BEN-GURION EPILOGUE

In the great depths of the Stephen Spielberg Jewish Film Archive in Jerusalem and the Ben-Gurion Archives in the Negev, six hours of interview footage was discovered of one of modern history’s greatest leaders, David Ben-Gurion*. Filmed 50 years ago, but never aired, it is 1968 and he is 82 years old, five years before his death. He lives in his secluded home in the desert, removed from all political discourse, which allows him a hindsight perspective on the Zionist enterprise. BenGurion’s introspective soul searching is the focus of this film; his clear voice provides a surprising vision for today’s crucial decisions and the future of Israel. *Yariv Mozer and Yael Perlov, the editor and co-producer of the documentary, uncovered the lost interview almost by chance, in the Steven Spielberg Jewish Film Archive in Jerusalem. There, while working to restore an old and unsuccessful feature film about Ben-Gurion by Ms. Perlov’s late father, David Perlov, they tripped across the silent film reels. It took six months to find the soundtrack, which they did in the Ben-Gurion Archives in the Negev.

AN ISRAELI LOVE STORY

A poignant and authentic film based on the true story of the love affair between Pnina Gary, from Nahalal, and Eli Ben–Zvi, son of Rachel Yanait and Yitzhak Ben-Zvi the Second President of the State of Israel. The story of their romance is set in 1947 during the tumultuous period of the end of the British Mandate and pre-state Israel. An unexpected meeting on a bus, Margalit falls in love with Eli instantly. Trying to get close to him, but always too busy with the Palmach, the barriers finally come down and Margalit moves in with Eli. They set a date for their wedding, but Israel’s harsh reality intervenes. The film is a strikingly human portrayal against the backdrop of a historical period, mixing a private story with a national narrative.

MR. PREDICTABLE

This charming contemporary film introduces you to Adi, a sensitive 5-year-old, whose father dies in the war in Lebanon. His father’s parting words before leaving for military duty were, “be a good boy, help your mother, and be responsible.” Adi kept his promise: he helped more than enough at home, at kindergarten, at school, in the military, in his marriage— he became the most thoughtful man you can imagine. Or to put it in other words— Adi became a “sucker” who was exploited by his mother, his wife, his son, his boss and nearly everyone he ever met. Things change radically on the day Adi meets Natalia— a sweet, young, wild girl who entices Adi into a life full of emotions, passion and romance. Now Adi has to choose between love and reason, between dreams and reality, between Natalia and his own family. Will he go on being a good boy? Or will he, for the first time in his life, be brave enough to be what he really wants to be? THE WEDDING PLAN

An entertaining and humorous comedy about Michal, an Orthodox Jew, who has a strong desire for love and romance as well as an unshakable faith that her prayers will be answered. When her fiancé bows out a month before their wedding, Michal refuses to cancel the wedding arrangements. Deciding to put her faith in G-d and the aptitudes of a couple of matchmakers, Michal holds on to her previously planned wedding date. If marriage is good for her, she reasons, then G-d will provide. Her mother and sister are mortified but supportive. Michal goes out on dates, some quite amusing, and continues to work as the proprietor of a mobile petting zoo. Not your typical sexy Hollywood ingénue, but for those so inclined, an endorsement that G-d does indeed work in mysterious ways.

AMOR

A moving drama that takes you on an emotional ride of what life and true love sometimes demands of us. After years of wandering, Daniel returns to his childhood home in Israel. No one is sure why he has returned or how long he will stay, and Daniel isn’t talking. When he finds that the love of his life, a former ballet teacher, lies bedridden and without hope of recovery, Daniel wants to end her life. Those who love her refuse, protesting that religious law prohibits euthanasia. Daniel’s love for her faces its ultimate test: can he do the unimaginable and give her the release she cannot achieve herself? What price will he pay for his decision?

IN BETWEEN

This bittersweet film features three Palestinian women living in Tel Aviv; each is fighting her own battle for independence and fulfilment. We see how each woman tries to find a balance between traditional and modern culture. As the title suggests, these women occupy a liminal space, caught between freedom and repression, religion and secularism, the past and the future. In their Tel Aviv apartment, Muslim lawyer and chain-smoking party girl Layla and her friend Salma, a lesbian from a Christian family, welcome a new flat-mate, hijab-wearing Nour, who is in her last year of university. Although the women come from very different backgrounds, each with different goals in life, these three ‘shekels in the fountain’ do gradually bond amd live life in the melting pot that is Tel Aviv.

