to meander the stalls of a typically French boulevard, Paris has many Christmas markets to choose from. You’ll find the largest Christmas market on the Avenue des Champs-Elysées. Along with the stunning illuminations on what is considered to be the world’s most beautiful avenue, there are no less than 160 authentic chalets that line the Champs-Elysées for festive trinkets, carols, crafts and gifts. Pick up a Vin Chaud, a hot crepe and sit back and take in the wonderful atmosphere that Paris has to offer at this time of year. Renting a car?
Know before you go! We all want our car rental experiences to be as smooth as possible. Being confident that every detail is sorted in your mind before you walk into battle at the rental counter is an essential part of this process.
All car-rental companies will argue these items are to provide peace of mind; but remember, they are not mandatory so make your own judgement before signing. If you’re driving on business, check your organisations HR and expense policy before committing yourself to any undue extra expense. Here are some insider tips from Adrian Williams at Amity Travel Management. There are a host of business, leisure and prepaid car rental deals to choose from. Unless you’re using a specific corporate deal, your rate will always include mandatory taxes, insurances and fees, meaning everything necessary for legal compliance is covered and there is no absolute requirement to sign for extras. At the rental counter you will, however, almost certainly be offered a range of additional services at extra cost; indeed the rental agreement may be prepopulated with some extras which you will need to positively “sign-to-decline” should you choose to do so. Examples include: CDW Excess Reduction • Personal Accident Insurance • Windscreen Protection • Portable Sat Nav unit • Enhanced Roadside Assistance ( e.g. tyre damage, lost keys etc.)
Driving Licence. With effect from 8th June 2015, the UK Paper Counterpart licence was replaced with a digital database. You may need to obtain a code from DVLA in order to share your personal information with your car rental company. Visit www.gov.uk/ view-driving-licence for details. Refuelling. Most operators want their car returned with a full tank of fuel and will charge a premium refuelling rate if it is not (keep the receipt from your refill, just in case) - but there are variations to this rule. Be sure you understand the refuelling policy of your rental company before you drive away. Upgrades. Occasionally, rental depots run short of compact/intermediate cars and are obliged to supply vehicles from a higher group. If you are offered an unexpected upgrade, be very sure it is complimentary and not an “upsell” before you sign the agreement and hand over your credit card.
Vehicle Damage. Rental companies don’t hesitate to send out post-rental claims for damage to alloy wheels and bodywork, especially if you declined their excess waiver option. If you have a smart phone it’s sensible to take a photo of each wheel before you drive away. Check also that any pre-existing bodywork scratches/dents are acknowledged on the rental agreement and take photographic evidence in case of future argument. Local Fines. Driving a rental car is not like wearing a 4-wheel invisibility cloak! In today’s digital age you can be sure that parking and speed camera penalty notices will catch up with you. Check the local driving laws (including alcohol limits) for your particular destination before you drive. Staff at the airport who travel the extra mile June 2015 – Dean Bowden and Alfred Jones (Enterprise) A family with young children were faced with a long wait at the airport after their flight was cancelled one evening. Dean and Alfred went above and beyond their call of duty and contacted various hotels to find them a place to stay for the night. They even drove the family to their hotel at the end of their shift before going home. Their kindness and professionalism is a real credit to Enterprise and Southampton Airport.

July 2015 – Tim Sutton (Swissport) Tim went out of his way and showed outstanding customer service when dealing with a customer who was stranded in the UK without a passport after rapidly flying over for a family emergency. Tim then personally drove her to the ferry terminal in Portsmouth and the passenger was able to make her way home safely and got in touch to tell us how overwhelmed she was by his generosity.

August 2015 – Jade Conduct (Swissport) Jade showed exceptional customer service when dealing with a passenger who had just undergone major knee surgery. She ensured that she met the customer at the door and did everything within her power to make their transition through the airport as comfortable as possible. Jade even went above and beyond in helping the customer with some food and a drink when they needed to take their pain medication. The passenger got in touch to say “Words can’t accurately describe how at ease Jade made me feel during what was a very stressful time for me”.

