Happy New Year

PEOPLE OF PRAYER 2010 - Can you believe it? It didn’t seem that long ago that everyone was running to hide in the hills because Y2K was upon us. Remember? All of the Internet was going to shut down and the world was going to shut down with it! Well, we made it through the decade and here we are already moving quickly into the next. God likes new beginnings. Back in the 70’s, one of the very first scriptures I memorized upon rededicating my life to Christ was 2nd Corinthians 5:17. It says, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” Isn’t it nice to have new beginnings? The wonderful thing about living with the Lord is that we don’t have to wait a whole year to get renewed. Once we become a new creation in Him, we can experience something fresh each and every day. Lamentations 3:22-23 says, “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” With the new year in front of us and our dreams and goals in sight, let’s remember that the only way that we can reach those dreams is by living one day at a time by the love and mercy of God. Have a blessed and happy New Year! RICK THORP, Publisher

“If you abide in Me and My Word abides in you, you will ask what you desire, and it will be done for you.” - Jesus

God is awesome and He is faithful! This story correlates to a Faith class that I was taking in 1996 at our church. The teacher mentioned that we would be ‘tested’; not only by paper, but by God Angie Thompson Himself. I wasn’t sure exactly what she meant until “it” happened. This is my Healing Testimony. About a week after the announcement from our teacher, I was in the kitchen preparing breakfast for my four children and I called all of them to get up and come to breakfast. However, my eight-year old, Preston didn’t show up, so I called him again, but he still didn’t come. I went to the bedroom to see what the problem was and found him still in the bed. He told me he was so tired that he couldn’t get up. I could tell that something was wrong because he moved with such weakness, so I helped him out of the bed and got him dressed. I called our Paediatricians office to see if they could see him immediately. After we arrived at the doctor’s office, Preston was examined thoroughly. During the examination I noticed that the doctor kept listening to Preston’s heart. Finally, the

5

doctor requested that Preston have an ultrasound done on his chest and he sent us to a nearby hospital. After the ultrasound, we took the results back to the doctor, and when he had finished reviewing the x-rays, he gave Preston and I some devastating news. The doctor informed us that a part of Preston’s heart was hardening and that it would eventually become completely hardened -meaning terminal. This meant that there was nothing we could do to prevent it. However, the doctor did say that we could slow the process down by making sure Preston was completely inactive. I guess he didn’t know Preston very well. You see, Preston was the most active child I had. He loved all sports: football, track, baseball, basketball, hunting, fishing -everything! And when he did those things, he excelled with great tenacity. Asking me to make sure that he was inactive was like asking a well fertilized garden not to grow! Impossible! Preston began to cry. He asked the doctor if he could at least go fishing and he was given an “OK, as long as he didn’t try to swim in the water to catch them.” We laughed, but the doctor didn’t. He knew that he had just issued a death sentence on Preston’s young life. We were sent to the Cardiology clinic at Mary Bridge Children’s hospital for more examinations and to have a monitor placed on Preston’s heart to chart and pace the hardening of the heart muscle. After two weeks of being monitored, Preston and I returned to the clinic and had the monitor removed for a

JANUARY | revival anyone? (pt. 3)

RESPONSIBILITY Last month we discovered how important it is for a Christian to pray.

Jesus drove the money changers out of the temple while making it known to them that God’s House was called a “House of Prayer.” We also used an analogy of a river. There are various rocks in the river that make up our Christian walk, such as Bible study, going to church, and being a witness. We described that prayer was not one of the “rocks in the river” of our Christian life, but prayer actually IS the river. In other words, prayer should not be something that is a part of a Christian; it is something that defines the Christian. It is at the core of a Christian lifestyle. Not only is prayer a command, it is something that reflects how committed we really are to our relationship with God. Of course, praying just for “show” is a ridiculous exercise. The Bible explicitly says in Matthew 6:5, “When you pray, you are not to be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on the street corners so that they may be seen by men. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full.” If you want a reward of recognition, then pray on a street corner to make yourself feel better. But if you want a true reward, connect with God and experience a real relationship with Him and have your prayers count for His Kingdom. (continued on page 9)

JANUARY | revival anyone? (pt. 3) our time. Keep in mind that when referring to “dominating the earth”, “taking authority of our cities”, “possessing the land” etc. -this all has to do with the spiritual realm.

