The Hershorin Schiff Story A legacy of education and acceptance that continues today The Hershorin Schiff Community Day School is committed to providing a diverse, engaging, project-based learning environment rooted in the Jewish values of honesty, integrity, mutual trust and respect. The school honors the memories of its namesakes through these values as well as the impact it has on local children and families. Isador Irving Hershorin was born during his parents’ immigration to America. In 1918, at the age of 12, he lost his father and became the patriarch of his family. Despite having to work to provide for his mother and three siblings, he remained dedicated to his education and graduated from high school. An avid reader, his thirst for knowledge continued throughout his life. The family of Herbert Schiff came to the U.S. from Lithuania. Herbert (pictured here with Betty) recognized that through learning about our differences, we are better able to accept and appreciate one another’s value. He felt strongly that Jewish organizations should welcome and include non-Jewish people, beginning at an early age. The proud legacy of the Hershorin Schiff families continues at Community Day through the support and leadership of Irving’s son, Richard Hershorin, and Richard’s daughter, Dr. Laura Hershorin.

Hershorin Schiff Community Day School Build community, change the world

“As my parents planted for me before I was born, so do I plant for those who will come after me.” ~Talmud Community Day School is uniquely positioned to build bridges between different faiths, levels of observance, and cultures in order to create a safe, inclusive environment for children to learn, play and grow. Every day, in classrooms and on its playgrounds, the school showcases a model of acceptance and understanding that it hopes will inspire a vision for a more just and peaceful future.

Community Day also works to build bridges between the school community and peers and institutions in Israel. Last year, students from Tel Mond spent 10 days in Sarasota; this year, Community Day students will travel to Tel Mond. Community Day is also the only U.S. school participating in a World ORT collaborative science program, working in tandem with an Israeli school in Kiryat Gam. Strengthening Our Jewish Community One Child at a Time

M

any studies show the best way to fuel children’s’ love of Judaism is to send them to Israel and engage them in dialogue about the United States-Israel relationship. This Happy Birthday Israel event celebrates members of our community who have been instrumental in starting and supporting programs that provide Israel and pro-Israel experiences for teens in Sarasota-Manatee. We are proud to report that since 2006, more than 300 teenagers have had the privilege of going to Israel or participating in Israel advocacy programs due to the generosity of our honorees.

The Shapiro Teen Engagement Program

STEP’s service, learning, and leadership programs enable students to build their academic resumes and fulfill The Jewish Federation’s ongoing commitment to nurture exploration of Jewish life and identity. Graduates of the STEP program have continued to stay involved in Jewish life through participation in Hillel, Birthright, AIPAC, St andWit hUs, study abroad and gap years in Israel. They have become youth group advisors, camp counselors, Jewish educators and more. This long term investment in our youth teaches them the importance of giving back and prepares them to become the next generation of Jewish leaders.

Alexander Muss HS in Israel

Alexander Muss High School in Israel (AMHSI) is a pluralistic, college prep, international accredited study abroad program for high schoolers where the land of Israel is a living classroom. Students can participate in a 6-,

8- or 18-week experiential learning program where they visit the very sites they study.

Send-a-Kid-to-Israel-Program

Founded in 1995, this scholarship program makes travel to Israel for all teens in our community possible. Local Jewish teens and young adults aged 13-30 who are participating in an organized program to Israel are eligible. Scores of Sarasota-Manatee young adults have benefited from this program.

March of the Living

March of the Living is a two-week international, educational program bringing Jewish teens and adults from all over the world to Poland on Yom Hashoah (Holocaust Memorial Day) to march from Auschwitz to Birkenau, the largest concentration camp complex built during World War II, and then to Israel to observe Yom HaZikaron (Israel Memorial Day) and Yom Ha’Atzmaut (Israel Independence

TESTIMONIALS Marisa Briefman

2008 SKIP Recipient In the summer of 2008, I was awarded a SKIP scholarship to attend my first Israel trip: USY Poland/Israel Pilgrimage. I had such an incredible experience that I was determined to go back to Israel for my Junior Year abroad. I made that dream a reality in 2012 when, with the help of The Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee, I attended Hebrew University in Jerusalem. Both of these opportunities were incredibly life changing, and have provided me with unforgettable experiences.

