Music possesses a power that transcends words. And, we’re honored to be in the business of sharing music with you. It’s in our joys and sorrows. Our fondest memories and our greatest fears (we’re looking at you, Jaws). Music connects us. And, while music can’t bring us together in the same room right now, it’s still connecting us each day. Stay tuned… We still have a lot to say.

The Wonder of Travel ver a year into the COVID-19 pandemic and most of us are excited to vacation, explore, and make up for all that we missed in the summer of 2020. With more and more people getting vaccinated, the travel industry continues to navigate a new normal, looking to welcome guests with arms wide open. Luckily, we live in the state where everyone vacations, and, although the beaches weren’t fully off limits the past year, the experience was certainly different. After a year of being told to stay home and avoid contact with anyone outside of our homes, the simple pleasures we once took for granted now mean so much more. We are not only thinking of vacation and exploration, but we are reflecting on what it actually means to disconnect in order to reconnect. As we brought together the stories in this issue, we began to realize that in order to be fully present, one must disconnect from everything outside of the experience in front of them. Only then, can our minds take advantage of the wonders that are in front of us. In this issue, we highlight some of Lakeland’s best attractions and staycations. From kids’ summer

We are reflecting on what it actually means to disconnect in order to reconnect. camps, to a gear guide for your roadtrip adventures, to a world-renowned golf resort only 45 minutes from Lakeland, we certainly filled this issue with everything you need for a fun, adventurous, and relaxing summer. In addition, we’ve broken our mold to venture outside of our county lines, into the coast, featuring places where Lakelanders like to vacation, including Boca Grande, Anna Maria Island, and Longboat Key. We hope these stories inspire you to go on your very own great Florida road trip.

Your high-action, outdoor photography has become a staple in The Lakelander over the years. What draws you to this type of work? I love everything about this type of photography. I enjoy researching my subject or location, thinking through the technicalities; and then the unpredictable elements that nature can throw at you always add to the excitement. The fast pace and need for quick decision-making are a lot of fun as well. What are your favorite outdoor activities? Surfing is at the top of my list, even though I don't get over to the coast as often as I would like. I also love fishing and hiking with my wife and kids.

28

Your work has taken you far beyond Lakeland’s city limits. Tell us about a shoot you enjoyed traveling for. My church, Access Church, supports a missionary who works exclusively with the Maasai in Kenya, planting and building churches and training pastors. I have traveled to Kenya with a few others from Access twice and documented both trips. Both times were completely unique experiences. The Maasai are the most genuinely kind people you would ever want to meet, and their way of life is so beautiful. The remoteness and vastness of the landscape is also incredible.

M E T R O NEW AND NOTABLE IN LAKELAND

32

TH E L A K E L A N D E R

During the COVID-19 pandemic when travel came to a halt, my husband and I quickly realized that our annual trip abroad was not an option. I started to think of summer as an opportunity to explore my own back yard. We ventured to safe outdoor spaces across the state and even across the nation. Last year was the year that mid-century travel styles had a revival. Driving over flying was the travel method of choice in 2020. Traveling is specifically cultural to American history, from the 1840s’ search for gold and adventure in the wagon trains to 1956 when the Eisenhower administration authorized the development of the interstate highway system. That system added 41,0000 miles of new roads to the American landscape, and travel across the nation became accessible to all. Then, in 1965, the economic boom took place, cars became more affordable, vacations and traveling for leisure became more common, and thus “The Great American Road Trip” was born.

The American way of life urges us to believe that time is money and money is time, and as air travel became more affordable over the past few decades, it promised to get us places faster. The rise of affordable airlines, technology, and hundreds of hacks to find cheap flights made air travel popular. Then, in 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic brought the travel industry to a standstill. Road trips and national parks were quickly deemed the safest way to travel and explore, giving us a reason to rediscover the old tradition of road tripping. There’s beauty found in revival, and in this case, a new generation of road trippers did what we had only seen in movies and television. We packed our cars and traveled miles to enjoy the greatness of the American landscape and the love of the open road as did those from generations past. If surviving a global pandemic taught us one thing, it is to be mindful of old traditions and the art of slowing down. Faster isn’t better, and often we miss out on a lot of beauty in exchange for speed.

