Things To Do New In 2016

Returns December 2nd-4th To Make Historic Galveston Island history at Galveston’s Victorian holiday festival, Dickens on The Strand! Held December 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, the 43rd annual festival is a holiday tradition with great family programming, including newly created events specifically for youth. This year’s festival begins Friday, December 2nd with free admission to Fezziwig’s Beer Hall from 5-9pm, and continues with ticketed admission Saturday, December 3rd from 10am-9pm, and Sunday, December 4th from 12 noon-6pm. “Each year Dickens on The Strand brings a festive spirit to the beginning of our holidays,” states GHF Executive Director, Dwayne Jones. “Now, for more than forty years, Dickens enlivens the streets and introduces thousands of visitors to the ambiance of the Victorian era. Children and adults alike can retreat back to the day of Charles Dickens and the early decades of historic Galveston. It remains one of the magical experiences in our area and in Texas.” The annual holiday street festival, based on 19th-century Victorian London, features parades, non-stop entertainment on seven stages, strolling carolers, roving musicians, bagpipers, jugglers and a host of other entertainers. Costumed vendors peddle their wares from street stalls and rolling carts laden with holiday food and drink, Victorian-inspired crafts, clothing, jewelry, holiday decorations, and gift items. Two descendants of Charles Dickens will once again grace the festival as GHF welcomes Lucinda Dickens Hawksley, great-great-greatgranddaughter of Dickens, and Jane Dickens Monk, great-great- granddaughter. Both women will be at numerous events throughout the weekend.

Elvis Christmas Memories Starring Jake Rowley Sunday, November 20th (2:30pm) Elvis

will be in the building! “Elvis Christmas Memories Starring Jake Rowley,” the highly talented 20 year old actor, singer, and musician from Texas who dazzled in the role of young Elvis Presley in the Tony award-winning Broadway play “Million Dollar Quartet,” will deliver unforgettable memories from the Elvis Christmas and Gospel catalogue, as well as some of the biggest career hits of the greatest entertainer of all time: Elvis Presley. The show also features The Payola

A Grand Strand Soiree Featuring specialty acts, award-winning performers, and a carefully curated food and drink menu, this new kickoff to the annual festival is not to be missed! Held in Hendley Green on Friday evening, December 2nd, attendees will enjoy live music by Houston’s Two Star Symphony, a special aerial acrobatic performance by Cirque La Vie, and appearances by Lucinda Dickens Hawksley, James Beard award-winning author Robb Walsh, and noted cocktail historian Elizabeth Pearce. Tickets are $75 and reservations are required. Breakfast with Dickens The great-great-granddaughter of Charles Dickens, Jane Monk, isn’t just coming to this year’s event to take in the sights and share her heritage, she’s also there to cook a traditional English breakfast! Join Jane and Chef Mary Bass, Food Network’s “Cutthroat Kitchen” runner up, at the beautiful 1859 Ashton Villa on Saturday, December 3rd or Sunday, December 4th. Tickets are $60 and reservations are required. Complimentary Book and Dickens Writing Workshop Dickens descendant Lucinda Dickens Hawksley will lead a special writing workshop, “What It Was Like to be a Child in Dickens’ Time,” each day of the festival for youth ages 8 and up. Also, through a special grant by the Alice Taylor Gray Foundation, the first 3,000 youth that enter the festival grounds will receive a special print edition of Charles Dickens’ 1838 “Oliver Twist.” Dickens Costume Contest What fun is a Dickens festival if you don’t have the characters? This new addition to the wildly popular costume contests puts the focus squarely on the beloved characters from Dickens’ literary works. Held on Sunday, December 4th at 3pm, registrations will be open for individual and family costumes. Registration is $10 for individuals and $15 for families and interested competitors can sign up at the costume contest booth. Exclusive Book Releases Both visiting Dickens descendants, Lucinda Dickens Hawksley and Jane Dickens Monk, will be arriving with the premier of their new books. Special book signings will be held both days of the festival. “Charles Dickens and his Circle,” written by Historian and writer Lucinda Hawksley, explores the life of her great great great grandfather, Charles Dickens – one of the first people to whom the term ‘celebrity’ in its modern sense was applied, and whose extensive circle of friends and associates embraced many of the most eminent and influential figures of the Victorian age. “My Life: Cedric Charles Dickens,” is written by Dickens’ great great granddaughter, Jane

Kings, a high energy authentic vintage band and The Moonrays, a phenomenal vocal quartet reminiscent of Elvis’ own legendary Jordanaires as well as members of the Galveston Symphony. “This is the most authentic musical tribute to Elvis on tour today. The entire family will enjoy this wonderful concert packed with memories of Elvis.” The evening is being presented by Penland Foundation Productions, LLC, a Texas foundation dedicated to support the fight against cancer and to educate youth through scholarships. Their goal is to donate a portion of the net profits of their family-friendly productions to various charities that support children fighting cancer, disease, and abuse. This will be presented at The Grand 1894 Opera House, a premier entertainment showplace for acclaimed international stars, iconic American artists, and celebrated regional performers located at 2020 Postoffice St., downtown Galveston. Tickets are available by contacting The Grand’s box office at (409)765-1894, (800)821-1894, or go to thegrand.com.