Each year, the Federation selects local high school students to participate in the prestigious Bob Malkin Young Ambassadors Teen Leadership Program (BMYA) which culminates in a two-week mission to Israel. The program includes pre- and post- mission Josh Yunis 2017 BMYA Recipient MALKIN YOUNG AMBASSADORS meetings and leader- BOBTEEN LEADERSHIP PROGRAM Thank you so much for the opporBOB MALKIN YOUNG AMBASSADORS ship training, during TEEN LEADERSHIP PROGRAM tunity to spend time in Israel. Levenson Exchange and Advocacy Program

LEAP is a brand new initiative developed to strengthen the bond between The Jewish Federation’s Bob Malkin Young Ambassadors and Tel Mond Young Ambassadors programs, and to create a rich culturalexchange between Sarasota and Tel Mond, Israel. LEAP is a unique program where the groups of Young Ambassadors from each region spend time with each other first in Israel, then in Sarasota, learning about each other’s lives and communities. đ&#x;Ž‚

2016 BMYA Recipient I now have a closer connection to not only my faith, but other young people my age who share the same passion for Israel. I traveled back home with incredible memories and lifelong friends.

Anat Hanna Eshet

2018 LEAP Program Coordinator, Tel Mond Community Center We held our first meeting this week with the Tel Mond participants and their parents. The excitement in the air could not be ignored! No distance, be it time or geographical, can obliterate the Jewish identity from the heart of a Jew. The need for a connection between Jews is embedded in the Jewish DNA; even technology can't be a substitute for that important human connection. We are all very excited about the Sarasota teens' visit in Israel and in Tel Mond especially.

ea Friedman grew up in New York City and came to Sarasota in 1948. Affectionately known as “Queen Bea,â€? Bea has made an indelible mark on the Sarasota-Manatee Jewish community. As an early supporter of the Bob Malkin Young Ambassador’s program, Bea’s generosity has allowed dozens of Jewish teenagers to experience Israel. These ambassadors develop leadership skills, explore who they are as individuals and as team members, and learn first-hand the importance of Israel to Jews around the world. In addition, Bea has established a legacy gift that provides Sarasota-Manatee teens with scholarships to attend the Alexander Muss High School in Israel (AMHSI), a study-abroad, immersive 6, 8, or 18-week accredited program. This amazing program where the land of Israel is a living classroom, has engaged over 26,000 students worldwide.

Bea has been a board member of our Jewish Federation, and a supporter of JFCS, the Sarasota Orchestra, Embracing Our Differences and many more local Jewish and community organizations. Bea has always believed it is important to give back to her community. She once said, “We owe this to our children and grandchildren, to make the world safe and loving for them.â€? Her two great loves are The Jewish Federation and the Sarasota Orchestra. “Judaism and fine music simply go together. It brings me great joy to support both of these fine organizations,â€? said Bea. đ&#x;Ž‚

2017 AMHSI Alumni I visited the Kotel on Shabbat. The area was packed and I was drawn to a group of 20-30 women who were standing in a circle singing and clapping. The joy on their faces and in their movements made me want to join in. I walked over, and these womenwhom I’d never met before, immediately opened up the circle and invited me in. I didn’t know the songs they were singing, but it didn’t matter because my heart knew the meaning. That feeling of total inclusion is something I will carry with me forever.

obert and Esther Heller, both born and raised in the Bronx, New York, first visited Sarasota in the late 1970’s. Bob remembers the grief his family experienced when he was a young boy, first in hearing about the U.S. government turning back the ship St. Louis and then discovering his paternal grandparents were murdered by the Nazis at Babi Yar. "Although I was only 8-years old at the time, these events shaped my life forever, and made me realize how important a safe and secure Israel is to the survival of our Jewish people. Today it is still evident that our fellow Jews from France, England and countries where Jews are at risk have only one safe place to go...Israel." They had never been to Israel, but after becoming involved with Federation, have visited three times, finding it “a wondrous country.â€? Together, they founded The Robert and Esther Heller Israel Advocacy Initiative (now the Heller CRC) of The Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee. This innovative, exciting initiative has brought programs about Israel advocacy, anti-Semitism, Iran and the threat of radical Islam to our community and country. The Heller CRC has become one of the most impactful of our Federation programs.

