With so many humans, and so many hidden talents, I see everything as a creative outlet. I am proud to say that the people surrounding us within this world, are the people who contribute to COLLECTIVE. For artists of all kinds, all with forms of their own creation, COLLECTIVE, is inspiration from the inspired. __ Editor Izze Rumpp

nce upon a time I found myself living barefoot outside on a magical island. A place of rainbow trees, giant mangos and ukuleles. The water looked like KoolAid and the jungles smelled of ramen noodles. I met an old man on acid that climbed trees and sang while nudists danced with fire. This place was Maui, Hawaii and it was the beginning of my adventures.

T

he stars were my roof I slept on the beach, in a field by the post office in Paia, on the porch of an abandoned mansion on Baldwin Beach, by a Buddhist statue in Lahaina. We were the lost boys of Neverland, and we were free. We lived without money, we used food stamps and when those ran out we were eating mangoes and climbing trees for coconuts. We bathed in waterfalls and washed our clothes in beach showers then hung them to dry on fences. We slept in the dirt with the bugs, and I even learned to sleep in the rain. We were a tribe in a way all with different skills to contribute. Each of us doing our part to help and share whatever we had with one another, if one of us had food we’d share it with everyone. We slept wherever our heads fell at night and we all fell together. It was very natural and very old feeling.

“Creation, design, and extension of ideas could be what it is called but most people say just artist. My head is a mash of imagery and sound. What comes out? You will see.

T

he Warm Days series consists of five oil paintings that were produced in a single session mentality. Where as a typical way of painting is repetitions of coming back, adding, and changing the piece over a longer period of time letting the brain rest regroup and reinspire. Here I tried to focus on the complexities of the feelings, emotions, and themes of the idea in cloud form from inside my mind for about 7-8+ uninterrupted hours. This method is more of a mediation along the lines that musicians will use to practice long sessions of improvisation. (See Frusciante and his floating ball mediation)

I

am an East coaster that decided to take a bicycle tour to explore the people and places of the country. I set out looking to answer the question of where I wanted to live and what I wanted to do. Even though I didn’t feel pressured about finding a career path, I was curious. 4,500 miles, 15 states, 18 months, and 3 bikes later, I landed in Seattle. I hope to start a bicycle tour company that will inspire, motivate, and educate you to take bike adventures of your own. I want to guide as well as teach all of those who have ever said ‘I wish I could do something like that.’

suppose if I had to give myself a job title, I’d go for explorer. By no means am I the most traveled or most explored or most experienced of the lot, but I feel I shine the most when I put myself in unfamiliar places. Its when I feel most myself. As a bicycle tourer, I get to travel the country at the most perfect pace. Fast enough to cover some ground and slow enough to take it all in and be apart of my surroundings. The almost effortless rhythm of cycling lets me fall into a balance of work and relaxation. Once you get some momentum going, the bike starts to work on its own and you have the time to just think about whatever you want. A mind can run pretty wild when you’re cycling for 7 hours a day. Even though I wouldn’t if I had the chance, the interstates are blocked off to bike and foot travelers. The back roads are still the arteries of the country. The little towns are the heart. The town squares. The fair grounds. The one cafe. The United States is an amazingly beautiful and diverse place. I think most are too quick to go overseas to feel like they’re actually traveling. I wanted to see what my own country was all about. Scenically and culturally. But again, I have found that making visits to NYC or Austin or San Francisco does not show you what this country is all about. Visit the Floyd, Virginias and Livingston, Tennessees and the Benkelman, Nebraskas of the country and I think you’ll feel the real charm of the US. My bike trip across the country has been the most amazing time of my life. I have learned and seen so much. My goal now is to help as many others as I can to go on adventures of their own. Whether its a 2 day car trip to a beach they’ve never heard of or a 9 week bike trip across the country. The generosity of strangers has been the highlight of my travels, and its what I want others to experience the most with going on an adventure. These people are in every town in every state. Sometimes we are taught by family and friends and teachers and authorities to be weary of strangers and to ‘look out for all those crazies out there’. When in reality, those crazies are the aces and the skeptics are the ones to look out for. This world is full of compassionate souls that want and will help you any way they can.

It’s a documentation of an intensified connection to an elusive moment. Hands engulfed in paint, in motion. Vibrations translated into poetry, into color, into a physical form.