It’sThere’ a Winter Wonder Island s a reason people like to call Galveston

the “Winter Wonder Island” of Texas. It offers more than 50 days of magical activities from November through January. Don’t believe us? Here are the top ten reasons to make a Christmas pilgrimage to the Island: Schlitterbahn’s fun doesn’t end with the summer. The heated indoor waterpark celebrates the season with Holiday Splash, offering themed rides like the Snow Globe Float, an indoor light show, an ornament factory, kids’ reindeer games and even the opportunity to go surfing with Santa. All aboard to the North Pole! Each year, Santa gives the reindeer a break and rides into the Galveston Railroad Museum on the Santa Train. After disembarking from the decked-out Harborside Express, he spends the day in the depot with his elves. The Galveston Holiday Lighting Celebration at Hotel Galvez & Spa features the arrival of Santa Claus via horse-drawn carriage, special holiday performances and, of course, the lighting of the hotel’s 35-foot Christmas tree. Whether you’re looking for a jewel for a special someone or a zany trinket for a friend, the shops

along the Historic Downtown Strand offer a trove of treasures—everything from antiques and other vintage finds to books, jewelry, culinary treats, home furnishings, and clothing— that make holiday shopping a cinch. Not every Santa has a belly that ‘shakes like a bowl full of jelly’ when he laughs. The fittest St. Nicks come out every year for Santa Hustle, a 5K and half marathon featuring red-suited runners plus cookies, candy, holiday music, and Christmas decor all along the route, making it a fun, festive experience for participants and observers alike. The famous pyramid at Moody Gardens looks even cooler when it’s decked out for Festival of Lights, one of the largest holiday celebrations in the country, featuring more than a million twinklers and 100 animated light and sound displays, plus live entertainment and the area’s only outdoor ice-skating rink. It takes 2 million pounds of ice and 30 internationally acclaimed carvers from Harbin, China, to create Ice Land, the colorful frozen world that features holiday scenes all sculpted out of, you guessed it, ice. It’s a favorite every year, drawing families to Moody Gardens from November to January. Celebrate the holidays with Grand entertainment – Loretta Lynn: the Queen of Country Music, ELF the Musical, Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol,” “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer the Musical,” “The Nutcracker,” and The Priests – presented in Galveston’s magnificent performing arts theatre, The Grand. There’s no place for holiday spirit like Christmas on The Strand, the shop that has kept

Victorian Christmas Holiday Homes Tour Friday-Saturday, December 2nd-3rd at 5:30pm, you can tour the beautiful Holiday decorated

homes of the East End Historical District in Galveston. The elegant historic homes of the East End Historical District are the architectural products of skilled European immigrants during a time when Galveston was the wealthiest city in Texas. Many of the East End homes that are around today rose out of the ashes of the Great Fire of 1885 that burned more than 40 city blocks, including a swath of the East End. Many of the homes built after the fire were designed and constructed for wealthy merchants and entrepreneurs wanting to display their wealth and impress their neighbors. East End neighbors have generously volunteered to open their homes, which will be festively decorating for the holiday season. You can see who is participating at eastendhistoricaldistrict.org. You must check in at 1501 Postoffice St. for wristbands, maps, or tickets. Tickets are $17 and are available at The Grand 1894 Opera House, located at 2020 Postoffice St., or go online to thegrand.com. For more info go to eastendhistoricaldistrict.org. The proceeds from this event help the East End Historical District Association (EEHDA) maintain the East End Cottage, Darragh Park, and Alderdice Park, all of which are open to the community for use. Guests may start the tour at any of the homes or at the EEHDA Cottage, located at 1501 Postoffice St., where light refreshments and a restroom will be available.

