elcome to our new Breeze Summer edition. It gives me great pleasure to announce that 2016 will see the launch of the most new airlines and new routes from Southampton airport for 10 years! There has never been a better time to fly from your convenient regional Airport rather than facing the hassle of flying from London. Our recent new airlines include Aer Lingus to Cork, bmi regional double daily jet service to Munich, Volotea scheduled services to Majorca and a new double daily jet service to Amsterdam with KLM. Most importantly, the routes to Munich and Amsterdam open up further new worldwide connections from Southampton. For instance, did you know that you can now reach more direct destinations in China from Amsterdam than flying from Heathrow? In addition to all these fantastic new airlines, Flybe have added more routes to France including Lyon, Biarritz and Toulon. 2016 is therefore certainly going to provide even more opportunity and choice from Southampton Airport. Relax and enjoy your journey wherever you are flying today.

We just wanted to say a massive thank you to everyone who voted us number 1 in the recent Sudocrem Baby Changing Room Awards. Southampton Airport was praised for its high number of clean and spacious facilities, which offer a comfortable changing mat in a calm environment, and plenty of room to move around and stow a pram. Our Sudocrem award now has pride of place in our landside baby changing room so make sure you pop in to see it as well as our award winning facilities! Connect with us

Exciting news, on top of our recently announced route with KLM to Amsterdam with worldwide connections, we now also welcome 2 new worldwide codeshares with Virgin Atlantic and Lufthansa. You can now fly up to Manchester with Flybe and connect with Virgin Atlantic to destinations such as Barbados and Orlando and can fly to Munich with bmi regional and use a Lufthansa codeshare to connect to Sweden, Switzerland, Italy and other worldwide destinations. We have officially launched our 2016 Runway Run which is due to take place on the airport’s runway at 6am on Sunday 26th June 2016. The run is 5km in length and members of the public are invited to enter. This year all proceeds will go directly to our Charity of the Year, Where There’s a Will, a local Southampton charity which supports patients, as well as their family and friends, whilst they are on the General Intensive Care Unit (GICU) at Southampton General Hospital. For more information and to register for the Runway Run please visit: www.southamptonairport.com/run www.southamptonairport.com

A big welcome to our newest airline, bmi regional with their new twice daily jet service to Munich. Scheduled air services to Munich have been one of our most requested by businesses in the local region. Munich is also a key destination for leisure tourists who want to experience the ever famous Oktoberfest to enjoy some world famous German beer. We look forward to welcoming bmi regional to Southampton Airport for what promises to be a successful route.

We constantly strive to achieve excellence in all that we do within the airport as well as with our partnerships and within our local community. Take a look at what we’ve been up to lately.

Spitfire Event March 4th this year marked the 80th anniversary of the first flight of the Spitfire which first took off from Southampton Airport in 1936 flown by Mutt Summers. We teamed up with local company, Flying with Spitfires, a new subsidiary of Boultbee flight academy at Goodwood, to make sure that the Spitfire was celebrated in style. Two fly pasts were arranged for the weekend and thousands of people travelled to viewing points along the south coast to catch a glimpse of the famous aircraft. Luckily the weather held out for just long enough that the Spitfire could make her trip for all to see! Flying with Spitfires is a new startup which aims to ensure that the world famous aircraft is still regularly seen flying over the South Coast as well as making Spitfire flight experiences more accessible to the public. If you want to book your flight alongside a Spitfire today make sure to visit their website at www.flyingwithspitfires.com

France is a beautiful country with its worldrenowned food, numerous art galleries, chic shopping, stunning coastlines and wonderful countryside. Better still, it’s right on our doorstep. A short hop across the water from Southampton Airport, it’s the perfect destination to jet off to for a beach holiday, a romantic getaway in Paris, creating childhood memories at Disney Land or a trip of cultural discovery.

