Plaza is a Christ Centered Family We see ourselves as a people who have been bought with the blood of Christ and placed by Him in Plaza congregation. We exist as a congregation for three reasons. First, we are to reach out into our community and invite others to be in a relationship with Christ. Second, we are to worship our God who is worthy of love and commitment. In doing this we build each other (Christ’s disciples) up in the holy faith. Third, we also exist to express Christ’s benevolence toward those who have various needs. We are an undenominational fellowship with no earthly headquarters. Christ said, “He would build His church” (Mt. 16:18). He did that in the first century and we believe that same church continues to exist. In Romans 16:16 we find the phrase, “churches of Christ” and this is where we get our name.

WELCOME

Sumter Shaw Family

A

s you arrive and get settled in the community, you will soon discover the people of Suter have great patriotic pride in supporting the base mission, military personnel and their families and demonstrate an overwhelming show of support for deployed personnel and their families. Base personnel return that support to the community through their unselfish work to improve the quality of education, medical care, spiritual life and humanitarian activities. Shaw Air Force Base is located within city limits. City of Sumter government and staff works closely with Shaw on a daily basis, with a team of former and current elected officials, city staff and military retirees in support of Shaw’s airmen, soldiers and their families. Land use near military installations is always a concern. New residential and commercial development along with increasing competition for land, airspace and water access can constrain training, testing and other base activities. PRESENT FOR DUTY: A HISTORY OF SHAW AFB By Senior Airman Jacob Gutierrez

SHAW AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. – The U.S. Air Force is celebrating a milestone 75th birthday later this year. The organized force has been a continuing presence in defending the freedoms and people of the United States since Sept.18, 1947. While this commemoration is underway, another significant anniversary occurred recently. Shaw Air Force Base has been providing teams of resilient and ready forces for 80 years. That entire span of time has been possible thanks to the commitment and service of its airmen, as well as a successful partnership between Shaw and the local Sumter community. “Shaw Air Force Base has always provided ready soldiers and airmen due to hard work and continuous in38 SHAW AIR FORCE BASE

vestment with our allies, partners and communities,” said Col. Lawrence T. Sullivan, 20th Fighter Wing commander. “With the support of the American people and the Sumter community, we will continue to meet any challenge anytime, anywhere, by following the examples of those who came before us.” Before the creation of the modern Air Force, a rural

South Carolina airfield was activated by the U.S. Army Air Corps on Aug.30, 1941. Known then as Shaw Field, military personnel began executing readiness missions that would see Shaw become a major player in subsequent historical American engagements. From the very beginning, Shaw has concentrated on the

critical mission of delivering ready airmen and pilots to prepare and command lethal airframes in missions across the world. During WWII, troops were sent to the Air Corps Basic Flying School at Shaw Field where they prepared to deploy in various aircraft, including the BT-13 Valiant and the AT-10 Wichita. From Shaw, they flew out to the front lines of multiple military offensives. Near the conclusion of WWII in 1947, the 20th Fighter Wing was born, continuing Shaw’s legacy of supplying airpower, flying aircraft like the F-51 Mustang and F-84 Thunderjet. Early in the 1950s, both the Korean and Cold War called the newly formed wing overseas and tested the power and capabilities of airmen with more advanced aircraft and

evolved military strategy. These conflicts would cement the need for Shaw to continue its readiness mission stateside, accessioning the next wave of future combat airpower. During the years that followed, the base saw the arrival and departure of many wings and groups. Some of the other assigned units include the 363rd Tactical Reconnaissance Wing, which flew aircraft like the F-101 Voodoo and the F-4 Phantom II. Later, it was redesignated the 363rd Tactical Fighter Wing, which brought the F-16 Fighting Falcon, continuing the legacy of the Wild Weasel mission. The Wild Weasel mission exemplifies the innovation necessary for continuing mission success. F-16s at Shaw trained in the suppression of enemy air defenses, preparing to destroy

