To launch our new weekday flights to Antwerp from Southampton, we hosted a diamond-themed party for our passengers and VIPs. The inaugural flight was greeted with a water arch, courtesy of the Airport Fire Service and we held a great diamond giveaway to celebrate Antwerp’s title as the diamond capital of the world - including the chance to win a diamond flown in especially from Antwerp. Congratulations to our winners Mike Edwards, Kate Berry, Fiona Picot and Michele Tenray.

Solstice Sprint On the longest day of the year around 350 runners were up bright and early to help raise money for a local charity, Sophie’s Appeal. The 6am start did not dampen the spirits and we had some wonderful fancy dress runners including beach babes, super heroes, an American Indian and ballet dancers. The 5k run was a real success and many people were home in time for breakfast.

Chambery

Fly with Flybe to Chambery Airport for your gateway to the French Alps - one of the top skiing destinations. Within easy driving distance, you can be on the slopes of one of the most spectacular mountain chains in the world giving you access to resorts in France, Switzerland and Italy. You’ll find the charming villages of La Clusaz, Courchevel, Alpe d’Huez, Chamonix and Val d’Isère offer hundreds of miles of runs with many resorts connected, especially good if you like to travel many miles a day and not ski the same run. The resorts are great for families too with family friendly accommodation, English speaking ski instructors and equally good restaurants to refuel after a day on the piste. Ski and snowboard holiday experts Inghams and Esprit Ski will create a package to suit your needs.

Innsbruck

Home to the Bergisel ski jump that stands at 47metres tall and host of the Winter Olympics twice, Innsbruck is an impressive place located at the foot of the Alps offering many ski activities around the five hills surrounding the city. The world famous ski resort Nordkette and Olympia SkiWorld are perhaps the most famous, and in addition to the skiing, offer winter sports of a different kind with tobogganing, ice skating, ice hockey, bobsleighing, figure skating and more. Equally famous are the slopes around Seefeld, Tulfes, and Stubai Valley with adventurous opportunities for all lovers of the white stuff. With resorts so close it means you can be on the slopes within a few hours of leaving your Flybe flight from Southampton. The sleek, slick and cosmopolitan Swiss capital offers plenty of variety from quiet smaller, undiscovered gems of the Alps to large bustling ski resorts including the internationally known Chamonix, Les Gets and Flaine, all overlooked by Mont Blanc – the highest mountain in Western Europe. The mountains offer a good selection of restaurants, bars and cafés. So once you’ve reached the summit, cosy up on a terrace or balcony and watch the alpine life go by with a hot chocolate (or something stronger) before flying down the slopes yourself. If you fancy treating your legs to a rest, travel across the Switzerland-France border and ride a cable car to the summit of Aiguille du Midi for an incredible Alpine panorama — the views will take your breath away.

hatever your skiing ability and whoever you’re W travelling with, there’s a resort waiting your arrival departing from Southampton. So while others are enjoying a typical British winter, you can be carving up the fresh snow of the Alps. From the slow and steady descents to the adrenaline-pumping, near vertical drops, here are some basic tips that will ensure you have a safe and successful ski trip: Take a rucksack . The weather changes in the mountains all the time so carry a rucksack with extra layers, something to drink and a piste map. Buddy up . It’s safer and more fun skiing with somebody. So enjoy the experience together and head out with a skiing buddy. That way, if you get into trouble, there is someone with you to help. Wear a helmet . Even the best skiers fall over from time to time, so be sure to protect your head by wearing a helmet. No longer considered uncool, most skiers wear them. Get insured . As a winter sports traveller, make sure you are adequately insured. Learn the lingo!

If you want to blend in to the ski life, you’ll need to throw these into your conversations:

sick – great. stoked – psyched. stomped landed a jump well. pow - deep snow. freshies - skiing virgin snow. 9

Sailing like you’ve never seen it before Sir Keith Mills, Chairman of Team Origin, organisers of the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series, explains why America’s Cup investment could revolutionise the British marine industry. The founder of the Air Miles and Nectar consumer reward schemes, Sir Keith Mills has delivered one of Britain’s greatest ever sporting events. As Deputy Chairman of LOCOG (the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games), working alongside Lord Coe, he brought the Olympics to London in 2012. He also worked alongside HRH Prince Harry to create last year’s Invictus Games for injured service personnel. However, as a passionate yachtsman, his next challenge may be his most personal yet: the America’s Cup. The America’s Cup is the oldest trophy in sport. It was first contested by a race around the Isle of Wight in 1851, but Great Britain has never won it. Sir Ben Ainslie’s ‘BAR’ team is setting out to change all that, with a challenge skippered by the fivetimes Olympic medal winner. “The idea of the America’s Cup World Series is to build the base of supporters around the world and raise awareness of the sport in the lead up to the finals in 2017. From a British perspective, this is the first time America’s Cup racing has been held in the Solent since 1851. We’ve got to get the whole of the UK behind the team, in the