What are you waiting for… 8

Did you know? • France is the most visited country in the world • France produces over 400 types of cheese • Famous French inventions include the hot air balloon, the submarine and the parachute. • For 214 years until 2012, it was illegal in Paris for women to wear trousers • Louis XIX was King of France for just 20 minutes • France uses 12 different time zones, the most of any country in the world • During WW2, when Hitler visited Paris, the French cut the lift cables on the Eiffel Tower so that Hitler would have to climb the steps if he wanted to reach the top.

Lyon – food extravaganza Discover the authentic French lifestyle in France's third largest city, Lyon. It’s a city that never sleeps with outstanding museums, bustling nightlife, wine tasting to cooking courses, sports activities and spa days to fantastic shopping – all of which make for a distinctly sophisticated summer break. It has over 2,000 years of history and one of Europe’s most extensive Renaissance neighbourhoods as well as two Roman amphitheatres, which still host concerts today. But it’s the regions passion for food that many consider Lyon the culinary capital of the world. Its unique landscape means that it has a great diversity of local produce and ingredients, which master chefs, use to serve up the best, fresh, seasonal dishes to all who dine. There's certainly no shortage of delicious spots to sample such delights from retro-chic street cafés, sunny riverside terraces to ambient converted cellars. Wherever you choose, there is fantastic flavour on each and every plate: artisan cheeses, traditional Lyonnaise food, Mediterranean and French fusion, charcuterie plates and savoury tarts to fanciful desserts, crepes and waffles – your taste buds will certainly be tantalised! Bon Appetit!

Toulon – a walker’s paradise The city of Toulon is a fascinating combination of old and new and home to France’s second-largest naval port with its submarines and warships, as well as fishing boats and ferries. Built between land and sea, it is bordered by the mountains of Coudon, Faron, Baou de Quatre Aures, Croupatier and Mount Caume and is a playground for walkers. With scenic delights of Iron Age settlements, fortresses and ruined castles, It’s perfect for a historical hike or a hearty mountainside ramble. Head to the towering and majestic Mont Faron, the city’s highest point via the cable car – the only one of a kind on the Mediterranean coast - for wonderful panoramas of the bustling harbour and promenade. And we couldn’t mention Toulon without mentioning one of the city’s most famous incarnations, its world-famous and world-dominating rugby team. It’s one of the most successful teams in the country so be sure to catch a game while you are here! www.southamptonairport.com

Biarritz – fit for royalty and the sporty Once the holiday spot for nobility, Biarritz is a beautiful and affluent coastal town on the southwestern coast and with Flybe, you can enjoy a short summer break to this enchanting city. It offers dynamic cultural life with international festivals and Basque fiestas, art exhibitions, casinos to surfing competitions and golf tournaments, shows to street theatre... there is always something going on in Biarritz. The centre of all the action is on the magnificent beach of the Grand Plage where, on a clear day, you can see Spain and the Pyrenees. Soak up the sun on the golden sands, take a walk along to the lighthouse or wander down to the old port of the west. Visit the grandest address in town – the Hotel du Palais – and envisage the likes of Queen Victoria, Ernest Hemingway and Frank Sinatra exiting the former mansion house. For a spot of glamorous retail therapy, head to the Place Clemenceau and if it’s adrenaline you are craving, Biarritz is considered one of the best spots in the world for surfing so be sure to ride the exceptional waves here. Its luxury and ageless charm coupled with the areas’ outstanding sports facilities make it a Mecca for holidaymakers and sports enthusiasts alike.

Charles de Gaulle – your gateway to Paris Charles de Gaulle airport, also known as Roissy Airport, is a gem of an airport. Named after the leader of the Free French Forces and President of France (1959-1969), its France’s largest airport and the perfect choice when flying out of Southampton to Paris. Before its construction, most travellers flew into Paris Orly but Charles de Gaulle is now one of the busiest in Europe! Situated 14 miles northeast of the centre of Paris, it only takes about 45 minutes to get to the capital, 10 minutes to Disney Land and an hour to Brussels and Lille with extensive rail and road connections. So whether you are treating the children to a magical trip to Disney, heading to Chantilly for a winning day at the races or immersing yourselves in a weekend of cultural delights at the Paris NordVillepinte exhibition centre, this is the airport to fly into.

