Sink in: Final season of ‘La Brea’ premieres BY SARAH PASSINGHAM Science fiction stories help us escape the reality in which we live to fantastical worlds that are sometimes literally turning themselves inside out. The final season of “La Brea,” the sci-fi drama that explores a world full of time-bending portals and sinkholes, premieres the first of its last six episodes on NBC Tuesday, Jan. 9. Natalie Zea (“Justified”), Eoin Macken (“I Used to Be Famous,” 2022), Zyra Gorecki (“Chicago Fire”) and Jack Martin (“All Rise”) all return as the Harris family, who have been searching for each other, along with some answers about the La Brea tar pit sinkhole that opened up and separated them, for two seasons. “La Brea” will wrap up its story this season with six action-packed episodes tying together the threads between its several timelines. It all began in present-day Los Angeles, when a massive sinkhole opened up in the middle of the city, sending everything and everyone deep into the past. Sinkhole survivors land in what they learn is the place from which they fell, but all the way back in the year 10,000 BCE. Two members of the Harris family were sent through the sinkhole time portal: mother and office manager Eve (Zea) and her teenage son, Josh (Martin). Now separated physically from

her estranged husband, former Air Force pilot Gavin (Macken), and her daughter, Izzy (Gorecki), Eve struggles to understand the new world she was dropped into and tries to find her way back to solid ground in present-day L.A. Chiké Okonkwo (“Being Mary Jane”) is Dr. Ty Coleman, a therapist who befriends Eve and Sam in 10,000 BCE. Ty is living with a terminal brain tumor when he is sent through the sinkhole, an unimaginable event that changes his perspective on life. His adventure into the past includes falling for Paara (Tonantzin Carmelo, “The English”), a Tongva woman who connects with him over complicated past relationships. Though their relationship had its struggles — they come from two completely different centuries, after all — the pair married in a rare moment of celebration among the survivors. Eve and Ty emerge as leaders among the new sinkhole society early on, joined by former Marine and surgeon Sam Velez (Jon Seda “Chicago P.D.”), who entered 10,000 BCE with his daughter, college student Riley (Veronica St. Clair, “Unbelievable”). Rohan Mirchandaney (“The Newsreader”) is Australian stoner Scott Israni, whose knowledge as an anthropology graduate student becomes a commodity after he winds up falling through the sinkhole. Scott becomes close with Josh

and Riley, but often gets himself into dangerous situations with others — like when he was almost killed by The Exiles before Gavin stepped in last season. A well-armed group of warriors who, like the “Sky People” who fell from L.A. into the distant past, The Exiles seem to have arrived from another time. Led by Taamet (Martin Sensmeier, “Alaska Daily”), who happens to be Paara ‘s ex-husband, The Exiles use steel weaponry, something that is not historically consistent with 10,000 BCE. The Exiles are foes, not friends, to anyone new they encounter, taking Eve hostage in the second season, along with Veronica (Lily Santiago, “Vineyards,” 2023), a strong-willed, religious young woman with a shocking past, and former Air Force pilot and longtime friend of the Harris family, Levi Delgado (Nicholas Gonzalez, “The Good Doctor”). As if one sinkhole and time portal wasn’t enough to try to get to the bottom of, there are multiple timelines and interconnected stories within them in “La Brea.” Seat yourself firmly in 2024 before tuning in to the final season premiere of “La Brea,” airing Tuesday, Jan. 9, on NBC.

Q: Someone told me that Julianne Moore started her career on a soap opera. Is that true? A: Yes … two of them, in fact. Her earliest professional credit is “The Edge of Night,” on which she appeared for several episodes in 1984. Soon afterward, she joined “As the World Turns,” playing the dual roles of Frannie Hughes and her look-alike relative Sabrina. She earned a Daytime Emmy Award for her work on that show, which she did continuously from 1985 to 1988; she then made a return appearance in 2010. Moore began doing primetime TV parts during her “As the World Turns” run, notably opposite Valerie Bertinelli in the 1987 miniseries “I’ll Take Manhattan,” then she was hired for TV-movies including “Money, Power, Murder” and “The Last to Go.” www.theitem.com Around the same time, she also moved into theatrical films with “Tales From the Darkside: The Movie” and “The Hand That Rocks the Cradle,” and that became her principal venue from the early 1990s forward, with her eventual win of an Academy Award for best actress for “Still Alice” (2014).