It’s Back, Bigger and Better than Ever:

The “Passport to Postoffice District” Weekend By George Douglas Lee

With Christmas shopping season just a month away, “Passport to Postoffice District” is back, bigger and better than ever! Join the fun 11am-6pm Saturday, November 12th; and 12 noon-5pm Sunday, November 13th in Galveston’s historic downtown Postoffice Arts and Culture District. After the first-ever “Passport to Postoffice” event in July, Postoffice Street District merchants believe customers will enjoy another one, just in time for the holidays. Grab a bite to eat, shop, and stroll to find unique gifts that you won’t find on the internet. You can also earn a chance to win the grand prize: a Cruise for two with an overnight stay at The Bungalow at Modern Vintage, downtown Galveston. “Several of the businesses will offer activities or incentives for participants. For example, during the last event, customers had a great time picking out their favorite artist at Affaire d’Art. The artist was awarded a prize. The store plans to offer more events like this in the future. ‘Passport to Postoffice District’ is a great opportunity to come together, have fun, and get to know each other,” says Nikki Thompson, co-owner of Affaire d’Art. The first event was only a few months ago. Business owners in the Postoffice Street District created this event to let people know what a fantastic shopping experience awaits them on historic downtown Postoffice Street. “Passport to Postoffice” was so successful, businesses have brought it back. Postoffice Street has been part of downtown Galveston since the area was built in the mid1800’s. It was once known as the infamous “redlight district,” although that designation more accurately describes portions of Postoffice and Market streets on the west side of 25th. The colorful designation remains to this day, although Galvestonians now refer to Postoffice Street as “restaurant and gallery row.” Today the district boasts more than 50 businesses. There are art galleries featuring local, regional, and national artists, jewelers, and jewelry from inexpensive and fun to exquisite and – yes - expensive. There are also men and women’s clothing stores featuring athletic wear, running shoes, beach wear, every day, and evening wear. There are even tuxedo rentals for weddings and formal occasions, coffee shops, coffee roasters, kitchen supplies, and even a locally made ice creamery. Antiques and collectibles, unique gifts, writing instruments, model shop, toys, and books for adults and kids can be found in this district as well. All that shopping and strolling will make you hungry, and Postoffice District restaurant owners are able to tap into Galveston’s super locally-sourced seafood to help with that. Postoffice District restaurants also reflect American’s appetites for every possible ethnic combination: everything from an old-fashioned soda fountain, to Italian, Mexican, South and Central American, and Indian. Architects across the United States are trying to create “outdoor lifestyle centers,” where restaurants and stores line narrow pedestrianfriendly streets. These upscale outdoor shopping areas are designed to look like city streets. Galveston is so lucky to already have one – without the added construction expense – in the Postoffice Street District. Retailers were pleasantly surprised with the last “Passport to Postoffice District” event. “We were surprised to meet so many people who’d never been to Postoffice Street before, or hadn’t even heard of it. Some customers asked how long the street had been here,” said Brenda Lee, co-owner of G. Lee Gallery. “From the retailer’s perspective, this was the best advertising dollars we’ve ever spent.”

Pick up a passport at any one of these three locations during the event: Affaire d’Art Gallery, The Old Galveston Trading Company, or St. John Antiques. Once in hand, visit the participating Postoffice District businesses listed on your passport. Don’t leave without having your passport stamped at each and every business listed on the passport. When you’ve got them all stamped, turn in the completed passport to be entered into the drawing for fabulous Postoffice District merchant prizes and the Grand Prize. “Passport to Postoffice District” began with the vision of building relationships between the district’s unique, one-of-a-kind local shops and the community. Participating businesses want to reward shoppers for taking the time to shop local and show their appreciation for your support. This event is sponsored by: Galveston Restaurant Group, Tom Schwenk of The House Company, and The Bungalow at Modern Vintage. For more info go to facebook.com/ passporttopostoffice.