A QUIET HEART

In present day Jerusalem, a city increasingly dominated by religious fanaticism, Naomi, a secular young woman seeks refuge from the pressure of her life as a concert pianist. Overwhelmed by the expectations of her parents and her colleagues in Tel Aviv, Naomi seeks anonymity and solitude in the ancient city. Despite her intentions to stay alone, Naomi quickly makes two unexpected connections- one with a musically gifted Ultra-Orthodox young boy who lives in her building and the other with Fabrizio, a charismatic Italian monk and organist. While these relationships allow Naomi to reconnect with her love of music and sense of meaning, they also make her a target in her new community. Faced with escalating isolation and violence, Naomi must learn to use music as a bridge to overcome towering religious barriers.

BETWEEN WORLDS

Bina, a religious woman from Jerusalem, arrives panic-stricken at the hospital after being notified that her son, Oliel, was severely injured in a stabbing attack. This is the first time she sees him since he became secular and lost contact with his family. Her husband, Meir, comes later only after their daughter Ester insists he does. At the hospital, Bina meets Amal, apparently there to attend to her dying father. While Meir searches for answers to revive Oliel, the two despondent women bond with one another. However, Amal hides a secret from Bina and Meir. While awaiting Oliel’s revival, the women will learn about truth, faith, understanding, acceptance, and love that can, and maybe should, replace fear of the unknown.

A HEARTBEAT AWAY

A touching story of an Israeli pediatric cardiologist sent to Africa to perform lifesaving operations in Tanzania, where every day five children die from heart conditions. Dr. Akiva Tamir and his team examine hundreds of children, of which only a handful can receive the treatment which will save their lives. When 6 yearold Julius arrives to the clinic in critical condition, Dr. Tamir is forced to choose whether to operate on the child, who has very little chance of survival. Dr. Tamir and his team take the viewers on an emotional rollercoaster as they deal with the most serious question of whom to treat and who will be left to die. A riveting human drama that swings the pendulum between science and faith, hope and despair and life and death. At its center are the human doctors who have been thrust into the position of Gods in the midst of Africa.

OPERATION WEDDING

This documentary by filmmaker Anat Zalmanson-Kuznetsov brings to light the 1970 Leningrad hijacking that has since faded from public memory. A group of young Jewish dissidents plots to hijack an empty plane and escape the USSR. Caught by the KGB a few steps from boarding, they were sentenced to years in the gulag and two were sentenced to death, though no one ever got on that plane. Now 45 years later, Anat reveals the compelling story of her parents and the leaders of the group, and paints the picture of them being hailed as “heroes” in the West but “terrorists” in Russia, even today. This powerful and emotional film will give you a window into the lives of a group of Soviet Jews who were committed to remaining Jews, and became known as the ‘refuseniks.’

THE WOMEN’S BALCONY

A rousing and good hearted tale of women speaking truth to a patriarchal power. During a bar mitzvah celebration in an Orthodox synagogue in Jerusalem, the women’s balcony collapses, leaving the rabbi’s wife in a coma and the rabbi in shock. A gender rift in the devout community sends the congregation into crisis. Charismatic young Rabbi David appears to be a savior after the accident, but slowly starts pushing his fundamentalist ways and tries to take control. This tests the women’s friendships and creates an almost Lysistrata-type rift between the community’s women and men.

EXODUS

Ari Ben Canann, played by Paul Newman, is a young Israeli activist who fights to set up a homeland for the Jewish people. The time frame is the founding of the state of Israel, and the suspense begins on a ship filled with 600 Jewish immigrants bound for Israel who are being off-loaded on Cyprus. An intelligence officer succeeds in getting them back on board their ship only to have the harbor blocked by the British with whom they must negotiate. The second part of the film depicts the situation in Israel as independence is declared and she is attacked by most of her neighbors. The film was inspired by Leon Uris’ 1958 bestseller of the same name.