Love is in the Air at LoveBird you’ve driven down South Florida Avenue lately, you’ve likely noticed the brand-new LoveBird “Almost Famous Chicken” along Beacon Road. This Nashville-inspired hot chicken restaurant is finally open — if you haven’t made it over yet, here’s what to know before you go. Due to its small location in an old gas station, LoveBird mostly services drive-thru and online orders. Its exterior decor features a custom mural by local artist Elizabeth Chinchilla, neon-lit lettering and hot pink signage. Everything’s made in-house at LoveBird.

IF

The menu serves up chicken with varied levels of spiciness ranging from regular fried chicken to “crazy heat.” The mouth-watering menu also features unique southern sides like tangy slaw and cheesy potatoes, and desserts like fire-roasted apple cobbler and banana pudding. LoveBird is one of many local businesses shifting to accommodate a post-pandemic mindset, which will likely result in many people opting against in-restaurant dining. That said, it’s a welcomed addition to Lakeland’s fast-casual dining repertoire with affordable, quick, and delicious eats.

BRIGHT STARRY NIGHT Stargazers, did you catch the Pink Supermoon on April 26? If not, don’t fear: it was only the first of three supermoons this summer. Be on the lookout on May 26 and June 24 to see the moon bigger, brighter, and closer in the night sky.

tandard air travel, while efficient, is rarely convenient. In a tourist hub like Florida, it’s common — and even expected — to experience frustrating wait times, cancellations, and weather delays. From postponed flights to time-consuming security checks, many business professionals seek a quicker and more personalized travel experience. Tryp Air Charter is a travel program that services business travelers’ needs right away. Whether you’re taking a solo day trip for work or booking a weekend holiday with family or friends, pricing is competitive and varies with each flight.

S

TH E L A K E L A N D E R

Tryp utilizes the Pilatus PC-12 aircraft, the “gold standard” for singleengine turboprops. It offers a smooth and fast ride, stylish design, and ensures a safe arrival on-time. Not to mention a comfortable and spacious cabin interior and SMS connectivity, so travelers can stay in touch with family and friends during the flight. A Tryp flight departs on your schedule. You may opt to land at over 5,500 local and regional airports across the Southeast, mid-Atlantic, as well as the islands in the Bahamas. Flight times are competitive; for example, guests can travel from Central Florida to Charleston, South Carolina, in just 1 hour, 25 minutes. Flights are easy to book, too. Just like a commercial airline, you can book online or by phone up to a day in advance, depending on aircraft availability. Conveniently for us, Tryp flies out of a private terminal right here in Polk County. With Tryp, Lakeland residents no longer need to brave the I-4 traffic toward Tampa or Orlando to hail a flight; we can head to the Lakeland Linder Airport instead. Chartered air travel is a growing industry and an increasingly affordable option for both business and recreational excursions. As we continue to seek socially distanced alternatives to our regular routines, private air travel is a safe option to get us where we need, when we need. flytryp.com

OLD FLORIDA, MADE NEW Florida tourism isn’t all beaches and theme parks. It’s fresh citrus, natural wildlife, and cattle ranches, too. The rich history Central Florida offers often goes unknown. Westgate River Ranch Resort & Rodeo welcomes guests into a glimpse of this untold story. Written by Jenna MacFarlane Photography Courtesy of Westgate River Ranch

RIVER RANCH

GREATER LAKELAND

Did you know that old Central Florida was home to the United States’ first cowboys? Back when the famous Chain of Lakes served as a trade route for steam-powered paddle boats, cowboys paved a cattle-driving route. This route winds straight through our home, Polk County, and its history is preserved by one ranch just outside Lake Wales. At Westgate River Ranch Resort & Rodeo, visitors experience true old Florida frozen in time. Right outside campers’ rooms, cattle roam, horses neigh, and cows graze. Just an hour south of Orlando, Westgate lies on 1,700 sprawling acres on the cusp of the Kissimmee River. The ranch is surrounded by 400,000 acres of government-protected wetlands; so, if you’re an annual