Bob and Esther's leadership and vision has made a huge difference to our Federation. The Community Relations Committee (CRC) plays an integral role in the education and advocacy that our Federation organizes. With four arms (Advocacy, Outreach, Holocaust Awareness and Hillel Oversight) it reaches almost all areas of our Jewish and non-Jewish community. With strong relationships within the Israeli Consulate in Miami, AIPAC, The AntiDefamation League, the Bradenton Area Economic Development Center, local community Foundations, local businesses and more, our CRC has a robust and wellknown reputation for being smart advocates for Israel and to the Jewish people. Bob and Esther have transformed how we advocate and educate, to the point that we have been recognized at a national level for our work. None of it would be possible without the foresight that Bob and Esther had to engage with our Christian friends and neighbors to make an even bigger impact with regard to Israel advocacy. Esther has been a volunteer for the Senior Outreach Service at JFCS, and strongly supports our Federation efforts for Israel. Esther said, "All I wish for is Israel to be free of terrorism and be safe and prosperous forever." đ&#x;Ž‚

etty and Herb Schiff (z’l) came to Sarasota from Columbus, Ohio in 1970. From the moment they arrived to our sunny shores, they have been involved in Jewish and community projects and organizations. Herb was a leader in bringing the first wave of Ethiopian immigrants to Israel. Together, they established the Betty and Herbert Schiff Send-A-Kid-to-Israel program at The Jewish Federation 22 years ago. The first recipients were their own grandchildren, and since then hundreds of our Sarasota-Manatee teens have received scholarships to participate in Israel travel experiences. Open to teens and young adults aged 13-30, the SKIP program allows them to participate for 3 weeks up to one year. The Schiffs built a wonderful legacy here in Sarasota, passed on to their daughter Patti Hershorin (z’l) and son-in-law Richard, granddaughter Laura and great-granddaughter Emma. The entire Schiff/Hershorin family has been committed to Jewish community and Israeli causes. Patti worked on a kibbutz in Israel as a teen, and later became chapter, then regional director of ORT, and a national board member of that fine organization. She was a board member of our Jewish Federation.

Herb, Betty and Patti's vision and legacy is being honored and continued through the family’s involvement in the Hershorin Schiff Community Day School, where Jewish and non-Jewish children are taught about Judaism and Israel. This April, our Jewish Federation and the Hershorin Schiff Community Day School are sponsoring 10 children to visit Tel Mond, Israel as part of a student exchange program. Betty and Herb Schiff were so proud of "our beautiful little democracy in the Middle East," and wished for Israel to grow and flourish. The Schiff/Hershorin children and grandchildren have helped to make that wish a reality. đ&#x;Ž‚

The Shapiros were wonderful early supporters to the Federation’s Bob Malkin Young Ambassadors and Send-AKid-To-Israel programs in an effort to interest Sarasota-Manatee area kids in visiting Israel. During Operation Exodus, Sam and Sally sponsored and gave hands-on help to a “refusenikâ€? family who fled the Soviet Union and immigrated to Sarasota. Sam and Sally have both served as board members of The Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee and Sam has been honored as a life-time member of the board. Back in Ohio, they also were very active participants in many Israeli-related causes. Sam and Sally shared a vision to work with The Jewish Federation of SarasotaManatee to create a gateway for local Jewish teens to become engaged with their community, Judaism and Israel. That vision has become a reality with the creation of STEP—The Shapiro Teen Engagement program. STEP’s mission is to educate, engage and empower Jewish teens to STEP into leadership roles.

SAM & SALLY SHAPIRO The couple frequently invested in cultivating leadership skills by sending our community Jewish teens and college students to Jewish conferences, seminars and conventions. Recently they sent high school students to a BBYO conference and a Committee for Accuracy in Middle East Reporting in American (CAMERA) seminar in Boston. Sam was also an early supporter of the Glasser-Schoenbaum Human Services Center, an umbrella organization that provides support to eighteen different local agencies dedicated to helping people in need. They created the “Sam and Sally Shapiro Babies and Children Medical Centerâ€? at the GlasserSchoenbaum campus to provide much needed medical and dental care to children under the age of 18 in our community. Sam prayed for the day when we will have an Israel with peace and secure borders where its people will enjoy tranquility among all nations. HONORARY CHAIRS ALAN and RUTH ADES Alan and Ruth have been involved together in Jewish community activities for most of their married life, and have been board members and leaders for our Jewish Federation. Among the experiences they cherish are the many trips to the former Soviet Union in the mid 1980’s to visit oppressed Jewish refuseniks and their families to offer them encouragement and support when emigration for these refuseniks was but a dream. Many of these same refuseniks were finally able to make Aliyah. Alan and Ruth were there to greet them in Israel, and help them became proud and productive citizens of Eretz Yisrael. LARRY GREENSPON and MARY GRATEHOUSE Larry Greenspon is a man who adores children, tennis and Israel which is evident from his long term involvement with The Israel Tennis Centers. Through the ITC, Larry’s philanthropy has helped thousands of vulnerable Israeli children develop skills for life including perseverance and self-esteem and the fostering of peaceful coexistence and tolerance through tennis. The premier tennis center in Ramat Hasharon was rededicated last year in the name of Larry and his fiancé, Mary Gratehouse. Larry’s generosity is evident throughout the ITC including the Greenspon Clay Court in honor of his parents, the Greenspon Restaurant Pavilion and the Greenspon Entranceway. Larry is a past international chair of the ITC and serves on its international and US boards. This year Larry and Mary were the lead sponsors for The Federation’s Israel @70 program, and Larry was honored with the “Man of Valor” award by our Federation in 2017.