Weather makes heaters hot item

A (snow) day to play

Portable units, piping materials big sellers at hardware stores BY BRUCE MILLS bruce@theitem.com With unseasonably low temperatures at night in the tri-county region since Monday, residents have been buying up portable space heaters and pipe fittings and related parts for burst pipes, according to local hardware stores. Staff at Lowe’s, Tractor Supply and Simpson Hardware & Sports said Thursday that space heaters have been big sellers all week. Simpson was the only one that reported Thursday afternoon to still have an assortment of heaters on hand. After Wednesday’s snowstorm dropped 4 to 6 inches of snow throughout Sumter County and about 3 inches in Clarendon and Lee counties, utility providers only reported a limited number of home power outages in the tri-county region. Duke Energy spokesman Ryan Mosier said the provider only had a handful of reported outages associated with the cold and snowstorm on Wednesday night in the three counties. Black River Electric Coop. representative James Moye said the co-op had about 95 home outages in the area, but everyone had their power back on by 5 a.m. Thursday. The stretch of cold nights seem to be causing more problems than Wednesday’s snowfall. According to National Weather Service

Sumter may not have the rolling hills found in cities farther north, but one neighborhood road between Alice Drive Elementary School and Second Mill Pond was slanted enough for those barely broken-out speedsters to provide hours of entertainment the morning after a handful of inches of snow powdered, then iced, the area. The Associated Press reported the largest snowfall — 8 inches — was found in Williamsburg County near Andrews but claimed areas around Sumter picked up 7 inches. There were about 4 inches on the lawns lining the street where a group of kids were playing Thursday morning. “I think it caught us all off guard,” said Robert Jones, whose two sons, Wyatt, 8, and Jeremiah, 12, were taking turns racing on

The children playing all attend Wilson Hall, which was closed Thursday because of Winter Storm Grayson. Paige Sanders, 10, stood among the Jones brothers and their friends, laying out the rules for the race. You go there, and you go there. “Yesterday, we tried to go out here, but it was too powdery,” Sarah Smith said. Her sons, 9-yearold Banks and 7-year-old Eli, were also taking turns racing. “Now that there’s a layer of ice, it’s perfect.”

The storm may have passed by Thursday, leaving sled-friendly roads and a winter wonderland across the Midlands, but the

height of it Wednesday evening was not so fun for Smith’s husband. Sumter County Sheriff’s Office and South Carolina Department of Transportation reported traffic was backed up on U.S. 378 because of cars sliding off the road, getting stuck and being unable to make it up an icy hill. Smith said her husband was in traffic for two hours.