2016 marks the anniversary of the Island’s timeless relationship with the coastline and sea. The neighbouring group of islands are steeped in history and is hosting the Channel Islands Heritage Festival from 25th March – 10th May. So board a plane from Southampton Airport and immerse yourself in the local history, culture and unique maritime environment. From castles to coastal towers, museums to guided walks you can discover the association of the Ice Age cave dwellers, Roman wrecks, famous seafarers and great shipwrecks. The Islands’ landscape and history has been shaped by the sea and what better place to start your historical journey than in the Jersey Maritime Museum in St Helier.

Jersey life

Across the Alderney

The Maritime Museum is all about seafaring, navigation and the elements, told through myths, legends and stories of the Jersey people with interactive exhibits for the more inquisitive visitor (young and old alike), which really do bring history to life. But if you prefer to discover the history for yourself, try the Ice Age Island walk or a gentle guided coastal amble and uncover the vivid past. Perhaps cycle sea to sea from St Helier on Jersey’s South Coast to Les Platons, on the North Coast, peddling passed monuments of times gone by.

Many a ship has lost the battle of Alderney’s powerful tides and rocky coastline, in particular an Elizabethan warship. Here you’ll discover a wellpreserved Roman fort, the historic harbour and the imposing Victoria breakwater to the WWII bunkers.

Get ashore in Guernsey St Peter Port is considered one of Europe’s prettiest harbour towns but in years gone by, this beautiful waterfront marina was home to smugglers, Roman settlements, German Fortifications and Norman legacy to the English Civil War. The island has an amazing amount of history waiting your discovery.

The Channel Islands’ past is just one of its many outstanding features. Breathtaking natural beauty; the perfect playground for water sports; a ramblers haven; exquisite local fare cooked by award-winning chefs; the relaxed pace of life and charm of its people and long hours of sunshine all make for perfect getaway destinations.

Canada (Vancouver)

The gateway for winter adventure With clean streets, culturally diverse suburbs, majestic mountains to rainforests, Vancouver (otherwise known as an urban centre surrounded by nature) is a city unlike any other and certainly has plenty to explore! A popular filming location, it’s a cosmopolitan city with a thriving art, theatre, music and fine dining scene. Stroll through the city’s urban wilderness, visit the aquarium, pick up tickets for a show, admire the diverse architecture in Gastown or learn of the Aboriginal culture at the Museum of Anthropology. There’s also an abundance of farms, wineries and breweries and delectable food created by award-winning chefs making this a serious place for foodie and dining connoisseurs. Whilst the city itself isn’t adorned with much snow in the winter, you don’t have to go far from the city to experience the white stuff. The trio of local mountains (Mount Seymour, Grouse Mountain and Cypress Mountain) boast ample fresh powder and played host to the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games which provides endless opportunities for skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Vancouver is the gateway for winter adventure.

Travel info: Book now at: www.klm.com www.southamptonairport.com

www.southamptonairport.com

For those that like to do it all, fly to Vancouver via Amsterdam with KLM. You must.... • Get your snow shoes on and head for the slopes of the local mountains • Say yes to Sushi - Vancouver is home to some of the best and cheapest sushi in North America. • Stroll through the lively market and browse boutiques on Granville Island, one of the most popular spots in Vancouver.

Japan (Tokyo)

The neon-lit playground Take in the dazzling sights of Tokyo. It’s a city of contrasts mixing ultramodern with tradition; slick high-tech gadgets and cute cartoon mascots; skyscrapers to temples. It’s continuously reinventing itself and has everything you can ask of a city. For a 360 degree panorama of the city, head to the highest viewing point on the Tokyo Tower. The architecture of this communications and observation tower was obviously influenced by the Eiffel Tower but has become a symbol of the city. Whilst it’s a big city, it’s also home to great nature too with lush green mountains, rivers and gorges and beautiful parks. Admire the beauty of Shinjuku Gyoen National

