Dear Friends, This has been an incredible year for The Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee! So many people around the world have been touched by the work we do — none of which would be possible without the thousands of generous contributions we receive each year from people like you. Our goal is to create a thriving community that embraces diverse individuals, offers meaningful Jewish experiences, and is at the forefront of the next Jewish renaissance. This year, we have taken great strides to accomplish this goal: •
Our partnerships with local, national and international organizations have provided us with opportunities to impact the lives of countless children and adults throughout the world. These collaborations have addressed basic needs, such as hunger and medical care, taught lessons of inclusivity and respect, and provided Jewish experiences through education, food, music, and holiday celebrations.
• Our programming has enabled thousands of individuals to connect with Judaism on their own terms. • Our commitment to Jewish youth has expanded to include social and educational programming, travel experiences, and Israel advocacy training. • Our organizational leadership has positioned our Federation to be able to respond and adapt to a constantly-evolving Jewish world — here in Sarasota-Manatee and around the world. The mission of The Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee is to strengthen Jewish life and identity in our community, provide for Jewish people in need, and promote support for Israel. We recognize that we cannot do this alone — it takes a strong, vibrant community to accomplish these important tasks. By engaging both the Jewish and secular communities, we build relationships that allow us to broaden the menu of touch points through which individuals can become involved, to work more closely with donors to match their philanthropic goals with local and global community needs, and to strategically plan for the future. Some of the ways we fulfill our mission •
Care for the Vulnerable: We transform the lives of those who are living below the poverty line, unemployed, elderly, abused and at risk. Together we offer a hand to improve their quality of life, help them achieve greater independence and fulfill their human potential.

Nurture and Strengthen Jewish Life, Education and Values: We ensure that area youth have meaningful Jewish camp and Israel experiences, allowing them to understand and explore their Jewish heritage. This investment in the next generation ensures that our community will remain vibrant for generations to come.

Advance our Communal Interests: Our Jewish Federation works to create a greater understanding of the unique contributions we as Jews can make to the community at-large. Our partnerships with Embracing Our Differences, NAACP, Education Foundation of Sarasota County, All Faiths Food Bank, and Florida Studio Theatre, among others, provide us the ability to work collectively to combat hunger, bullying, literacy and more.

Support Israel: Since our Federation’s inception, we have been an advocate for, and an ally to, the people of Israel. Through the Robert and Esther Heller Israel Advocacy Initiative, we build relationships with the interfaith, pro-Israel community in an effort to broaden our support network and fight BDS. Our increased presence on area college campuses prepares students to defend themselves against anti-Semitism and anti-Israel rhetoric.

CARE
FOR THE VULNERABLE
Providing assistance to atrisk populations, whether in Sarasota-Manatee, in Israel, or in any of the more than 60 countries where Jews live, is of utmost importance to our Federation. In 2016, more than was distributed to JFCS of the Suncoast, Inc. and overseas partners, to provide basic needs and emergency services such as food, shelter and medical care, to thousands of individuals who need it most.

Jewish Healing Program at JFCS of the
Suncoast, Inc. Passover Seders were held
at 21 facilities throughout Sarasota,
serving
164 elderly Jews.
• Through our collaboration with JFCS of
the Suncoast, Inc. and area synagogues,
our Federation funded Shabbat and
Jewish holiday celebrations for Holocaust
survivors and residents of senior living
facilities throughout Sarasota-Manatee that
served more than
500 Jewish residents.
• Our multi-year partnership with Leket –
Israel’s Food Bank – funded a food truck
(pictured above) that provided rescued food
to
140,000 needy Israelis each week.
9,059 hungry Jews received hot meals and 20,934 seniors
• In the former Soviet Union,
and children survived the winter with warm
clothing, blankets and heating assistance as a
result of our work with the American Jewish Joint
Distribution Committee.
• Through our support of Youth Futures
in Sderot, a Jewish Agency for Israel project,
130 at-risk children and their families
received mediated intervention.

NURTURE AND STRENGTHEN
JEWISH LIFE, EDUCATION AND VALUES Our Federation is committed to a strong and vibrant Jewish community, one that meets the needs of Jews from all backgrounds and at all levels of observance. Through programs such as PJ Library and Overnight Camp Grants, we ensure that our Jewish youth have access to positive and fun Jewish experiences; we connect with our teens through the Shapiro Teen Engagement Program where they learn leadership skills through a Jewish lens; we engage adults through various social, educational and cultural arts experiences designed to highlight Jewish culture and values.

OUR COMMUNAL INTERESTS
While our Federation plays an integral role in supporting the humanitarian and cultural needs of our Jewish community, we are also the epicenter of community coalition building in Sarasota-Manatee. Through partnerships with local and international agencies, we are able to amplify our impact worldwide. We are especially proud of the many relationships we’ve built with organizations like All Faiths Food Bank, Florida Studio Theatre, NAACP, the Sarasota Ministerial Association, and Perlman Music Program/Suncoast, which have an enormous impact on the entire community — all ages, backgrounds and cultures. •

This was an exciting year for students on our area college campuses. Our Federation created Gulf Coast Hillel to focus on the needs of students at USF Sarasota-Manatee, Ringling School of Art + Design, New College of Florida, and Florida Gulf Coast University. students celebrated Shabbat and Jewish holidays, learned leadership and advocacy skills, and engaged in important discussions with other students about Israel and various topics of Jewish interest.