Books

Just in Time for Fall Reading By Gini Rainey

“The Ladies’ Room” by Carolyn Brown Here’s a shout out to an author who has written a book that affirms the recovering ability of a woman who discovers that her husband has been cheating on her their entire married life. Instead of sitting around and having one giant pity party, which she richly deserved, Trudy took her life by the horns and turned it around. A bit of gossip shared between her cousins and overheard in the ladies’ room during a funeral sparked Trudy into leaving her cheating husband. After twenty years of spoiling and pampering her husband and daughter, Trudy finally starts to think about herself for a change. As she spreads her wings and begins to fly, she finds treasures in the house full of “junk” her great aunt left her and in the man next door. Brown did an amazing job of character development that makes the reader feel as though they are right there while Trudy takes that house, and with the help of Billy Lee, turned it into a home and her falling down life into one full of hope and promise. With just the right touch of humor, this book had me hooked from the moment Trudy tried to pull her torn panty hose back up over her slightly overweight body so she could gracefully exit the stall and walk, with some amount of dignity, past her snarky cousins. Trudy’s straight-forward way of dealing with all of the strikes against her should be an example to all of us who constantly tippy toe around the people in our lives so as to not hurt their feelings while forgetting that we have feelings too. This is not a heavy weight book by any means, but rather it is a light and satisfying read that will remind anyone who has lived in a small town where everyone’s business becomes everyone else’s business, right or wrong. It is a positive affirmation of one woman’s inner soul and also one heck of a good read. Rating: 5 of 5, Copyright 2012, Montlake Romance “The Good Wife: The Shocking Betrayal and Brutal Murder of a Godly Woman in Texas” by Clint Richmond If you like true crime stories, here’s one for you, and it takes place right in our own back yard – down Austin-way. Written about a couple who were leaders in their church, this book tells the story of the brutal murder of Penny Scaggs and the trial of her husband, Roger. I remembered reading about this murder when it occurred, and when this book popped up on my suggested reads, I had to know more. Living in an exclusive neighborhood in the

hills outside of Austin, one would have thought the Scaggs had it made and could have wished for nothing more. Penny had earned a name for herself in the Christian community as being a highly respected teacher of young marrieds on how to create and maintain a happy home, while Roger successfully rose up the corporate ladder, took a lover, and purchased expensive boats and planes. But none of that mattered when someone (presumably Richards) took Peggy’s life through a brutal and violent act of passion, not just beating her with a lead pipe, but also stabbing her multiple times. With close attention to details, Clint Richmond followed the story of the murder, discoveries by the police, and Roger’s trial, painting a picture of a senseless crime that no author of fiction could possibly top. With incredible organization, he doesn’t judge or draw his own conclusions about the guilt or innocence of Roger Scaggs. Rather, he lets the reader form his own opinions based on the overwhelming evidence presented. “The Good Wife” is definitely a good read for those of us who like to see the inner workings of an excellent investigative police force and a thorough legal system. Rating: 4 of 5, Copyright 2007, Market Paperback “The Myth of Santa’s Beard” by Sharon Thayer It’s not too soon to start thinking about gifts for Christmas, and here is a book that will fit the bill for the little ones on your list. This book was the winner of the Bronze Moonbeam Children’s Book Award and EVVY Award from Colorado Independent Publishers’ Association and is the first in a series of holiday books planned by Ms. Thayer. The book has a backstory that explains how Ms. Thayer became the bearer of the Myth, while the meat of the book is geared towards young readers and read-to’s. Although this book sounds like it would be perfect for the holiday season, it has a message that makes it worthy of being read all year long. It encourages children to be good and kind and considerate, and when they are, Santa’s beard grows longer and longer until it gets in the way

of everything the dear man does. Without giving away the surprise ending, the elves and Mrs. Claus figure out the best way ever to handle this problem. While geared toward children, this book will help children of all ages re-discover the magic of the season, and while the story is delightful, the illustrations by Marci Chambers and Frank Pryor that fill the pages are absolutely lovely and magical. a remarkable journey caring for an infant from the Shriners Hospital for Children in Galveston. Cynthia Bowen was done raising children. She and her husband Lawrence were emptynesters living a quiet life in suburbia after putting their three children through college. But one afternoon, a phone call from their youngest daughter Kanika changed everything. She was in the midst of her residency at a burn hospital for children when a baby with life-threatening burns, abandoned by his family, arrives. Social Services could not find anyone who could take the infant, designated Baby B, because of his traumatic injuries. Distraught, Kanika pleads with her mother, “Can you please come to Galveston and take care of him until a placement can be found?” As Cynthia moves in with her daughter to care for the child, the approach of Hurricane Rita has placed Galveston in the middle of the largest evacuation in U.S. history. Cynthia Bowen’s memoir covers the turbulent events she faced in her efforts to care for the child as an uncaring medical system, a corrupt CPS worker, and an disruptive evacuation all came to bear on their lives.

Mom & Pop’s Serve Up Homemade Cuisines

Everyone always asks, “Where do the locals go to eat?” Well, locals choose the locally-owned small spots that are a little off the beaten path and loaded with charm and yummy food. Momand-pop-style restaurants are a staple in Galveston. Here are a few of them. You’re sure to enjoy the home cooking and sampling of the local flavors.