The picture remains most famous as one of the best examples of title star Steve McQueen’s particular brand of screen cool, as he plays a self-styled police detective who’s chosen to protect a witness for an ambitious politician. Robert Vaughn (who also shared screen credit with McQueen in “The Magnificent Seven” and “The Towering Inferno”) also is great as said politician, who’s outwardly charming but covertly cold-blooded in seeking to advance his own agenda — so he isn’t very pleased when an assassin gets to the witness before the latter can testify, leaving both him and one of Bullitt’s colleagues in very bad shape. “The Flintstones” (ABC, 196066): Fox’s “Grimsburg” joins the category when it premieres Sunday, Jan. 7, but this was the first animated series made specifically for evening television. The Hanna-Barbera classic succeeded largely because it offered something for everyone, including the appealing animation of the prehistoric characters for youngsters, and the smart parallels drawn between past and modern times for adults. “The Jetsons” (ABC, 1962-63): It only made sense, if Hanna-Barbera had success in delving into the past, for the studio to follow up by taking the concept into the future. Instead of Fred Flintstone, George Jetson was the hapless head of the household, relying on Rosie the Robot and pet dog Astro to help him through life. “The Simpsons” (Fox, 1989-present): Animation hadn’t been a part of prime time for some time when Homer, Bart and the rest of Matt Groening’s Springfield-based characters — originally seen in short subjects on “The Tracey Ullman Show” – were spun off into their own series that continues to run strong all these years later, often with big-name voice guests. “The Critic” (ABC, 1994; Fox, 1995): The world of a movie reviewer (voice by Jon Lovitz) supplied the framework for this comedy, which frequently incorporated parodies of popular or famous films into the episodes. “South Park” (Comedy Central, 1997-present): Kenny has survived countless killings to stay with one of television’s most proudly irreverent shows. “Futurama” (Fox, 1999-2003): Wanting more from “Simpsons” mentor Groening, Fox commissioned this saga of a modern man defrosted in the future, where he worked for a courier service. Two forthcoming seasons of the show have been ordered by Hulu. “Family Guy” (Fox, 19992002, 2005-present): Seth MacFarlane’s satire of domestic life had such strong performances on cable and DVD, Fox had to reconsider after canceling the show. “Drawn Together” (Comedy Central, 2004-07): Virtually every type of character was sent up hilariously, and with a decidedly adult bent, in this parody of both cartoons and reality shows. “Archer” (FX, 2009-16; FXX, 2017-23): The misadventures of a mishap-prone secret agent (voice of H. Jon Benjamin), part of a team that often didn’t agree on procedure, fueled this recently concluded comedy. “Bob’s Burgers” (Fox, 2011-present): A family-run restaurant, whose owners face constant personal and professional dilemmas, furnishes the basis for this Emmywinning sitcom.

Golden guesses: Golden Globes return, top contenders announced

Heroic moves: Marvel’s ‘Echo’ premieres deaf Indigenous superhero in style BY DANA SIMPSON In recent years, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has become a massive blockbuster sensation. Fans of the superhero genre have long been divided into camps — DC versus Marvel, for instance — but those seeking any form of visual entertainment, from art to books to film and television, would be hard-pressed to find a medium that did not cater in some way to caped crusaders or leotard-clad superhumans. That said, ever since The Walt Disney Company purchased Marvel Entertainment in 2009 (for a whopping $4 billion), the company’s streamer, Disney+, has been one of the greatest proponents of the “super” genre. Newest to join the ranks is “Echo,” the “Hawkeye” spinoff series premiering Wednesday, Jan. 10, on the platform. While hardly new to the Marvel Universe, Echo is best known to current Marvel fans in the form of budding actress Alaqua Cox, who was born and raised in the Menominee Indian Reservation in Keshena, Wisconsin, and is of the Menominee and Mohican nation. Starring alongside Jeremy Renner (“The Hurt Locker,” 2008) and Hailee Steinfeld (“Dickinson”) in the 2021 miniseries “Hawkeye,” Echo was introduced in a supporting role and garnered plenty of attention for her two-fold inclusivity and incredible fighting abilities. As is the case with nearly all superheroes and villains in the MCU, Echo’s backstory is somewhat complicated and varies significantly between sources, but at least three things remain consistent: her name, her background and her deafness. Born Maya Lopez, Echo is the highly gifted