14

same way as we did with the Olympic Games, so when the finals come around in 2017 literally everybody is on the edge of their seats cheering on the British team.” Long-term strategy: The impact on Portsmouth and the surrounding area will go far beyond the events that took place this July. “The strategy has not just been as a short-term sports team. We have long-term, 25-year plans. That’s why we’ve built this extraordinary base in Old Portsmouth, which we hope will be a revolution in the city and the South Coast, where the presence of a team like BAR can start to create the sort of impact that Formula One has had in the UK “The technology that is being applied to the America’s Cup team is cutting-edge and can be applied to many other aspects of the marine industry. For instance an America’s Cup boat can race at 2.8 times the speed of the wind. So if the wind is blowing at 10mph an America’s Cup boat can race at 28 miles an hour, the technology that makes that happen is quite extraordinary! Business decisions: Is Sir Keith’s involvement a business decision – or a personal passion? Both, he says: “When people like me get behind projects like the America’s Cup, you generally make the decision with the left and the right-hand sides of the brain! I would love in my lifetime to see us bring the America’s Cup home to this country, it’s something I’m passionate about, and it’s the last major sporting challenge this country has to achieve.

“But on the other side of the brain, I’m also a businessman who owns, and runs and has started many businesses, with a view to making profit. And I think if we do this properly, and we bring together the team that we have – in people like Martin Whitmarsh, the ex-CEO of McLaren – then we can build a very successful business as well. So many of the companies we’re talking to now are not just looking at the team as a traditional branding sponsorship opportunity, but are also looking at ways in which they can work with our designers, and their own technologists, to use some of the technology that we have to improve their businesses.” “The America’s Cup has been around since 1851, and it’s never been like this before! This is very different, very special and will capture the imagination of the British public.”

CRUISENews

Luxury in the Heart of the City

As new figures reveal, the number of cruise passengers travelling through Southampton’s port is set to rise to 1.75m by the end of the year. The excellent transport links to and from Southampton Airport to the port make it easy to fly into Southampton Airport to join your cruise and then return home.

  

Southampton cruises ahead Breeze takes a look behind the scenes….. Driving into ABP’s Port of Southampton it’s instantly clear that the city is fast becoming one of the biggest cruise capitals in the world. Magnificent cruise ships 230ft tall seem to reach into the sky and, on a sunny summer Saturday, up to 40,000 excited holidaymakers pass through the gates to embark on their on-water vacations.

22

a capacity for almost 5,000 passengers at a time, Anthem of the Seas offers everything from virtual skydiving and circus training to surfing simulators and an aerial observatory, The North Star, which can reach up to 300 feet above the ocean.

With Southampton’s port holding the titles of the UK’s leading cruise port, Europe’s number one turnaround cruise port and the UK’s best departure port, it’s easy to see why it attracts some of the biggest and best cruise ships afloat.

With bigger and better ships being built every year and an increase in the number of passengers embarking on them, ABP, which owns the port, is investing heavily in its cruise facilities. Earlier this year the Mayflower Cruise Terminal reopened after a £6m refurbishment project and one of its sister terminals, City Cruise Terminal, is now one of the most technologically advanced in the UK following a makeover in the winter.

Royal Caribbean, P&O Cruises, Cunard, Princess Cruises and Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines are just some of the world-leading cruise operators that use the port and regular callers include The Queen Mary 2, Ventura and brand-new P&O Cruises ship, Britannia.

Looking to the future, Southampton’s port has no signs of slowing down when it comes to cruising. Two brand new ships, Norwegian Escape and Ovation of the Seas are set to call in late 2015 / early 2016 and AidaPrima is set to visit the city on a weekly basis throughout 2016.

This year has seen some new visitors to Southampton, including the world’s third-largest cruise ship, Royal Caribbean’s Anthem of the Seas. With 16 decks and