In terms of praying for something specific, like revival, we must understand more clearly what it is we are praying for. The five primary characteristics of what the early church experienced after the Day of Pentecost when the Holy Spirit was sent to the earth was: 1. Continual salvation of souls 2. Baptism of the Holy Spirit 3. Physical healing 4. Casting out of demons 5. Signs and wonders So, if we are praying for revival, we should have the expectation to see the five manifestations above. By praying for revival, we are looking for a “reviving” of something that once was; a manifestation and outpouring of the Holy Spirit that compares to the early days of the church. How bad do we want to see these things take place today? An important statement made last month is this:

“Your desire for revival will determine your commitment to prayer.” If we are not dedicated to seeing the things of God manifest in our communities, then we won’t take on the responsibility to pray for them. This month, we will lay out our responsibility relating to God’s agenda on the earth for 9

Prayer Matters Magazine 3 January 2010

With the privilege of being chosen by God, there comes a responsibility to be obedient to Him and to take authority over the areas that He has placed us in. We are to spiritually dominate the cities and regions where we live. This takes effort and determination. Because of this domination, people will get saved, healed and restored. This is the work of the Lord and is desperately needed in the land. There are some followers of Christ whose territory is not limited to a local area, rather, some people, ministries and organizations have a global mantle and calling. But for the purpose of this series of articles, we are primarily referring to cities, counties and regions around where we live. These are the places where many of us raise, or have raised our children; places where we work, go to school, own businesses etc. It’s important to “possess” the land that we live in and not allow the enemy to steal and corrupt our own backyards. When someone grows a garden, they do all kinds of things to protect animals and critters from coming in and ruining it. You have gophers and slugs coming from the ground; birds and bugs from the air; deer, skunks, raccoons, and all kinds of animals coming from somewhere to eat something that belongs to you and your family. People put up fences, gates, electric zappers, scarecrows, and nets; they use repellents, sound waves, noise makers and a whole host of other tricks to protect their garden. That’s the attitude that we should have about spiritual things -do whatever it takes to protect what God has given to us! In Part 1, I touched on the fact that Christians are given spiritual dominion over the earth. We are supposed to govern the areas where we live and put forth effort in maintaining spiritual dominance in the locale that God has planted us in. Chaos and craziness came in when Adam,

JANUARY | revival anyone? (pt. 3) “Then God blessed them, and God said to them, ‘Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and SUBDUE (Hebrew “kabash”) it; have DOMINION (Hebrew “radah”) over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” Genesis 2:15 “Then the LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to dress (Hebrew “abad”) and keep.” (Hebrew shamar).

through sin and disobedience, didn’t fulfil his responsibilities. He lost dominance to the serpent. Praise God that Christ came and returned the authority to man! We as His Body, must operate in that Authority. In the beginning, God decided that He would give man the authority and responsibility to govern and have dominion over the earth. He made it plain in the following scriptures: Genesis 1:26 “Then God said, ‘Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have DOMINION (radah) over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” Psalm 8:3-8 “When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have ordained, What is man that You are mindful of him, And the son of man that You visit him? For You have made him a little lower than the angels, And you have crowned him with glory and honor. You have made him to have Dominion (Hebrew ‘mashal’) over the works of Your hands; You have put all things under his feet, All sheep and oxen— Even the beasts of the field, 8 The birds of the air, And the fish of the sea That pass through the paths of the seas.” Genesis 1:28

In the scriptures above there are key Hebrew words and meanings that we must grasp. God has made it part of permanent record, written down and passed from generation to generation. He doesn’t waste this emphasis on something that is not important. He wants us to clearly know our responsibility: Dominion (radah): to tread down, prevail against, reign, rule, take Dominion (mashal): to exercise and have dominion, to rule and cause to rule, reign Subdue (kabash): bring into subjection, tread down, keep under Dress (abad): to labour; to work, serve, tend, labour Keep (shamar): to hedge about, guard, to protect, attend The responsibility from God to Adam was clear. Adam had authority, given to him by God, to dominate, guard, work, protect and rule over the earth. This was God’s plan. This is still God’s plan. Man still has a great responsibility to fulfil. Satan Rules the Earth? If man was given complete authority to have dominion, then why does the Bible make references to the earth being Satan’s domain? For example, Jesus referred to Satan as the “ruler of this world” (John 12:31; 14:30; 16:11). Also, Satan is called the “prince of the power January 2010 4 Prayer Matters Magazine

10

JANUARY | revival anyone? (pt. 3) of the air” (Ephesians 2:2). And in 2 Corinthians 4, he is called “the god of this world.”

ion over Satan and the earth was taken back by Christ!