1. Pack the kitchen sink – well not quite. The beauty of cruising (providing you are embarking/disembarking at Southampton) means there is no baggage allowance, so as long as it can fit in your cabin, pack it! 2. Cash-free holiday – there’s no need to carry cash around the ship as your boarding/swipe card can be used to make purchases on board (including drinks, tours, souvenirs and optional dining costs) which is settled at the end of your cruise. 3. Emergency drill – don’t be alarmed when you are called to a Muster Drill before you set sail. It’s a requirement of maritime law and is compulsory for all guests to attend to familiarise yourself with the ships safety procedures. 4. Walk-a-mile – burn off the excesses of the 4 course meals, afternoon cream teas and pre-dinner tipples by walking a mile in the middle of the ocean by pacing the top deck a few times. They’ll be many others joining you!
5. Plan your excursions – you’re usually only in a port for one day so make the most of it. Pre-book your excursions so you know what you are doing before you arrive. 6. Look into the dress code/themed evenings - most cruise companies have themed evenings or particular dress codes for certain nights so come prepared by knowing in advance what you need to pack. 7. Don’t forget about gratuities – as a rule they are paid to those who have served you in the main restaurant and your cabin steward (or any other crew member who you want to thank for their exceptional service). Refer to your cruise line for more information on how this is paid as most do it via your on board account. 8. Relax and let the ship take you on a holiday of a lifetime.

Manchester Manchester
When considering a city break, it’s always good to go on personal recommendations – it can help to save time in finding the best places to dine in, the undiscovered attractions and more intriguing cultural venues. Manchester may not be an obvious choice for a city break, but with a flight time of 65 minutes from Southampton it made perfect sense to one of the Marketing team at Southampton Airport. Here Holly shares her recent visit to Manchester and her reasons to go... “A quick 15 minute train journey from the airport and I was right in the centre of Manchester at Piccadilly Station. As one of the biggest cities in the UK I was expecting travelling around Manchester to take some time but after walking to my hotel, I soon realised everything is within easy distance and on foot really is the best way to see the city. If shopping is your thing, Manchester won’t disappoint. I walked through the shopping areas (and barely scratched the surface) on my way to the meeting point for my walking tour. If only I had more time… Having never taken a walking tour before, I wasn’t sure what to expect but I found it really fascinating and at £7, it was a bargain! The tour guides are a wealth of knowledge and relay vast amounts of facts, figures and dates on the history of the city. And just for the record, my guide confirmed that it really does rain more in the north due to the increased humidity levels. As part of the tour, we stopped at The Midland Hotel where Mr Rolls and Mr Royce signed their deal and where Posh and Becks had their first date. One of my favourite parts of the tour was looking around the beautiful town hall, where visitors are not usually allowed. The main hall was a work of art with beautiful paintings across the walls and a ceiling covered in the coats of arms from the countries Manchester originally traded with. If you aren’t lucky enough to get to sneak around the town hall there is a nice café which gives you a taste of

the architecture and some very yummy cakes. I refuelled for lunch at the John Rylands library café before exploring the library itself. Home to one of the finest collections of rare books, manuscripts and archives in the world, you’ll find some fascinating works of literature including a fragment of the bible. The historic reading room looked just like a scene from Harry Potter. To get to my next destination, I simply had to take the tram. So I jumped on board to Old Trafford. No trip to Manchester would be complete without visiting one of the stadiums and I opted for the bigger of the two. As a non-Man Utd fan I felt a little weird entering Old Trafford, especially considering how passionate the other people on the tour were but I really enjoyed the experience. The stadium was incredible and the pitch looked like a lush green carpet (just as well as they’d just spent £1 million on it and sprayed it with garlic and yes, it was fragrant!) We learnt of the stadium’s history, taken around the only remaining original part following it’s bombing in the Second World War as well as the VIP bar, press room and compared the very obvious differences between the home and away changing rooms! I ambled back to the city centre past The Quays and saw The Lowry, Imperial War Museum North and MediaCityUK, home of the BBC. I certainly worked up an appetite and as a lover of all things barbecued, I chose to dine at Red’s True Barbeque, just opposite Albert Square. The menu is extensive and after much deliberation, I went for the beef long rib and along with my chosen sides it looked like a Man vs Food challenge. The food was delicious (complemented by the smoked Manhattan cocktail which was recommended), the atmosphere buzzing yet relaxed and the staff’s passion for what they do really shone through. The following morning, I joined the hustle and bustle of rush hour to head to the National Football Museum. This modern museum is free to enter and is home to some fantastic memorabilia from old footballs, original Wembley Connect with us
turnstiles and trophies as well as fun hands-on interactive displays. It’s a must-see for any footie fan, adults and children alike! At full time, I jumped aboard one of the free metro shuttle buses (which run every 10 minutes throughout the city centre) and made my way to the Manchester Museum. Again, it was free entry and displayed ancient Egyptian artefacts and a large natural history exhibition with numerous stuffed animals (and some vivarium’s housing snakes and frogs if you want to see some alive ones too)
as well as an immense T-Rex skeleton. Manchester really is a great city to walk around and where incredible old architecture kisses modern masterpieces. And it’s true what they say about people being friendlier the further north you go! I will definitely be planning another trip but don’t just take my word for it, come and experience it for yourself!”