Mel’s Blueplate Diner

Ready for the ultimate in comfort food? Mel’s Blueplate Diner serves up some of the very best, featuring favorites like burgers, chicken fried steak, chicken fried chicken, fresh veggies, daily lunch specials, and much more. Mel’s is the family-friendly spot you’ve been looking for. Fork-tender chicken fried steak, real mashed potatoes, good old fashioned, un-trendy green peas and onions, homemade cornbread muffins, red velvet cupcakes with real cream cheese frosting, and a retro orange soda: that’s dining! But if you like their lunch, you should try their breakfasts. The biscuits and gravy are all handmade as well as the turnovers (pastries filled with either apple, cherry, cream cheese, or pecan). The “Eye Opener” is two open-faced biscuits topped with two eggs, cooked any way you like, then covered in rich creamy sausage gravy. This is a hangover cure! The Chicken & Waffles are delicious, and Mel’s omelets are freshly made and served fluffy and stuffed to the gill. Mel’s is located on 38th Street, one block north of Broadway, kind of tucked behind a building in a converted house. Be forwarned: the word is out, and they literally run out of their favorites (especially the daily specials) some days. Mel’s Blueplate Diner is located at 910 38th St., Galveston. They are open 10am-3pm Monday-Friday, 8am-3pm on Saturday, closed Sunday. For more info call (409)789-6355 or go to galveston.com/mels or facebook.com/ melsblueplate.

BBQ Barn & Burgers

BBQ Barn & Burgers is a great locally-run restaurant serving up authentic Texas barbecue. Newly remodeled to capture the essence of southern cuisine, they offer a selection of smoked meats including brisket, turkey, ribs, and sausage as well as classic American dishes. Ms. Mona serves up tender brisket, boudin balls, and juicy burgers. This small restaurant offers huge servings inside and outside on the patio. The smoked pulled pork sandwiches are some of the best around. The fried chicken wing basket is heavenly as well as the fried okra! The Tremont Gallery & The Strand Gallery By Terry Card

GIVING is the foundation of two very popular Galveston art galleries. The people and city of Galveston, are the beneficiaries of the giving of one man, a BOI. He is a career officer with the Galveston Police Department, having won many awards, is a police hostage negotiator, and gives freely of the knowledge he has accumulated through instructing fellow officers. In his role as a police officer, he gives the city safety and most importantly, integrity. He started the Tremont Gallery in July 2013 to give Galvestonians and visitors beautiful art in its many forms and give children the gift of learning art. He is well-known for coordinating Blue Santa, giving a Christmas to children of the poor that they would not otherwise have. He gives his time volunteering for many other charities as well, including Lighthouse. One of his favorite charities is Alley Cat, a program to save feral cats in the community and make the general public aware of their plight. He raises money to have the cats fixed and then placed in loving homes. Along the way he has accumulated a substantial and coveted collection of alley cat pictures and film. He is Joey Quiroga - a man who learned about giving from his family and has taken it to the next level. The Tremont Gallery: After renting space to exhibit his photography for several years, he decided that there had to be a better way. He found that he had to sell from twenty to thirty pieces just to meet the cost of renting. He thought, “there are so many other gifted artists out there who can’t afford to show their work given their situation.” In his mind he envisioned a way of being able to give these struggling but highly talented artists an opportunity, but it cost money he did not have. There is an old saying, “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade,” and that is just what Joey did. At a very difficult time in his life when he was going through a traumatic divorce, leaving him with nothing except his job with Galveston PD, he spotted a for rent sign at the Tremont and Postoffice Street building the Tremont Gallery now occupies. He thought he would never be able to afford it, but he contacted the owner anyway. Fortunately, the owner worked with him, helping him attain his dream of giving other artists a chance to display their art, which would not only benefit them, but even more, the people of Galveston who would not have had an opportunity otherwise to enjoy the work of a diverse number of unknown artists. Joey worked out a rental agreement with about twenty other artists, which took care of the rent. The rent he charges them is cheaper than any other place on the island. He now has thirty-six artists, including a mid-seventy year old, first time artist. He has a wide variety of local talent producing a variety of art including books, photography, oils, and watercolors. Based on his travels and seeing the quality of art at places like the Louvre, he wanted to recreate Galveston into a Soho-like art center. The Strand Gallery: Joey opened The Strand Gallery with his partner Marilyn Harris four months ago in June. He found that the Tremont Gallery had a great deal of his photo art mixed in with the thirty-six other artists in the gallery. He felt that he needed separation. When the bus terminal was completed on Strand St. and had space available for rent, in his view the location was outstanding with people continuously going through the bus terminal and coming in from cruise ships. By opening this gallery he could now solely display his art with a focus on monthly shows featuring a guest artist. His hope always has been, and is, 18 • GalvestonIslandGuide.com