SUPPORT FOR ISRAEL
Over the past 5 years we have taken more than interfaith clergy, business and community leaders to Israel for life-changing and community building trips. As a result of these trips, we have seen significant growth in the non-Jewish community joining us to advocate for causes close to our hearts, causes that have now become close to their hearts. Our community is more like a family thanks to the relationships built on allof the interfaith missions to Israel over the years.

Solidarity, friendship and activism are all words that bind us when the entire SarasotaManatee community shows up to support Israel in times of need. Our friends at the NAACP, Sarasota Ministerial Association, Rabbinic Council and many more organizations and civic groups have stepped on our stages to express their devotion to the idea that Israel has the right to exist as an independent Jewish State.

Last year, students traveled to Israel with the support of our Federation. Our Bob Malkin Young Ambassadors Mission to Israel has connected more than Sarasota-Manatee students with our beloved Israel over the last decade. • The 2nd annual Shonim B’Yachad exhibit, the Israel version of Embracing Our Differences, was held at the Dizengoff Center in Tel Aviv. More than people, including Israelis, students, tourists, and leaders from the government sector, education and the arts experienced the exhibit.

The Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee is the central fundraising and planning organization for the Sarasota-Manatee Jewish community. The Federation engages in a wide range of financial resource development efforts in order to ensure a stream of funding that will help the community remain strong and vibrant.
Annual Campaign – $2,300,642 The Annual Unrestricted Campaign raises money to meet the needs of our partner agencies in Sarasota-Manatee, in Israel and in 60 countries around the world.
Program/Event Sponsorship – $504,592 This sponsorship income allows our Federation to produce impactful programs like Violins of Hope, the Marc Chagall exhibit, the Jewish Film Festival and more. These events provide opportunities for everyone in the community to connect to Jewish life in a way that is comfortable and accessible to all.
Directed Giving – $780,327 These are donor-directed dollars that benefit local, national and international non-profit organizations, enabling donors to meet their philanthropic goals with the assistance of our Federation.
Endowment Fund – $2,032,036 These dollars represent contributions to our Federation’s Jewish Community Endowment Fund.
Campus Rental Income – $285,555 This annual revenue is generated from renting space and buildings on the Federation campus. This revenue offsets the costs of operating our campus and community programs.
Ad Sales – $262,650 Our Federation sells ads in our monthly Jewish News and annual Connections Magazine to offset the expense of producing these popular publications.
Ticket Sales – $148,015 This is income derived from ticket sales for events such as the Jewish Film Festival, Women's Day, Violins of Hope, lecture series and other programs. 17

The Jewish Federation is committed to bringing events to our community that celebrate Jewish values, diversity, arts and culture, Israel, and more.
Violins of Hope

The Violins of Hope program featured violins and one viola that were played by Jews in concentration camps and ghettos throughout Europe during the Holocaust. These carefully restored instruments were seen and heard by thousands of people in our community. Through our partnership with Aviva, Embracing Our Differences, the School Boards of both Manatee and Sarasota Counties, the Catholic Diocese and Hershorin Schiff Community Day School,

more than students and adults were impacted by the stories these violins told about the Holocaust and their owners. Performers from the Sarasota Orchestra and the Perlman Music Program/ Suncoast played these instruments and through them, shared their history with thousands more individuals at concerts and lectures across our two-county area.

Jewish Film Festival
Now celebrating its 8th year, the JFF continues to delight and fascinate audiences with diverse films highlighting the Jewish experience. This year’s films, including comedies, dramas, and documentaries, covered topics ranging from the Holocaust to modern day Israel. More than tickets were sold to this year's festival, a six-fold increase since the event's inception.

Women’s Day
with Paula Abdul This highly anticipated annual luncheon continues to delight audiences. The event featured twotime Grammy Award and American Music Award winner Paula Abdul, who shared her stories about the entertainment industry, celebrating her Bat Mitzvah in Israel in 2013, and more with an audience of more than women.
The Color of Dreams With this exhibit, we achieved our goal of bringing Israel to Sarasota-Manatee, while giving tens of thousands of area residents the opportunity to learn more about the Jewish significance of Marc Chagall’s body of work and his relationship with Israel. Our Federation partnered with Marie Selby Botanical Gardens to present this exhibit in springsummer 2017. At the centerpiece of the exhibit was “The Lovers,” an oil painting Chagall created in 1937 that was on loan from the collections of The Israel Museum, Jerusalem. Visitors to the exhibit also experienced brilliantly colored replicas of some of Chagall’s stained glass works, including “The Tree of Life,” and “The Twelve Tribes of Israel.”