Westgate camper, you can rest assured the land will always remain a quiet and undeveloped space to disconnect. While the pandemic took a toll on many tourist destinations here in Florida, Westgate thrived. Since reopening last summer, it’s been breaking personal records weekly. When the ranch’s General Manager, Ray Duncan, took me on a tour of the resort, he explained just why visitors can’t stay away. The vibrant and ongoing success of Westgate can be attributed to a careful balance it holds between its adaptability to change and its commitment to honor historical traditions. The business’ approach to innovation is simple: keep doing what works, and adapt what doesn’t. Westgate holds true to its mission: to

provide a space for individuals, couples and families to connect with one another and nature in a day, a weekend, or longer stay. The accommodations at Westgate range greatly, from luxury glamping suites to simply plots of land for guests to pitch their own tents. It is a perfect place for families that desire to camp but don’t want to invest in outdoor gear. Guests experience ranch life without “roughing it.” Westgate is community-minded. After every Saturday night rodeo, visitors can grab a drink at the oldstyle saloon and go line dancing at the communal street party. Guests that stay in glamping suites, luxe teepees, or regular campsites enjoy communal fire pits. “We have families that have met at the fire pit and become lifelong friends,” says Duncan. “They come from all over the U.S. and reconnect here every year.” Most units at Westgate don’t have TVs; the ranch is focused on family bonding. In the luxury suites, staff place complimentary coffee and danishes on the porch each morning. Hammocks

are scattered under canopy trees for those staying to relax, read a book, and reconnect with nature. At night, guests take their golf carts to drive-in movie nights under the stars. It is an unhurried and relaxing environment designed for families to retreat. One of the most coveted experiences at the ranch is the 45-minute-long horseback ride where kids and adults alike enjoy a leisurely ride along an undeveloped trail. Experienced guides ride alongside each group as they pass by ponds of sparkling water and fields of buffalo. After the ride, guests are welcomed by an exotic petting zoo with calves, peacocks, emus, and more. The experiences provided at Westgate shape children’s lives. “It’s neat to see kids come to Westgate and ride a horse for the first time, or go to the rodeo, and come back years later as trained horseback riders,” says Duncan. “Their parents tell me, ‘You got them hooked.’” According to Duncan, one little girl rode her first horse at Westgate and went on to compete in the Olympic qualifiers. Duncan deeply values the ability to shape the experience of Westgate visitors and intentionally trains his staff to do the same. “I always tell my team, never take it for granted. You hold their experience in your hands. Guests come in the front gate like visitors, and when my team does their job, they leave feeling like family.”

After the challenging year and long quarantine we’ve all experienced, people want to get out and explore. We’re no longer taking our outdoor surroundings for granted. We’re getting out, breathing the fresh air, and appreciating the world around us with a hopeful mindset. Large-scale theme parks nearby like Disney World and Universal Studios offer a sense of adventure, but many guests are looking elsewhere for distanced fun. The nature of what people want out of their vacations is changing: in 2020, even amidst travel restrictions, RV and camping material purchases soared. People are wary of crowded resorts, but they still want to travel, thus making a place like Westgate the perfect middleground vacation destination. If you’re interested in checking out the resort, head over on a Saturday night

to the 1,200-seat rodeo to watch some barrel racing and bull riding. Each rodeo is announced by Duncan himself and is a treat for both guests staying at the resort or just visiting for the evening. Get your tickets early, though, because the limited capacity means the stadium fills up quickly. Westgate looks forward to offering more event space, dining options, and accommodations for guests. The resort has seen major growth even during the pandemic, and there is no doubt it will continue to expand as vacationers look for more natural and historic opportunities to experience Florida. As we seek open-air experiences, let’s look first toward the natural beauty that Central Florida has to offer in our very own back yards. Wildlife thrives in the sunshine, blue skies, and wide-open spaces; most often, we do, too.