Garden with its themed gardens and especially striking cherry blossom or hang out in Yoyogi Park and catch up with the latest trends. Tokyo is filled with museums, art galleries and exhibitions and some of the best can be found for free around the streets themselves. To get to them, you will undoubtedly have to cross the famous intersection outside Shibuya Station – a busy junction where the lights turn red at the same time, in every direction, completely stopping traffic for the surge of pedestrians from every which way. The city has more Michelin stars than any other but once in Tokyo, you HAVE to have sushi. Freshly prepared by a sushi master, it is the best in the world! And before you leave, party like the Japanese and take to the mic with a bit of karaoke. Reenergise your spirit in Tokyo with KLM via Amsterdam. You cannot miss: • Visit Meiji Shrine, Shibuya - one of the most popular temples in Japan • Attend a sumo match at Ryogoku Kokugikan, Tokyo’s National Sumo Hall • Admire the beauty of the Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden – it’s one of the best groomed parks you will ever see.

What is Duty of Care and why is it so important? It really is now no longer an option to simply purchase tickets on a whim and despatch employees to a far-away (and not-so-faraway) lands without really considering the potential impact it could have on their health and safety. Risk Management and Duty of Care are more than moral obligations – they are a legal requirement. The Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act 2007 means that corporate bodies now have a legal obligation to ensure they are taking steps to mitigate potential hazards for their travelling employees. Imagine just for a moment that you’re a manager who has recently sent a team of employees to your European HQ offices for a week. What would you do if there was an earthquake? Or an imminent snow storm making its way across the region? How would you contact your employees? Would you know exactly where they’re staying, on which days and the telephone number for the hotel? Would you be able to communicate with every single one of them at quite literally the click of a button? Having to go through individual Outlook calendars searching frantically for booking confirmation emails or the company HR database to find individual mobile numbers is golden time that should be spent establishing contact with your employees and ensuring their safety. These are all important things to be asking

yourself, because if you’re not prepared, you may end up finding yourself in a sticky legal situation. So to protect your employees, at the very least, you must ensure your travellers have received some kind of pre-trip brief from which they are made fully aware of the cultural do’s and don’ts, health and consular requirements for their destination. You absolutely must use reputable service providers and provide safe accommodation. All of this pre-trip risk assessment should be formalised into a travel policy so, in the case of a disaster, you can demonstrate you have followed the correct protocol. Mid-trip risk management is a considerably more difficult proposition for corporations, but thankfully, this is where we at Amity Travel Management, earn our stripes on a regular basis. And, in addition to our current tried and tested Amity Assist systems, we’re investing in an innovative and powerful tool called SMARTtrack that really is at the cutting edge of risk management technology. It’s a global communications platform that allows us to instantly filter and identify travellers within any number of scenarios and send an SMS or email push alert straight to your mobile phone. Using our multi-channel international newsfeeds, we’ll alert you of any potential danger nearby that could impact your health and safety of your employees.

www.southamptonairport.com

We’ll also send your affected travellers an SMS message to check their wellbeing, helping you fulfil your duty of care requirements. We’ll advise details of the potential risk and remind them of our 24/7 emergency number to call should they need alternative travel arranged, or any other form of assistance. Users of our Amity Assist iPhone/Android app already receive live updates of flight delays and cancellations, but with SMARTtrack we can also send timely live updates on in-policy ground transportation options. Every time your organisation makes a booking with us, the itinerary information is synced with our SMARTtrack system and correlated with Riskline’s global threat levels every few minutes. What we see is a global map in which every icon plotted on the landscape represents a traveller. Simply by using the granular filter tool (flight number, hotel supplier, geographical risk level, political unrest, severe weather, health alerts… the list goes on) or by the automated impact analysis via Riskline’s newsfeed, we can export lists of anyone in a certain area who could be affected by a specific event. We’ll have names, contact numbers, dates, itinerary, and any other information that could help us locate your employees within seconds. It’s just one of the many services we provide that help you achieve a seamless travel solution.

If you would like to know more about this, or any other of our services, then please don’t hesitate to get in touch by emailing sarah.vincent@amitytravel.co.uk or call us on 01489 589958.

