Researchers at the University TIP OF THE WEEK of Houston have concluded that buzzwords on food packaging create a “false sense of health.” For example, when Cherry 7up was labeled with the word “antioxidant” (as it is in supermarkets for just a trace amount of antioxidant), participants in the study chose it over the non-labeled version. Temple Northup, who headed up the study for UH, advises consumers to verify the claims first. “If you think about it deep down,” says Northup, “you’re being fooled by words.” (University of Houston)