SHAW AIR FORCE BASE 39

surface to air missiles and led the way for the rest of the fight. Wild Weasels live by the motto, “first in, last out,” which defines the identity of the wing and is why Shaw is referred to as Weasel Nation. In the early 1990s, Shaw was actively engaged in another conflict, this time in the Middle East. Fighter squadrons assigned to the 363rd Tactical Fighter Wing were the first to deploy F-16s to Operation Desert Shield and continued to fly missions during Operation Desert Storm. This was another test of Shaw’s commitment to readiness and the beginning of an ongoing presence in this area of responsibility executing missions of national, regional and global importance. In 1994, Shaw welcomed the return of its long overseas host unit, the 20th Fighter Wing. The end of the Cold War saw the reassignment of the wing and in the following decades saw it support an extensive list of critical American military engagements including, but not limited to, Operation Freedom’s Sentinel in Afghanistan and Operation Inherent Resolve in Iraq and Syria. Today, Shaw remains engaged in every region of the world across the full spectrum of military operations. Together, U.S. Army Central, 9th Air Force (Air Forces Central), 15th Air Force, the 25th Attack Group and the 20th Fighter Wing form an unmatched ability to train, deploy and employ combat power. “We are committed to becoming more agile in our execution, more strategic with our resources and more resilient in our operations,” Sullivan said. “While the units and designations have changed, our dedication to our community and country remain steadfast.”

Fourth Fridays

Typically the second weekend in April, the event this year will be held in September. The West African Bimbe festival of harvest celebrates the spirit of sharing and features traditional soul food, music, art, dance, living history showcases and a parade in the South Sumter community Held the third weekend of May, the festival celebrates Mary McLeod Bethune, a native of Mayesville who went on to become an American icon. She was an advisor to four U.S. presidents, a champion of human and civil rights and the founder of Bethune-Cookman College in Florida. 2022 will mark the 80th rendition of the Iris Festival, held each Memorial Day weekend. It is one of the oldest continuous running festivals in the state and includes music, arts and crafts vendors, pageants, plant and flower sales, antique and classic car shows, contest, concerts, children’s activities and food. It is the only time of the year guests can ride a boat on Swan Lake. Held the first Thursday of October, attendees stroll through the historic downtown Sumter district to samples food and beverages from houses. Homeowners open their homes and share stories about them while local chefs, caterers and amateur cooks offer up snacks and goodies. Downtown Sumter turns into a block party as streets are closed and friends gather on Main Street to drink, eat, dance and socialize. Many dress in traditional Lederhosen. Bring a chair and relax as you watch the festivities or find space at outdoor restaurants on North Main Street. Held in November, this event benefits Sumter Senior Services, which provides activities to seniors and delivers hot meals to homebound residents. Explore downtown businesses while sampling snacks and drinks. Swan Lake Iris Gardens comes alive with a display of more than one million Christmas lights designed to decorate tall trees and shaped into beloved characters and scenes. It’s the largest free Christmas light display in the state, and it’s open nightly throughout December. Find a spot to sit or dance on Main Street in front of the Sumter Opera House each fourth Friday of the month, May-September. Concert attendance is free, food and drink is available for sale via vendors and downtown restaurants and cafes. Bring your chairs (no outside food or drink is permitted) and spend the evening listing to live music.

AVIS-MONTHAN AIR FORCE BASE, Ariz. - Gen. Mark Kelly, commander of Air Combat Command, certified the new F-16 Viper Demonstration Team pilot on March 5, ahead of the 2022 air show season. Capt. Aimee “Rebel” Fiedler has more than 2,000 flying hours combined in her six years of military service and prior experience as a civilian flight instructor. As the team commander, Fiedler will perform precision aerial maneuvers to demonstrate combat capabilities of one of the U.S. Air Force’s premier multi-role fighter aircraft, the F-16 Fighting Falcon, also known as the “Viper.” “When you travel to air shows, you are meeting the next generation of fighter pilots and airmen, and that inspires me to do my job better,” Fiedler said. “They are the ones that are going to be flying alongside me or trained up to take on this mission after my time is done. We get to show the people we meet that this is an attainable goal, and as long as they set themselves up for success, they can do this job.” Capt. Fiedler solidified her position as

commander following extensive training, including multiple certification flights. The Viper Demonstration Team, now led by Fiedler, consists of seven maintainers who are responsible for maintaining and readying the jets for air show performances. “These shows allow us to get out and share our story with the crowds,” said Master Sgt. Brandon Baden, F-16 Viper Demonstration Team superintendent. “They get a firsthand look at how we keep the Viper flying, while also getting a realistic picture of who we are and how we became Air Force maintainers.” Together, the team is currently scheduled to perform at 21 shows this season, giving audiences around the world a firsthand look at the F-16, while working toward their mission of inspiring the next generation of airmen. They will perform at the Shaw Air and Space Expo in Sumter on April 2-3.