The Bavarian business capital Located 40miles from the Austrian border and within 1hour 45mins from Southampton Airport with bmi regional or Flybe, the Bavarian capital of Munich is a city of two halves. Not only is it a business hub with seven blue-chip companies basing their headquarters here but it’s also filled with historic architecture, culture and an impressive range of top-class museums, theatres, and the famous Munich Opera House. Munich is also renowned for its top quality food, festivals, events and traditional Christmas markets, it retains a small-town air whilst holding some world-class sights. Munich’s economic strength is founded on the diverse economic structure; the wide range of growing industries located here and the successful composition of global players and small to medium sized business that offer substantial employment opportunities. It has been strong since the start of the 21st century and home to companies within the technology sector, finance, publishing and automotive to name a few. Out of Germany’s seven largest cities, Munich also has the best local public transport, which is one of the reasons why so many companies choose to settle here – either that or it’s because of the beer! It’s not all work and no play – the city has been named as the fourth best in the world for quality of living.

22

Munich’s history

Munich’s food & drink

You don’t have to go far to seek out the royal Bavarian heritage of this metropolis. Although nearly completely destroyed in two world wars, Munich has managed to recreate much of its folkloric, Bavarian past and the Glentleiten Open Air Museum gives a detailed insight into the everyday life of the people of Upper Bavaria, their building culture and their working environment (www.glentleiten.de). For a darker view of the city’s history, the concentration camp at Dachau provides an intense and heartrending reminder of the horrors of the Holocaust. The area to the north of the city where soldiers once paraded and the world's first Zeppelin landed in 1909 found a new role as the home of the 1972 Summer Olympic Games. Olympiapark now draws in people year-round with concerts, festivals and sporting events.

Famous, among other things, for its top notch restaurants and local beers, you’ll find cosy Bavarian restaurants offering regional, time-honoured classics from sauerkraut and bratwurst to international culinary delicacies served in splendid surroundings. Perhaps you could entertain clients in the revolving restaurant of the Olympic tower? From the 190m high observation platform you and your associates can enjoy a fantastic panorama of Munich and a view of the Alps. And of course, you’ll know that Oktoberfest is legendary. So if you are planning on doing business in Munich during the last two weeks of September (Saturday 17th September to Monday 3rd October 2016), you’ll be able to join the annual beer drinking event. Outside of the festival, you can visit one of the city’s numerous traditional beer drinking halls and beer gardens for an authentic Bavarian drinking experience.

Your down-time in Munich If you are travelling to Munich on business, be sure to take some time out of your busy schedule to experience all that the city has to offer…there is so much more to this dynamic business region. Hofbräuhaus - the world’s most famous beer hall Founded in 1589 by Duke Wilhelm V in order to satisfy the thirst for beer of the regent and the ducal court, it has since become the most popular beerhall in Munich. The daily beer consumption here is ca.10,000 Mass (litres). Frauenkirche, Cathedral of Our Dear Lady – encounter the legendary devil’s footprint The late Gothic cathedral was built between 1468-1488 (with the onion-domed spires added in 1525), and is an unmistakable landmark of the city and where, among other things, you can encounter the legendary devil’s footprint in the floor of the church. Nationaltheater, Bavarian State Opera House - one of the world’s leading opera houses. This theatre has certainly been on a historic journey. The first building, commissioned by King Max I (1811-1818), burnt down five years after its completion only to be then rebuilt and destroyed in 1943 during an allied air raid. However www.southamptonairport.com

a reconstruction of the first building was opened in 1963 and makes a major contribution to Munich’s reputation as one of the great international cultural capitals. Shopping – find what you desire Munich certainly doesn’t disappoint with the shopping either. In the well-preserved historical centre you’ll find charming streets, lined with small authentic shops selling typical Bavarian gifts (or Lederhosen) nestled next to international luxury designer boutiques. Hofgarten (Royal Garden) – one for romantics. A tranquil walk around the beautifully manicured garden of Hofgarten is a must. Designed by Elector Maximilian I in 1613 with a ‘Diana Temple’ at it’s centre is popular amongst romantics and lovers of Italian renaissance gardens. Perhaps when you return, you can bring a loved one to share it with? BMW Welt and Museum – driving pleasure. Situated directly adjacent to the BMW corporate headquarters, the BMW Museum is a genuine pilgrimage for lovers of engines, motorcycles and automobiles and features more than 125 of the most important and attractive original exhibits of the BMW brand. Maybe your visit here is combined with the collection of your new BMW?