to bring quality art to the general public at reasonable prices. The clientele for both galleries is an even mix of locals and tourists. He has sold pieces to art lovers in far ranging locales like London, England, and Colorado, which ties into his future plans to someday open galleries in other parts of the U.S. – perhaps Jackson Hole, Wyoming, or the Hawaiian island of Lanai. In the meantime he is content to display the art from the galleries in the bus and cruise terminals. And having a variety of artists pays off with some of the art having gone viral, creating a kind of traveling art show. Joey was born in Galveston. His father worked as a longshoreman, and his mother looked after the house. Depending on the work available at the shipyards, the family occupied dwellings in both good and not so great areas of town. However, it was different in those days; the poor looked after each other. Even when they had little money, his family gave to others worse off than them. His father worked very hard to support the family, and his mother taught Joey to be polite, respectful, kind, hardworking, and God-fearing. During his high school days at Ball High, he was a star baseball player with hopes of a big league career. That came to a sudden end when he was almost killed by a drunk driver. It was that, some negative encounters with police stopping him for no reason other than he lived in the poor part of town, and the kindness shown by others far less fortunate than him that led him to police work. After some college, he then graduated from the Police Academy in 1990. His interest in photography was fueled at age eleven or twelve by his Uncle George, a Vietnam veteran. Uncle George, who was his father’s brother, had his own light room and worked mostly in black and white. It was this interest in black and white photography that led Joey to read books on photography. His inspiration was Ansel Adams, who wrote several books that explained photography in detail for the novice. He was world-famous for his black and white pictures. The lesson Joey got from his reading was to know how to shoot your lines. Blue Santa Comes to Town Again Joey has been involved in the Blue Santa program since 1990 and took over the program in 2008. When he first started, the program had about 40 families in it. Today it provides Christmas gifts to more than 3,000 children from not just Galveston, but other locales on the mainland like La Marque. He works with veterans, raising money to help them on their way, Lighthouse, which provides food at charity functions, and has his Alley Cat program. As he says, “Friendship and giving is more important than monetary success.” In this, he feels he always has something to offer the community. In addition to his love of art, a new love has come into Joey’s life. He and Melinda, whom he has known for 23 years, just recently announced their engagement. Couldn’t happen to a better person! The Strand Gallery is located at 2418 Strand, Ste. D, (409)220-1777, and the Tremont Gallery is located at 511 23rd St., (409)5395667, both in downtown Galveston.

The show will be on exhibit through January 8th, 2017 in the upstairs Pop-Up Gallery. Galveston Art League (2117 Postoffice St., (409)621-1008, galvestonartleague. com) - Fontaine Jacobs, an award-winning artist, is on exhibit this month at the gallery. She started drawing at a young age. She has worked in watercolor, pencil, pastel, acrylic, and oil. Although her mother persuaded her to become a teacher, she never lost her love of art. Calling her style somewhere in the middle of realism and impressionism, she likes the happy accidents that happen with watercolor,

the speed of acrylic, and the forgiving nature of oil. Her favorite subjects are people. Her most poignant piece is a nude she painted two weeks before she was diagnosed with breast cancer. After a double mastectomy, she is cancer free, but she will never sell that painting. As a breast cancer survivor, Fontaine donates a portion of her proceeds to Breast Cancer Research each year. Galveston Artist Residency (2521 Ships Mechanic Row, (409)974-4446, galvestonartistresidency.org) - “True Artist Tales By Scott Gilbert” will be on view through February 4th, 2017. There will be an opening reception at the GAR Gallery on Saturday, November 26th from 6-9pm. Scott Gilbert’s art is known for its strong chiaroscuro effects and visual influences ranging from Alex Toth to Jaime Hernandez to Chester Brown. “True Artist Tales” was unusually philosophical for a comic strip, and his comics feature such legendary Houston settings as the Axiom, Commerce Street Artist Warehouse, Pik-N-Pak, etc., as well as strips from the road set in Fort Davis, Port Aransas, and Balmorhea. The retrospective includes 133 pieces of Gilbert’s original comic art. Music Mambo Jazz Kings: Have Soul-Will Travel

