ELEMENTARY SCHOOL FREEDOM AMERICA DRAGON AZTEC STAR WARS HEAVY

(THE FIGHT OF THE CENTURY)

by Sara Mildenstein & Ellie McMullin

HOLY PIGFARTS. We’re all graduating very soon, and we will begin our lives as adults! But do you remember when we were all little kiddies? This beautiful piece is for all of you boys and girls who have strayed from your childhood innocence. Seriously though, let’s all take a journey back to those days long ago. We’ll begin with a story: Once upon a time in the faraway

land of Michigan, little Ellie McMullin and her preschooler lady friends were making a snowman. The girls thought it would be funny to place a phallus on the snowman’s head (don’t ask anyone why they thought of this, or why exactly they knew what a penis was, but...it happened. And arguably, it was pretty funny.) The girls grabbed a chunk of snow and crowned their creation. The snowman was finished, a beautiful specimen of exactly what a snowman should be. All was well in the world of 4 year old giggly girls, when suddenly the boys revolted. A child by the name of Ian was very offended by the girls’ inappropriate design. He walked up and punched the extra appendage off of the snowman’s head while yelling “YOU CAN’T DO THAT!”

As he pushed Ellie down, she swiftly head butted him directly in the abdomen and began wailing on him. After the punches had been thrown, what was left was the painstaking image of the two lying side by side in their puffy snow outfits, tears running down their tiny cheeks, snot cascading down their baby faces. This was preschool: When things were the way they were supposed to be, when everyone did the right thing (except for Ellie and her friends.) As we entered elementary school, not a lot changed. We grew from making snowmen with penises to just making giant balls (of snow.) Really though, we were all pretty innocent. It was a huge deal when someone got asked to the 5th and 6th grade dance, and even

HUGER deal when someone found out that you liked them. The worst day of my (Sara’s) life was when everybody found out that I had a crush on Nate Ryan...(now you know Nate! Whatever, over it...) Where did our bashfulness and humility go?! One of the strangest things for us has been seeing everyone grow up and leave their elementary school selves behind. We’ve all done things some of us never thought we would do. Basically, it has become socially acceptable to put penises on snowmen, and that’s just fine with everybody. Now is that weird, or is it just growing up?? Ponder this while you pack your things for college, and never forget that we all have a little piece of our baby selves somewhere inside our hearts.

LIVIN’ THE AMERICAN DREAM

by Steve Ferentz My family has moved around a lot. We lived here in the 80’s when my two brothers and two sisters were born. Then they moved to Maine for a few years. Then to Cleveland, where I was born. A few years later we moved to Baltimore. In 1999 we wound up back here in Iowa. We’ve been here ever since and I am the only kid in

4 SENIOR SALUTE

my family to go through the same school district K-12. That was the year I started kindergarten at Shimek. Ms. Kalsem’s class. I remember being really nervous and scared as my dad walked me down the halls to the classroom. Naturally, it was the farthest room from the main entrance. I sat next to Peter Krumm in the corner of the room at the white table. We’ve been best friends since that first day of elementary school. We’ve had some good times together over the past 13 years. I remember my favorite teachers from Shimek. Ms. Kalsem would always wait with me after school for my mom to pick me up. There

May 22, 2012 www.thelittlehawk.com

was Mr. Sproule who was awesome and gave me a Jolly Rancher because I knew West Virginia’s mascot was the Mountaineers. There was also Mr. Zoeckler who threw erasers around the room. I remember our principal, Dr. Towers, cherry-bombing kickballs sky-high during recess. I remember my first day at Shimek, but I remember the last day, too. I remember having a school ceremony to watch a tree planting. It was a baby tree, and we named it “Mr. Please-don’tcut-me down.” (The name must have worked because the tree is still there.) Personally, I thought it was really weird but unless it’s

Neature Walk, nature doesn’t float my boat so much. I moved on to Southeast and that was a positive experience. Then came City High. The past four years have been pretty awesome. I love the school. I’ve had two principals and so many great teachers in every subject who have had a positive influence on me. I love the wrestling program and Coach Smith and the rest of the coaching staff. Both my teachers and coaches have made me into a better person. It has been a great four years. But now it’s time to move on to the next chapter in life…and maybe plant another tree.