Isar Gate and Valentin Museum – learn and laugh. Part of the second fortification erected under Emperor Ludwig the Bavarian (1337), it is the only one of three remaining medieval city gates that remain in its entirety. And if your German is good, head to the southern tower to the museum and get a better understanding of the German sense of humour. St. Peter’s Church – offering a great view of the city. Over the course of its time, Munich’s oldest parish church - and known affectionately by the locals at Alter Peter (Old Peter) – has been rebuilt and expanded several times which is evident in the various works of art that can be found inside. It offers the best view of the Munich skyline, that’s after you have climbed the 299 steps to the top!

Staff at the airport who travel the extra mile At Southampton Airport we pride ourselves on helping to make our passenger’s journey as easy as possible. Our Breeze Through Awards recognise and reward those staff who go the extra mile. January 2016: Alexia Escolar Alexia Escolar went out of her way to assist a passenger who had travelled from India via Edinburgh and whose bags had not arrived at Southampton. Alexia used her contacts at Brittany Ferrie’s to arrange for the bags to be transported to Le Harve to ensure that the passenger had her baggage for her 3 week sailing to the Suez Canal. ‘This is exactly the type of customer service we love to see at Southampton Airport’

Has anyone at Southampton Airport gone the extra mile for you?

Think of a typical English garden and what springs to mind? A hidden enclosed sanctuary of wildlife blended with vibrant flowers, trees and shrubs laying aside perfectly manicured green lawns, pebbled paths, impressive water features and even the odd gnome!

W

ell 2016 is the Year of the English Garden, celebrating the 300th anniversary of England's greatest gardener, Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown. The famous British landscape architect changed the face of eighteenth century England designing gardens and landscapes at some of the country’s grandest stately homes including Blenheim Palace, Chatsworth, Highclere Castle, Burghley, Weston Park and Compton Verney, heavily influencing every landscape gardener and landscape architect since! Whether it’s the brand new blooms of spring, summer's riotous colours, the golden falls of autumn or winter's frosty majesty, England's gardens are always spectacular and Hampshire has its own flora and fauna in abundance. Come and visit for a celebration of the country garden and don’t worry, you’ll be forgiven if you sing the words of the popular folk song by Jimmie Rodgers, “In an English Country Garden” as you meander through the colourful gardens that England has to offer.

Being quieter in winter, it’s the perfect time to explore the Anne Frank House, Rijksmusuem and Van Gogh Museum and every year on the 1st Saturday in November “Museum Night” sees around 50 museums in the city open their doors from 19:00 to 02:00 for organised special events, including workshops, concerts, special tours and performances. www.southamptonairport.com

Antwerp One of Belgium’s best kept secrets, Antwerp is a charming historic town famous for diamonds, fashion and art with plenty of sights to see, cafes to relax in, hot chocolates to enjoy and walks to explore. Between the historical sites, the cosy squares and window-shopping, Antwerp is a great city for wandering about on foot. With one of the world’s leading fashion programs at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts it’s no wonder there’s a strong fashion presence in the city, especially so at The MoMu Fashion Museum through adventurous and dynamic exhibits. Home to numerous museums, the best known are the Rubens House, the MAS (Museum aan de Stroom) and the Red Star Line Museum. Once you’ve had your fill of history you can enjoy a relaxing stroll through the cities Botanic Gardens or enjoy one of the fine cafes dotted along the cities cobbled streets.

Did you know? According to ABTA’s Travel Trends Report 2016, almost a quarter of the population will have spent more on their holidays this year than in 2015 (an increase of 20% from last year). Beat the rush, log on to www.southamptonairport.com
