One is the miracle that the very tiny Jewish army was able to defeat the mighty Greek empire. The second is the miracle of the oil that burned for eight days when there was only enough for one day.

MITZVA MITZVA SPOTLIGHT SPOTLIGHT

CHANUKAH

Really, the main miracle of Chanukah was that the Jewish army won the war and got rid of the Greeks. The Jews were not trained tofight and their army was a fraction of the size of the Greek army. In daavening and bentching we only mention the war and not the miracle of the oil at all! So why do we celebrate the miracle of the oil and light the Menorah for 8 days and we don’t celebrate the victory at all?!

The Greeks didn’t believe in Hashem, they only believed in what their eyes could see. They only worshiped themselves and their own power, and they forced the Jews not to keepthe Torah and Mitzvos. The Greeks didn’t want the Jews to believe in Hashem! Yochanan Kohen Gadol and his sons, the Chashmonaim, started the war against the Greeks because if they hadn’t fought and won, Torah and Mitzvos would have been forgotten. They didn’t know how they would win, but they had no choice. They fought hard and Baruch Hashem, they were able to take back the Bais Hamikdash. But they still had a long way to go to defeat the Greeks and they weren’t sure how it would happen. When they saw the miracle of the oil they recognized that Hashem was with them and that they were fighting for the right reason and would win the war.

e Every year w light the menorah to nd remind us, a , se everyone el that even though the the Greeks and s other nation try to deny Hashem, the Menorah o shines out t the whole world that al Hashem is re h and He is wit us!

S ' Y D FRED CATERING CATERING story...

FROM

From when he was

a teen in the 9th grade, Freddy was already flipping burgers, rolling sushi and grilling chicken. Whenever his friends would have a party, he was the guy that was running the grill and in charge of the food. Freddy had a natural talent for preparing food and everyone loved it. As he was getting older and it was time to find a profession, naturally he wanted to work with food. He had to now figure out how could he make money from this passion.Together with his brother Ron they came up with an idea. They would rent a warehouse in New Jersey and make it into a beautiful hall. Freddy would then cook his best dishes and make a 5-star free event. Everyone who would taste Freddy's delicious food woulD surely hire him for their next occasion. This idea seemed fool-proof. They set a grand opening date for 6 months’ time on Sunday June 6th and they started planning immediately. It took time to work out all the details. They had to re-do the warehouse, decide on the menu and cook all the dishes. He then had a marketing team create a logo for his catering business and advertise the free event. This event soon became the buzz of the town. The news was spreading and people were getting very excited.

...

a new story by: Rabbi Eli Scheller

CONT...

It was already the end of May - just one week before the big event and Freddy could not contain his excitement. He was driving down the highway, listening to his favorite song when all of a sudden; boom! A tractor trailer rammed into his car! His car flipped over and the next thing he knew, he was in a hospital bed. In the hospital the doctor explained to him what had happened. Freddy didn't remember much. He had a couple of bones that were broken but he was thankful to be alive. After several days of surgeries and treatments the head nurse said to Freddy, “Things are looking good and you will be able to leave Monday morning June 7th.” Freddy’s heart sank. “Monday morning? I have my big event on Sunday night June 6th! I’ve been preparing for this event for six months!” The nurse said, “I’m sorry, but you're not going anywhere before Monday morning.” Freddy’s hopes faded before his eyes. He immediately phoned Ron, his brother, who said, “Freddy, you have nothing to worry about. I will go to the event and represent you. I'll ask people if they have questions. When they come over to me and they ask who made all of this, I'll tell them all about you. I'll give them your business cards, don't worry about it. Freddy breathed a sigh of relief. It sounded like a good plan.

CONT...

Sunday night June 6th, the lines to the event were out the door. More people came than expected, but thankfully they had enough room and food for everyone. It was a huge success. Everyone was eating and having a great time. The only problem was that nobody was coming over to Ron. No one had any questions. No one had any compliments or seemed to wonder where all the food was coming from. Ron wasn’t sure what to do. He called Freddy with tears in his eyes and told him that the event was packed, but no one inquired about Freddy’s Catering. Freddy said to Ron, “Please go around to the tables and make conversation with everyone. Ask them how they are enjoying the food and give them my business card.” Ron went from table to table but the people were too busy eating and enjoying themselves to care about Freddy’s Catering. When he offered them the business card, they weren’t interested. He tried explaining, “Let me tell you guys all the work that Freddy put into this event…” but nobody wanted to hear it. They were getting annoyed at Ron. They just wanted to enjoy their free food. Ron began to cry. His brother Freddy put months of planning into this event and spent so much money. He simply could not let the event just go on like this. It was an embarrassment. Freddy worked so hard to promote this event so that everyone would recognize his name and nobody knew who he was. He called Freddy back and updated him. Freddy told Ron, “We have only one option left. Go to the fuse box and just turn off all the electricity.”

CONT... All the people at the party were enjoying the food and each other’s company when all of a sudden the room got dark. At first everybody thought it was a joke and they said, “Come on, turn thE lights back on”, but the room stayed dark. Some people tried the light switch but it wasn’t working. Everyone began to say, “Hey, who's in charge? Who made this event?” Immediately Ron walked in and he said, “Oh, Freddy's in charge” They said, “Give us his number.” He gave them Freddy's number and Freddy's phone started ringing.People were messaging him, “This is not right. Turn on the lights right now. You invited us to a party and then you tricked us.” Freddy ignored all the messages. Finally, he got a message that said, “Thank you for this beautiful party that you made for us!” Freddy wrote back, “You’re welcome.” Then the man wrote, ‘Can you please turn on the lights so we can continue enjoying all of the great things that you did for us?” Freddy wrote back, “Sure”, and the lights went back on. Eventually, everyone found out who Freddy was and they asked about him and many people used him at their simchos. This story should help us think more of Hashem. Hashem made a beautiful world for us. He wants us to recognize Him. He sends Rons into this world that do mitzvos and bring Hashem's holiness here so all of humanity can recognize Hashem. But that doesn't always work. When that doesn't work, Hashem turns off the lights of the world, with punishments and disasters to help us recognize where all the good is coming from. Let’s open our eyes to all the free gifts Hashem gives us every day!

Bearing this in mind. When our friends or any around us are involved in things or behaviors tat we feel is beneath us we have the obligation to ourselves to be bigger, as Rabbi Berkovits always says, and be true to what we know is right. The amazing thing is that what the Mishna is telling us is that if we act on being bigger not only won't our friends leave us out, but they will also actually look up to us and respect us for we are. Now, there are certainly situations where this will cause us to be left out of some fun. And indeed, might even result in some friends pulling away from us. But then we can be at peace knowing that the ones who don’t react in that way are the ones who love us, not only for we are but for who we want to be. Having that support and circle of friends around us will be well worth the price. However, the positive effects do not stop there.