Recently, we went to see the band, the Mambo Jazz Kings and had the opportunity to interview Art Lopez with this dynamic band. Island Guide: Is there a story behind the name of your band? It is rather unique. Art: No story, I just wanted to choose a name that no one would forget. ‘Mambo Jazz Kings’ sounded cool. Island Guide: Who is in the band and what do they play or do? How many members are there total? Art: We have a big band! Band members are vocalist: Ray Cole Brown, Frankie Edwards, and Donny Buggs. Our horn section is Fred Linton (Tenor Saxophone), Brad Nieme (Trumpet/Flugel Horn), Craig Zlatnik (Trombone), and Tony Richardson (Alto Saxophone). The Rhythm section is myself, Art Lopez (Rhythm Guitar), Albert Moguel (Lead Guitar), Luis Marian (Drums), and Lloyd Wade (Latin Percussion). Then there’s Andy Estrada (Bass Guitar) and Ron Davis (Keyboards). We also have Sound Technicians Steve Williams, DJ Services, and Pam Cortez; Road Manager John Thompson; and Stage Technician Jason Gorham. Island Guide: Wow, that is a lot! No wonder your sound is so great and unique. Describe your style of music, your sound, for someone who has never heard you. From their bio: Mambo Jazz Kings (MJK) are a high-energy dance band that can lay down every funky beat from Earth Wind and Fire to Beyoncé’. The band’s resume of music also includes the big band sounds of Frank Sinatra, Bobby Darin, and Glen Miller. The Mambo Jazz Kings have been entertaining audiences both young and old from stages of concerts, festivals, and nightclubs. Twelve (12) fantastic guys and one exciting lady take the stage every night. The band has an outstanding rhythm section, a powerful horn ensemble, and three vocalists that will keep you moving until the very end! Island Guide: What was your inspiration(s) for your unique sound? Art: I’d say our main inspirations are Tower of Power, Earth Wind and Fire, Aretha Franklin, and the Temptations. We love the sound and overall feel of that music. Island Guide: Describe a live show for someone who hasn’t had the honor of seeing you guys. From their bio: The name, Mambo Jazz Kings, makes you wonder what to expect, but the performance leaves no doubt! ‘Have Soul Will Travel’ is our motto. The founder and leader of this entertainment package is Art Lopez. He has put together a great group of musicians, each having their own style and

appeal. When these individuals take the stage together, though, the chemistry is magic, and you can be assured it will be hard to keep your seat. Island Guide: Where is everyone from? Art: Galveston/ Houston and the surrounding areas. We are locals to this area. It has had our hearts for a long time. Island Guide: How did you guys all meet? There are a lot of members so there must be several cool connections. Art: We met throughout the music circuit. Many musicians often provide me their resumes as we meet at various performances. That is how we met and formed our current line up. Island Guide: How long have you been together as a band? Art: Wow, this dates me! We’ve been together for 31 years. The original band formed in 1985. Island Guide: How did everyone get started in music? And who were your influences, when, where, ages, etc… Art: All of our musicians and singers are educated musicians. They started in school and continued learning music even though most were different styles and genres of music. We all stem from various types of Jazz, R&B, Soul/ Funk, and the Big Band Era. We like to joke that it is in our blood. Island Guide: Do you play originals and/or cover tunes? Both? Art: No, we only play cover tunes. This band entertains as a hobby. We have promotional CD’s that we give away as samples of the cover music that we play. Island Guide: How long have you been playing in Galveston? Art: Since the beginning: 1985. The Mambo Jazz Kings are Galveston home-grown and well respected. Island Guide: What do Galveston and your Galveston fans mean to you? Art: Our fans on the Island are the love of our life. We always have a energetic and loyal crowd. We cherish our Galveston fans. Island Guide: Where else do you play? Areas, tour any? Festivals? Art: We play mostly in Galveston and Harris County at club performances, festivals, and concerts, plus, we play several Mardi Gras Festival concerts in La Porte and Port Arthur, which are always fun. Island Guide: Is there anywhere that you simply love to perform or that stand out that you have played? Art: The Annual Galveston Mardi Gras concert is always our favorite. The crowd is amazing, and they really love our sound. Island Guide: Was there a point in your life

Let’s Dance with Mickey Hobbs

On any given day there’s so much going on in Galveston that it’s hard to decide what to do, where to go, and who to see. One thing that you can count on, however, is the thriving music scene that is taking the island by storm. There is always great live music to be found all over the island. The Historic Downtown/Strand District is a thrilling area because you can literally walk or dance your way from one venue to the next and get your fill of great music! Just follow the beat, and you’ll likely find what you’re looking for. One must-see area is Pier 21 off Harborside Drive. It’s like an amusement park of excitement and entertainment where one can enjoy world-class seafood, Italian food, and Greek food within steps of each other, while enjoying the view of the active Port of 20 • GalvestonIslandGuide.com