BROMANCE

by Evgeney Kolyvanov I’ve been lucky enough to have a bestfriend that I met in 1st grade. I’ve also been lucky enough to have been in the same school as him ever since. I’m obviously talking about my main man DJ

Martin. The way we met was pretty funny. It was recess and all the boys in the school were playing football. Someone threw a pass down the field and me and DJ were the only ones close to it. We both went up for it, hit each other, and fell right into a mud puddle. We were completely covered. So we quickly decided that we should probably go to the office and see if they had extra clothes. After we got cleaned off they gave us ridiculous looking pajama pants and some button up hawaiian shirts. We thought we were the two coolest kids in the school that

day. (We actually looked dumb as hell) In the process we became great friends on the spot and the friendship has continued uninterrupted to this day. Unfortunately as high school ends, so do most friendships. Me and DJ always thought we would end up going to the same college and everything, but as we got closer it became less of a reality. He’s going to Dubuque and I’m going to the Air Force. Good enough friends will stay friends, no matter how far apart they live. It’s a great way to test how genuine the friendship has been, and I think

we’ll be alright. So if I had to leave a message with the senior class, It would be this: Don’t forget about your friends, no matter where you go or what you do. We live in a world that’s connected 24/7. It’s easier than ever to stay in touch and not become completely disconnected from the friends you got through high school with. The REAL friends that you have will become apparent pretty quickly after you graduate and start to move out. They’ll be the ones that you’ll miss and care about. They’ll also be the ones that do the same for you.

JUNIOR HIGH

YOU BROKE MY HEART, ERIN HELM!

by Sam Fosse Ahhh junior high, days filled with first kisses, one week relationships, and stubborn arisings. Who

could forget the first time Mr. Muir engulfed you in his coffee breath, or when Brems gave you that ice cold stare, or Mr. Hodges and his ghetto ways? I will remember my experience at South East for the rest of my life, not that I want to. I can remember my first kiss like it was yesterday; because it was yesterday. But all my friends would tell me stories about their first kisses back in junior high. The smell of stale popcorn and AXE body spray fill

the movie theatre, the aftertaste of a red slushy, and the sweaty palms; the whole shabang. Put that together with the erratic tongue down your partner’s throat and you’ve got one special moment. I along with many others fell victim to the “Junior High Relationship.” For instance my first girlfriend stayed with me for a whole three days, then left me for one of my good friends. But hey, it’s not like it emotionally crippled

Hailey Klabo’s

me for years and permanently lost my trust for all women in my life or something. YOU BROKE MY HEART ERIN HELM! Anyway, junior high, we all were put through that awkward phase, some came out hating it and others with good memories. But we can all agree that junior high is a keystone in your youth and without it we wouldn’t be the immature, wasteful, obese Americans we are. #RONDO

HIGH SCHOOL

OUT OF THE SHIRE

by Francesca CrutchfieldStoker As a wise hobbit once said, “And thus it was. A fourth age of middle-earth began. And the fellowship of the ring... though eternally bound by friendship and love... was ended. Thirteen months to the day since Gandalf sent us on our long journey... we found ourselves looking upon a familiar sight. We were home. How do you pick up the threads of an old life? How do you go on... when in your heart you begin to understand... there is no going back? There are some things that time cannot mend... some hurts that go too deep... that have taken hold. Bilbo once told me his part in this tale would end...