MICHELLE and JONATHAN MITCHELL Jonathan and Michelle have done so much for Israel, from building medical clinics and other healthcare facilities, to schools for the gifted and technical training, to day care centers for children and seniors. They established programs in education, created entrepreneurial opportunities for promising industrial leaders, and granted financial assistance for medical research. Jonathan has spent years lobbying our elected officials on behalf of the US-Israel relationship. Presently they are investing in Israel’s high-tech and scientific prowess for the sake of bolstering the economy of the Jewish State. Two examples of their commitment to Israel are the Mitchell Academy for Arts and Science and Mitchell Children’s Day Care in Israel. Michelle is now serving on our Federation’s Board of Directors.

LINDA and BOB ROSENBLUTH Dr. Robert and Linda Rosenbluth have been leaders in our community for years, supporting our Federation, Project Renewal, and Sister Cities (Tel Mond, Israel). They helped found the Florida Studio Theatre Program, “Young Playrights,” with Sister Cities. Linda and Bob have led many trips to Israel highlighting Tel Mond. They initiated “Operation Exodus” in our community, leading the effort to free our Russian Jewish brothers and sisters. As an ob-gyn, Bob

HONORARY CHAIRS delivered most of the babies of Russians who immigrated to Sarasota.

BETTY SCHOENBAUM Betty has been one of the great pillars of our Jewish and general community. Betty is a lifetime member of the board of our Jewish Federation and a true visionary for Israel. She has been able to imagine a dream, develop it, and bring it to spectacular conclusions. This is beautifully exemplified by the Betty and Alex Schoenbaum Regional Library in Tel Mond and by the Alex and Betty Schoenbaum Science, Education, Cultural and Sports Campus in Kiryat Yam. The Campus impacts Ethiopian and Russian immigrant children, affording them the opportunity to interact with one another through education and sports. Betty believes the biggest challenge facing our Jewish community today is educating our young Jews about their responsibility to continue Israel and Judaism for all eternity.â€?

REVEREND DR. TOM PFAFF

As a teen in Skokie, IL, Reverend Dr. Tom Pfaff witnessed many Bar Mitzvahs, the neo-Nazi swastika march on City Hall and the pain felt by dear friends’ parents who were Holocaust survivors. After receiving a masters and doctorate in divinity and becoming a re-born Christian, Reverend

Pfaff’s love for his Jewish friends grew into a love for Israel - the Holy Land. Reverend Pfaff ministers as The Founder and Mother Hen of the Sarasota Ministerial Association. He is an ordained Elder in the United Methodist Church. Chaplain Tom pastored at four United Methodist Churches and was Goodwill Manasota’s Chaplain for 15 years. đ&#x;Ž‚

We are honored to have the support of these Honorary Chairs and are blessed by their leadership and commitment to The Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee and the State of Israel!

Israel is about giving. A country under constant threat of annihilation for 70 years continues giving the world – even its enemies – far more than any nation on this planet. Its compassionate, selfless citizens travel the globe offering disaster relief to suffering citizens of governments that consistently vote to punish Israel in the United Nations. Its professionals assist drought-ridden regions with the latest technology to revitalize agricultural communities. Its brilliant minds advance our standard of living and bring life to millions who otherwise would perish. We love Israel and are so proud of her accomplishments! ~ Michelle and Jonathan Mitchell