View from the Couch

daughter of secret mob enforcer William Lopez (Zahn McClarnon, “Dark Winds”) — sometimes referred to as William Lincoln in other related source material — a proud Native American man of the Cheyenne Nation, and a Latina mother, known vaguely as “Ms. Lopez,” who abandoned the family when Maya was young. Upon his untimely death related to criminal activities, William urges hulking mobster Kingpin, a.k.a. Wilson Fisk (played in “Echo” by Vincent D’Onofrio of 1987’s “Full Metal Jacket”), to look after his young daughter at all costs. Nothing if not a man of his word, Fisk agrees — and so begins Lopez’s journey as Echo. Per the Marvel website, the Disney+ series is Echo’s origin story and “revisits Maya Lopez, whose ruthless behavior in New York City catches up with her in her hometown. She must face her past, reconnect with her Native American roots and embrace the meaning of family and community if she ever hopes to move forward.” By reconnecting with her hometown, her roots and her own morals and desires, Maya tries to let go of what no longer serves her and embrace the feelings that have been driving her down the same dangerous path as Kingpin and the father she lost during her childhood. Along the way, however, there is plenty of violence, bloodshed and “real consequences” (per Freeland) — hence the series’ TV-MA rating. Behind the scenes, Navajo filmmaker Sydney Freeland (“Reservation Dogs”) and Australian/ Gunaikurnai creative Catriona McKenzie (“Satellite Boy,” 2012) direct the series. Naturally, Freeland and McKenzie were excited to begin work on a project focused on the only deaf Indigenous superhero in entertainment media. Beyond that, the official trailer for “Echo” also prominently features the hero’s prosthetic leg, an addition to the original source material to provide added inclusivity and incorporate Alaqua’s own, real-life prosthetic into the storyline. “Representation was extremely important to myself and to everyone on the crew,” Freeland stated at an October 2023 news conference. But neither Alaqua’s amputee status nor the character’s deafness was front and center while plotting the show’s details. Sure, the creators gave thought to her disabilities and incorporated them into the storyline, but her so-called “disabilities” — as “Hawkeye” fans have clearly already noticed — are hardly disabling. Instead, creators laid much of the focus on the toll anger, resentment and physical trauma can take on a human being as they interact with the oft-cruel world around them. At the end of the day, Freeland noted, “Echo” is “an exploration of trauma — how we deal with it, how we cope with it, how it affects us, how we affect it, how it affects those around us.”

BY CAROLINE COLLACUTT Celebrating nearly a century of awards show history, the Golden Globes return, as the 81st Golden Globe Awards airs Sunday, Jan. 7, on CBS. Often referred to as Hollywood’s “party of the year,” this annual event has earned its spot as the largest awards show in the world, aimed to spotlight and celebrate talent in both film and television. According to Variety magazine, the Globes are growing larger still, as: “This year’s show also boasts two newly added awards, including Cinematic and Box Office Achievement and Best Stand-Up Comedian on Television.” Overall, each of the event’s categories will nominate six nominees (an increase from the previous five nominations), save for the fledgling Cinematic and Box Office Achievement category, which will name eight. Overflowing with contenders, this new addition — specifically created for films that have grossed at least $100 million in the U.S. — highlights an ongoing trend of film fanatics excitedly returning to movie theaters nationwide. Nominees for this new award include “Barbie” (Warner Bros. Pictures), “Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3” (Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures), “John Wick: Chapter 4” (Lionsgate), “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1” (Paramount Pictures), “Oppenheimer” (Universal Pictures), “Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse” (Sony Pictures Releasing), “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” (Universal Pictures) and “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” (Amc Theatres Distribution). On the film side, nominees for

Best Motion Picture – Drama include “Anatomy Of A Fall” (Neon), “Killers Of The Flower Moon” (Apple Original Films), “Maestro” (Netflix), “Oppenheimer,” “Past Lives” (A24) and “The Zone Of Interest” (A24). Meanwhile, Best Motion Picture – Musical Or Comedy nominees include “Air” (Amazon MGM Studios), “American Fiction” (Orion Pictures / Amazon MGM Studios), “Barbie,” “The Holdovers” (Focus Features), “May December” (Netflix), “Poor Things” (Searchlight Pictures). Over in the TV world, some of the top contenders include the Best Television Series – Drama nominees, “1923” (Paramount+), “The Crown” (Netflix), “The Diplomat” (Netflix), “The Last Of Us” (HBO/MAX), “The Morning Show” (Apple TV+) and the final season of “Succession” (HBO/MAX). Best Television Series – Musical Or Comedy nominees are “Abbott Elementary” (ABC), “Barry” (HBO/MAX), “The Bear” (FX), “Jury Duty” (Amazon Freevee), “Only Murders In The Building” (Hulu) and “Ted Lasso” (Apple TV+). Shows nominated for Best Television Limited Series, Anthology Series Or Motion Picture Made For Television are “All The Light We Cannot See” (Netflix), “Beef” (Netflix), “Daisy Jones & The Six” (Prime Video), “Fargo” (FX), “Fellow Travelers” (Showtime) and “Lessons In Chemistry” (Apple TV+). And, we would be remiss to overlook the accomplishment of eight-time Golden Globe winner Meryl Streep (“Only Murders in the Building”), who makes history this year with her record 33 Golden Globe Award nominations.