ituated just 45 minutes south of Lakeland, Streamsong Resort is an escape to the countryside, with nothing in sight but a beautiful, architectural masterpiece nestled in the Bone Valley of Florida. The resort offers visitors a luxurious experience, from first-class accommodations, indoor and outdoor activities, to worldclass golf. Among the sand piles turned into dramatic, dunelike formations, Streamsong’s 16,000 secluded acres sit on land that has deep roots in Florida history. Phosphate is a main ingredient used in fertilizer, and Florida contains the most known deposits of phosphate in the United States. The Mosaic Company, a leading global producer of crop nutrients, mined the property on which Streamsong exists today. Streamsong Resort is now a successful example of a mining-reclamation project that transformed a scarred landscape into a natural oasis. “Mosaic didn’t just want to create your typical reclamation project; they wanted to create something that gives back to the community,” explains Craig Falanga, Streamsong’s Director of Sales & Marketing.

“Streamsong is a celebration of reclamation, of both land and spirit. Since the mining has stopped, nature has taken over and provided us with the perfect inspiration.” This remote hideaway was designed by Alfonso Architects and features a contemporary design that employs classic modernist principles. Streamsong Resort is decorated in soft earth tones with wood, natural light, and natural materials set on beautifully kept lands in an organic and wild approach with long grasses, and roads winding between them. Architect, Alberto E. Alfonso, designed the structure to carry the theme

of a tree into the night sky. Concrete columns at the base of the building embody the “roots” of the tree and its branches. Vertically, “leaves” rise up through the lobby and the floors, embracing the use of concrete, steel, and wood building materials. Although world-renowned for its golf courses, Streamsong offers a variety of amenities and experiences perfectly crafted and suited to meet your secluded resort dreams. Driving up to Streamsong Resort immediately evokes a sense of peace and detachment from the rest of the world. Exceptionally trained and prepared staff are ready to greet you and meet any needs you may have. On hot Florida

days, expect to be offered an ice-cold bottle of water by the valet staff. It’s the details that create a luxurious experience, and Streamsong is certainly aware of this. Upon arrival you will enter through the second level of the building, the main entrance to the lodge representing the trunk of the “tree” and taking you directly to the “leaf ”shaped lobby. Structured from wood, the lobby overlooks the pond and is situated perfectly to feel as if the leaf (lobby) is floating on the pond. In need of a personalized wellness experience? oversized columns that resemble the petrified roots of a tree running down into the spa pools, creating a private, intimate experience. “It’s as if the roots are in the water, pulling the water out, into the tree,” says Falanga. As we venture our way through the breezeway and into the pool, we find ourselves enjoying a panoramic view of the lakeside infinity pool, complete with a poolside bar and restaurant, in addition to complimentary cabanas. While on the topic of food and drink, Streamsong offers five dining experiences to choose from.

Nestled into the Lodge’s lower lobby, SottoTerra the resort’s Italian restaurant, offers an intimate fine-dining experience following the same design as AcquaPietra, featuring concrete columns that function as dividers, evoking a sense of privacy, texture, and discovery. The rooms continue the arboreal theme and, instead of curtains for the expansive windows, the native-Cuban designer cleverly

experience three of the most highly acclaimed widely pursued golf courses designed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, Tom Doak, and Gil Hanse in the same location. The Streamsong Red course is Coore/Crenshaw artistry at its finest, designed to play along the ground because of its firm, fast fairways. It has specific landing areas, a mix of short and long holes, and a Biarritz par-3 that sits next to Doak’s equally bold

203-yard seventh on the Streamsong Blue course. Much of Streamsong Blue shares land with Streamsong Red. Both courses stand alone as masterpieces, one not overshadowed by the other. Doak uses more elevation changes on the 7,276-yard at Streamsong Blue design, beginning with the first tee which sits 40 yards above the fairway. At Streamsong Black, Gil Hanse challenges golfers with a layout that can be stretched to 7,800 yards. It sits apart from the Streamsong Red and Streamsong Blue courses and has its own clubhouse and 18-hole putting course. It is a two-acre putting course and practice area, and

it does not have the same changes in elevation as its sister courses. Beyond the fairways, guests can enjoy guided bass fishing adventures, sporting clays, archery challenges, and so much more. THE LAKELANDER COAST D I S C OV E R I N G

Summer’s calling, and we’re answering. While Lakeland may not have a shoreline to call its own, we’ve got the next best thing: the Florida Gulf. Together, we believe that these beautiful beaches, island-style restaurants, and resort destinations make up the Lakelander Coast.