During the temptation of Christ as recorded in Luke 4:5-8, it states:“And he (Satan) led Him (Jesus) up and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. And the devil said to Him, “I will give You all this domain and its glor y; for it has been handed over to me, and I give it to whomever I wish. “ Therefore if You worship before me, it shall all be Yours.”

1 John 3:8 tells us why Jesus came to earth; Jesus said, “He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. “For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.”

Obviously, Jesus rebuked Satan and said, “It is written, ‘ you shall worship the Lord

Then in John 12:27-31 when Jesus predicts His death on the cross, He said, “Now My soul is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save Me from this hour’? “But for this purpose I came to this hour. “Father, glorif y Your name.” Then a voice came from heaven, saying, “I have both glorified it and will glorif y it again.” Therefore the people who stood by and heard it said that it had thundered. Others said, ‘An angel has spoken to Him.’ Jesus answered and said, “ This voice did not come because of Me, but for your sake. Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out.” “Now the ruler of this world will be cast out” is an incredible statement of victor y and judgment! Jesus also said that, “All things have been handed over to Me by My Father…” (Luke 10:22).

your God and ser ve him only.” But note two important things: first, Satan said that the kingdoms of the world had been “handed over to him”, and second, Jesus didn’t refute that claim! W hen Adam sinned, the earth was handed over to Satan. Hence, the descriptions of Satan being the “god of this world”, “the prince of the power of the air”, and “ruler of this world” were correct. The part that many Christians don’t understand is that the stor y doesn’t end there. The rest of the stor y must be told. Besides power over sin and eteranl death, domin-

Because of sin, the earth was handed over to Satan but Jesus came to take it back and yes, it was handed over to Him! To reaffirm this point, see what Christ said after He arose, “And Jesus came and spoke to them (the disciples), saying, ‘All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth’ (Matthew 28:18). Satan and his minions had been defeated! Colossians 2:14-15 is a powerful visual of what Christ did through His death and resurrection: “and having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.”

JANUARY | revival anyone? (pt. 3) But that’s not all! Jesus gave His followers authority over the enemy too. As recorded in Luke, He sent out seventy-two workers to spread the good news, heal the sick and let people know that “the Kingdom of God was here.” W hen they came back to report to Jesus, they were amazed and thrilled that “even the demons were subject to them in the name of Jesus”, and Jesus’ response was this, “Behold, I have given YOU authority to tread on serpents and scor-

is still active on the earth, he no longer has authority or dominion over the earth. We are Christ’s body and instructed to enforce the victor y and continue the work of the Lord. There is no question that Christ’s threeyear ministr y was dominating. He has handed authority and opportunity to us. He has restored our God-given right of dominion. With that right comes responsibility -huge responsibility. God is waiting for His people to stand up and pray. He is calling His people to take the power that He has given us through the death and resurrection of His son, to pray for the Holy Spirit to manifest like in Christ’s ministr y, like in the Book of Acts and like in the revivals throughout the centuries.

pions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing will injure you.” (Luke 10:17-22). The authority that was handed to Jesus was now given to His followers. Satan no longer had the power or authority. And so it is today!

Do we want our time, our experiences, our churches and our world to be exploding with the power and authority of the Christ? Do we want to continue the work of Christ? Do we want to be used to advance God’s Kingdom? Do we want revival? If we do, then we must pray. God is waiting on us. v

It went full circle: God gave dominion to man; man gave dominion to Satan; Jesus destroyed the devils work; God gave dominion to Jesus (man); Jesus gave the authority back to us (the church, His body)… back to God’s original plan. We are now fully able to fulfil the responsibility that man was meant to have from the beginning. Even though Adam failed, Christ did not. With the power and inf luence of Christ in our hands, we are fully equipped to be the stewards of this earth that God created us to be. Although Satan

Why Do We Pray W

hy is it that Christians are supposed to pray? It seems that we were told early in our walk with Christ to express thanksgiving and to pray for God’s help and mercy when needed, but do we really grasp the full opportunity that prayer provides the Children of God?