that each of us must come and go in the telling. Bilbo’s story was now over. There would be no more journeys for him... save one. My dear Sam. You cannot always be torn in two. You will have to be one and whole for many years. You have so much to enjoy and to be and to do. Your part in the story will go on.” And so it goes, a new step in our lives is beginning. The friendships we have made, the relationships we have begun and ended, all of these will come to a sort of close. We will have to say goodbye, we will have to move on, but we all will know that no goodbye is goodbye forever. It has been 144 weeks, 720 days, or 5040 hours since we began our journey through the hallways of 1900 Morningside Drive. In a year, or maybe ten, some of us will find ourselves back here again. Some of us will be changed for the better, others will have lost their way, but I know for a fact, we will all be able to call a part of this home. How will we leave this place, when we know there is no coming back? How do

we continue on this journey without knowing the twists and turns we may encounter? The truth of this is that no matter where we end up, or how far away we go, none of us will get there without having the experiences we have had, to make us the people we are today. Some memories of this place go too deep; hurt too much, others carry us up to the lightest part of our hearts, and gently drop beams of happiness on each of our smiling faces. Our journey here at City High is over; there are no more stories to be made, but each and every one of us has millions of stories to tell, millions of memories to keep, and all of them are made for the telling. The memories we have made here, over our four years of high school have made us the people we are today, and whether we like it or not, these memories will stick with us, and influence us on our journey for the rest of our days. Some days, there seemed to be no point to high school, some days it didn’t even seem worth it to get out of bed.

My alarm clock playing the latest One Direction hit still didn’t make up for the harshness of the bloody early time I had to get myself up, and out of bed, but nobody can argue that it didn’t make it at least a little less painful. Every memory made, every story told, they all had to happen. Call it fate, or call it high school, but these four years happened for a reason, and the time we spent here at City High was a journey that had to be made, no matter what. So now, as we move on to the next step of our lives, we cannot be torn in two, and be stuck in a phony high school dream forever, we have to allow ourselves to just be ourselves, and move on, step by step. We all have so many years out in front of us, and so many more memories to be made. We have so many things to look forward to doing, and people to meet, and places to go. Our journeys are over here, the time is all spent out, but the things we did, and the times we had, they will stay with us forever, and our part in the story will go on.

SENIOR SALUTE THING

by Quinn McNutt Four years may seem like a long time, but really, it seems just yesterday that we were starting our High School adventure, and now the river of time has carried us away. But the intercourses of our

friendships will last forever (quote by Mr. Leman). In other words, we will always remember the good times with great people. From Mr. Bacon’s pep assemblies to playing gobble gobble in the locker room. I will admit that sometimes school sucked. Of course it did. Waking up on Mondays or getting in trouble for taking your clothes off in an elevator (happens to everybody at least once). But when it comes down to it High School was fun. In my strictly professional opinion I would have to say that the class of 2012 has to be one of the best classes to go through City High

in a long time. We have definitely left our mark on this school, in athletics, academics, the arts, and everywhere in between. We’ve had all state athletes, musicians and students, and for the most part we’ve all gotten along throughout. Also we have had fun doing it all. We’ve joked around with each other and I for one will always remember our days together. Now for you seniors next year, be excited! It’s your last year and you get to be the big dogs on campus. Relax and take things one step at a time. Go and have fun and make the most of the time you have left in

high school. Go do something that you’ve never done before and don’t be afraid to make a fool of yourself. Now I have to give out some shout outs. Big V, we have and we are going to continue to go hard, Nile “D1-AA” Banks, Steve Ferentz, Sam Fosse, Spencer Roach, Jon Myers, Coale Cooper, the conference champs track team, Sailor Gang, Crazy Cranes, Mr. Leman, Rachel Fehr, and of course Natalie Jones. Thank you everybody for making my high school experience a great one.

CITY HIGH

GENERAL INFORMATION AND INSIDER TIPS

Sophie Neems, Student Body President 1. Befriend the janitors. Aside from being lovely people, they can unlock the back door of the school when you pound on it in a panic at 11:00 PM because you have forgotten your Spanish Portfolio and it is due the next morning. 2. Original music videos always get more attention if Mr. Bacon makes a guest appearance. Especially if he does some sort of new fangled dance move.

