Figure 2: Google Search trends for “BI” between 2004-2011. BI (or “bi”) has everyday meanings in other languages. There has been a relative constant news coverage for the term “Performance Appraisal”. However, in 2004, the keyword “Performance Appraisal” had the highest search volume compared to all consecutive years. One reason could be that “Performance Appraisal” is used by individuals nowadays, but may have not been as clearly defined and thus used more broadly in the past. There is not enough data to build a single, strong argument for this pattern. Instead, it seems to be the case of a composite trend, made out of increased accuracy of definitions. Also, there is a shift from the usage of the term “performance” at the personal level.