If you haven’t thought about your prayer life recently, here is a simple challenge…ponder why you pray and what you expect from your time of prayer. Do you pray out of obligation, because you know you should? Do you pray during services or occasions when you have been told what to pray and maybe even what to say? Is it a repetitious rite? Do you pray believing that the act of prayer will transform you into a stronger, better Christian? Will time in prayer automatically make you more resilient against temptation or sin? Will it earn you “credit” that you may need to cash in later? Do you pray simply so you can have a better day believing that God would surely protect and bless you more if you spent more time on your knees before Him? As we challenge ourselves to consider the role of prayer in

New Beginnings With Christ By Antoinnette Williams

A

t this point in time, are you where God destined you to be when He created you in your mother’s womb? We often start the New Year with resolutions and goals in mind. These are things that we know we want to change for ourselves, but I believe that the Lord wants to begin something new in you this year as well. That means that if you look ahead at where you want to be, you must be considering where it is that God created you to be. The Lord gives us new opportunities and chances year after year. He provides many experiences in our life to get us on the path that He created us for. If we know God as the Beginner, the Alpha of all things, then we have to know that every new chapter in our lives

17

Prayer Matters Magazine 3 January 2010

come from Him. In order for us to begin something new, we have to be prepared to release something old. Ephesians 4:22 lets us know that we are to “put off the old man and put on the new.” It is an exchange. As humans, we have habitual sins, an independent lifestyle, and are driven by our flesh. No matter how far we’ve come in Christ there is always more transformation that needs to occur. When we become too comfortable with our flesh, we often choose to do those things that are easy and familiar. We allow ourselves to hold onto things we excuse as a part of our personality that we say we cannot change. We continue to accommodate and protect our flesh instead of giving ourselves to the life of the Spirit. To grow in Christ, the

old has to go so new things can begin in us. If the Lord wants to begin something new in us in 2010, He will need to remove some things from our lives to make room. He asks us to participate in that removal. We have to willingly let go of the old, because it was our will that participated in putting it on. We must make ourselves aware of the “old man” that is still in us and confront the habitual sins and fleshly impulses that we decide to put on every day. We may not think we are making a decision to hold onto sin, but Ephesians is pretty visual in its context. that allowed him to begin to live his destiny. The Lord changed his name to Paul and completely renewed his mind to one which could now grasp the reality and will of Christ. Paul was given a new beginning with Christ and became an active participant in advancing the Kingdom of God. He began preaching the Good News of Jesus Christ, healing the sick, saving the lost, reviving cities, and dominating this earth with all authority and power to call forth God’s glory to the land. As Paul gave himself to this work, he had to let go of a lot of old things. The experience that brought him to God was powerful and effective and complete for his salvation, but it wasn’t the end of Paul’s personal transformation. He had to continue to crucify his flesh to be more Spirit-led in order to complete the work of his ministry. He acknowledged his weaknesses and continued to exchange the old things for the new things throughout his life.

AZUSA STR REVIV

In April of 1906 two events focused the world’s attention on Los Angeles: The city was impacted by an earthquake that also devastated San Francisco, and services conducted in a small holiness mission on Azusa Street birthed spiritual renewal globally. Thousands of individuals converged on the city to attend the revival at Azusa Street’s mission, where they found a renewed purpose and passion in serving Jesus Christ and were commissioned to share the message of His love and power with others. Almost a century later, the activities of the renowned Azusa Street outpouring in Los Angeles are hailed as one of the greatest events in Christian history. Los Angeles was not the only place and time of spiritual renewal, however. The Spirit of God was being poured out in other parts of the world simultaneously. Revival was sweeping parts of Europe, specifically in Wales. In the United States the same transforming revivals were taking place in Minnesota, North Carolina, and Texas. Among the spiritual manifestations accompanying these outpour21

ings included remarkable healings, complete transformations of lifestyle, deliverance from ungodly habits, physical demonstrations of emotion, and speaking in languages unknown to the speaker. William Seymour arrived in Los Angeles on February 22, 1906, and within two days was preaching at the holiness church pastored by Julia Hutchins, meeting in a home on Bonnie Brae St. He preached on regeneration, sanctification, faith healing, and the baptism of the Holy Ghost with evidence of speaking in other tongues. Some felt that he should discontinue preaching about the baptism of the Holy Spirit and speaking in other tongues because he had not yet experienced the blessing about which he was preaching. A few days later, on April 12, William Seymour finally re-