66

TH E L A K E L A N D E R

Florida’s Gulf Coast is famous for its perfect shore with spectacular, white sandy beaches and calm, blue-green waters. With resident numbers doubling during the winter, Floridians know that our beaches and the sunny weather are gold, and it’s no secret that Florida residents, including Lakelanders, enjoy venturing out to disconnect and enjoy beach life. After all, that’s what Florida summers are all about. From a secluded island to the classic funky beach town, we’ve pinned down the Lakelander Coast. These beaches are the ones that many Lakelanders call home away from home. You may prefer the beach view from your resort pool instead of diving into the ocean — either way, island life does something to all of us, something good, and most of us look forward to this feeling every summer. We hope this guide inspires you to venture out to the coast and/or discover new activities during your sun-filled days by the beach. Pack your sunscreen (Rafa Natural has a great one) and choose your island; summer is waiting.

B O CA G R A N D E Located on Gasparilla Island, Boca Grande is slow, quiet, and overall just ideal. Pristine white sand beaches stretch the entire Gulf side of the Island. Tourism and fishing are the economic base on this serene, seven-mile-long island. This tropical paradise is a way of life that combines uncluttered beaches, fishing, wildlife, and a lush tropical landscape.

I SS U E 6 4

In the late 1880s, the town was a deep-water port for ships that transported phosphate all over the world. With a year-round population of roughly 1,700 people, this charming island boasts plenty of history and Old Florida culture. Here, there are no traffic lights and few cars. In a town this size, all you need is a golf cart to get around.

If you enjoy Scarpa’s Italian in Lakeland, you will also love Scarpa’s Coastal in Boca Grande. Owned by Lakelanders Ashley and Glenn Scarpa, Scarpa’s Coastal features housemade pasta and “fresh Florida seafood with an Italian flair,” complete with a full liquor bar and an extensive Napa Valley and imported Italian wine selection.

While on the topic of food and drink, The Hummer is one of Boca Grande’s signature cocktails found at The Pink Elephant. Lunch, dinner, or dessert, this cocktail is refreshing and perfectly balanced to enjoy any time of day. For a history lesson on the island and perhaps some old tales, Boca Grande ‘s historic 125-plus-year-old lighthouse and museum are worth the visit. The whole island is beautifully kept with scenic views of Gulf Coast beaches, but a walk or golf cart drive down Banyan Street is a must. These trees were planted over 100 years ago by the railroad executives and homeowners that line the street. As the screen door slaps shut behind you, nightlife begins. Bar hop through the town, and don’t miss having a drink at The Temptation Bar for a little nostalgia. Rumor is the bar opened its doors in 1947. Enjoy the laid-back, beach-town feel and quirky decor with signs that read “Please, no profanity” and “Plan ahead, buy two cases.”

In 1926 Conrad Schuck was told by his doctors he had but a few months left to live. Defying his doctor’s grim prognosis, Conrad got to work on one of the most ambitious human endeavors to build a massive dream house for him and his family. People started coming from all over to see the concrete monstrosity giving Conrad the idea to open the house up to the public to help fund construction. It would continue being a proud Florida tourist attraction all the way up until the 1960’s but eventually fell into a state of disrepair. In 2015 Drew Davis and Krislin Kreis saw past the neglect and ruin and still saw the gem of the Wonder House’s former glory. In the spirit of Conrad’s original tours, you can once again see the incredible and sometimes head scratching inventions filling every room throughout the 25 plus room mansion. It’s one thing to see animals sectored off in camps and cages; it is wholly another to see them up close in their natural habitat, where they have room to roam. Visitors can join an ATV safari, kayak to an island of lemurs, ride on a camel expedition, and more — right here in Polk County. Safari Wilderness is home to over 600 animals both exotic and domestic and offers a unique approach to wildlife experience. Each animal at Safari Wilderness has a personality, and staff members know them by name.