where you decided that playing music was going to be your career? Tell me the story of how that decision came about. Art: Growing up in the 60’s in my Galveston neighborhood, (Stephen F. Austin School District), this was a time of neighborhood musicians. All the kids played music, and our elders guided us and coached us to continue our musical venture. It was in 1967 while attending Stephen F. Austin Jr. High School that I started my first band, MG & the Soul Seven. After that, I never looked back, and I have been playing music ever since. Island Guide: What has been the biggest challenge as a band to overcome? Art: Personnel turnover is always a challenge. People come and go. Island Guide: What advice would you offer people who are just starting out, either individually or as a band? Art: Take the right approach; learn all you can in school (proper music instruction) and take piano lessons. This is the root of all music. Island Guide: If you could pick one band to see live, living or dead, who would it be? Art: Tower of Power! Island Guide: What was the first album you remember purchasing? Art: (laughs) “Meet the Beatles,” (1965) and “Bump City” by Tower of Power (1969). Island Guide: What is the ultimate direction for the band for the future? Art: That’s simple, to keep entertaining at our live performances, locally, nationally and if possible, internationally. Island Guide: Anything else you would like people to know about your band? Art: Just remember our slogan, “Have SoulWill Travel.” Island Guide: Any big announcements for the fall and 2017 - like tours, new music, etc? Art: We are going on a cruise! Monday-Saturday, November 13th-18th, 2017, on Carnival Cruise Lines Liberty, we will be playing for the “Tejano, Brown-Eyed Soul Musical Cruise.” The cruise leaves Galveston to Cozumel, Progresso, and the Mexican Riviera. Now this will be fun! Island Guide: Anyone you want to thank or acknowledge? Art: We’d like to thank Mike Mejia of the “Outcast,” Danny Smith of “The Evertones,”

Galveston. You are certain to see dolphins frolicking in the ship channel and playing in the wake of cruise ships as they leave port. If you are lucky enough to find yourself at Pier 21 on Wednesdays, be sure to join the locals as they fill the bar for happy hour at Nonno Tony’s Seafood Kitchen for the amazing sounds of Mickey Hobbs. A local Houstonian, Mickey has been entertaining folks in the greater Houston area with his unique style for more than twenty years and has a huge Galveston following. With his diverse style, Mickey is able to sing all genres of music from blues and country to R&B and soul. Mickey covers music from the 40’s to present day, and with a library of more than one thousand songs, you can bet he has your favorite and will gladly sing it for you. When crooning Frank Sinatra songs, Mickey takes you back in time to the days of the glamorous dinner clubs in Las Vegas and Galveston’s historical Balinese Room, where Frank himself performed. Mickey then brings you back and has you on your feet dancing to old favorites from the Beatles, Fleetwood Mac, Doobie Brothers, and the Eagles. You’ll sway to the soulful sounds of Luther Vandross, Marvin Gaye, Al Green, and Prince. Then just as suddenly find yourself doing the twist to Chubby Checker. One minute “you be jammin” to Bob Marley and the next trying to keep step line-dancing. The emotions and memories that he evokes will flow through you as he sings one after another of the great classics that you grew up with. He’ll take you back to your high school prom

Emilio Castillo of “Tower of Power,” all of my family, and of course, my wife Monica, who has been so supportive in my music endeavor since we met. Island Guide: How can people access your calendar and music? Art: You can find us, Mambo Jazz Kings, at mambojazzkingslive.com; and on Facebook at facebook.com/mjkings. Island Guide: Any last words? Art: I just want to thank all of our family, friends, and fans for so much ‘LUV’ since 1985. Even though we are now a little older, with a little less on top, and a little more around the middle, we can still get down and jam with the best. I can’t wait to see you all at our shows! and then center stage at your wedding. It’s a rare quality indeed to find a performer who so effortlessly flows from one era to another, while at the same time keeping the energy upbeat and moving. Another island hot spot that Mickey can be found singing in is the Hilton Hotel on the Galveston Seawall. The hotel has a gorgeous view of the Gulf and with a much larger dance floor, you can shake your booty all night long and get a great workout at the same time. Mickey also plays a few weekends a month at the Galveston Country Club. It’s not only his soothing voice, unique talent, and style that keep him busy and in demand, but also the fact that Mickey is a genuinely kind and nice guy. He remembers his fans and always makes sure to sing their favorite songs when they come in. In his free time, he’s a professional lineman for the United States Tennis Association and referees high school basketball. Mickey says he prefers smaller venues like restaurants and private parties because of the intimacy he can share with the guests, and he feels his quality of singing is best when he’s able to relax and let the music flow. He also has a group of talented musicians that he can pull together for duo and trio performances, as well as a full band for weddings, corporate events, and Gala Fundraisers. Mickey is managed by Brinkley Entertainment. To follow Mickey’s performance schedule visit his website at mickeyhobbsmusic.com. There, you can also peruse his song list and have your favorites ready to request the next time you see him.