Patrick Marty is an inspiring chef who is keen to promote the cuisine of Périgord in the Dordogne at his restaurant Le Moulin du Pont. Visit www.moulin-du-pont.com for more information on the restaurant and the holiday apartments. Tell us about your restaurant, Le Moulin du Pont in Lisle? Ideally situated on the banks of the river Dronne, I had always dreamed of converting my grandfather’s flourmill into a restaurant. In 1988 after completing my studies at the Ecole Hotelière in Bordeaux and three years working for Club Med in Europe and Africa, my dream became reality. I have always been passionate about food and it has been a long journey from when I started selling crêpes on the beach opposite the mill when I was a boy for pocket money! Now, as members of the Dordogne’s association of restaurants the Toques du Périgord, we serve traditional Périgordinestyle food using local products and suppliers. What makes your restaurant different and unique? We have a beautiful terrace right on the riverbank overlooking the weir and the stone bridge. It’s always beautiful whatever time of the day with the damsel flies flitting over the water and the ever changing landscape of the river right before your eyes. After eating, guests can take a walk in our park which is

www.southamptonairport.com

bordered by the river and the mill streams. Locally, we are well known for our fresh trout, fished daily from our own trout farm. We serve it with a sorrel sauce, grilled almonds or a large fillet topped with a creamy cèpes mushroom sauce. What inspires you when cooking? I love cooking with products that are in season when the flavours really are at their best, and picking up hints during my travels in the winter, bringing back spices and different influences from across the world to mix with traditional Dordogne ingredients. What do you love about the The Dordogne? I love the extraordinary richness in culture, history and variety of landscape we have in the Dordogne. With the Périgord vert, blanc, pourpre and noir (green, white, purple and black) the area is one of the most diverse in France with something for everyone from rolling valleys and forests to its wonderful meandering rivers dotted with fairytale castles. The selection of fresh local products is incredible too with fantastic duck, wild mushrooms, strawberries, truffles and of course foie gras to name but a few. What top 3 dishes would you recommend to someone travelling to the Dordogne for the first time? Don’t miss the cèpes mushrooms, be it in an omelette, served in a sauce, with potatoes or

simply as a side dish. The famous Dordogne strawberries are fantastic with a taste of the sun that explodes with flavour in each mouthful. And no visit would be complete without sampling the Dordogne’s famous duck, be it in the form of foie gras, magret (duck breast) or confit (slow cooked preserved duck leg) – don’t go home without trying some or the local Bergerac wines!

Did you know? •

With over 5000 km of hiking trails, 7 golf courses and a huge availability on water activities, The Dordogne is the perfect destination for life outdoors. It is most famous for producing the finest black truffles which in winter are often called the ‘Diamonds of Périgord’.

As the General Manager, what is currently keeping you busy? During the summer we’re incredibly busy with domestic and international cricket fixtures and recently hosted the New Zealand One Day International, with Australia still to visit in September! How often do you breeze through Southampton Airport on business? I’ve been fortunate to be involved with the pre-opening of the DoubleTree by Hilton Liverpool so flew to Manchester on a weekly basis, before making the short journey to Liverpool. As a frequent business traveller – what is important to you?

Staff at the airport who travel the extra mile

The ability to check in pre-arrival, which is even better with the ability to use your phone as a boarding pass, and timely departures! How does the Ageas Hilton cater for the business traveller? As a business traveller myself, I have a great understanding of what’s important to me – a spacious room with sufficient working space, a great breakfast and welcoming staff. What are your top tips for business travellers? Always keep a suitcase packed! I tend to keep one bag with the travel essentials ready to go!

March 2015 - Sam Newman Mckie (Checker Cars) Sam showed outstanding customer service when helping a passenger in distress. A lady was unable to find her purse when she realised she had left it at home back in Glasgow, leaving her with no funds at all for her onward travel. Sam managed to find another friendly passenger to share his taxi with her to the Red Jet terminal and gave the passenger £15 from her own pocket for her to buy her ticket to the Isle of Wight. The passenger got in touch to say “Without this member of staff, I would have most likely have been stranded last night. So again, thank you so so much to this lady - you really saved me last night!”

At Southampton Airport we pride ourselves on helping to make our passengers journey as easy as possible. Our Breeze Through Awards recognise and reward those staff who go the extra mile.

April 2015 Lewis Bowers (Rosewood) Lewis went above and beyond the call of duty when assisting two ramp colleagues from the airport’s baggage handlers Swissport, when an Alicante to Southampton service arrived at 23:45. Without hesitation he assisted the Swissport team in off loading all of the baggage for this delayed inbound service.

Has anyone at Southampton Airport gone the extra mile for you? If you’d like to recognise an exceptional member of staff, please tell us at: www.southamptonairport.com/feedback

May 2015 - Kim Vaughn (Swissport) A teenage boy with severe learning difficulties had been brought to the airport by a taxi driver. Kim was assisting him when the flight was cancelled. Kim was just about to finish her shift when she heard this and was concerned about the boy as the next flight was not for another 6 hours. Kim knew he could not be left alone as he had difficulty communicating. Kim called the boy’s mother who was very distressed and then offered to stay on in her own time to look after him. She took him to Costa, bought him food and helped him to eat it as he could not manage on his own. Kim stayed chatting to him and updating his mother until she took him through to board the Newcastle flight, handing him over personally to the crew.