Guides keep close watch on the animals’ well-being and provide the best possible environment for their needs. Because of Safari Wilderness’ commitment to providing a safe and uninterrupted space for animals to thrive, the ranch keeps a tight cap on the number of visitors per day. Bordered by rich cypress domes, lush bay trees, and the 870-square-mile Green Swamp, the areas directly surrounding Safari Wilderness supply four of Florida’s major rivers. The

Green Swamp is a vital area to Florida’s water supply; it acts as a reservoir to source Central and South Florida’s aquifer, the primary source of drinking water for most Floridians. Far from the hustle and bustle of corporate and city life, Safari Wilderness reminds visitors to look up from their work and their phones to deepen their understanding of the nature that fills our beautiful state. Its environmental significance ensures that the land will never be developed, offering an expansive and natural space for animals. Only one house per 10 acres can

be built in the area. It is a quiet, relaxing place to decompress. The president and CEO of Safari Wilderness, Lex Salisbury, has dedicated his life to animal and nature conservation. Born and raised in Alaska, Salisbury spent seven years in Australia while pursuing education; he earned his bachelor’s degree in social anthropology along with his master’s degree in Australian Environmental Sciences at Griffith University. Salisbury has been to Africa 30 times and is a highly experienced safari guide. His deep level of understanding is evident when

Located in Dade City, visitors can see even more diverse animals like rhinos, zebras and cheetahs. The team at Safari Wilderness looks forward to furthering the ranch’s ability to provide for Polk County. Their most recent addition, the car tour, was implemented in response to COVID-19 last year to allow social distancing. In a car tour, up to seven people can ride through the ranch in their own vehicle, guided and educated about the landscape through their radio. This is an innovative way to encourage holistic education about nature while remaining both safe and affordable for larger groups and families. Ecotourism is the fastestgrowing form of tourism here

in Florida and serves as the primary way people build a true relationship with nature. It is designed to connect people with nature in noninvasive ways, and exists to educate and encourage support for wildlife. This is why Safari Wilderness cannot be classified as a zoo or a theme park; it is, instead, a hands-on working farm and wildlife preserve. It is licensed by the USDA and operates as an ecotourism venture by supporting the mutual flourishing of the economy and the environment in our area. It is more important than ever to steward our resources and protect our wildlife. People are

I SS U E 63

moving away from quantitative commercial attractions and toward qualitative ecotourism experiences. Safari Wilderness encourages that process by offering an opportunity to educate both ourselves and our children. As we learn about the world around us, may we put our best foot forward in maintaining the well-being of the nature we are so blessed to call “home.”

PHILANTHROPY

A LIFE-CHANGING TRADITION Written by Charmaine Patterson Photography by Nate Chappell

Leadership, teamwork, and problem solving are just a few of the invaluable skills that summer camps teach our youth. At Camp Fire Sunshine Central Florida, kids discover their “spark” and make powerful memories along the way.

nnual camping trips create some of the fondest memories of our childhood. From making s’mores and swimming in a lake to singing around the campfire and pitching a tent, this leisure pastime isn’t just one to enjoy; it also builds skills that can last a lifetime. Camp Fire Sunshine’s “Service Learning Road Trip Program” takes things up a notch as it keeps the tradition going every year for local youth. With three trips per year (an Alternative Spring Break, Nature Quest, and CF66 ServiceLearning Road Trip), Camp Fire is covering all bases for teens to discover and embrace the great outdoors, their own personalities, and growing passions. Alternative Spring Break (ASB) caters to sixth to 12th graders and is held Monday through Friday, aligning with spring break for Polk County Schools. Participants stay in one location for the trip, which, in the

92

past, has taken part in Florida or nearby states like Georgia or Alabama. While there, 10 teens and three staffers complete a service project for a different non-profit or municipality daily. Sixth to 12th graders can also take advantage of Nature Quest, a four-day trip held at a state park or nature center each June. These participants (also 10 teens and three staff members) roll up their sleeves to complete a service project like trail maintenance, beach cleanup, or exotic invasive plant removal. Held every July, the CF66 Service-Learning Road Trip is strictly for high schoolers who enjoy a week of service projects, team-building activities, and self-reflection. They stay at various locations every night (some nights in a tent, others in a cabin or floor of a recreational center), and even cook most of their own meals, with a fast-food treat allowed every once in a while.