ceived his baptism at about four o’clock in the morning, after having prayed all night long. The group found an available building at 312 Azusa Street, which had originally been constructed as an African Methodist Episcopal Church. Having fallen into disrepair, the building was used as a stable to house hay and livestock. Nonetheless, it was secured and cleaned in preparation for services. Within days, the Los Angeles press learned of the revival services at the Azusa Street Mission and newspaper reports were published throughout the U.S. and the world. Thousands learned of the revival and were drawn to the meeting. They all came together in worship: men, women, children,

black, white, Hispanic, Asian, rich, poor, illiterate, and educated. The message was the love of God, and unity and equality were priority. Frank Bartleman noted, “The ‘color line’ was washed away by the blood.” Women were provided positions of leadership at the mission as well. In September 1906 a local newspaper reporter frowned on the events taking place and wrote that the Azusa Street mission was a “disgraceful intermingling of the races… They run, jump, shake all over, shout... Some of them pass out and do not move for hours as though they were dead. They claim to be filled with the spirit. They have a one eyed, illiterate, Negro as their preacher who stays on his knees much of the time with his head hidden between the wooden milk crates. thing about the Azusa Street Mission fascinated me; especially the prayer or “tarrying room” on the second floor. Usually one hundred or more black, brown and white people prayerfully waited there for the Holy Spirit to come upon them. Dozens of canes, braces, crutches and blackened smoking pipes leaned against the barn-like walls. Many times waves of glory would come over the tarrying room or meeting room, and people would cry out prayers of thanks or praise as they received the baptism in the Holy Spirit. Meetings used to go past midnight and into the early hours of the morning. Hours there seemed like minutes. Sometimes after a wave of glory, a lot of people would speak in ‘Repent,’ and he's supposed to be running the tongues. Then a holy quietness would come thing... They repeatedly sing the same song, over the place, followed by a chorus of prayer ‘The Comforter Has Come.’” in languages we had never before heard. Yet, while some stirred the waters of opposition, the river of God’s Spirit was flowing mightily in Los Angeles. God had proven faithful in answering prayer; revival had come. Within months the Azusa Street mission, known as the Apostolic Faith Mission, was the largest congregation in the city, with as many as 1300 attending the services and the revival fervor continued for three years. Services were held three times daily, often without a break in the “spontaneous” services. Humility was fundamental at the mission, and Seymour often admonished that “our highest place is low at His [Jesus’] feet.” EYEWITNESS ACCOUNT: Participant A. C. Valdez, Sr. later wrote: On the platform, a black man [Seymour] sat behind two wooden boxes, one on top of the other. They were his pulpit…. Occasionally, as Pastor Seymour prayed, his head would be so low that it disappeared behind the top wooden box…. Every-

Many were fell out in the Spirit, buckling to the floor, unconscious, in a beautiful Holy Spirit cloud, and the Lord gave them visions. How I enjoyed shouting and praising God. During the tarrying, we used to break out in songs about Jesus and the Holy Spirit, “Fill Me Now,” “Joy Unspeakable,” and “Love Lifted Me.” Praise about the cleansing and precious blood of Jesus would just spring from our mouths. In between choruses, heavenly music would fill the hall, and we would break into tears. Suddenly the crowd seemed to forget how to sing in English. Out of their mouths came new languages and lovely harmony that no human beings could have learned. BEYOND AZUSA STREET: As a direct result of the Azusa Street outpouring, thousands of individuals were led into a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ. People began to study the Word of God, become convicted of sin, and surrender their lives to Christ. They

were baptized with the Holy Ghost, who led and guided them into greater spiritual truths found in the Word of God. The Spirit of God empowered them with boldness to fulfill the great commission. Signs and wonders followed those who believed, such as blinded eyes being opened, deaf being able to hear, mute being able to speak, the lame made to walk, and the dead raised to life again. Such reports are commonplace among these early Pentecostal believers, and all of these signs testify of the glory and power of the Risen Christ. These early Spirit-filled believers considered everyone to be witnesses, and many sailed to foreign lands as missionaries to share the gospel message. This move of God was not only for Los Angeles, but it was for the whole world—even future generations. What happened at Azusa Street has helped renew Christianity, bringing fresh vision and passion to the Great Commission. Consumed with zeal for God and empowered by the Holy Spirit, individuals have taken the Word of God to diverse villages and races across the globe. As a result many have learned of the love and grace of Christ, ultimately preparing the world for His return. That same power of God is still filling men and women with the Holy Spirit to continue the work of Christ throughout the world. Ultimately hundreds of millions have been reached as an indirect result of Azusa Street. Today there are more than 500 million Pentecostal and Charismatic believers across the globe. William Joseph Seymour, pastor of the Azusa Street mission, is recognized globally for his influence on the Pentecostal movement of the Twentieth Century. Born on May 2, 1870 in Centerville, Louisiana, his parents had been slaves and his father fought with the Union