3. Befriend the secretaries. Aside from providing nice conversation they can answer practically any question that you may have about the inner-workings of City High. (Plus their desks are constantly stocked with Jolly Ranchers and Tootsie Rolls!) 4. If you have lost something in the deep waters of the ocean, or perhaps just the Rec Center pool, go find Mr. Morris. He is a ‘Dive Master’ you know! 5. Ms. Fettweis is the queen of essay writing, speech writing…well really everything to do with writing and flailing herself through the classroom. Go talk to her, she’s great. 6. Make a trip to see Jerry in the copy center now and again. She has power over the ever-pleasing Staple Machine. I know right! Hours of fun and entertainment.

7. If you find your self hankerin’ for a craft made with duct tape or tiedye go find Ms. Redlinger. She has probably already tried it and would be a fount of information. 8. Chat it up with Renee Tonning in the attendance office. This way she will be more likely to permit you to wear pink pants while you ambassador as opposed to the traditional boring black and white uniform. 9. Cross Country is not a cult. It is the chance to eat free freeze pops daily. 10. If you decide you would like to experiment with flying, your best bet would be to go to Doug Lestina. He is very ambitious when it comes to these sorts of things. Even if it means spending thousands of dollars on rigging for Opstad and giving Mr. Peters anxiety dreams. 11. If Ms. Watson asks you to or-

ganize the Interact sand castle for Sand in the City, say yes, gather a group of reliable volunteers and then leave town. 12. Never fear! If you break your ankle midway through Show Choir season, they will let you dance in your boot, as long as you bedazzle it with some festive ribbons. 13. Ever have trouble opening your locker or just feeling a little blue? Chip is there, so always be nice to him. But well… that really goes unsaid. He is Chip for Pete’s sake. I mean he’s practically a super hero. 14. During passing time look up from your phone or away you’re your locker-sized mirror once in a while. There are great things going on at the school that leads and your time to notice them is limited!

on us. Although we do admit there were times when our differences collided. Everyone knows girls are nothing but trouble, unfortunately at that time we weren’t informed of this, and it almost cost us our friendship. Her name was Robin Fields. The way she walked down that hallway was so mesmerizing; it was a mystery why we couldn’t have her. She tried to destroy our relationship with the Whip of Separation, but little did she know we had our own weapon in reserve. The unbreakable bond of true friendship. She could’ve kicked me out of as many classes as she wanted (Victor), but that bond of our friendship could not be wavered, even by

the seas of the Atlantic. Now that our love has conquered all, it’s time to say our goodbyes. Ya’ll mean so much to me brah. Every night when I’m lying in my silk boxers on my Egyptian bed spread, I cry myself to sleep thinking about how I won’t see my friends as much anymore. So now it’s time to give out a few shout outs. First off, Quinn McNutt, you gave the best backrubs, and we thank you for that. Steve Ferentz, we liked how you would let us brush your hair, even when you were mad that day. And lastly, AJ Leman for teaching me how to use soft bite. People’s choice award, Film Fest 2012, Batman, where you at?

THE ATLANTIC

8 SENIOR SALUTE

This quote gave us the drive to get through high school. If we didn’t have any friends, we would only have met people like Quinn McNutt, and we all know that wouldn’t have been cool. At first we were virgins to friendship, but once we penetrated that barrier, we opened our lives up to a whole new world of opportunities. You can make all sorts of friends. They can be short, tall, fat, skinny, ugly, or even a different color than you. It doesn’t matter. All that matters is the connection felt so deeply, so deeply within each other. At times, it felt as though we were inseparable. Indeed, we could seldom be pried apart from the other. Pry bars ain’t got nothin

A TRIBUTE

by Ada Cassell High School: The Best Four Years of YoOops sorry, I just puked in my mouth a little bit. What I meant to say was High School: The Best Four Years of Your Life. But I don’t mean it. I’m lying. I want to sound like an inspirational speaker so that all of the underclassmen don’t go jump off of a bridge before graduation.