Executive Director Lynn Anne Castleberry shared with The Lakelander the heart of the programs. “All three programs are the brainchild of our previous Executive Director Holly Lane.” Sadly, Lane passed away in March 2019. “Holly’s passion for teens, nature, and relationship building shines through these programs,” says Castleberry. “Prior to becoming director she was the teen program coordinator for many years. The majority of the programming we do to this day all leads back to Holly.” While there are a variety of programs, Castleberry says each one leaves teens with valuable and long-lasting experiences. “Our teen programs teach lifelong skills: leadership, teamwork, problem-solving. The teens also learn about each of the communities that they travel to, as well as the needs and mission of the non-profit they are working with. Teens also earn service hours during each of the service projects — often required for high school graduation and scholarships.” She adds, “Every day starts with an ice breaker/team building, and ends with a reflection period and a celebration of their accomplishments. The reflection period allows the teens to discuss what they learned that day, what they enjoyed, what they didn’t, and how they overcame any hurdles.” The programs are considered a haven and oasis for local youth, who take advantage of the much-needed time away from technology. “We believe in the power of nature to awaken the senses

and the desire to learn,” says Castleberry. “Our camp and outdoor programs allow teens to unplug from technology for a full week and explore, grow, challenge themselves, make new friends, get out of their comfort zone, gain confidence, and make powerful memories that will have an impact on their lives. All cell phones are gathered at the very beginning of the trip. Teens are allowed a call home mid-week. Phones are recollected and returned at the end of the trip.” Interestingly enough, participants have learned to live without their cell phones just fine by the close of the week. “Very much to the surprise of each teen, they survive the entire week without electronics of any kind.”

Campers are able to volunteer at unique locations on their trips like at the Loggerhead Marinelife Center or a food kitchen for people experiencing homelessness.

The program aims to help participants find their true passion, which ideally leads to them discovering their life’s work. “Camp Fire helps youth dig deep inside and discover their ‘sparks,’ their personally defined nuggets of potential. Helping a young person become who they want to be takes time and encouragement. It takes paying attention to what sparks a passion. At Camp Fire, that’s what we do. We listen, we encourage,

and we provide the opportunity to uncover each young person’s unique interests. We help youth become the exceptional people they are destined to be, buoyant with potential to do anything they dream of doing. “Our promise is that young people want to shape the world. Camp Fire provides the opportunity to find their spark, lift their voice, and discover who they are. In Camp Fire, it begins now. Light the fire within.”

Fortunately, the fallout from all things COVID-19 has not resulted in a dire impact on the programs. Castleberry points out that the ASB will focus on projects in the Greater Lakeland area this year, while Nature Quest and CF66 will continue as they have in previous years. This wasn’t the case last year, in the earlier days of the coronavirus pandemic as ASB, which was slated for a Central Alabama location, was canceled.

The other two programs saw major changes as well. Camp Fire prides itself on its inclusion statement, which notes that it “believes in the dignity and the intrinsic worth of every human being.” It does not discriminate but instead supports youth of any abilities and disabilities, races, and ethnicities, no matter their social-economic background, sexual orientation, gender identity, or expression.

many ways, today’s great American road trip would be starkly different than that of the author’s premillennial adventure from Florida to Alaska, when a paper map guided the way and a dollar’s worth of gas brought the destination 20 miles closer. No cell phone or GPS. A 20-pound CD carrying case. A prepaid card and a seedy convenience store’s pay phone to let everyone back home know you were OK. But even if some of the gear has changed, today’s intrepid road warriors’ reasons for the trip would be the same as they ever were — to see the beauty of this land, to drive for its own sake, to meet great people you’d never encounter otherwise, and be inspired by the freedom to go, at least for a short time, in whatever direction they chose. Here’s the gear you’ll want to consider the next time you want to get lost.

BUG SPRAY DEET might make you sneeze a few times, but you know what’s better than being attacked by mankind’s deadliest disease vector? Sneezing.