Army during the US Civil War. Seymour was reared in poverty and began traveling at a young age—living in Memphis and St. Louis. At age 25, he worked as a waiter for some of the most upscale restaurants and hotels in Indianapolis. It was in Indianapolis, IN. that William Seymour personally accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior. Pastor Seymour led these services with the help of a volunteer staff comprised of blacks, whites, men and women. The revival contin-

ued unabated for about three years, until 1909. During the peak of the Azusa Street meetings, Seymour married Jennie Evans Moore on May 13, 1908. She and Seymour formed a ministry team, and she often preached at the mission in his absence. The couple resided in a small apartment above the mission. He continued to serve as pastor of the Mission on Azusa Street. Rev. Seymour died on September 28, 1922, and is buried at Evergreen Cemetery in East Los Angeles, California. His widow, Jennie, continued to pastor the mission after his death until at least 1931. v

od likes it when we pray according to scripture.

In James 1:6-8, we find these words,

“But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a doubleminded man, unstable in all he does.” God is a God of His word when the scriptures are nice and when they are not so nice. We know that God is a loving and kind God, but when you read James 1:6-8, He doesn't sound loving and kind

JANUARY | prayer secrets into prayer. To determine this, you must know exactly what James is talking about when he uses the Greek word for “wavering”. Wavering means to hesitate, stagger, or doubt. This means that you are in the act of staggering and doubting when you're talking to God; it means you are going into your prayer closet not really sure of exactly what it is you are going to talk to God about or what you expect Him to do. Some people believe that when you go to God you have to be weak and cannot be real with Him. However, we are sons and daughters of God and He wants us to come to Him that way – as His children, heirs. We are washed clean by the blood of Jesus. When you go to God, there can be emotions, but you don't have to be hesitant, staggering and filled with doubt, wondering if He wants you to talk to Him. I can get emotional when I pray, but that doesn't mean that I lose my mind and get filled with confusion. I can be emotional but still pray in faith. I can be emotional without being double minded. To waver means not only to be hesitant, but to change your mind, back up, and restart. It means you’ve changed your mind or haven’t focused on a clear expectation; you doubt whether God will do what you are asking Him for. God does not like to be doubted. He doesn’t like it when you second guess His will, ability or love. The person that is wavering shall not receive anything of the Lord. God is not going to violate His Word. Double minded means of two minds - back and forth. I think this, and then I change up. Being double minded means to be confused. God is not the author of confusion. You have to be of one mind when you go to God in prayer. If you’ve been wavering in your prayer closet, you shouldn’t be expecting the same results as prayers made in faith. Get rid of wavering, confusion, doubt and not knowing what to pray. Get yourself together, focus and then pray without hesitancy. Christ gave good advice in Matthew 5:37. He said, let your “yes” be “yes” and your “no” be “no”. As you read, study and sit underneath the Word and grow, the Lord will work with you and bring 27

Prayer Matters Magazine 3 January 2010

forth maturity. The Bible says that if you will draw closer to God then He will draw closer to you. Your effort is always met by the Lord. Therefore, you should invest in assessing and improving the manner in which you pray. So what should be our state of mind when we get ready to pray? James 1:6 says, "But let him ask in faith..." If we defeat the wavering, we're not going to be like the wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed back and forth when we go to God in prayer. When we have faith, it means we've settled in, we're focused, we know what we want to say. We're ready to pray specifically and with expectation. When you’re entering the Throne Room, you are ready to have communication with your God. Aren’t you in the presence of the One who can provide every need? The One who has the earth as His footstool? Know what it is that you're going to ask or talk to God about. Talk to Him in an organized manner and let your requests be made known. Do it without wavering or being double minded and you will have an audience with the God of Heaven and Earth. v Questions? Comments? Email: contact@prayermattersmagazine.org