Because the truth is, high school most likely will not be the best four years of your life. What about college? What about the first years you’ll spend with your hubby/wifey, or the time you’ll spend with that smelly, wriggling thing called your “newborn child”? Those might be some fun moments. Probably more fun than that time you tripped down the stairs in front of the boy you like. Who knows? Still, high school is full of things like drama and catty girls; detentions and unexcused absences. Things like “hot jocks” that are actually really nice, and nerds that believe it or not, won’t do your homework for you. High school is not some stereotype you can pre-

dict. It is not like the movies, sadly. Because trust me, if Zac Efron and Channing Tatum went to my high school, I’d never leave. Each year though, there are those few that say “No regrets!” and “YOLO!” like it’s some kind of excuse for their actions. Well they need to cut it out. We should regret some of the stuff we did in high school. If you don’t, well, you were either extremely boring from 9th to 12th grade or you just have no sense of shame. Because I’ve read Twitter, Facebook and all of the blogs: I know what you’ve all been up to. I also know that in 30 years I won’t be saying, nostalgically, “Ah, remember when that girl told my entire math class I banged some

junior? GREAT TIMES.” That will not be happening, I’m sure of it. Now wait a second, I bet you’re thinking that this article is a little cynical and inappropriate. But is it worse than last year’s comparison to taking a poop? Maybe it is. However I am not saying that my time at City High has been all bad news bears. I’ve made some amazing memories, amazing friends, amazing bonds, and amazing cinnamon rolls in Foods class. High school was fun, it was a blast, but if these are supposedly the best four years of my life… I have a very disappointing future to look forward to. DON’T LAUGH.

I’LL MISS YOU SO, SO BAD

by Jindalae Suh Your stare was holdin’. With your ripped jeans, your skin was showing. It was a hot night, the wind was blowin’. Where do you think you’re going, baby? The wise and immortal words of Carly Rae Jepsen sum up perfectly my feelings about high school. If City High was a hot boy, no other words would do. Of course City will always have a special place in my heart, a very, very small place. I have to leave room for all my crazy awesome way more super fun and rewarding college experiences. Still, I give credit to my years at City High. I did, I suppose, “ma-

ture” in these hallowed halls, and it has been a long and wild ride filled with pasta Tuesdays, flying Bacons, and inappropriate poop jokes. Senior Salutes are for reflecting on senior’s time at City, or something like that. So what bits of juicy insight have I gleaned from four years at the School that Leads? Well, I’ve certainly discovered myself and found some footing in this footless, crazy world. As a freshman I longed to be that person that everybody knew, but I was just the freak with green hair that was gender ambiguous. Now, after four years of careful nurturing from City High, eye opening experiences, and mind-expanding classes, people still don’t know who I am. This doesn’t faze me, however, because I’m awesome. I have learned I don’t need to be known now because I know that kids who peak in High School will end up working for me, am I right? But really, City High has been pretty good to me. I’m not quite ready for real life, (I never took health) but I feel City has prepared me for the next stages

of my life. And believe me; I am so ready to GTFO. Don’t get me wrong, I will miss City High in my own way. I’ll recall fondly the memories of being asked if I was a lesbian every day of freshman year, losing my 4.0 senior year and my status as a smart person, or the year I discovered sex, drugs and rock n’ roll. Only kidding about that last one Mr. Koleman. But I am proud to be a little hawk. We have a principal who has more energy than a crack head and who cares about City High and its students way more than West High’s principal could ever care about West’s majority Asian population. City High is not Ghetto, City High is not for the poor kids. City High is a great school that provides amazing opportunities for students to grow and succeed. The School that Leads has more than just corn fields beyond its doors, it has ideas waiting to be born, dreams ready to be

realized, and double rainbows. Hey high school, it feels like I just met you. And I know this is crazy but, here’s my number. Call me. It was fun. Maybe we can get together sometime and reminisce. P.S. My name is pronounced Gin-da-lay S-uh. Freaking sound it out, it’s not hard.
